Visual Basic is the most popular programming language in existence. At the present time, it is estimated that there are over three million programmers using Visual Basic. It is also the most popular introductory programming language at most colleges and universities. This is going to become even more widespread with Visual Basic .NET. From the outset, this book is designed to teach an individual with no prior programming experience the art of object-oriented programming. The reader is carefully led through a thoughtful sequence of chapters that builds a solid foundation of programming knowledge and skills. Whether the reader is seeking general programming knowledge or specific skills in Web or database programming, this book provides the knowledge to gain those expertise.

Obviously, I think you should read this book. Whether you are a seasoned programmer or just beginning to explore computer programming, this book will be helpful to you. Embodied in this text are decades of teaching experience that have helped me to understand the learning process. With ADO.NET, you can build database-enabled applications and Web services with more speed, flexibility, and power than ever before. ADO.NET Programming in Visual Basic .NET teaches you all you'll need to know to make the most of ADO.NET - whether you're an experienced Visual Basic database programmer or not. The authors' realistic code examples and practical insights illuminate ADO.NET from its foundations to state-of-the-art data binding and application optimization.

If this book is titled ADO .NET Programming in Visual Basic .NET, why do I keep referring to Visual Studio? Well, in the past, VB (and its variants, VBScript and VB For Applications) was the most natural environment for ADO database programming. The other Visual Studio tools (Visual C++, Visual Interdev, Visual FoxPro) could all use ADO, but since ADO was designed around the COM (Component Object Model) architecture, VB was the easiest way to use the package. With the advent of Visual Studio .NET, this has all changed.

Many articles have appeared in the press about Visual Basic .NET being radically different from prior versions of Visual Basic. Unfortunately, most of the articles leave you with more questions than answers. What exactly are the changes in Visual Basic .NET? Will it be possible to upgrade existing applications? Why does it break compatibility with Visual Basic 6? Visual Basic .NET includes an Upgrade Wizard, which upgrades up to 95 percent of your project’s code, but what about the other 5 percent? What are the common upgrade issues? How do you resolve them and get your project working in Visual Basic .NET? What about XML Web services and ADO.NET data access—how can existing programs take advantage of these new features?

In this book, we answer these questions and more. We provide a complete guide to upgrading, with both technical and conceptual information. To upgrade your applications, you will need to learn some new skills. We teach these skills and discuss the hows, whats, and whys of upgrading: how to recognize the micro-issues that need a one-line fix, what to do about macro-issues that involve redesign of your application, and why MS made the changes to Visual Basic.

Digital Electronics DemystifiedThe field of teaching digital electronics has not changed significantly in the past 20 years. Many of the same books that first became available in the late 1970s and early 1980s are still being used as basic texts. In the 20+ years since these were written, the basic rules have not changed, but they do not provide strong links to modern electronics including CMOS logic, Programmable Logic Devices and microprocessor/microcontroller interfacing. Courses teaching introductory digital electronics will fill in the missing areas of information for students, but neither the instructors nor students have resources to explain modern technology and interfaces. One assumption made by all the standard texts is that experimenting with digital electronics cannot be done easily - in the proposed book, “digital guru” Myke Predko will show how readers can set up their own apparatus for experimenting with digital electronics for less than $10.

The Secure Online Business E.Commerce It Functionality and Business ContinuityThe effective management of risks online is likely to be the greatest business enabler / destroyer of the next decade. Clearly, organizations that do not move to full e-commerce functionality are unlikely to flourish; whereas those that ignore cyber crime and the "dark side" of the Internet are likely to get badly burnt.

This important new book highlights the key issues in online risk management, taking the premise that information security is no longer an issue confined to the IT department but is critical to all operational functions: finance, HR, marketing, production etc.

Nor are its solutions purely technical. With two thirds of security breaches said to be caused by human error, management controls and processes are equally important.

Published in association with the Institute of Directors in England, "The Secure Online Business" draws on the experience of leading firms and their advisers and uses up-to-date case studies to illustrate "best practice" in online risk management.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition x86 Beta3Windows Server 2008 is the name of the next server operating system from Microsoft. It is the successor to Windows Server 2003. It was known as codename Windows Server "Longhorn" until May 15, 2007, when Bill Gates announced its official title during his keynote address at WinHEC.

Windows Server 2008 is the server operating system containing many of the new client features from Windows Vista. This is a similar relationship to that between Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

It has been confirmed that this version of Windows Server supports x64 (64 bit), as well as x86 (32 bit) processors. IA-64 will be supported in the Datacenter Edition of Windows Server 2008. The IA-64 version will be optimized for high workload scenarios like database server and line of business applications. As such it is not optimized for use as a file server or media server. Microsoft has announced that Windows Server 2008 will be the last 32-bit server operating system that it will produce.

Its Never Done That Before - A Guide to Toubleshooting Windows XP

When Windows works properly, it's relatively easy to ignore; you can concentrate on the work you're trying to do and forget about the plumbing inside your computer. But when something goes wrong, it often requires an experienced guide to solve the problem and restore the computer to working condition. Everybody who uses Microsoft Windows eventually has to deal with cryptic error messages, frozen screens, and other more or less dramatic problems. Windows troubleshooting is the set of tools and techniques that can identify the source of a problem and find a solution.

It's Never Done That Before is a guide to Windows XP troubleshooting for people who don't spend their lives fixing computer problems. It includes basic troubleshooting techniques, specific instructions for solving the most common problems in Windows XP, and more general information for finding and fixing more obscure ones. It also provides pointers to explanations of BIOS beep codes and blue screen errors, instructions for using the troubleshooting tools supplied with Windows XP such as Safe Mode and the Recovery Console, and advice for dealing with device drivers, the ROM BIOS, and the Windows Registry. Viruses, spyware, and Internet connection problems are all included, along with advice for getting the most out of the Microsoft Knowledge base and other online information resources, and dealing with help desks and technical support centers.

Similarity Search - The Metric Space ApproachThe proliferation of information housed in computerized domains makes it vital to find tools to search these resources efficiently and effectively. Ordinary retrieval techniques are inadequate because sorting is simply impossible. Consequently, proximity searching has become a fundamental computation task in a variety of application areas.

Similarity Search focuses on the state of the art in developing index structures for searching the metric space. Part I of the text describes major theoretical principles, and provides an extensive survey of specific techniques for a large range of applications. Part II concentrates on approaches particularly designed for searching in large collections of data. After describing the most popular centralized disk-based metric indexes, approximation techniques are presented as a way to significantly speed up search time at the cost of some imprecision in query results. Finally, the scalable and distributed metric structures are discussed.

The Definitive Guide to GrailsReviewed and endorsed by Guillaume Laforge and Dierk Koenig of Groovy, The Definitive Guide to Grails, by Grails lead Graeme Rocher, is for anyone looking for a more agile approach to web development with a dynamic scripting language such as Groovy. It will show you the new direction web frameworks are taking and specifically how a dynamic scripting language like Groovy can be harnessed on the JavaTM platform for productive Grails development.

