Simply Maya The Pirate Ship - 1.6 GB
If you are a fan of the big sea and love old ships then the Pirate modeling - texturing tutorial is for you. This tutorial is intended for intermediate to advanced users of Maya who have a good understanding of the tools set.
You will start off the pirate ship project by creating Image planes to use as reference to achieve the basic shape and size of our ship using
nurbs primitives and nurbs curves. Once we have our ship blocked out we will begin converting into polygons to start adding details to the wood on the side of the ship. We’ll be using a variety of tools and techniques such as split polygon tool, 'move vertices' as well
as 'convert to Subdivisions'to have a bit more control over shaping the geometry. We will also do more nurbs curve work to create ropes
that hang down from the sails. After are ship model is complete the tutorial switches to preparing the model for texturing.
We will then enter the world of UV layouts and will be using a few different options to achieve this called such as automatic map'and planar map',
as well as learn how to effectively move any UVs that are overlapped using the tools in the UV editor to obtain a flat map. Once our UV's are finished
and we've taken a UV snap shot we then import our snapshot into a paint program and learn how to color and hand paint the ships'surface.

The best Perl Quick Reference
This is possibly the best perl quick reference book I've ever seen. I've read every perl reference I've been able to get my hands on, and this is by far the best. Fast, concise, and easy to read. The information is easy to locate and the examples help you to understand the exact usage of each command.

Review:
Mediocre at best. Not a quick reference. Too many typos.
Despite claiming to be a quick reference book, this book doesn't functionwell as such. It starts off with a reasonable basic tutorial which is a goodintroduction to the language. It's concise, but tells you what you need toknow, although obviously there is a limit to what can be covered in 45 pages. However, the 3/4 of the book that is the quick reference part is horriblyformatted, making it very hard to look something up quickly. E.g. every entryhas bold 'Compliance' logos (for NT, perl4 or perl5), which draw the eye, making the definition of each item, which is what you really wanted to see, hard to pick out. The absence of a one-line definition also makes it hard tofind what you want unless you already know the name.It is also completely lacking in useful summary tables of the variables, functions etc, even in alphabetic order, never mind by purpose, so you haveto flick through page by page looking for something you want. A table showingthe long and short equivalent names might be nice too. The page headers don'ttell you whether you are in variables, functions or operators either, onlythe first entry on the page -useless. The lack of tables is perhaps not _too_bad if you already know what you want, so more experienced users might notfine it so annoying, but it dramtically reduces it's utility as a'quick-reference' book. There is also an enormous number of mistakes, both in the examples and in thelayout. One appendix is in twice, under different titles! I find it hard tobelieve that anyone proof-read it.Over all, whilst it enabled me to get started with Perl, I found it deeplyunsatisfactory, and I am now going to buy a decent book. Not worth the money.

Preface There are some common mistakes technology vendors tend to make in an early market. They get confused by all the hype. But in an early market it is usually the supply side not the demand side that makes all the noise. This is self-perpetuating one vendor hears noise from other vendors, interprets it as a market, and then generates some more noise. In many cases, the hype gets out of hand and people get all the wrong expectations. Unfortunately, in the midst of all that, no real buyers can be identified. For example, two years ago many people thought there would be a real interest in performing financial transactions on a cell phone. Some were thinking that the average person would want to trade stocks from these small devices. The problem was that typical consumers had no desire to do so. The hype would not have been so bad if it had stayed among a closed group on the supply side. After all, the suppliers themselves are at fault for not having identified buyers with real problems that could be solved through the new technology. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The general public got wind of these big ideas about a big emerging market, and the confusion spread to the demand side. Following the early hype is a lot of disappointment and frustration. Few people realize that there was never such a market just a lot of companies going to the same trade shows and recycling ideas, mistaking those ideas for something coming from potential buyers. People who were in the middle of this look for various scapegoats for the market's not having taken off. They

