As was widely rumored, leaked, and predicted, Microsoft made a series of announcements regarding its Windows Mobile platform at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2009 in Barcelona on Monday. CEO Steve Ballmer proclaimed that smartphones would soon comprise 50 percent of worldwide mobile phones and that Windows would be the platform that would continue to be adopted not only on the PC but on mobile devices as well. As part of the various announcements relating to devices, software, and services, Ballmer unveiled Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft My Phone, and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. To simplify things, the new Windows Mobile phones would start to be marketed as "Windows phones" in the fall, which is when the new devices from Microsoft partners will begin to ship.

"Windows phones bring together the best of the Web, the PC, and the phone so you can connect instantly to the experiences you care about, no matter where you are," Ballmer said. "We're working with partners across the industry to deliver a new generation of Windows phones that break down the barriers between people, information, and applications and provide great end-to-end experiences that span your entire life, at work and at home."

hey all, im using the xp student edition on a few of my machines, but for some odd reason 1 machine wnt validate, it has the message Geographically Blocked PID in the genuine advantage validation tool. any idea why its saying that? the regional settings are set the same as the other machines, (UK) ??

I have been thinking over the last few months that microsoft is missing a huge market of pc buyers. Gamers. i am a gamer and i think about this often. why does microsoft not release a version of windows that does not have all the rubbish / bloat that the current systems have and optimize them for gamers. ok i can understand how this could be hard to do but you cant tell me that the people at microsoft dont play games. i am sure if you look at their workstations that most the standard microsoft crap is not even installed. if microsfot gets upset that we as consumers uninstall parts of windows or use nlite / vlite etc to remove the crap from the install why dont they look at releasing a version with all the stuff removed?? i dont think it would be to hard to achive, post a forum on their website and ask gamers what parts of windows do we not use - i thaught this would be pretty easy. and i would guess that most of use remove the same items.
i also wonder if releasing a version like this that maybe doesnot require activation every time we change hardware / reload windows etc that the amount of pirate versions online would decrease.
also the cost of windows, why not make it cheap, $100 - $200 us. which i am in new zealand and by the time i have to buy it is is stupid. vista ultimate x64 costs around $600nz dollars - and thats 2 years after release.

i look forward to hearing what everyone else has to say about this.

I extracted all the files and I can see an .iso files in each of the 5 parts, strange. When I try to extract the iso file the folder is empty! What am I doing wrong?

sorted it, so for reference anybody having trouble with their firewire soundcard. Try intalling the legacy driver for the firewire card (their are 3 options in device manager update). I know of someone else with a motu fw soundcard found the same solution.

Microsoft has released a "Technology Preview" of its new Microsoft Recite application, which will officially be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona tomorrow (though the site went live early). Recite is an application for Windows Mobile that uses voice search technology to let users record notes for themselves and then later find those notes by speaking back to the application. Here's an example. You could first tell Microsoft Recite: "Emil's birthday is February 23" as well as "Emil wants a 16GB Zune for his birthday." When you later want to figure out what to get me for my birthday and when it is, you can simply say "Emil's birthday" into the search function. Saying "Zune" would also bring up the second message, as well as any other entries that also mention "Zune."

If you've got one of the following phones, you can go download the preview for free (via text, mobile browser, or your computer) and try it out: AT&T BlackJack II, AT&T Pantech Duo, HTC Diamond, Motorola Q9C, Moto Q9m, Palm Treo 800w, Palm Treo Pro, SMT 5800, T-Mobile Dash, T-Mobile Shadow, and T-Mobile Wing. Microsoft keeps reminding us that this $300 million ad campaign is nowhere near done, as it is split into many stages. The third (and current) stage is called "Rookies," and it features cute little kids using Windows Live programs.

Last week, we saw four-year-old Kylie using Windows Live Photo Gallery to make a picture of her pet fish Dorothy "better," then send it off to her mom and dad. A new ad now shows Alexa, who is older and therefore takes more than just one picture, using Windows Live Photo Gallery to stitch the photos together into one big picture of her home-made fort and then print it out. Just as with Kylie, the ad finishes with Alexa saying, "I'm a PC and I'm seven years old." I've embedded the video for your viewing pleasure:
