Barack Obama splashed onto the political scene with an inspirational, rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. From that night on, Obamamania was very real. He is bold and audacious; his rhetoric fiery, convincing and very compelling. He encourages cross-over appeal, discourse, affiliation, and has drawn many Americans, including today’s youth, into politics. This is the story of a man of mixed race heritage who inspires, listens, compromises, and is often bipartisan. With a charismatic smile and a cadre of “change we can believe in,” many believe that he embodies the American dream. Thousands have turned out to hear the dynamic senator from Illinois speak as he campaigns to become the next President of the United States. Barack Obama says that his story could only take place in America, and this revealing biography traces the events of his remarkable life thus far. From his upbringing in humble circumstances in Hawaii and Indonesia to becoming the fifth African American senator in U.S. history, and later, a presidential candidate, this well-researched volume highlights the hardships and successes, the people who most influenced his career, his personal life, and his meteoric rise to pop icon status. Rounded out with photos, a timeline, a bibliography, and an index, this volume is a must-read for high school and undergraduate students of current events and political science.

What If… you’re starting an IV and the catheter breaks off in the vein? What If… your attending physician has you on the “hot seat” during morning rounds? What If… a patient has a gun tucked in his waistband? What If… you make a mistake? Every medical student, resident, and practicing physician worries at one time or another about events they can’t foresee — delivering a baby on an airplane, sharing very bad news with a patient, or attending to a friend who has just been struck by lightning. What If… there was a book that anticipated some of these events, provided step-by-step instructions for handling each crisis, and was presented in a simple, clear, and compelling way? What If…? Survival Guide for Physicians provides useful and detailed information — taken seriously, but also approached in a light-hearted manner — on how to handle a variety of crises and unexpected situations. *Uniformly structured, with step-by-step instructions and tips dealing with stressful, dangerous, or unusual occurrences *Addresses questions students may feel too insecure to ask *Sidebars offer key advice about how to more effectively prepare for the unexpected Sample topics include: *Dealing for the first time with a patient who is deaf, blind, violent, or refuses treatment *Handling sexual advances or demands for unnecessary medication *Dealing with tyrannical colleagues *Discovering a “pet” in a patient’s pocket or an insect in the ear canal *Giving a family bad news *Witnessing accidents or other situations requiring medical attention while away from your place of work

Very great player knows that success in poker is part luck, part math, and part subterfuge. While the math of poker has been refined over the past 20 years, the ability to read other players and keep your own “tells” in check has mostly been learned by trial and error.
But now, Joe Navarro, a former FBI counterintelligence officer specializing in nonverbal communication and behavior analysis—or, to put it simply, a man who can tell when someone’s lying—offers foolproof techniques, illustrated with amazing examples from poker pro Phil Hellmuth, that will help you decode and interpret your opponents’ body language and other silent tip-offs while concealing your own. You’ll become a human lie detector, ready to call every bluff—and the most feared player in the room.

Once again, Robert Sedgewick provides a current and comprehensive introduction to important algorithms. The focus this time is on graph algorithms, which are increasingly critical for a wide range of applications, such as network connectivity, circuit design, scheduling, transaction processing, and resource allocation. In this book, Sedgewick offers the same successful blend of theory and practice that has made his work popular with programmers for many years. Michael Schidlowsky and Sedgewick have developed concise new Java implementations that both express the methods in a natural and direct manner and also can be used in real applications.
Algorithms in Java, Third Edition, Part 5: Graph Algorithms is the second book in Sedgewick’s thoroughly revised and rewritten series. The first book, Parts 1-4, addresses fundamental algorithms, data structures, sorting, and searching. A forthcoming third book will focus on strings, geometry, and a range of advanced algorithms. Each book’s expanded coverage features new algorithms and implementations, enhanced descriptions and diagrams, and a wealth of new exercises for polishing skills. The natural match between Java classes and abstract data type (ADT) implementations makes the code more broadly useful and relevant for the modern object-oriented programming environment.

‘Ace on the River’ is no ordinary poker book. This is the first truly “advanced” guide aimed at improving your game. Written in an easy-to-read, bare bones conversational style and designed to help anyone interested in increasing their understanding of the game, this book is ideal for those new to the game or winning professionals. The fundamental philosophies presented go beyond the green felt and can be applied in all competitive ventures. While most poker books focus on basic rules and strategies, the book’s advanced perspective addresses elements that effect both game play and the player. Focusing on a variety of subjects, such as the psychology of poker, money management, family issues, and sex, this book gives the reader a rare chance to look beyond the cards to see the poker world through someone who lives it. The unique you-make-the-call-play by play section will challenge the reader again and again. This is a review and guide to the world of high-stakes poker as seen by one of the most well-known and well-respected players of all time. From the beginning of 2003 until the middle of 2004, Barry Greenstein won seven poker tournaments and came in second five times, including winning a World Poker Tour event and a World Series of Poker bracelet. Known as the Robin Hood of Poker, Barry has donated nearly three million dollars of his tournament winnings to charity.

