Control Systems for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning, Sixth Edition contains a comprehensive treatment of heating and air conditioning system controls. This book was originally written to provide fundamentals of HVAC control to practitioners who were designing new control systems or maintaining existing control systems. Emphasis on fundamental control system principles along with the psychrometrics of air conditioning processes has remained a focus of the new edition. While control system technology has changed drastically over the years, the fundamentals of controlling heating and air conditioning systems have changed only modestly.
Readers will find that fundamentals of existing control systems remain in this book so that those who need to maintain or troubleshoot systems that are twenty or thirty years old will be able to see what practitioners did during that time frame. In addition the ubiquitous application of digital control technology in very recent times is also described. Note that the fundamental control principles once implemented pneumatically are now being implemented in modern digital computers - software now replaces hardware. Another change since the last addition is a new emphasis on controlling minimum fresh air for validation purposes. New techniques for doing this have been developed in response to ASHRAE Standard 62, "Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality," and these methods are included.

Applied Technology and Instrumentation for Process Control presents the complex technologies of different manufacturing processes and the control instrumentation used. The large variety of processes prohibits covering more than a few. Carefully selected and diverse, but representative, examples show how fundamentally basic simpler elements or techniques can be coordinated and expanded into more
control systems. This book is suitable for all levels of practitioners and engineers in related industries or applications.
Review
Each chapter concludes with an excellent summary...This book could be very useful for process control and other engineers who have little background in the design or operation of the processes discussed...Highly recommended.

The combination of Kevin Mitnick and Johnny Long is a one-two punch!
Product Description
As the cliche reminds us, information is power. In this age of computer systems and technology, an increasing majority of the world's information is stored electronically. It makes sense then that as an industry we rely on high-tech electronic protection systems to guard that information. As a professional hacker, I get paid to uncover weaknesses in those systems and exploit them. Whether breaking into buildings or slipping past industrial-grade firewalls, my goal has always been the same: extract the informational secrets using any means necessary. After hundreds of jobs, I discovered the secret to bypassing every conceivable high-tech security system. This book reveals those secrets, and as the title suggests, it has nothing to do with high technology. As it turns out, the secret isn't much of a secret at all. Hackers have known about these techniques for years. Presented in a light, accessible style, you'll get to ride shotgun with the authors on successful real-world break-ins as they share photos, videos and stories that prove how vulnerable the high-tech world is to no-tech attacks.
As you browse this book, you'll hear old familiar terms like "dumpster diving", "social engineering", and "shoulder surfing". Some of these terms have drifted into obscurity to the point of becoming industry folklore; the tactics of the pre-dawn information age. But make no mistak Read more...

From Publishers Weekly
The antireligion wars started by Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris will heat up even more with this salvo from celebrated Oxford biologist Dawkins. For a scientist who criticizes religion for its intolerance, Dawkins has written a surprisingly intolerant book, full of scorn for religion and those who believe. But Dawkins, who gave us the selfish gene, anticipates this criticism. He says it's the scientist and humanist in him that makes him hostile to religions—fundamentalist Christianity and Islam come in for the most opprobrium—that close people's minds to scientific truth, oppress women and abuse children psychologically with the notion of eternal damnation. While Dawkins can be witty, even confirmed atheists who agree with his advocacy of science and vigorous rationalism may have trouble stomaching some of the rhetoric: the biblical Yahweh is "psychotic," Aquinas's proofs of God's existence are "fatuous" and religion generally is "nonsense." The most effective chapters are those in which Dawkins calms down, for instance, drawing on evolution to disprove the ideas behind intelligent design. In other chapters, he attempts to construct a scientific scaffolding for atheism, such as using evolution again to rebut the notion that without God there can be no morality. He insists that religion is a divisive and oppressive force, but he is less convincing in arguing that the world would be better and more peaceful without it. (Oct. 18)

Chaotic behavior arises in a variety of control settings. In some cases, it is beneficial to remove this behavior; in others, introducing or taking advantage of the existing chaotic components can be useful for example in cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control surveys the latest methods for inserting, taking advantage of, or removing chaos in a variety of applications. This book supplies the theoretical and pedagogical basis of chaos in control systems along with new concepts and recent developments in the field. Presented in three parts, the book examines open-loop analysis, closed-loop control, and applications of chaos in control systems. The first section builds a background in the mathematics of ordinary differential and difference equations on which the remainder of the book is based. It includes an introductory chapter by Christian Mira, a pioneer in chaos research. The next section explores solutions to problems arising in observation and control of closed-loop chaotic control systems. These include model-independent control methods, strategies such as H-infinity and sliding modes, polytopic observers, normal forms using homogeneous transformations, and observability normal forms. The final section explores applications in wireless transmission, optics, power electronics, and cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control distills the latest thinking in chaos while relating it to the most recent developments and applications in control. It serves as a platform for develop Read more...

