written for us by Jane Fenoulhet, who has considerable
experience in teaching her subjea from university level
downwards. The book is designed for students learning at

the language in a shon time. The grammar is presented
concisely and clearly, and the student is given plenty of
opportunity to praaise what has been learnt. In order to
gain the most from Hugo Dutch in Three Months, you should
spend about eight hours a week studying. Every three
weeks in the course there is time allowed for revision as
well as revision exerdses.
Start with sections 1-3 on pronundation. It is extremely
imponant that you master the sounds of Dutch before
moving on to the grammar. Each sound is described in
enough detail for you to work our its pronundation, but if
possible this should be done in conjunction with the CD
recordings that we offer as optional extras to the book.
The best way to master the sounds. stress and intonation
of a foreign language is by imitating a native speaker.
Failing this, you might be able to listen to Dutch on the
radio or via the internet; it wil1 at lea st give you some idea
of the sounds and rhythm of spoken Dutch. You should
move on to the following sessions only when you are able
to recognize readily which letters spell which sounds. The
exercises and drills will Read more...

As a textbook suitable for the classroom or self-study, Michael Scott's Programming Language Pragmatics provides a worthy tour of the theory and practice of how programming languages are run on today's computers. Clearly organized and filled with a wide-ranging perspective on over 40 different languages, this book will be appreciated for its depth and breadth of coverage on an essential topic in computer science.
With references to dozens of programming languages, from Ada to Turing and everything in between (including C, C++, Java, and Perl), this book is a truly in-depth guide to how code is compiled (or interpreted) and executed on computer hardware. Early chapters tend to be slightly more theoretical (with coverage of regular expressions and context-free grammars) and will be most valuable to the computer science student, but much of this book is accessible to anyone seeking to widen their knowledge (especially since recent standards surrounding XML make use of some of the same vocabulary presented here).
The book has a comprehensive discussion of compilation and linking, as well as how data types are implemented in memory. Sections on functional and logical programming (illustrated with Scheme and Prolog, which are often used in AI research) can expand your understanding of how programming languages work. Final sections on the advantages--and complexities--of concurrent processing, plus a nice treatment of code optimization techniques, round out the te Read more...

Most readers will have at least dim memories from geometry class of the irrational number pi. Theoretical astrophysicist Livio gives pi's overlooked cousin phi its due with this lively account, the first on the subject written for the layperson. Phi is the golden ratio of antiquity (1.6180339887), a never-ending number so lauded for its harmonious qualities that in the 16th century it was dubbed the divine proportion. It is related to phenomena as diverse as the petal arrangements of roses, the breeding patterns of rabbits and the shape of our galaxy. Phi is also claimed to have been crucial in the design of the Great Pyramids, the composition of the Mona Lisa and the construction of Stradivarius violins. Livio (The Accelerating Universe) carefully investigates these and other claims and does not hesitate to debunk myths perpetuated by overzealous enthusiasts he calls "Golden Numberists." This is an engaging history of mathematics as well, addressing such perennial questions as the geometric basis of aesthetic pleasure and the nature of mathematical objects. Useful diagrams and handsome illustrations of works under discussion are amply provided. Livio is gifted with an accessible, entertaining style: one typical chapter bounds within five pages from an extended discourse on prime numbers to a clever Oscar Wilde quote about beauty to an amusing anecdote about Samuel Beckett and finally to an eminently clear explanation of G"del's incompleteness theorem Read more...

