The Mathematical Theory of the Top

The Mathematical Theory of the Top (Phoenix Edition)
Publisher: Dover Publications | Pages: 80 | 2004-06-10 | ISBN: 0486495825 | DJVU | 2 MB

Product Description:

This collection of essays by a distinguished mathematician and teacher examines important issues of dynamics from the viewpoint of the theory of functions of the complex variable. Based on a series of lectures delivered by Felix Klein in conjunction with Princeton University’s 150th anniversary, these presentations center on the problem inherent in the motion of a top—that is, a rigid body rotating about an axis—when a single point in this axis other than the center of gravity is fixed in position. The contents of this volume render discussions of dynamics-related issues simpler, more attractive, and relevant not only to mathematicians but also to engineers, physicists, and astronomers. Unabridged republication of the classic 1897 edition.

Structure Of Metals

Structure Of Metals
Publisher:Horney Press | Pages:580 | 2007-03-15 | ISBN: 1406772135 | DJVU | 20 MB

Product Description:

Structure of Metals GRYSTALLOGRAPHIG METHODS, PRINCIPLES, AND - DATA BY CHARLES H. BARRETT, PH. D. Associate Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Member of Staff of the Metals Research Laboratory Carnegie Institute of Technology FIRST EDITION F 1 FT 1 1 I M PRESS ION MoGBAW-HILL BOOK COMPANY, INC. NEW YORK AND LONDON 1943 STRUCTURE OF MKTALS COPYRIGHT. 1943, BY THE MrGRAW-HiLL BOOK COMPANY, INC. PRINTED IK THB UNITED STATES OF AMERICA All rights reserved. This book, or parts thereof, may not be reproduced in any form without permission of the publishers. PREFACE This book is intended to serve both as a text and as a reference book. The portions intended for classroom use have been written for courses in crystallography, particularly the courses offered to students of metallurgy. It is primarily intended for graduate courses, but a number of chapters are at a level appropriate for advanced undergraduate courses in applied x-rays, crystallography, and physical metallurgy Chaps. I to IV, IX to XI, XIII. In an effort to make the book more readable, certain advanced topics on x-ray diffraction and various tables of data have been placed in appendixes, and laboratory manipulations that would not interest the general reader have been printed in smaller type. The first four chapters of this book explain the fundamentals of crystal lattices and projections, and the general principles of the diffrac tion of x-rays from Crystals. Chapters V to VII cover the technique of x-ray diffraction, presenting the operating details of the methods that are in common use. Several chapters are included on the applica tions of x-ray diffraction in the field of physical metallurgy, covering techniques for determining constitution diagrams, identifying unknown materials, determining crystal structures, determining the orientation of single crystals, detecting and analyzing preferred orientations, and measuring stresses. One chapter is devoted to electron diffraction, its metallurgical uses, and the precautions to be observed in interpreting electron diffrac tion data. The electron microscope receives only a brief mention because at the time the manuscript was written the metallographic technique for this instrument was still being rapidly developed and, except for particle-size determinations, the instrument had not yet achieved the status of a widely accepted tool in metallographic or crystallographic research. The last half of the book is devoted to the results of research and contains extensive reviews of fields that are of current interest. In assembling these summaries, an effort has been made to include an ade quate number of references to the literature, to cover thoroughly the subjects that have not been extensively reviewed in readily available publications, and to maintain a critical but unbiased attitude toward the data and conclusions that are reviewed. The subjects treated include the following principles governing the crystal structure of metals and vi PREPACK alloys supcrlattices and their effect on properties imperfections in crystals the structure of liquid metals the processes of slip, twinning, and fracture and modern theories of these processes, including the cur rent dislocation theory the effects of cold work and annealing on the structure of metals, including the effects on diffraction patterns of static and fatigue stressing, rolling, grinding, and polishing the results of x-ray studies of internal stresses preferred orientations resulting from cold work, hot work, recrystallization, freezing, electrodeposition, evapora tion, and sputtering directionality in commercial products and in single crystals and its relation to crystal orientation. The author is indebted to many colleagues and graduate students who have assisted directly and indirectly in the preparation of this book. He particularly wishes to thank Dr. R. F…

General Principles of Quantum Mechanics

General Principles of Quantum Mechanics
Publisher: Springer -Verlag| Pages: 212 | Date: 1980 | ISBN 3540098429 | Djvu | 5 mb

