Theory And Practice
632 pages | 2007-02-14 | PDF | 24,6 MB
The book deals with the MOS Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) models that are derived from basic semiconductor theory. Various models are developed, ranging from simple to more sophisticated models that take into account new physical effects observed in submicron transistors used in today's (1993) MOS VLSI technology. The assumptions used to arrive at the models are emphasized so that the accuracy of the models in describing the device characteristics are clearly understood. Due to the importance of designing reliable circuits, device reliability models are also covered. Understanding these models is essential when designing circuits for state-of-the-art MOS ICs.

Measure Theory, Integration, and Hilbert Spaces
392 pages | 2005-03-14 | PDF | 1,9 MB
Real Analysis is the third volume in the Princeton Lectures in Analysis, a series of four textbooks that aim to present, in an integrated manner, the core areas of analysis. Here the focus is on the development of measure and integration theory, differentiation and integration, Hilbert spaces, and Hausdorff measure and fractals. This book reflects the objective of the series as a whole: to make plain the organic unity that exists between the various parts of the subject, and to illustrate the wide applicability of ideas of analysis to other fields of mathematics and science.
After setting forth the basic facts of measure theory, Lebesgue integration, and differentiation on Euclidian spaces, the authors move to the elements of Hilbert space, via the L2 theory. They next present basic illustrations of these concepts from Fourier analysis, partial differential equations, and complex analysis. The final part of the book introduces the reader to the fascinating subject of fractional-dimensional sets, including Hausdorff measure, self-replicating sets, space-filling curves, and Besicovitch sets. Each chapter has a series of exercises, from the relatively easy to the more complex, that are tied directly to the text. A substantial number of hints encourage the reader to take on even the more challenging exercises.
As with the other volumes in the series, Real Analysis is accessible to students interested in such diverse disciplines as mathematics, physics, engineering, and finance, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Complex Analysis
Princeton University Press | 2003-04-07 | 392 pages | PDF | 2,5 MB
With this second volume, we enter the intriguing world of complex analysis. From the first theorems on, the elegance and sweep of the results is evident. The starting point is the simple idea of extending a function initially given for real values of the argument to one that is defined when the argument is complex. From there, one proceeds to the main properties of holomorphic functions, whose proofs are generally short and quite illuminating: the Cauchy theorems, residues, analytic continuation, the argument principle.
With this background, the reader is ready to learn a wealth of additional material connecting the subject with other areas of mathematics: the Fourier transform treated by contour integration, the zeta function and the prime number theorem, and an introduction to elliptic functions culminating in their application to combinatorics and number theory.

Spatial Analysis and GIS
296 pages | CRC | PDF | 1,1 MB
Geographic information systems represent an exciting and rapidly expanding technology via which spatial data may be captured, stored, retrieved, displayed, manipulated and analyzed. Applications of this technology include detailed inventories of land use parcels. Spatial patterns of disease, geodemographics, environmental management and macroscale inventories of global resources. The impetus for this book is the relative lack of research into the integration of spatial analysis and GIS, and the potential benefits in developing such an integration. From a GIS perspective, there is an increasing demand for systems that do something other than display and organize data. From a spatial analytical perspective, there are advantages to linking statistical methods and mathematical models to the database and display capabilities of a GIS. Although the GIS may not be absolutely necessary for spatial analysis, it can facilitate such an analysis and moreover provide insights that might otherwise have been missed. The contributions to the book tell us where we are and where we ought to be going. They suggest that the integration of spatial analysis and GIS will stimulate interest in quantitative spatial science, particularly exploratory and visual types of analysis. They represent a unique statement of the state-of-the-art issues in integration and interface.

The subject of relational databases is brought to life by the writing style and the inclusion of an homogenous case study that reinforces the issues dealt with in each chapter. A Web site supports the book with a 'didactic' database management system (LEAP).