The idea of symmetry has been heavily deployed in recent science popularizations to introduce advanced subjects in math and physics. This approach usually backfires—mathematical symmetry is much too difficult for most laypeople to understand. But this engaging treatise soft-pedals it in a crowd-pleasing way. The title's formula is the "quintic" equation (involving x raised to the fifth power), the analysis of which gave rise to "group theory," the mathematical apparatus scientists use to explore symmetry. Inevitably, the author's attempts to explain group theory and its applications in particle physics and string theory to a general audience fall sadly short, so readers will just have to take his word for the Mozartean beauty of it all. Fortunately, astrophysicist Livio (The Golden Ratio) keeps the hard stuff to a minimum, concentrating instead on interesting digressions into human interest (e.g., the founder of group theory, Evariste Galois, was a revolutionary firebrand who died in 1832 at age 20 in a duel over "an infamous coquette"), pop psychology (women have more orgasms when their partners have symmetrical faces), strategies for finding a soul mate and some easy math puzzles readers might actually solve. The result is a somewhat shapeless but intriguing excursion. Photos.

Since the publication of TOTAL ORGASM in 1973 I have been very pleased
with the response that readers have given me by mail and directly in my workshops.
Many of the letters commented that the exercises and concepts outlined here were
useful: to some they were earth-shattering.
The greatest enthusiasm has come from therapists and counselors in the
sexual field, who see this book as a reference or a guide to their work. This
acceptance is most gratifying and rewarding to me. Thank you.
My thanks also to Brev Sinclair who devised the chart of exercises found on
page 214 in this edition. It should greatly simplify remembering the sequence of
exercises and therefore make their practice easier.

With the dramatic increases in on-chip packing densities, routing congestion has become a major problem in chip design. The problem is especially acute as interconnects are also the performance bottleneck in integrated circuits. The solution lies in judicious resource management. This involves intelligent allocation of the available interconnect resources, up-front planning of the wire routes for even wire distributions, and transformations that make the physical synthesis flow congestion-aware.
Routing Congestion in VLSI Circuits: Estimation and Optimization provides the reader with a complete understanding of the root causes of routing congestion in present-day and future VLSI circuits, available techniques for estimating and optimizing this congestion, and a critical analysis of the accuracy and effectiveness of these techniques, so that the reader may prudently choose an approach that is appropriate to their design goals. The scope of the work includes metrics and optimization techniques for routing congestion at various stages of the VLSI design flow, including the architectural level, the logic synthesis/technology mapping level, the placement phase, and the routing step. A particular focus of this work is on the congestion issues that deal primarily with standard cell based design.
Routing Congestion in VLSI Circuits: Estimation and Optimization is a valuable reference for CAD developers and researchers, design methodology engineers, VLSI Read more...

Product Description
Traditional analysis of dynamical systems has restricted its attention to smooth problems, but it has become increasingly clear that there are distinctive phenomena unique to discontinuous systems that can be analyzed mathematically but which fall outside the usual methodology for smooth dynamical systems.
The primary purpose of this book is to present a coherent framework for understanding the dynamics of piecewise-smooth and hybrid systems. An informal introduction asserts the ubiquity of such models with examples drawn from mechanics, electronics, control theory and physiology. The main thrust is to classify complex behavior via bifurcation theory in a systematic yet applicable way. The key concept is that of a discontinuity-induced bifurcation, which generalizes diverse phenomena such as grazing, border-collision, sliding, chattering and the period-adding route to chaos. The results are presented in an informal style and illustrated with copious examples, both theoretical and experimental.
Aimed at a wide audience of applied mathematicians, engineers and scientists at the early postgraduate level, the book assumes only the standard background of basic calculus and linear algebra for most of the presentation and will be an indispensable resource for students and researchers. The inclusion of a comprehensive bibliography and many open questions will also serve as a stimulus for future research.