This book takes you through the Grails development life cycle, including its project infrastructure, screen generation, full automatic object mapping to relational database systems, and a flexible, easy-to-use web layer. This book also demonstrates how Grails complements Java web development. Topics include creating domain classes in the Java platform while still accessing advanced features like dynamic persistent methods, using Grails controllers to call business logic written in the Java specification, and testing your Java application logic using Grails test cases.

The author tackles new issues like writing web applications with dynamic languages, an agile approach, Ajax, and more.
The Java platform has always been about choice, and this book demonstrates how you can use select aspects of Grails that you choose.
The book makes up for the current lack of solid Groovy documentation.

All software is based on the principle of manipulating data. Whether it's the code that runs inside your VCR to start recording at a specific time, or air traffic control software, code is always working with data in one form or another.

Today, we find that sophisticated applications store their data in a "database", a central repository of data overseen by a Database Management System, or DBMS. A DBMS does two things. Firstly, it handles the storage of the data. Secondly, it provides mechanisms for retrieving data as well as adding, removing, and changing data. A DBMS endeavors to do this in the most efficient way possible.

Over the years, the DBMS market has grown into a mature sophisticated industry in its own right, offering products designed for use in large enterprise environments like Oracle 9i or MS SQL Server 2000, down to products designed for use on the desktop like MS Access. In some cases, you even find that software packages include their own DBMS software for managing their own proprietary databases.

This book provides a hands-on approach to learning Visual Basic.NET, one of the most popular and easy-to-learn language provided by the .NET framework. The book is aimed at readers with programming knowledge of earlier versions of Visual Basic. These readers are assumed to be experienced application developers who have knowledge of developing applications using any of the earlier versions of Visual Basic.

The book starts with a few overview chapters that cover the key concepts of Visual Basic.NET. These chapters act as an information store for readers and provide a concrete idea about the concepts. After that follows a chapter on how to migrate existing Visual Basic applications to the .NET platform. A major part of the book revolves around professional projects that are based on real-life situations. They follow a simple-tocomplex approach to cover specific subject areas and to guide the readers in implementing their learning in practical scenarios. The projects range from a simple project to create a Windows application using ADO.NET as the data access model to a complex project to create a Web application using a Web service. In addition, there are projects that will introduce how to create a Word-to-XML converter application and how to create a mobile Web application. These projects help readers accomplish their goals by understanding the practical and real-life application of Visual Basic.NET.

The MS .NET Framework represents an exciting new world for developers who work with MS Access, Visual Basic, and Visual Basic for Applications. This book provides complete, practical details on how to take advantage of this world by building or upgrading Access-based client applications with Visual Basic .NET. It gives you specific instructions about how the .NET Framework pertains to Access development. Then it explores programming with Visual Basic .NET and ADO.NET, and puts it all together with examples and code samples that show how to develop robust Web applications and services with these tools.

This book targets developers and computer fans who use Access databases and want to get a firm grasp of the MS .NET Framework. These two defining elements (Access and the .NET Framework) define the book’s scope and its treatment of topics. While other types of databases can be used to create solutions with .NET, this book deals almost exclusively with Access databases. The book demonstrates Visual Basic .NET programming techniques instead of addressing a broad range of languages compatible with the .NET Framework because developers creating solutions with Access and MS Office are likely to have experience programming with VBA. Beyond that, many classic Visual Basic developers have substantial experience with Access databases even if they currently work primarily with another database type, such as SQL Server.

Visual Basic.NET Database Programming walks the readers step-by-step through the topics they need to know to use databases effectively. This book teaches with real-world scenarios how to load, display, manipulate, modify and save data in databases. It shows the reader how to build multi-tier applications that implement enterprise-wide business solutions, build Web Servers, manage large amounts of data, find specific records, sort data, perform complex queries, and use XML–an integral part of data handling in Visual Basic.NET.

Visual Basic .NET Database Programming explains how you can use databases in your Visual Basic.NET applications. It talks briefly about several different ways a program can manage data but focuses heavily on the most common type of database in use today: a relational database. Using a relational database and Visual Basic .NET, you can build programs that store, modify, find, and display data quickly and easily.

VB.NET Core Classes in a Nutshell, provides a concise and thorough reference to the types found in the core namespaces of the .NET Framework Class Library. A companion to VB.NET Language in a Nutshell, this is a reference that VB.NET programmers will turn to repeatedly. Due to a special partnership between O'Reilly and Microsoft, this book also includes a CD that integrates the book's reference into Visual Studio .NET.

As a reference guide to the core classes, we think you'll find Visual Basic .NET Core Classes in a Nutshell to be an essential book regardless of your level of experience with Visual Basic. Whether you are an experienced Visual Basic developer or a relatively new programmer just beginning to work with Visual Basic and the .NET platform, you'll find that Visual Basic .NET Core Classes in a Nutshell provides an extremely helpful description of each type in the namespaces documented in Part II, along with a useful list of type members that features VB syntax.

Like so many children, as a youth I was mystified by this wonderful and exasperating thing called memory. In casual and relaxed situations it worked so smoothly that I hardly ever noticed it; in examinations it only occasionally performed well, to my surprise, but was more often associated with 'bad memory', the fearful area of forgetting. Since I spent much of my childhood in the country with animals, I began to realise that the misnamed 'dumb' creatures seemed to have extraordinary memories, often superior to my own. Why, then, was human memory apparently so faulty?

I began to study in earnest, eagerly devouring information about how the early Greeks had devised specific memory systems for various tasks; and how, later, the Romans applied these techniques to enable themselves to remember whole books of mythology and to impress their audiences during senatorial speeches and debates. My interest became more focused while I was in college, when the realisation slowly dawned on me that such basic systems need not be used only for 'rote' or parrotlike memory, but could be used as gigantic filing systems for the mind, enabling extraordinarily fast and efficient access, and enormously enhancing general understanding. I applied the techniques in taking examinations, in playing games with my imagination in order to improve my memory, and in helping other students, who were supposedly on the road to academic failure, achieve first-class successes.

The registry is the heart and soul of MS Windows XP. In my other registry books, I said the same thing about the registry in every version of Windows since MS Windows 95, and by the time you're finished reading this book, I hope you'll agree. The registry contains the configuration data that makes the operating system work. The registry enables developers to organize configuration data in ways that are impossible with other mechanisms, such as INI files. It's behind just about every feature in Windows XP that you think is cool. More importantly, it enables you to customize Windows XP in ways you can't through the user interface.