Alternative Treatment for Cancer (NEW)
Cancer treatment has enjoyed half a century of healthy development, relying mainly on surgery, cytotoxic therapy and radiation. Achievements and successes are well reflected in the longer survival period and better quality of life. Nonetheless, cancer still spreads locally, recurs, metastasizes and remains one of the top killers.

Instead of concentrating on cancer removal, it has become obvious that supportive measures are also important. These include the means to improve quality of life during treatment and to contain tumor growth. To this end, herbal medicine appears to offer holistic support via as yet unknown pathways. This volume reveals the practice of cancer treatment using herbs from all over the world, including China, India and Japan. It provides comprehensive information about the herbs commonly used, the logic of using the herbs, some of the mechanisms of action and other means of palliative treatment. While cancer victims have a thirst for choosing their own supplementary treatment, health providers have a duty to explain to them the justifications and the options.

Myths, Reality and Ways Forward
What are the main factors and circumstances that give rise to terrorism? This is a question commonly addressed in political discourse on terrorism and is considered an alternative to dealing with terrorism through military force. However, there have been surprisingly few attempts to analyze the causes of terrorism in a book format. Root Causes of Terrorism is one of the first to provide a detailed account of the motivations behind terrorism. The questions raised include:

· What are the main factors and circumstances that give rise to various forms of terrorism?
· What factors provide the preconditions for the emergence of various types of terrorism?
· What are the typical precipitants for terrorist acts?
· To what extent is it possible to reduce the problem of terrorism by influencing these root causes?
· Is it possible to identify root causes in advance of an attack?
· Should we address those factors that sustain terrorist campaigns rather than root

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics
300 pages | Prentice Hall | PDF | 1,2 MB
This book addresses the needs of new users of CFD programs.
After the introduction there is a description of some aspects of fluid flow, written specifically for the non-specialist, together with a look at some of the equations that need to be modelled.
The discussion concentrates on flows which are viscous and incompressible, as most of the CFD packages solve this type of flow. The ways in which the governing equations are translated into a form suitable for solution by computer is then described. Having looked at this the CFD analysis process can be determined together with some information about the software and hardware that will be required. Then each stage of the analysis process is discussed in turn, followed by a chapter where three examples of the analysis process are given. These are realistic problems which have been solved using two commercially available CFD software packages. This completes the core of the material, but as other flow types are met in practice some extensions to the basic analysis process are discussed that enable these flow types to be modelled. Then, finally, there is a review of how the necessary hardware and software can be specified. This looks at the features that might be considered together with a discusion of how the whole process can be used to influence engineering design.

An introduction to object-oriented concepts for developers looking to master modern application practices.
Object-oriented programming (OOP) is the foundation of modern programming languages, including C++, Java, C#, and Visual Basic .NET. By designing with objects rather than treating the code and data as separate entities, OOP allows objects to fully utilize other objects; services as well as inherit their functionality. OOP promotes code portability and reuse, but requires a shift in thinking to be fully understood. Before jumping into the world of object-oriented programming languages, you must first master The Object-Oriented Thought Process.

His Rise and Fall
Insightful, penetrating, and shocking, the defining
biography of Iraq's deposed tyrant

Drawing on an unparalleled network of sources, contacts, and firsthand testimonies, Con Coughlin takes us to the center of Saddam Hussein's complex, bewildering regime — and beyond. Fully updated and revised, Saddam: His Rise and Fall meticulously describes how Hussein took power and immediately set about controlling every aspect of Iraqi life.

Coughlin examines Hussein's regime both before and after its fall, exploring the contradictions of Saddam's private life: his sponsoring of Islamic fundamentalism while whiskey drinking and womanizing as well as his reliance on and celebration of family negated by his violent and temperamental treatment of them. With evidence from family members, servants, and staff, "Saddam: His Rise and Fall" is unique in its close-up representation of this elusive and secretive world.

