Alan P. Parkes, “A Concise Introduction to Languages and Machines (Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science)”
Springer | 2008-09-05 | ISBN: 1848001207 | 346 pages | PDF | 5,8 MB
This easy-to-follow text provides an accessible introduction to the key topics of formal languages and abstract machines within Computer Science. The author follows the successful formula of his first book on this subject, this time making these core computing topics more fundamental and providing an excellent foundation for undergraduates.

The book is divided into two parts, Languages and Machines and Machines and Computation. The first part is concerned with formal language theory, as it applies to Computer Science, whereas Part 2 considers the computational properties of the machines in more detail. This text is deliberately non-mathematical and, wherever possible, links theory to practical considerations, in particular the implications for programming, computation and problem solving. Written in an informal style, this textbook assumes only a basic knowledge of programming on the part of the reader.

Features:

• Clear explanations of formal notation and jargon

• Extensive use of examples to illustrate algorithms and proofs

• Pictorial representations of key concepts

• Chapter-opening overviews providing an introduction and guidance to each topic

• An introductory chapter supplies the reader with a solid overview

• End-of-chapter exercises and solutions

This reader-friendly textbook has been written with undergraduates in mind and will be suitable for use on courses covering formal languages, computability, automata theory and computational linguistics. It will also make an excellent supplementary text for courses on algorithm complexity and compilers.

Enjoy this great book! Brought to you by SMIRK

TEX in Practice: Volume 1: Basics (Monographs in Visual Communication)
Springer | ISBN: 0387975950 | 1993-07-09 | PDF | 386 pages | 15 Mb
TEX has always been regarded as the most elegant and powerful system for computer typesetting. However, its widespread use, beyond academia, was hampered by its complexity. Recently, fairly good TEX implementations have come out for PCs putting TEX on the desks of many people: writers, designers, desktop publishers, engineers, and consequently, the interest in TEX has surged.

What is needed at this point is a book that teaches step-by-step how to use TEX, illustrating each step by meaningful examples. This is exactly what S.v. Bechtolsheim’s book does. It is a tutorial and guide for the first-time users of TEX, as well as a reference for the most experienced “TEXpert.” TEX in Practice will appear as a four volume set, starting with volume 1 Basics, followed by volume 2 Paragraphs, Math and Fonts, volume 3 Tokens, Macros and volume 4 Output Routines, Tables. TEX in Practice will be an indispensable reference for the TEX community and a guide through the first steps for the TEX novice.

An Introduction to Error Correcting Codes with Applications
Springer | ISBN: 0792390172 | 1989-05-31 | PDF | 320 pages | 3 Mb
I was taught by one of the authors of this book (Vanstone) and greatly appreciated the book after the course. This book is a very solid introduction to ECCs which starts from very basic block codes (with simple generators) and develops/introduces the required abstract algebric theory which eventually lead to modern Solomon-Reed codes.

The merit of this book lies in the fact that it does what the title says and provides an introduction, which build the fundamentals for advanced research in this area. I read the book with minimal knowledge of error correcting and now can fully appreciate the capabilities of modern electronic devices and the ability error correcting provides.

Only problem as noted in another review, the darned price!

G. Schaefer, A. Hassanien, J. Jiang, “Computational Intelligence in Medical Imaging: Techniques and Applications”
hapman & Hall/CRC | 2009 | ISBN: 1420060597 | 504 pages | PDF | 5,5 MB

A compilation of the latest trends in the field, Computational Intelligence in Medical Imaging: Techniques and Applications explores how intelligent computing can bring enormous benefit to existing technology in medical image processing as well as improve medical imaging research. The contributors also cover state-of-the-art research toward integrating medical image processing with artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches.

The book presents numerous techniques, algorithms, and models. It describes neural networks, evolutionary optimization techniques, rough sets, support vector machines, tabu search, fuzzy logic, a Bayesian probabilistic framework, a statistical parts-based appearance model, a reinforcement learning-based multistage image segmentation algorithm, a machine learning approach, Monte Carlo simulations, and intelligent, deformable models. The contributors discuss how these techniques are used to classify wound images, extract the boundaries of skin lesions, analyze prostate cancer, handle the inherent uncertainties in mammographic images, and encapsulate the natural intersubject anatomical variance in medical images. They also examine prostate segmentation in transrectal ultrasound images, automatic segmentation and diagnosis of bone scintigraphy, 3-D medical image segmentation, and the reconstruction of SPECT and PET tomographic images.
