Want your web site to display more quickly? This book presents 14 specific rules that will cut 25% to 50% off response time when users request a page. Author Steve Souders, in his job as Chief Performance Yahoo!, collected these best practices while optimizing some of the most-visited pages on the Web. Even sites that had already been highly optimized, such as Yahoo! Search and the Yahoo! Front Page, were able to benefit from these surprisingly simple performance guidelines.
The rules in High Performance Web Sites explain how you can optimize the performance of the Ajax, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, and images that you’ve already built into your site  adjustments that are critical for any rich web application. Other sources of information pay a lot of attention to tuning web servers, databases, and hardware, but the bulk of display time is taken up on the browser side and by the communication between server and browser. High Performance Web Sites covers every aspect of that process.
Each performance rule is supported by specific examples, and code snippets are available on the book’s companion web site. The rules include how to:
Make Fewer HTTP Requests
Use a Content Delivery Network
Add an Expires Header
Gzip Components
Put Stylesheets at the Top
Put Scripts at the Bottom
Avoid CSS Expressions
Make JavaScript and CSS External
Reduce DNS Lookups
Minify JavaScript
Avoid Redirects
Remove Duplicates Scripts
Configure ETags
Make Ajax Cacheable
If you’re building pages for high traffic destinations and want to optimize the experience of users visiting your site, this book is indispensable.
“If everyone would implement just 20% of Steve’s guidelines, the Web would be a dramatically better place. Between this book and Steve’s YSlow extension, there’s really no excuse for having a sluggish web site anymore.â€Â
-Joe Hewitt, Developer of Firebug debugger and Mozilla’s DOM Inspector
“Steve Souders has done a fantastic job of distilling a massive, semi-arcane art down to a set of concise, actionable, pragmatic engineering steps that will change the world of web performance.â€Â
-Eric Lawrence, Developer of the Fiddler Web Debugger, Microsoft Corporation

Beginning Rails is the practical starting point for anyone wanting to learn how to build dynamic web applications using the Rails framework for Ruby. You’ll learn how all of the components of Rails fit together and how you can leverage them to create sophisticated web applications with less code and more joy.
This book is particularly well suited to those with little or no experience with web application development, or who have some experience but are new to Rails. Beginning Rails assumes basic familiarity with web terms and technologies, but doesn’t require you to be an expert.
Topics include:
A gentle introduction to the Ruby programming language
Installing Ruby and Rails on a Mac, Linux, or Windows system
The philosophy behind Rails and why it matters
The Model-View-Controller architecture
The basics of relational databases and SQL
Setting up a MySQL database and creating a schema with migrations
Experimenting with your live application in the Rails console
Creating rich relationships between your models
Using controllers and templates properly
Leveraging helpers to keep your templates clean and logic free
Adding Ajax and visual effects to enrich your user interfaces
JavaScript with Prototype and script.aculo.us
How to send and receive mail from your application
Using and creating your own plug-ins
Ensuring your code against Murphy’s Law through writing tests
Using Capistrano to deploy your application
Rather than delving into the arcane details of Rails, the focus is on the aspects of the framework that will become your pick, shovel, and axe. Part history lesson, part introduction to object-oriented programming, and part dissertation on open source software, Beginning Rails doesn’t just explain how to do something in Rails, it explains why.
Every programmer fondly remembers the book that helped them get started. The goal of Beginning Rails is to become that book for you, today.

Unless you are working at a very advanced level, this is the only SQL book you will ever need. The authors have taken the mystery out of complex queries and explained principles and techniques with such clarity that a “Mere Mortal will indeed be empowered to perform the superhuman. Do not walk past this book!
–Graham Mandeno, Database Consultant
SQL Queries for Mere Mortals provides a step-by-step, easy-to-read introduction to writing SQL queries. It includes hundreds of examples with detailed explanations. This book provides the tools you need to understand, modify, and create SQL queries
–Keith W. Hare, Convenor, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 WG3–the International SQL Standards Committee
I learned SQL primarily from the first edition of this book, and I am pleased to see a second edition of this book so that others can continue to benefit from its organized presentation of the language. Starting from how to design your tables so that SQL can be effective (a common problem for database beginners), and then continuing through the various aspects of SQL construction and capabilities, the reader can become a moderate expert upon completing the book and its samples. Learning how to convert a question in English into a meaningful SQL statement will greatly facilitate your mastery of the language. Numerous examples from real life will help you visualize how to use SQL to answer the questions about the data in your database. Just one of the “watch out for this trap items will save you more than the cost of the book when you avoid that problem when writing your queries. I highly recommend this book if you want to tap the full potential of your database.
–Kenneth D. Snell, Ph.D., Database Designer/Programmer
I don’t think they do this in public schools any more, and it is a shame, but do you remember in the seventh and eighth grades when you learned to diagram a sentence? Those of you who do may no longer remember how you did it, but all of you do write better sentences because of it. John Viescas and Mike Hernandez must have remembered because they take everyday English queries and literally translate them into SQL. This is an important book for all database designers. It takes the complexity of mathematical Set Theory and of First Order Predicate Logic, as outlined in E. F. Codd’s original treatise on relational database design, and makes it easy for anyone to understand. If you want an elementary- through intermediate-level course on SQL, this is the one book that is a requirement, no matter how many others you buy.
–Arvin Meyer, MCP, MVP
Even in this day of wizards and code generators, successful database developers still require a sound knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL, the standard language for communicating with most database systems). In this book, John and Mike do a marvelous job of making what’s usually a dry and difficult subject come alive, presenting the material with humor in a logical manner, with plenty of relevant examples. I would say that this book should feature prominently in the collection on the bookshelf of all serious developers, except that I’m sure it’ll get so much use that it won’t spend much time on the shelf!
– Doug Steele, Microsoft Access Developer and author
Over the last several decades, SQL has evolved from a language known only to computer specialists to a widely used international standard of the computer industry. The number of new applications deployed each year using SQL now totals in the millions. If you are accessing corporate information from the Internet or from an internal network, you are probably using SQL. This new edition of SQL Queries for Mere Mortals helps new users learn the foundations of SQL queries, and is an essential reference guide for intermediate and advanced users.
The accompanying CD contains five sample databases used for the example queries throughout the book in four different formats: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and later, Microsoft Access 2000 and later, MySQL version 5.0 and later, and SQL scripts that can be used with most other implementations of the language.

National Research Council, «Putting Biotechnology to Work: Bioprocess Engineering»
ISBN: 0309047854 | Publisher: National Academies Press | 1992-11 | 132 Pages | PDF | 1,6 Mb
Biotechnology is broadly defined in a 1991 Office of Technology Assessment report as "any technique that uses living organisms (or parts of organisms) to make or modify products, to improve plants or animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses." This technology has been instrumental in the development and implementation of processes for the manufacture of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals, industrial sugars, alcohols, amino acids and other organic acids, foods, and specialty products through the application of microbiology, fermentation, enzymes, and separation technology. Engineers, working with life scientists, often achieved scale-up to industrial production in remarkably short periods. A relatively small number helped to catalyze, over a period of 50 years, the growth of the pharmaceutical, food, agricultural-processing, and specialty-product sectors of the U.S. economy to the point where sales now exceed $100 billion/year.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT:
There is a significant need for a comprehensive book addressing the operational and day-to-day security management requirements. IM, used in enterprise networks can easily be reconfigured and allow for potentially nonstop exposure; they require the level of security be scrutinized carefully. This includes inherent security flaws in various network architectures that result in additional risks to otherwise secure converged networks. A few books cover components of the architecture, design, theory, issues, challenges, and recommended policies for IM security, but none of them address IM issues in a manner that is useful for the day-to-day operations and management of enterprise networks. IM Security is intended to bridge this gap.
UNIQUE FEATURE/RATIONALE
There are no current books that cover components of the architecture, design, theory, issues, challenges, and recommended policies for IM security. No book we know of addresses IM security in a manner useful for day-to-day operations and management of IM-capable networks in todays corporate environment.

