Book Description: )
A comprehensive and practical guide to PAM for Linux: how modules work and how to implement them, covering 11 common modules, and installation of third-party offerings. Also covers developing your own modules in C. First this book explains how Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) simplify and standardize authentication in Linux. It shows in detail how PAM works and how it is configured. Then 11 common modules used across UNIX/Linux distributions are examined and explained, including all their parameters. Installation of third-party modules is discussed, and the development of new modules and PAM-aware applications is outlined PAM-aware applications reduce the complexity of authentication. With PAM you can use the same user database for every login process. PAM also supports different authentication processes as required. Moreover, PAM is a well-defined API, and PAM-aware applications will not break if you change the underlying authentication configuration. The PAM framework is widely used by most Linux distributions for authentication purposes. Originating from Solaris 2.6 ten years ago, PAM is used today by most proprietary and free UNIX operating systems including GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris, following both the design concept and the practical details. PAM is thus a unifying technology for authentication mechanisms in UNIX. PAM is a modular and flexible authentication management layer that sits between Linux applications and the native underlying authentication system. PAM can be implemented with various applications without having to recompile the applications to specifically support PAM. This book provides a practical approach to UNIX/Linux authentication. The design principles are explained thoroughly, then illustrated through the examination of popular modules. It is intended as a one-stop introduction and reference to PAM. This book is for experienced system administrators and developers working with multiple Linux/UNIX servers or with both UNIX and Windows servers. It assumes a good level of admin knowledge, and that developers are competent in C development on UNIX-based systems.

This book has several purposes. First, it introduces advanced parts of the C language. It also describes changes in the ANSI standard, which is the only true definition of the C language. In addition, the book contains much of what I have learned (often the hard way) about C programming.
Advanced C is divided into five parts, and each part can be used by itself. Part I gets you started and lays the groundwork for the rest of the book. In Part II, you learn how to manage data and files when programming in C. Part III introduces integrating C with other languages and interfacing with other environments such as database programs. Part IV is a reference section that covers the header files, the intrinsic functions, the preprocessor, and some performance and debugging techniques. Part V Advanced C xxiv (the appendixes) contains an ASCII table, information about different compilers, an introduction to C++, and a cross-reference of functions and their header files. Many chapters contain example programs. In some chapters, a single example program is used to demonstrate several topics in the chapter.

The best one volume book out there, but not perfect
This is the best single volume book on the subject of information visualisation that I've read. Sure, there are other very nice books on diagrams, maps, data analysis, modelling and scientific visualisation. However, none of them have the scope of this book.
And therein lies the problem. For a single volume book Ware's effort tries to cover too much and some of the chapters are quite weak (chapter 0 and 10). Also, the fact that it was written by a psychologist shows in a good and bad way: human visual cognition is correctly the foundation upon which to build visualisation. Unfortunately the examples and the ideas for implementation are often lacking or poor in quality.
The first edition also has typesetting errors, so be sure to get the second edition.
All in all, it's still a book worth getting if you're in any serious way connected with the practise of visualisation. However, don't expect it to be the bible of the field, as such a thing does not exist (yet).

Book Description: )
Pro Spring is not a blatant clone of the supplied documentation. Instead...the authors gracefully introduce Spring by adopting a very pragmatic approach based on their real-world experiences with the framework.
 Valentin Crettaz, JavaRanch Bartender
Spring--the open source Java-based framework--allows you to build lighter, better performing applications. Written by Spring insiders Rob Harrop and Jan Machacek, Pro Spring is the only book endorsed by Rod Johnson, founder of the Spring Framework. At over 800 pages, this is by far the most comprehensive book available and thoroughly explores the power of Spring. You'll learn Spring basics and core topics, as well as share the authors' insights and real-world experience with remoting, mail integration, hibernate, and EJB.
From the Foreword: "Rob's enthusiasm for Spring--and technology in general--is infectious. He has a wide range of industry experience and a refreshingly practical, common sense approach to applying it. All those qualities come out in this book. It's evident on nearly every page that it reflects in-depth experience with Spring and J2EE as a whole. Rob is not only an author and open source developer--he is an application developer, like his readers. I firmly believe that the best writing on software development comes out of experience in the trenches, so this is my kind of book.
If you're new to Spring, this book will help you understand its core concepts and the background in areas such as transaction management and O/R mapping that underpins them. If you're already using Spring, you will learn about features you haven't yet seen and hopefully, gain a deeper understanding of those features you're already using."
--Rod Johnson, Founder of the Spring Framework.

Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Edition: 2 edition (November 5, 1999)
Paperback: 432 pages
Summary:
Concurrent Programming in Java, 2nd Edition surveys a wide field of research in parallelism and concurrency and shows how to do more with multithreading in Java with dozens of patterns and design tips. Written for the advanced Java developer, this book offers a comprehensive tour of leading-edge thinking about parallel coding processes.
Within the dozens of techniques and tips offered here, this book accomplishes at least two goals. First, it shows how concurrency is implemented by default within Java, with material on how built-in features (like the
synchronized keyword and its memory model) can be expected to perform when dealing with multiple threads. Naturally, Java threads themselves are also covered, including priorities, scheduling, and the like.
Much of this book looks at ways to improve performance of concurrent code beyond the simple default strategies. After defining criteria for measuring concurrent code (such as safety and "liveness," a measure of running live threads effectively), the book presents dozens of techniques for letting threads work together safely. For the working Java programmer, coverage of patterns that have been implemented in the downloadable
java.concurrency package will be the most immediately useful. (Within this nearly encyclopedic survey, short code snippets are used for every pattern and concept.)
Though theoretical at times, this book offers plenty of ideas and sample code to get you started thinking of ways to improve multithreaded code.
Impressively comprehensive,
Concurrent Programming in Java offers a veritable bible of techniques for doing two things at once with threads in Java. It's a worthwhile guide to the state-of-the-art strategies for improving the performance of your Java threads.
--Richard DraganTopics covered: Threads and concurrency in Java, design considerations (safety, liveness, and performance), Before/After Patterns, layering, adapters, immutability and synchronization, deadlock, resource ordering, the Java Memory Model and concurrency, using the
java.concurrency package, confinement, refactoring for concurrency, mutexes, read-write locks, recovering from failure, notifications, semaphores, latches, exchanges, transactions, one-way messages, worker threads, polling and event-driven I/O, parallelism techniques (fork/join, computation trees, and barriers), Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP).

Java Security is extraordinary both for its technical depth and its readability. It provides the Java programmer with a complete overview of the Java security architecture and security classes, plus a wealth of detailed information and code examples for specific implementations. The book opens with a clear discussion of what Java security is, how the various Java sandbox models work, and how Java applications and applets execute within the security model. The following chapters look in depth at the elements of the Java security architecture: language rules, class loaders, the security manager, the access controller, and permission objects. All these chapters provide detailed information on implementation, as well as an excellent explanation of the role of each feature within the entire security picture. The second half of the book covers cryptographic features in the Java security package (much enhanced in Java 1.2) and how Java programs work with code that performs authentication and encryption. Here, you'll find detailed chapters on message digests, keys and certificates, key management, digital signatures, and the Java Cryptography Extensions. Anyone who needs to understand Java security, but especially those who will implement security features in Java applications, will want to own this book.

Book Description: )
Persistence-the ability of data to outlive an instance of a program-is central to modern applications. Hibernate, the most popular Java persistence tool, provides automatic and transparent object/relational mapping making it a snap to work with SQL databases in Java applications. Hibernate applications are cheaper, more portable, and more resilient to change. Because it conforms to the new EJB 3.0 and Java Persistence 1.0 standard, Hibernate allows the developer to seamlessly create efficient, scalable Java EE applications.
Java Persistence with Hibernate explores Hibernate by developing an application that ties together hundreds of individual examples. You'll immediately dig into the rich programming model of Hibernate 3.2 and Java Persistence, working through queries, fetching strategies, caching, transactions, conversations, and more. You'll also appreciate the well-illustrated discussion of best practices in database design, object/relational mapping, and optimization techniques.
In this revised edition of the bestselling Hibernate in Action, authors Christian Bauer and Gavin King-the founder of the Hibernate project-cover Hibernate 3.2 in detail along with the EJB 3.0 and Java Persistence standard.

