QoS Over Heterogeneous Networks, by Mario Marchese
Wiley | June 15, 2007 | English | ISBN: 047001752X | PDF | 330 Pages | 7,27 Mb

The importance of quality of service (QoS) has risen with the recent evolution of telecommunication networks, which are characterised by a great heterogeneity. While many applications require a specific level of assurance from the network; communication networks are characterized by different service providers, transmission means and implementer solutions such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4), IPv6 and MPLS.

Providing comprehensive coverage of QoS issues within heterogeneous network environments, УQoS Over Heterogeneous NetworksФ looks to find solutions to questions such as does QoS fit within heterogeneous networks and what is the impact on performance if information traverses different network portions that implement specific QoS schemes.

Includes:
- A series of algorithms and protocols to help solve potential QoS problems.
- State of the art case studies and operative examples to illustrate points made.
- Information on QoS mapping in terms of service-level specification (SLS) and an in-depth discussion of related issues
- Chapters end-to-end (E2E) QoS, QoS architecture, QoS over heterogeneous networks and QoS internetworking and mapping.

An ideal book for graduate students, researchers and lecturers. System designers, developers and engineers will also find УQoS Over Heterogeneous NetworksФ a valuable reference.

System Level Design Model with Reuse of System IP
Springer | 1 edition | September 30, 2003 | ISBN-10: 1402075944 | 220 pages | PDF | 6.25mb

System Level Design Model with Reuse of System IP addresses system design by providing a framework for assessing and developing system design practices that observe and utilise reuse of system design know-how. The know-how accumulated in the companies represents an intellectual asset, or property (’IP’). The current situation regarding system design in general is, that the methods are insufficient, informally practised, and weakly supported by formal techniques and tools.

Regarding system design reuse the methods and tools for exchanging system design data and know-how within companies are ad hoc and insufficient. The means available inside companies being already insufficient, there are actually no ways of exchanging between companies. To establish means for systematic reuse, the required system design concepts are identified through an analysis of existing design flows, and their definitions are catalogued in the form of a glossary and taxonomy. The System Design Conceptual Model (SDCM) formalises the concepts and their relationships by providing meta-models for both the system design process (SDPM) and the system under design (SUDM). The models are generic enough so that they can be applied in various organisations and for various kinds of electronic systems. System design patterns are presented as example means for enhancing reuse. The characteristics of system-level IP, a list of heuristic criteria of system-IP reusability, and guidelines for assessing system IP reusability within a particular design flow provide a pragmatic view to reuse. An analysis of selected languages and formalisms, and guidelines for the analysis of system-level languages provides means for assessing how the expression and representation of system design concepts are supported by languages.

Advanced Applications

Rob Pooley, Pauline Wilcox, «Applying UML: Advanced Applications»
Butterworth-Heinemann | ISBN: 0750656832 | 2003 | PDF | 352 pages | 10 MB

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose notation language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a programmer defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure. Applying UML addresses the practical issues faced by users in adopting UML. As the title suggests, it helps the reader in actually applying UML to real life situations, rather than just in learning the language. The book covers in depth detail of UML, including notation on profiles and extensions. The scope of the book assumes prior experience in software engineering and/or business modeling, an understanding of object-oriented concepts and a basic knowledge of UML.

Introduction to Microcontrollers: Architecture, Programming, and Interfacing for the Motorola 68HC12 (Academic Press Series in Engineering): G. Jack Lipovski
Academic Press | ISBN: 0124518311 | October 15, 1999 | PDF (OCR) | 394 pages | 28.20 Mb

Introduction to Microcontrollers is a comprehensive introductory text/reference for electrical and computer engineers, students, and even hobbyists who have little experience in a high-level programming language. The book helps them understand how a typical microcontroller executes assembly language instructions and addressing modes on microprocessors. The book shows how to program with C++ and compile assembly language statements.

The book utilizes the new 16-bit microcontroller, the Motorola 68Hc12, as the primary example. This “chip” replaces the very popular 8-bit microcontroller, the 68Hc11, as the leading microprocessor for a wide variety of applications and as a core tool for teaching engineering students. This new microcontroller is expected to be popular in industry because of its low cost per unit, low power consumption, and high processing speed.

