The first edition set a standard of excellence that has eluded all followers, and I have recommended it to my clients for years. The new edition is a gift to the field and should be required reading for all managers. — Adrian J. Bowles, Ph.D., Vice President, Giga Information Group. One of the most readable introductions you will find. The new edition offers vital insights into the effective use of objects in business. — Chris Stone, President , Object Management Group. The first edition of Object Technology: A Manager's Guide is widely viewed as the classic introduction to this powerful computing concept. Object technology offers increased agility, significant time-to-market reduction, and the opportunity to exploit the potential of the World Wide Web by deploying globally distributed business systems. At a time when many of the world's largest companies are making the transition to object technology, David Taylor has updated his book to address the important issues facing the growth of object technology and to provide a glimpse into the future of this evolving paradigm. In updating this seminal work, David Taylor has retained the signature conciseness and clarity of discussion that made the first edition a best-seller. Object Technology: A Manager's Guide, Second Edition, covers the key terms, emerging concepts, and useful applications of objects. Managers, salespeople, engineers, software developers — anyone interested in understanding or implementing object technology — will find this a lucid introduction to the topic. Highlights of this new edition include: an explanation of how to use objects to create evolutionary software that rapidly adapts to changing business conditions, eliminating the need for most new application development; an introduction to Java, and an explanation of how its use of message interfaces enables a new generation of portable, mix-and-match, Internet-enabled business objects; an update on the state of object databases and extended relational databases, with guidelines for combining the two for optimal information storage; and an introduction to the new generation of object engines and how they combine storage and execution capabilities for maximum software integration.

This is the eBook version of the printed book. Most design pattern books are based on C++ and Java. But Ruby is different–and the language's unique qualities make design patterns easier to implement and use. In "Design Patterns in Ruby," Russ Olsen demonstrates how to combine Ruby's power and elegance with patterns, and write more sophisticated, effective software with far fewer lines of code. After reviewing the history, concepts, and goals of design patterns, the author offers a quick tour of the Ruby language–enough to allow any experienced software developer to immediately utilize patterns with Ruby. The book especially calls attention to Ruby features that simplify the use of patterns, including dynamic typing, code closures, and "mixins" for easier code reuse.Fourteen of the classic "Gang of Four" patterns are considered from the Ruby point of view, explaining what problems each pattern solves, discussing whether traditional implementations make sense in the Ruby environment, and introducing Ruby-specific improvements. You'll discover opportunities to implement patterns in just one or two lines of code, instead of the endlessly repeated boilerplate that conventional languages often require."Design Patterns in Ruby" also identifies innovative new patterns that have emerged from the Ruby community. These include ways to create custom objects with metaprogramming, as well as the ambitious Rails-based "Convention over Configuration" pattern, designed to help integrate entire applications and frameworks.Engaging, practical, and accessible, this book will help you build better software while making your Ruby programming experience more rewarding.

This book provides detailed instructions on how to customize and reconfigure consoles to a wide variety of ends--from the cosmetic case modifications to the ambitious porting of Linux to the Nintendo GameCube.
In November of 1977, Atari shipped its first 400,000 Video Computer Systems. Since that time, over 1.2 billion consoles have been sold worldwide, and a large percentage of those are still hanging around as "classic systems". An avid (some would say rabid) community of video game hackers and hardware geeks has developed around a common passion to push their consoles, and the games themselves, beyond the functionality originally intended by the manufacturers.
This book is the first on the market to cover the entire range of consoles produced over the last 25 years (most game hacks and geeks own multiple platforms). It provides detailed instructions on how to customize and reconfigure consoles to a wide variety of ends--from the cosmetic case modifications to the ambitious porting of Linux to the Nintendo GameCube. Platforms covered in this book include Atari, Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox, and Gamepark 32.

