After reading through this book, I have decided to destroy it rather than donate it to the local library.
The amount of misinformation included here is almost dangerous in its scope. About half way through the book I realized that the inconsistencies would be obvious even to someone not experienced with computer technology

The preface is dedicated to MCSE instead of A+ exams.

On page 194 he claims that the original Pentiums

The book is riddled with this kind technical inaccuracy, making it unusable.

Sure, some of the information is useful - but what is the point of even trying to use it, if you have to double-check everything with another source because you can’t trust the author?

The next A+ book I read, I hope the author gets the FACTS right.. include 16KB L1 Cache. On page 195, he claims they support up to 512KB L1 Cache.

Summary: I have to agree that this book is very poor
Rating: 1

I, too, starting working on computerscomputer review

Certainly news to me, and Intel, that the Pentium III is available in Socket 478CPUS

That’s just an example from Chapter 1. Applying UML: Advanced Applications
Posted: March 10th, 2008, 5:57pm CET
Tags  [edit]

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose notation language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a programmer defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure.
Applying UML addresses the practical issues faced by users in adopting UML. As the title suggests, it helps the reader in actually applying UML to real life situations, rather than just in learning the language. The book covers in depth detail of UML, including notation on profiles and extensions. The scope of the book assumes prior experience in software engineering and/or business modeling, an understanding of object-oriented concepts and a basic knowledge of UML.

* Case study driven approach covering a wide range of issues
* Contains advanced tutorial material to aid learning
* Focuses on practical issues in the application of UML

The Ruby Programming Language is the authoritative guide to Ruby and provides comprehensive coverage of versions 1.8 and 1.9 of the language. It was written (and illustrated!) by an all-star team: David Flanagan, bestselling author of programming language “bibles” (including JavaScript: The Definitive Guide and Java in a Nutshell) and committer to the Ruby Subversion repository. Yukihiro “Matz” Matsumoto, creator, designer and lead developer of Ruby and author of Ruby in a Nutshell, which has been expanded and revised to become this book. why the lucky stiff, artist and Ruby programmer extraordinaire. This book begins with a quick-start tutorial to the language, and then explains the language in detail from the bottom up: from lexical and syntactic structure to datatypes to expressions and statements and on through methods, blocks, lambdas, closures, classes and modules. The book also includes a long and thorough introduction to the rich API of the Ruby platform, demonstrating — with heavily-commented example code — Ruby’s facilities for text processing, numeric manipulation, collections, input/output, networking, and concurrency. An entire chapter is devoted to Ruby’s metaprogramming capabilities. The Ruby Programming Language documents the Ruby language definitively but without the formality of a language specification. It is written for experienced programmers who are new to Ruby, and for current Ruby programmers who want to challenge their understanding and increase their mastery of the language.

All of the essays in the series' eighth year exhibit a timeless prose in the midst of meeting deadlines. But many also resonate with a special sense of timeliness, such as the insightful Rules of Engagement by William Langewiesche, a detailed study for Vanity Fair of the U.S. massacre of Iraqi citizens in the town of Haditha. Other essays have a similar sense of urgency: Inside Scientology by Janet Reitman for Rolling Stone—the result of a nine-month investigation—is a terrific and balanced look at an organization whose top leaders assert that false ideas, including the concepts of God, Christ, and organized religion, date back 75 million years to the work of an evil galactic warrior named Xenu. C.J. Chivers's The School for Esquire is a harrowing account of the three-day siege by Chechen terrorists of a grammar school in the Russian town of Beslan.