Windows XP and every application that runs on MS's latest desktop operating system do absolutely nothing without consulting the registry first. When you double-click a file, Windows XP consults the registry to figure out what to do with it. When you install a device, Windows XP assigns resources to the device based on information in the registry and then stores the device's configuration in the registry. When you run an application such as MS Word 2002, the application looks up your preferences in the registry. If you were to monitor the registry during a normal session, you'd see the registry serves up thousands of values within minutes.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money shows that any numbskull can master personal finance. In this second edition, a father-and-daughter writing team, Robert K. Heady and Christy Heady, give readers the best advice culled from their many years of experience in consumer rights and money management. The Headys believe that money must be managed for the long haul and that there are no quick ways to build wealth. The guide is easy to read, witty, and scornful of the hype dished out by banks and other peddlers of personal finance. It provides a plethora of personal-finance tips for consumers, including how to get the best deal on a mortgage, pay off debt, and bank online. The authors expose financial pitfalls such as bank-sold mutual funds, dealer financing for motor vehicles, extended warranties, and those dreaded bank fees. A full chapter is devoted to the evils of credit cards, which they feel is the biggest ripoff in the financial world. The writers contend that the toughest thing about saving is making the decision to do it. You should get going by putting aside a little amount of money each month through a mutual fund or dividend reinvestment plan. "The whole idea of managing money is to save a dollar here and there and then take that dollar and build it into two," they write. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to understand that.

Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made Easy

As a web user, you'll no doubt have noticed some of the breathtaking applications available in today's modern web, such as Google Maps and Flickrdesktop applications than the old style web sites you are used to. You've probably also wished that you could create such things, and then thought "nahhh, I'd need to know a lot of complicated code to be able to even start creating sites like these." Well, think again. There is a lot of complicated code involved in cutting edge "Ajax style" web applications, but a lot of the hard work is already done for you, and available on the Web. JavaScript libraries exist to provide most of that Ajax/DOM Scripting functionality out of the box. Application programming interfaces (APIs) exist to allow you to transplant complicated applications such as Google Maps and Flickr right into your own web sites. And hosting services such as Flickr and YouTube provide all you need to store and retrieve your media (be it images, video, or whatever) at your leisure, without having to worry about bandwidth issues and file naming nightmares. All you need to know is enough to successfully wire together all this functionality successfully and responsibly, and this book shows you how. It starts from the very beginning of your journey, showing you what's available, what you need, and how to set up an effective development environment. After a solid base has been built, it shows you how to build up each aspect of your site, including storing, retrieving, and displaying content, adding images and video to your site, building effective site navigation and laying it all out beautifully using CSS, promoting your content so you will attract visitors to your site, and adding special effects to enhance usability and design asthetics…all with ready-made functionality available on the Web! Life as a web developer has never been easier.

It is very popular among designers and developers alike, and has an active community of users. Sound good? Well, you're in luckthe book you're holding now shows you how to use every aspect of Textpattern to a professional standard. Textpattern (and this book) appeals to two main groups of people: Firstly, the web designer who has mastered the fundamentals of XHTML and CSS and wants to create sites that have fresh and dynamically changing information, but is not familiar with server-side coding and databases. Never fearTextpattern enables you to integrate your XHTML knowledge, inserting dynamic aspects into your already solid site design. Secondly, PHP developers who are looking for a content management system upon which to build additional functionality and want a hand with the design aspects of their site. Again, Textpattern fills in those holes. The book leaves no stone unturned. It starts by introducing you to Textpattern and guiding you through its very simple installation process. After the core features of the administrative interface are explored, the book dives into building sites with TXP, using CSS, articles, forms, pages, and more to create fully customized templates. Development follows next, looking at installing plugins and building your own custom plugins to further enhance your Textpattern-based site. The book concludes with several case studies to provide ideas and inspiration, including a weblog, an e-commerce site, and an online review directory.

Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0

Microformats burst onto the scene a couple of years ago and are fast becoming an essential tool for all professional web designers and developers. Imagine being able to integrate all of your web-based contact details, tagged articles, and geographical information seamlessly in web and desktop applications, without having to add anything extra to your websites except a little specialized HTML markup. Microformats provide a more formalized technology for adding commonly used semantics (such as contact details, location, and reviews) to today's Web. Unlike XML or the semantic Web, microformats use ubiquitous technologies like HTML and XHTML, existing developer skills, and current web tools, and, perhaps most important, they work in all of today's web browsers. This book is a comprehensive guide to microformats. It explores why, in Bill Gates's words, "We need microformats"; how microformats work; and the kinds of problems microformats help solve. the book covers every current microformat, with complete details of the syntax, semantics, and uses of each, along with real-world examples and a comprehensive survey of the tools available for working with them. the book also features case studies detailing how major web content publishers such as yahoo put microformats to work in their web applications. Written by one of the Web's best-known educators, John Allsopp, Microformats: Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0 will help you painlessly get up to speed with this exciting technology.

Network programming is one of the core tasks of enterprise-level development-the need for disparate computers to communicate efficiently and securely, whether within the same building, or across the world, remains fundamental to the success of many systems. With the .NET Framework comes a new set of classes for tackling networking tasks.

After reading this book, you will be a confident .NET network programmer, and understand the underlying protocols. The current set of protocols supported by .NET classes is limited to the transport-level protocols TCP and UDP, and the application-level protocols HTTP and SMTP. In this book, we provide not only full coverage of these classes, but also examples of implementing application-level protocols in .NET-thus this book will be vital reading for anyone who needs to use a protocol that isn't currently supported by .NET, as well as for anyone who wants to get-to-grips with the predefined protocols.

This is a coder's book. It's intended to help developers build applications that make use of T-SQL. It's not about database administration or design. It's not about end-user or GUI application development. It's not even about server or database performance tuning. It's about developing the best T-SQL code possible, regardless of the application.
You'll have to judge for yourself whether these goals have been met, but my hope is that, regardless of the degree of success, the effort will at least be evident.

This book uses SQL Server's Northwind and pubs sample databases extensively. You'll nearly always be able to determine which database a particular example uses from the surrounding commentary or from the code itself. The pubs database is used more often than Northwind, so, when it's not otherwise specified or when in doubt, use pubs.

This book was written for Visual Basic programmers by a Visual Basic programmer. In my description of how to work with Visual Basic .NET, I first build a foundation, providing background about the changes in computing and software development that make knowing about the MS .NET Framework of vital interest to programmers as well as a practical necessity. I cover the essentials of object-oriented programming in Visual Basic .NET and explain how to build your own classes and work with the .NET Framework classes, how to work with arrays and collections, and how to debug and handle errors in your programs. From our foundation, we climb to the next level. I cover the details of how to work with .NET assemblies, how to work with files and data streams, and how to monitor files over a network, including how to build a Windows service application that runs on a server.

In three full chapters I cover how programming for data access has changed with Visual Basic .NET and ADO.NET. Then we move to the world of Web services—programs and components designed to run on the Internet. In the last chapter, I bring together what's been covered throughout the earlier chapters. Along the way, you'll see plenty of useful and interesting sample code.

