Distributed Data Warehousing Using Web Technology (AMACOM)How to transform raw data into knowledge–and empower businesses with a significant competitive edge!

What is a "data warehouse?" It's a database that's structured to support business decision making. A data warehouse organizes, analyzes, and synthesizes huge amounts of raw data–so that it's intelligible and useful to employees. Until recently, all that data would be stored in centralized, monolithic storage media. It was cumbersome to manage, slow to operate, and expensive to maintain.

Internet technology has changed all that forever! In this insightful book, managers and information technology professionals get a clear-eyed overview of what's required to set up and use distributed data warehouses–which utilize multiple computers (networked together via Internet technology) to store and access data as needed. The book takes a look at:

* Basic functions and benefits of a distributed data warehouse and what's required to set one up * Many of the complex technical issues involved, such as placement of functions and data, web-enabled computing technologies, object technologies, and more * The full spectrum of what a data warehouse can deliver–and how to exploit it * How to present and justify a business case for creating a data warehouse.

This book is about writing software that makes the most effective use of the system you're running on - code that interfaces directly with the kernel and core system libraries, including the shell, text editor, compiler, debugger, core utilities, and system daemons. The majority of both Unix and Linux code is still written at the system level, and "Linux System Programming" focuses on everything above the kernel, where applications such as Apache, bash, cp, vim, Emacs, gcc, gdb, glibc, ls, mv, and X exist. Written primarily for engineers looking to program (better) at the low level, this book is an ideal teaching tool for any programmer. Even with the trend toward high-level development, either through web software (such as PHP) or managed code (C#), someone still has to write the PHP interpreter and the C# virtual machine. "Linux System Programming" gives you an understanding of core internals that makes for better code, no matter where it appears in the stack. Debugging high-level code often requires you to understand the system calls and kernel behavior of your operating system, too.

Key topics include: an overview of Linux, the kernel, the C library, and the C compiler; reading from and writing to files, along with other basic file I/O operations, including how the Linux kernel implements and manages file I/O; buffer size management, including the Standard I/O library; advanced I/O interfaces, memory mappings, and optimization techniques; the family of system calls for basic process management; advanced process management, including real-time processes; file and directories-creating, moving, copying, deleting, and managing them; memory management - interfaces for allocating memory, managing the memory you have, and optimizing your memory access; signals and their role on a Unix system, plus basic and advanced signal interfaces; and, time, sleeping, and clock management, starting with the basics and continuing through POSIX clocks and high resolution timers. With "Linux System Programming", you will be able to take an in-depth look at Linux from both a theoretical and an applied perspective as you cover a wide range of programming topics.

UML, the Universal Modeling Language, was the first language designed to fulfill the requirement for "universality." However, it is a software-specific language, and does not support the needs of engineers designing from the broader systems-based perspective. Therefore, SysML was created. It has been steadily gaining popularity, and many companies, especially in the heavily-regulated Defense, Automotive, Aerospace, Medical Device and Telecomms industries, are already using SysML, or are plannning to switch over to it in the near future. However, little information is currently available on the market regarding SysML. Its use is just on the crest of becoming a widespread phenomenon, and so thousands of software engineers are now beginning to look for training and resources. The proposed book will provide an introduction to SysML, and instruction on how to implement it, for all these new users.

Videogame art is developing as an area of burgeoning interest, departing from embryonic roots into a flourishing division of scholarly study. The collection provides both an overview of the field, positioning it within a social and commercial context with reference to other forms of digital and pictorial art, and to the mainstream videogames industry. The book details specialized areas of the subject such as machinima and games console artwork and includes a series of individual interviews with both established and emerging videogame artists. In addition to the aesthetic design and production of this area of digital art, contributors examine works of politically-orientated videogame art which depict a critical engagement with the social or cultural issues of its time. Following this review of the genre's artistic elements, the book diverts into a broader critical appraisal of the commercial games industry, posing several polemical pieces upon the present quality and originality of video games in general. The book provides a thorough yet accessible introduction to those interested and involved in the academic study of videogame art. Download Here

XML, the standardized format of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) aims to make application development and integration very simple. It is a data format and framework that has been adopted as the basis for information exchange by the software development community. It is so powerful that Microsoft developed their entire .NET platform around using XML.

It is simple to learn, flexible to use and easy to understand. It works with applications, the internet and databases and is platform independent meaning it can be used to share data between a variety of database and application types and formats.