Review
`this important and exciting work breaks completely new ground ... a masterly examination of Russell's work up to 1913 ... Hylton provides a superb account of how Russell's responses to the difficulties of Platonic Atomism have shaped so much of analytic philosophy ' Heythrop Journal

`It presents clearly and defends cogently a number of detailed, scholarly and sensitive readings of Russell's earlier philosophical works.' Times Literary Supplement

`the overall conception and achievement is extraordinary. Hylton's book provides an exemplary contribution of scholarship, lucidity, and imagination. He sets a new standard for all subsequent discussions of Russell's philosophy' Journal of Philosophy

`When such an author, who also writes as clearly and lays out his arguments as straightforwardly as Hylton does, ... it is something from which I can benefit.' History and Philosophy of Logic

'this important and exciting work breaks completely new ground ... a masterly examination of Russell's work up to 1913 ... Hylton provides a superb account of how Russell's responses to the difficulties of Platonic Atomism have shaped so much of analytic philosophy' James Bradley, The Memorial University of Newfoundland, The Heythrop Journal, April 1993, Volume 34, Number 2

`This is a wonderful example of an emerging genre ... Helpfully, Hylton's treatment is both sympathetic enough to help us see how Russell could have been attracted to idealism and critical enough to make the later reaction against if plausible ... Hylton ... wisely focuses on those aspects that are most helpful to the intended audience - philosophers ... In this Hylton is plainly doing philosophy, and the entrenched distinction between doing philosophy and reporting it as history breaks down. There are many ways to do philosophy and many ways to convey its history. Here is one way to do them both - and to do them both well.' The Philosophical Review

Persecution: How Liberals are Waging War Against Christians
Posted: May 23rd, 2008, 3:38am CEST by Suman
Tags  [edit]

They may not get thrown to the lions any more, but today's Christians endure subtler forms of martyrdom, argues this strident manifesto. Limbaugh (Absolute Power: The Legacy of Corruption in the Clinton-Reno Justice Department) recites a litany of abuses and insults perpetrated, he claims, by separation-of-church-and-state absolutists and the forces of secular humanism. Most of them are familiar complaints of the Christian Right: school children are forbidden to pray before football games; nativity scenes are banned from municipal property; the media ridicule Christian politicians, and Hollywood caricatures Christians as Bible-thumping yahoos or axe-wielding fanatics. At universities where Darwinism, relativism and "sexuality studies" hold sway, Limbaugh says, vocal Christians get packed off to the psych ward. Most insidiously, Christians are continually subjected to sensitivity training-which often promotes a "homosexual agenda"-and silenced when they object. Many of the cases Limbaugh cites raise legitimate questions about society's hypersensitivity to religious expression (although the really serious abuses were often remedied after the inevitable lawsuit). Unfortunately, he tends to equate political controversy with religious bigotry, and Christianity with fundamentalism. Many of the issues he cites, like Democratic opposition to pro-life judicial nominees, or laws requiring Catholic employers to cover contraceptives in health insurance, amount to political disputes pitting conservatives like Limbaugh against liberals, feminists, gays or users of contraceptives, with Christians ranged on both sides. Limbaugh has a point: there are anti-Christian tendencies-rigid school bureaucrats, militant atheists and an often profane and irreligious popular culture-in American society. But there are plenty of pro-Christian tendencies too, such that Limbaugh's persecution complex seems overblown.

Turing Machines with Sublogarithmic Space

Andrzej Szepietowski “Turing Machines with Sublogarithmic Space "
Springer | 1994-09-29 | ISBN: 3540583556 | 115 pages | PDF | 5,8 Mb

This comprehensive monograph investigates the computational power of Turing machines with sublogarithmic space. The studies are devoted to the Turing machine model introduced by Stearns, Hartmanis, and Lewis (1965) with a two-way read-only input tape and a separate two-way read-write work tape. The book presents the key results on space complexity, also as regards the classes of languages acceptable, under the perspective of a sublogarithmic number of cells used during computation. It originates from courses given by the author at the Technical University of Gdansk and Gdansk University in 1991 and 1992. It was finalized in 1994 when the author visited Paderborn University and includes the most recent contributions to the field.