Shelley Powers "What Are Syndication Feeds"
O'Reilly | ISBN: 0-596-52697-0 | December 2005 | CHM | 55.2 kB

Syndication feeds have become a standard tool on the Web. But when you enter the world of syndicated content, you're often faced with the question of what is the "proper" way to do syndication. This edoc, which covers Atom and the two flavors of RSS--2.0 and 1.0--succinctly explains what a syndication feed is, then gets down to the nitty-gritty of what makes up a feed, how you can find and subscribe to them, and which feed will work best for you.
Reviewer on O'Reilly's web site:
Though the basics of this shortcut cover some good information, I think it has a little problem with deciding who the intended audience is. Most of the content is more of a definition, description and overview of RSS feeds, which is fitting to the title. But, it takes the time to define the elements of a fee for different feed protocols, etc. which would really only be interesting to someone trying to build a feed by hand. For those sections, if they are intended for a more advanced user, they followed it short.
Though I have been impressed by many of the O'Reilly shortcut titles it for their concise and accurate information provided in a downloadable real time (read that instant gratification) format, this title fell a little bit short. That said, there is some good information here for beginners who want to understand a little bit more about what RSS feeds are, how to use an aggregator, how to subscribe to feeds in general, and things like that.

Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Mark Twain is one of our most accessible cultural icons, a figure familiar to virtually every American and renowned internationally. But he was not always as we know him today. Mark Twain began life as a loose gathering of postures, attitudes, and voices in the mind of Samuel Clemens. It was some time before he took full possession of the personality the world now recognizes.
This is the story of the coming of age of Mark Twain. It begins in 1867, with Clemens stepping off the steamship Quaker City and almost immediately declaring himself "in a fidget to move." It comes to a close in 1871, with Clemens settling in Hartford. Mark Twain was substantially formed during the intervening years, as Clemens came East, gained fame and fortune with the publication of Innocents Abroad, courted and married Olivia Langdon, and established himself as a professional writer. Each of these steps represented a profound change in the former Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope as he sifted through the elements in his personality and began to assume the qualities we now associate with him. The tale that unfolds here shows how, through that process, the Mark Twain of the late 1860s became the Mark Twain of all time.

Every so often a character so captures the hearts and imaginations of readers that he seems to take on a life of his own long after the final page is turned. For such a character, one book is not enoughreaders must know what happens next. Now Dean Koontz returns with the novel his fans have been demanding. With the emotional power and sheer storytelling artistry that are his trademarks, Koontz takes up once more the story of a unique young hero and an eccentric little town in a tale that is equal parts suspense and terror, adventure and mysteryand altogether irresistibly odd.
We’re all a little odd beneath the surface. He’s the most unlikely hero you’ll ever meetan ordinary guy with a modest job you might never look at twice. But there’s so much more to any of us than meets the eyeand that goes triple for Odd Thomas. For Odd lives always between two worlds in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, where the heroic and the harrowing are everyday events. Odd never asked to communicate with the deadit’s something that just happened. But as the unofficial goodwill ambassador between our world and theirs, he’s got a duty to do the right thing. That’s the way Odd sees it and that’s why he’s won hearts on both sides of the divide between life and death.
A childhood friend of Odd’s has disappeared. The worst is feared. But as Odd applies his unique talents to the task of finding the missing person, he discovers something worse than a dead body, encounters an enemy of exceptional cunning, and spirals into a vortex of terror. Once again Odd will stand against our worst fears. Around him will gather new allies and old, some living and some not. For in the battle to come, there can be no innocent bystanders, and every sacrifice can tip the balance between despair and hope. As a result, the microphone signal has to be "cleaned" with digital signal processing tools before it is played out, transmitted, or stored. This book is about speech enhancement. Different well-known and state-of-the-art methods for noise reduction, with one or multiple microphones, are discussed. By speech enhancement, we mean not only noise reduction but also dereverberation and separation of independent signals. These topics are also covered in this book. However, the general emphasis is on noise reduction because of the large number of applications that can benefit from this technology. The goal of this book is to provide a strong reference for researchers, engineers, and graduate students who are interested in the problem of signal and speech enhancement. To do so, we invited well-known experts to contribute chapters covering the state of the art in this focused field.

Learning Cocoa with Objective-C is the "must-have" book for people who want to develop applications for Mac OS X, and is the only book approved and reviewed by Apple engineers. Based on the Jaguar release of Mac OS X 10.2, this edition of Learning Cocoa includes examples that use the Address Book and Universal Access APIs. Also included is a handy quick reference card, charting Cocoa's Foundation and AppKit frameworks, along with an Appendix that includes a listing of resources essential to any Cocoa developer--beginning or advanced. Completely revised and updated, this 2nd edition begins with some simple examples to familiarize you with the basic elements of Cocoa programming as well Apple's Developer Tools, including Project Builder and Interface Builder. After introducing you to Project Builder and Interface Builder, it brings you quickly up to speed on the concepts of object-oriented programming with Objective-C, the language of choice for building Cocoa applications. From there, each chapter presents a different sample program for you to build, with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions to teach you the fundamentals of Cocoa programming. The techniques you will learn in each chapter lay the foundation for more advanced techniques and concepts presented in later chapters. You'll learn how to:
- Effectively use Apple's suite of Developer Tools, including Project Builder and Interface Builder
- Build single- and multiple-window document-based applications
- Manipulate text data using Cocoa's text handling capabilities
- Draw with Cocoa
- Add scripting functionality to your applications
- Localize your application for multiple language support
- Polish off your application by adding an icon for use in the Dock, provide Help, and package your program for distribution
Each chapter ends with a series of Examples, challenging you to test your newly-learned skills by tweaking the application you've just built, or to go back to an earlier example and add to it some new functionality. Solutions are provided in the Appendix, but you're encouraged to learn by trying. Extensive programming experience is not required to complete the examples in the book, though experience with the C programming language will be helpful. If you are familiar with an object-oriented programming language such as Java or Smalltalk, you will rapidly come up to speed with the Objective-C language. Otherwise, basic object-oriented and language concepts are covered where needed.

While the Internet has transformed and improved the way we do business, this vast network and its associated technologies have opened the door to an increasing number of security threats. The challenge for successful, public web sites is to encourage access to the site while eliminating undesirable or malicious traffic and to provide sufficient levels of security without constraining performance or scalability. The more reliant organizations become on the Internet to perform daily jobs or conduct transactions, the greater the impact a breach of network security has. Just as Cisco Systems has been an innovator in using the Internet to conduct business, so too is it a market leader in the development and sale of products and technologies that protect data traveling across the Internet. Yet a network security solution is only as strong as its weakest link. Network attacks can occur at any point, including the network connection, the firewall, the web server, or the client. Hardening the defenses at all these points is key to creating an effective, all-encompassing network security solution.
Web Security Field Guide provides you with hands-on, proven solutions to help patch the most common vulnerabilities of Windows(r) web servers and browsers within the context of an end-to-end network security architecture. Avoiding conceptual discussions of underlying technologies, the book spends little time discussing how each application works. Using plain language and lots of step-by-step examples, the book instead focuses on helping you secure your web servers and prevent the majority of network attacks. Divided into five parts, the book opens with an overview of essential background information and helps you establish working network security rules and policies. Parts II through IV teach you the techniques for hardening the operating system, the web server, and the browser. Part V of the book addresses overall network security, focusing on preventing and controlling access. Topics such as becoming a Certification Authority, Cisco PIX(r) Firewall, Cisco IOS(r) Firewall, access lists, ongoing security maintenance, and testing are all examined in-depth, providing an overall network security plan that can drastically reduce the risk to your business systems and data.
Full of diagrams, screen captures, and step-by-step instructions for performing simple tasks that can radically improve the security of your Internet business solutions, Web Security Field Guide is a practical tool that can help ensure the integrity and security of your business-critical applications.