Garth Schulte, the instructor for this series, details how XML came to life, why it is needed and how you can use it. This creates a very informative foundation of knowledge that will benefit programmers, administrators and engineers alike. If your job entails any type of interface with databases, connectivity of applications or transferring of information, you need to watch these videos.Programmers will find the videos a great place to start if they are considering an MCAD or MCSD for .NET certification track. The series contains 14 videos that average 30 minutes in length. This provides for 7 hours of in-depth instruction that is designed to entertain as well as educate. You won't fall asleep watching these. Garth has a great personality that shines through in his presentation of the material. He is truly passionate about programming and what you can create with a computer.

C++ Primer (4th Edition)This new edition of C++ Primer, a favorite choice for a first C++ book, has been greatly improved with the latest and greatest on C++, stressing the built-in language features of the C++ Standard Library. For this new version–weighing in at a massive 1,237 pages–Stanley Lippman, a well-known C++ expert, teams up with Josée Lajoie, who has helped define the C++ international language standard. The new material is excellent for programmers who want to get the most out of new and advanced features in the language.

The authors still introduce the basics of C++, including data types and pointers, but quickly move on to stress how to get the most out of the built-in features of ISO-standard C++. Throughout this book built-in support for the C++ Standard Library, such as container classes like vectors and maps, and other standard features, such as the string class, are integrated into a tried-and- proven basic-language tutorial.Downlad Here

Amazon.com Mashups (with source code)This book is all about how to take data from disparate sources on the Web and combine that data to make new and innovative applications (affectionately called mashups). The Internet is at an inflection point, and all across the Web, more and more sites are exposing their data through Web services and eXtensible Markup Language (XML).

This is great news, because it means you as the developer can now build much more sophisticated applications that previously either would not have been possible, or would have required hundreds of developers to create. This book shows you how to take advantage of these data sources, and combine them to form new and never-before imagined applications.

This book is aimed at programmers. Not just server-side gals or user interface guys, I’m talking about the soup-to-nuts programmer. As you’ll see, between messaging, presentation, server-side scripting, and so on, there are a lot of moving parts with any given mashup. Some basic understanding of Web and server technologies is expected. If you’re up to speed on XML, Web services, Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML), JavaScript, and ASP.NET, then you should have no problems. If not, don’t worry. Everything in the book is explained in detail, and because source code is supplied, you should be able to leverage this text regardless of your experience level.

All design starts with an idea, and generating good ideas is what separates the wheat from the chaff. But unlike software than can easily be learned, the practice of generating ideas is far more complex. In Interaction Design: Process and Inspiration, acclaimed designer Brendan Dawes takes you through some of the processes he employs in his own work. He’ll show you how he approaches projects as a series of “sketches,” more akin to working with pencil and paper than pushing pixels. From interface design, usability, and using sound to branding, designing for the audience, and experimental approaches, Interaction Design offers an award-winning designer’s insight into the techniques he uses every day to push, play, and constantly explore the realm of possibilities in interactive design.

Computer Architecture - A Quantitative Approach 3rd editionThis best-selling title, considered for over a decade to be essential reading for every serious student and practitioner of computer design, has been updated throughout to address the most important trends facing computer designers today. In this edition, the authors bring their trademark method of quantitative analysis not only to high performance desktop machine design, but also to the design of embedded and server systems. They have illustrated their principles with designs from all three of these domains, including examples from consumer electronics, multimedia and web technologies, and high performance computing.

The book retains its highly rated features: Fallacies and Pitfalls, which share the hard-won lessons of real designers; Historical Perspectives, which provide a deeper look at computer design history; Putting it all Together, which present a design example that illustrates the principles of the chapter; Worked Examples, which challenge the reader to apply the concepts, theories and methods in smaller scale problems; and Cross-Cutting Issues, which show how the ideas covered in one chapter interact with those presented in others. In addition, a new feature, Another View, presents brief design examples in one of the three domains other than the one chosen for Putting It All Together.

The authors present a new organization of the material as well, reducing the overlap with their other text, Computer Organization and Design: A Hardware/Software Approach 2/e, and offering more in-depth treatment of advanced topics in multithreading, instruction level parallelism, VLIW architectures, memory hierarchies, storage devices and network technologies.

