The complex nature of human ecology is examined in this encyclopedia. Entries are drawn from the studies of individuals and groups (as in psychology and sociology, for example); from the professions "intended to enhance individual and family life" (education, public health, etc.); and from the various disciplines and professions that study environments, both natural and designed. A sampling from the more than 250 entries includes Aging and technology, Air quality, Child and family poverty, Cognitive and language skills, Contemporary men's movement, Evolution, Family diversity, Functional clothing design, Gender and environment, Juvenile justice system, Osteoporosis, Sustainable development, and Youth sports. Profiles of individuals who have contributed significantly to the field of human ecology are given entries, among them Erik Erikson, Arnold Gesell, and Margaret Mead. Each of these entries provides a brief biographical sketch in addition to a discussion of the individual's work and contributions. The encyclopedia is arranged in alphabetical order. Following each entry is a see also note listing related topics and a "References and Further Reading" section. Complete bibliographic citations range in number from 5 or 6 for some entries to 30 for others. The cited works generally refer to the literature of recent years and should be readily available for more detailed study. Some entries are accompanied by black-and-white photographs. Read more...

The companion book to Ian Kerner's smash success She Comes First, He Comes Next offers women his sometimes radical, always expert advice on everything from the nature of male desire to sex-techniques that work. While women everywhere benefited from Ian Kerner's sexual philosophy of female pleasure in She Comes First, now it's time to learn all about what turns men on and makes them stay on. In He Comes Next, Kerner covers every angle of male sexuality, illuminates the most common sex-life ruts, and offers practical, knowledgeable answers to women's most frequently asked questions. In his role as a sex therapist, Kerner has spoken with countless men not only about the best sex they ever had, but also perhaps more important about the best sex they never had -- experiences they always desired and fantasized about, but were afraid to share with their partners. In the spirit of "full exposure," He Comes Next is the closest you'll ever come to waking up in a guy's skin and knowing what truly makes him sexually tick. Sexual pleasure goes beyond tips and tactics, however. Our sexual identities -- and the expression, gratification, and growth of these identities -- is fundamental to the success of our intimate relationships. With step-by-step and -- yes -- blow-by-blow detail, Kerner provides a clear, concise, achievable vision of sexual pleasure, one in which each technique forwards the action and where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Written in the same witt Read more...

Sky and Telescope's celestial atlases are the standard by which all others have been judged for a half century. Now they have raised the bar with their new Pocket Sky Atlas! There has never been such a wonderfully detailed atlas so handy to take on trips and use at the telescope, thanks to its compact size, convenient spiral-bound design, and easy-to read labels. The 80 charts contain more than 30,000 stars to magnitude 7.6 and some 1,500 deep-sky objects (including 675 galaxies to magnitude 11.5). The best double stars are named, and three dozen red (carbon) stars are marked. The charts show constellation boundaries and stick figures to help you find your way. In the back are close-up charts of the Orion Nebula region, Pleiades, Virgo Galaxy Cluster, and Large Magellanic Cloud. Read more...

The alarming consequences of global climate change have highlighted the need to take urgent steps to combat the causes of air pollution. Hence, understanding the Earthrsquo;s atmosphere is a vital component in Manrsquo;s emerging quest for developing sustainable modes of behavior in the 21st century. Written by a team of expert scientists, the Handbook of Atmospheric Science provides a broad and up-to-date account of our understanding of the natural processes that occur within the atmosphere. It examines how human activities have had a detrimental effect on the climate, and how measures may be implemented in order to modify these activities. The book progresses through chapters covering the principles of atmospheric science and the current problems of air pollution at the urban, regional, and global scales, to the tools and applications used to understand air pollution. The Handbook of Atmospheric Science offers an excellent overview of this multidisciplinary subject and will prove invaluable to both students and researchers of atmospheric science, air pollution, and global change. This book covers a wide area of the atmospheric science, focusing particularly on those physical and dynamical aspects of our environment which tend to create heat sources and sinks in the earth-atmosphere system and which it seeks to balance through circulation at different time and space scales. The processes of heat transfer in the atmosphere and ocean by general circulation and by waves and oscillations are discussed in detail. The heat balance of the atmosphere is considered, after taking into consideration the role of various types of greenhouse gases that may be present. In this context, the publication of the book will be very timely and will be welcomed by all those interested in knowing more about our atmosphere and the way it works, especially with regard to the contentious issue of global warming by greenhouse gases released by human activities on earth. Starting with the origin, composition and structure of the atmosphere, the physics part deals with the laws of heat and thermodynamics of dry and moist air, water vapor and its transformation into different phases and formation of cloud and rain under different stability conditions, solar and terrestrial radiation and their impact on the gaseous envelope in different layers of the atmosphere which create sources and sinks in different parts of the atmosphere especially in its boundary layers. The dynamics part highlights the various types of motion systems including the general circulation of waves and oscillat Read more...

Lewis Fry Richardson dreamt that scientific weather prediction would one day become a practical reality. Before his ideas could bear fruit several advances were needed: better understanding of the dynamics of the atmosphere; stable computational algorithms to integrate the equations; regular observations of the free atmosphere; and powerful automatic computer equipment. By 1950 advances in all these fronts were sufficient to permit the first computer forecast to be made. Over the ensuing fifty years progress in numerical weather prediction has been dramatic. Weather prediction and climate modelling have now reached a high level of sophistication. This book tells the story of Richardson's trial forecast, and the fulfilment of his dream of practical numerical weather forecasting. It includes a complete reconstruction of Richardson's forecast, and analyses in detail the causes of his failure. This will appeal to everyone involved in numerical weather forecasting, from researchers and graduate students to professionals. Read more...