Learning Perl the Hard Way
by Allen B. Downey
Do we really need another Perl book? Well obviously I think so, and here's why:
* I want a book for people who already know how to program in another language, but don't know Perl.
* I want a book that gets through the basics as quickly as possible. I'm sick of reading about the precedence of operators; I want to know how to do the fun stuff.
* I want a book that emphasizes good programming style in Perl. Many of the Perl programs I have seen are written in a quick-and-dirty style; I wanted to see if the style I have developed in other languages can translate.
* In many Perl books, object-oriented programming is treated as an optional feature for advanced programming. I wanted to bring it closer to the center of focus (although I am anything but an object-oriented bigot).
In presenting Perl features, I tried to find examples that are interesting in their own right, and that encourage the reader to explore Perl's features.
This book is a work in progress. I have some ideas about what will go into the next few chapters, but I am open to suggestions. I am looking for interesting programming projects that highlight some of the moderately advances features of Perl, like inter-process communication, the Perl/tk interface, or one of the infinite number of modules on CPAN.
Learning Perl the Hard Way is a free book available under the GNU Free Documentation License. Readers are free to copy and distribute the text; they are also free to modify it, which allows them to adapt the book to different needs, and to help develop new material.
Printable versions of the book are available in PDF and gzipped Postscript. The LaTeX source code (with figures and a Makefile) will be available soon.

Ever wonder why women can brush their teeth while walking and talking on various subjects while men generally find this very difficult to do? Why 99 percent of all patents are registered by men? Why stressed women talk? Why so many husbands hate shopping? According to Barbara and Allan Pease, science now confirms that "the way our brains are wired and the hormones pulsing through our bodies are the two factors that largely dictate, long before we are born, how we will think and behave. Our instincts are simply our genes determining how our bodies will behave in given sets of circumstances." That's right: socialization, politics, or upbringing aside, men and women have profound brain differences and are intrinsically inclined to act in distinct--and consequently frustrating--ways.
The premises behind Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps is that all too often, these differences get in the way of fulfilling relationships and that understanding our basic urges can lead to greater self-awareness and improved relations between the sexes. The Peases spent three years researching their book--traveling the globe, talking to experts, and studying the cutting-edge research of ethnologists, psychologists, biologists, and neuroscientists--yet their work does not read a bit like "hard science." In fact, the authors go to considerable lengths to point out that their book is intended to be funny, interesting, and easy to read; in short, this is a book whose primary purpose is to talk about "average men and women, that is, how most men and women behave most of the time, in most situations, and for most of the past."
Why Men Don't Listen, therefore, deals largely in generalizations, and this is bound to alienate some readers. "We don't beat around the bush with suppositions or politically correct clichés," the Peases claim. Those up for an irreverent and unapologetic take on why men and women just can't help themselves sometimes may just decide to read on.

Book Description: )
Business applications are designed using profound knowledge about the business domain, such as domain objects, fundamental domain-related principles, and domain patterns. Nonetheless, the pattern community's ideas for software engineering have not impacted at the application level, they are still mostly used for technical problems.
This book takes exactly this step: it shows you how to apply the pattern ideas in business applications and presents more than 20 structural and behavioral business patterns that use the REA (resources, events, agents) pattern as a common backbone. If you are a developer working on business frameworks, you can use the patterns presented to derive the right abstractions (e.g., business objects) and to design and ensure that the meta-rules (e.g., process patterns) are followed by the developers of the actual applications. And if you are an application developer, you can use these patterns to design your business application, to ensure that it does not violate the domain rules, and to adapt the application to changing requirements without the need to change the overall architecture. As with patterns in general, this approach allows for both more flexible and more solid software architectures and hence better software quality.
"It's a great book, marvelous in breadth and depth. An impressive achievement. I particularly liked the modeling handbook examples." Bob Haugen, Business Technology Consultant and Contributor to REA standardization in ISO, UN/CEFACT and ebXML, UK
"I enjoyed reading it very much, it gave many new insights into REA and its applications." Paul Johannesson, Stockholm University and Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
"This book by Pavel Hruby is destined to become a landmark in business modeling. Pavel heralds the replacement of traditional workflow-oriented modeling with a new breed of approaches that focus on delivering change-resilient and highly reusable business models. I highly recommend this book to you!" Krzysztof Czarnecki, University of Waterloo, Canada]

Book Description: )
An important aspect of multi agent systems are agent reasoning techniques for problem solving, either at the level of a single agent or at the level of distributed collaboration amongst multiple agents. Constraint satisfaction problems are significant in the domain of automated reasoning for artificial intelligence. They can be applied to modeling and solving of a wide range of combinatorial applications such as planning, scheduling and resource sharing in a variety of practical domains e.g. transportation, production, supply-chains, network management, and human resource management. In this book we study new techniques for solving constraint satisfaction problems, with a special focus on solution adaptation applied to agent reasoning. Most work in constraint satisfaction has focused on computing a solution to a given problem. In practice, it often occurs that an existing solution needs to be modified to satisfy additional criteria or accommodate changes in the problem. Based on constraint satisfaction problem structures and their symmetries, we develop techniques for adapting solutions in applications and show how these techniques can be used when the agent is situated in dynamic and distributed environments.
This book is addressed to researchers in the artificial intelligence domain who are interested in constraint satisfaction techniques for agent reasoning. Moreover, as these methods are important for many applications such as planning, scheduling, diagnosis and resource allocation, researchers and application engineers in these domains will also benefit from applying the techniques described in this book.

- Description:Capability Maturity Model Integration(SM) (CMMI) has rapidly become a preferred means of improving organizational processes in industry and government. Building on a decade of work with process improvement models, including the Capability Maturity Model(R) (CMM(R)) for Software and the Systems Engineering Capability Model, a team of over two hundred engineering and process improvement experts worked for three years to create this broader, more agile instrument for guiding, integrating, and appraising improvement activities. CMMI provides a single, integrated framework for improving processes throughout an organization, enhancing the quality and efficiency of the organization as a whole.
The CMMI Product Suite is rich in detail and guidance, but correspondingly large and somewhat complex. The sheer volume of information it presents can seem overwhelming. CMMI Distilled reduced that complexity with a fresh and approachable introduction to the key elements of CMMI and integrated process improvement.
This new edition of CMMI Distilled, updated for CMMI version 1.1, includes more material in layman's language to meet a wider variety of reader's needs, but has not lost any of the technical content that made the first edition so successful. Written for those new to model-based process improvement, it also offers insights that can help even battle-scarred process improvement veterans and experienced systems, software and quality engineers perform better. CMMI(R) Distilled, Second Edition is especially appropriate for executives and managers who need to understand why process improvement is valuable, why CMMI is a tool of choice, and how to maximize the return on their efforts and investments.
The three authors have been involved with CMMI since its inception, and they bring a wealth of their own experience and knowledge to this book. They highlight the pitfalls and short cuts that are all too often learned by costly experience. Above all, they provide a context for understanding why CMMI is the fastest growing process improvement framework in the world.

Book Description: )
The last several years have seen significant progress on two related fronts in hardware and software design for electronic systems. The first is the rapid growth in the design of complex System-on-Chip devices (SoC). The second is progress in adding capabilities to the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to better support the design of real-time and embedded systems, culminating in the UML 2.0 specification which is nearing final approval. It is thus an excellent time to evaluate the combination of these two topics into a unified theme: UML for SoC design. At DAC 2004, we organized a UML and SoC workshop as a discussion forum to bring hardware, SoC, and UML experts together. For that workshop, we received great international interest and contributions from Asia, Europe, and North America. The success of the workshop has demonstrated that there is a great interest in both academia and industry to create and investigate joint efforts in SoC design and UML. This book is a collection of the main contributors of the DAC 2004 UML and SoC workshop, providing the first set of papers for such a joint effort. Some additional contributions to the book were made by other experts who did not present at the workshop. The selected chapters present approaches to executable UML, UML translations for FPGA synthesis and SystemC simulation, as well as UML-specific SoC methodologies. They give insights into the current state of the art, and the most recent advances in applying UML to SoC design. They provide a representative overview of current UML activities in SoC design and give an excellent introduction to UML’s application in hardware and hardware/software codesign.

Download Details: Editorial Reviews Book Description A fresh perspective on predicting the market The experience of Wall Street investment manager and analyst Michael McDonald offers a new perspective on how to navigate the turbulent ups and downs of the markets. His innovative approach to the stock market teaches investors how to use new investment strategies intended to replace the "buy and hold forever" strategies of yesterday. McDonald discusses what a "trading range" market is-a roller-coaster ride in which the market will neither gain nor lose much ground-and guides readers through this market with his proven investment strategies. This book provides an understandable way to make sense of the unpredictable stock market, taking into account more complex theories, including chaos and contrarian approaches. Along with his expert advice, McDonald presents four investing paradoxes that will help investors make smarter decisions now and predict where the market is heading, using his proven theories. From the Inside Flap Predict Market Swings With Technical Analysis The efficient market theory concludes that stock prices are essentially random and unpredictable. So how do thousands of professionals earn a living each year on Wall Street by predicting stock prices? The answer is quite simple–by using techniques that allow for a stock market that can at times become predictable. Let Wall Street financial consultant and market analyst Michael McDonald show you how to navigate the turbulent ups and downs of the market in Predict Market Swings with Technical Analysis. This fresh approach to trading using technical analysis will teach you how to trade the swings of the market by catching the upswings and selling just before major downswings. With the help of a few ideas from chaos theory, McDonald introduces you to a new model that is more accurate than the efficient market model, is closer to the ideas most traders have of the market, and allows for a market that is at times predictable. You’ll learn how to use this model to align and integrate various pieces of stock market information that were previously confusing or at odds and then start to trade for maximum profits. You’ll also learn about the specific parts of this model, including "fair value"–represented as D/I (dividends over interest rates)–which represents important economic factors. McDonald continues his in-depth analysis by exploring the area of technical analysis and revealing how it can help locate markets that are unstable and ready to experience a possible feedback loop movement. You’ll learn how to find the beginning and end of major swings–using decision-making tools such as contrary opinion indicators–that will form the trading range, as well as how to navigate the trading range market once it appears. Besides explaining the model he uses to understand stock market movements, McDonald also reveals how new discoveries in chaos theory help explain the fractal nature of stock price charts and then moves on to provide a firmer theoretical foundation for the controversial Elliot Wave theory. McDonald rounds out this comprehensive trading guide by offering a broad outline of the possible pattern the market will make during its projected sideways run and then presenting his studies on strategies for sideways markets in anticipation of this period. Through expert advice, real-world examples, and proven trading techniques, Predict Market Swings with Technical Analysis will help you make profitable trading decisions today and accurate predictions of market movements tomorrow.

Book Description: )
Partial differential equations (PDEs) and variational methods were introduced into image processing about fifteen years ago. Since then, intensive research has been carried out. The goals of this book are to present a variety of image analysis applications, the precise mathematics involved and how to discretize them.
Thus, this book is intended for two audiences. The first is the mathematical community by showing the contribution of mathematics to this domain. It is also the occasion to highlight some unsolved theoretical questions. The second is the computer vision community by presenting a clear, self-contained and global overview of the mathematics involved in image processing problems. This work will serve as a useful source of reference and inspiration for fellow researchers in Applied Mathematics and Computer Vision, as well as being a basis for advanced courses within these fields.
During the four years since the publication of the first edition, there has been substantial progress in the range of image processing applications covered by the PDE framework. The main goals of the second edition are to update the first edition by giving a coherent account of some of the recent challenging applications, and to update the existing material. In addition, this book provides the reader with the opportunity to make his own simulations with a minimal effort. To this end, programming tools are made available, which will allow the reader to implement and test easily some classical approaches.

Book Description: )
The continuing development of implantable neural prostheses signals a new era in bioengineering and neuroscience research. This collection of essays outlines current advances in research on the intracranial implantation of devices that can communicate with the brain in order to restore sensory, motor, or cognitive functions. The contributors explore the creation of biologically realistic mathematical models of brain function, the production of microchips that incorporate those models, and the integration of microchip and brain function through neuron-silicon interfaces. Recent developments in understanding the computational and cognitive properties of the brain and rapid advances in biomedical and computer engineering both contribute to this cutting-edge research.
The book first examines the development of sensory system prostheses -- cochlear, retinal, and visual implants -- as the best foundation for considering the extension of neural prostheses to the central brain region. The book then turns to the complexity of neural representations, offering, among other approaches to the topic, one of the few existing theoretical frameworks for modeling the hierarchical organization of neural systems. Next, it examines the challenges of designing and controlling the interface between neurons and silicon, considering the necessity for bidirectional communication and for multiyear duration of the implant. Finally, the book looks at hardware implementations and explores possible ways to achieve the complexity of neural function in hardware, including the use of VLSI and photonic technologies.

Summary:
Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. The treatment emphasizes unifying principles, showing how common mechanisms link seemingly disparate reactions. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set. The author has drawn on his own research and the current literature to ensure that appropriate attention is given to topics across the range of modern organic chemistry. The text is unique in its inclusion of a chapter on reactions mediated or catalyzed by transition metals, an area in which mechanistic understanding is now essential. Relatively new topics such as olefin metathesis and cycloaromatization are covered without giving short shrift to more traditional areas such as carbonyl chemistry. The text assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. It can be used either in a formal course or by students working on their own, and will be particularly useful for graduate students studying for qualifying examinations. It will also be useful to students and researchers in biochemistry, pharmacology, and inorganic chemistry. "This is an excellent and well-presented work.... The author ... has succeeded well in treating the central ideas of reactivity and selectivity in an integrated whole. The clear style of writing, the well chosen examples, and the ... concise summaries of the main points provided at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to easily consolidate what has been learned.... The book is indeed a little work of art." -- Jens Hartung, Angewandte Chemie International Edition "I have taught a one-credit course with this book for three years, and, uniformly, the students have rated this book highly for its clarity and for the scope of the problems. ... This book does an excellent job at its stated goal: 'to teach students to come up with reasonable mechanisms for reactions they have never seen before.'" -- Amy Howell, Synthesis "I have just finished my first year of graduate studies in organic chemistry at Duke University. I just wanted to let you know how much your book got me through the past year of course work.... When it came to mechanisms, I found the clarity and thoroughness I needed only in your book. It was impressive how you were able to present so much information in a clear and comprehensive manner yet keep the book so manageable in size. In addition to the text, I also was able to benefit from the problems.... Great practice!! The on-line answers are much better than looking up answers by reference.... I am reading it again this summer in preparation for my preliminary exam next spring." -- David Gooden

Book Description: )
With the ever increasing use of computers for critical systems, computer security that protects data and computer systems from intentional, malicious intervention, continues to attract attention. Among the methods for defense, the application of a tool to help the operator identify ongoing or already perpetrated attacks (intrusion detection), has been the subject of considerable research in the past ten years. A key problem with current intrusion detection systems is the high number of false alarms they produce. Understanding Intrusion Detection through Visualization presents research on why false alarms are, and will remain a problem; then applies results from the field of information visualization to the problem of intrusion detection. This approach promises to enable the operator to identify false (and true) alarms, while aiding the operator to identify other operational characteristics of intrusion detection systems. This volume presents four different visualization approaches, mainly applied to data from web server access logs.