PHP|Architect's Guide to PHP Design Patterns
Marco Tabini & Associates, Inc. | ISBN: 0973589825 | 340 pages | July 1, 2005 | PDF | 2 Mb
You have probably heard a lot about Design Patterns—a technique that helps you design rock-solid solutions to practical problems that programmers everywhere encounter in their day-to-day work.
Even though there has been a lot of buzz, however, no-one has yet come up with a comprehensive resource on design patterns for PHP developers—until today.
Author Jason E. Sweat's book php|architect's Guide to PHP Design Patterns is the first, comprehensive guide to design patterns designed specifically for the PHP developer. This book includes coverage of 16 design patterns with a specific eye to their applications in PHP when building complex web applications, both in PHP 4 and PHP 5 (where appropriate, sample code for both versions of the language is provided). With a thorough, test-driven approach, this book represents the definitive guide to design patterns for the PHP developer.
As you can expect from a php|architect book, this Guide is very focused on its topic, with none of the fluff that accompanies the large, expensive titles you sometimes find at the bookstore. Naturally, this doesn't come at the expense of depth of coverage or clarity: the book contains tens of scripts that give you a practical overview of every topic covered, from top to bottom.

This earnest guide to career transition periods-when a new job or promotion puts an employee in an unfamiliar role-asserts, reassuringly, that navigating the all-important first 90 days is a "teachable skill." Business professor Watkins, co-author of Right From the Start: Taking Charge in a New Leadership Role, lays out a "standard framework" for leadership transitions, based on "five fundamental propositions," "ten key challenges," and a four-fold typology of situations that new managers find themselves in. Fortunately, Watkins balances the theorizing with practical steps managers can take to get on top of things and initiate changes, including elaborate self-assessment checklists, planning exercises and meticulous guidelines on how to have conversations with underlings and bosses. His advice, if not very original, is sound. He warns managers not to assume that their existing skills will suffice for new roles, advises them to pursue small-scale "early wins" to boost credibility, and admonishes workplace Machiavellis to "avoid pressing for closure until you are confident the balance of forces acting on key people is tipping your way." Watkins's penchant for cut-and-dried schematizations sometimes goes overboard, especially in the book's plethora of elementary graphs, tables, diagrams and matrices (novice orators are informed that "classic values invoked to convince others to embrace potentially painful change are summarized in table 8-1," while the oceanic topic of "Intersecting Cultural Dimensions" gets boiled down to a three-ring Venn diagram). But if the content of Watkins's counsel is not always obviously helpful, his systematized approach to thinking will at least help panicky executives keep their wits about them.

In the Age of Enlightenment the German philosopher Immanuel Kant encouraged people to use their own mind as the basis for reasoning instead of following dogmatic religious rules - Sapere aude! (dare to know!) - Today wireless communication networks are increasingly becoming aware of the conditions of its their component parts and surrounding environment. Cognition, a continuous process involving sensing, reasoning, understanding and reacting, can be applied to wireless networks in order to adapt the system to the highly dynamic wireless ecosystem. The ultimate goals are to enhance the efficiency in the use of radio resources as well as to improve both link and network performance. This book presents a detailed overview of a rapidly emerging topic in modern communications: cognitive wireless networks. The key aspects of cognitive and cooperative principles in wireless networks are discussed in this book. Furthermore, Cognitive Wireless Networks advocates the concept of breaking up the cellular communication architecture by introducing cooperative strategies among wireless devices. Cognitive wireless networking is the key to success in handling the upcoming dynamic network configurations and exploiting this cross-over to the fullest extent. As wireless networks become pervasive, highly populated and increasingly complex, the essential preconditions for exploiting rich interactions among mobile devices are better fulfilled. Today, these trends are giving rise to new communications paradigms making use of cooperation and cognition as the main underlying principles. Cognition, together with its complementary principle cooperation, confer to the wireless networks some degree of consciousness or understanding about their own existence, such as internal structure, capabilities, relationships to the outside world, limitations, current use of radio resources and many more. Current wireless networks are aware of their surrounding environment to a very limited extent, but in future wireless networks this capability will be highly developed, as a consequence of exploiting jointly cooperative and cognitive principles. Especially for cooperative wireless networks, where the communication scenario is highly dynamic, the mobile devices need to adapt their capabilities in a flexible manner, taking advantage of cognitive principles.