The Microchip PIC family of microcontrollers is the most popular series of microcontrollers in the world. However, no microcontroller is of any use without software to make it perform useful functions. This comprehensive reference focuses on designing with Microchips mid-range PIC line using MBASIC, a powerful but easy to learn programming language. It illustrates MBASICs abilities through a series of design examples, beginning with simple PIC-based projects and proceeding through more advanced designs. Unlike other references however, it also covers essential hardware and software design fundamentals of the PIC microcontroller series, including programming in assembly language when needed to supplement the capabilities of MBASIC. Details of hardware/software interfacing to the PIC are also provided.
BENEFIT TO THE READER: This book provides one of the most thorough introductions available to the worlds most popular microcontroller, with numerous hardware and software working design examples which engineers, students and hobbyists can directly apply to their design work and studies. Using MBASIC, it is possible to develop working programs for the PIC in a much shorter time frame than when using assembly language.

The book introduces a hot topic of novel and emerging computing paradigms and architectures -computation by travelling waves in reaction-diffusion media. A reaction-diffusion computer is a massively parallel computing device, where the micro-volumes of the chemical medium act as elementary few-bit processors, and chemical species diffuse and react in parallel. In the reaction-diffusion computer both the data and the results of the computation are encoded as concentration profiles of the reagents, or local disturbances of concentrations, whilst the computation per se is performed via the spreading and interaction of waves caused by the local disturbances. The monograph brings together results of a decade-long study into designing experimental and simulated prototypes of reaction-diffusion computing devices for image processing, path planning, robot navigation, computational geometry, logics and artificial intelligence. The book is unique because it gives a comprehensive presentation of the theoretical and experimental foundations, and cutting-edge computation techniques, chemical laboratory experimental setups and hardware implementation technology employed in the development of novel nature-inspired computing devices.
Key Features:
- Non-classical and fresh approach to theory of computation.
- In depth exploration of novel and emerging paradigms of nature-inspired computing.

Aimed at the working test manager or test engineer, the second edition of William Perry’s Effective Methods for Software Testing is one of the most rigorous guides to software testing available. This book provides the latest in standards for measuring how good your organization’s commitment to software testing is and many ways to improve it. In all, with its numerous lists and practical step-by-step guide to testing, this book points the way toward more economical and effective software testing.
This book’s major strength is its meticulous 11-step guide to all aspects of today’s software testing process–from initial analysis and test planning to testing software installation and looking at ways to improve the testing cycle the next time around. The book is filled with to-do lists that enumerate the resources and tasks required for each step with helpful hints for what to do, how to work with management, and how to staff and execute a test plan from start to finish. (There is a chapter devoted to each of the 11 steps.) The text also incorporates the latest in testing standards from the Quality Assurance Institute (QAI), and the author does a good job of integrating testing with today’s iterative software methodologies. Another standout here is a look at software tools and how they can simplify the testing process.
Of course, few software shops will be as rigorous in real life with the testing process outlined in this book, but there’s little doubt that this exhaustive guide sets a high standard that test engineers can aim for. Written in a somewhat formal–yet clear–style, this book can certainly benefit any software testing engineer or manager. –Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Software testing process fundamentals, Quality Assurance Institute (QAI) test quality assessment, software defects, Kiviatt charts, testing economics, methodologies and costs, test plans, risk analysis, structural and functional testing, dynamic and static testing, manual and automated testing, testing tools, stress testing, compliance testing, security testing, requirements testing, regression testing, 11-step software testing process, testing client/server, and Web-based systems.

Praise for Core Python Programming
“The long-awaited second edition of Wesley Chun’s Core Python Programming proves to be well worth the waitâ€â€its deep and broad coverage and useful exercises will help readers learn and practice good Python.â€?
â€â€Alex Martelli, author of Python in a Nutshell and editor of Python Cookbook
“There has been lot of good buzz around Wesley Chun’s Core Python Programming. It turns out that all the buzz is well earned. I think this is the best book currently available for learning Python. I would recommend Chun’s book over Learning Python (O’Reilly), Programming Python (O’Reilly), or The Quick Python Book (Manning).
â€â€David Mertz, Ph.D., IBM DeveloperWorks®
“I have been doing a lot of research [on] Python for the past year and have seen a number of positive reviews of your book. The sentiment expressed confirms the opinion that Core Python Programming is now considered the standard introductory text.
â€â€Richard Ozaki, Lockheed Martin
“Finally, a book good enough to be both a textbook and a reference on the Python language now exists.
â€â€Michael Baxter, Linux Journal
“Very well written. It is the clearest, friendliest book I have come across yet for explaining Python, and putting it in a wider context. It does not presume a large amount of other experience. It does go into some important Python topics carefully and in depth. Unlike too many beginner books, it never condescends or tortures the reader with childish hide-and-seek prose games. [It] sticks to gaining a solid grasp of Python syntax and structure.
â€â€http://python.org bookstore Web site
“[If ] I could only own one Python book, it would be Core Python Programming by Wesley Chun. This book manages to cover more topics in more depth than Learning Python but includes it all in one book that also more than adequately covers the core language. [If] you are in the market for just one book about Python, I recommend this book. You will enjoy reading it, including its wry programmer’s wit. More importantly, you will learn Python. Even more importantly, you will find it invaluable in helping you in your day-to-day Python programming life. Well done, Mr. Chun!
â€â€Ron Stephens, Python Learning Foundation
“I think the best language for beginners is Python, without a doubt. My favorite book is Core Python Programming.
â€â€s003apr, MP3Car.com Forums
“Personally, I really like Python. It’s simple to learn, completely intuitive, amazingly flexible, and pretty darned fast. Python has only just started to claim mindshare in the Windows world, but look for it to start gaining lots of support as people discover it. To learn Python, I’d start with Core Python Programming by Wesley Chun.
â€â€Bill Boswell, MCSE, Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine Online
“If you learn well from books, I suggest Core Python Programming. It is by far the best I’ve found. I’m a Python newbie as well and in three months time I’ve been able to implement Python in projects at work (automating MSOffice, SQL DB stuff, etc.).
â€â€ptonman, Dev Shed Forums
“Python is simply a beautiful language. It’s easy to learn, it’s cross-platform, and it works. It has achieved many of the technical goals that Java strives for. A one-sentence description of Python would be: ‘All other languages appear to have evolved over time–but Python was designed.’ And it was designed well. Unfortunately, there aren’t a large number of books for Python. The best one I’ve run across so far is Core Python Programming.
â€â€Chris Timmons, C. R. Timmons Consulting
“If you like the Prentice Hall Core series, another good full-blown treatment to consider would be Core Python Programming. It addresses in elaborate concrete detail many practical topics that get little, if any, coverage in other books.
â€â€Mitchell L Model, MLM Consulting
“Core Python Programming is an amazingly easy read! The liberal use of examples helps clarify some of the more subtle points of the language. And the comparisons to languages with which I’m already familiar (C/C++/Java) get you programming in record speed.
â€â€Michael Santos, Ph.D., Green Hills Software

Pro Active Record helps you take advantage of the full power of your database engine from within your Ruby programs and Rails applications. ActiveRecord, part of the magic that makes the Rails framework so powerful and easy to use, is the model element of Rail’s model/view/controller framework. It’s an object-relational mapping library enabling you to interact with databases from both Ruby and Rails applications.
Because ActiveRecord is configured with default assumptions that mesh perfectly with the Rails framework, Rails developers often find they hardly need think about it at all. However, if you are developing in Ruby without Rails, or are deploying against legacy databases designed without Rails in mind, or you just want to take advantage of database-specific features such as large objects and stored procedures, you need the in-depth knowledge of ActiveRecord found in this book.
In Pro Active Record, authors Kevin Marshall, Chad Pytel, and Jon Yurek walk you through every step from the basics of getting and installing the ActiveRecord library to working with legacy schema to using features specific to each of today’s most popular database engines, including Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, and more! You’ll come to a deep understanding of ActiveRecord that will enable you to truly exploit all that Ruby, Rails, and your chosen database platform have to offer.

Description: A thorough yet concise account of cancer biology, this book emphasizes the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the transformation of normal into malignant cells, the invasiveness of cancer cells into host tissues, and the metastatic spread of cancer cells in the host organism. It also defines the fundamental pathophysiological changes that occur in tumor tissue and in the host animal or patient. The approach throughout the book is to discuss the historical development of a field, citing the key experimental advances to the present day, and to evaluate the current evidence that best supports or rules out concepts of the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating cancer cell behavior. For all the areas of fundamental cancer research, an effort has been made to relate basic research findings to the clinical disease states. The book is well illustrated with schematic diagrams and actual research data to demonstrate points made in the text, and there is an extensive, up-to-date bibliography. In this revision, Dr. Ruddon has organized his text to provide more integrated discussion of the many topics covered in the third edition. At the same time, he has included much new material on molecular genetics and genetic diagnosis (e.g., DNA microarrays to mark tumors), RNA interference, stem cells, cell cycle regulation, angiogenesis, etc.

Description: This book presents a fresh, original exposition of the foundations of classical electrodynamics in the tradition of the so-called metric-free approach. The fundamental structure of classical electrodynamics is described in the form of six axioms: (1) electric charge conservation, (2) existence of the Lorentz force, (3) magnetic flux conservation, (4) localization of electromagnetic energy-momentum, (5) existence of an electromagnetic spacetime relation, and (6) splitting of the electric current into material and external pieces. The first four axioms require an arbitrary 4-dimensional differentiable manifold. The fifth axiom characterizes spacetime as the environment in which the electromagnetic field propagates  a research topic of considerable interest  and in which the metric tensor of spacetime makes its appearance, thus coupling electromagnetism and gravitation. Repeated emphasis is placed on interweaving the mathematical definitions of physical notions and the actual physical measurement procedures. The tool for formulating the theory is the calculus of exterior differential forms, which is explained in sufficient detail, along with the corresponding computer algebra programs. Prerequisites for the reader include a knowledge of elementary electrodynamics (with Maxwell’s equations), linear algebra and elementary vector analysis; some knowledge of differential geometry would help. Foundations of Classical Electrodynamics unfolds systematically at a level suitable for graduate students and researchers in mathematics, physics, and electrical engineering.

Learn from a master how to overcome performance bottlenecks and response time delays typical of large distributed systems.
"Chris is one of the industry's most important thinkers on database design - I would strongly recommend this book to readers trying to get past the buzzwords and focus on what really makes a difference in achieving high-performance distributed systems."
- David Stodder, Editor-in-Chief, Database Programming & Design Performance is not simply a matter of tuning the code or the computing environment - it starts with designing performance into the application from the outset, and spans all phases of the system life cycle. Drawing on his 25 years of experience, Chris Loosley explains the principles of software performance engineering and applies them to all facets of distributed systems architecture and design. Along the way, he summarizes his conclusions in over 250 useful, easily referenced guidelines. And he covers all the key topics, with chapters on Middleware, Architecture, Design, Tools, Databases, Replication, Warehousing, and Transaction Monitors.
Loosley's conclusions about the architecture and design of enterprise systems challenge many current middleware trends. Applying the performance principles, Loosley explains why the key to creating truly scalable distributed systems is to decompose complex business applications into multitransaction workflows, and to use asynchronous data replication, parallel processing, and batching techniques.

K.D. Moeller , "Optics: Learning by Computing, with Examples Using Maple, MathCad®, Matlab®, Mathematica®, and Maple®"
Springer; 2nd ed. edition (August 8, 2007) | ISBN: 0387261680 | 454 pages | PDF | 10 Mb
This new edition is intended for a one semester course in optics for juniors and seniors in science and engineering. It uses scripts from Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, and MATLAB to provide a simulated laboratory where students can learn by exploration and discovery instead of passive absorption.
The text covers all the standard topics of a traditional optics course, including: geometrical optics and aberration, interference and diffraction, coherence, Maxwell's equations, wave guides and propagating modes, blackbody radiation, atomic emission and lasers, optical properties of materials, Fourier transforms and FT spectroscopy, image formation, and holography. It contains step by step derivations of all basic formulas in geometrical, wave and Fourier optics.
The basic text is supplemented by over 170 files in Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, and MATLAB (many of which are in the text; al scripts are included on the CD), each suggesting programs to solve a particular problem, and each linked to a topic in or application of optics. The computer files are dynamic, allowing the reader to see instantly the effects of changing parameters in the equations. Students are thus encouraged to ask "What if?" questions to asses the physical implications of the formulas. The discussion of Fourier transforms in particular is enhanced by the availability of numerical methods.
The book is written for the study of particular projects but can easily be adapted to other situations. The threefold arrangement of text, applications, and files makes the book suitable for "self-learning" by scientists or engineers who would like to refresh their knowledge of optics. In the classroom, the Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, and MATLAB scripts can serve as starting points for homework; outside, they can help find solutions to complex problems in engineering applications.
Some praise for the previous edition:
OPTICS AND PHOTONICS NEWS [OCTOBER 2004]
"This book and its companion CD cover geometrical optics, electromagnetic theory, interference, diffraction and coherence theory. Chapters on optical constants, blackbody radiation, emission and absorption, lasers, holography and Fourier transform spectroscopy broaden its scope. The packet contains over 170 MathCAD files linked to specific topics and applications. [T]he main virtues of the book are the excellent photographs of basic optical phenomena. The index is comprehensive. [The book] will certainly be helpful to students in an introductory optics course."