Exploits. In most information technology circles these days, the term exploits has become synonymous with vulnerabilities or in some cases, buffer overflows. It is not only a scary word that can keep you up at night wondering if you purchased the best firewalls, configured your new host-based intrusion prevention system correctly, and have patched your entire environment, but can enter the security water-cooler discussions faster than McAfee’s new wicked anti-virus software or Symantec’s latest acquisition.

Exploits are proof that the computer science,or software programming, community still does not have an understanding (or,more importantly, firm knowledge) of how to design, create, and implement secure code.

My previous book, You Can Do It!, was written for the complete newcomer to programming. I made no assumptions about the reader’s prior knowledge and skills other than that they were capable of using a M$ Windows–based machine at the general level of accessing the Internet. It should not matter to such people what language is used for their practical experience of programming. I chose C++ because I felt certain that it was well up to the task, as long as I used a carefully chosen subset and augmented the Standard Library with a library of my own design that would support writing programs that newcomers would find interesting. The priority of that book was learning sound programming.

Why do we care about database security?

If money could be said to exist anywhere in a network, it exists on a database server. When we say that modern economies are reliant on computers, what we really mean is that modern economies are reliant on database systems. Databases are behind the systems that affect almost every aspect of our lives — our bank accounts, medical records, pensions, employment records, phone records, tax records, car registration details, supermarket purchases, our children's school grades — almost every piece of information of significance in our lives is stored in a modern relational database management system. Since this volume covers seven of the most popular relational database systems, chances are that your personal information is currently being stored in the very systems that are the subject of this book.

Ageless Marketing Strategies for Reaching the Hearts and Minds of the New Customer MajorityToday's richest market is the New Customer Majority: middle-aged and older adults who make up the biggest percentage of the buying public. Never before have adults 40 years and older been in the majority. Understanding this population and persuasively selling to it require a new kind of marketing research arsenal.

In Ageless Marketing, authors David Wolfe and Robert Snyder document the results of a groundbreaking research project on the aging boomer generation, detailing the core values, buying behaviors, and emotional factors that distinguish the New Customer Majority. As more companies seek sales from multiple age groups, ""ageless marketing"" becomes critical to financial performance. Companies that master its subtleties have realized amazing profits. New Balance, for example, saw an annual rate of 25 percent or more with its ageless marketing themes, even when the athletic shoe industry had shown no growth since 1997.

To bring you up to speed with Visual Basic 2005, this practical book offers nearly 50 hands-on projects. Each one explores a new feature of the language, with emphasis on changes that can increase productivity, simplify programming tasks, and help you add new functionality to your applications. You get the goods straight from the masters in an informal, code-intensive style. Part of our new Developer's Notebook series.

When MS introduced the Visual Basic .NET programming language, as part of its move to the .NET Framework two years ago, many developers willingly made the switch. Millions of others, however, continued to stick with Visual Basic 6. They weren't ready for such a radical change, which included an object-oriented environment similar to Java. They liked the old Visual Basic just fine. In an effort to win over those diehard VB6 developers, the company has included a new version of VB.NET in its upcoming next generation release of the Visual Studio .NET development platform. Visual Basic 2005 comes with innovative language constructs, new compiler features, dramatically enhanced productivity and an improved debugging experience. The language's new version is now available in beta release, and MS is encouraging developers to give it a test drive. Visual Basic 2005: A Developer's Notebook provides the ideal test track.

But while ClickOnce delivers web-style deployment of your application, that's only part of the story. Once you've installed an application using ClickOnce, it can automatically check for new updates to the application, which saves time in application maintenance and upgrades. And on the security front, a ClickOnce application runs within a secure sandbox and you configure it using the Code Access Security model.

This book provides a complete application- and example-oriented introduction to the database system MySQL. No previous knowledge of SQL or database design is assumed.

MySQL is on the verge of repeating in the database market the success achieved by Linux in the operating system sector. In combination with PHP or Perl, MySQL is increasingly used as the database system for web sites. (A favorite combination is Linux + Apache + MySQL + Perl or PHP. Such systems are called “LAMP systems” for short.) MySQL is not just for small web sites; it is used by large firms with huge amounts of data, such as Yahoo!, Slashdot, and NASA.

Since its creation, Visual Basic (VB) has steadily grown into the world’s most popular programming language. But popularity doesn’t always mean respect, and for years the development community has been split between those who think Visual Basic is a revolutionary way to solve just about any programming problem and those who think VB should be sent to the bargain bin to make room for a return to “serious” C++ or Java coding. As a result, Visual Basic programmers have a reputation for being a slightly paranoid bunch.

Recently, Visual Basic has been through the greatest change of its life. It’s morphed into a modern, object-oriented language that’s built on MS’s .NET Framework—the same plumbing that powers such heavyweights as C#. Although most VB developers believe that the .NET Framework will eventually replace old-style Visual Basic 6, a surprising number haven’t made the jump yet. Some don’t trust the new technology (and the never-ending name changes). Others are too busy with real work to think about making a move. And a few are scared off by the radical new model and inevitable migration headaches.

One obvious choice is SQL Server Books Online. With its massive amounts of useful information, you know that the answer has to be there somewhere. Unfortunately, finding this information may involve several click-throughs and red herrings. Once you doarrive at the correct page, the information you need may be integrated into alarger syntax block, with unrelated functionality or examples.

SQL Server 2005 T-SQL Recipeswas written in order to address the need for fast information retrieval and use. Topics are presented in atask-based format. The purpose of this book is to help you build relational databases and get valuable information out of them by using SQL. SQL is the international standard language used around the world to create and maintain relational databases. This edition covers the latest version of the standard, SQL:2003, as augmented in 2005 with a thorough treatment of the use of XML with SQL.

This book doesn’t tell you how to design a database (I do that in Database Development For Dummies, also published by Wiley Publishing, Inc.). Here I assume that you or somebody else has already created a valid design. I then illustrate how you implement that design by using SQL. If you suspect that you don’t have a good database design, by all means, fix your design before you try to build the database. The earlier you detect and correct problems in a development project, the cheaper the corrections will be.

book coverAfter completing this self-contained course on server-based Internet applications software, students who start with only the knowledge of how to write and debug a computer program will have learned how to build web-based applications on the scale of Amazon.com. Unlike the desktop applications that most students have already learned to build, server-based applications have multiple simultaneous users. This fact, coupled with the unreliability of networks, gives rise to the problems of concurrency and transactions, which students learn to manage by using the relational database system.

After working their way to the end of the book, students will have the skills to take vague and ambitious specifications and turn them into a system design that can be built and launched in a few months. They will be able to test prototypes with end-users and refine the application design. They will understand how to meet the challenge of extreme business requirements with automatic code generation and the use of open-source toolkits where appropriate. Students will understand HTTP, HTML, SQL, mobile browsers, VoiceXML, data modeling, page flow and interaction design, server-side scripting, and usability analysis.