In all-new chapters and an epilogue, and with shocking new disclosures, Coughlin also vividly recounts the last few months of Saddam's reign and his eventual capture by American forces.

Scientific American Special Edition - The Secret Lives of Stars
Publisher: Scientific American, Inc
Languange: English
Number of Pages: 100
PDF: 3.26 MB
ISSN: 0036-8733

Scientific American is a popular-science magazine, published (first weekly and later monthly) since August 28, 1845, making it the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States. It brings articles about new and innovative research to the amateur and lay audience.
For working scientists, especially in high-tech fields, there are only a few crucial nonjournal periodicals to pore over faithfully, and Scientific American is one of them--its timely and technical features on everything from paleoarchaeology to neural nets set it apart from popular science magazines like Discover. Scientific American emphasizes a wide variety of emerging technologies, giving scientists a chance to keep up in an increasingly specialized professional world. Innovative and controversial developments such as gene patenting and the latest from the unified field gurus are front and center in every issue. It's not all business, though--regular features like Michael Shermer's "Skeptic" column, enticing book reviews, brain-busting puzzles, and James Burke's intellectual-historical meanderings add browsability to this enduring magazine, in business reporting the frontiers of scientific exploration for more than 150 years.

The Spook Book
Author: Mick Tyner
Publisher: Trentland Press (March 1989)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 094040172X
ISBN-13: 978-0940401723

This text treats a number of topics, many harmless, others extremely dangerous, at least to carry out, not to read about, and that meets the author's intent: to provide something lively to read. He states here, and repeats throughout, that he recommends absolutely no hazardous or illegal activity to anyone. Human nature includes in its repertoire the capacity for vicarious experience. We may read a murder-mystery laced with killings, robbery, torture, kinky sex, and pigging out on chocolate-and relish every page. Yet no sane person would actually wallow in those perversions, especially not thick indulgence in dark candy.

Tom Clancy - the sum of all fear (AUDIO BOOK)
The Sum of All Fears is the best-selling thriller novel by Tom Clancy, and part of the Jack Ryan series. It was the fourth book of the series to be turned into a film.

An interesting note is that this book was released just days before the Moscow uprising in 1991, which finally signaled the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Russian politics in the aftermath of the destruction of the Berlin Wall is a main element of the book.

The plot begins in 1973, during the Yom Kippur War; moves to 1991 when A small group of Muslim extremist terrorists from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine are not pleased though. With a lasting peace looming around the corner and the state of Israel still in existence, they are looking at a failure in their campaign. Their anger is directed towards the U.S. which has supported Israel throughout the years and now is instrumental in creating a lasting peace that makes it impossible to eradicate the Jewish state.

The book ends with the terrorists being executed by beheading in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Ryan being presented an ancient sword held by the Saudi royal family.

The Broker (PDF+AUDIO)
It is a suspense novel written by American author John Grisham published in the United States on January 11, 2005. The novel follows the story of Joel Backman, a newly-pardoned prisoner who had tried to broker a deal to give the world's most powerful satellite surveillance system to the highest bidder.

The book has been hailed by some critics as a return to form for Grisham, while others lament it as a mere "trip to Italy" put into fiction form. A New York Times book review claimed that the description of an outgoing president who was "an idiot...but a clean one" seemed to be referring to President Bush, or perhaps to Bill Clinton's infamous last-minute presidential pardons in 2001. Nevertheless, The Broker made number one on the New York Times Best Seller list.

In the waning days of his failed four-year term as President of the United States, Arthur Morgan is performing those final duties associated with leaving office. Among those chores are reviewing requests for presidential pardons. The Director of the CIA makes a rare visit to the White House to suggest that Joel Backman, a former powerful Washington Beltway lobbyist who has spent six years in prison, be released. The President accedes to the wishes of the Director, and Backman finds himself hurriedly whisked from the prison and relocated in Italy (first in Treviso, then in Bologna) under an assumed name.

