Traditional relational databases and embedded databases both have shortcomings that can leave a developer perplexed. So for many people, the solution resides in an open source embeddable database with an amazingly small footprint (less than 250 kilobytes). SQLite packs a powerful array of features and can handle databases as large as 2 terabytes. It offers a flexible set of datatypes and the ability to perform transactions, and it is supported by languages like C, PHP, Perl, and Python. And because SQLite’s databases are completely file based, privileges are granted at the operating system level, allowing for easy and fast user management.

The Definitive Guide to SQLite is the first book to devote complete coverage to the latest version of this powerful database. It offers you a thorough overview of SQLite capabilities and APIs, while remaining cognizant of newcomers who may be making their first foray into a database environment with SQLite. This book serves as both a first-time tutorial and future reference guide.

Do you think that only experts with a deep understanding of the inner workings of ASP.NET, SQL Server, and IIS can improve a website’s performance? Think again - because this book tosses that notion out of the window. It will help you resolve every web developer’s nightmare - a slow website - with angry managers looking over your shoulder, raging calls from advertisers and clients - the lot. You don’t have the time or energy to gain a thorough and complete understanding of ASP.NET performance optimization - You just need your site to run faster! This book will show you how.

This hands-on book shows how to dramatically improve the performance of your ASP.NET-based website straight away, without forcing you through a lot of theoretical learning. It teaches you practical, step-by-step techniques that you can use right away to make your site faster with just the right amount of theory you need to make sense of it all.

Start reading today and you could have a faster website tomorrow.

Unlike other performance-related books, here you’ll first learn how to pinpoint the bottlenecks that hold back your site’s performance, so you can initially focus your time and energy on those areas of your site where you can quickly make the biggest difference. It then shows you how to fix the bottlenecks you found with lots of working code samples and practical advice, and just the right amount of theoretical detail.

The first chapter details techniques for diagnosing performance issues using Waterfall charts. Subsequent chapters then each focus on one individual aspect of your website, providing you with numerous real-life scenarios and performance-enhancing techniques for each of them. In the last chapter, you learn how to effectively load-test your environment in order to measure the change in performance of your site without having to update your production environment - whether it is a new release or simply a small change in the database.

What you will learn from this book

  • Learn how to pinpoint and fix bottlenecks relating to all aspects of your site - server side, client side, code, images, and database.
  • Ensure shorter wait times for your site.
  • Eliminate the need to hire a DBA, by speeding up database access using insight into index structures and other advanced techniques.
  • Drastically speed up image loading, by exploiting browser behavior and by removing the hidden overhead in each image file.
  • Use ASP.NET’s caching feature to dramatically improve performance by adding just a few lines of code.
  • Prevent a little known bottleneck overlooked by most developers - a shortage of worker threads in IIS - by using asynchronous methods.
  • Enable compression in IIS 6 and IIS 7 to cut file transfer times and bandwidth costs.
  • Reduce your Memory and CPU usage.
  • Optimize the deployment and usage of forms on your website.
  • Speed up JavaScript and CSS loading.
  • Diagnose problems as they occur, using waterfall charts.
  • Load-test your environment to measure the level of improvement in performance.
  • Find heaps of reference links and descriptions of free and low cost tools and services that make it easy to spot performance issues right away.

Approach

Written in a practical and clear conversational style, this book is filled with real-life website performance scenarios. It is replete with lots of working code samples and practical advice, and just the right amount of theory you need to make sense of it all.

Flash virtual worlds are some of the most exciting-and profitable-online business being built today. Using Flash, developers can build interactive environments where users can interact with the virtual world and one another, compete, and have fun. Creating a playful environment on an electronic network presents unique challenges as you combine a fun, upbeat frontend with some serious and complex server logic.

This handy book assists you in building amazing virtual worlds in no time by implementing ActionScripts in a Flash IDE. With this book in hand, you will build virtual worlds that have avatars walking around and interacting with non playing characters, completing challenging quests, and allowing users to link with real-world friends.

