In the Frame by Dick Francis (Audiobook)

Dick Francis is one of those rare authors who can create a multitude of characters, changing characters from one novel to the next. This makes the stories stand-alone novels which can be read independently. That is a marked contrast to authors who write series of novels about the same character, a practice that often requires reading an entire series to understand the characters.
The present novel is not exactly a whodunit because you can identify the guilty parties (or most of them) early in the game. The main plot is how to track them down and bring them to justice. The chase runs from England to Australia to New Zealand then back to Australia. As usual with this author, there are horses and racing involved including, in this case, the Melbourne Cup. There is an interesting system for placing bets.
The main character, Charles Todd, is an artist who paints oil paintings of horses. There is some interesting side information about the chemical deterioration of oil paints on older paintings, an area where most people are probably not well informed. There is also considerable information about counterfeit paintings. Let the buyer beware. The death of his cousin Donald's wife during a burglary sets Todd on the chase. The main story is fast action over a couple weeks.

In this steamy Regency, the second in Laurens's new Bastion Club series (following The Lady Chosen), Lord Anthony Blake, a former spy for England, finds himself at loose ends after the fall of Napoleon. Genteel widow Alicia Carrington, who's in London to chaperone her younger sister, puts an end to Anthony's ennui when she stumbles upon a dead body at a soiree and he stumbles upon her at the same time. A mysterious villain seems determined to frame Alicia for the murder, but the real danger lies in the secret she's hiding from everyone-including Anthony, who quickly insinuates himself into her life. As in all of Laurens's romances, the love scenes are passionate, and chemistry hums between the pair. Alicia is a classic Laurens heroine: plucky and determined. Anthony is high-handed at times but not offensively so. Although the romantic tension relies heavily on a few unspoken words, it's entertaining to watch the baffled couple finally admit to their feelings. Unfortunately, the mystery subplot is less compelling, depending as it does on following a paper trail that offers up little drama. Still, Laurens's fans should be more than satisfied with this heady tale.

Dick Francis is best known for his horse-racing mysteries. After last year’s short story collection, Field of Thirteen, Francis is back with a full-length novel. Second Wind has hints of classic Francis -- secondary characters are owners or trainers -- but, in spite of the horse motif on the book cover, the main character is a BBC weatherman and the principal setting is a hurricane in the Caribbean. This departure from Francis’s usual form is not a complete success.
Perry Stuart is a physics Ph.D. and meteorologist on BBC television. He is devoted to his disabled grandmother. Perry and his friend, fellow weather broadcaster and amateur pilot, Kris Ironside, have always wanted to fly through a hurricane. After an outing to a horse training facility and a racetrack where Perry encounters various and sundry horsey types including the Darcys and the Fords, an opportunity arises to travel to Florida and perhaps fly through Odin, which has the potential of developing into a hurricane. His grandmother has the heebie-jeebies, which is usually an indication of danger, but Perry assures her there is almost no risk.

Instead of the usual annual novel that Francis's fans have come to expect, his most recent entry is a collection of short stories. Eight of the stories have been around the track before having been previously published in various magazines; five are young colts making their first showing in this anthology. There doesn't seem to be anything about horses and racing that Francis, a former steeplechase jockey, doesn't know. In Field of Thirteen he once again demonstrates there's more to horse racing than riding a horse.
All thirteen stories are written in the third person – a switch from Francis's usual first person point of view. All of the stories, of course, have some connection with horse racing, but that connection can be tenuous at best. Horse racing can be no more than an excuse for characters to meet. One of the stories is about a successful couple who have their revenge on the ungrateful daughter of their groom. Another is about the consequences of a horse doping. Another tracks the ramifications of the murder of a talented jockey. Another is about a crooked lawyer's scheme to defraud various associates of a horse broker.

High Stakes is a bit of a caper. Sort of a double switch when an inventor is taken for a ride by his trainer. As always the protagonist manages to fall in love and rallies in the cloak of the decent against the ravages of evil.
If you have not read a Francis before, I highly recommend him as an author. I remember putting him off for years thinking that they would be kind of hoaky, but they are not. Instead they are understated and quiet.