Cross-layer design seeks to enhance the capacity of wireless networks significantly through the joint optimization of multiple layers in the network, primarily the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers. Although there are advantages of such design in wireline networks as well, this approach is particularly advantageous for wireless networks due to the properties (such as mobility and interference) that strongly affect performance and design of higher layer protocols. This unique monograph is concerned with the issue of cross-layer design in wireless networks, and more particularly with the impact of node-level multiuser detection on such design. It provides an introduction to this vibrant and active research area insufficiently covered in existing literature, presenting some of the principal methods developed and results obtained to date. Accompanied by numerous illustrations, the text is an excellent reference for engineers, researchers and students working in communication networks.

Summary:
If patterns are good ideas that can be re-applied to new situations,
AntiPatterns: Refactoring Software, Architectures, and Projects in Crisis looks at what goes wrong in software development, time and time again. This entertaining and often enlightening text defines what seasoned developers have long suspected: despite advances in software engineering, most software projects still fail to meet expectations--and about a third are cancelled altogether.
The authors of
AntiPatterns draw on extensive industry experience, their own and others, to help define what's wrong with software development today. They outline reasons why problem patterns develop (such as sloth, avarice, and greed) and proceed to outline several dozen patterns that can give you headaches or worse.
Their deadliest hit list begins with the Blob, where one object does most of the work in a project, and Continuous Obsolescence, where technology changes so quickly that developers can't keep up. Some of the more entertaining antipatterns include the Poltergeist (where do-nothing classes add unnecessary overhead), the Boat Anchor (a white elephant piece of hardware or software bought at great cost) and the Golden Hammer (a single technology that is used for every conceivable programming problem). The authors then proceed to define antipatterns oriented toward management problems with software (including Death by Planning and Project Mismanagement, along with several miniature antipatterns, that help define why so many software projects are late and overbudget).
The authors use several big vendors' technologies as examples of today's antipatterns. Luckily, they suggest ways to overcome antipatterns and improve software productivity in "refactored solutions" that can overcome some of these obstacles. However, this is a realistic book, a mix of "Dilbert" and software engineering. A clever antidote to getting too optimistic about software development,
AntiPatterns should be required reading for any manager facing a large-scale development project

Book Description: )
"Number Theory in Science and Communication" is a well-known introduction for non-mathematicians to this fascinating and useful branch of applied mathematics . It stresses intuitive understanding rather than abstract theory and highlights important concepts such as continued fractions, the golden ratio, quadratic residues and Chinese remainders, trapdoor functions, pseudoprimes and primitive elements. Their applications to problems in the real world are one of the main themes of the book. This revised fourth edition is augmented by recent advances in primes in progressions, twin primes, prime triplets, prime quadruplets and quintruplets, factoring with elliptic curves, quantum factoring, Golomb rulers and "baroque" integers.
From reviews of earlier editions –
"I continue to find [Schroeder’s] Number Theory a goldmine of valuable information. It is a marvellous book, in touch with the most recent applications of number theory and written with great clarity and humor.’ Philip Morrison (Scientific American)
"A light-hearted and readable volume with a wide range of applications to which the author has been a productive contributor – useful mathematics outside the formalities of theorem and proof." Martin Gardner

Book Description: )
The art, craft, discipline, logic, practice, and science of developing large-scale software products needs a believable, professional base. The textbooks in this three-volume set combine informal, engineeringly sound practice with the rigour of formal, mathematics-based approaches. Volume 3 is based on the maxim: "Before software can be designed its requirements must be well understood, and before the requirements can be expressed properly the domain of the application must be well understood." This book covers the process from the development of domain descriptions, via the derivation of requirements prescriptions from domain models, to the refinement of requirements into software designs, i.e., architectures and component design. Emphasis is placed on what goes into proper domain descriptions and requirements prescriptions, how one acquires and analyses the domain knowledge and requirements expectations, and how one validates and verifies domain and requirements models. The reader can take an informal route through Vol. 3, and this would be suitable for undergraduate courses on software engineering. Advanced students, lecturers, and researchers may instead follow the formal route through Vol. 3, and in this case Vol. 1 is a prerequisite text. Lecturers will be supported with a comprehensive guide to designing modules based on the textbooks, with solutions to many of the exercises presented, and with a complete set of lecture slides.

Book Description: )
This textbook introduces software engineering to advanced-level undergraduate and graduate students of computer science. It emphasizes a case-study approach whereby a project is developed through the course of the book, illustrating the different activities of software development. The sequence of chapters is essentially the same as the sequence of activities performed during a typical software project. The revised edition updates this sequence for today's standards and adds a valuable chapter on architecture. All activities, including quality assurance and control activities, are described in each chapter as integral activities for that phase of development. Similarly, the author carefully introduces appropriate metrics for controlling and assessing the software process. The text is bolstered by numerous examples, chapter summaries, a helpful bibliography, and good index.

Book Description: )
Researchers in data management have recently recognized the importance of a new class of data-intensive applications that requires managing data streams, i.e., data composed of continuous, real-time sequence of items. Streaming applications pose new and interesting challenges for data management systems. Such application domains require queries to be evaluated continuously as opposed to the one time evaluation of a query for traditional applications. Streaming data sets grow continuously and queries must be evaluated on such unbounded data sets. These, as well as other challenges, require a major rethink of almost all aspects of traditional database management systems to support streaming applications.
Stream Data Management comprises eight invited chapters by researchers active in stream data management. The collected chapters provide exposition of algorithms, languages, as well as systems proposed and implemented for managing streaming data.
Stream Data Management is designed to appeal to researchers or practitioners already involved in stream data management, as well as to those starting out in this area. This book is also suitable for graduate students in computer science interested in learning about stream data management.

Book Description: )Modern society depends critically on computers that control and manage the systems on which we depend in many aspects of our daily lives. While this provides conveniences of a level unimaginable just a few years ago, it also leaves us vulnerable to attacks on the computers managing these systems. In recent times the explosion in cyber attacks, including viruses, worms, and intrusions, has turned this vulnerability into a clear and visible threat. Due to the escalating number and increased sophistication of cyber attacks, it has become important to develop a broad range of techniques, which can ensure that the information infrastructure continues to operate smoothly, even in the presence of dire and continuous threats.
This book brings together the latest techniques for managing cyber threats, developed by some of the world’s leading experts in the area. The book includes broad surveys on a number of topics, as well as specific techniques. It provides an excellent reference point for researchers and practitioners in the government, academic, and industrial communities who want to understand the issues and challenges in this area of growing worldwide importance.

This volume offers a wide spectrum of sample works developed in leading research throughout the world about innovative methodologies of swarm intelligence and foundations of engineering swarm intelligent systems as well as applications and interesting experiences using the particle swarm optimisation. Swarm intelligence is an innovative computational way to solve hard problems. In particular, particle swarm optimization, also commonly known as PSO, mimics the behavior of a swarm of insects or a school of fish. If one of the particle discovers a good path to food the rest of the swarm will be able to follow instantly even if they are far away in the swarm. Swarm behavior is modeled by particles in multidimensional space that have two characteristics: a position and a velocity. These particles wander around the hyperspace and remember the best position that they have discovered. They communicate good positions to each other and adjust their own position and velocity based on these good positions.

A note: If you are playing Third Edition Shadowrun and don't feel like collecting old source material, skip this book completely (it is replaced by a newer sourcebook, as is its companion, Fields of Fire).
That said: Unlike some of the later sourcebooks, most things here are actually useful while not being overpowered. In addition, it gives a better range of items to choose from within a class (for example, you're not limited to only 4 light pistols).
If you are looking for more toys for your compaign, get this book. If you prefer a better idea of how to play a Street Samurai, don't look here. There's almost nothing on tips or hints in this book. Cybertechnology and Fields of Fire are much more useful for the hows and whys of playing street sams.