At its broadest definition, “information technology” is an umbrella term that describes all fields that relate to the organization and dissemination of information: from the worker who lays cable wires to the telephone switchboard operator to the engineer who designs the circuits in your computer. However, keep in mind that just because IT is computer-related, it doesn’t mean that a job in the field is necessarily with a computer-intensive company. In fact, the majority of the IT services jobs today are in fields that have little to do with high tech. What this means for you, the job seeker, is that opportunities are not limited to one industry but cross a wide variety of industries. Interested in taking on an IT role? Learn more by reading this brand new guide.
In it, you will find:
Where the opportunities for entry are across various industries, from education to health care and the Internet
What kind of skills and education are required to get hired
What types of jobs you may want to consider, including creative, sales/marketing, support, and engineering positions
What life is like as a UI designer, IT consultant, or engineer

HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Central Asia: Country Profiles is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank’s ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. The countries of Central Asia are still at the earliest stage of an HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, the region is experiencing: steep growth of new HIV cases; related epidemics of injected drug use, sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis; a high percentage of youth in the total population; and low levels of knowledge about the epidemics. HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis may have devastating effects on human capital, economic development, and health system reform. To address this impending crisis, the World Bank has initiated the study of HIV/AIDS, STIs, and TB in Central Asia. This study presents country profiles that were developed to inform Bank management and other stakeholders about the main characteristics of the epidemics. The profiles cover epidemiology; strategic and regulatory frameworks; surveillance; preventive, diagnostic, and treatment activities; non-governmental and partner activities; and resources available. This report summarizes the main issues identified by this initial assessment and recommends further study and action.

Book Description
Palmistry, or Cheiromancy (pronounced “kei-ro-mansy” is a very popular and accurate way of divining. The famous nineteenth century palmist, Leic de Hamon (Louis Hamon) was named “Cheiro” after it.
The art of Palmistry can be traced back as far as the Stone Ages.Pictures of human hands are frequently found in cave drawings, indicating their special interest in this part of the body. These paintings can be seen in the Lascaux Caves in France, the remarkable Santander caves in Spain and in several caves in Africa.
The ancient Vedic scriptures contained an abundance of information on palmistry. K.C. Sen, an eminent Indian palmist, says the earliest writings on palmistry were ancient Sanskrit. These verses have been preserved and are still guarded from the public eye. Cheiro, the famous palmist, claimed to have seen one of these manuscripts in the early 1900’s.
Before the birth of Buddha in 563 B.C., leading seers of the time gathered at the royal palace. They were drawn by extraordinary indications revealed in the stars. They were ecstatic to find the mark of the wheel on Buddha’s hands and feet, indicating his future greatness. Palmists in India still look for this special mark in the palms of babies.
Gypsies came into the picture around the eleventh century, though they had been practising palmistry for centuries before. Sigismund, the Holy Roman Emperor, enlisted the gypsies as spies.
Word of this soon spread and when Gypsies arrived at the gates of Paris in 1427 they were not allowed inside. However, the citizens of the city, intrigued and excited by these romantic strangers, rushed outside to have their fortunes told. The tradition of crossing a Gypsy’s palm with silver, dates back to this era.
The church claimed the Gypsies were in league with the Devil. To counter this, the Gypsies explained that the Devil was afraid of both silver and the sign of the cross. Therefore, if you made a sign of the cross over a Gypsy’s hand with silver you would be protected.
Needless to say, the gypsies kept the silver. Interest in using palmistry for psychological analysis is a product of the last century. The first major work on this subject was Julius Spier’s The Hands of Children, which appeared in 1944. Not surprisingly, the introduction was written by Carl Jung. This was quickly followed by works from Noel Jaquin, Charlotte Wolf, and in 1990, by Andrew Fizherbert.
Since the Second World War, research on palm patterns has been going on at the Kennedy Galton Centre near London. This research has lead scientists to confirm that health factors can be determined in the hand.
The current research into dermatoglyphics (the study of skin patterns)is potentially the most exciting development in the history of palmistry.
Although palmistry dates back to the Stone Ages, its greatest period is just beginning.
The future of palmistry is assured now that scientists are proving its validity!