Visualization of Scientific Parallel ProgramsThe substantial effort of parallelizing scientific programs is only justified if the resulting codes are efficient. Thus, all types of performance tuning are important to parallel software development. But performance improvements are much more difficult to achieve with parallel programs than with sequential programs. One way to overcome this difficulty is to bring in graphical tools. This monograph covers recent developments in parallel program visualization techniques and tools and demonstrates the application of specific visualization techniques and software tools to scientific parallel programs. The solution of initial value problems of ordinary differential equations, and numerical integration are treated in detail as two important examples. (more…)

The book first discusses the various integration approaches available and introduces the Enterprise Service Bus, which is a new Architectural pattern that can facilitate integrating services. ESB provides different forms of mediation services including routing and transformation. Java Business Integration (JBI) provides a collaboration framework that provides standard interfaces for integration components and protocols to plug into, thus allowing the assembly of Service-Oriented Integration (SOI) frameworks following the ESB pattern. JBI is based on JSR 208, which is an extension of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Once JBI and ESB are introduced, we look at how we have been doing service integration without either of these using traditional J2EE. The book then slowly introduces ESB and, with the help of code, showcases how easily things can be done using JBI.

How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers DirectlyThough it may not yet have affected the value of 30 seconds of Super Bowl advertising, PR insider Scott argues that understanding the growing irrelevance of marketing's "old rules" is vital to thriving in the new media jungle. Already apparent in newspapers and magazines (with sharp downturns in circulation and ads), radio (on the losing end of the iPod revolution) and direct mail (digitally replaced by spam), the imminent fall of traditional mass media marketing means new opportunities for legions of smaller companies and independent professionals who need to reach niche markets cheaply and effectively. The way Scott sees it, this is also good news for consumers: the online culture of integrity and information tends to produce quality content for less, as opposed to the vapid, one-sided and pricey advertising of print media and television. Scott provides the technical novice a thoughtful and accessible guide to cutting-edge media arenas and formats such as RSS, vodcasts and viral marketing, without neglecting the fact that technological wizardry can't substitute for a well-thought out marketing program. Besides emphasizing fundamentals like defining one's audience, Scott also drills home the ethos and etiquette of the web, encouraging content that's both useful and unobtrusive. This excellent look at the basics of new-millennial marketing should find use in the hands of any serious PR professional making the transition.

Never before have there been so many laws designed to keep corporations honest. New laws and regulations force companies to develop stronger ethics policies and the shareholders themselves are holding publicly traded companies accountable for their practices. Consumers are also concerned over the privacy of their personal information and current and emerging legislation is reflecting this trend. Under these conditions, it can be difficult to know where to turn for reliable, applicable advice.

The sixth edition of the Information Security Management Handbook addresses up-to-date issues in this increasingly important area. It balances contemporary articles with relevant articles from past editions to bring you a well grounded view of the subject. The contributions cover questions important to those tasked with securing information assets including the appropriate deployment of valuable resources as well as dealing with legal compliance, investigations, and ethics. Promoting the view that the management ethics and values of an organization leads directly to its information security program and the technical, physical, and administrative controls to be implemented, the book explores topics such as risk assessments; metrics; security governance, architecture, and design; emerging threats; standards; and business continuity and disaster recovery. The text also discusses physical security including access control and cryptography, and a plethora of technology issues such as application controls, network security, virus controls, and hacking.

A torrent of Internet blogs has poured from U.S. forces overseas, providing a unique view of our wars. Retired officer and blogger Burden does not claim this collection of extracts represents a cross section of what's available, nor does he disguise his biases. All the officers in the book are competent; all the enlisted men and women are brave; and all the husbands love their wives and vice versa. Every writer supports America's war aims, admires the President, despises enemy fighters (generally referred to as terrorists) and holds a low opinion of Americans who oppose the war (generally referred to as liberals). The best (if sometimes troublesome) selections relate personal experiences: a woman trucker is severely wounded; a tanker fights his way into Fallujah, enthusiastically describing the men he kills; a base commander fires an obstreperous Iraqi employee. More literary efforts are less successful, with several wince-inducing attempts at poetic battlefield imagery. Tributes to fallen comrades often fall into mawkishness. Burden warns that unfettered war blogging may soon disappear under the heavy hand of military censorship, but if our leaders are worried about criticism of their policies, Burden's book will reassure them.

Notes Towards a Philosophy of EcstasyThis book explores the imaginative possibilities for philosophy created by Nietzsche's sustained reflection on the phenomenon of ecstasy. From The Birth of Tragedy to his experimental "physiology of art," Nietzsche examines the aesthetic, erotic, and sacred dimensions of rapture, hinting at how an ecstatic philosophy is realized in his elusive doctrine of Eternal Return. Jill Marsden pursues the implications of this legacy for contemporary Continental thought via analyses of such voyages in ecstasy as Kant, Schopenhauer, Schreber, and Bataille.

