A six-issue mini series, starring Hawk-Owl and Woody, two characters who were purposefully designed as Marvel's versions of Batman and Robin. At the time of its publication, it was the only Ultimate title to introduce characters who were not explicitly based on pre-existing Marvel characters. Though it is impossible to recreate the original Batman, they've done a pretty good job. Also includes one issue invloving Captain America and The Ultimates.

The more appropriate name for this mini-series would be "Little Iron Man." It begins from the birth of Tony Stark, shows us his journey through science, and how he ends up building the Iron Man armour. There was supposed to be a follow-up series continuing from where this left off but Marvel suspended work for unkown reasons.

'The First' are a group of fictional gods who appear in a self-titled comic as well as other various comic books published by CrossGen. Styled after the Greek gods in many ways, the First represent very powerful, nearly immortal beings, who are each based on a certain emotion.

The full powers of The First were never clearly defined. They could kill ordinary humans (and alien) creatures by the thousands. However, they could kill each other so they were not immortal. They could create force fields and seem to have no need to eat or breath. They could teleport vast distances in an instant (across a galaxy) if they knew where they were going. They could change their shape and costume seemingly at will. They appear as gods on other worlds and they could transfer a bit of their own power to one (or more) ordinary mortals, making the effected mortal nearly god-like (see both Sigil and Scion). However, when faced with science fiction type technology (starships with immensely powerful lasers) it seemed The First could be defeated.

Avengers-Celestial Quest Mantis reappears in the Steve Englehart written Avengers: Celestial Quest mini-series. She returns to Earth and merges with her remaining fragmented portions of her personality (which we learn represent "freak, mother, prostitute, mystic and Avenger") after the first four are killed by Thanos (later retroactively declared to be a clone of the real Thanos). The final Mantis merges with them to become a "complete" Mantis for the first time since her dispersion. Thus reformed, she and a group of the Avengers go into space to stop "Thanos" from killing her son, who by this time is a rebellious teenager desperate to leave the isolation of the Cotati homeworld and travel the stars. The story takes place before (and coinciding with) the events in the movie and provide a bit of a back-story for John Doe and his victims.

It's interesting how Superman played pivotal roles in seminal Batman works such as The Dark Knight Returns and Hush, but the opposite did not happen here. But that's a testament to the threat faced in this story and the very fast pacing that results from it. There's just no time for much thought or talk, given the short timespan of the encounter--a violent and heated brawl.
The source material for this trade paperback spanned the four different Superman publications at the time, as well as Justice League America. An ominous countdown sequence is started in Part 4: Every page in this chapter is composed of only four panels; the subsequent chapter (Part 5) only has three panels per page; Part 6 only has two panels per page; and Part 7 only one...
