To the student
English Grammar in Use Supplementary Exercises is for intermediate and advanced students who want extra practice in grammar, without help from a teacher.
There arc 200 exercises in this new edition. Each exercise relates to a unit or units in English Grammar in Use new edition 2004, with the unit number(s) at the top of the page. All the answers arc given in the Key (pages 121-136). Some exercises ask you to use your own ideas. For these, you can check the Example answers in the Key. You can use this book if you don't have English Grammar in Use, but for an explanation of the grammar points, you need to check in English Grammar in Use.
The grammar points covered in the book are not in order of difficulty, so you can go straight to the parts where you need the most practice. Where there arc several exercises on one grammar point, however, the easier ones come first. It's a good idea to do each exercise, check your answers and then go on to the next one.
Many of the exercises are in the form of emails, letters, conversations or short articles. You can use these as models for writing or speaking practice.
To the teacher
English Grammar in Use Supplementary Exercises offers extra practice of most of the grammar points covered in English Grammar in Use new edition 2004. Much of the language is contextualised within dialogues, emails, letters, articles etc., encouraging students to consider meaning as well as form. The book can be used as self-study Read more...

How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD)

Gerald Kelly “How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD)"
Pearson ESL | 2001-05-15 | ISBN: 0582429757 | 160 pages | PDF + mp3 | 15,1 + 21,7 MB
Reader's review:
Like most books in the "How to.." series, such as How to Teach Grammar (How To...), "How to Teach Pronunciation" by Gerald Kelly is an awesome book for teachers in need of some advice and input on the area of pronunciation.
The book has a variety of chapters on different aspects. It begins with the basics, (vowel and consonant sounds), and builds up to intonation and connected speech. There are excellent chapters on stress, sentence stress and more. Every chapter has sample lessons that illustrate some great ideas for teaching. They are all very adaptable.
The book has some excellent theoretical aspects, giving rules for connected speech and the like, for example. The theory is very clear, gives you a good run down on the terminology and keeps it all very real. The book really was written for the working teacher.
Choosing this one or Sound Foundations (Teacher Development) is a tough call. I would tend to go with both, as they have both got some serious advantages over each other.
Either way, I found this book an excellent source of new direction, new clarity and new focus on the ever present pronunciation blues. Totally recommended!

Each regional section comprises an introduction that deals with problems of language preservation peculiar to the area, surveys of known extinct languages, and problems of classification. The introduction is followed by a list of all known languages within the region, endangered or not, arranged by genetic affiliation, with endangered and extinct languages marked. This listing is followed by entries covering each language listed as endangered. Useful maps are provided to pinpoint the more complex clusters of smaller languages. The Encyclopedia therefore provides in a single resource: expert analysis of the current language policy situation in every multilingual country and on every continent, detailed descriptions of little-known languages from all over the world, and clear alphabetical entries, region by region, of all the world's languages currently thought to be in danger of extinction. The Encyclopedia of the World’s Endangered Languages will be a necessary addition to all academic linguistics collections and will be a useful resource for a range of readers with an interest in development studies, cultural heritage and international affairs.

Simpler Syntax

Peter W. Culicover, Ray Jackendoff “Simpler Syntax"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2005-08-22 | ISBN: 0199271097 | 608 pages | PDF | 2,1 Mb
This groundbreaking book offers a new and compelling perspective on the structure of human language. The fundamental issue it addresses is the proper balance between syntax and semantics, between structure and derivation, and between rule systems and lexicon. It argues that the balance struck by mainstream generative grammar is wrong. It puts forward a new basis for syntactic theory, drawing on a wide range of frameworks, and charts new directions for research. In the past four decades, theories of syntactic structure have become more abstract, and syntactic derivations have become ever more complex. Peter Culicover and Ray Jackendoff trace this development through the history of contemporary syntactic theory, showing how much it has been driven by theory-internal rather than empirical considerations. They develop an alternative that is responsive to linguistic, cognitive, computational, and biological concerns. At the core of this alternative is the Simpler Syntax Hypothesis: the most explanatory syntactic theory is one that imputes the minimum structure necessary to mediate between phonology and meaning. A consequence of this hypothesis is a far richer mapping between syntax and semantics than is generally assumed. Through concrete analyses of numerous grammatical phenomena, some well studied and some new, the authors demonstrate the empirical and conceptual superiority of the Simpler Syntax approach. Simpler Syntax is addressed to linguists of all persuasions. It will also be of central interest to those concerned with language in psychology, human biology, evolution, computational science, and artificial intellige

College Writing: A Personal Approach to Academic Writing
大学英语写作
Author:Toby Fulwiler
Format:PDF 1.6MB
Publisher: Boynton/Cook
Number Of Pages: 256
Publication Date: 2002-01-11
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0867095237
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780867095234
Writing is a varied critical and imaginative process, not a rigid adherence to a set of conventions. Based on that premise, the third edition of College Writing, like its previous editions, continually exhorts students to find and celebrate their own voices. In fact, it is this affirmation of individual creativity that sets College Writing apart from other process-oriented rhetorics.
Lively and conversational in tone, the third edition boasts a writer-to-writer perspective that will put students at ease. College Writing walks students through the main elements of writing, from discovery and research to revising and editing. At the same time, author Toby Fulwiler allows for many detours in his step-by-step approach, with frequent reminders that everyone's processes are unique and that establishing and maintaining a personal voice can be achieved while meeting conventional academic expectations.
Fulwiler examines the different, yet overlapping stages of writing. He addresses rhetorical issues of audience, purpose, and voice, as well as the details of field, library, and Internet research, with particular attention to evaluating sources. He also offers these new features to keep students and teachers up to date:

Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English
朗文学生口语与书面英语语法
Author:Douglas Biber, Susan Conrad, Geoffrey Leech
Format:PDF 82.3MB
Publisher: Pearson ESL
Number Of Pages: 487
Publication Date: 2002-12-10
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0582237262
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780582237261
This book is a coursebook and a reference grammar for students and their teachers. Although it is based on the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (LGSWE), the Student Grammar is much more than just an abbreviated LGSWE. Rather, we have simplified and reorganized the content of the LGSWE, avoiding much technical detail while retaining the strengths of the larger book. For example, like the LGSWE, the Student Grammar contains over 3,000 authentic English examples, and contrasts the major patterns of use in spoken and written registers. However, we have simplified the presentation when possible; for example, we have tried hard to find new and simpler extracts from our corpus data, often replacing more complex examples in LGSWE.
Of the five authors of LGSWE, we three owe a debt of gratitude to our two other co-authors: Stig Johansson and Ed Finegan. We benefited from the work that Stig and Ed did on the LGSWE during our writing of the Student Grammar. We would also like to thank the students in English 528 at Northern Arizona University, who used a draft of the Student Grammar as their grammar textbook and provided numerous helpful comments and suggestions for revision.
To support the educational use of the Student Grammar, we have also written a Workbook, which can be used as a classroom textbook or for self-study by students. The Workbook provides exercises based on authentic English texts and sentences, linked directly to the Grammar Bites in the present book.