Designing Information Technology in the Postmodern Age: From Method to Metaphor

From Method to Metaphor

Richard Coyne “Designing Information Technology in the Postmodern Age: From Method to Metaphor"
The MIT Press | 1995-09-28 | ISBN:0262032287 | PDF | 408 pages | 1,8 Mb

Designing Information Technology in the Postmodern Age puts the theoretical discussion of computer systems and information technology on a new footing. Shifting the discourse from its usual rationalistic framework, Richard Coyne shows how the conception, development, and application of computer systems is challenged and enhanced by postmodern philosophical thought. He places particular emphasis on the theory of metaphor, showing how it has more to offer than notions of method and models appropriated from science.
Coyne examines the entire range of contemporary philosophical thinking -- including logical positivism, analytic philosophy, pragmatism, phenomenology, critical theory, hermeneutics, and deconstruction -- comparing them and showing how they differ in their consequences for design and development issues in electronic communications, computer representation, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and multimedia. He also probes the claims made of information technology, including its presumptions of control, its so-called radicality, even its ability to make virtual worlds, and shows that many of these claims are poorly founded.
Among the writings Coyne visits are works by Heidegger, Adorno, Benjamin, Gadamer, Derrida, Habermas, Rorty, and Foucault. He relates their views to information technology designers and critics such as Herbert Simon, Alan Kay, Terry Winograd, Hubert Dreyfus, and Joseph Weizenbaum. In particular, Coyne draws extensively from the writing of Martin Heidegger, who has presented one of the most radical critiques of technology to date.

Computation Structures (MIT Electrical Engineering & Computer Science) By SA Ward
Publisher: MIT Press 1999 | 811 Pages | ISBN: 0262231395 | PDF | 83 MB

Developed as the text for the basic computer architecture course at MIT, this book integrates a thorough coverage of digital logic design with a comprehensive presentation of computer architecture. It spans the entire range of topics from analog circuit design to operating systems. The authors seek to demystify the construction of computing hardware by illustrating systematically how it is built up from digital circuits through higher-level components to processors and memories, and how its design is affected by its intended uses. “Computation Structures” is unusually broad in scope, considering many real-world problems and trade-off decisions faced by practicing engineers. These difficult choices are confronted and given careful attention throughout the book. Topics addressed include the digital abstraction; digital representations and notation; combinational devices and circuits; sequence and state; synthesis of digital systems; finite state machines; control structures and disciplines; performance measures and trade offs; communication; interpretation; micro-interpreter architecture; microprogramming and microcode; single sequence machines; stack architectures; register architectures; reduced instruction set computers; memory architectures; processes and processor multiplexing; process synchronization; interrupts, priorities, and real time; directions and trends.

Fire the Phone Company : A Handy Guide to Voice Over IP
Peachpit Press | November 13, 2005 | ISBN: 0321384865 | 200 pages | CHM | 5.1 MB

Longing to break free from the phone company’s tethers? This is the place to start! Realizing that VoIP is still just an acronym to many (and an intimidating one at that), author Dave Field speaks squarely to you, the consumer, demonstrating that you don’t have to be a technologist to start achieving significant savings through Internet phone services.

Keeping acronyms to a minimum, introducing important terms in sidebars, and using anecdotal accounts of real-world installations to personalize the subject, this guide provides everything you need to know to evaluate, select, and install VoIP systems.

Klaus Chantelau, René Brothuhn, “Multimediale Client-Server-Systeme”
Springer | 2009 | ISBN: 3540797483 | 357 pages | PDF | 10,2 MB

Multimediale Client-Server-Anwendungen (insbesondere sog.

Solaris(TM) Internals: Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Kernel Architecture (2nd Edition) (Solaris Series)
Prentice Hall Ptr | 2006-07-10 | ISBN: 0131482092 | 1072 pages | CHM | 6 MB

Well written and detailed. If you wish or need to know about the internals of Solaris this book is the source. This is a second edition and covers 10 and updates information on 8 and 9. The first edition covered 2.5.1, 2.6, and 7. I liked the first edition and waited for this edition based on the books/authors web site and have not be disappointed. Highly recommended, a reasonable background in OS theory is helpful with the type of material covered here - but not required - it will aid in understanding however. Recommended more general OS books would include “Operating System Concepts” by A. Silberschutz, J. Peterson, P. Galvin, “Operating Sytstems” by A. Tanenbaum, A. Woodhull, and “Unix Internals” by Uresh Vahalia among others.