Book Description: )
Requirements engineering is the process by which the requirements for software systems are gathered, analyzed, documented, and managed throughout their complete lifecycle. Traditionally it has been concerned with technical goals for, functions of, and constraints on software systems. Aurum and Wohlin, however, argue that it is no longer appropriate for software systems professionals to focus only on functional and non-functional aspects of the intended system and to somehow assume that organizational context and needs are outside their remit. Instead, they call for a broader perspective in order to gain a better understanding of the interdependencies between enterprise stakeholders, processes, and software systems, which would in turn give rise to more appropriate techniques and higher-quality systems. Following an introductory chapter that provides an exploration of key issues in requirements engineering, the book is organized in three parts. Part 1 presents surveys of state-of-the art requirements engineering process research along with critical assessments of existing models, frameworks and techniques. Part 2 addresses key areas in requirements engineering, such as market-driven requirements engineering, goal modeling, requirements ambiguity, and others. Part 3 concludes the book with articles that present empirical evidence and experiences from practices in industrial projects. Its broader perspective gives this book its distinct appeal and makes it of interest to both researchers and practitioners, not only in software engineering but also in other disciplines such as business process engineering and management science.

Book Description: )
The computer hardware and software industry is committed to using formal methods. As a result, it is crucial that students who take automata theory and logic courses retain what they have learned and understand how to use their knowledge. Yet many textbooks typically emphasize automata theory only, not logic, thus losing a valuable opportunity to tie these subjects together and reinforce learning. In fact, automata theory and logic evolved hand-in-hand, yet this connection was severed in the '70s as separate automata-theory and logic courses became possible. Now, with computer science departments suffering from overcrowded syllabi, it is often possible for undergraduates to get a BS without having had to take a course in mathematical logic!
Today's students want to know how knowledge can work for them -- learning theory as a tool is preferable to learning theory for theory's sake. To prove that theoretical tenents are not only applicable, but also necessary and relevant, useful examples must be presented. This textbook uses interactive tools throughout, such as simple BDD and SAT tools. By providing a blend of theory and practical applications the material is shown to be both inviting and current. Topics are also illustrated in multiple domains so that information is reinforced and students can begin to tie automata theory and logic together. They will also learn multiple uses of fixed-points, including BDD based model checking and understanding context-free productions.
Having used this book, students will not only know and understand automata theory, but also be able to apply their knowledge in real practice.

Book Description: )
Including easily digested information about fundamental techniques and concepts in software construction, this book is distinct in unifying pure theory with pragmatic details. Driven by generic problems and concepts, with brief and complete illustrations from languages including C, Prolog, Java, Scheme, Haskell and HTML. This book is intended to be both a how-to handbook and easy reference guide. Discussions of principle, worked examples and exercises are presented. All concepts outside introductory programming are explained with clear demarcation and dependencies so the experienced programmer can quickly locate material. Readable in a linear manner, with short mono-thematic to encourage dipping and reference. Also included are sections on open problems in software theory and practice. While little other than a novice programmer's knowledge is explicitly assumed, a certain conceptual maturity, either through commercial programming or academic training is required – each language is introduced and explained briefly as needed.

Have you ever spent hours coding workflow for your applications? If so, the new Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) technology will make your life easier. Foundations of WF: An Introduction to Windows Workflow Foundation introduces you to using Visual Studio 2005 and the Windows Workflow Foundation (part of Windows Vista) to create workflow packages. The book begins by giving you an overview of Windows Workflow Foundation. Then it introduces and shows examples of the various types of workflow that can be created.
You'll discover the power of WF. You'll learn about all the prebuild activities you can include in your workflow, along with how to create your own activities. WF is fully extensible and allows you an unlimited number of options for your workflow. You'll also learn how to use workflow activities to retrieve data, and finally, how to tie an ASP.NET application with a workflow built in WF.
This book, unlike most of the Microsoft WF samples, has code in both VB .NET and C#. All the examples--and there are many--have VB .NET code, and many have the accompanying C# code. This book will allow you to begin creating new workflow applications easily in either VB .NET or C#. Each chapter includes an introduction to one or more activities that make up WF, along with examples of how to use each activity. Many chapters include a final section providing a real world example (a purchase order system). This book will have you using WF to create workflow applications with VB .NET or C# in a short amount of time.

Objective Caml (OCaml) is an open source programming language that allows you to utilize both functional and object-oriented programming. Sporting features such as a robust object system, type safety, and an expansive standard library, OCaml is a language that encourages pragmatic solutions instead of dogmatic ones. Boasting performance on par with the likes of C/C++, and having compilers available for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Unix, Linux, and Mac OS X, enterprise developers should consider adding this powerful language to their repertoire.
Written for experienced programmers, Practical OCaml teaches OCaml in a code-intensive fashion. Readers are encouraged to follow along with most examples using the OCaml top-level (the interactive interpreter), giving them the opportunity to consider the purpose and syntax of each line. The author's considerable knowledge of the Java, Python, and C++ languages allows him to present the material at a level and perspective that readers hailing from varied programming backgrounds will appreciate.
Language aficionados will be sure to enjoy the occasional digression into tangential topics such as OCaml's impurities from the functional programming perspective, with thoughts about how to overcome them using mutability, references, and classes.
Key topics include
- Primitive and composite types
- Collections
- File and I/O
- Modules and functors
- Ocamllex and Ocamlyacc
- OCamldoc
- Threading
- The Camlp4 preprocessor and pretty printer
In later chapters, you'll put what you've learned to work, building applications capable of performing complex log-file processing, crawling the Web, filtering spam, and even broadcasting audio over a network using the Shoutcast protocol.

Scilab is a free open-source software package for scientific computation. It includes hundreds of general purpose and specialized functions for numerical computation, organized in libraries called toolboxes, which cover such areas as simulation, optimization, systems and control, and signal processing. One important Scilab toolbox is Scicos. Scicos provides a block diagram graphical editor for the construction and simulation of dynamical systems. The objective of this book is to provide a tutorial for the use of Scilab/Scicos with a special emphasis on modeling and simulation tools. While it will provide useful information to experienced users it is designed to be accessible to beginning users from a variety of disciplines. Students and academic and industrial scientists and engineers should find it useful.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part concerns Scilab and includes a tutorial covering the language features, the data structures and specialized functions for doing graphics, importing, exporting data and interfacing external routines. It also covers in detail Scilab numerical solvers for ordinary differential equations and differential-algebraic equations. Even though the emphasis is placed on modeling and simulation applications, this part provides a global view of Scilab. The second part is dedicated to modeling and simulation of dynamical systems in Scicos. This type of modeling tool is widely used in industry because it provides a means for constructing modular and reusable models. This part contains a detailed description of the editor and its usage, which is illustrated through numerous examples. All codes used in the book is made available to the reader.

For young art lovers
On library day at school my daughter usually brings home an art book of some kind. Most of the time it was a book by Lee J. Ames. Marissa really wants to draw well but at 8 doesn't understand that you have to work hard at it. I suggested to her that she get a piece of white paper and trace over the drawings and then color them in. She has really made some beautiful drawings using this book.

Path to Finding Technical Perfection...
and that ain't an easy pathway to find, believe me. I love Barth's insistance on using only the most traditional methods, when there are multiple techniques that could be covered. His instructions are so clearly illustrated and explained that I've actually gotten a grip on a method that I have failed to understand for years and am presently using to cover a walking stick with - traditional style gourd stitch. Most books simply teach the two step method and don't even mention the older, three step method and when they do, their instructions tend to be so confusing that I end up with a stick wrapped in a tangled net of tiny beads and thread. But thanks to Barth, I finally get it!
The other methods he covers, lane stitch, loomwork, diagonal weaving and others, he covers with equal clarity and skill and I'm looking forward to using this book to upgrade my abilities and make my art jewelry better than ever!

To whom should we ascribe the great flowering of the arts in Renaissance Italy? Artists like Botticelli and Michelangelo? Or wealthy, discerning patrons like Cosimo de'Medici? In recent years, scholars have attributed great importance to the role played by patrons, arguing that some should even be regarded as artists in their own right. This approach receives sharp challenge in Jill Burke's Changing Patrons, a book that draws heavily upon the author's discoveries in Florentine archives, tracing the many profound transformations in patrons' relations to the visual world of fifteenth-century Florence. Looking closely at two of the city's upwardly mobile families, Burke demonstrates that they approached the visual arts from within a grid of social, political, and religious concerns. Art for them often served as a mediator of social difference and a potent means of signifying status and identity.
Changing Patrons combines visual analysis with techniques from history and anthropology to propose new interpretations of the art created by, among others, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi, and Raphael. Genuinely interdisciplinary, the book also casts light on broad issues of identity, power relations, and the visual arts in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance.