2005 brings us an enhanced Visual Basic language (renamed this time Visual Basic 2005). New features have been added that cement this language’s position as  a true object-oriented language. With Visual Basic 2005, it is still going to be a challenge for the traditional VB6 developers to learn, but it is an easy road and books like this are here to help you on your path.

In this book, we cover Visual Basic virtually from start to finish. We begin by looking at the .NET Framework and end by looking at the best practices for deploying .NET applications. In between, we look at everything from database access to integration with other technologies such as XML, along with investigating the new features in detail. You will see that Visual Basic 2005 has emerged as a powerful yet easy-to-use language that will allow you to target the Internet just as easily as the desktop.

This book is acomprehensive, hands-on guide to the Visual Basic .NET programming language addressed to readers with some programming background. No background in Visual Basic is required, however.

While I show you the syntax of VB .NET, this book is not designed to teach you syntax. I have taken this approach because trying to force VB .NET into the framework of older versions of VB is ultimately self-defeating—you cannot take advantage of its power if you continue to think within an older paradigm.

First off, I have tried to give you a complete treatment of object-oriented programming in the context of the VB .NET language. I feel pretty strongly that without a firm foundation here, it is impossible to take full advantage of the power that VB .NET can bring to you.

No Limit Hold em - Theory and Practice Reading No Limit Hold'em Theory and Practice requires considerably more effort than most other poker books, and it feels disjointed in places, but I would not say that it is poorly written. It just doesn't provide the amount of background material tying everything together that one finds in poker books aimed at a less sophisticated audience. This book discusses many different types of no limit situations, but more of them are applicable to cash games than tournament games. There is, though, enough information here to benefit players of both types of games. The book is difficult to read, but the information it contains is excellent, and I strongly recommend it to intermediate and advanced no limit hold'em players of all sorts.

Objects - Components and Frameworks with UMLAfter a quick introduction to the design process Catalysis, this book moves on to carefully defining objects, their attributes, operations, and collaborations. (Generally, Catalysis objects and components are "decoupled" so that they can work more independently, leading to easier reuse and customization.)

The authors then turn to modeling and design, using a spreadsheet program as their example. Next, the authors discuss component-based design, where projects are assembled with components. The book closes with an effective tour of the actual Catalysis design process, illustrated with a case study for a video-rental store. All design documents, written in the Unified Modeling Language (UML), are provided along with some useful expert advice on creating better design documents and components.

Judging from the evidence here, the Catalysis design method can offer some real advantages for today's software, which often must evolve to meet unforeseen requirements (international markets or new platforms such as the Web). Designed according to the principles outlined in the book, components and designs can offer a higher level of reuse. Even if you do not actually adopt the Catalysis process, this authoritative and admirably clear book offers a wealth of design expertise for anyone interested in being more productive with objects and UML

Tag clouds are everywhere on the web these days. First popularized by the web sites Flickr, Technorati, and del.icio.us, these amorphous clumps of words now appear on a slew of web sites as visual evidence of their membership in the elite corps of "Web 2.0." This PDF analyzes what is and isn't a tag cloud, offers design tips for using them effectively, and then goes on to show how to collect tags and display them in the tag cloud format. Scripts are provided in Perl and PHP.

Yes, some have said tag clouds are a fad. But as you will see, tag clouds, when used properly, have real merits. More importantly, the skills you learn in making your own tag clouds enable you to make other interesting kinds of interfaces that will outlast the mercurial fads of this year or the next.

This has not always been true. Throughout most of history, life generally was impacted by dominant qualities in one’s communityora region reachable within one day. Important events that impacted the lives of those living thousands of miles away generally were unknown and had little impact outside that immediate area. Now, however, knowledge of events that occur throughout the world can be received in real time and can impact others’ lives greatly.

MS Visual Basic has the largest user base of any development language in the world, and the ranks are growing. Estimates put the number of users of Visual Basic at about 3 million. Once considered a hobbyist's language, Visual Basic has quickly gained the respect of serious developers and is now widely used in corporate and other commercial environments. Visual Basic .NET further raises the bar, as it now shares the common language runtime used by Visual C# .NET and other MS .NET languages.

It also shares the same IDE, debugging tools, and much more. In the past, there were many arguments about the utility of Visual Basic in building enterprise solutions. Much of this debate pitted the RAD attributes of Visual Basic against the power attributes of C++. Visual Basic was capable of doing amazing things, but often you had to resort to API calls and third-party components to get "under the hood" of MS Windows. Now, the playing field is truly level. Visual Basic .NET's generous flexibility, combined with its focus on maintaining backward compatibility, has always made it an extremely powerful language. Unfortunately, these attributes also seem to encourage sloppy programming, and that simply won't do in today's fast-paced development environments.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a method of remotely storing and receiving data using devices called RFID tags. RFID tags can be small adhesive stickers containing antennas that allow them to receive and respond to transmissions from RFID transmitters. RFID tags are used to identify and track everything from Exxon EZ passes to dogs to beer kegs to library books. RFID tags use a standard that has already been hacked by several researchers.

If you’re reading this, you are likely ready to work with the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and are seeking some direction.

This book provides information about XMLand the issues involved in designing XML-based solutions for business problems. It does so in a case-study format, with each chapter taking one part of the single main project, and leading you through the design of a solution for that, so that by the end of the book, you will understand every aspect of using XMLto design business solutions.

After a broad-stroke introduction to XMLtechnologies, the book surveys solutions to typical business and technology needs that are best solved using XML. You’ll tackle XMLmarkup—more specifically, the kind of markup that you find “under the hood” of everyday applications and web services. Commonly available resources are used to show you the fundamentals of what XMLmarkup is, how to get at valuable information through these resources, and how to begin providing valuable information to others through XML.

Software is built on abstractions. Pick the right ones, and programming will flow naturally from design; modules will have small and simple interfaces; and new functionality will more likely fit in without extensive reorganization. Pick the wrong ones, and programming will be a series of nasty surprises: interfaces will become baroque and clumsy as they are forced to accommodate unanticipated interactions, and even the simplest of changes will be hard to make. No amount of refactoring, bar starting again from scratch, can rescue a system built on flawed concepts.

Quick Hits 10 Key Surgical Strike Actions To Improve Business Process PerformanceImproving business processes, whatever or wherever they are in the enterprise, is an acknowledged way of improving the bottom line. Whether it's re-engineering, Six Sigma, TQM, or any number of other techniques, the problem is that it's usually such a huge undertaking that it's more work than it's worth. Kelvin F. Cross proposes that results can be achieved much more easily by going in and performing "surgical strikes" on specific areas that need improvement, without turning the entire thing into a "science project." And now his method is available for anyone seeking to streamline process structures. Using case studies from companies including AT&T, GE, and Weight Watchers International to illustrate the remarkable results that can be achieved, Quick Hits sums up the ten key areas that are perfect targets for surgical strikes, demonstrating exactly how to handle each type of problem. By showing how to determine which approach to use for any given situation, the book gives readers an arsenal of tactical and judicious methods designed to be low risk, low cost, and very effective.