Windows Vista is Micro$oft's most important software release in more than a decade. It offers users an abundance of new and upgraded features that were more than five years in the making: a gorgeous, glass-like visual overhaul; superior searching and organization tools; a multimedia and collaboration suite; and above all, a massive, top-to-bottom security-shield overhaul. There's scarcely a single feature of the older versions of Windows that hasn't been tweaked, overhauled, or replaced entirely.

Thankfully, Windows Vista: The Missing Manual offers coverage of all five versions. Like its predecessors, this book from New York Times columnist, bestselling author, and Missing Manuals creator David Pogue illuminates its subject with technical insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners, veteran standalone PC users, and those who know their way around a network.

Pro CSS and HTML Design PatternsDesign patterns have been used with great success in software programming. They improve productivity, creativity, and efficiency in web design and development, and they reduce code bloat and complexity. In the context of CSS and HTML, design patterns are sets of common functionality that work across various browsers and screen readers, without sacrificing design values or accessibility or relying on hacks and filters. But until now they have not been applied systematically to HTML and CSS web design and development.

With the help of Pro CSS and HTML Design Patterns, you can reap the benefits of using design patterns in your HTML and CSS code. The book provides you with all the CSS and HTML design patterns you need. Web development expert and author Michael Bowers then takes you through multiple design patterns for text, backgrounds, borders, images, forms, layouts, and much more. He shows you exactly how each one works, and how to use them most effectively in your own projects. After you learn about these design patterns, youll wonder how you ever developed web sites without them!

Chance Rules in Everyday LifeMastering the concepts of probability can cast new light on situations in which randomness and chance appear to rule. With an emphasis on why probability works and how it can be applied, Henk Tijms introduces the reader to the world of probability in an informal way. Lotteries and casino games provide a natural source of motivation, and he carefully discusses these with many worked examples to illustrate the key concepts from probability theory. Henk Tijms has been a professor in Operations Research at the Vrije University in Amsterdam since 1976. He is the author of several textbooks, including A First Course in Stochastic Models (Wiley, 2003), as well as numerous papers on applied probability and stochastic optimization in international journals including Applied Probability and Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences and others.

Instead, you recommend that you perform each step and then analyze the results of your actions in detail. To complete these labs yourself, you will need two computers equipped as described in the Lab Setup section. You also need to have a foundation in Networking and TCP/IP concepts.

Configuration Management Made EasyCompetent system administrators know their success hinges upon being able to perform often tedious tasks with rigor and punctuality. Such metrics are often achieved only by instituting a considerable degree of automation, something that has become even more crucial as IT environments continue to scale both in terms of size and complexity. One of the most powerful system administration tools to be released is Puppet, a solution capable of automating nearly every aspect of a system administrator’s job, from user management, to software installation, to even configuring server services such as FTP and LDAP.

Pulling Strings with Puppet: Configuration Management Made Easy is the first book to introduce the powerful Puppet system administration tool. Author James Turnbull will guide you through Puppet’s key features, showing you how to install and configure the software, create automated Puppet tasks, known as recipes, and even create reporting solutions and extend Puppet further to your own needs. A bonus chapter is included covering the Facter library, which makes it a breeze to automate the retrieval of server configuration details such as IP and MAC addresses.

Illustrated C# 2008 (Expert’s Voice in .Net)The unique, visual format of Illustrated C# 2008 has been specially created by author, and teacher of development methods, Daniel Solis. The concise text, use of tables to clarify language features, frequent figures and diagrams, as well as focused code samples all combine to create a unique approach that will help you understand and get to work with C# fast.

It was while teaching numerous seminars on various programming languages that the author realized the immense power diagrams have in explaining programming language concepts. Most people learn quicker and retain information better when the material is presented in a clean, simple, visual format. To achieve this result in his book, Solis uses concise text and bulleted lists, tables to clarify and summarize language features, as well as his renowned, ubiquitous figures and diagrams. Each language feature is illustrated with a concise and focused code sample for complete clarity.

Following an overview of the .NET platform and the role played by C#, you’ll soon move into exploring the C# language in its entirety, including all the new C# 2008 features right down to the most complex topics involved in C#. If you’re a C++ or VB programmer migrating to C# 2008, this book will be invaluable; the unique visual approach offers a far from lightweight treatment of C# 2008, so even the most experienced programmers will come away with a deeper understanding of the C# language.