The fun begins with first exploring existing virtual world games such as Club Penguin, Mole, Dofus, and World of Warcraft. We will then design our virtual environment. Then we will create avatars and move the avatars in the virtual world. We will add some triggers to add amusement and life to the virtual world. We will allow the avatars to interact with other players and create a buddy list for each user. Then we will integrate buildings and other environment to the virtual world. We will also let the players interact with non-player characters to complete some tasks. Finally, we move on to add interesting quests to the virtual world, which need to be accomplished by the player to gear up to the next level of the game.

This example-rich, hands-on guide sequentially develops a multiplayer virtual world-the platform, the environment, quests, avatars, non-playing characters, and interaction between them.

Frequently PHP developers encounter unexpected results that adversely affect their software and web applications. This book will undoubtedly help them tackle those issues. This book covers a variety of areas including: history of calendars and time standards, giving the reader a better understanding of how date/time concepts evolved into the way they are today parsing date/time strings and the potential pitfalls a developer can encounter timezones, the quirks inherent in them, and how your application can handle these quirks formatting and representing times and dates correctly and dealing with the DateTime Object manipulating and working with past, future and recurring dates obtaining dates when timestamps aren’t available format specifiers upgrading the master timezone database What are PHP experts saying about this book? “Complex date and time programming isn’t just for international applications. Even in the US, we have to deal with up to nine different time zones, and shifting between these can be difficult. Derick is one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to date and time programming. I have turned to him countless times for help, and now he brings that depth of knowledge to this book. If you need to parse dates and times, shift between time zones, or manipulate dates and times in your applications then this book is for you.” - Ben Ramsey “If you ever have to deal with parsing or formatting timestamps, or dealing with timezones this is the definite reference to make your time related PHP coding tasks fast and simple!” -Elizabeth Marie Smith This is the most comprehensive book on date/time data for PHP available, and one that any PHP developer can’t do without.

C++ is a large, complex language, and learning it is never entirely easy. But some concepts and techniques must be thoroughly mastered if programmers are ever to do professional-quality work. This book cuts through the technical details to reveal what is commonly understood to be absolutely essential. In one slim volume, Steve Dewhurst distills what he and other experienced managers, trainers, and authors have found to be the most critical knowledge required for successful C++ programming. It doesn’t matter where or when you first learned C++. Before you take another step, use this book as your guide to make sure you’ve got it right!

This book is for you if

  • You’re no “dummy,” and you need to get quickly up to speed in intermediate to advanced C++
  • You’ve had some experience in C++ programming, but reading intermediate and advanced C++ books is slow-going
  • You’ve had an introductory C++ course, but you’ve found that you still can’t follow your colleagues when they’re describing their C++ designs and code
  • You’re an experienced C or Java programmer, but you don’t yet have the experience to develop nuanced C++ code and designs
  • You’re a C++ expert, and you’re looking for an alternative to answering the same questions from your less-experienced colleagues over and over again

C++ Common Knowledge covers essential but commonly misunderstood topics in C++ programming and design while filtering out needless complexity in the discussion of each topic. What remains is a clear distillation of the essentials required for production C++ programming, presented in the author’s trademark incisive, engaging style.

Resilient T-SQL code is code that is designed to last, and to be safely reused by others. The goal of defensive database programming, the goal of this book, is to help you to produce resilient T-SQL code that robustly and gracefully handles cases of unintended use, and is resilient to common changes to the database environment. Too often as developers, we stop work as soon as our code passes a few basic tests to confirm that it produces the ‘right result’ in a given use case. We do not stop to consider what other possible ways in which the code might be used in the future, or how our code will respond to common changes to the database environment, such as a change in the database language setting, or a change to the nullability of a table column, and so on. In the short-term, this approach is attractive; we get things done faster. However, if our code is designed to be used for more than just a few months, then it is very likely that such changes can and will occur, and the inevitable result is broken code or, even worse, code that silently starts to behave differently, or produce different results. When this happens, the integrity of our data is threatened, as is the validity of the reports on which critical business decisions are often based. At this point, months or years later, and long after the original developer has left, begins the painstaking process of troubleshooting and fixing the problem. Would it not be easier to prevent all this troubleshooting from happening? Would it not be better to spend a little more time and effort during original development, to save considerably more time on troubleshooting, bug fixing, retesting, and redeploying? This is what defensive programming is all about: we learn what can go wrong with our code, and we proactively apply this knowledge during development. This book is filled with practical, realistic examples of the sorts of problems that beset database programs, including: - Changes in database objects, such as tables, constraints, columns, and stored procedures. - Changes to concurrency and isolation levels. - Upgrades to new versions of SQL Server. - Changes in requirements. - Code reuse. - Problems causing loss of data integrity. - Problems with error handling in T-SQL. In each case, it demonstrates approaches that will help you understand and enforce (or eliminate) the assumptions on which your solution is based, and to improve its robustness. Ultimately, the book teaches you how to think and develop defensively, and how to proactively identify and eliminate potential vulnerabilities in T-SQL code.