Foundation PHP for Flash
Friends of Ed; 1st edition | ISBN:1903450160 | 500 pages | September 2001 | PDF | 9 Mb
Written for the Flash developer who wants to do more, Steve Webster’s PHP for Flash shows how to combine simple server-side scripts with Flash to create smarter, more versatile Web applications. With a truly engaging writing style and a sharp visual sense, this title will let any working Flash programmer make the transition to simple server-side scripting with PHP. While most programming books print source code as is, this one distinguishes itself with a keen visual presentation with graphics used to highlight sections of both Flash ActionScript and basic PHP. It also helps that Webster is a notably lively writer. A few guiding principles govern this text. First, all the interfaces are created in Flash and ActionScript, and the book walks you through the steps required to build these designs.

After a basic tutorial of the PHP language, the author uses PHP to add additional functionality to Flash-powered Web applications, from managing user registration to searching news articles using regular expressions. This text provides one of the best (and most truly accessible) tutorials for understanding and using regular expressions. While most writers pass the buck to difficult online resources for regular expressions, the author takes the time to explain and demonstrate how regular expressions really work, with clear examples and a nicely patient presentation style. Developing Visual Basic Add-ins

Developing Visual Basic Add-ins
O’Reilly | 2000 | ISBN: 1565925270 | 183 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Most developers can think of dozens of ways in which they’d like to modify Visual Basic’s integrated development environment (or IDE) in order to work more productively. These enhancements can range from simple items (like determining the version of Visual Basic for Applications used by the IDE, or clearing the Immediate window) to much more involved ones (like developing a utility that allows the tab order of the individual controls on a form to be set easily).

Just as the major Microsoft Office applications expose their functionality through their object models, Visual Basic’s development environment also exposes its functionality through the Visual Basic Extensibility Model. Unfortunately, though, the model is poorly documented and poorly understood. And most programmers simply don’t have the time to sift through the documentation and experiment using trial and error to extend the IDE.Developing Visual Basic Add-ins addresses this lack of adequate documentation by showing how to develop add-ins for Visual Basic Versions 5.0 and 6.0 and by providing numerous coding examples of simple but useful add-ins.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part, Add-in Basics, discusses the mechanics of add-in creation. This includes such topics as:

* Retrieving a reference to the VB IDE
* Registering an add-in
* Activating an add-in
* Making an add-in’s functionality accessible through a menu option or toolbar button

Developing an add-in requires creativity, since it requires a programmer to both identify a shortcoming of the IDE and implement some means of enhancing it. The second part of the book, The Extensibility Model, prepares you for this creative part of add-in development by focusing on the VB IDE Extensibility Model. Individual chapters provide in-depth coverage of specific categories of objects, such as user interface objects, project-related objects, and form and control objects.

With Developing Visual Basic Add-ins, you can finally make all of the enhancements to the VB IDE that will allow you to program more effectively.

Programming Mobile Devices: An Introduction for Practitioners

Product Description
With forewords by Jan Bosch, Nokia and Antero Taivalsaari, Sun Microsystems.

Learn how to programme the mobile devices of the future!

The importance of mobile systems programming has emerged over the recent years as a new domain in software development. The design of software that runs in a mobile device requires that developers combine the rules applicable in embedded environment; memory-awareness, limited performance, security, and limited resources with features that are needed in workstation environment; modifiability, run-time extensions, and rapid application development.

Programming Mobile Devices is a comprehensive, practical introduction to programming mobile systems. The book is a platform independent approach to programming mobile devices: it does not focus on specific technologies, and devices, instead it evaluates the component areas and issues that are common to all mobile software platforms. This text will enable the designer to programme mobile devices by mastering both hardware-aware and application-level software, as well as the main principles that guide their design.

Programming Mobile Devices:

Programming Mobile Devices is essential reading for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, academic and industrial researchers in the field as well as software developers, and programmers.