Practical Data Analysis and Reporting with BIRTBIRT, which stands for Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools, is an Eclipse-based open-source reporting system for Java and J2EE based web applications. Including the word "Tools" in the acronym is appropriate, since BIRT is in fact a collection of development tools and technologies used for developing reports utilizing the BIRT runtime framework component on your application server. BIRT isn't essentially a product, but a series of core technologies on top of which products and solutions are built, similar in fashion to the Eclipse framework. This book has a fast-paced, task-driven, tutorial style, which provides understanding and structure, not just lists of steps to follow. The focus is on the most visible and familiar product built with the BIRT framework, which is the BIRT Report Designer. Accelerated VB 2008Visual Basic 2008 offers powerful new features, and Accelerated VB 2008 is the fastest path to mastering them, and the rest of Visual Basic, for both experienced Visual Basic programmers moving to VB 2008 and programmers moving to Visual Basic from another object–oriented language. Many books introduce VB, but very few also explain how to use it optimally with the .NET common language runtime (CLR). This book teaches both core Visual Basic language concepts and how to wisely employ VB idioms and object–oriented design patterns to exploit the power of VB and the CLR.

Accelerated VB 2008 is both a rapid tutorial and a permanent reference. You’ll quickly master VB syntax while learning how the CLR simplifies many programming tasks. You’ll also learn best practices that ensure your code will be efficient, reusable, and robust. SQL Server 2005 Bible (with source code)Like all books in the Bible series, you can expect to find both hands-on tutorials and real-world practical applications, as well as reference and background information that provides a context for what you are learning. However, to cover every minute detail of every command of this very complex product would consume thousands of pages, so it is the second goal of this book to provide a concise yet comprehensive guide to SQL Server 2005 based on the information I have found most useful in my experience as a database developer, consultant, and instructor. By the time you have completed the SQL Server 2005 Bible, you will be well prepared to develop and manage your SQL Server 2005 database.

Whether you are a database developer or a database administrator, whether you are just starting out, have one year of experience or five, this book contains material that will be useful to you. This book is written so that you can learn from my experience and the experience of the co-authors. Each chapter begins with the assumption that you’ve never seen the topic before, and then progresses through the subject, presenting the information that makes a difference.

Network Security Assessment 2nd Edition - O’Reilly How secure is your network? The best way to find out is to attack it. Network Security Assessment provides you with the tricks and tools professional security consultants use to identify and assess risks in Internet-based networks-the same penetration testing model they use to secure government, military, and commercial networks. With this book, you can adopt, refine, and reuse this testing model to design and deploy networks that are hardened and immune from attack.

Network Security Assessment demonstrates how a determined attacker scours Internet-based networks in search of vulnerable components, from the network to the application level. This new edition is up-to-date on the latest hacking techniques, but rather than focus on individual issues, it looks at the bigger picture by grouping and analyzing threats at a high-level. By grouping threats in this way, you learn to create defensive strategies against entire attack categories, providing protection now and into the future.

The best paper airplanes you’ll ever flyThree simple designs are here, guaranteed to be "the best paper airplanes on the planet." We cannot certify that, but the ones we made flew splendidly. The authors are proud of record indoor flights of between 60 and 80 feet, hand-launched. This small guide is as close to physics as to technology, for it suggests the principles of good results–although it also includes precise instructions for the folding. You have to trim a paper airplane; if not, it will fly like a rock. "This is not an opinion. It is a guarantee," and grade-school builders are not excepted. Symmetry is the aim, carefully secured. "The left side MUST look just like the right." Here is how to check on that and how to adjust, with five troubleshooting hints, plus launch instructions for indoors and out.

Advanced ApplicationsUnified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose notation language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a programmer defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure.

Applying UML addresses the practical issues faced by users in adopting UML. As the title suggests, it helps the reader in actually applying UML to real life situations, rather than just in learning the language. The book covers in depth detail of UML, including notation on profiles and extensions. The scope of the book assumes prior experience in software engineering and/or business modeling, an understanding of object-oriented concepts and a basic knowledge of UML.

    * Case study driven approach covering a wide range of issues
    * Contains advanced tutorial material to aid learning
    * Focuses on practical issues in the application of UML

Building an Optimizing CompilerBuilding compilers has been a challenging activity since the advent of digital computers in the late 1940s and early 1950s. At that time, implementing the concept of automatic translation from a form familiar to mathematicians into computer instructions was a difficult task. One needed to figure out how to translate arithmetic expressions into instructions, how to store data in memory, and how to choose instructions to build procedures and functions. During the late 1950s and 1960s these processes were automated to the extent that simple compilers could be written by most computer science professionals. In fact, the concept of “small languages” with corresponding translators is fundamental in the UNIX community.