Execution The Discipline of Getting Things Done:
Disciplines like strategy, leadership development, and innovation are the sexier aspects of being at the helm of a successful business; actually getting things done never seems quite as glamorous. But as Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan demonstrate in Execution, the ultimate difference between a company and its competitor is, in fact, the ability to execute. Execution is "the missing link between aspirations and results," and as such, making it happen is the business leader's most important job. While failure in today's business environment is often attributed to other causes, Bossidy and Charan argue that the biggest obstacle to success is the absence of execution. They point out that without execution, breakthrough thinking on managing change breaks down, and they emphasize the fact that execution is a discipline to learn, not merely the tactical side of business. Supporting this with stories of the "execution difference" being won (EDS) and lost (Xerox and Lucent), the authors describe the building blocks - leaders with the right behaviors, a culture that rewards execution, and a reliable system for having the right people in the right jobs - that need to be in place to manage the three core business processes of people, strategy, and operations. Both Bossidy, CEO of Honeywell International, Inc., and Charan, advisor to corporate executives and author of such books as What the CEO Wants You to Know and Boards That Work, present experience-tested insight into how the smooth linking of these three processes can differentiate one company from the rest. Developing the discipline of execution isn't made out to be simple, nor is this book a quick, easy read. Bossidy and Charan do, however, offer good advice on a neglected topic, making Execution a smart business leader's guide to enacting success rather than permitting demise.

Go It Alone! The Secret to Building a Successful Business on Your Own:
his engaging, if optimistic, primer insists that you don’t need much capital, or much risk-taking, to start a business. Indeed, according to Yale School of Management professor Judson, author of Netmarketing and himself the founder of several allegedly successful small firms, the time has never been better for start ups. With the Internet now offering every business service under the sun through online companies, solo entrepreneurs can  and must  outsource almost every aspect of their business and concentrate on leveraging their "unique skills". Judson lays out a number of useful rules of thumb (chief among them - don’t give up your day job until your business is profitable) illustrated by case studies of successful businesses, from which readers can glean enlightening tips on marketing, fee structures and customer management. Less helpful are his recommendations for figuring out what an entrepreneur’s unique skills actually are, as he relies on fuzzy introspective koans like "Find Your Source of Personal Energy". Interspersed is much motivational material on taking the first step, finding a way around obstacles, following your passion and facing down your fear. The book is not a step-by-step how-to, and its assurance that readers can beat the daunting odds against small business start-up success by avoiding typical mistakes is rather rose-colored, but those determined to take the plunge will find a good deal of easily digestible food for thought.

Essential Business Process Modeling:
Ten years ago, groupware bundled with email and calendar applications helped track the flow of work from person to person within an organization. Workflow in today's enterprise means more monitoring and orchestrating massive systems. A new technology called Business Process Management, or BPM, helps software architects and developers design, code, run, administer, and monitor complex network-based business processes BPM replaces those sketchy flowchart diagrams that business analysts draw on whiteboards with a precise model that uses standard graphical and XML representations, and an architecture that allows it converse with other services, systems, and users.Sound complicated? It is. But it's downright frustrating when you have to search the Web for every little piece of information vital to the process. Essential Business Process Modeling gathers all the concepts, design, architecture, and standard specifications of BPM into one concise book, and offers hands-on examples that illustrate BPM's approach to process notation, execution, administration and monitoring.

The New Avenues in Bioinformatics (Cellular Origin, Life in Extreme Habitats and Astrobiology)
Springer | ISBN:1402026390 | Edition - 2005-04-29 | PDF | 281 pages | 2.5 MB | Rapidshare
Bioinformatics has ignited the imagination of scientists, entrepreneurs and the general public. At the meeting place of two fast growth disciplines, biology and computer science Bioinformatics is one of the cornerstones of the new biology. It is clearly pivotal to the translation of high throughput projects such the human genome project into useful knowledge. Yet despite all this attention, there is no consensus on what exactly is Bioinformatics. There are several canonical topics, such as gene structure prediction, protein functional classification or structure prediction. The present book explores new frontiers in bioinformatics, such as Glycomics or the computational modeling of genetic processes. We also discuss confounding factors that we find crucial to the development of the field, such as the ability to protect and restrict intellectual property in the field, or the challenges involved in educating bioinformatics users. Finally, we touch upon some fundamental questions, such as what information is and how it is captured in biological systems. By bringing to the readers such a broad spectrum of reviews, we hope to capture the vibrant spirit of this young science and to truly represent the fast pace with which it is still developing.

The Biology of Dendritic Cells and HIV Infection
Springer | ISBN:081604810X | Edition - 2007-02-02 | PDF | 550 pages | 8.2 MB | Rapidshare
Dendritic cells play the most vital part in inducing anti-viral immune responses in HIV and AIDS among many other viruses. Research on dendritic cells (DCs) is emerging as a fundamental aspect for the comprehension of the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of viral diseases as well as for the progress on the development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines.
This volume focuses on the role of DCs in the pathogenesis and immunity of HIV-1 infection. It has recently been clarified that DCs are important targets and reservoirs of HIV and may play an important role in virus spreading to T cells. Interestingly, HIV can exploit many of the cellular processes responsible for the generation and regulation of the adaptive immune responses to gain access to its main target cells, i.e. the CD4+ T lymphocytes. Thus, the central role of DCs in stimulating T cell activation not only provides a route for viral transmission, but also represents a vulnerable point at which HIV-1 can interfere with the initiation of primary T cell immunity.
Recent studies have revealed that several HIV proteins can profoundly influence the phenotype and functions of DCs even in the absence of a productive infection, often resulting in an abnormal immune response. While this knowledge has resulted in the identification of some major mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection, the recent progress on DC biology has opened perspectives in the research on new adjuvants (selectively acting on DCs) and on novel strategies for the in vivo targeting of antigens to DCs, which appear to be highly relevant for the development of HIV vaccines. Of note, defects in the number and functions of DCs have been observed in the course of HIV infection and during disease progression, thus suggesting that DCs play an important role in the immune control of viral replication and virus-induced dysfunctions. The development of therapeutic vaccination strategies to be combined with HAART is thought as an important step for an effective control of HIV infection in patients. In this context, the use of autologous DCs may represent an attracting strategy. Notably, DCs are now regarded as a valuable approach for the development of cancer vaccines and several clinical trials have explored the efficacy of different DC preparations as cellular adjuvants in inducing a potentially protective immune response. Recent data in animal models provide the background for the clinical testing of DC-based vaccines in HIV-1-infected patients. Now that we start to understand the complex interactions between HIV and DCs in the pathogenesis of AIDS and we are learning how to prepare potentially effective DCs from lessons on cancer vaccines, we may reasonably assume that DC-based therapeutic vaccines can represent a topic of increasing interest in protocols of clinical immunotherapy of HIV-1-infected patients.