A Guide to Intelligent Systems (2nd Edition)

Michael Negnevitsky, «Artificial Intelligence: A Guide to Intelligent Systems (2nd Edition)»
Addison Wesley | ISBN: 0321204662 | 2004 | PDF | 440 pages | 12.22 MB

Artificial Intelligence is often perceived as being a highly complicated, even frightening subject in Computer Science. This view is compounded by books in this area being crowded with complex matrix algebra and differential equations - until now. This book, evolving from lectures given to students with little knowledge of calculus, assumes no prior programming experience and demonstrates that most of the underlying ideas in intelligent systems are, in reality, simple and straightforward. Are you looking for a genuinely lucid, introductory text for a course in A.I or Intelligent Systems Design? Perhaps you¿re a non-computer science professional looking for a self-study guide to the state-of-the art in knowledge based systems? Either way, you can¿t afford to ignore this book.

Incident Response and Computer Forensics, Second Edition
Publisher: McGraw-Hill/Osborne | ISBN: 007222696X | edition 2003 | PDF | 546 pages | 15 mb

A strong system of defenses will save your systems from falling victim to published and otherwise uninventive attacks, but even the most heavily defended system can be cracked under the right conditions. Incident Response aims to teach you how to determine when an attack has occurred or is underway–they’re often hard to spot–and show you what to do about it. Authors Kevin Mandia and Chris Prosise favor a tools- and procedures-centric approach to the subject, thereby distinguishing this book from others that catalog particular attacks and methods for dealing with each one.

The approach is more generic, and therefore better suited to dealing with newly emerging attack techniques. Anti-attack procedures are presented with the goal of identifying, apprehending, and successfully prosecuting attackers. The advice on carefully preserving volatile information, such as the list of processes active at the time of an attack, is easy to follow. The book is quick to endorse tools, the functionalities of which are described so as to inspire creative applications. Information on bad-guy behavior is top quality as well, giving readers knowledge of how to interpret logs and other observed phenomena. Mandia and Prosise don’t–and can’t–offer a foolproof guide to catching crackers in the act, but they do offer a great “best practices” guide to active surveillance. –David Wall

Learning UML
Publisher: O’Reilly Media | ISBN: 0596003447 | edition 2003 | CHM | 304 pages | 1,26 mb

Learning UML introduces the Unified Modeling Language and leads you through an orderly progress towards mastery of the language. You’ll begin by learning how UML is used to model the structure of a system. Many key UML concepts, especially that of the general (classes) versus the specific (objects), are illustrated in the chapter on class and object diagrams. Next, you’ll learn how to use use-case diagrams to model the functionality of a system. Finally, you’ll see how component and deployment diagrams are used to model the way in which a system is deployed in a physical environment. You’ll learn how to use sequence and collaboration, to model the interaction over time between system components, how to use state diagrams to describe the life cycle of system components, and how to use activity diagrams to document control-flow and responsibility. Throughout this book, author Sinan Si Alhir maintains a clear focus on UML the language and avoids getting caught up in the cobwebs of methodology. His presentation is direct and to-the-point. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises that you can use to test your growing knowledge of UML and its concepts.

Carlos Andrés Peña-Reyes “Coevolutionary Fuzzy Modeling (Lecture Notes in Computer Science)”
Springer | English | 2004-11-23 | ISBN: 3540229949 | 129 pages | PDF | 5,6 MB

Building on fuzzy logic and evolutionary computing, this book introduces fuzzy cooperative coevolution as a novel approach to systems design, conductive to explaining human decision process. Fuzzy cooperative coevolution is a methodology for constructing systems able to accurately predict the outcome of a decision-making process, while providing an understandable explanation of the underlying reasoning.

The central contribution of this work is the use of an advanced evolutionary technique, cooperative coevolution, for dealing with the simultaneous design of connective and operational parameters. Cooperative doevolution overcomes several limitations exhibited by other standard evolutionary approaches.

The applicability of fuzzy cooperative coevolution is validated by modeling the decision processes of three real-world problems, an iris data benchmark problem and two problems from breast cancer diagnosis.

Global Specification and Validation of Embedded Systems: Integrating Heterogeneous Components
Springer; 1 edition | ISBN: 140206151X | 148 pages | June 15, 2007 | PDF | 3 Mb

Global modelling and validation is required to master the design of systems made of heterogeneous components. These systems are now omnipresent in our life, and they may be found in several domains such as communications (ex. mobile terminals, optical switches), health (e.g. cardiac stimulators, cochlear implants), transportation (ex. automotive and aeronautical), etc.

The main difficulties for their design are modelling and validation of the interactions between different components (hardware, software, analogue, RF, optical and micro-mechanical).

Global Specification and Validation of Embedded Systems offers a deep understanding of concepts and practices behind the composition of heterogeneous components. After the analysis of existing computation and execution models used for the specification and validation of different sub-systems, the book introduces a systematic approach to build an execution model for systems composed of heterogeneous components. Mixed continuous/discrete and hardware/software systems will be used to illustrate these concepts. The benefit of reading this book is to give a clear vision on the theory and practice of specification and validation of complex modern systems. The examples give to the designers solutions applicable in their daily practice.