This book is for developers with a desire to learn about this new and exciting technology and how it can be a benefit in their environment. While a previous knowledge of SQLServer 2000, T-SQL, and previous versions of SQLXMLwill come in handy, it is certainly not a perquisite to reading this book. Adecent understanding about XMLand related technologies (such as XQuery) will also be useful when reading this book, but it isn’t necessary.

MS is serious about XMLand it could not be more evident than with the release of SQLServer 2005, supporting a full-blown new xml data type. This new data type can be used as a column or in variables and stored procedures. It also supports technologies such as XQuery and XMLData Manipulation Language, which provides full query and data modification capabilities on the xml data type.

Micro$oft has always provided world-class development tools for developers. From the release of Visual Basic 1 to Visual Studio 2005, Micro$oft has provided groundbreaking tools to make developers’ lives easier. With the release of Visual Studio 2005, we’ve done a considerable amount of work to help the individual developer be even more productive—refactoring, the My Namespace, edit-and-continue, and improvements in the .NET Framework are just a few examples.

But with Visual Studio 2005, we’ve expanded our focus beyond the developer to the entire development process itself. Visual Studio Team System takes a larger view of the developer’s world. It acknowledges the project management aspects of development, the architecture, and the testing phase of the development life cycle; in other words, Visual Studio Team System takes into account the entire software development life cycle. This shift away from purely an individual’s perspective is designed to ease the burden on development organizations by helping every member of the team gain more insight, and oversight, of the software development life cycle.

The Complete Idiot ’s Guide to Grammar & Style 2nd EditionThe jokey, conversational style of the Complete Idiot's Guide series is better suited to some of its many subjects than to others, but for the Guide to Grammar and Style, it works. This book might not be appropriate for professional proofreaders in search of the definitive use of the en dash, but it is a solid, amusing volume for those who daydreamed through grade school and would like to brush up on the fundamentals. Puns, silly humor, and hyperbole abound, but so do the entertaining quotations from beloved masters of the English language that author Laurie E. Rozakis has managed to dig up. For every "The rules of standard written English are … more frightening than a sail on the Titanic," there is an amusing tidbit such as this one, courtesy of Calvin Trillin: "Whom is a word invented to make everyone sound like a butler. Nobody who is not a butler has ever said it out loud without feeling just a little bit weird." For every "Like my thighs, the distinction between that and which is becoming less firm," we have someone such as James Thurber to show us how to break a rule in style. "When I split an infinitive," Thurber is said to have admonished a meddlesome editor, "it is going to damn well stay split!" The text is highly energetic, and Rozakis cuts to the chase. For instance, she summarizes one chapter this way: "Don't be a sexist pig; ditch doublespeak; end euphemisms; can clichés." And she offers us these wise words, from Thomas Jefferson: "The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do."

Dimensional applications are best and most easily built using a dimensional language. These dimensional applications are typified by the related notions of OLAPand dimensional data warehouses and marts. MDX (for MultiDimensional eXpressions) is the most widely accepted software language used for these applications. The book you read here, MDX Solutions, is the second edition of a guide to learning and using MDX. Since the first edition of MDX Solutions, the number of analytical applications that use MDX has grown very large, and several more servers and many third-party and homegrown client tools now allow you to use MDX to express the logic you use to calculate and to retrieve your information.

As a language, MDX is rather different in style and feel from SQL, and quite different from other programming languages like C++, C#, Lisp, Fortran, and so on. You can think of the formula language of a spreadsheet like Excel as another programming language, and while it is different than Excel, characterizing MDX as a sort of Excel-like SQL or a SQL-like Excel seems more apt than any other analogy. (If you’re familiar with other OLAP query or calculation languages, it has more in common with them, but many readers will not be.)

Hacking and Defending Oracle

While Oracle continues to improve the security features of its product, it still has a long way to go. David Litchfield has devoted years to relentlessly searching out the flaws in this ubiquitous database system and creating defenses against them. Now he offers you his complete arsenal to assess and defend your own Oracle systems.

Like The Shellcoder's Handbook and The Database Hacker's Handbook, this in-depth guide explores every technique and tool used by black hat hackers to invade and compromise Oracle. It shows you how to find the weak spots and defend them. Without that knowledge, you have little chance of keeping your databases truly secure.

  • Discover how to deal with the security flaws revealed in the Oracle RDBMS
  • Explore some never-before-published forays into Oracle security holes and learn to defend them from attack

Linux Bible 2006 Edition is here to open your eyes to what Linux is, where it came from, and where it’s going. But, most of all, the book is here to hand you Linux and help you get started. Because Linux is the operating system of free speech and free choice, Linux Bible gives you choices in selecting the Linux that is right for you.

Unlike other books on Linux, this book doesn’t tie you to one Linux distribution. The book teaches you the essentials of Linux graphical interfaces, shell commands, and basic system administration. Separate chapters break down most of the major Linux distributions available today. Then descriptions of the major software projects in most Linux distributions (KDE and GNOME desktops, Apache Web servers, Samba file and printer sharing, and so on) guide you in setting up and using those features, regardless of which Linux you choose.

To calm your fears that “free” software can’t be that good, this book guides you through the strange and circuitous path of open source software development that led to the Linux phenomenon. It also details the major companies and organizations that are behind Linux and the open source movement today.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the standard modeling language for software and systems development. This statement alone is a pretty conclusive argument for making UML part of your software repertoire, however it leaves some questions unanswered. Why is UML unified? What can be modeled? How is UML a language? And, probably most importantly, why should you care?

Systems design on any reasonably large scale is difficult. Anything from a simple desktop application to a full multi-tier enterprise scale system can be made up of hundredsand potentially thousandsof software and hardware components. How do you (and your team) keep track of which components are needed, what their jobs are, and how they meet your customers' requirements? Furthermore, how do you share your design with your colleagues to ensure the pieces work together? There are just too many details that can be misinterpreted or forgotten when developing a complex system without some help. This is where modelingand of course UMLcomes in.

MS SQL Server 2005 Notification ServicesMS SQL Server 2005 Notification Services covers the basic problems of notification applications, describes the SQL Notification Services platform and describes how to use it to build rich, scalable notification applications. Written by Shyam Pather, the Technical Lead for the SQL Notification Services Team, this book is based on his three years of experience teaching SQL Notification Services to new customers. This book is your complete resource for learning SQL Notification Services application development and the underlying architectural concepts.

Notification Services offers a simple, declarative programming model that lets you build your application with much less development effort than would be required if you were building it from scratch. Using this programming model, you can get a working prototype of a typical application running in just a single day. Furthermore, the platform offers a number of sophisticated features, such as support for multiple languages and device types, scheduled subscriptions, user-defined matching logic, and multicast delivery, that you can incorporate into your applications by setting a few options. These kinds of beyond-the-obvious features set the most advanced notification applications apart from the rest.