Michel Barbeau, Evangelos Kranakis, “Principles of Ad-hoc Networking
Wiley (June 11, 2007) | ISBN:0470032901 | 274 pages | PDF | 1,3 Mb
Principles of Ad Hoc Networking presents a systematic introduction to the fundamentals of ad hoc networks.
An ad-hoc network is a small network, especially one with wireless or temporary plug-in connections. Typically, some of the network devices are part of the network only for the duration of a communications session or, in the case of mobile or portable devices, while in some close proximity to the rest of the network. These networks can range from small and static systems with constrained power resources to larger-scale dynamic and mobile environments. Wireless ad hoc networks facilitate numerous and diverse applications for establishing survivable dynamic systems in emergency and rescue operations, disaster relief and intelligent home settings.
Principles of Ad Hoc Networking:

Brian Kettell, “Economics for Financial Markets (Quantitative Finance)
Butterworth-Heinemann | ISBN:0750653841 | 384 pages | 2 Mb
Successful trading, speculating or simply making informed decisions about financial markets means it is essential to have a firm grasp of economics. Financial market behaviour revolves around economic concepts, however the majority of economic textbooks do not tell the full story.
To fully understand the behaviour of financial markets it is essential to have a model that enables new information to be absorbed and analysed with some predictive implications. That model is provided by the business cycle.
‘Economics for Financial Markets’ takes the reader from the basics of financial market valuation to a more sophisticated understanding of the actions that traders take which ultimately drives the volatility in the financial markets.
The author shows traders, investment managers, risk managers and finance professionals how to distil the flow of information and show what needs to be concentrated on, covering topics such as:
* Why are financial markets subject to economic fashions?
* How has the New Economy changed financial market behaviour?
* Does the creation of the euro fundamentally change the behaviour of the currency markets?
Shows how to distil the vast amount of information in financial markets and identify what is important
Demonstrates how the “New Economy had changed financial market behaviour
Explains how to follow the behaviour of central banks

Review
“Vijay Krishna’s book provides a very thorough and patient presentation of auction theory, starting from the most basic analysis and graduating to sophisticated, state of the art theory, including multi-unit auctions. This book covers a very wide range of auction topics, providing a clear and accessible treatment. The theory is presented in a careful and easily understood style accessible to honors undergraduates as well as all economics graduate students. Krishna’s book will certainly become the central book on auction theory.
–R. Preston McAfee, Murray S. Johnson Chair in Economics, University of Texas
“This book not only sets out much of the theoretical literature on auctions–including results that are very recent–but does so with a clarity, elegance, and rigor that is characteristic of Vijay Krishna’s work.
–Eric Maskin, A.O. Hirschman Professor of Social Science, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A.
“The book gives a superb presentation of auction theory, with clear and concise proofs of all results. It is essential reading for any serious student of auctions.
–Peter Cramton, Professor of Economics, University of Maryland
“This is the book we have been waiting for: a high level treatment of auction theory that carefully presents the technical details necessary for an in depth understanding of the main themes of auction theory, ideal as a basis for a graduate course, and by an author who has himself made important contributions to the subject.
–Paul Klemperer, Edgeworth Professor of Economics, Nuffield College, University of Oxford, U.K.

RoyE. Johnson, “Shareholder Value: A Business Experience “
Butterworth-Heinemann; 1st edition (October 15, 2001) | ISBN:0750653825 | 488 pages | PDF | 2,9 Mb
Review
“Shareholder Value: A Business Experience is a “must read for CFOs and their financial managers. Roy E. Johnson presents a technical subject using an enjoyable narrative to which any business person can relate. He explores innovative financial principles in a practical way - fostering effective implementation in the real world. The value-based financial performance concepts and approach detailed in this book have been successfully implemented in our company, radically improving the way we manage growth in the business.
Michael A. Patterson, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, DFB Pharmaceuticals.
“Rich with insights for effective implementation of value-based management - specifically, the ongoing issues and discussions that arise and the personal vantage points that must be considered to keep the process “on track. The book sets forth the value-based financial performance framework with succinct formats to facilitate learning while, at the same time, enabling the reader to experience the implementation in a personal way. Having collaborated on client assignments with the author, I can attest to the integrity and realism of the experience and, also, to the line of sight financial “drivers so necessary as a foundation for value-based incentive compensation and corporate communication.
Mark C. Ubelhart, Value-Based Management Practice Leader, Hewitt Associates LLC.
“All MBA students and recent graduates should read this book. It uses some of the modern finance concepts that are now standard in the MBA curriculum. Thats the easy part. Roy Johnsons book will also give you an appreciation of the hard part - how to get people in business to understand and effectively use modern finance concepts. Readers will learn a lot about finance and, more importantly, about changing a firms culture toward a focus on value creation. Observations from an extensive corporate and consulting career breathe life into the characters, making this book an extremely informative and interesting read.

Butterworth-Heinemann; 4 edition (May 7, 1998) | ISBN:0750638494 | 700 pages | PDF | 3,6 Mb
Review
‘It is a superior book in many ways to existing leading textbooks on strategic management. The concern with moving from theory to practice will be very appealing to an increasingly sophisticated management readership.’
Professor Paul Joyce, University of North London
‘It is one of the few books that is both conceptually sound, covering as it does the latest contemporary strategic thinking and developments, plus the appropriate attention to the application and implementation of strategic change, an area so often either ignored or treated superficially. The fourth edition will be essential reading…’
Professor Graham Beaver, MBA Director, Nottingham Business School
‘Comprehensive, well-researched and penetrating.’

The 80 20 Way - Work Less Worry Less Succeed More:
In this new book, Living the 80/20 Way, Richard Koch focuses exclusively on how to succeed personally as well as professionally, to make a good life as well as a living while doing less. The key, he says, is to work out the few things that are really important, and the few methods that will give us what we really want, and to act on them, while ignoring the mass of trivia that normally engulfs our lives. It sounds simple, and it is …but nobody has explained the idea before in such a convincing way, nor based it so persuasively on a proven phenomenon.

This book will offer in-depth explorations of new features so that both experienced programmers and novices will feel comfortable making the transition to .NET. Although a major portion of the book is devoted to Internet applications, the book covers more general topics than many other books. Features of Visual Basic that will be explained include database access, controls, and best coding and practices. These features will be explored in detail, with extensive use of example programs and screen captures. We feel that this book has something to offer for all skill levels. If you have never used Visual Basic before, the initial chapters provide the necessary step-by-step instructions to get you used to the Visual Studio programming environment. Users of previous versions of Visual Basic (experienced or not) will appreciate extensive, detailed coverage of the new features available in VB .NET and explanations of the changes from previous versions. Readers who are new to computer programming in general should note that technical details are sprinkled with “words of wisdom and real-world examples to help you understand new concepts.
Some readers may need a reference to find information about a particular topic quickly. Other readers might want to follow the book in tutorial style by reading each chapter start to finish. Readers of Special Edition Using Visual Basic .NET should be able do either. Each topic is explained in a narrative fashion, with lists, pictures, and sample code to allow the reader to quickly absorb the technical details. For those seeking instant gratification, many chapters include exercises that provide step-by-step instructions to try out a particular topic on your own. Special Edition Using Visual Basic .NET is divided into six parts and a section of appendices.

This book provides the detailed guidance you need to make the right choices as you design and build enterprise-level applications with Visual Basic .NET. The authorâ€â€a former member of the MS Visual Studio® .NET team with extensive experience in designing, testing, and optimizing enterprise applicationsâ€â€discusses the technical and architectural trade-offs you’ll face as you develop large, multitier, multideveloper distributed applications. He also shows how to create a workable enterprise infrastructure, and he reveals inside tips and techniques for implementation, performance tuning, and testing. You’ll find out how to take advantage of key state-of-the-art OOP features in Visual Basic .NET plus platform enhancements in MS .NET to develop serious enterprise applications quickly. Most of what I’ll cover in this book applies to a broad spectrum of applications. Our discussion will focus on development for the enterprise, but you can use the advanced programming techniques and strategies presented here to write better and more sophisticated applications of all kinds in Visual Basic .NET. In addition, much of the techniques, technologies, and development approaches covered here apply equally well to all .NET languages, including C#.
This is not a design patterns book. This book will instead focus on how to use more advanced features of Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Framework to build into your applications common features that have in the past been too difficult to build in. Also, do not think that the purpose of this book is to make you an “enterprise developer. This book provides a set of fundamental skills and technologies in an accessible fashion for the average developer. Think of this book as a stepping-stone to more advanced development topics.
There are two core audiences for this book: the novice Visual Basic .NET programmer and the classically trained Visual Basic developer who, already familiar with the Visual Basic .NET language, wants to see how new platform features can be and should be integrated into applications. Most of the material in this book is intended to be an extension of existing technical resources. If you’re expecting a ground-up introduction to Visual Basic .NET, you’ll be disappointed. I have an expectation that you have a basic familiarity with the language and platform. If you do not, there are plenty of excellent books from MS Press on the subject of Visual Basic .NET and I’d recommend starting there.

