Review "A graduate-level text considering both the basic theorectical physics and practical uses of semiconductors" Materials World Product Description This textbook combines a thorough theoretical treatment of the basic physics of semiconductors with applications to practical devices by putting special emphasis on the physical principles upon which these devices operate. Topics treated are the detailed band structure of semiconductors, the effect of impurities on electronic states, and semiconductor statistics. Also discussed are lattice dynamical, transport, and surface properties as well as optical, magneto-optical, and electro-optical properties. The applied part of the book treats p-n junctions, bipolar junction transistors, semiconductor lasers and photodevices, after which the subject of heterostructures and superlattices is taken up with coverage of electronic, lattice dynamical, optical, and transport properties. The book concludes with treatments of metal-semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs and devices based on heterostructures. Graduate students and lecturers in semiconductor physics, condensed matter physics, electromagnetic theory, and quantum mechanics will find this a useful textbook and reference work. Product Description It is said that astronomy is one of the few remaining fields in which amateurs can make a real contribution to science, and nowhere is this more true than in the field of meteors and meteorites. Although meteors are isolated and unpredictable, it is possible to predict when meteor showers - usually associated with old comets - are due; they last a couple of days, during which many meteors can be observed in a single night. Equipment for watching, counting and even measuring meteors can range from the simplest (a chair) to sophisticated all-sky cameras. What is unique about meteors in astronomical observation is that many survive entry into the Earth's atmosphere and impact the ground - the only easily-analysed extraterrestrial material available to science. What is unique about Richard Norton's book is that it is both a field guide to observing meteors, and also a field guide to locating, preparing and analysing meteorites. In addition to giving the reader information about observing techniques for meteors, this book also provides a fully detailed account of the types of meteorites, how and where to find them, how to prepare and analyse them. It is thus the only complete book on the subject available at present. Review "I recommend the book for use in entry-level digital and analog circuit design classes." (IEEE Circuits and Devices, May/June 2006) "...provides a comprehensive guide to designing CMOS ICs...by using the software, the book becomes a truly interactive learning experience." (Electronic Design Online, June 14, 2005) "…offering a vital contemporary view of a wide range of analog/digital circuit blocks, the BSIM model, data converter architectures, and much more." (IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Newsletter, October 2004) Product Description 2007 Winner of the Frederick Emmons Terman Award CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation, Second Edition covers the practical design of both analog and digital integrated circuits, offering a vital contemporary view of a wide range of analog/digital circuit blocks, the BSIM model, data converter architectures, and much more. This edition takes a two-path approach to the topics; design techniques are developed for both long- and short-channel CMOS technologies and then compared. The results are multidimensional explanations that allow readers deep insight into the design process. Features include: * Integrated-circuit layout software for Windows designed by David Boyce * Updated materials to reflect CMOS technology's movement into nanometer sizes * Discussions on phase- and delay-locked loops, mixed-signal circuits, data converters, and circuit noise * More than 1,000 figures, 200 examples, an Read more...

Readers should start a campaign to reprint and/or get a new edition of this book. Professor Paul Lorrain is not only a recipient of the Legion of Honor of France and the equivalent of Montreal, Canada, but his book is a work of CREATIVE GENIUS. His problems contain very interesting applications of electromagnetism which both the public and specialists can identify with, including magnetic monopoles (very strange theoretical entities with only one pole instead of the usual north and south poles of magnets - see my reviews of Kursunoglu, Frolov, Klapdor-Kleingothaus, etc.) that are predicted by physics Grand Unified Theories, superconductors which have turned out to have remarkably important uses today (and the ferromagnetism which is closely related to them), the earth's magnetic field which is related to modern geophysics, hysteresis which is related to an important modern branch of nonlinear mathematics as well, artificial satellites which are so important today, solar wind which is extremely important today, and even the theory of continuous creation of electric charge. In addition, there are many chapters on electromagnetics in relativity (see my reviews of Weinberg and Misner et al.), Maxwell's equations, magnetic fields, electric fields, plane electromagnetic waves (see my review of A. Bohm), guided waves, radiation. Lorrain makes electromagnetism interesting, open minded on new ideas, and interdisciplinary, all characteristics of Creative Genius. The general public shou Read more...

Product Description Experienced product designers are increasingly expected to be adept at incorporating a range of components into their designs. Students and experimenters too need to look beyond basic circuits and devices to achieve adequate design solutions. For those experienced in engineering design, this is the guide to electric motors. This book will allow engineers and designers to marry the technologies they know about with motor technology, and hence to incorporate motors into their products. Of the many good books on motors, such as Electric Motors and Drives by Hughes, none offer the engineering professional a tailored guide to motors taking into account their expertise. This book fills that gap. Irving Gottlieb is a leading author of many books for practising engineers, technicians and students of electronic and electrical engineering. Practical approach with minimum theory Covers a core area ignored by many electronics texts Shows how to incorporate motors into electronic products Book Info Helps engineers and designers to merge the technologies they know about with motor technology, and helps to incorporate motors into their products. Topics cover practical aspects of AC and DC motors and practical problems. Paper.
