Java not working in Internet Explorer

I am running IE 7 on Vista Home Premium (sp1) Laptop and Java is not working. I've enabled Java in my add on manager, uninstalled Java and reinstalled the newest version of it, but no luck. Internet Explorer is running in protected mode and running it in custom mode is no good. Any help out there?
