Linux Bible 2006 Edition is here to open your eyes to what Linux is, where it came from, and where it’s going. But, most of all, the book is here to hand you Linux and help you get started. Because Linux is the operating system of free speech and free choice, Linux Bible gives you choices in selecting the Linux that is right for you.

Unlike other books on Linux, this book doesn’t tie you to one Linux distribution. The book teaches you the essentials of Linux graphical interfaces, shell commands, and basic system administration. Separate chapters break down most of the major Linux distributions available today. Then descriptions of the major software projects in most Linux distributions (KDE and GNOME desktops, Apache Web servers, Samba file and printer sharing, and so on) guide you in setting up and using those features, regardless of which Linux you choose.

To calm your fears that “free” software can’t be that good, this book guides you through the strange and circuitous path of open source software development that led to the Linux phenomenon. It also details the major companies and organizations that are behind Linux and the open source movement today.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the standard modeling language for software and systems development. This statement alone is a pretty conclusive argument for making UML part of your software repertoire, however it leaves some questions unanswered. Why is UML unified? What can be modeled? How is UML a language? And, probably most importantly, why should you care?

Systems design on any reasonably large scale is difficult. Anything from a simple desktop application to a full multi-tier enterprise scale system can be made up of hundredsand potentially thousandsof software and hardware components. How do you (and your team) keep track of which components are needed, what their jobs are, and how they meet your customers' requirements? Furthermore, how do you share your design with your colleagues to ensure the pieces work together? There are just too many details that can be misinterpreted or forgotten when developing a complex system without some help. This is where modelingand of course UMLcomes in.

This book teaches you how to create your own role-playing game (RPG) using Visual Basic and DirectX.I teach you,step-by-step,how to construct each part ofthe game using DirectX components such as Direct3D.Ifyou think RPGs are fun to play, wait until you start working on your very own! Constructing an RPG is far more interesting than playing one, because you are in complete control over the RPG world, and you can let your imagination loose to create adventures for others to enjoy.

Before you can get to the point where you can design an adventure and build an RPG with Visual Basic, you need to learn the language and get up to speed on DirectX.My goal with this book is to teach you just what you need to know in order to make this happen, without going into detail. You learn what you need to know to construct an RPG and nothing more.

Today, digital audio applications are part of our every dayl ives.Popular examples include audio CDs, MP3 audio players, radio broadcasts, TV or video DVDs, video games, digital cameras with sound track, digital camcorders, telephones, telephone answering machines and telephone enquiries using speech or word recognition. Various new and advanced audiovisual applications and services become possible based on audio content analysis and description. Search engines or specific filters can use the extracted description to help users navigate or browse through large collections of data. Digital analysis may discriminate whether an audio file contains speech, music or other audio entities, how many speakers are contained in a speech segment, what gender they are and even which persons are speaking. Spoken content may be identified and converted to text.

MS SQL Server 2005 Notification ServicesMS SQL Server 2005 Notification Services covers the basic problems of notification applications, describes the SQL Notification Services platform and describes how to use it to build rich, scalable notification applications. Written by Shyam Pather, the Technical Lead for the SQL Notification Services Team, this book is based on his three years of experience teaching SQL Notification Services to new customers. This book is your complete resource for learning SQL Notification Services application development and the underlying architectural concepts.

Notification Services offers a simple, declarative programming model that lets you build your application with much less development effort than would be required if you were building it from scratch. Using this programming model, you can get a working prototype of a typical application running in just a single day. Furthermore, the platform offers a number of sophisticated features, such as support for multiple languages and device types, scheduled subscriptions, user-defined matching logic, and multicast delivery, that you can incorporate into your applications by setting a few options. These kinds of beyond-the-obvious features set the most advanced notification applications apart from the rest.