The God DELUTION
The God Delusion is a 2006 bestselling non-fiction book by British biologist Richard Dawkins, holder of the Charles Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford.

In The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that belief in a personal god qualifies as a delusion, which he defines as a persistent false belief held in the face of strong contradictory evidence. He is sympathetic to Robert Pirsig's observation in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance that "when one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion."
As of November 2007, the English version of The God Delusion had sold over 1.5 million copies and had been translated to 31 other languages. It was ranked #2 on the Amazon.com bestsellers' list in November 2006.In early December 2006, it reached #4 in the New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction Best Seller list after nine weeks on the listIt remained on the list for 51 weeks until September 30, 2007. It has attracted widespread commentary, with several books written in response..

A Guide to Intelligent Systems (2nd Edition)
440 pages | 2004-11-12 | PDF | 10,4 MB
Artificial Intelligence is one of the most rapidly evolving subjects within the computing/engineering curriculum, with an emphasis on creating practical applications from hybrid techniques. Despite this, the traditional textbooks continue to expect mathematical and programming expertise beyond the scope of current undergraduates and focus on areas not relevant to many of today's courses. Negnevitsky shows students how to build intelligent systems drawing on techniques from knowledge-based systems, neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation and now also intelligent agents. The principles behind these techniques are explained without resorting to complex mathematics, showing how the various techniques are implemented, when they are useful and when they are not. No particular programming language is assumed and the book does not tie itself to any of the software tools available. However, available tools and their uses will be described and program examples will be given in Java. The lack of assumed prior knowledge makes this book ideal for any introductory courses in artificial intelligence or intelligent systems design, while the contemporary coverage means more advanced students will benefit by discovering the latest state-of-the-art techniques.

Consciousness Explained
528 pages | 2002 | Djvu | 4,1 MB
Consciousness is notoriously difficult to explain. On one hand, there are facts about conscious experience--the way clarinets sound, the way lemonade tastes--that we know subjectively, from the inside. On the other hand, such facts are not readily accommodated in the objective world described by science. How, after all, could the reediness of clarinets or the tartness of lemonade be predicted in advance? Central to Daniel C. Dennett's attempt to resolve this dilemma is the "heterophenomenological" method, which treats reports of introspection nontraditionally--not as evidence to be used in explaining consciousness, but as data to be explained. Using this method, Dennett argues against the myth of the Cartesian theater--the idea that consciousness can be precisely located in space or in time. To replace the Cartesian theater, he introduces his own multiple drafts model of consciousness, in which the mind is a bubbling congeries of unsupervised parallel processing. Finally, Dennett tackles the conventional philosophical questions about consciousness, taking issue not only with the traditional answers but also with the traditional methodology by which they were reached.Dennett's writing, while always serious, is never solemn; who would have thought that combining philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience could be such fun? Not every reader will be convinced that Dennett has succeeded in explaining consciousness; many will feel that his account fails to capture essential features of conscious experience. But none will want to deny that the attempt was well worth making. --Glenn Branch

ISSN: 0741-8647

Many magazines devoted to Macintosh computing have come and gone over the years, but Macworld has aged gracefully and become the premier resource for news, reviews, tips, and chatter for the Apple crowd. But far from being a stale grande dame, Macworld continues to pepper its articles and monthly columns by Andy Ihnatko and Christopher Breen with zest, humor, and unbiased viewpoints. The magazine also regularly attracts some of the best writers in the Mac universe, including Photoshop and prepress wizard Bruce Fraser, Quark guru David Blatner, and Adam Engst, editor of the popular TidBits e-newsletter. Their insight and invaluable step-by-step tips help you get the most out of your Mac. But Macworld's bread and butter comes from its heaping helping of reviews on the latest hardware systems, software, monitors, add-on gadgets, and more. They cut to the chase without a lot of fluff, offering review summaries with pros and cons, buying advice, and a rating scale of one to five mice (computer mice, that is).
