Reign of Terror
In this "Elseworlds" tale, the Batman mythos is re-imagined against the backdrop of revolutionary-era France -- during the "reign of terror" of the title. Captain Bruce Wayne returns to Paris after fighting for the revolution, but his cynicism over what the revolution has become is intensified on seeing the state of affairs, leading him eventually to don a bat costume and fight against the very revolutionary government he supported.

League of Batmen
Here we open in the present, bounce back to the dark past, jump forwards to the future, then shoot back again. Basically Ra's has won - Bruce Wayne is dead, and a plague has wiped out huge portions of humanity.
Ra's perverted Bruce's memory by employing an army of Batmen to execute his will (and execute the populace). Bruce's and Talia's son destroyed the Brotherhood of the Batmen, and fought back. Now Ra's is dying, the virus is cured, and Tallant is triumphant. The stage is set for the hunting down of the Batmen, and the resurrection of the true Batman to take his place in destiny.

Brotherhood of Batman
Ra's Al Ghul has unleashed a virus that has killed billions. Batman is dead, but his wife (the Demon's daughter, Talia) and son, Tallant have survived. Talia shows her son that he is the son of Bruce Wayne; the son of the bat becomes the bat. He infiltrates his grandfather's "league of batmen," assassins in various bat costumes, and disables them one-by-one. Al Ghul's league defeated, he concedes Gotham to his grandson, the true Batman.

The Blue The Grey and The Bat
This story sends foppish Major Bruce Wayne to Nevada to secure the Union's claim on precious metals from the Comstock Lode. He (and his alter-ego, of course) employ the talents of Redbird, a 'breed with a dark past, and historical guests Samuel Clemens, Bill Hickok and Kit Carson.
The Blue, the Grey & the Bat captures the flavor of the Old West very well and, while harder to find more than a decade after its release, it's well worth scouring your local comic shops to find.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again
After going underground, Batman (Bruce Wayne) and his young sidekick, Catgirl (Carrie Kelly, Robin from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns), train an army of "batboys" to save the world from a "police-state" dictatorship. In a series of raids on government facilities, Batman's soldiers release from captivity aging superheroes including The Atom, The Flash and Plastic Man. Elongated Man is recruited from his job as a commercials spokesman, and Green Arrow was already working with Batman (as seen in the end of TDKR). Superman, working for the government, is ordered by the "President" (a front for Lex Luthor and Brainiac) to stop Batman. He confronts Wayne at the Batcave, but is defeated by Batman and the other superheroes.
Meanwhile, Batman's raids have not gone unnoticed by the media. After being banned for years, the freed superheroes have recaptured the public imagination, becoming a fad among youth. At a concert for the pop group "The Superchix", Batman and the other heroes make a public appearance, urging their fans to rebel against the oppressive government

In Darkest Night
Bruce Wayne -- you know, that guy who watched his parents die as a kid -- is sitting a home, pondering how to strike fear in the hearts of criminals. An alien spaceship crashes outside of Wayne Manor and Bruce is summoned outside, where he is give a ring of immense power. As Green Lantern of Earth, Wayne is sworn to uphold order and protect the innocent. He's also beholden to the guardians of Oa, something that the strong-willed Batman cannot easily accept.
With the power of the Lantern, Wayne is able to prevent the Red Hood from falling into a vat of chemicals and becoming the Joker. He has no trouble sweeping up crime. Some of his allies, however, have a hard time trusting him. In particular, James Gordon doesn't like the idea of one person wielding so much power. How often do we ever question Gordon's trust in Batman? Barr asserts that because, in continuity, Batman is a man, Gordon can find faith in him, but as more than a man, Gordon must remain guarded.

Batman of Arkham
Batman has had plenty of close encounters with the infamous Arkham Asylum. In this Elseworlds tale, circa 1900, Bruce Wayne runs the place -- a respected psychiatrist by day and a vigilante helping to fill the asylum's cells by night. His treatments are thorough and compassionate, a significant change from usual portrayals of the asylum, and he measures a fair success rate with his patients.
Meanwhile, the Joker is spreading his maniacal brand of madness through the city, and Jonathan Crane (in modern stories, the Scarecrow) is a subordinant member of the asylum staff with his own views on patient care. When Wayne falls victim to the Joker and is left in a manic state, Crane has the chance to work his harsher will on the patients.
This is a good story with appropriate atmosphere, but it attempts too much in 48 pages. We are expected to come to know this Elseworlds variations on so many characters -- also including Two-Face, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Scarface and the Ventriloquist, Dick Grayson, Commissioner Gordon and Alfred -- in such a limited span that the story itself never achieves much depth. Basically, Grant sets up the situation, allows a brief plot to develop with a few fisticuffs and gimmicks, and then it's over.

Evil's Might
Freedom was the promise America made to the Irish immigrant masses of 19th-century New York City - but it will take a Green Lantern to make sure they get it.
In a dangerous world of greed and corruption, political cartoonist Kyle Rayner trades in his pen for a ring of incredible power, all for the chance to take on -- and beat -- the forces of Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall.