Ubuntu is a complete, free operating system that emphasizes community, support, and ease of use while refusing to compromise on speed, power, and flexibility. It's Linux for human beings–designed for everyone from computer novices to experts. Ubuntu is the most in-demand Linux distribution, and this official guide will get you up and running quickly.

Learn how to seamlessly install and customize Ubuntu for your home or small businesses. Its open source power can be used in schools, government, or by corporations, and is suitable for both desktop and server use. The Ubuntu community is built on the premise that software should be available free of charge, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

Ubuntu is by its very nature a community-driven, collaborative platform, and the development of this book has been inspired and driven by this process. This is why the book is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license and why some chapters (Chapters 3, 4, and 7) are actually included with Dapper itself. With this in mind, we hope the content in the book continues to grow and evolve in new areas and bring more and more users over to Ubuntu. It is an exciting time to be a part of Open Source and an exciting time to be a part of Ubuntu.

"Learn How to Program Using Your Web Browser" is intended for readers of any age who want to learn how to program. It assumes no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, and there are no requirements for software purchase or installation beyond what is available on any contemporary computer. The software used for teaching programming will be JavaScript, which can be written using any text editor, and displayed in almost any Web browser, regardless of operating system. Despite the unfortunate word "script" in the language name, in actuality JavaScript is a modern programming language. Learn How to Program will teach the basics of programming using JavaScript. While displaying the results of running JavaScript programs in Web pages will be used to motivate readers - a simple example is changing text when the user moves the mouse over it in a Web page - very emphatically this is not a book about programming JavaScript. It is a book about general principles of good programming practice for complete novices. The target reader is likely a twelve or thirteen year old, who is just starting to get curious about what makes a computer work - or an office worker who has been using computer applications for years, and would like to spend some time delving deeper into what makes them tick.

As you read the book, you will notice that the authors took the approach of identifying some of the risks, threats, and vulnerabilities and then discussing the countermeasures to address them. Some of the topics and thoughts discussed here are as new as tomorrows headlines, whereas others have been around for decades without being properly addressed. I hope you enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed working with the various authors and friends during its development. Donald Withers, CEO and Cofounder of TheTrainingCo.

Jack Wiles, on Social Engineering offers up a potpourri of tips, tricks, vulnerabilities, and lessons learned from 30-plus years of experience in the worlds of both physical and technical security.

Russ Rogers on the Basics of Penetration Testing illustrates the standard methodology for penetration testing: information gathering, network enumeration, vulnerability identification, vulnerability exploitation, privilege escalation, expansion of reach, future access, and information compromise.

Johnny Long on No Tech Hacking shows how to hack without touching a computer using tailgating, lock bumping, shoulder surfing, and dumpster diving.

book coverGNU/Linux is an immensely popular operating system that is both extremely stable and reliable. But it can also induce minor headaches at the most inopportune times, if you're not fully up to speed with its capabilities. A unique approach to running and administering Linux systems, Linux Annoyances for Geeks addresses the many poorly documented and under-appreciated topics that make the difference between a system you struggle with and a system you really enjoy. This book is for power users and system administrators who want to clear away barriers to using Linux for themselves and for less-trained users in their organizations. This book meticulously tells you how to get a stubborn wireless card to work under Linux, and reveals little-known sources for wireless driversand information. It tells you how to add extra security to your systems, such as boot passwords, and how to use tools such as rescue disks to overcome overly zealous security measures in a pinch. In every area of desktop and server use, the book is chock full of advice based on hard-earned experience.

Dealing With Bullies, Idiots, Back-stabbers, And Other Managers from HellBeing saddled with a terrible supervisor can turn even the best job into a nightmare. Unfortunately, not every boss is the great symbol of managerial perfection one would hope for. In fact, more people than not consider themselves stuck with a "bad boss." But short of remaining miserable or quitting a job, what can be done about it?

Learning SQL on SQL Server 2005If you're new to databases, or need a SQL refresher, Learning SQL on SQL Server 2005 is an ideal step-by-step introduction to this database query tool, with everything you need for programming SQL using Microsoft's SQL Server 2005-one of the most powerful and popular database engines used today. Plenty of books explain database theory. This guide lets you apply the theory as you learn SQL. You don't need prior database knowledge, or even prior computer knowledge.

SQL Server is one of the most powerful database engines used today. Microsoft's latest release of SQL Server, SQL Server 2005, is a comprehensive database platform that provides secure and reliable storage for both relational and structured data, enabling one to build and manage high-performance data applications. SQL Server 2005's close integration with Microsoft Visual Studio, the Microsoft Office System, and a suite of new development tools set SQL Server 2005 apart from previous versions and from other database engines. This book is for those who wonder whether they should transit from Excel/VBA to Excel/VSTO. It was not written for people who want to learn programming in Excel, nor was it written for those (professional) developers who want to know all the ins and outs of VSTO programming.

This Excel user's guide to VSTO—the new Excel Macro programming language being promoted by Microsoft—shows how to perform the equivalent VBA actions with VSTO. The differences between the VSTO and VBA development environments are explained, helping Excel users decide if they should embrace VSTO or seek out other technologies.

My only intention is to help VBA users to make the right decision as to whether they should transit to VSTO and, if they decide to do so, to be aware of the hurdles they have to leap and the benefits they will reap.

English Grammar WorkbookFor Dummies doesn’t concentrate on what we English teachers (yes, I confess I am one) call descriptive grammar— the kind where you circle all the nouns and draw little triangles around the prepositions. A closely guarded English-teacher secret is that you don’t need to know any of that terminology (well, hardly any) to master grammar. Instead, English Grammar Workbook For Dummies concentrates on functional grammar— what goes where in real-life speech and writing.

Each chapter begins with a quick explanation of the rules (don’t smoke, don’t stick your chewing gum on the bedpost, be sure your sentence is complete, and so forth). Okay, I’m kidding about the smoking and the chewing gum, but you get the idea. I start off telling you what’s right and wrong in standard English usage.

The phrasal verbs in this book are arranged in alphabetical order according to the particles, so that "look after" comes before "bring up", but you can do the pages in any order, as each page deals with a separate verb. There are also ten revision pages, which bring together verbs that have been covered in the other pages.

Firewalls for Dummies 2nd EditionWith more and more small-office and home computers being left connected to the Internet at all times, the owners of those machines are being faced with problems that used to confront only big operations. The authors of Firewalls for Dummies spread the message: everyone with a cable modem, data satellite dish, or DSL connection needs a firewall now. Thankfully, though, these guys go beyond merely showing how to set up turnkey personal firewall products–too many Dummies books explain the obvious and the generally intuitive–and reveal how to set up the sorts of firewalls that protect sizable networks. By understanding these techniques, small operators can plan for growth and improve their level of protection. What's more, this book provides a serious explanation of corporate firewall products and techniques that's appropriate for people who build and maintain big systems. The authors generally steer away from showing how to configure specific firewall products, though a few of the biggies–Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server, BlackICE, ZoneAlarm, and Check Point FireWall-1–get comparative overview coverage. Mostly, they favor more general firewall configuration strategies and techniques. These they explain with a lot of prose, a fair number of conceptual diagrams, and tables that sum up permission rules. This is a worthwhile read

This is a textbook for intermediate students of English who need to study and practice using the grammar of the languate. It can be used as a classroom text of for self-study. It will be specially usefull in cases where, in the teacher's view, existing course material do not provide adequate coverage of grammar.