This book should be read by anyone who cares about the security and privacy of their online information, and wants to know how to take steps to protect it … and that should be everyone. This book should be read by anyone who wants to “do the right thing” and ensure that they do not inadvertently compromise their employer’s, or their own, sensitive information … and that should be everyone.

Modern corporations do their best to hammer home the message of security through training, communications, and outright begging. The message often falls on deaf ears, not because employees want to make their workplaces unsafe, but rather, because the topic is so complex and wide-ranging that it simply is overwhelming. As an information security professional, it is their charge to make the online world safer for all of us. None of us tolerates a crime spree in our neighborhood. Likewise, we should not tolerate the current crime wave that is sweeping the Internet, one which truly threatens to stifle the e-commerce and e-communications that we have come to know and rely on.

Effective design is at the heart of everything from software development to engineering to architecture. But what do we really know about the design process? What leads to effective, elegant designs? The Design of Designaddresses these questions. These new essays by Fred Brooks contain extraordinary insights for designers in every discipline. Brooks pinpoints constants inherent in all design projects and uncovers processes and patterns likely to lead to excellence. Drawing on conversations with dozens of exceptional designers, as well as his own experiences in several design domains, Brooks observes that bold design decisions lead to better outcomes.

The author tracks the evolution of the design process, treats collaborative and distributed design, and illuminates what makes a truly great designer. He examines the nuts and bolts of design processes, including budget constraints of many kinds, aesthetics, design empiricism, and tools, and grounds this discussion in his own real-world examples—case studies ranging from home construction to IBM’s Operating System/360. Throughout, Brooks reveals keys to success that every designer, design project manager, and design researcher should know.

The Secrets of Building Lifelong Client LoyaltyWhether business leaders want a steady drizzle or an out-and-out monsoon, they can use Sobel’s formula for landing and keeping customers-what he calls “making rain.” Based on building relationships, it starts with the key components of knowledge, service and demonstrable value; these are the building blocks that attract clients, says business adviser Sobel (Clients for Life). In this straightforward manual, he gives practical strategies to help leaders of service firms and large corporations alike become indispensable advisers to their clients, thus cementing a long-term connection. The principles behind his tactics are simple: get to know your client, gain respect for your knowledge and win personal respect. Then, drive it home by delivering above and beyond, again and again. These ideas are old as dirt. Sobel reaches across centuries to dig up examples of their success, from Aristotle to Ben Franklin. He buffs up these ageless notions and places them within engaging anecdotes. Although the lessons aren’t strokes of genius, they should help professionals through most dry spells.

Interface Design Flash Tutorial
Learn to design interactive, animated interfaces using Flash.
Draw interfaces directly into the program!
Interface Design Tutorial, using Flash. Learn to design interactive, animated interfaces using Flash. Draw interfaces directly into the program.
The first five hours of this tutorial series cover illustration techniques, with some occasional animation.
The last hour teaches basic setup and coding for possible buttons or interactivity within the interfaces: mostly simple buttons and rollover events to trigger animation. Examples are taught for both Actionscript 2 and 3.
I’ve been using Flash for years. In fact, it’s one of my favorite programs to use for anything from web design to playing with graphics. I have no formal training when it comes to design. I just try to use my creativity and intuitive nature to figure out what I’m doing. Back in the day, you had to know a little bit about how Flash worked in order to use it. I struggled for some time, trying to figure out simple design concepts.
Justin has been creating Flash Tutorial/Training lessons since before 2010. I know this because I have payments for lessons dating as far back as that year. I took some of his earliest courses and feel I’m all the better for it. Justin’s courses are unique because they make it easy for people of nearly any learning style to learn how to use Flash.

