In Darkest Night

Bruce Wayne -- you know, that guy who watched his parents die as a kid -- is sitting a home, pondering how to strike fear in the hearts of criminals. An alien spaceship crashes outside of Wayne Manor and Bruce is summoned outside, where he is give a ring of immense power. As Green Lantern of Earth, Wayne is sworn to uphold order and protect the innocent. He's also beholden to the guardians of Oa, something that the strong-willed Batman cannot easily accept.

With the power of the Lantern, Wayne is able to prevent the Red Hood from falling into a vat of chemicals and becoming the Joker. He has no trouble sweeping up crime. Some of his allies, however, have a hard time trusting him. In particular, James Gordon doesn't like the idea of one person wielding so much power. How often do we ever question Gordon's trust in Batman? Barr asserts that because, in continuity, Batman is a man, Gordon can find faith in him, but as more than a man, Gordon must remain guarded.

Dark Knight Dynasty

Three ages of Batman: Medieval Past, Contemporary Present, Depressed Future.

Three linked stories in one GN, a hardback original last year out now in TPB format. The essential underlying storyline concerns Vandal Savage, the man who cannot die (well he can, he just regenerates after a period of time), and how he interacts with the Wayne-bloodline across three millenia

Dark Allegiances

Set in the late 1930s, this has Bruce Wayne as an industrial designer and a bit of a rougish swashbuckler (you know, the kind of character Howard Chaykin likes to do best) who dons the Bat costume as much to tackle racist secret society's like The White Legion, or to defend union workers from overzealous police, as much as he does street crime.

The story is pure 1950s film noire, though with a decided twinkle in the eye. The dialogue's snappy and witty as Batman uncovers a plot masterminded by a right wing senator and an entrepeneur who is Bruce Wayne's associate. There's a beautiful dame who's being blackmailed, an old fashioned Batman scene at a theme park made up of giant props, and a nice sense of period throughout, in the story and pictures, from the opening newsreel sequence on.

The period's not always as well served by the dialogue, though. Would they have really used colloquialisms such as "Kick his ass" back then?

Dark Allegiances is a great read for many reasons. There's the brisk tempo and scene layered on scene to form a real story, not just a couple of extended action scenes loosely strung together. There's Chaykin's crackling dialogue, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes amusing, frequently naughty, almost always on target. There's Chaykin's great, semi-realist art (though he rushes the hands at times). There's the clever lettering quirks of Ken Bruzenak and the evocative colouring. There's the evocative period ambience mixing nightclubs, political movements, and more. There's the fun way of "Elseworld" stories where familiar faces are worked in. Though here Chaykin takes a kind of odd track. Instead of inserting familiar Batman characters, he throws in characters who evoke them, but aren't quite them in look or name. The Penguin, Two-Face, the Joker, and the Catwoman are all represented, but Two-Face, for instance, isn't called Harvey Dent, he's a senator named Caldecott Pewtie.

Knight Gallery

In 1995 DC Comics decided to change Batman's costume once again. Various artists proposed over twenty new costume designs. DC Writers, Artists, and Editors met at the annual Bat-Meet to decide on a new costume based on the submitted designs.

The Bat-Team decided on a costume, but someone forgot to notify Warner Brothers for the upcoming movie. In that movie the Batman wore an all black rubber costume and so DC began drawing Batman in an all black suit, beginning in Batman 515 in February of 1995.[citation needed]

Doug Moench, who liked all of the ideas, thought it would be interesting to print them in a Bruce Wayne journal - Knight Gallery. The designs were printed in a standard comic format with a little bit of text as if Bruce Wayne were sketching designs in a journal and writing in what he liked and disliked about each design. Taking the idea one step further, Moench used the costumes in a set of Elseworlds books called Brotherhood of the Bat and The League of Batmen.

The Knight Gallery also included possible designs for Tim Drake's Robin costume, and sketches of the Gotham City skyline and Arkham Asylum.

Batman of Arkham

Batman has had plenty of close encounters with the infamous Arkham Asylum. In this Elseworlds tale, circa 1900, Bruce Wayne runs the place -- a respected psychiatrist by day and a vigilante helping to fill the asylum's cells by night. His treatments are thorough and compassionate, a significant change from usual portrayals of the asylum, and he measures a fair success rate with his patients.

Meanwhile, the Joker is spreading his maniacal brand of madness through the city, and Jonathan Crane (in modern stories, the Scarecrow) is a subordinant member of the asylum staff with his own views on patient care. When Wayne falls victim to the Joker and is left in a manic state, Crane has the chance to work his harsher will on the patients.

This is a good story with appropriate atmosphere, but it attempts too much in 48 pages. We are expected to come to know this Elseworlds variations on so many characters -- also including Two-Face, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Scarface and the Ventriloquist, Dick Grayson, Commissioner Gordon and Alfred -- in such a limited span that the story itself never achieves much depth. Basically, Grant sets up the situation, allows a brief plot to develop with a few fisticuffs and gimmicks, and then it's over.

Titans Scissors Paper Stone

An alien threat is attacking the planet, and a sorceress takes it upon herself to recruit allies in the coming battle. She approaches three others and assembles an unlikely band of heroes. The story begins with the invasion and ends with the repulsion of the enemy. All throughout, flashbacks are taking place and telling the background of the characters, much like the original story. However, the pacing and references to anime (as well as to a seemingly endless supply of references to the artist's other interests) make it uniquely Warren-esque.