Deploying QoS for Cisco IP and Next Generation Networks: The Definitive Guide
Posted: October 24th, 2009, 9:25pm CEST
Tags  [edit]

Review
Srinivas Rao Mulugu, Prinicipal Architect, Wipro Infotech Company

"The engineering cadre of enterprise and service provider organizations would find the book beneficial. Also, this book would be of good use for universities and training institutions, given that the configuration templates have been included ? impressively for both IOS as well as IOS-XR. Also, as the definitive trend towards NGNs takes shape, more and more engineers from the traditional voice-telecom domain would be looking for knowledge on IP networks and in particular QoS in IP networks....I would expect that given the topics the book addresses, the book would be relevant for several years. Given that the CRS-1 platform of Cisco is the next generation platform that is designed to last for close to a decade, it is not inconceivable that the book has relevance for that entire period. The comprehensiveness with which the topics have been covered indicates to me that this book would indeed be a definitive guide for a long time to come."

Review
"Professor Nassar has an uncanny ability to demystify the complexities of telecommunications systems engineering." Dale N. Hatfield, former chief, Office of Engineering and Technology, Federal Communications Commission

Book Provides a Worthy Telecomm Course:
Continuing its Demystifying Technology series, LLH Technology Publishing's Telecommunications Demystified by Carl R. Nassar provides a wide-ranging tutorial on theory and practical issues using the requisite math and equations. This book does not provide primarily a circuit-design or even a system-level, block-diagram treatment; instead, it seeks to explain the underlying principles, problems, techniques, and constraints of standard telecommunication functions. The book covers networks, source coding/decoding, modulators and demodulators, channel coding and decoding, trellis-coded modulation, filtering and equalizers, signal detection and estimation, and error detection and correction, among other topics.

I won't mislead you and say this book is an easy read or a quick read. If you plan to get the most out of it, you need to pay attention and follow the equations and derivations, which include integrals, differentials, matrices, and more. Fortunately, the author clearly explains the transitions from one equation to the next without those fear-inducing phrases, such as "we can see," "the derivation is left as an exercise to the reader," and "it can be shown." If you want to increase your understanding of the issues and answers in digital-communications systems and some analog systems, this book should help. It also includes a CD-ROM with a searchable version of the book and tutorials that support topics in the text.

From the Inside Flap
This book is intended to be of use to two broad groups of readers. The first group comprises those who have good familiarity with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and/or Telecommunications. The second group consists of those who need at least a casual or, perhaps, detailed, knowledge of the applications of DSP in telecommunications. A typical member of the second group is someone who is involved in a design project utilizing DSP but whose area of expertise is a different branch of electrical engineering, such as software, hardware, systems engineering, or application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design. Included in the second group are students who wish to get a feel for how DSP is applied.

The book is comprised of nine chapters.

The intent of Chapter 1 is to provide the spectrum of readership a preamble that puts the material in the subsequent chapters in perspective.

Chapters 2 and 3 are targeted toward the second group and cover the fundamental concepts of communication theory and digital signal processing.

Readers in the first group could skip directly to Chapter 4 or skim Chapters 2 and 3 to get a feel for the notation used.

Chapters 4 through 9 are reasonably self contained and draw on material from the first three chapters. Those well versed in telecommunications would find the material useful in understanding the concepts of DSP; experts in DSP would find a description of some telecommunications concepts in a familiar jargon.

From the Back Cover
The key feature of future mobile communication systems is the ability to deliver wideband and high bit-rate multimedia services alongside the traditional radio services such as voice, messaging and slow rate data. The broad range of services expected to be supported can be divided into different Quality of Service (QoS) classes. However, the provision of such mobile multimedia services under QoS guarantees will not be possible without a utilization of the air interface resources by means of Radio Resource Management (RRM) strategies that ensure the target QoS, the planned coverage area and that offer a high system capacity. Under this framework, the book focuses on the RRM concepts, including the theoretical background that serves as a basis for the description of specific RRM algorithms. The RRM problem for UMTS is presented, and more specifically, for the FDD mode, which is based on a WCDMA scheme. More specifically, the different aspects that are covered include:

This comprehensive title is essential reading for engineers and managers in radio engineering departments of UMTS network operators and UMTS equipment manufacturers. It will also prove insightful to researchers in the field of 3G and Beyond 3G systems and academics in any of these areas.