This book describes one design for the optimization and code-generation phases of such a compiler. Many compiler books are available for describing the analysis of programming languages. They emphasize the processes of lexical analysis, parsing, and semantic analysis. Several books are also available for describing compilation processes for vector and parallel processors. This book describes the compilation of efficient programs for a single superscalar RISC processor, including the ordering and structure of algorithms and efficient data structures.

Learning ActionScript 3.0: A Beginner’s GuideIn this book, authors Rich Shupe and Zevan Rosser share the knowledge they've gained from their years as multimedia developers/designers and teachers. Learning ActionScript 3.0 gives you a solid foundation in the language of Flash and demonstrates how you can use it for practical, everyday projects. The authors do more than just give you a collection of sample scripts. Written for those of you new to ActionScript 3.0, the book describes how ActionScript and Flash work, giving you a clear look into essential topics such as logic, event handling, displaying content, migrating legacy projects to ActionScript 3.0, classes, and much more. You will learn important techniques through hands-on exercises, and then build on those skills as chapters progress. ActionScript 3.0 represents a significant change for many Flash users, and a steeper learning curve for the uninitiated. This book will help guide you through a variety of scripting scenarios. Rather than relying heavily on prior knowledge of object-oriented programming (OOP), topics are explained in focused examples that originate in the timeline, with optional companion classes for those already comfortable with their use. As chapters progress, the book introduces more and more OOP techniques, allowing you to choose which scripting approach you prefer. Learning ActionScript 3.0 reveals: New ways to harness the power and performance of AS3 Common mistakes that people make with the language Essential coverage of text, sound, video, XML, drawing with code, and more Migration issues from AS1 and AS2 to AS3 Simultaneous development of procedural and object-oriented techniques Tips that go beyond simple script collections, including how toapproach a project and which resources can help you along the way The companion web site contains material for all the exercises in the book, as well as short quizzes to make sure you're up to speed with key concepts. ActionScript 3.0 is a different animal from previous versions, and Learning ActionScript 3.0 teaches everything that web designers, GUI-based Flash developers, and those new to ActionScript need to start using the language.

Mr. Neighborly’s Humble Little Ruby BookRuby has taken the programming world by storm.  With the slow decline of Java and the catalyst of Rails, it has risen to become one of the most popular programming languages, rising to #10 on the TIOBE index and winning their "Programming Language of the Year" award.
Mr. Neighborly's Humble Little Ruby Book is a book about this fine language, but it is not a language book per se.  It is perhaps best described as a mix between your favorite novel, your favorite Spanish textbook, and a Richard Simmons exercise video: it walks you through the very basics of working with Ruby, but by the end of it, you'll no doubt be
sweatin' it to the oldies.   It covers the base syntax of the language, including working with values, flow control, and object oriented programming, into some of the library functionality of Ruby, such as databases, web services, and string manipulation.

Expect this book to rock your world.  Or at least teach you a programming language.

Competitive AdvantageCOMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE introduces a whole new way of understanding what a firm does. Porter's groundbreaking concept of the value chain disaggregates a company into 'activities', or the discrete functions or processes that represent the elemental building blocks of competitive advantage. Now an essential part of international business thinking, COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE takes strategy from broad vision to an internally consistent configuration of activities. Its powerful framework provides the tools to understand the drivers of cost and a company's relative cost position. Porter's value chain enables managers to isolate the underlying sources of buyer value that will command a premium price, and the reasons why one product or service substitutes for another. He shows how competitive advantage lies not only in activities themselves but in the way activities relate to each other, to supplier activities, and to customer activities. That the phrases 'competitive advantage' and 'sustainable competitive advantage' have become commonplace is testimony to the power of Porter's ideas. COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE has guided countless companies, business school students, and scholars in understanding the roots of competition. Porter's work captures the extraordinary complexity of competition in a way that makes strategy both concrete and actionable.

The book examines the impact of accidental and malicious intentional action and inaction on information security and IA. Innovative long-term vendor, technology, and application-independent strategies show you how to protect your critical systems and data from accidental and intentional action and inaction that could lead to system failure or compromise. The author presents step-by-step, in-depth processes for defining information security and assurance goals, performing vulnerability and threat analysis, implementing and verifying the effectiveness of threat control measures, and conducting accident and incident investigations. She explores real-world strategies applicable to all systems, from small systems supporting a home-based business to those of a multinational corporation, government agency, or critical infrastructure system. The information revolution has brought its share of risks. Exploring the synergy between security, safety, and reliability engineering, A Practical Guide to Security Engineering and Information Assurance consolidates andorganizes current thinking about information security/IA techniques, approaches, and best practices. As this book will show you, there is considerably more to information security/IA than firewalls, encryption, and virus protection.