Alison Balter's Mastering Microsoft Office Access 2003 (Paperback)
by Alison Balter (Author)
(13 customer reviews)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Microsoft Access has the steepest learning curve of all the Microsoft Office applications. Its basic functions aren't really intuitive, and users typically need to do some programming as part of their first Access project. For those reasons, Access is the Office application for which Office users--even experienced, highly competent ones--tend to need help learning. Alison Balter's Mastering Microsoft Access 2003 is a new addition to the shelf of Access manuals, and it's one of the best. Balter does a great job of helping a novice Access user (someone who can open a database and edit fields, but can do little more) become an accomplished user. In other words, this book teaches Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming as it applies to Access. The word "Mastering" is appropriate in its title.
Balter's basic approach is to introduce a concept (say, the Implements keyword or ADO Database objects) and quickly explain its purpose with prose, then provide an example of how the concept works in practice. Which is to say, she provides a code sample. Because of this strategy, almost every page of this book has code on it. However, the author appears to have made a conscious effort to keep her code snippets short and easily comprehensible. Long, difficult-to-trace listings that span multiple pages are thankfully absent. Balter also does a good job of illustrating the Access development environment, including many screen shots of Access at work and of the applications that result from her code. This is a detailed, carefully considered book that will make sense to all but the most inexperienced Access users. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to write applications with Microsoft Access 2003. Noteworthy coverage deals with the Access way of handling object orientation, clever form-design strategies, and scores of techniques for performing various procedures on databases. Security coverage is good, too.
Book Description
What Alison's book offers over other books in that she is able to take a highly technical topic and present it in a manner that is easy to comprehend. It is a book that the reader will often want to read from cover to cover, but it can also act as an excellent reference. Readers of this book will learn:
- Access 11 application development and real-world solutions to specific development and programming problems.
- Professional programming techniques backed by concise, no-nonsense explanations of the underlying theories.
- Debugging and troubleshooting methods to solve problems quickly and get stalled development projects back on track.

From the Inside Flap
Introduction
Ever since software development became an engineering discipline, software development teams everywhere in the world have faced similar development and deployment problems. Among other things, developers today are concerned about:
Reusing code that has been tested and used in other applications
Developing flexible applications that can be customized to the users needs, but not at the expense of overburdening the development team
Addressing anomalies and add features after the application has been shipped, while avoiding a complete rewrite of the application
Improving application development time by leveraging against software code developed by third party software vendors
Developing distributed and non-distributed applications in a similar manner
All of these challenges and many more are addressed by a single technology: the Microsoft Component Object Model, better known as COM. COM is a framework for developing software components, small binary executables, that provide services to applications and other components.
The incredible explosion of the Internet has caused a revolution in the way information has to be made available to the users. In developing enterprise systems, the traditional client/server model has been replaced with a three-tier programming model, enhanced for Internet applications. Developing such enterprise systems is a time- and resource-consuming affair, as the system has to meet extra enterprise-level requirements such as scalability, robustness, security, transaction support, etc.
COM+ is an advanced run-time environment that provides services to meet many of the above-mentioned enterprise-level requirements. It is an integral part of the Windows 2000 Operating System. Developers can leverage the services provided by COM+, instead of building the services themselves.
This book focuses on understanding the COM+ architecture from a developer's perspective and building COM+ applications using Microsoft Visual C++ and the Active Template Library (ATL).
COM+ is not a radical departure from COM--it is just the next stage in the evolution of the COM programming model. As a matter of fact, it is very difficult to determine where COM ends and where COM+ begins. In order to understand the COM+ architecture and the services provided by COM+, it is necessary to understand the fundamental component model at the heart of COM+. To this end, the book is divided in two parts. The first part builds the foundation that is COM and the second part explains the services provided by COM+ version 1.0.About This Book
The purpose of writing this book is twofold. To help you:
Understand the COM/COM+ architecture, and
Explore the services provided by COM+ 1.0.
In order to achieve the stated goals, I have presented the material from a developer's perspective. I have illustrated the key concepts by writing some simple applications using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, Platform SDK (January 2000), and ATL 3.0. This book provides enough C++ code and tools to enable the readers to be more productive and to carry out further research.
As we progress through unfolding the COM+ architecture and services, I first present one or more software-engineering problems at hand, and then discuss the solution that COM+ has to offer. Whenever applicable, code snippets are provided to illustrate and explain the concepts.
In an attempt to focus on COM+ 1.0 architecture and services, I have refrained from including material that is not of any practical importance. Consequently, I do not discuss the origin and history of COM, or even Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS), a precursor to COM+ 1.0. However, whenever possible, I have touched upon the new services that are being planned for the future release of COM+ (COM+ 1.x).Choice of Language
COM+ is a specification. As such, it is language independent. However, most COM-based components are currently written in C++. This book uses C++ for almost all the server-side code. Client-side usage is shown in C++, VB, or in any other language that is appropriate for the given situation.Prerequisites
The most important prerequisite for this book is your willingness to learn.
The book is written for intermediate to advanced developers. It is assumed that the readers have a working knowledge of the following:
Windows 2000 Operating System
C++ programming language
VB programming language
C++ templates. In particular, familiarity with C++ Standard Template Library (STL) is helpful
Developing programs using Win32 API
Windows 2000 security model
Strictly speaking, many of these assumptions can be relaxed. For example, knowledge of Win32 API or C++ templates is helpful but not mandatory. As we go through developing sample code, I am confident readers will automatically pick up the missing information.Sample Code
All the examples provided in the book are concise and complete. For brevity, I sometimes show only the relevant code snippet in the book. However, complete source code is available on the companion CD. All the examples and tools have been compiled under Visual C++ 6.0 SP3 and Platform SDK (January 2000), and have been tested with the release version of Windows 2000 OS.References
This book frequently refers to other books, Microsoft's Knowledge Base articles, articles from various journals and from Microsoft's Developers Network (MSDN) Library. All the references for a particular chapter are listed at the end of the chapter. Each reference is indexed by a keyword that uses a combination of author's last name and year the reference was published. For example, Don Box's book Essential COM, which was published in 1998, is indexed as Box-98. In the book, each time I have to refer to an article, I use the keyword index of the reference.Chapter Organization
The book is divided into two parts. The first part, The Foundation, consists of three chapters. It explains the fundamentals of Component Object Model and shows how to design and develop COM-based applications. Each chapter builds on the knowledge from the previous chapter.
The second part, The Extension, focuses on COM+ architecture and services provided by COM+ 1.0. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of COM+. These chapters are largely independent of each other. Chapter five, however, explains the COM+ programming model, and should be read before looking into any other COM+ chapter.Companion CDThe companion CD contains the following:
The source code for the C++ utility classes and tools developed in the book.
The entire source code for all the examples arranged by chapters.
More information about the contents of the CD can be found in the read-me file on the CD.