Roberts' style is earthy, realistic, and makes for an entirely believable read. She has captured the rhythm of the Irish dialect and used it to great effectiveness. Maggie emerges as a thoroughly likable heroine, one with whom we can easily identify. She has several endearing faults, but she's honest with herself, and this made me respect her dilemma more than if she'd spent half the book wallowing in confusion.
There is a dandy subplot concerning the widowed mother and what to do with her, and those scenes serve to underscore Maggie's emotional turmoil and reluctance to fall in love. The secondary characters are spare and necessary; I have a feeling more than one of them will crop up in the other books of this trilogy.
Roberts did one thing with her character of Rogan that I really liked. Once he realizes he is in love with Maggie, about halfway through the book, he never looks back. No waffling, no resistance to the idea, just a full-steam-ahead campaign to win her over. Roberts wisely kept her major emotional conflict confined to one character and let us enjoy the ride. And what an enjoyable ride it is!

Nora Roberts' concluding novel in her Born In... trilogy won't disappoint readers who've been tantalized by the hero in the two previous books. Yes, it's Murphy, and yes, you'll fall more than a little in love with him yourself by the end of the book (or maybe even halfway through it).
Shannon Bodine, illegitimate half-sister to Maggie and Brianna of the first two books, is left alone in the world when her mother dies in the first chapter. With her last breath, the mother explains that Shannon was the product of a short but undying love affair with a married man (Thomas Concannon) while on a vacation in Ireland. Returning to America, the mother married Colin Bodine, whom Shannon had always believed to be her true father.
After burying her mother, Shannon is faced with the dilemma of whether or not to meet these heretofore unknown half-sisters. Intrigued, and more than a bit resentful, she travels to Ireland. There she finds a welcoming Brianna, a suspicious and hostile Maggie, and... Murphy Muldoon, a beloved neighbor and surrogate brother to the Concannon sisters.
Murphy is sort of an Irish Renaissance Man. A farmer, he's also a musician, poet, gardener, mechanic, and all-around studly guy. Shannon, being a high-flying advertising genius in a prestigious New York agency, can't imagine herself living the bucolic high life in Ireland. As she is drawn into the family rhythms of Brianna and Maggie, and as Murphy penetrates her emotional armor, Shannon's ideas about life and love start to crumble.

Nora Roberts takes us into the Irish mist with Born in Ice, but it's an interesting trip. This, the second book in her "Born In..." trilogy, offers us a slower, cooler, more restrained look at Irish life and love through the eyes of Brianna Concannon, younger sister of Maggie from Born in Fire.
Brianna is the proprietress of Blackthorne Cottage, a bed-and-breakfast establishment set up in her family home. Shrewish mother Maeve is now installed in her own house in town, and Maggie is married to Rogan Sweeney and expecting their first child. Brianna, known in the family as the "cool rose", longs for a family and children but is content to run her business and see to the comfort of others. Until the rainy night when American mystery writer Grayson Thane enters her cottage and her life, that is...
Gray has a few bitter memories of his own to deal with. Raised in foster homes, he has isolated himself from deep emotional entanglements and prefers to bury himself in his writing. Drawn to Brianna, he finds himself writing her into his latest novel, foil for a protagonist modeled after himself. The conflict in this book is in Gray and his unwillingness to admit his feelings for Brianna.
Familiar characters from the first novel pop up again, and the running subplot of the bitter mother is continued. Roberts also introduces a new subplot, a packet of mysterious letters addressed to the girls' dead father, which hint at an illicit affair and a half-sister in America (novel number three, no doubt).
Roberts is an expert at characterization through the spoken word rather than description. Her dialogue is tight as a tick and never sounds forced; you have to look hard to find a "she said". The Irish rhythms are skillfully woven through the dialog and the attention to detail made this reader feel as though she was right there, listening in.

This was my sole study guide for the MCSE Server 2003 based certification path, and I was not disappointed. The format is clear and easy to read. The books do a fantastic job of outlining WHY you are learning something, not just WHAT you need to know to pass the exam. I think this is what sets MS Press books apart from the competition: the book itself is structured to the best LEARNING format, and NOT to just passing the exam. I came away from these books with a much greater appreciation for Microsoft's Server and AD technologies (I come from a Linux background since 1995 and I'm the first to knock MS), and these books will be on your reference shelf for years to come -- or at least until the next version of Server ships.