In the past 20 years, Adobe Systems has become synonymous with great design tools, and the company's impact on how we work in publishing, graphic arts, and on the Web is unmatched. Join Pfiffner on a colorful journey from the roots of the desktop publishing revolution through the rise of the Web and interactive design. Along the way, you'll witness the birth and evolution of PostScript, the explosion of the Photoshop market, the realization of the paperless office, and other events that have shaped the way we communicate.

Inside the Publishing Revolution is not one of those dull historical tomes you know and loathe from high school. Pfiffner packs its pages with lively, insightful interviews with world-class designers and illustrators, as well as personal insights and recollections from John Warnock, Chuck Geschke, Jonathan Seybold, and other publishing luminaries. Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, the book features galleries of historically significant work by leading artists and rare photographs from the Adobe archives. For added perspective, Pfiffner walks you through an illustrated timeline of the publishing revolution. As with history, the final chapter of the Adobe story remains to be written, so the book ends with an eye toward the future: an exclusive overview of the company's vision of publishing in the next decade.

Global Positioning Systems Inertial Navigation and Integration 2nd Edition - Wiley The only comprehensive guide to Kalman filtering and its applications to real-world GPS/INS problems

Written by recognized authorities in the field, this book provides engineers, computer scientists, and others with a working familiarity with the theory and contemporary applications of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Inertial Navigational Systems, and Kalman filters. Throughout, the focus is on solving real-world problems, with an emphasis on the effective use of state-of-the-art integration techniques for those systems, especially the application of Kalman filtering. To that end, the authors explore the various subtleties, common failures, and inherent limitations of the theory as it applies to real-world situations, and provide numerous detailed application examples and practice problems, including GPS-aided INS, modeling of gyros and accelerometers, and WAAS and LAAS.

Drawing upon their many years of experience with GPS, INS, and the Kalman filter, the authors present numerous design and implementation techniques not found in other professional references, including original techniques for:
    * Representing the problem in a mathematical model
    * Analyzing the performance of the GPS sensor as a function of model parameters
    * Implementing the mechanization equations in numerically stable algorithms
    * Assessing computation requirements
    * Testing the validity of results
    * Monitoring GPS, INS, and Kalman filter performance in operation

Path Oriented Program Analysis - Cambridge PressThis book presents a unique method for decomposing a computer program along its execution paths, for simplifying the subprograms so produced, and for recomposing a program from its subprograms. This method enables us to divide and conquer the complexity involved in understanding the computation performed by a program by decomposing it into a set of subprograms and then simplifying them to the furthest extent possible. The resulting simplified subprograms are generally more understandable than the original program as a whole. The method may also be used to simplify a piece of source code by following the path-oriented method of decomposition, simplication, and recomposition. The analysis may be carried out in such a way that the derivation of the analysis result constitutes a correctness proof. The method can be applied to any source code (or portion thereof) that prescribes the computation to be performed in terms of assignment statements, conditional statements, and loop constructs, regardless of the language or paradigm used.

A Developer’s Guide to SEOMaybe you're a great programmer or IT professional, but marketing isn't your thing. Or perhaps you're a tech-savvy search engine marketer who wants a peek under the hood of a search engine optimized web site. Search engine marketing is a field where technology and marketing are both critical and interdependent, because small changes in the implementation of a web site can make you or break you in search engine rankings. Furthermore, the fusion of technology and marketing know-how can create web site features that attract more visitors. The mission of this book is to help web developers create web sites that rank well with the major search engines, and to teach search engine marketers how to use technology to their advantage. We assert that neither marketing nor IT can exist in a vacuum, and it is essential that they not see themselves as opposing forces in an organization. They must work together. This book aims to educate both sides in that regard.

Head First Java, 2nd Edition - O’ReillyIt has taken four years, but with Head First Java the introductory Java book category has finally come of age. This is an excellent book, far more capable than any of the scores of Java-for-novices books that have come before it. Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates deserve rich kudos–and big sales–for developing this book's new way of teaching the Java programming language, because any reader with even a little bit of discipline will come away with true understanding of how the language works. Perhaps best of all, this is no protracted "Hello, World" introductory guide. Readers get substantial exposure to object-oriented design and implementation, serialization, network programming, threads, and Remote Method Invocation (RMI).
Key to the authors' teaching style are carefully designed graphics. Rather than explain class inheritance (to cite one example) primarily with text, the authors use a series of tree diagrams that clarify the mechanism far more succinctly. The diagrams are carefully annotated with arrows and notes. Also characteristic of the unique teaching strategy is heavy reliance on exercises, in which the reader is asked to complete partial classes, write whole new code segments and do design work. Though there's little discussion of why the exercises' correct answers are what they are, it's clear that the practice work was carefully designed to reinforce the lesson at hand. If you've waited this long to give Java a try, this book is a great choice. –David Wall