Publisher: Apress (September 25, 2006) | ISBN-10: 1590597109 | PDF | 10,3 Mb | 312 pages
Pro OGRE 3D Programming is your detailed guide to utilizing the OGRE 3D engine, one of the best-in-breed 3D rendering libraries available. You'll learn what OGRE is, and more importantly, what it is not. OGRE gives you an object-oriented interface to render 3D scenes independent of the implementation, such as Direct3D or OpenGL. OGRE is available on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It can be utilized to create a variety of 3D-based applications and is commonly used in game creation.
This book covers OGRE from obtaining the source to polishing the final product. If you are an aspiring game programmer with beginner/intermediate-level knowledge of game design practices and intermediate-level knowledge of the C++ language, this is the book for you. Familiarity with open source project management tools such as CVS and Subversion will also help you to digest the material. Included with the book is a ready-to-use Utility Toolkit class library useful for jumpstarting OGRE-based programs. You'll also find discussion of OGRE's capabilities from the perspective of a content creator, not just a programmer.
The content of this book was reviewed prior to publication by Steve Streeting, founder and lead developer of the OGRE 3D project.

Summary:
As a tutorial, Beginning ASP Databases offers an entry point to one of the most crucial aspects of Microsoft-oriented Web development--database integration with Active Server Pages. In Beginning ASP Databases, a trio of authors covers the basics of working with databases from ASP--especially using ActiveX Database Objects (ADO).
The book is quite substantive in content but is written in a somewhat light-hearted style that makes readers new to the technology comfortable. The authors begin with a discussion of the benefits of ASP and ADO, and then explain how to configure the technology on the various flavors of Windows. From there, they show how to access databases using ADO, demystify how it all works, and focus on several key areas, including debugging, SQL, and stored procedures.
Plenty of code examples are included, and each is captioned with step-by-step explanations. Exercises and quizzes also complement the material. Throughout the book the authors identify some quite useful techniques to employ and traps to watch for--nuggets of knowledge that will set new ASP programmers on the right track. A lengthy case study ties it all together with a real-world example.
If you're planning on building Web sites on the Microsoft platform, ASP/ADO database access knowledge is essential. This fine guide offers an excellent way to get up to speed seamlessly. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered: ADO/OLE DB architecture, SQL, recordsets, databases and cookies, error handling, command object, stored procedures, irregular data handling, performance testing and tuning.