Book Description
Biophysics - the science of physical principles of life itself, of biological systems - is presented here not merely as physics for biologists, but as an entirely independent subject with its own innate network of ideas and approaches. From the microscopic forces that constitute life, the intramolecular bonds and ionic interactions, to the macroscopic forces of the environment, temperature and pressure, the author presents and explains all aspects of life from a Biophysicist’s point of view. Exciting biological themes such as neuronal processing and differentiation as well as current medical and environmental topics are introduced from a surprising perspective in this imaginative new textbook.
Book Info
Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin, Germany. Translation of the German title, Biophysik, 5th edition, c1999. Message is that biophysics is the science of physical principles underlying the ‘phenomenon life’ on all levels of organization. Regard physics as a defined discipline with its own network of ideas and approaches. For researchers.

One of the many advantages of free operating systems, as typified by Linux, is that their internals are open for all to view. The operating system, once a dark and mysterious area whose code was restricted to a small number of programmers, can now be readily examined, understood, and modified by anybody with the requisite skills. Linux has helped to democratize operating systems. The Linux kernel remains a large and complex body of code, however, and would-be kernel hackers need an entry point where they can approach the code without being overwhelmed by complexity. Often, device drivers provide that gateway.
Device drivers take on a special role in the Linux kernel. They are distinct black boxes that make a particular piece of hardware respond to a well-defined internal programming interface; they hide completely the details of how the device works. User activities are performed by means of a set of standardized calls that are independent of the specific driver; mapping those calls to device-specific operations that act on real hardware is then the role of the device driver. This programming interface is such that drivers can be built separately from the rest of the kernel and plugged in at runtime when needed. This modularity makes Linux drivers easy to write, to the point that there are now hundreds of them available.
There are a number of reasons to be interested in the writing of Linux device drivers. The rate at which new hardware becomes available (and obsolete!) alone guarantees that driver writers will be busy for the foreseeable future. Individuals may need to know about drivers in order to gain access to a particular device that is of interest to them. Hardware vendors, by making a Linux driver available for their products, can add the large and growing Linux user base to their potential markets. And the open source nature of the Linux system means that if the driver writer wishes, the source to a driver can be quickly disseminated to millions of users.

Health foods and dietary supplements are widely used throughout the world - it is estimated that more than seventy million people in Europe regularly buy these products, and it is a billion dollar business in the USA. Health foods include vitamins, minerals, cereals, nuts, herbal medicines, functional foods, and many others. A large number of people use these foods in the belief that they contribute to their general health, while, in most countries, little or no information is given on products explaining their therapeutic values.

Why is this book called "3D Cheats"? Unlike committed 3D applications (like Maya, 3D Studio Max, Swift 3D), Flash MX doesn’t have an internal 3D engine, and therefore if a designer wants include realistic 3D effects in their Flash designs they must either import from one of these other 3D applications (can be complex, expensive, and time-consuming), or rely on "pseudo-3D" effects – 2D graphics rendered to mimic realistic 3D imagery. This book teaches users how to employ 3D principles without having to learn the official names for everything. Digital 3D is a tricky area – and until the day someone makes 3D TV commercially viable, it’s going to remain a tricky area. What is 3D? Can you genuinely render 3D on a flat screen? Do you have to spend a year’s wages to get a dedicated piece of 3D software? Do you have to conjure up a bunch of complex math techniques to make the grade? Is anyone going to answer these interminable questions? Well, listen: we’re not out to work ourselves into the ground here. We want 3D and we want it fast, and we want to use Flash to get it. In a series of clear and concise demonstrations, this book shows you exactly what can be achieved in Web 3D. Some of the most cunning designers around have put their heads together to present these: the most wanted 3D cheats in Flash.

Inulin-Type Fructans: Functional Food Ingredients (Modern Nutrition)
CRC Press | ISBN: 0849300592 | 2004-10-28 | PDF | 392 pages | 4.23 Mb | RS
Inulin and oligofructose are naturally occurring resistant carbohydrates that have a variety of uses as functional food ingredients. In addition to their role as prebiotics that selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines, these inulin-type fructans act as dietary fiber in the digestive system and have applications as a sugar substitute and fat replacer. Written by one of the leading researchers in the field, Inulin-Type Fructans: Functional Food Ingredients describes inulin-type fructans and explains how they can be analyzed, quantified, and used in a wide variety of food products. The text evaluates the nutritional properties of inulin-type fructans, focusing on their behavior in the upper gastrointestinal tract that have led to their classification as dietary fiber and low calorie carbohydrates. Following a review of the selective and beneficial modification of the intestinal microflora that led to the discovery of prebiotics, the book concentrates on the relationship of inulin and oligofructose to lipid metabolism, carcinogenesis, mineral absorption, and the immune system. The text concludes with a general discussion of the classification of inulin-type fructans as functional food ingredients. Each chapter begins with background information on the physiology and biochemistry of the particular function covered as well as on the methodology used to assess these functions, and concludes with a summary of the results and perspectives on future development. The combination of authoritative research data and insightful perspectives provides a comprehensive overview of this growing field.

The Biochemistry of Cell Signalling
Oxford University Press | 0198508204 | Edition - August 20, 2001 | DJVU | 386 pages | 5 MB
The Biochemistry of Cell Signalling deals in depth with the principles of cell signalling, concentrating on structure and mechanism. It will serve as a reliable map through the maze of cell signalling pathways and help the reader understand how malfunctions in these pathways can lead to disease. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 describes the machinery of signal transduction starting with the properties of signals, receptors (including receptor activation), regulators, and the molecules that link receptor and regulator. The design of signalling cascades is explained by describing central signalling pathways: the Ras-regulated MAPK and PI-3 pathways; the Rho/Rac/Cdc 42 pathway controlling chemotaxis and regulating the cytoskeleton; the G protein coupled receptor cascades in response to sensory and hormonal signals; signalling by TGF-ss in morphogenesis; cytokine signalling that controls haemopoiesis. There is also a discussion of the insulin response. As phosphorylation - dephosphorylation is involved in nearly all cellular regulatory processes, Part 1 concludes with a synopsis of its role in signalling. Part 2 describes the implementation of the signalling cascades focusing on the effect on gene transcription. After a brief description of the transcriptional machinery the regulation of transcription by cytokines and growth factors in the control of cell growth and the mechanisms and sites of control are discussed in detail. The regulators discussed include Jun/Fos, NF-AT, SREBPs, and STATs. The next two chapters cover gene regulation by nuclear receptors, including both the steroid hormone receptors and non-steroid nuclear receptors e.g. the retinoic acid receptors RAR and RXR. Part 3 studies the global cellular regulatory programs for the control of cell growth and proliferation. The first chapter concerns the regulation of the cell cycle and the role of the cyclin-dependent kinases, telomerase, Ran, and cell cycle checkpoints. The next topic is the signalling pathways in apoptosis: the TNF-receptor family death receptors, caspases, and the intracellular apoptosis signals and the role of apoptosis in the lifecycle of cells. Part 3 ends with a discussion of the signal pathways involved in the immune response, focusing on the involvement of cell-cell interactions. Part 4 considers loss of regulatory control and its consequences with respect to the molecular basis of cancer. It first describes the cellular regulatory proteins that have oncogenic potential, how they can become oncogenic and cause the transformation of normal cells to cancerous cells. Next is an analysis of the loss of developmental controls, the APC protein, ss-catenin, and the Wnt pathway, that lead to mature terminally differentiated cells reverting to immature embryonic cells. The book ends with a summary of the molecular and cellular causes of cancer and an outlook for novel therapies. Throughout the text, the emphasis is on structure and mechanism and is well illustrated with 200 figures. The Biochemistry of Cell Signalling will be an invaluable companion to all graduate students studying cell signalling.

