We reside in various communities and live in one world. Although we may reside in Beijing, China, on a kibbutz in Israel, or in Muleshoe, Texas, we are aware of the impact of world events on our lives.

This has not always been true. Throughout most of history, life generally was impacted by dominant qualities in one’s communityora region reachable within one day. Important events that impacted the lives of those living thousands of miles away generally were unknown and had little impact outside that immediate area. Now, however, knowledge of events that occur throughout the world can be received in real time and can impact others’ lives greatly.

Data Binding with Windows Forms 2.0 earns a gold star and a prized place in my development book library. Brian is an exceptional teacher of technology, best practices, and technique. He continues to educate at every presentation I attend; his book carries that quality to paper. I found this book to be highly informative and full of all the important steps and examples necessary to learn this technology. In this book, Brian demonstrates a firm grasp on the concepts and I really enjoy his efforts to promote best practices at every chance. Definitively a cover-to-cover read.

Visual Basic .NET WAS not written by Visual Basic programmers. The entire .NET family of languages was created by C programmers. C—and its cohort OOP—is an academic language. Visual Basic is a popular language. These facts have consequences.

The authors of this book are not beholden to any organization. We're not writing for MS Press, nor are we affiliated with any corporation or school. Indeed, we like to think that we're not dependent on anyone for our paycheck—other than you, dear reader—and can therefore be more objective than many of our colleagues.

MySQL is the world's most popular open-source database program.

MySQL is more like Micro$oft SQL Server (a server-based database program) than Access (mainly for desktop users). With MySQL running on a server, you can easily use it for business systems or database-driven websites.

Easy to use and configure, MySQL is also capable of industrial strength applications. Depending on the computer it’s installed on, MySQL can hold several terabytes of information per table.

Visual Studio .NET is filled with thousands of features and functionalities that make our lives as developers more efficient. Not only is it a code editor, compiler, and debugger, but it contains features to stress-test, analyze, and optimize you code, and to allow easy integration with code documentation reporting, or smart-device programming, such as the Pocket PC.

The number of features that Visual Studio .NET contains is immense. I doubt that many .NET developers know all of its features, shortcuts, and functionalities. Being a fan of keyboard shortcuts and tidbits that make my life as a developer better, or simply faster, I began to collect Visual Studio .NET tips and tricks. When startet out as a small list became bigger and bigger, leading to workshops I gave in Visual Studio .NET. Those workshops finally evolved into this book.

MS Visual Basic has the largest user base of any development language in the world, and the ranks are growing. Estimates put the number of users of Visual Basic at about 3 million. Once considered a hobbyist's language, Visual Basic has quickly gained the respect of serious developers and is now widely used in corporate and other commercial environments. Visual Basic .NET further raises the bar, as it now shares the common language runtime used by Visual C# .NET and other MS .NET languages.

It also shares the same IDE, debugging tools, and much more. In the past, there were many arguments about the utility of Visual Basic in building enterprise solutions. Much of this debate pitted the RAD attributes of Visual Basic against the power attributes of C++. Visual Basic was capable of doing amazing things, but often you had to resort to API calls and third-party components to get "under the hood" of MS Windows. Now, the playing field is truly level. Visual Basic .NET's generous flexibility, combined with its focus on maintaining backward compatibility, has always made it an extremely powerful language. Unfortunately, these attributes also seem to encourage sloppy programming, and that simply won't do in today's fast-paced development environments.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a method of remotely storing and receiving data using devices called RFID tags. RFID tags can be small adhesive stickers containing antennas that allow them to receive and respond to transmissions from RFID transmitters. RFID tags are used to identify and track everything from Exxon EZ passes to dogs to beer kegs to library books. RFID tags use a standard that has already been hacked by several researchers.

If you’re reading this, you are likely ready to work with the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and are seeking some direction.

This book provides information about XMLand the issues involved in designing XML-based solutions for business problems. It does so in a case-study format, with each chapter taking one part of the single main project, and leading you through the design of a solution for that, so that by the end of the book, you will understand every aspect of using XMLto design business solutions.

After a broad-stroke introduction to XMLtechnologies, the book surveys solutions to typical business and technology needs that are best solved using XML. You’ll tackle XMLmarkup—more specifically, the kind of markup that you find “under the hood” of everyday applications and web services. Commonly available resources are used to show you the fundamentals of what XMLmarkup is, how to get at valuable information through these resources, and how to begin providing valuable information to others through XML.

Software is built on abstractions. Pick the right ones, and programming will flow naturally from design; modules will have small and simple interfaces; and new functionality will more likely fit in without extensive reorganization. Pick the wrong ones, and programming will be a series of nasty surprises: interfaces will become baroque and clumsy as they are forced to accommodate unanticipated interactions, and even the simplest of changes will be hard to make. No amount of refactoring, bar starting again from scratch, can rescue a system built on flawed concepts.
