Herriot tells us that even at an early age "I was fascinated by dogs...I could never quite take dogs for granted. Why were they so devoted to the human race? Why should they delight in our company and welcome us home in transports of joy? Why should their greatest pleasure lie in being with us in our homes and wherever we were?...As a vet I could be with dogs all the time, attending to them, curing their illnesses, saving their lives." And although-as James Herriot was soon to find out-being a vet in the Yorkshire Dales meant caring for cows, sheep, and horses, with precious little time left over for "small animal" practice, somehow dogs continued to play a large pare in both his personal and his professional life.

Years ago, Harry Bosch learned the first rule of the good cop: don't look for the facts, but the glue that holds them together. Now, Harry's making some very dangerous connections, starting with one dead cop and leading to a bloody string of murders that winds from Hollywood Boulevard's drug bazaar to the dusty back alleys south of the border and into the center of a complex and lethal game -- one in which Harry is the next and likeliest victim.

Introducing Windows Server 2008
With technical insights direct from the Windows Server team, this practical introduction delivers real-world implementation scenarios and pragmatic advice for administering Windows Server in the enterprise.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of Windows Server 2008 at the Beta 3 milestone. Because Beta 3 is a pre-release version of the platform, some features will likely change before release to manufacturing (RTM) occurs. So the descriptions of these features in this book might not be completely accurate. However, please be assured that the author, working together with the Windows Server 2008 product team at Microsoft, has tried very hard to ensure that the information presented in this book will still be as accurate as possible even after RTM.

Brother Fish is an Australian saga spanning eighty years and four continents. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay's new novel tells the story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life. Jack McKenzie is a harmonica player, soldier, dreamer and small-time professional fisherman from a tiny island in Bass Strait. Nicole Lenoir-Jourdan is a strong-willed woman hiding from an ambiguous past in Shanghai. Larger than life, Private Jimmy Oldcorn was once a street kid and leader of a New York gang. Together, they reap a vast and not always legitimate fortune from the sea. Brother Fish is an inspiring human drama of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. But most of all it is about the power of friendship and love.

Fortran continues to be the premier language used in scientific and engineering computing since it’s introduction in the 1950s. Fortran 2003 is the latest standard version and has many excellent modern features that assist programmers in writing efficient, portable and maintainable programs that are useful for everything from ‘hard science’ to text processing.
The Fortran 2003 Handbook is the definitive and comprehensive guide to Fortran 2003, the latest standard version of Fortran. This all-inclusive volume offers a reader-friendly, easy-to-follow and informal description of Fortran 2003, and has been developed to provide not only a readable explanation of features, but also some rationale for the inclusion of features and their use. Experienced Fortran 95 programmers will be able to use this volume to assimilate quickly those features in Fortran 2003 that are not in Fortran 95 (Fortran 2003 contains all of the features of Fortran 95).

Young, pregnant, and recently widowed, Leigh finds herself on a deserted highway when her car breaks down. What were formerly minor labor pains increase, and she realizes she's about to deliver. When the mysterious and rugged Chad Dillon arrives in a derelict pickup, the desperate mother-to-be accepts his help, an act that sets the scene for romance. Overall, this is a disappointing story. Still, Joyce Bean handles gender changes with skill, credibly delivering even Chad's baritone. While Brown's depiction of the birth is idealized, Bean does her best to portray it with realism.

Dick Francis is one of those rare authors who can create a multitude of characters, changing characters from one novel to the next. This makes the stories stand-alone novels which can be read independently. That is a marked contrast to authors who write series of novels about the same character, a practice that often requires reading an entire series to understand the characters.
The present novel is not exactly a whodunit because you can identify the guilty parties (or most of them) early in the game. The main plot is how to track them down and bring them to justice. The chase runs from England to Australia to New Zealand then back to Australia. As usual with this author, there are horses and racing involved including, in this case, the Melbourne Cup. There is an interesting system for placing bets.
The main character, Charles Todd, is an artist who paints oil paintings of horses. There is some interesting side information about the chemical deterioration of oil paints on older paintings, an area where most people are probably not well informed. There is also considerable information about counterfeit paintings. Let the buyer beware. The death of his cousin Donald's wife during a burglary sets Todd on the chase. The main story is fast action over a couple weeks.

In this steamy Regency, the second in Laurens's new Bastion Club series (following The Lady Chosen), Lord Anthony Blake, a former spy for England, finds himself at loose ends after the fall of Napoleon. Genteel widow Alicia Carrington, who's in London to chaperone her younger sister, puts an end to Anthony's ennui when she stumbles upon a dead body at a soiree and he stumbles upon her at the same time. A mysterious villain seems determined to frame Alicia for the murder, but the real danger lies in the secret she's hiding from everyone-including Anthony, who quickly insinuates himself into her life. As in all of Laurens's romances, the love scenes are passionate, and chemistry hums between the pair. Alicia is a classic Laurens heroine: plucky and determined. Anthony is high-handed at times but not offensively so. Although the romantic tension relies heavily on a few unspoken words, it's entertaining to watch the baffled couple finally admit to their feelings. Unfortunately, the mystery subplot is less compelling, depending as it does on following a paper trail that offers up little drama. Still, Laurens's fans should be more than satisfied with this heady tale.

