Advanced Linux 3D Graphics Programming builds upon the foundation set in Norman Lin's Linux 3D Graphics Programming. This second volume provides programmers who are experienced in both Linux and fundamental 3D graphics concepts with a well-rounded perspective on 3D theory and practice within the context of programming larger interactive 3D applications.
Lin's primary goal is to provide a solid understanding of the concepts involved in interactive 3D graphics programming in order to enable the reader to write 3D programs, libraries, and games, and to analyze and understand others' 3D code. By focusing on more than just hard-core 3D algorithms, and by providing detailed information on equally important issues such as 3D modeling, world editing, digital sound, and collision detection, Lin gives the reader sufficient information to program and populate complete 3D worlds under Linux.
Lin's careful balance between theory and practice provides both working code examples and a firm theoretical foundation, thereby empowering the reader to become a member of the professional 3D programming community.
About the Author
Norman Lin is a professional software consultant with more than 15 years of international software development experience and a master's degree in computer science. He has worked on such diverse projects as parallel supercomputing, real-time analysis of atmospheric data, and 3D game development. Lin is also the author of Linux 3D Graphics Programming. There are currently no directly competitive titles on the market that provide the serious Linux programmer and developer with an overview of how to use 3-D graphics with this rapidly growing operating system.
Norman Lin focuses on using C++ code relative to the 3-D graphics programming under Linux. The author focuses on providing illustrations of each graphics concept with self-contained code examples and then provides the programmer with the integration of each concept into a larger 3D engine framework. The programmer then is able to use this framework and create a real-time, portal-based engine.
The title includes a very distinctive CD which contains a series of animated 3-D videos illustrating key 3-D graphics concepts such as the transformation from world space into camera space. The recent development of Blender 3-D is also included in the book which is a professional quality 3-D modeler available free to programmers and developers.

Overview
Hacking is the art of creative problem solving, whether that means finding an unconventional solution to a difficult problem or exploiting holes in sloppy programming. Many people call themselves hackers, but few have the strong technical foundation needed to really push the envelope.
Rather than merely showing how to run existing exploits, author Jon Erickson explains how arcane hacking techniques actually work. To share the art and science of hacking in a way that is accessible to everyone, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition introduces the fundamentals of C programming from a hacker's perspective.
The included LiveCD provides a complete Linux programming and debugging environment-all without modifying your current operating system. Use it to follow along with the book's examples as you fill gaps in your knowledge and explore hacking techniques on your own. Get your hands dirty debugging code, overflowing buffers, hijacking network communications, bypassing protections, exploiting cryptographic weaknesses, and perhaps even inventing new exploits. This book will teach you how to:
* Program computers using C, assembly language, and shell scripts
* Corrupt system memory to run arbitrary code using buffer overflows and format strings
* Inspect processor registers and system memory with a debugger to gain a real understanding of what is happening
* Outsmart common security measures like nonexecutable stacks and intr Read more...

Rapidly evolving computer and communications technologies have achieved data transmission rates and data storage capacities high enough for digital video. But video involves much more than just pushing bits! Achieving the best possible image quality, accurate color, and smooth motion requires understanding many aspects of image acquisition, coding, processing, and display that are outside the usual realm of computer graphics. At the same time, video system designers are facing new demands to interface with film and computer system that require techniques outside conventional video engineering.
Charles Poynton's 1996 book A Technical Introduction to Digital Video became an industry favorite for its succinct, accurate, and accessible treatment of standard definition television (SDTV). In Digital Video and HDTV, Poynton augments that book with coverage of high definition television (HDTV) and compression systems.

In this, one of the first books to appear in English on the theory of numbers, the eminent mathematician Hermann Weyl explores fundamental concepts in arithmetic. The book begins with the definitions and properties of algebraic fields, which are relied upon throughout. The theory of divisibility is then discussed, from an axiomatic viewpoint, rather than by the use of ideals. There follows an introduction to ^Ip^N-adic numbers and their uses, which are so important in modern number theory, and the book culminates with an extensive examination of algebraic number fields. Weyl's own modest hope, that the work "will be of some use," has more than been fulfilled, for the book's clarity, succinctness, and importance rank it as a masterpiece of mathematical exposition.
About the Author
Hermann Weyl held the chair of mathematics at Zyrich Technische Hochschule from 1913 to 1930; from 1930 to 1933 he held the chair of mathematics at the University of Gottingen; and from 1933 until he retired in 1952 he was a Permanent Member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Proportionalintegralderivative (PID) controllers are the most adopted controllers in industrial settings because of the advantageous cost/benefit ratio they are able to provide. Despite their long history and the know-how gained from years of experience, the availability of microprocessors and software tools and the increasing demand for higher product quality at reduced cost have stimulated researchers to devise new methodologies to improve their performance and make them easier to use.
Practical PID Control covers important issues that arise when a PID controller is to be applied in practical cases. Its focus is on those functionalities that can provide significant improvements in performance in combination with a sound tuning of parameters. In particular, the choice of filter to make the controller proper, the use of a feedforward action and the selection of an anti-windup strategy are addressed. Further, the choice of the identification algorithm and of the model reduction technique are analysed in the context of model-based PID control. Widely adopted PID-based control architectures (ratio and cascade control) and performance assessment are also covered. For these topics, recent contributions are explained and compared with more standard approaches. A large number of simulation and experimental results are provided in order better to illustrate the different methodologies and to discuss their pros and cons. Practical PID Control is a helpful and instructive reference Read more...

This book shows you how to implement an effective disaster recovery strategy for SQL Server 2005 databases. With the arrival of SQL Server 2005, you have access to enhanced existing features and powerful new tools, like database snapshots and mirroring, for data backup and disaster recovery. The book also covers fundamental changes to disaster recovery capabilities, and common issues to expect when using new features.
The book examines the technical details of disaster recovery features, and then applies that information to practical scenarios. As businesses become increasingly reliant on the information they store in their various databases, effective data protection becomes ever more critical. Potential disasters can arise from natural causes, user errors, and media or hardware failure. This book will help you ensure that day-to-day activities can continue, regardless of the problem.

In order to equip hopeful graduate students with the knowledge necessary to pass the qualifying examination, the authors have assembled and solved standard and original problems from major American universities Boston University, University of Chicago, University of Colorado at Boulder, Columbia, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, MIT, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Stony Brook, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. A wide range of material is covered and comparisons are made between similar problems of different schools to provide the student with enough information to feel comfortable and confident at the exam. Guide to Physics Problems is published in two volumes: this book, Part 2, covers Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics; Part 1, covers Mechanics, Relativity and Electrodynamics.
Praise for A Guide to Physics Problems: Part 2: Thermodynamics, Statistical Physics, and Quantum Mechanics:
" A Guide to Physics Problems, Part 2 not only serves an important function, but is a pleasure to read. By selecting problems from different universities and even different scientific cultures, the authors have effectively avoided a one-sided approach to physics. All the problems are good, some are very interesting, some positively intriguing, a few are crazy; but all of them stimulate the reader to think about physics, not mer Read more...