Leap A Revolution In Creative Business Strategy - John Wiley SonsTraditionally, company leaders develop a business strategy based on bottom lines and profit margins, then hire an ad agency to back up that strategy with creative advertising. But history shows that some of the most effective branding campaigns are born when companies work with ad agencies to develop a business strategy that has a big, creative idea at its heart–what CEO of Euro RSCG Bob Schmetterer calls the Creative Business Idea. In Leap, Bob Schmetterer shows advertisers how to combine advertising creativity and bottom-line realities to develop winning business strategies and winning ad campaigns. He analyzes some of the most creative business ideas in history, showing how successful advertising and marketing strategies do more than simply communicate the brand–they define it. Advertisers know how to create demand for an existing brand, but Schmetterer argues that the next challenge for advertisers is to help their clients apply creative thinking to their core business strategy before they launch a branding blitz. Leap is about connecting the left brain and the right brain to develop solid business strategies that are also creative, fresh, and exciting. Its about mixing businesss cold fixation on numbers with the warm heart of art and creativity to build revolutionary brands. Its about connecting with and listening to the client, understanding the business and the product, tapping into the clients passion for the product, and transmitting that passion to the consumer. Its about what happens when the business makes creativity part of its core strategy–enabling it to move beyond self-imposed boundaries and expand the limits of its reach. With a wealth of examples from Volvo to Purdue, Schmetterer shows ad agencies and managers how to help their clients develop the big, creative idea that will transform their businesses–and perhaps their industries. Its time for companies to make the Leap that synthesizes business and creativity to reap the full rewards of profitable innovation. BOB SCHMETTERER is Chairman and CEO of Euro RSCG Worldwide, a one of the worlds top five global advertising and communications agencies with clients such as Intel, Peugeot, Air France, Orange, Abby National, MCI, Danone Group, Reckitt Benckiser, Volvo, and Yahoo!

Leading The Revolution - Harvard Business School Press Leading the Revolution begins by taking us through what Hamel describes as the End of Progress, whereby the evolution of industrial society is seen to be replaced by the revolution of the new economy. This change is underpinned by the rising expectations of the stakeholder economy: it is not enough to beat your last annual earnings, or be better than your competitor–the revolutionary company will be best of breed by every benchmark, nothing less. Failure to do so will leave you vulnerable to the other revolutionaries.

Hamel then sets about describing the road to becoming a revolutionary in your business and turning your business into a revolution. There are no great surprises here–think illogically, go against the grain, ask the wrong questions, be unreasonable in your expectations, it's a cause not a business, listen to the periphery. But taken together, his account builds into a vivid picture of can-do. The only trouble is that to act on even a fraction of his recommendations would exhaust the mightiest of managers. Perhaps that's why, in a revolution, there is only one leader–the rest of us just follow. –Chris Price (more…)

Turning a Great Idea into a Business RealityA practical process for turning human resources into a crucial component of success — from an HR professional who really did it

    "Foreword by Dave Ulrich

""It is easier to conceptualize, conceive, and write about utopia than to actually make it happen. Thirty years ago, when some of us chose to go into academics and live more in the world of ideas, Ralph Christensen chose to go into the world of practice. To be honest, he was then and is now one of the best ‘thinkers’ in the profession — and he has shown repeatedly that he can turn ideas into action.""

    – Dave Ulrich, from the Foreword

For decades now, human resources professionals have sounded the drumbeat of change: HR must transform itself from an administrative function into a strategic business partner. But it has been said so often, for so long, and with so little concrete, real-life information on how to actually achieve this new mission, that the message often sounds like a wouldn’t-it-be-nice scenario.

But it isn’t. More and more traditional HR activities are being farmed out to service centers, external vendors, and line managers. The work of HR is changing, and more and more professionals realize that to succeed in the future they must be part of the team that makes important business decisions.

Roadmap to Strategic HR is a sorely needed prescription for achieving strategic focus in complex organizations. Drawn from the author’s more than 25 years of experience and insights as an HR practitioner at Hallmark and other companies, the book outlines a 10-step, results-oriented plan for making the transition. It helps you integrate top-quality tactical work with innovative internal systems — talent systems, training systems, reward systems, or work processes — that will meet the strategic business demands of your organization.