Dick Francis is best known for his horse-racing mysteries. After last year’s short story collection, Field of Thirteen, Francis is back with a full-length novel. Second Wind has hints of classic Francis -- secondary characters are owners or trainers -- but, in spite of the horse motif on the book cover, the main character is a BBC weatherman and the principal setting is a hurricane in the Caribbean. This departure from Francis’s usual form is not a complete success.
Perry Stuart is a physics Ph.D. and meteorologist on BBC television. He is devoted to his disabled grandmother. Perry and his friend, fellow weather broadcaster and amateur pilot, Kris Ironside, have always wanted to fly through a hurricane. After an outing to a horse training facility and a racetrack where Perry encounters various and sundry horsey types including the Darcys and the Fords, an opportunity arises to travel to Florida and perhaps fly through Odin, which has the potential of developing into a hurricane. His grandmother has the heebie-jeebies, which is usually an indication of danger, but Perry assures her there is almost no risk.

Instead of the usual annual novel that Francis's fans have come to expect, his most recent entry is a collection of short stories. Eight of the stories have been around the track before having been previously published in various magazines; five are young colts making their first showing in this anthology. There doesn't seem to be anything about horses and racing that Francis, a former steeplechase jockey, doesn't know. In Field of Thirteen he once again demonstrates there's more to horse racing than riding a horse.
All thirteen stories are written in the third person – a switch from Francis's usual first person point of view. All of the stories, of course, have some connection with horse racing, but that connection can be tenuous at best. Horse racing can be no more than an excuse for characters to meet. One of the stories is about a successful couple who have their revenge on the ungrateful daughter of their groom. Another is about the consequences of a horse doping. Another tracks the ramifications of the murder of a talented jockey. Another is about a crooked lawyer's scheme to defraud various associates of a horse broker.

Smuggling may be de rigueur for some along the Norfolk coast in 1815, but it isn't the usual activity of noble women. Not so for Kathryn "Kit" Cranmer--she yearns for adventure and excitement. Posing as a young boy, Kit is named leader of a ragtag gang of smugglers. Her wits and courage make her a natural leader. But the Norfolk coast is small, and smuggling provides the only lucrative means of support for most of the people who live there. As leader of her small band of smugglers, Kit finds herself pitted against Captain Jack, the head of a rival gang, when the groups compete for the same goods. Jack is infamous for his reputation, but Kit can't resist his charms and they enter into a love affair that is as tempestuous as the rocky coast on which their gangs fight.

High Stakes is a bit of a caper. Sort of a double switch when an inventor is taken for a ride by his trainer. As always the protagonist manages to fall in love and rallies in the cloak of the decent against the ravages of evil.
If you have not read a Francis before, I highly recommend him as an author. I remember putting him off for years thinking that they would be kind of hoaky, but they are not. Instead they are understated and quiet.

iPhone: The Missing Manual
As you'd expect of Apple, the iPhone is gorgeous. iPhone: The Missing Manual is a book as breathtaking as its subject. Teeming with high-quality color graphics, each custom designed page helps you accomplish specific tasks -- everything from Web browsing to watching videos. Written by New York Times columnist and Missing Manual series creator David Pogue, this book shows you how to get the most out of your new Apple iPhone.
The name iPhone may be doing Apple a disservice. This machine is so packed with possibilities that the cellphone may actually be the least interesting part. The iPhone is at least three products merged into one: a phone, a wide-screen iPod and a wireless, touch-screen Internet communicator. The iPhone's beauty alone may be enough for you to dig for your credit cards, but its Mac OS X-based software makes it not so much a smartphone as something out of the film "Minority Report."

Gathering from the title, one might be wondering what teacher I’m referring to. The title of this article comes from Luke 6:40. Jesus (PBUH) explicitly said that in order for anyone to be like him, they would have to be “perfect” as he was. Insha’Allah (SWT), we will examine the word “perfect” in this verse more in depth. First, we must understand that all prophets lived according to a certain way of life which was total submission to God’s Will. This means that whatever Laws, Rules, Regulations, etc., God sent to them, they abided by in 100% totality. Their message was very clear and in harmony with one another. This is also confirmed in the Qur’an.

As the director of the U.S. Army's Central Identification Lab in
Hawaii (CILHI), Robert Dean "Kel" McKelvey has made a career solving
some of the country's most complex identification cases. Though fast
approaching emotional meltdown, Kel now faces his thorniest case yet:
the recovery of Jimmie Carl Trimble, a soldier from Arkansas who died
a hero's death in Vietnam 40 years ago. When a rare DNA sequence
turns up at both the Army and FBI labs, it points to the unthinkable:
a link between Trimble and a 40-year-old, unsolved racial killing in
the Arkansas delta. Partnered uneasily with the volatile FBI Special
Agent Michael Levine, Kel must peel back decades of silence to reveal
a complex web of stolen identity, betrayal, patriotism, collusion,
and lies..................................

The Sword of Allah: Khalid bin Al-Waleed: Khalid bin Al-Waleed was one of the greatest generals in history, and one of the greatest heroes of Islam. Besides him, Genghis Khan was the only other general to remain undefeated in his entire military life. This book was written by the late Lieutenant-General A.I. Akram of the Pakistan Army, in October 1969. The author learnt Arabic in order to draw on the earliest historical sources and he visited every one of Khalid's battlefields in order to draw analyses from the viewpoint of military strategy, including reconciling conflicting historians' accounts. The book was originally published by the Army Education Press, Rawalpindi, Pakistan and printed by Feroze Sons Publishers in Lahore, Pakistan. The excellence of the book was such that it has been translated from English into Arabic and is currently sold in bookshops throughout the Arab World.