In the eye-blink that has elapsed since the turn of the millennium, the lives of those of us who work with information have been utterly transformed. Pretty well all we need to know is on the web; if not today, then tomorrow. It’s where we learn and play, shop and do business, keep up with old friends and meet new ones. What makes it possible for us to find the stuff we need to know? Search engines.
Search engines - “web dragons” - are the portals through which we access society’s treasure trove of information. How do they stack up against librarians, the gatekeepers over centuries past? What role will libraries play in a world whose information is ruled by the web? How is the web organized? Who controls its contents, and how do they do it? How do search engines work? How can web visibility be exploited by those who want to sell us their wares? What’s coming tomorrow, and can we influence it? We are witnessing the dawn of a new era, starting right now - and this book shows you what it will look like and how it will change your world.
Do you use search engines every day? Are you a developer or a librarian, helping others with their information needs? A researcher or journalist for whom the web has changed the very way you work? An online marketer or site designer, whose career exists because of the web? Whoever you are: if you care about information, this book will open your eyes - and make you blink.

Book author: John E. Sarno
Amazon Rating: 4.5
Book Description:
Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain–Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)–and isn’t really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don’t work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs–and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind’s effort to repress emotions. He’s not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he’s saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in (”and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough”), the trick doesn’t work any more, and there’s no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) –Joan Price

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (officially titled the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002), signed into law on 30 July 2002 by President Bush, is considered the most significant change to federal securities laws in the United States since the New Deal. It came in the wake of a series of corporate financial scandals, including those affecting Enron, Arthur Andersen, and WorldCom. The law is named after Senator Paul Sarbanes and Representative Michael G. Oxley. It was approved by the House by a vote of 423-3 and by the Senate 99-0.
This book illustrates the many Open Source cost-saving opportunities that public companies can explore in their IT enterprise to meet mandatory compliance requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley act. This book will also demonstrate by example and technical reference both the infrastructure components for Open Source that can be made compliant, and the Open Source tools that can aid in the journey of compliance. Although many books and reference material have been authored on the financial and business side of Sox compliance, very little material is available that directly address the information technology considerations, even less so on how Open Source fits into that discussion.
The format of the book will begin each chapter with the IT business and executive considerations of Open Source and SOX compliance. The remaining chapter verbiage will include specific examinations of Open Source applications and tools which relate to the given subject matter, and last a bootable ?live? CD will have fully configured running demonstrations of Open Source tools as a valuable technical reference for implementation of the concepts provided in the book
* Only book that shows companies how to use Open Source tools to achieve SOX compliance, which dramatically lowers the cost of using proprietary, commercial applications.
* Only SOX book with a bootable-Linux CD containing countless applications, forms, and checklists to assist companies in achieving SOX compliance.
* Only SOX compliance book specifically detailing steps to achieve SOX compliance for IT Professionals.

This book provides comprehensive information on the disorder for people with spasmodic torticollis and those close to them. Medical terms and concepts are introduced sequentially and then used as building blocks for the later discussion.

Book author: George Perry, Jesus Avila, June Kinoshita, Mark A. Smith
Book Description:
This publication is a landmark work commemorating the centennial of Alois Alzheimer’s discovery of what would be known as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The centennial of Alois Alzheimer?s original description of the disease that would come to bear his name offers a vantage point from which to commemorate the seminal discoveries in the field. It traces how the true importance of AD as the major cause of late life dementia ultimately came to light and narrates the evolution of the concepts related to AD throughout the years and its recognition as a major public health problem, with an estimated 30-40 million people affected by AD today. To identify the breakthroughs, the editors have used citation analysis, landmark papers identified by current researchers, and drew upon their own experience and insights. This process took into account the perspectives of individuals who recall the impact of findings at the time they were made, as well as of scientists today who have the advantage of hindsight in weighing the lasting influence of these findings. Because modern AD research was triggered by the seminal work of Tomlinson, Blessed, and Roth some four decades ago, it is particularly fortunate that the vast majority of these milestone authors are still with us.