SHAPE FROM POSITIONAL-CONTRAST: Characterising Sketches with Qualitative Line Arrangements
duv | ISBN: 3835060708 | 214 pages | January 1, 2007 | PDF | 1 Mb
Graphical queries for the purpose of searching for pictorial information are of growing interest in areas where pictures provide valuable information, including, for instance, design, architecture, and engineering. Sketching graphical queries is a natural way of revealing the visual appearence of objects one has in mind.

Björn Goffried develops computationally effective concepts for dealing with shape, in particular imprecise and incomplete sketched shapes. He exemplarily applies his method using graphical queries to search for historical objects. Specifying objects graphically, he shows that the new method is in fact capable of dealing with imprecise sketches.

Jennifer Golbeck, “Computing with Social Trust”
Springer 2008 | ISBN-10: 1848003552 | 338 Pages | PDF | 14,6 MB
‘Trust’ is used in a variety of ways in computing literature, and social trust is emerging as an important computational problem. In open, distributed systems, like the web, people and organizations can be anonymous and trust and reputation become important. Researchers from many subfields of computer science have produced results in this space, with applications such as security, recommender systems, and knowledge management.

However, this wide interest also means that research is published in diverse venues, and thus results published in one area can go unnoticed by researchers in a different area. For scientists beginning to work in the area, discovering the relevant literature and developing a comprehensive understanding of the state of the art is difficult for similar reasons.

The goal of this book is to bring together a collection of important work in computing social trust from computer science and related disciplines, and give readers a full view of the subject. It will be divided into three major sections. The first will address theory, behaviour, and trust management. This will cover social analyses of how people develop trust, the dynamics of trust relationships, and systems for trust management. The second section will describe algorithms and methods for computing trust in social contexts. Social networks, profile similarity, and participation in online communities are all potential sources from which trust can be computed. The final section will contain applications that use trust, such as recommender systems, website access control, and email filtering.

Publisher: Packt Publishing Limited 2009 | 476 Pages | ISBN: 1847196748 | PDF | 11 MB

Build feature-rich online stores with Joomla! 1.0/1.5 and VirtueMart 1.1.x
Build your own e-commerce web site from scratch by adding features step-by-step to an example e-commerce web site
Configure the shop, build product catalogues, configure user registration settings for VirtueMart to take orders from around the world
Manage customers, orders, and a variety of currencies to provide the best customer service

Handle shipping in all situations and deal with sales tax rules
Covers customization of site look and feel and localization of VirtueMart
In Detail
VirtueMart is a widely used component for adding e-commerce to a Joomla! site. VirtueMart covers all the aspects of e-commerce in an easy-to-use fashion and allows administrators to configure the various factors such as those of the shop, selling workflow, payment, products, and more. It also has many other features, which include managing customers and orders, so that every aspect of the shop is handled on-line for your comfort.
This book demonstrates the setting up of an on-line Joomla! e-commerce site from scratch using VirtueMart. It focuses specifically on e-commerce and VirtueMart. It teaches all the aspects of quickly setting up a feature-packed, easy-to-build e-commerce site–from basic installation and configuration of Joomla and VirtueMart through adding features step-by-step to an example web site to deployment.
The book begins with an introduction to VirtueMart with an explanation of its capabilities and how you can use it to earn money from your Joomla! site. This is followed by the necessary installation and configuration of Joomla! and VirtueMart to enable you to lay the foundation of your web site. Then it explains configuration of the VirtueMart store, which includes payment and shipping methods, configuring zones, and currencies.
The book then looks at managing products, customers, and orders, and customizing the web site appearance, all through demonstration so that you can build your own store with minimum effort, investment, and time. It also illustrates the promotion and public-relations factors such as banner ads, featured products, coupons, and more, so that you can build a wide customer base. It follows this up with examples of more advanced features such as localization and using extensions for bulk import/export of products to your VirtueMart shop, to suit your individual store needs. Maintenance, troubleshooting, and security, which are essential for running your site, are also explained. There is also an Appendix provided for configuring shipping and payment modules.
What you will learn from this book?
Install/Uninstall Joomla! components, plug-ins, and modules; install the VirtueMart component and its modules, to start building your store.
Configure the shop, create and use the appropriate zones and currencies, configure payment methods, shipping methods, and taxes, which form part of the most essential shop functionalities.
Manage manufacturers and vendors, products and product categories, and watch your VirtueMart shop take real shape with the products you want to sell.
Configure user registration settings for VirtueMart, manage users and user groups, create and use order status types, view order statistics and order details, update orders, and manage inventory, which will ease your apprehensions about customer service.
Install and configure new themes, customize the Joomla! template, customize VirtueMart themes and layouts, and use search engine friendly (SEF) URLs to attract more customers to your shop.
Use VirtueMart’s promotional tools such as banner ads, specials, featured products, newsletters, product notifications, and more, which are important factors in determining the success of your business.
Add further value to your shop by using different regions and region-specific taxes, multiple currencies, installing new languages, and translating the language of the site.
Learn to add third-party extensions to further broaden VirtueMart functions for bulk import/export of products to your shop catalogue, update multiple product information at the same time using AJAX, and display slideshows with product images to spice up your shop further.
Finally, learn to move the shop to your server, to back up and restore files and databases, and also about security, maintenance, and troubleshooting as a final step to complete your brand-new VirtueMart shop!
Approach
This is a step-by-step tutorial-style guide, which teaches you to build an e-commerce site through a complete practical example.
Who this book is written for?
Are you a Joomla! user who wants to build an e-commerce store? Do you have a Joomla! site and want to add e-commerce to it to sell products? Then this book is for you! The pre-requisites are simple. You should already know how to build a site with Joomla!, have a smattering of CSS/HTML and perhaps some PHP.