"Color Atlas Of Forensic Pathology"Publisher:CRC | Pages:192 | 1999-12-21 | ISBN:0849302781 | PDF | 29.8 MB
This extensive atlas addresses much of the basic information which forensic pathologists and other investigators deal with on a day to day basis. Packed with 800 full-color, captioned photographs, it examines everything from time of death and decomposition, to identification, blunt trauma, sudden natural death, firearm injuries, asphyxia, cutting and stabbing injuries, and more. The atlas shows different causes of death and injury with case examples for investigators who can use 'visuals' to understand the work they perform.
A male homicide victim with a shotgun blast to the chest. A female drug addict who has overdosed on crack cocaine. An elderly woman with deep stab wounds to the neck. A two-year-old motor vehicle accident victim with blunt head trauma. For forensic pathologists, police detectives, and crime scene investigators, dealing with death and injury is a daily routine. But even after investigating thousands of drownings, shootings, stabbings, electrocutions, overdoses, and traffic accidents, most professionals in the investigative fields still haven't seen it all. Originally published on CD-ROM, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology addresses much of the basic information which forensic pathologists and other investigators deal with on a day to day basis. Packed with 780 full-color, captioned photographs, this atlas examines everything from time of death and decomposition, to identification, to causes of death from blunt trauma, firearm injuries, asphyxia, cutting and stabbing injuries, and more. The atlas shows the various causes of death and injury with case -- "visuals" to help investigators understand the work they perform. Indeed, with its exhaustive coverage, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology will provide investigators with valuable insight into the many different causes of death and injury they must deal with and how the manners of death are diagnosed.

Vascular Mechanics and Pathology
Pages: 494 | Date: 2007 | ISBN: 0387338163 | Rared DAA (Power ISO) File | Rapidshare & Depositfiles | 40 MB
The book focuses on the artery and arterial diseases. The most fundamental functions of the artery are (1) to serve as a conduit of blood flow and (2) to serve as a container of blood pressure. The artery carries the blood to all organs of the body and it uses pressure to drive the blood through the tissue to provide nourishment. Hence, the artery is both a pipe and a pressure vessel. The artery pulsates about 103,000 times a day along with the beating heart. In a lifetime, the artery sustains cyclic pressure for about 3.8 billion cycles. This obviously poses a significant challenge to the artery and therefore the artery must be endowed with special structure and properties to meet this challenge. In the event that additional challenges are imposed, such as high blood pressure, it would not be surprising that the artery could "break down" or become diseased. In the book, we examine the structure and properties of the artery and study the challenges imposed on it with a view to understand the survival of and the development of the diseases in the artery.
The book will be useful to cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, pathologists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, anatomists, and manufacturers of medical devices. It will also be useful to students in medicine and in biomedical engineering and to the researchers in various disciplines. It can serve as "the book" for a course on "vascular mechanics and pathology" in bioengineering. It is likely to open new doors for interdisciplinary research, which could lead to the reduction of vascular diseases and to the development of new treatments, thereby benefiting large number of patients.

Super Sexual Orgasms
PerfectBound | Date published: 06/24/2003 | English | ISBN: 0060584513 | 173 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB
Imagine: An explosive vaginal orgasm that doesn’t require a perfect sex partner. An orgasm without exhaustion or convoluted gymnastics. An orgasm that you control. Thanks to Barbara Keesling, Ph.D., this type of sexual fulfillment can now be any woman’s reality.
Dr. Keesling has identified the cul-de-sac  an area of extreme sensitivity in the vaginal canal that enables any woman to have a Super Sexual Orgasm! Normally hidden beneath the uterus and just beyond the cervix, the cul-de-sac is so extraordinarily rich in sensitive nerve endings that the slightest contact can trigger a powerful, consuming, instantaneous orgasm.
To reveal this secret and bring this ultimate sensation into your sex life, Dr. Keesling has devised a series of simple exercises designed to tighten the PC muscle, lift and flatten the uterus, and expose the usually hidden cul-de-sac. These exercises can work for all women  from the highly orgasmic to the silent majority who have been suffering snoregasms. The cul-de-sac will become a woman’s best-loved secret, for it will allow her to have consistent, euphoric orgasms that she can fully control.
Dr. Keesling also includes sensual exercises for women to practice after they have mastered the Super Sexual Orgasm and exercises for couples to practice together, so that women can fully incorporate Super Sexual Orgasm into their lives in a mind-body-spirit approach.

Powerful Lessons in Personal Change was a groundbreaker when it was first published in 1990, and it continues to be a business bestseller with more than 10 million copies sold. Stephen Covey, an internationally respected leadership authority, realizes that true success encompasses a balance of personal and professional effectiveness, so this book is a manual for performing better in both arenas. His anecdotes are as frequently from family situations as from business challenges. Before you can adopt the seven habits, you'll need to accomplish what Covey calls a "paradigm shift"--a change in perception and interpretation of how the world works. Covey takes you through this change, which affects how you perceive and act regarding productivity, time management, positive thinking, developing your "proactive muscles" (acting with initiative rather than reacting), and much more.

Scott Kelby, the best-selling Photoshop author in the world today, once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers the latest, most important and most exciting new Adobe Photoshop CS2 techniques for digital photographers.
This major update to this award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that's never been done before - it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly "how to do it." It's not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step-by-step the exact techniques used by today's cutting-edge digital photographers and, best of all, he shows you, flat-out, exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why. That's why the previous version of this book took the digital photography world by storm.
But now, his new CS2, version is even bigger, even better, and exposes even more of the pros most closely guarded secrets, including a special chapter which shows, for the first time ever, step-by-step how to how to set-up Photoshop's color management. He does it by throwing out all the theory, all the techno-babble, and all the confusing charts and graphs and instead just shows you exactly what you need to do (and nothing more).