Elsevier's Dictionary of Medicine and Biology (US$225)Stationary Office | Pages:2590 | 2005-10-03 | ISBN:0444514406 | 12 MB
Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms.
This dictionary contains a total of about 27.500 main English entries, and over of 130.000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the development period in order of importance were usage, up-to-dateness, specificity, simplicity and conceptual relationships. The dictionary meets the standards of higher education and covers all main fields of life sciences by setting its primary focus on the vastly developing fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, genetics and also the fields of human anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology, zoology and botany.
The fields of ecology, paleontology, systematics, evolution, biostatistics, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant histology, biometry and lab techniques have been sufficiently covered but in a more general manner. The latest Latin international anatomical terminology "Terminologia Anatomica" or "TA" has been fully incorporated and all anatomical entries have been given their international Latin TA synonym. This dictionary will be a valuable and helpful tool for all scientists, teachers, students and generally all those that work within the fields of life sciences.

Indian Medicinal Plants: An Illustrated DictionarySpringer | ISBN: 0387706372 | 2007-07-14 | PDF | 836 pages | 7.94 Mb | RS
The Dictionary is the first updated source of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha synonyms of their botanical counterparts, after a gap of more than 30 years. The synonyms which appeared in "The Wealth of India" series (1948-1976) and in Chopra’s "Glossary of Indian Medicinal Plants" (1956) have been updated till January, 2007. More than 2000 medicinal plants of "The Ayurvedic Formulary of India" and "The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India" and more than 100 species of non-Indian origin, incorporated in "National Formulary of Unani Medicine" have been covered in the Dictionary. Divergent sources of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha herbs have been identified and a number of controversies have been sorted out. Pharmacognosy experts have selected important herbs, which were specially collected from leading pharamaceutical companies and pharmacopoeial laboratories and included in the dictionary as four colour photographs under the "Crude Herb Identification Guide" section. This is a unique feature and makes it an exclusive treat. The Dictionary has been presented in a user-friendly format, as a compact, handy, easy to use and moderately priced one-volume reference work. It unfolds hidden virtues and potentials of Indian herbs for busy professionals, researchers, practitioners of herbal as well as modern medicine, and library frequenters. It will prove a ready information source for students of botany, economic botany, pharmacy, agricultural and medical sciences, who aspire to have an edge over others and are keen to keep themselves abreast of the times.

Book Description:
In multiple sclerosis (MS), conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) has proved to be a valuable tool to increase diagnostic confidence and for monitoring the efficacy of experimental treatment. However, cMRI has limited specificity and accuracy of cMRI to the most disabling aspects of the MS pathology, known to occur in and outside macroscopic lesions. Modern quantitative MR techniques have the potential to overcome the limitations of cMRI, and their application is changing dramatically our understanding of how MS causes irreversible disability. In detail, there is an increasing body of MR evidence that MS is not only a white matter disease and does not only cause focal lesions, as well as that neurodegeneration is an important aspect of the disease (since the earliest clinical phases), which is only partially related to inflammatory changes. There is also increasing perception that modern MR methodologies should be more extensively employed in clinical trials to derive innovative information.

Over the years, as Warren Buffett's influence and affluence have grown, one thing has remained the same—his unpretentious, honest, and optimistic approach toward business and life. In this completely revised edition of Warren Buffett Speaks, bestselling author Janet Lowe shows you why.
Updated to reflect Buffett's life over the past decade, this book contains a delightfully entertaining collection of quotes, writings, and favorite sayings from the world's most successful investor.
Often surprising, always intriguing, and sparked throughout by Buffett's unique combination of savvy business smarts and dry wit, this new edition is filled with Buffett's musings on subjects such as the Internet economy, family and friends, running a business, paying taxes, and much more. It also examines the thinking that prompted the second richest man in the world to give 85% of his wealth to the first richest couple (Bill and Melinda Gates) to distribute to charity.
More than just a book about investing, Warren Buffett Speaks reveals the personality and philosophy of one of the world's most compelling figures.
Peppered with pearls of wisdom cultivated throughout his life, this book will help you understand and appreciate Buffett's beliefs on a variety of important issues. Here's a sample of just some of the honest and engaging insights you'll find inside:
"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently."
"You don't need to be a rocket scientist. Investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with a 130 IQ. Rationality is essential."
"I want to be able to explain my mistakes. This means I do only the things I completely understand."
"You should invest in a business that even a fool could run, because someday a fool will."
"Over the years, a number of very smart people have learned the hard way that a long stream of impressive numbers multiplied by a single zero always equals zero."

