Linux Phrasebook is all about the Linux command line, and it's perfect for both Linux newbies and experienced users. In fact, when I was asked to write the book, I responded, "Write it? I can't wait to buy it!"

The idea behind Linux Phrasebook is to give practical examples of Linux commands and their myriad options, with examples for everything. Too often a Linux user will look up a command in order to discover how it works, and while the command and its many options will be detailed, something vitally important will be left out: examples. That's where Linux Phrasebook comes in. I cover a huge number of different commands and their options, and for every single one, I give an example of usage and results that makes it clear how to use it.

Here's the table of contents; in parentheses I've included some (just some) of the commands I cover in each chapter:

1. Things to Know About Your Command Line
2. The Basics (ls, cd, mkdir, cp, mv, rm)
3. Learning About Commands (man, info, whereis, apropos)
4. Building Blocks (;, &&, |, >, >>)
5. Viewing Files (cat, less, head, tail)
6. Printing and Managing Print Jobs (lpr, lpq, lprm)
7. Ownerships and Permissions (chgrp, chown, chmod)
8. Archiving and Compression (zip, gzip, bzip2, tar)
9. Finding Stuff: Easy (grep, locate)
10. The find command (find)
11. Your Shell (history, alias, set)
12. Monitoring System Resources (ps, lsof, free, df, du)
13. Installing software (rpm, dkpg, apt-get, yum)
14. Connectivity (ping, traceroute, route, ifconfig, iwconfig)
15. Working on the Network (ssh, sftp, scp, rsync, wget)
16. Windows Networking (nmblookup, smbclient, smbmount)

I'm really proud of the whole book, but the chapter on the super-powerful and useful find command is a standout, along with the material on ssh and its descendants sftp and scp. But really, the whole book is great, and I'll definitely be keeping a copy on my desk as a reference. If you want to know more about the Linux command line and how to use it, then I know you'll enjoy and learn from Linux Phrasebook.

ISBN: 1580539394
Author: Fred R. Goldstein
Publisher: Artech House Publishers
Summary:

In today's telecom business environment, a thorough and accurate understanding of past mistakes goes a long way in ensuring future success. Providing an authoritative account of what contributed to the failure of so many telecom firms between 2000 and 2002, this insightful resource explores the roots of the perfect storm that buffeted telecom and Internet companies and investors. You find a detailed insider's look at how the crash was caused by a complex combination of risk and regulatory factors in an increasingly competitive environment, much of it originally fueled by the break up of AT&T.
The Great Telecom Meltdown offers you a solid understanding of the evolving structure of the information, communications and telecom industries, and how companies and sectors within these industries relate to each other. You gain insight into identifying sound long-term investment strategies and avoiding fads with unsound fundamentals. The book helps you make sense of the regulatory framework that has been evolving, as competition gradually replaces regulation among different industry sectors. Moreover, you gain an appreciation for the context of the modern telecom industry, leading up to and beyond the Telecom Act of 1996, which, as the book explains, has been given more credit and more blame for the events of the era than it deserves.

Drawing the Human Head Review:

A worthwhile addition to the reference library

I picked up this book while taking a drawing class on portraiture, and I found it to be an excellent supplement to the material I was learning in class. Hogarth takes the reader through the basics of measuring facial proportions, shadow and light planes, and anatomical details that are important to keep in mind when trying to draw realistically. While some of it may seem like overkill at first, with practice it becomes clear how paying attention to such small details (such as the various areas of light and shadow on a nose, or around the eye socket) can help improve one's ability to create a convincing human head in any medium of artwork.

There are reasons to be critical of the book, however. As my art teacher pointed out, Hogarth's illustrations are extremely high contrast, emphasizing light and shadow for teaching purposes much more so than they should be in a realistic drawing. Some sections are more filler than actual useful information as well, such as the "Gallery of Great Heads"; I could have used more detail on taking the anatomical information of the earlier sections and how to apply it to portraiture and creating a specific likeness.

Overall, though, this is one of the better books I've found on the subject and I do find myself using it as a reference when needed.

One of the financial world's most respected experts on the psychology of risk provides a revolutionary risk management model
Over the past three decades investors have adopted all varieties of complex quantitative systems for quantifying and managing risk. Yet, sophisticated investors and money managers continue to suffer record losses in today's increasingly volatile markets. This book bridges the gap between investor psychology and quantitative risk management with a revolutionary risk management program that virtually any trader or investor can easily adapt to their goals and personalities. Using numerous fascinating real-life case studies, Dr. Kiev illustrates the various psychological and emotional traps to which even the savviest investors can fall victim. He develops a dynamic new risk management model that combines quantitative models and money management techniques. He also provides rigorous guidelines that will help readers answer such crucial questions as: How much should I trade? How much risk can I handle? and When should I get out?