In most current natural language systems each query is treated as an isolated request for information regardless of its context in dialogue. Sandra Carberry addresses the problem of creating computational strategies that can improve user-computer communication by assimilating ongoing dialogue and reasoning on the acquired knowledge.
Plan Recognition in Natural Language Dialogue critically examines plan recognition - the inference of an agent's goals and how he or she intends to achieve them. It describes significant models of plan inference and presents in detail the author's own model, which infers new goals from user utterances and integrates them into the system's model of the user's plan, incrementally expanding and adding detail to its beliefs about what the information seeker wants to do. Carberry then outlines computational strategies for interpreting two kinds of problematic utterances: utterances that violate the pragmatic rules of the system's world model and intersentential elliptical fragments. She also suggests directions for future research.
Sandra Carberry is Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware. Plan Recognition in Natural Language Dialogue is included in the ACL-MIT Press Series in Natural Language Processing edited by Aravind Joshi.

Book Description:
An exploration of a new approach to text generation that interprets systemic grammar as a computational representation. Patten demonstrates that systemic grammar can be easily and automatically translated into current AI-knowledge representations and efficiently processed by the same knowledge-based techniques currently exploited by expert systems. Thus, the fundamental methodological problem of interfacing specialized computational representations with equally specialized linguisticrepresentations can be resolved. The study provides a detailed discussion of the formal model proposed and of a substantial implementation including a relatively large systemic grammar. It represents a fundamental and productive contribution to the literature of text generation.

Summary:
This book is a comprehensive guide to using OpenVPN for building both secure VPNs. The book is written in a very friendly style that makes this complex topic easy and a joy to read. It first covers basic VPN concepts, then moves to introduce basic OpenVPN configurations, before covering advanced uses of OpenVPN. It's suitable for both experienced and new OpenVPN users.
OpenVPN is a powerful, open source SSL VPN application. It can secure site-to-site connections, WiFi and enterprise-scale remote connections. While being a full-featured VPN solution, OpenVPN is easy to use and does not suffer from the complexity that characterizes other IPSec VPN implementations. It uses the secure and stable TLS/SSL mechanisms for authentication and encryption.
This book is an easy introduction to this popular VPN application. After introducing the basics of security and VPN, the book moves on to cover using OpenVPN, from installing it on various platforms, through configuring basic tunnels, to more advanced features, such as using the application with firewalls, routers, proxy servers, and OpenVPN scripting. While providing the necessary theoretical background, the book takes a practical approach, presenting plenty of examples.
What you will learn from this book
Chapter 1 looks at what VPNs are, how they evolved during the last decade, why it is necessary to modern Benterprises, how typical VPNs work. The chapter also covers some essential networking concepts.
Chapter 2 explains VPN security issues, including symmetric and asymmetric encryption, the SSL/TLS library, and SSL certificates.
Chapter 3 introduces OpenVPN. In this chapter, we learn about the history of OpenVPN, how OpenVPN works, and how OpenVPN compares to IPSec VPN applications.
Chapter 4 covers installing OpenVPN on both Windows, the Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD. It covers the installation on Linux from the source code and RPM packages. Installation on Suse and Debian is covered in detail.
Chapter 5. Here an encryption key for OpenVPN is created and it is then used to setup up our first OpenVPN Tunnel between two windows systems in the same network. The key is then copied on a Linux system and this system is connected through a tunnel to the first windows machine.
Chapter 6 shows how to create x509 server and client certificates for use with OpenVPN. easy-rsa which comes with OpenVPN and is available for both Windows and Linux is used.
Chapter 7 reviews the syntax of the command line tool openvpn, which enables building tunnels quickly. The configuration options of openvpn are covered in detail with examples.
Chapter 8 shows how to make the example tunnels created earlier safer and persistent by choosing a reliable combination of configuration file parameters. It then covers how to configure firewalls on Linux and Windows to work with OpenVPN.
Chapter 9 focuses on using xca, the advanced Windows tool with which x509 certificates can be easily managed. Its Linux equivalent, Tinyca2, which can even manage multiple certificate authorities, is also covered.
Chapter 10 covers advanced OpenVPN configurations, including Tunneling through a proxy server, pushing routing commands to clients, pushing and setting the default route through a tunnel, Distributed compilation through VPN tunnels with distcc, and OpenVPN scripting.
Chapter 11 shows how to debug and monitor VPN tunnels. It covers standard networking tools that can be used for scanning and testing the connectivity of a VPN server.
Who this book is written for
Network administrators and any one who is interested in building secure VPNs using OpenVPN. It presumes basic knowledge of Linux, but no knowledge of VPNs is required. All basic VPN and relevant security concepts are covered.

Summary:
In this unique and startling collection of portraits following Naked New York, we see the "beautiful people" of Los Angeles first clothed, then completely naked. The people of Los Angeles are men and women of all shapes, ages, colors, and professions living in a city famed for its Hollywood glamour and perpetual summer. Photographed outdoors we see a magician, screenwriter, trapeze artist, unemployed surfer, filmmaker, casting director, aerospace engineer, and many more. This serious and, at the same time, amusing group of portraits shows the surprising differences and not so surprising similarities we have to one another clothed and unclothed. Unlike traditional nude photography, these portraits don't have erotic or sexual overtones; they are simply real people who reveal both their clothed public selves and their naked private selves. Greg Friedler's work as a documentary photographer is a kind of anthropological survey of people. If clothing is a voluntary choice, unclothed we see people in an involuntary state-we see their bodies as we see their faces, unmasked. These images are at once deeply intimate and refreshingly matter of fact.

Summary:
Written especially for those readers coming to VB.NET from an earlier version of Visual Basic,
VB.NET in a Nutshell offers a quick language tour as well as a nicely thorough reference to all standard VB objects, methods, and properties. Even if you are a raw beginner, this concise reference is really all you need to get onboard with the new version of the world's most popular programming language.
The first sections of this text zero in on what's new and different in VB.NET. From the basics of the language, centering on data types and object-oriented features, this quick-start guide highlights essential language features that every VB.NET programmer needs to know. There's also material here on the underlying .NET framework, from deployment basics (like .NET assemblies) to built-in namespaces. Coverage of delegates and event handling shows how to process events. The substantially different exception handling model of VB.NET is contrasted with the older ways of handling errors.
The heart of this title has to be its reference material (over 400 pages), primarily on the built-in core VB classes in the new .NET version. While there were rumors that VB.NET changed VB completely, this material should reassure you. By providing APIs that resemble older versions, VB programmers still can leverage common string, date, and time and other functions. Every object, method, and property is described, along with sample code, and differences with VB6. A standout here are "gotchas" when using the new APIs compared to VB6. Besides objects and APIs, there is also coverage of language keywords (for logical, looping, and branching statements), too.
The book closes with several useful reference sections, one of which details all the new features to be found in VB.NET. This is almost a must-read for anyone facing the new VB.NET for the first time. Another appendix here lists VB.NET language APIs. While it's true that you can use many languages with .NET,
VB.NET Language in a Nutshell covers the APIs that will give VB.NET its real flavor as a new programming language. Both a quick-start guide and a worthwhile reference to use everyday at your desk, this title is a great way to start using VB.NET in real projects quickly.
--Richard Dragan Topics covered:

Introduction to VB.NET
Variables and data types (including arrays, collections and parameter, and arguments)
Object-oriented programming in VB.NET (classes, inheritance, polymorphism and overloading)
Overview of the .NET Framework
The Common Language Runtime (CLR)
Managed execution
Assemblies and VB.NET
.NET namespaces (including the system namespace)
Delegates and events
Error handling in VB.NET (including exception handling techniques)
Comprehensive language reference to VB.NET objects
Methods and properties (including sample code, programming tips/gotchas, VB.NET vs. VB6 differences)
Reference to what's new in VB.NET
Language elements and operators in VB.NET
Using the VB.NET command-line compiler
Unsupported VB 6 language elements
Editorial Reviews

Dave Barry's humor speaks for itself. Barry on dating: "These are nonstereotypical times we live in, by which I mean that it is the responsibility of the man to ask for the date, and the responsibility of the woman to think up excuses that get progressively more obvious until the man figures out that the woman would rather chew on a rat pancreas." Barry on falling in love: "When two people have been on enough dates, they generally fall in love. You can tell you're in love by the way you feel: your head becomes light, your heart leaps within you, you feel like you're walking on air, and the whole world seems like a wonderful and happy place. Unfortunately these are also the four warning signs of colon disease, so it's always a good idea to check with your doctor." If you think you might be in danger of having a date, falling in love, or getting married, buy this book immediately.
From Publishers Weekly
Syndicated columnist Barry is just as funny here as in his previous humor books, Babies and Other Hazards of Sex and Claw Your Way to the Top. With a jaundiced eye, he comments on dating and marriage: opening lines ("How about that Middle East?"); French kissing "a really sexy thing to do, according to the French people, although you should bear in mind that they also like to eat snails"; Disney World honeymoons "They say 'honeymooning in Florida' because they don't want people to know that the highlight of the whole wild lustful romantic adventure was shaking hands with Goofy"; grounds for divorce "wearing shorts and black knee socks at the same time". In addition to the litany of love-life lunacies, there are O'Brien's 60 entertaining illustrations, including maps, pie charts, cartoons, diagrams and comic strips. A "funny index" not seen by PW. Book Description: )
Modern cryptology increasingly employs mathematically rigorous concepts and methods from complexity theory. Conversely, current research topics in complexity theory are often motivated by questions and problems from cryptology. This book takes account of this situation, and therefore its subject is what may be dubbed "cryptocomplexity'', a kind of symbiosis of these two areas. This book is written for undergraduate and graduate students of computer science, mathematics, and engineering, and can be used for courses on complexity theory and cryptology, preferably by stressing their interrelation. Moreover, it may serve as a valuable source for researchers, teachers, and practitioners working in these fields. Starting from scratch, it works its way to the frontiers of current research in these fields and provides a detailed overview of their history and their current research topics and challenges.

The Belgian block cipher Rijndael was chosen in 2000 by the U.S. government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be the successor to the Data Encryption Standard. Rijndael was subsequently standardized as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which is potentially the world’s most important block cipher. In 2002, some new analytical techniques were suggested that may have a dramatic effect on the security of the AES. Existing analytical techniques for block ciphers depend heavily on a statistical approach, whereas these new techniques are algebraic in nature.
Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard, appearing five years after publication of the AES, presents the state of the art for the use of such algebraic techniques in analyzing the AES.
The primary audience for this work includes academic and industry researchers in cryptology; the book is also suitable for advanced-level students.

The principles of adaptation to various environments have not yet been clarified. Furthermore, autonomous adaptation remains unsolved and a seriously difficult problem in robotics. Apparently, the adaptation ability shown by animals and that needed by robots in the real world cannot be explained or realized by one single function in a control system and mechanism. That is, adaptation in motion is induced at every level in a wide spectrum from the central neural system to the musculoskeletal system. This book contains the papers selected carefully from the symposium AMAM2003 particularly concerning adaptation in locomotion from the viewpoint of robotics and neurophysiology. Due to this restriction in topics adopted, we expect that this book will efficiently provide good information for scientists and engineers, which is useful to discuss the principles and mechanisms underlying animals' adaptation under unstructured environment .

A fast-paced and practical developer's road map to working with Windows WF, from compilation to the base activity library to runtime services. Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is a technology for defining, executing, and managing workflows. It is part of the .NET Framework 3.0 and will be available natively in the Windows Vista operating system. Windows Workflow Foundation might be the most significant piece of middleware to arrive on the Windows platform since COM+ and the Distributed Transaction Coordinator. The difference is, not every application needs a distributed transaction, but nearly every application does have a workflow encoded inside it. In this book, K Scott Allen, author of renowned .NET articles at www.odetocode.com, provides you with all the information needed to develop successful products with Windows Workflow. From the basics of how Windows Workflow can solve the difficult problems inherent in workflow solutions, through authoring workflows in code, learning about the base activity library in Windows Workflow and the different types of workflow provided, and on to building event-driven workflows using state machines, workflow communications, and finally rules and conditions in Windows Workflow, this book will give you the in-depth information you need. Throughout the book, an example "bug reporting" workflow system is developed, showcasing the technology and techniques used. Fast-paced and to-the-point, this book takes you through the important topics of Windows WF development with clear explanations and practical example code. The book's selection of topics is driven by what the working developer needs to know. It is neither a comprehensive reference to the whole WF architecture, nor a strategy guide to the complete application development lifecycle. It's just what you as a C# developer need to know to use WF in your applications. This book is for .NET developers who want to enhance their applications with flexible workflow capabilities using Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation. The author assumes that you have read other texts on the overall architecture of WF and on WF application design strategies, and instead focuses on real-work implementation issues for C# developers.

Editorial Description:
The rapid evolution of information technology (IT) is transforming our society and its institutions. For the most knowledge-intensive entities of all, research universities, profound IT-related challenges and opportunities will emerge in the next decade or so. Yet, there is a sense that some of the most significant issues are not well understood by academic administrators, faculty, and those who support or depend on the institution s activities. This study identifies those information technologies likely to evolve in the near term (a decade or less) that could ultimately have a major impact on the research university. It also examines the possible implications of these technologies for the research university its activities (learning, research, outreach) and its organization, management, and financing and for the broader higher education enterprise. The authoring committee urges research universities and their constituents to develop new strategies to ensure that they survive and thrive in the digital age.

Summary:
Watching Barbara Walters's interview with Monica Lewinsky was like being caught in a tractor beam of horrified prurience. It boggled the mind that the leader of the free world would risk so much for... well, you know. The interview was many things, including funny, and that was mainly due to the enormous chasm between interviewer and interviewee regarding the heart of the matter: sex. When Walters asked, "And there were things that were done that made you as a woman happy and content?" it took women under 40 a few moments before they realized to what Walters was so coyly referring. The women of Generation (Se)X don't talk to each other like that. Even in public. They are a lot more explicit.
In
Her Way, journalist Paula Kamen traces what she calls a sexual evolution, a slow but profound change in how women relate to their sexualities. Thirtysomething Kamen uses surveys (some more scientific than others), scholarly and popular literature, pop entertainment, and her own open-ended interviews with a wide variety of women to paint a picture of younger women who are more confident about their sexual selves (be they virginal or promiscuous) and in negotiating what they want in bed and their love relationships.
In keeping with the book's sex-positive message, the emphasis is on women's agency and on further possibilities for broadly satisfying sexual and interpersonal relationships. There is little about, for example, sexual violence, including date rape. Kamen has distilled a wealth of research in an engaging and accessible form, and she does not shy away from a more subtle commentary that notes the persistence of a sexual double standard for men and women. She also points out that we are still operating on "basic male definitions of sex or sexual freedoms" and asks whether, perhaps, in the words of the bumper sticker, "Women who strive to be equal to men aren't ambitious enough."

The "alarming and impassioned"* book on how the Internet is redefining constitutional law, now reissued as the first popular book revised online by its readers (*New York Times)
There's a common belief that cyberspace cannot be regulated-that it is, in its very essence, immune from the government's (or anyone else's) control. Code, first published in 2000, argues that this belief is wrong. It is not in the nature of cyberspace to be unregulable; cyberspace has no "nature." It only has code-the software and hardware that make cyberspace what it is. That code can create a place of freedom-as the original architecture of the Net did-or a place of o