China: Fragile Superpower: How China's Internal Politics Could Derail Its Peaceful Rise
# Author:Susan L. Shirk (谢淑丽)
# Format:PDF 3.1MB
# Page Count: 336 pages
# Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA (March 16, 2007)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0195306090
# ISBN-13: 978-0195306095
Once a sleeping giant, China today is the world's fastest growing economy--the leading manufacturer of cell phones, laptop computers, and digital cameras--a dramatic turn-around that alarms many Westerners. But in China: The Fragile Superpower, Susan L. Shirk opens up the black box of Chinese politics and finds that the real danger lies elsewhere--not in China's astonishing growth, but in the deep insecurity of its leaders. China's leaders face a troubling paradox: the more developed and prosperous the country becomes, the more insecure and threatened they feel. Shirk, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State responsible for China, knows many of today's Chinese rulers personally and has studied them for three decades. She offers invaluable insight into how they think--and what they fear. In this revealing book, readers see the world through the eyes of men like President Hu Jintao and former President Jiang Zemin. We discover a fragile communist regime desperate to survive in a society turned upside down by miraculous economic growth and a stunning new openness to the greater world. Theirs is a regime afraid of its own citizens, and this fear motivates many of their decisions when dealing with the U.S. and other foreign nations. In particular, the fervent nationalism of the Chinese people, combined with their passionate resentment of Japan and attachment to Taiwan, have made relations with these two regions a minefield. It is here, Shirk concludes, in the tangled interactions between Japan, Taiwan, China, and the United States, that the greatest danger lies. Shirk argues that rising powers such as China tend to provoke wars in large part because other countries mishandle them. Unless we understand China's brittle internal politics and the fears that motivate its leaders, we face the very real possibility of avoidable conflict with China. This book provides that understanding.
About the Author
Susan L. Shirk, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State responsible for U.S. relations with China, is Director of the University of California's Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, and she is a professor at UC-San Diego's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. A leading authority on China, she has been visiting that country since 1971, meeting with top Chinese officials, and has written numerous books and articles on this subject, including pieces that have appeared in The Washington Post, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal.

The Oxford Thesaurus
# Author:Laurence Urdang
# Format:PDF 2.73MB
# Page Count: 1054 pages
# Publisher: Clarendon Press; De Luxe Ed edition (October 6, 1994)
# ISBN-10: 0191958018
# ISBN-13: 978-0191958014
First published in 1991, the very successful first edition of The Oxford Thesaurus has now sold over 126,000 copies. This new edition (NB new format), which for the first time includes antonyms in the main A-Z text, along with many additional new synonyms, broadens the book's appeal still further. The Oxford Thesaurus remains the most useful A-Z thesaurus available today, with more practical guidance for the user than any other competing title. Around 350,000 synonyms and antonyms, covering general English as well as thousands of regional and idiomatic words and expressions, are listed in A-Z form for ease of reference. Generous and detailed labelling shows how to use synonyms, and example sentences throughout make it even easier to select the correct synonym. The most useful synonyms (ie those that are closest in meaning to the headword) are listed first - a more helpful arrangement than a simple alphabetical listing under the headword. If the word for which you seek an alternative is not to be found as a headword, you can simply turn to the synonym index which lists 265,000 synonyms and shows you under which headword each synonym is located. In addition, all synonyms which also have their own headword entry (at which further related words may be found) are indicated by a simple cross-reference symbol. On the first edition: 'handier than Roget both in being alphabetical and in offering example-sentences. The mot juste in just a mo.' Prof. Sir Randolph Quirk, The Observer.