Well I bought this book in 1991, when I was just learning about technical trading. The ideas were mostly unique then, or at least had not been published together yet in one volume, from what I know.

The main ideas in the book have to do with expansion and contraction in volatility and moves off the open (Opening Range
Breakouts).

Toby is a successful hedge fund manager, having worked for Victor Niederhoffer before starting his own company. Toby's
returns are good, but his risk management is far better. Toby's funds have grown primarily due to his excellent risk management
skills as opposed to his returns. In layman's terms this means that he hardly ever loses money but he doesn't make much for his clients. This is actually fairly unique and he should be commended for finding this niche in the business.

I should say that I do know both Toby and Victor, although they are just industry acquaintances, not friends, and I have not seen them in a many years.

For young struggling traders, the ideas in this book are available cheaper in other books or on the internet. They are also known as volatility breakout strategies. I suggest you pay not more than $200 for this book. If you can't buy it for less
than that, look elsewhere.

Review:

One of the best books on VaR, but not suitable for beginners

I fundamentally disagree with the reviewer stating that this book should not be bought. The fact that that reviewer isn't familiar with Matlab is a shame given that he or she works as a risk manager and since Matlab is often a basic pre-requisite for doing good quantitative finance. Serious risk management demands serious numerical software and Matlab is one such tool which allows quick model implementation in the fast paced business world. Excel/VBA are definitely not suitable for good work in this field (just look up the many statistical problems that can be found in Excel's functions, for example, or try to implement some basic matrix operations using VBA). C is not great either given that the Dowd's didactic message would be lost in a sea of imperative coding logic. Not understanding that the 'svd' function is shorthand for singular value decomposition, makes me suspect that that reviewer's quantitative abilities may not at the level needed to read this book. However, I don't want to turn this review into a flame-fest advocating Matlab over all else and ignoring the content of the book itself. I think Matlab has its faults too, but Dowd made a sensible choice in using this pseudocode-like language for the examples of the models he presents. (And if Matlab is too expensive to purchase there are many free clones that work just as well: just search for 'scilab' or 'octave' on the web). But on with the review of the book itself...

The book provides a simple, intuitive introduction to regression models for qualitative and discrete dependent variables, to sample selection models, and to event history models, all in the context of maximum likelihood estimation. It presents a wide range of commonly used models. The book thereby enables the reader to become a critical consumer of current empirical social science research and to conduct own empirical analyses. The book includes numerous examples, illustrations, and exercises. It can be used as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate, a Master`s or a first-year Ph.D. course in microdata analysis, and as a reference for practitioners and researchers.

Summary:
Secret to sales success starts with higher emotional intelligence (E.Q.). Improve your E.Q. and watch your sales soar!

Emotional Intelligence (E.Q.) is the ability to relate to people and maintain positive relationships, and is now widely regarded as more critical to workplace success than I.Q. Selling With Emotional Intelligence will help sales professionals improve their E.Q. for better performance.

Synopsis:

In the contemporary ultra-competitive business environment, it's not enough for sales professionals to be adept at technical and tactical skills such as getting appointments, making presentations and closing deals. To really succeed, they must develop and apply their relational skills - or what is known as emotional intelligence - to help them connect with people, recognize customer wants and needs, and build strong, lasting relationships. The concept of emotional intelligence was first popularized in the late 1990s, and later linked to leadership and management success. Studies show that a person's emotional intelligence has an 80 to 85 per cent influence on success in the workplace, while his or her IQ has at best a 25 per cent influence. Here, author and sales trainer Mitch Anthony presents an examination of emotional intelligence as it relates to sales performance. Anthony first explains what emotional intelligence is, then presents sales professionals with a proven program for increasing their emotional intelligence, thus improving their sales success. The program, which is known as the ARROW Programme, includes five steps: "Awareness" - tune-in to natural strengths and weaknesses; examine how one's personality impacts others; be aware of emotions controlling the sales process. "Restraint" - identify negative emotions that can damage relationships, inflict pain and cost money; prepare a rational response that will restrain emotions. "Resilience" - learn to develop an optimistic, persistent nature; embrace adversity; recognize the true source of discouragement; embrace intrinsic motivators. "Others (empathy)" - discern feelings and motives; develop emotional radar; learn to be a better listener and observer. "Working with others (building rapport)" - communicate; resolve conflicts; learn to relate to and lead others.
