on Bentley is recongized as one of the great authorities on Computer Programming and also as one of the best writers in the field. In this book he gives practical advice on improving the efficiency (optimizing) and the limits there of. While showing how to trade off speed for space or vice-versa, he points out the limits that can be expected to gain. His list of techniques is a collection of practical approaches rather than theoretical possibilities.
At 158 pages (not counting index) this book is eminently readable, accessable and useful. Clearly written and well organized this is a book to keep on your shelf for when a program needs improving. It is also a book to read before a program as a reminder not to make things complicated with optimization that aren't needed. Read more...

This volume presents the subject of image processing and analysis to the point of view of the user. The standard algorithms, procedures and rules of thumb are explained in the context of successful application to biological or medical images and chapters cover image acquisition, processing, analysis and pattern recognition. This approach equips the user with the necessary background for informed use of image processing software, and the ability to write their own programs if need be. There are explanations of more advanced techniques, such as the reconstruction, mapping and warping of 3D images, and each has reference to specific applications. This is an extremely usable, practical guide for the beginning postgraduate biologist or medical researcher. Read more...

The Encyclopedia of Love in World Religions is the first reference work to offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary investigation of the subject of love in the classic and contemporary literature of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and in other world religions, cultures, and philosophies. With contributions by more than 190 scholars, the encyclopedia contains over 300 entries that examine the concepts, emotions, and relationships associated with love and world religions. Entries draw on the disciplines of religious studies, theology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, literary criticism, and history.
The transreligious scholarship features writings by major spiritual leaders and thinkers, who provide the framework for this cross-cultural study. Read more...

Computational hydraulics and hydrologic modeling are rapidly developing fields with a wide range of applications in areas ranging from wastewater disposal and stormwater management to civil and environmental engineering. These fields are full of promise, but the abundance of literature that now exists contains many new terms that are not always defined. Computational Hydraulics and Hydrology: An Illustrated Dictionary defines more that 4,000 basic terms and phrases related to water conveyance with emphasis on computational hydraulics and hydrologic modeling. Compiled by Nicolas G. Adrien, a noted consulting engineer with three decades of experience, this dictionary includes detailed references to actual modeling studies, nearly 100 illustrations, 150 equations and formulas, and many notations. It also includes a chapter of application examples and another containing more than 6,000 related terms with a list of resources where interested readers can find additional definitions. Other dictionaries and glossaries related to these areas tend to be either dated or much narrower in scope. This dictionary offers broad, practice-based coverage of terms culled directly from the latest texts, references, and actual engineering reports. Computational Hydraulics and Hydrology: An Illustrated Dictionary stands alone in providing ready access to the vocabulary of these subjects. Read more...

"...an exciting well-written book which will give much enjoyment to a reader..." (Mathematical Reviews, 2003f)
"...an exciting well-written book which will give much enjoyment to a reader..." -- Mathematical Reviews, 2003f --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
Product Description
This Third Edition of The Probabilistic Method reflects the most recent developments in the field while maintaining the standard of excellence that established this book as the leading reference on probabilistic methods in combinatorics. Maintaining its clear writing style, illustrative examples, and practical exercises, this new edition emphasizes methodology, enabling readers to use probabilistic techniques for solving problems in such fields as theoretical computer science, mathematics, and statistical physics.
The book begins with a description of tools applied in probabilistic arguments, including basic techniques that use expectation and variance as well as the more recent applications of martingales and correlation inequalities. Next, the authors examine where probabilistic techniques have been applied successfully, exploring such topics as discrepancy and random graphs, circuit complexity, computational geometry, and derandomization of randomized algorithms. Sections labeled "The Probabilistic Lens" offer additional insights into the application of the probabilistic approach, and the appendix has been updated to include methodologies for finding lower bounds for Larg Read more...

This essential guide to paradoxes takes the reader on a lively tour of puzzles that have taxed thinkers from Zeno to Galileo and Lewis Carroll to Bertrand Russell. Michael Clark uncovers an array of conundrums, such as Achilles and the Tortoise, Theseus' Ship, Hempel's Raven, and the Prisoners' Dilemma, taking in subjects as diverse as knowledge, ethics, science, art and politics. Clark discusses each paradox in non-technical terms, considering its significance and looking at likely solutions. He also includes a full glossary.