Alan P. Parkes, “A Concise Introduction to Languages and Machines (Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science)”
Springer | 2008-09-05 | ISBN: 1848001207 | 346 pages | PDF | 5,8 MB
This easy-to-follow text provides an accessible introduction to the key topics of formal languages and abstract machines within Computer Science. The author follows the successful formula of his first book on this subject, this time making these core computing topics more fundamental and providing an excellent foundation for undergraduates.

The book is divided into two parts, Languages and Machines and Machines and Computation. The first part is concerned with formal language theory, as it applies to Computer Science, whereas Part 2 considers the computational properties of the machines in more detail. This text is deliberately non-mathematical and, wherever possible, links theory to practical considerations, in particular the implications for programming, computation and problem solving. Written in an informal style, this textbook assumes only a basic knowledge of programming on the part of the reader.

Features:

• Clear explanations of formal notation and jargon

• Extensive use of examples to illustrate algorithms and proofs

• Pictorial representations of key concepts

• Chapter-opening overviews providing an introduction and guidance to each topic

• An introductory chapter supplies the reader with a solid overview

• End-of-chapter exercises and solutions

This reader-friendly textbook has been written with undergraduates in mind and will be suitable for use on courses covering formal languages, computability, automata theory and computational linguistics. It will also make an excellent supplementary text for courses on algorithm complexity and compilers.

Enjoy this great book! Brought to you by SMIRK

TEX in Practice: Volume 1: Basics (Monographs in Visual Communication)
Springer | ISBN: 0387975950 | 1993-07-09 | PDF | 386 pages | 15 Mb
TEX has always been regarded as the most elegant and powerful system for computer typesetting. However, its widespread use, beyond academia, was hampered by its complexity. Recently, fairly good TEX implementations have come out for PCs putting TEX on the desks of many people: writers, designers, desktop publishers, engineers, and consequently, the interest in TEX has surged.

What is needed at this point is a book that teaches step-by-step how to use TEX, illustrating each step by meaningful examples. This is exactly what S.v. Bechtolsheim’s book does. It is a tutorial and guide for the first-time users of TEX, as well as a reference for the most experienced “TEXpert.” TEX in Practice will appear as a four volume set, starting with volume 1 Basics, followed by volume 2 Paragraphs, Math and Fonts, volume 3 Tokens, Macros and volume 4 Output Routines, Tables. TEX in Practice will be an indispensable reference for the TEX community and a guide through the first steps for the TEX novice.

An Introduction to Error Correcting Codes with Applications
Springer | ISBN: 0792390172 | 1989-05-31 | PDF | 320 pages | 3 Mb
I was taught by one of the authors of this book (Vanstone) and greatly appreciated the book after the course. This book is a very solid introduction to ECCs which starts from very basic block codes (with simple generators) and develops/introduces the required abstract algebric theory which eventually lead to modern Solomon-Reed codes.

The merit of this book lies in the fact that it does what the title says and provides an introduction, which build the fundamentals for advanced research in this area. I read the book with minimal knowledge of error correcting and now can fully appreciate the capabilities of modern electronic devices and the ability error correcting provides.

Only problem as noted in another review, the darned price!