This book is intended mainly for intermediate students (that is, students who have already studied the basic structures of English). It concentrates on those structures which intermadiate students want to use but which often cause difficulty. The book will probably be most useful at middle and upper-intermediate levels (where all or nearly all of the material will be relevant), and can serve both as a basis for review and as a means of practicing new material. The book will also be useful for more advanced students who still make a log of grammatical mistakes and who need a book for reference and practice.

    book cover

This book has been written to help you learn new vocabulary. You already know hundreds of English words, but to speak and write English in normal situations you need at least 1-2,000 words. In this book, there are around 1,250 new words and phrases for you to learn. You will find them on the left-hand page of each unit. Every new word or phrase is used in a sentence or in a conversation, or has a picture with it, or has some explanation of what it means. On the right-hand page there are exercises and other activities to help you practice using the words and to help you to remember them.

The book has been written so that you can use it yourself, without teacher. You can do the units in any order you like, but we believe it is a good idea if you do Units 1 and 2 first, as they will help you to work the rest of the book in the best possible way.

You should also have a dictionary with you when you use the book. This is because sometimes you may want to check the meaning of something, or find a word in your own language to help you remember the English word. Sometimes, you will also need a dictionary for the exercises; we will tell you when this is so.

Computer NetworksThe world's leading introduction to networking-fully updated for tomorrow's key technologies.

Computer Networks, Fourth Edition is the ideal introduction to today's networks-and tomorrow's. This classic best seller has been thoroughly updated to reflect the newest and most important networking technologies with a special emphasis on wireless networking, including 802.11, Bluetooth, broadband wireless, ad hoc networks, i-mode, and WAP. But fixed networks have not been ignored either with coverage of ADSL, gigabit Ethernet, peer-to-peer networks, NAT, and MPLS. And there is lots of new material on applications, including over 60 pages on the Web, plus Internet radio, voice over IP, and video on demand. Finally, the coverage of network security has been revised and expanded to fill an entire chapter.

Author, educator, and researcher Andrew S. Tanenbaum, winner of the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, carefully explains how networks work on the inside, from underlying hardware at the physical layer up through the top-level application layer. Tanenbaum covers all this and more:

-Physical layer (e.g., copper, fiber, wireless, satellites, and Internet over cable)

-Data link layer (e.g., protocol principles, protocol verification, HDLC, and PPP)

-MAC Sublayer (e.g., gigabit Ethernet, 802.11, broadband wireless, and switching)

-Network layer (e.g., routing algorithms, congestion control, QoS, IPv4, and IPv6)

-Transport layer (e.g., socket programming, UDP, TCP, RTP, and network performance)

-Application layer (e.g., e-mail, the Web, PHP, wireless Web, MP3, and streaming audio)

-Network security (e.g., AES, RSA, quantum cryptography, IPsec, and Web security)

-The book gives detailed descriptions of the principles associated with each layer and presents many examples drawn from the Internet and wireless networks.

Programming Embedded Systems in C and C++ - O’ReillyEmbedded software is in almost every electronic device designed today. There is software hidden away inside our watches, microwaves, VCRs, cellular telephones, and pagers; the military uses embedded software to guide smart missiles and detect enemy aircraft; communications satellites, space probes, and modern medicine would be nearly impossible without it. Of course, someone has to write all that software, and there are thousands of computer scientists, electrical engineers, and other professionals who actually do. Each embedded system is unique and highly customized to the application at hand. As a result, embedded systems programming is a widely varying field that can take years to master. However, if you have some programming experience and are familiar with C or C++, you’re ready to learn how to write embedded software. The hands-on, no-nonsense style of this book will help you get started by offering practical advice from someone who’s been in your shoes and wants to help you learn quickly. The techniques and code examples presented here are directly applicable to real-world embedded software projects of all sorts. Even if you’ve done some embedded programming before, you’ll still benefit from the topics in this book, which include:

Testing memory chips quickly and efficiently
    Writing and erasing Flash memory
Verifying nonvolatile memory contents with CRCs
Interfacing to on-chip and external peripherals
    Device driver design and implementation
Optimizing embedded software for size and speed

So whether you’re writing your first embedded program, designing the latest generation of hand-held whatchamacalits, or simply managing the people who do, this book is for you.

Political And Economic ImplicationsThis book is a cyber terrorism brief that outlines many of the recent terrorist activities, political objectives, and their use of cyberspace. Much of this book is dedicated to illustrating the use of the global information infrastructure by terrorists for the communication and coordination of distributed terrorist cells, the gathering of target intelligence, and the use of cyber criminal activities as a force multiplier for both physical attacks and infrastructure destabilization. This book identifies the underlying technologies of the global information infrastructure as a means for presenting how critical this emerging domain has become. It then discusses the current attack methods and lays out a series of scenarios for key industry sectors. Lastly, Cyber Terrorism: Political and Economic Implications puts forward prevention and response policies for reducing cyber terrorism activities in the context of traditional information security objectives.

People and systems are vulnerable to the methods and processes they employ to get things done. This is because they learn to trust their underlying successes and apply this trust to future applications of their approach. There is a clear link between the elimination of trust and the instillment of fear. It has been proposed that the attacks of September 11th in 2001 (i.e., when the World Trade Towers were destroyed, the Pentagon was damaged, the flight over Pennsylvania was downed, and thousands perished) occurred as a result of asymmetric thinking on the part of the terrorist group al Qaeda.

Excel is the most sophisticated spreadsheet program available in the world of personal Ecomputing. As such, this program is much more than just an electronic version of an accountant’s familiar green sheet for crunching numbers. For millions of users the world over, Excel is also their number one forms designer, their interface to the corporate database, as well as their premier charting program.

Given Excel’s indisputable versatility, it should come as no surprise that mastering the basics of the program, not to mention its finer points, is no small undertaking. My experience, however, in teaching adults to use all manner of Excel’s capabilities has convinced me that this mastery is greatly accelerated with just a modicum of hands-on experience judiciously applied to rather simple butrealistic data-related problems.

As its name suggests, Excel Workbook For Dummiesis designed to give you the kind of hands-on experience with all the major aspects of the program you need to start using the program for business or home with a certain degree of confidence and efficiency. As you’d expect from this type of book, the workbook is primarily composed of questions and exercises that give you plenty of opportunities to experience the purpose and benefits of Excel’s many features.