Updated to include all the recent developments to the PC and complete with a CD-ROM, the third edition of How Computers Work is like a cool science museum in a book. But make no mistake--this is not a book for children. How Computers Work aims to teach readers about all the intricacies held within the machine, and it's a daunting task. The author, Ron White, doesn't dumb down his material; instead he provides thorough and substantive definitions. The pages of fun and colorful graphics ease the tension, though, and bring the abstract concepts--the difference between RAM and ROM, for example--into real life.
The book has incredible depth, explaining everything you could want to know about your computer, with each piece of hardware being given full treatment over two to five pages. (Macintosh and UNIX users should be aware, though, that the book's model is the "Wintel," a Windows PC with an Intel microprocessor.) The book is well-structured and can easily be used as a reference resource beyond the first reading. --Jennifer Buckendorff --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Filling a hole in reference collections on the history of science, this tome brings together a great collection of articles on the progress of scientific discovery in the 16th and 17th centuries. The text, which considers the social and philosophical climate of the period as well as the science itself, is equally good at covering the concrete (such as institutions, people, and instrumentation) and the abstract (such as theories, schools of thought, and controversies). The 437 entries vary in length from just half a page to five pages, and each has a short bibliography directing the reader to recent articles and monographs as well as primary sources. Access to the entries is aided by a 60-page index, a detailed chronology, a topical/taxonomic outline of entries, and cross references. Just under 40 percent of the articles cite a work by the contributor, demonstrating that Applebaum (emeritus, history of science, Illinois Univ. of Technology) was skilled at selecting accomplished scholars from around the globe (though primarily from Europe and North America). Written at a level accessible to the educated lay reader, this work will find a welcome home in academic libraries and public libraries with larger science collections.DWade M. Software tools are a great aid to process engineers, but too much dependence on such tools can often lead to inappropriate and suboptimal designs. Reliance on software is also a hindrance without a firm understanding of the principles underlying its operation, since users are still responsible for devising the design. In Process Engineering and Design Using Visual Basic, Arun K. Datta provides a unique and versatile suite of programs along with simultaneous development of the underlying concepts, principles, and mathematics. Each chapter details the theory and techniques that provide the basis for design and engineering software and then showcases the development and utility of programs developed using the material outlined in the chapter. This all-inclusive guide works systematically from basic mathematics to fluid mechanics, separators, overpressure protection, and glycol dehydration, providing basic design guidelines based on international codes. Worked examples demonstrate the utility of each program, while the author also explains problems and limitations associated with the simulations. After reading this book you will be able to immediately put these programs into action and have total confidence in the result, regardless of your level of experience. All nine programs are available on the companion CD-ROM, including a useful unit conversion tool.

Fuzzy control methods are critical for meeting the demands of complex nonlinear systems. They bestow robust, adaptive, and self-correcting character to complex systems that demand high stability and functionality beyond the capabilities of traditional methods. A thorough treatise on the theory of fuzzy logic control is out of place on the design bench. That is why Fuzzy Controller Design: Theory and Applications offers laboratory- and industry-tested algorithms, techniques, and formulations of real-world problems for immediate implementation. With surgical precision, the authors carefully select the fundamental elements of fuzzy logic control theory necessary to formulate effective and efficient designs. The book supplies a springboard of knowledge, punctuated with examples worked out in MATLABR/SIMULINKR, from which newcomers to the field can dive directly into applications. It systematically covers the design of hybrid, adaptive, and self-learning fuzzy control structures along with strategies for fuzzy controller design suitable for on-line and off-line operation. Examples occupy an entire chapter, with a section devoted to the simulation of an electro-hydraulic servo system. The final chapter explores industrial applications with emphasis on techniques for fuzzy controller implementation and different implementation platforms for various applications. With proven methods based on more than a decade of experience, Fuzzy Controller Design: Theory and Applications is a conci Read more...

From Library Journal