Global Technological Change: From Hard Technology To Soft Technology
# Author:Zhouying Jin
# Format:PDF 1.3MB
# Page Count: 317 pages
# Publisher: Intellect (UK) (June 30, 2005)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 1841501247
# ISBN-13: 978-1841501246
During the last two or three decades there have been a series of efforts to bring attention to the human dimension of work as it relates to technology advancements. For example, Calvin Pava's work at Harvard with socio-technical analysis provided this perspective for the environment of the knowledge worker. There have also been continuous developments in the discipline of human factors; however, human factors addresses only a specific set of domains and issues. We do need a more generic comprehensive approach. As Professor Jin puts it, we need an approach that addresses "skills, tools and rules that are employed by humans to alter, accommodate and manage nature for human survival and development." To that end, she defines soft technology as the intellectual technology of creation and innovation centered in human thought, ideology, emotion, values, world view, individual and organizational behaviors, as well as in human society."
Professor Jin presents a solid foundation for espousing her work on soft technology. This includes frameworks that have philosophical roots in Chinese culture. I find her use of the harmony and balance dynamics from eastern "yin-yang" philosophy to be extremely useful in the relationship between hard technology and soft technology. This analogy is easily communicated and the resulting framework has enough breadth to expand and structure our views about how we should consider soft technology in the creation of hard technology.
This book is also a must read for people who are doing business in China, especially those involved in research and development. Numerous Chinese examples are provided that relate to the academic basis of soft technology as well as to Chinese business, cultural, and political considerations. Researchers will find the bibliography to be a substantial source for Chinese publications in related disciplines. I would recommend that future editions of the book provide an index for reader convenience. In the effort to accomplish the challenging work of translation, the index may have been overlooked.

# Format:PDF 1.2MB
# Page Count: 352 pages
# Publisher: Dream Point Publishers
# Language: English
# ISBN-13: 978-0-9719324-7-6
How vast is the topic of Leadership and Success? How can you benefit from skills in leadership? Can there be success without leadership in some area? Are the principles the same for an individual, a group, or a society? Are the practices the same for an individual, a group, or a society? Is this a topic that can be taught or is it something that is innate? How do you define leadership? What is success? These are just some of the questions answered in the series on Leadership and Success. The topic is too broad for a single book. A series of three volumes provide the foundations for continued personal development and growth. Each book in the Leadership & Success series addresses a different group of topics, each related to your success as a leader. The structure of this series is based on the three areas of leadership involvement: internal development, horizontal interactions, and vertical relationships. The progression of the three books is arranged in the order in which you, as a leader, can have the most impact: people, organization, and society.

Whether at work or at home, we all have to deal with people we can't stand to be around. Our challenge is to develop creative ways to handle these difficult people. Brinkman and Kirschner, both doctors of naturopathic medicine and professional speakers, have just made our job easier with this lively guidebook, in which they identify and explore the psychological roots of ten specific behavior patterns that represent normal people at their worst. Realizing that changing oneself is more realistic than changing the behavior of others, the authors provide a variety of communicative skills that we can cultivate in ourselves to turn conflict into cooperation. Finally, Brinkman and Kirschner (How To Handle Difficult People with Tact and Skill, McGraw, 1994) illustrate how to use these skills with each of the ten problem behaviors. While all problem behaviors might not fit nicely into one of their ten categories, the authors do provide a dynamic assortment of interpersonal communication tools for managing most difficult people. Highly recommended for all libraries.

There is growing interest in the use of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) as a Qualitative Market Research technique. NLP was previously used in psychology to understand how people think and react, and as a tool in self-development, interpersonal skills and business, looking at how our brains think and experience the world.
Qualitative Market research experts now see that using NLP can help the researchers understand the human brain and, armed with this power, they can find out the truth from interviewees. The Hidden Art of Interviewing People shows how, by using NLP and related techniques in interviews, the market researcher can see beyond the obvious to the truth.
The book provides:
* Practical tools for decoding marketing problems and respondents reactions to questions
* Features a range of techniques from NLP including rapport development, linguistics, reading facial expressions, body language and spatial positioning
"An excellent book that meets the needs of a large number of market research practitioners, and also academics, it is comparatively rare to read a book written by a first class practitioner who is prepared to share the concepts and principles of exactly how the qualitative research craft really works."