The updated new edition of the classic Introduction to Algorithms is intended primarily for use in undergraduate or graduate courses in algorithms or data structures. Like the first edition, this text can also be used for self-study by technical professionals since it discusses engineering issues in algorithm design as well as the mathematical aspects.
In its new edition, Introduction to Algorithms continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to the modern study of algorithms. The revision has been updated to reflect changes in the years since the book's original publication. New chapters on the role of algorithms in computing and on probabilistic analysis and randomized algorithms have been included. Sections throughout the book have been rewritten for increased clarity, and material has been added wherever a fuller explanation has seemed useful or new information warrants expanded coverage.
As in the classic first edition, this new edition of Introduction to Algorithms presents a rich variety of algorithms and covers them in considerable depth while making their design and analysis accessible to all levels of readers. Further, the algorithms are presented in pseudocode to make the book easily accessible to students from all programming language backgrounds.
Each chapter presents an algorithm, a design technique, an application area, or a related topic. The chapters are not dependent on one another, so the instructor can organize his or her use of the book i Read more...

Product Description:
Since it was first published in 1995, Photonic Crystals has remained the definitive text for both undergraduates and researchers on photonic band-gap materials and their use in controlling the propagation of light. This newly expanded and revised edition covers the latest developments in the field, providing the most up-to-date, concise, and comprehensive book available on these novel materials and their applications.
Starting from Maxwell's equations and Fourier analysis, the authors develop the theoretical tools of photonics using principles of linear algebra and symmetry, emphasizing analogies with traditional solid-state physics and quantum theory. They then investigate the unique phenomena that take place within photonic crystals at defect sites and surfaces, from one to three dimensions. This new edition includes entirely new chapters describing important hybrid structures that use band gaps or periodicity only in some directions: periodic waveguides, photonic-crystal slabs, and photonic-crystal fibers. The authors demonstrate how the capabilities of photonic crystals to localize light can be put to work in devices such as filters and splitters. A new appendix provides an overview of computational methods for electromagnetism. Existing chapters have been considerably updated and expanded to include many new three-dimensional photonic crystals, an extensive tutorial on device design using temporal coupled-mode theory, discussions of diffra Read more...

Keith Devlin is trying to be the Carl Sagan of mathematics, and he is succeeding. He writes: "Though the structures and patterns of mathematics reflect the structure of, and resonate in, the human mind every bit as much as do the structures and patterns of music, human beings have developed no mathematical equivalent of a pair of ears. Mathematics can be seen only with the eyes of the mind." All of his books are attempts to get around this problem, to "try to communicate to others some sense of what it is we experience--some sense of the simplicity, the precision, the purity, and the elegance that give the patterns of mathematics their aesthetic value."
Life by the Numbers, Devlin's companion book to the PBS series of the same name, is heavily illustrated and soothingly low on equations. But as he says, wanting mathematics without abstract notation "is rather like saying that Shakespeare would be much easier to understand if it were written in simpler language."
The Language of Mathematics is Devlin's second iteration of the approach he used in Mathematics: The Science of Patterns. It covers all the same ground (and uses many of the same words) as the latter, but with fewer glossy pictures, sidebars, and references. Devlin has also added chapters on statistics and on mathematical patterns in nature. --Mary Ellen Curtin --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

THIS book is concerned with the oscillations of electrical
and mechanical systems. Only systems with one degree of
freedom are discussed; other books in the series deal with
the problems arising when a system has more than one
degree of freedom or is continuous. Mechanical systems are
considered first since this is the common practice in most
courses. After a discussion of equilibrium positions of
systems without friction there is an account of their oscillations
near equilibrium. Next, the effects of friction of the
viscous type are examined.
A separate chapter is devoted to electrical circuits so that
those who wish to divorce them from mechanical systems
may do so. However, the detailed mathematical analysis of
earlier chapters has not been repeated; instead the results
have been quoted. The ideas of complex and operational
impedances which are more appropriate to electrical circuits
than mechanical systems are also introduced in this
chapter. Those who wish to develop the electrical theory at
the same time as the mechanical will find some suitable
examples at the end of Chapter Four.
The last chapter analyses oscillations which are not
necessarily small in amplitude. The non-linearities of the
system must then be taken into account. A strict mathematical
approach to this subject is beyond the scope of this
book but it is hoped that the plausible approach adopted will
enable the student to grasp the essentials of the phenomena
without becoming los Read more...