Learn to use PowerPoint in ways you never thought possible. Marcovitz shows how, providing practical instruction for using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create learning environments and educational materials that support and enhance student success. With the widespread availability of PowerPoint (every copy beginning with version 1997 comes with VBA built-in) schools have all the tools they need to create powerful and interactive multimedia resources. The true power of multimedia lies in its ability to engage students’ minds. Professional multimedia tools are too difficult to learn, too expensive, or both, and although many teachers and students use HyperStudio or PowerPoint to develop multimedia projects, these projects often lack true interactivity. Using VBA with PowerPoint gives teachers and students an accessible way to easily create interactive multimedia resources and projects. After introducing the basics of educational planning, the design process, and the benefits of designing and using multimedia, this book offers the practical knowledge you need to create powerful educational resources. Learn to create projects that include:
Pictures, videos, recorded voices, and links to Web sites Interactive menus Quizzes and short-answer questions with automatic user-feedback The ability to score quizzes The ability to keep track of which presentation sections have or haven’t been visited The ability to allow the user to type and alter slides during the presentation And much more The possibilities are endless. Anyone with basic PowerPoint skills can use this book to create powerful educational material for themselves, their colleagues, their students, or their own children.Summary: Very good for one specific aspectRating: 4This book is an excellent resource if you want to learn how to use Visual Basic to write interactive quizzes in PowerPoint. It is definitely aimed at educators. There are better books out there for learning PowerPoint, but this book is definitely outstanding in this one area. Summary: The Power of a Programmer (without being one)Rating: 5If you’re like me, experienced with PowerPoint, but not a programmer, then taking a trip into the world of vba scripting with David Marcovitz’s “Powerful PowerPoint for Educators makes it easy and enjoyable. This book is like having a conversation with the author who has “been there and done it in terms of developing script that is practical and useful in so many PowerPoint projects you may need to develop. Among other objectives, I had the need to incorporate an interactive leadership style self-assessment in my cbt of the same name, and thanks to David’s book I was able to let the user make his/her selections (as well as change them too), track scores, and then take those scores on to subsequent slides to discern the meaning of each of them (not to mention printing as well as saving those scores based on user preference). And of course, all along the way, I learned a great deal about other scripting options that proved useful in this application as well as for future projects. If you’re at the stage where you need to use vba scripting, this is the book that should be your primer. It will take you where you need to go!Summary: Improperly TitledRating: 2This book is not really properly titled  it should be “Using Scripting to Make PowerPoint Interactive. The author makes it clear (part way through the book) that he is not writing this for people with programming knowledge  all he intends for you to do is copy the scripts he provides and use them as he intends. He even discourages the reader to read what little is written about programming. In addition, the $45 price tag is ludicrously high. This book is worth $19.95 tops.Summary: Only book on VBA devoted to PowerPointRating: 5Every computer coordinator and interested computer teacher, anyone who does instructional presentations / training, and college level professors who are accustomed to using PowerPoint and those constructing online programs for medical CEU programs, now using such programs as Agility Presenter or Appraiso would benefit from this book. This method of using VBA with PowerPoint truly allows for authentic, interactive, memorable, meaningful, and fun e-learning with a program many trainers already use. Sure you can do this with Flash, but most instructors in other fields than computer technology really don’t have time for that learning curve. Maybe the computer teacher has time, but not the social studies teacher nor the medical professor teaching second year medical students interview techniques, for example. As an instructor it would be great to provide an additional e-learning module on CD that you created with PowerPoint and VBA. It will leave a lasting impression. I have searched many a thousand paged books for dribs and drabs of VBA on PowerPoint. This book immediately gives you useful, real world problems and gets right to the point in about 180+ pages and contains more information than many thousand page books that cost considerably more. The author also provides a Web site with actual samples of the programs that work in case you run into difficulties. I went on a newsgroup site to ask a VBA question about PowerPoint before Amazon sent my book. Normally I receive answers that are completely beyond anything I need or want. It just so happens that the book’s author answered my question and helped me solve my problem and told me about his book, at which point I realized I had recently ordered it. I often rate books, but I rarely write reviews. This one deserves all 5 stars and then add five more! I can’t say enough about it. It is one of a kind.

Multi-core chips from Intel and AMD offer a dramatic boost in speed and responsiveness, and plenty of opportunities for multiprocessing on ordinary desktop computers. But they also present a challenge: More than ever, multithreading is a requirement for good performance. This guide explains how to maximize the benefits of these processors through a portable C++ library that works on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Unix systems. With it, you’ll learn how to use Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) effectively for parallel programming  without having to be a threading expert.
Written by James Reinders, Chief Evangelist of Intel Software Products, and based on the experience of Intel’s developers and customers, this book explains the key tasks in multithreading and how to accomplish them with TBB in a portable and robust manner. With plenty of examples and full reference material, the book lays out common patterns of uses, reveals the gotchas in TBB, and gives important guidelines for choosing among alternatives in order to get the best performance.
You’ll learn how Intel Threading Building Blocks:
Enables you to specify tasks instead of threads for better portability, easier programming, more understandable source code, and better performance and scalability in general
Focuses on the goal of parallelizing computationally intensive work to deliver high-level solutions
Is compatible with other threading packages, and doesn’t force you to pick one package for your entire program
Emphasizes scalable, data-parallel programming, which allows program performance to increase as you add processors
Relies on generic programming, which enables you to write the best possible algorithms with the fewest constraints
Any C++ programmer who wants to write an application to run on a multi-core system will benefit from this book. TBB is also very approachable for a C programmer or a C++ programmer without much experience with templates. Best of all, you don’t need experience with parallel programming or multi-core processors to use this book.

In today’s Web 2.0 world, JavaScript and Dynamic HTML are at the center of the hot new approach to designing highly interactive pages on the client side. With this environment in mind, the new edition of this book offers bite-sized solutions to very specific scripting problems that web developers commonly face. Each recipe includes a focused piece of code that you can insert right into your application.
Why is JavaScript & DHTML Cookbook so popular? After reading thousands of forum threads over the years, author and scripting pioneer Danny Goodman has compiled a list of problems that frequently vex scripters of various experience levels. For every problem he addresses, Goodman not only offers code, but a discussion of how and why the solution works. Recipes range from simple tasks, such as manipulating strings and validating dates in JavaScript, to entire libraries that demonstrate complex tasks, such as cross-browser positioning of HTML elements, sorting tables, and implementing Ajax features on the client.
Ideal for novices as well as experienced scripters, this book contains more than 150 recipes for:
Working with interactive forms and style sheets
Presenting user-friendly page navigation
Creating dynamic content via Document Object Model scripting
Producing visual effects for stationary content
Positioning HTML elements
Working with XML data in the browser
Recipes in this Cookbook are compatible with the latest W3C standards and browsers, including Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Safari, and Opera 9. Several new recipes provide client-side Ajax solutions, and many recipes from the previous edition have been revised to help you build extensible user interfaces for Web 2.0 applications. If you want to write your own scripts and understand how they work, rather than rely on a commercial web development framework, the JavaScript & DHTML Cookbook is a must.

Cognitive networks can dynamically adapt their operational parameters in response to user needs or changing environmental conditions. They can learn from these adaptations and exploit knowledge to make future decisions.
Cognitive networks are the future, and they are needed simply because they enable users to focus on things other than configuring and managing networks. Without cognitive networks, the pervasive computing vision calls for every consumer to be a network technician. The applications of cognitive networks enable the vision of pervasive computing, seamless mobility, ad-hoc networks, and dynamic spectrum allocation, among others.
In detail, the authors describe the main features of cognitive networks clearly indicating that cognitive network design can be applied to any type of network, being fixed or wireless. They explain why cognitive networks promise better protection against security attacks and network intruders and how such networks will benefit the service operator as well as the consumer.
Cognitive Networks
