To be competitive, service providers cannot customize every installation but must simultaneously offer services that meet a wide range of perceived customer needs. This guide shows commercial service providers and equipment vendors how to build competitive service offerings for enterprise-specific needs.

In general, the book is organized into three main parts. Chapters 1 through 5 deal with defining customer requirements and the abstract provider architecture. Chapters 6 through 8 deal with building and extending carrier facilities and transmission systems. Chapters 9 through 13 deal with the intelligent communications systems overlaid onto the physical structures, which to varying extents involve Internet Protocol (IP)–based control planes, and possibly IP forwarding.

This book focuses on the service provider network, and ideally will be read in concern with the more customer-oriented WAN Survival Guide. It is not aimed at protocol implementers, although it does present alternatives between techniques in development. If a reader finishes the book and is disappointed that he or she did not become utterly familiar with bit-level techniques, I have succeeded in my goals! There are many excellent sources for dealing with protocol mechanics, but a shortage of sources for pinning down problems and selecting solutions.

Welcome to Alan Simpson’s Windows Vista Bible, a really big book about a really big operating system. Microsoft Windows has been around for nearly a couple of decades now. During that time, we’ve seen many versions. Sometimes the change from one version to another was minor. At other times, the change was more drastic.

Windows Vista is definitely one of the more drastic changes. Not so much on the outside. Virtually anything you already know about Windows still applies. The basic terminology is the same. The basic skills are the same. Most of the really big changes are in areas you don’t see.

Windows Vista was designed and built with security as a key component from the ground up. It’s a very forward-looking operating system, designed to take advantage of today’s powerful hardware, and the ever more powerful hardware coming to us at the fastest pace ever.

Being secure and being future-oriented are definitely good things. The only downside is that the transition to Vista is likely to be a bit more painful than the transitions we’ve gone through in the past. Some old hardware may not work until you get Vista drivers. Some old programs won’t work unless you upgrade to a version specifically designed for Vista. Not fun.

But every now and then you just need to give the current trend a kick in the pants to move things in a better direction. And Vista certainly does that. In the not-too-distant future, when computing is better, cheaper, faster, safer, and easier for everyone, I think people will look back on Windows Vista as a key turning point in making things play out that way. Simply stated, it’s just a better way to do things.

"Who is Action Plan for IELTS for?

Action Plan for IELTS is a short, self-study guide for IELTS, containing one complete practice test. It is designed for students with a limited amount of time to prepare for the IELTS test or for students who have already completed an IELTS course and would like a last-minute guide to the test.

It is for students at intermediate level or above, and is designed for self-study, although it may also be used in class as part of a short preparation course. It shows students what skills are tested in IELTS, what type of questions and tasks they will see, and how to approach them.

There are two editions: one for the Academic module and one for the General Training module. Students should use the appropriate edition for their needs.

How is Action Plan for IELTS organised?

Action Plan for IELTS is organised by module: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These are presented in the same order as the actual test. Each of the four modules begins with a clear introduction, which gives full details of what to expect in that part of the test and what is tested. There is also an overview of the different question types for Listening and Reading, and an explanation of the marking criteria for Writing and Speaking.

Each part of each module gives examples of the Listening and Reading question types, and the Writing and Speaking tasks. The Writing section of the book is organised according to the marking criteria for this module. The criteria are illustrated with short exercises, so students can see exactly what the examiner is looking for and decide how best to approach these parts of the test. The Speaking section of the book provides a step-by-step guide to the three parts of the Speaking test.

The question types and tasks are accompanied by a short, effective Action Plan, which gives advice on ways to approach them, and suggests strategies to prepare students for the test. The Key includes answers to all the exercises, sample answers to the Writing tasks and, where appropriate, offers tips and strategies that can be used to help get the right answers. An Audio CD/Cassette accompanies all listening tasks, and the Recording Scripts are also provided.

At the end of the book, there is a complete IELTS Practice Test.

How can Action Plan for IELTS be used?

Action Plan for IELTS is flexible, and can be used in different ways:

• Students who don't know very much about the test and need a thorough overview should work systematically through the book, and then do the timed Practice Test at the end.

• Students who need more practice in one particular module may prefer to work through the book by doing all the Listening sections first, for example, followed by the Listening sections of the Practice Test, and so on.

• Students who are unsure about particular question types or tasks for the Listening and Reading sections can use the overview with the page references in the introduction for each skill and go directly to that section."
