Self-contained text covering practical image processing methods and theory for image texture analysis.
Techniques for the analysis of texture in digital images are essential to a range of applications in areas as diverse as robotics, defence, medicine and the geo-sciences. In biological vision, texture is an important cue allowing humans to discriminate objects. This is because the brain is able to decipher important variations in data at scales smaller than those of the viewed objects. In order to deal with texture in digital data, many techniques have been developed by image processing researchers.
With a wholly practical approach and many worked examples, Image Processing: Dealing with Texture is a comprehensive guide to these techniques, including chapters on mathematical morphology, fractals, Markov random fields, Gabor functions and wavelets. Structured around a series of questions and answers, enabling readers to easily locate information on specific problems, this book also:
* provides detailed descriptions of methods used to analyse binary as well as grey texture images
* presents information on two levels: an easy-to-follow narrative explaining the basics, and an advanced, in-depth study of mathematical theorems and concepts
* looks at 'good' and 'bad' image processing practice, with wrongly designed algorithms illustrating 'what not to do'
* includes an accompanying website, setting out all algorithms discussed within the text.

This book provides the reader with an understanding of the hazards involved in using electrical equipment in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres. It is based on the newly adopted international IEC79 Series of Standards that are now harmonizing and replacing older national Standards. Explosion-proof installations can be expensive to design, install and operate. The strategies and techniques described in this book can significantly reduce costs whilst maintaining plant safety. The book explains the associated terminology and its correct use - from Area Classification through to the selection of explosion-protected electrical apparatus, describing how protection is achieved and maintained in line with these international requirements. The IEC standards require that engineering staff and their management are trained effectively and safely in Hazardous Areas, and this book is designed to help fulfill that need. A basic understanding of instrumentation and electrical theory would be of benefit to the reader, but no previous knowledge of hazardous area installation is required.
* An engineer's guide to the hazards and best practice for using electrical equipment in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres.
* Fully in line with the newly adopted international standards, the IEC79 series.
* Clear explanations of terminology and background information make this the most accessible book on this subject. Read more...

This book is intended for anyone trying to learn the fundamentals of computer programming. The chapters lead the reader through the various steps required for writing a program, introducing the MATLABr? constructs in the process. MATLABr? is used to teach programming because it has a simple programming environment. It has a low initial overhead which allows the novice programmer to begin programming immediately and allows the users to easily debug their programs. This is especially useful for people who have a "mental block" about computers. Although MATLABr? is a high-level language and interactive environment that enables the user to perform computationally intensive tasks faster than with traditional programming languages such as C, C++, and Fortran, the author shows that it can also be used as a programming learning tool for novices. There are a number of exercises at the end of each chapter which should help users become comfortable with the language.

Most data compression methods that are based on variable-length codes employ the Huffman or Golomb codes. However, there are a large number of less-known codes that have useful properties - such as those containing certain bit patterns, or those that are robust - and these can be useful. This book brings this large set of codes to the attention of workers in the field and to students of computer science.
David Salomons clear style of writing and presentation, which has been familiar to readers for many years now, allows easy access to this topic. This comprehensive text offers readers a detailed, reader-friendly description of the variable length codes used in the field of data compression. Readers are only required to have a general familiarity with computer methods and essentially an understanding of the representation of data in bits and files.
Topics and Features:
Discusses codes in-depth, not the compression algorithms, which are readily available in many books
Includes detailed illustrations, providing readers with a deeper and broader understanding of the topic
Provides a supplementary author-maintained website, with errata and auxiliary material www.davidsalomon.name/VLCadvertis/VLC.html
Easily understood and used by computer science majors requiring only a minimum of mathematics
Can easily be used as a main or auxiliary textbook for courses on algebraic codes or data compression and protection

After writing 12 books detailing adventures set around various European campaigns over the course of 12 years, further stories covered Sharpe's earlier years as a young soldier in India. Most of the Napoleonic era books were filmed for a television series starring Sean Bean as Sharpe. Cornwell was at first dubious and subsequently delighted with the casting of Sean Bean and dedicated a subsequent Sharpe novel to him. Further books written subsequently have been slotted into different parts of Sharpe's timeframe. Read more...

An ideal companion volume to David Salomons fourth Read more...

Robustness is often of crucial importance in control system design. Real engineering systems are vulnerable to external disturbance and measurement noise and there are always discrepancies between mathematical models used for design and the actual system in practice.
Robust Control Design with MATLAB helps you learn how to use well-developed advanced robust control design methods in practical cases. To this end, several realistic control design examples ranging from teaching-laboratory experiments, such as a massdamperspring assembly, to complex systems like a flexible link manipulator are given detailed presentation. All the design exercises are conducted using MATLAB Robust Control Toolbox, Control System Toolbox and Simulink.
By sharing their experiences in industrial cases with minimum recourse to complicated theories and formulae, the authors convey essential ideas and useful insights into robust industrial control systems design using major H-infinity optimization and related methods allowing you quickly to move on with your own challenges.
Features:
* Hands-on, tutorial presentation giving you the opportunity to repeat the designs presented and easily to modify them for your own programs.