Those who are visual learners can watch the video and then copy what Justin does in their own projects. Auditory learners can listen to the instructions Justin gives on his videos. They are casual, informal and downright entertaining. Hands on learners have the opportunity to jump right in and get to using Flash as Justin is explaining how to do it. These tutorials are just so comprehensive, nearly anyone can and will be able to learn how to use Flash, thanks to Justin.

This book takes a hands-on, practical approach to software development. The authors, all professional Drupal developers and contributors to the Drupal project, provide accessible coding samples designed to exhibit not only the technical merits and abilities of Drupal, but also proper architectural and stylistic approaches to coding on one of the world’s most popular content management systems. Every chapter provides fully functional code samples illustrating the APIs and strategies discussed in the chapter. With this foundation, developers can quickly build sophisticated tools on their own by making use of the strategies and techniques exemplified in this book. If you are a PHP developer or a Drupal user looking to dive into Drupal development then you will find this book an excellent introduction to coding within Drupal. Those with some Drupal experience will also find this an invaluable tool for updating their knowledge about the powerful new features of Drupal 7. Theme developers looking to extend their abilities will find this an accessible introduction to PHP coding within the Drupal environment. This book assumes that you are familiar with basic PHP programming, along with HTML and CSS. No experience with programming Drupal is required, although it is also a handy way for experienced Drupal developers to get up to speed with Drupal 7.

Thinking Animation Bridging the Gap Between 2D and CGLearn how to think before you animate. Thinking Animation is a one-of-a-kind book that emphasizes how artists can use traditional animation techniques and principles with the computer generated animation technology of today. Written by seasoned animators with experience in both 2D and CG, Thinking Animation is an exquisite guide aimed at experienced animators; however, the skills taught within are still accessible and valuable to the novice animator. This full-color book includes numerous interviews with experienced contributing authors from a wide range of backgrounds, including stop-motion, visual effects, traditional animation, and CG. Thinking Animation is non-software specific. It contains a history of the field of animation as well as insight into how CG studios operate. It embraces the future of animating with the computer while still retaining the core values that traditional animators use as formulas and principles.

The Secrets of Building Lifelong Client LoyaltyWhether business leaders want a steady drizzle or an out-and-out monsoon, they can use Sobel's formula for landing and keeping customers-what he calls "making rain." Based on building relationships, it starts with the key components of knowledge, service and demonstrable value; these are the building blocks that attract clients, says business adviser Sobel (Clients for Life). Although the lessons aren't strokes of genius, they should help professionals through most dry spells.

Organizing websites is highly dynamic and often chaotic. Thus, it is crucial that host web servers manipulate URLs in order to cope with temporarily or permanently relocated resources, prevent attacks by automated worms, and control resource access. The Apache mod_rewrite module has long inspired fits of joy because it offers an unparalleled toolset for manipulating URLs. The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewrite guides you through configuration and use of the module for a variety of purposes, including basic and conditional rewrites, access control, virtual host maintenance, and proxies. This book was authored by Rich Bowen, noted Apache expert and Apache Software Foundation member, and draws on his years of experience administering, and regular speaking and writing about, the Apache server.

The edge and surface inspection is one of the most important and most challenging tasks in quality assessment in industrial production. Typical defects are cracks, inclusions, pores, surface flakings, partial or complete tears of material surface and s.o. These defects can occur through defective source material or through extreme strain during machining process. Detection of defects on a materialc surface can be complicated due to extremely varying degrees of material brightness or due to shadow areas, caused by the folding of the surface. Furthermore, impurities or surface discolourations can lead to artefacts that can be detected as pseudo-defects.

The brightness conditions on the edge of material defects are interpreted as a Gauss distribution of a radiation and used for a physical model. Basing on this model, an essentially new set of adaptive edge-based algorithms was developed. Using these methods, different types of defects can be detected, without the measurements being dependent on local or global brightness conditions of the image taken. The new adaptive edge-based algorithms allow a defect detection on different materials, like metal, ceramics, plastics and stone.