Summary: …And still running
Rating: 5

I will be bold:there are three outstanding books to which we can recur for a really deep question in Quantum Mechanics:Dirac’s “Principles…”, Kramers’ “Quantum Mechanics” and Pauli’s “General Principles of Quantum Mechanics”. I will perhaps astonish you by saying that, of the three, Pauli’s is the most authoritative. This matches the fact that Wolfgang Pauli was, for many decades, “the conscience of Physics”, the oracle, we could say, were it not for the fact that he spoke a very direct language. One went to Pauli to know his reaction to one’s “genial” idea. More often than not he demolished the thing. This happened to luminaries like Victor Weisskopf, Uhlenbeck and Gousmit and, yes, Heisenberg! It’s a slim book. Actually it first appeared as a chapter of the famous Handbuch der Physik, in German, of course. The translation is fine, but a little IS lost of the author’s style. It is an advanced book. You should read it after some good textbook, like Liboff or Griffiths. It will give you organization and perspective. But even if you read Landau’s (and Lifshitz’) “Quantum Mechanics”, you would take profit of it. For you could compare two great masters in action. Pauli’s treatment of Dirac equation is superb, and became the standard, including the notation. This is a classic. The very fact that it is still being sold gives me hope.

Pauli General Principles of Quantum Mechanics - Translated by P. Achuthan and K. Venkatesan

Only about seven years after quantum mechanics obtained its final form W. Pauli, himself one of the most active and most critical pioneers of the new theory, wrote this classic. He revised it in 1958 for the Enclyclopedia of Physics and it was this version from which this translation was made. More than any other book on quantum mechanics this text works out its foundations, which explains the continuing interest of the physics community in this book. For their historical value the translators included also the sections on quantum electrodynamics from the 1933 edition.

The original German edition of this work was published under the title : Handbuch der Physik, Vol.5 Part 1 : Prinzipen der Quantentheorie I, 1958

The tenth chapter of this book is translated from Part B, Sections 6-8 of Pauli’s article in : Handbuch der Physik, Vol.24, Part 1, 1933, edited by H. Geiger and K. Scheel.

Fundamental Formulas of Physics

Fundamental Formulas of Physics, Vol. 1 and Vol 2
Publisher: Dover Publications | Pages: 407 | 1960-06-01 | ISBN: 0486605957 | DJVU | 7 MB

Well written descriptions; and well thought-out examples are given when needed. I have both volumes and they have been a great resource to me while developing Modelling Software. Multiple Author’s contributions have resulted in a little overlapping, but there was one benefit to this
- seeing adapted forms of the same formula. I also like the book: “The Cambridge Handbook of Physics Formulas (230 pages)” which is 40 years newer. But have found myself referring this two-volume-set the most recently (totaling 741 pages) because: more fields & cross-fields are covered, great examples, smaller hand-held size, jammed packed prerequisite math formulas & data (153 pages) in first four chapters including: Pre/Post Calculus, Fourier Series, Green Function, Vectors, Tensors, etc. (good brush up - been out of college few years) Also locating a particular formula is quick because of the Large Detailed Split-page Contents at beginning of both volumes (20 pages each) and also helpful - chapter names are printed on both covers.

Fundamental Formulas of Physics Volume One
Page 1 to Page 364. (Chapter 1 to Chapter 15)
(1) Basic Mathematical Formulas (2) Statistics (3) Nomograms
(4) Physical Constants (5) Classical Mechanics (6) Special Theory of Relatetivity (7) The General Theory of Relatetivity
(8) Hydrodynamics and Aerodynamics (9) Boundary Value Problems in Mathematical Physics
(10) Heat and Thermodynamics (11) Statistics Mechanics
(12) Kinetic Theory of Gases: Viscosity, Thermal Conduction, and diffusion
(13) Electromagnetic Theory (14) Electronics (15) Sound and Acoustics

Fundamental Formulas of Physics Volume Two
Page 365 to Page 741. (Chapter 16 to Chapter 31)
(16) Geometrical Optics (17) Physical Optics (18) Electron Optics
(19) Atomic Spectra (20) Molecular Spectra (21) Quantum Mechanics
(22) Nuclear Theory (23) Cosmic Rays and High-Energy Phenomena
(24) Particle Accelerators (25) Solid State (26) The Theory of Magnetism
(27) Physical Chemistry (28) Basic Formulas of Astrophysics
(29) Celestial Mechanics (30) Meteorology (31) Biophysics

AS OF THIS WRITING: Volume Two doesn’t show up in all AMAZON search results. But Volume Two does have it’s own AMAZON PAGE: From Volume One Page look for “other editions” or “also available in (paperback or any option given)” Or Type the exact phase “Fundamental Formulas of Physics, Vol. 2″ and you will go directly to it.
