Spin magazine "Entertaining and educational...a crash course for aspiring rock gods."" Entertainment Weekly "Wonderfully frank." The story of Guns N' Roses is one of the most controversial in rock n' roll history. GNR has had a famously terse relationship with journalists and authors, and in recent years, former band members have publicly disagreed about the "real story" in the press. The band even threatened bodily harm to journalists in the lyrics of the Use Your Illusion albums! For the first time ever, someone on the inside has gone on record with to describe the genesis of the band, how they wrote and performed one of the most definitive rock albums of all time, the changes in the band's lineup, and finally, the implosion of all things GNR related. Who knew it would be the notoriously private lead guitarist, a soft-spoken man hidden behind a famous mop of hair, who would step up and tell the story? Slash's memoir is the diary of a dope fiend (released a month after the autobiography of his friend and former heroin-buddy Nikki Sixx). Well, the diary of a dope-, and women- and coke- and crack- and alcohol-fiend. Have anything else debaucherous? The late 1980's and 1990's Slash would have tried it for sure. During one cocaine-induced hallucination of an attack by blue-gray Predator-like creatures with machine guns, Slash punched out his glass shower door and ran naked into the streets in terror. The incident got Slash into rehab, but no sooner than his limo drive Read more...

From the New England Journal of Medicine, September 6, 2001 This book contains expert summaries of various aspects of plant-based, or meatless, diets. It provides not only ethical, moral, and religious viewpoints from different periods of history but also modern perspectives on health promotion and disease prevention. The editor, Joan Sabate, is a physician and nutrition specialist who for several decades has been a principal investigator in observational and intervention studies of health promotion among Seventh-Day Adventists. He has recruited an international group of authors and many of his colleagues at Loma Linda University for this collection. That the 26 contributors include only 2 physicians may indicate the need for this book, since the overall impression the book leaves is that vegetarian diets are safe, palatable, healthy, and at times curative. The material is presented succinctly, with good use of tables, and is referenced appropriately. Vegetarian diets may be classified as lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, or vegan, respectively, if they include dairy products, eggs, both dairy products and eggs, or no animal products at all. The macrobiotic diet is an extremely restrictive vegetarian diet that is not nutritionally adequate and leads to malnutrition, especially in children. The book's synopsis of growth studies involving children and adolescents who are vegetarians provides data on children from birth to 18 years of age. Lacto-ovo- o Read more...

Book Description Originally published in 1904, this cookbook provides a fascinating insight into the huge variety of wholesome vegetarian dishes that were available a century ago. Fulton has treated the subject from the commonly accepted definition of the term vegetarianism, which means to abstain from flesh foods, but allows the use of eggs, milk, and its products. After studying the vegetarian restaurants and the food questions for many years, Fulton has placed before you a book containing instruction in the preparation of wholesome dishes that will build up in place of tearing down the body. Foreword Textbooks on heat transfer u'sually concentrate on the analysis of heat transfer processes and either devote only a small amount of space to the discussion of measurement techniques or exclude this subject completely. On the other hand, special problems are encountered in heat transfer measurements and experience is required when accurate results are desired. course on "Measurement Techniques in Heat Transfer" was held in June, 1968, at the University of Minnesota, organized by its Extension Division with lectures presented by the staff of the Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer Division of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Minnesota, and by speakers from other organizations who are specialists in the subjects of their lectures. Papers based on these lectures have been collected at the suggestion of the Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development and form the content of this book. For this reason, a special summer Temperature measurements in a heat transfer situation should not be considered without a check on possible systematic errors caused by conduction, radiation or, in an unsteady situation, heat capacity effects. Section 1 discusses these errors and the means to calculate them. Section 2 discusses resistance thermometers, thermocouples, and pyrometers, their calibration and use for temperature measurements. Amazon.com Whatever your reason for writing, Peter Elbow has a "recipe" to guide you. A longtime proponent of "freewriting" (writing without stopping, for a preset amount of time), Elbow incorporates its use in a variety of ways. Have a limited amount of time? Spend half of it freewriting and half of it cleaning up your prose. Got all the time in the world (and only a vague sense of what you want to say)? Freewrite, then focus, then freewrite, then focus, repeatedly, until you get "a trustworthy vision of your final piece of writing." Elbow offers a plethora of prompts for priming the creative pump, as well as several ways to revise the piece of writing that results: thorough revising, revising with feedback, cutting and pasting, proofreading, and the like. He pays close attention to the ways in which focusing on an audience can assist or interfere in the writing process, including a terrific chapter on the strangeness of writing for teachers, in which "your task is usually to explain what you are still engaged in trying to understand to someone who understands it better." And he provides an excellent section on how to solicit the kind of feedback you want. Though it is a new edition of a 1981 book, there is nothing tired about Writing with Power: it provides many tools to help a writer feel empowered throughout the writing process. --Jane Steinberg Review "Students for the first time are excited about being able to transform their thoughts into clear language with a ne Read more...