Originally released in 1988, Sklanksy and Malmuth updated Hold em Poker for Advanced Players in 1999 and called it the 21st century edition. Poker has, and continues to change over the years, and the updated edition reflects some of those changes. The primary changes include updated hand rankings, as well as particular sessions about non-standard (Shorthanded, Wild, extra loose) games. As the rules of poker continue to change, adjusting your play for who you are playing against becomes more and more important, and the sections on these non-standard games are invaluable for the serious card player.
Hold em Poker for Advanced Players covers most, but not all, of the material found in Hold em Poker. What it does cover it covers in much greater detail, and it adds much much more. The book is written fairly chronologically, starting with what hands you should play with and when, and then moves along through different stages of each hand. Then the book looks at specific strategies and cases, other poker concepts, and finally a quiz on the material that you can peruse and test you own knowledge if you feel there are leaks in your game. There are in depth sections on probability and odds, which really is at the core of the Sklanksy game (Mathematics), and sections on reading hands and even a small chapter on the psychology of poker.

Joomla is targeting the novice website designer and programmer. By some definitions, a designer need not be concerned with the messy details of actually making webpages. However, Joomla is easy enough to pick up that a designer might well be tempted to indulge in actual page design and generation.
It does aim at websites where the intent is for users to have a persistent login. To this ends, Joomla offers a separation of functions, for the user and for the administrator [you presumably]. As the book demonstrates, it’s pretty easy for you to create user accounts. The specialisation for content management is shown when there is the concept of groups of users. Joomla offers Registered, Author, Editor and Publisher. With subsidiary groups of Manager, Administrator and Super Admin. The administrative tasks are done within a simple GUI that frees you from memorising arcane command lines.
Joomla also has an interesting functionality. It lets you, the website author or owner, publish Joomla-generated URLs that are search engine friendly. Various search engines tend not to store long URLs, where there are many arguments in these, after the host name. The assumption is that the URLs refer to dynamic [ie. transient] content. Hence there is little point to the engine storing these URLs, or the pages pointed to by them. But you want the engine to store your website’s URLs, right? What Joomla does is rewrite the URLs in a more compact form, which improves the chances of an engine recording these. And thus offering your website in its free results.

These days “rock music” courses are ubiquitous at most universities and colleges, but until recently instructors seeking an anthology of readings on the History of Rock have looked in vain. The Rock History Reader aims to fill that gap. Through a variety of primary source materials, the Rock History Reader introduces students to the conflicts, critical tensions and inspired creativity that have defined rock music as a social practice throughout its five decade history. Featuring nearly sixty chapters, the Reader ranges from the vivid autobiographical accounts of such rock icons as Chuck Berry, Ronnie Spector and David Lee Roth to the writings of noted rock critics like Lester Bangs and Simon Reynolds. Beyond this, readers will find selections from the pens of media critics, musicologists, fanzine writers, legal experts, sociologists and prominent political figures like Tipper Gore. Many entries also deal specifically with distinctive styles such as Motown, punk, disco, grunge, rap and indie pop. With numerousreadings that delve into the often explosive issues surrounding censorship, copyright, race relations, feminism, youth subcultures and the meaning of musical value, the Rock History Reader will appeal to scholars and students from a variety of disciplines.

While Adobe Photoshop has long been their choice for editing digital photographs, many photographers want a more focused tool. That’s where Adobe Photoshop Lightroom comes in. Designed from the ground up with digital photographers in mind, Photoshop Lightroom offers powerful editing features in a streamlined interface that lets photographers import, sort, and organize images. This completely updated and expanded bestseller, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book, was also written with photographers in mind. Author Martin Evening describes features in Photoshop Lightroom 2 in detail from a photographer’s perspective. As an established commercial and fashion photographer, Martin knows first-hand what photographers need for an efficient workflow. He has also been working with Lightroom from the beginning, monitoring the product’s development and providing feedback on the public beta. As a result, Martin knows the software inside and out, from image selection to image editing to image management. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book contains 624 pages of comprehensive and detailed coverage of all aspects of Lightroom. In this book you’ll learn how to:
- Work efficiently with images shot in the raw or JPEG format
- Import photographs with ease and sort them according to your workflow
- Create and manage a personal image library
- Apply tonal adjustments to multiple images quickly
- Integrate Photoshop Lightroom with Adobe Photoshop
- Export images for print or Web as digital contact sheets or personal portfolios.
The book structure has been organized to match a typical Lightroom workflow. The introductory chapter provides an overview of all the main Lightroom features, showing how Lightroom 2 was used on a studio photo shoot that was specially shot to illustrate the book. The following chapters cover all the essentials, such as importing photos, working with the Library module, and managing the catalog database. The biggest section of the book is devoted to working with the Develop module and provides some unique insights into working with new features such as the localized adjustment tools. There is also a whole chapter devoted to image sharpening and another on integrating Lightroom and Photoshop, where you will learn how to devise the best workflow methods for working between these two programs. This is followed by a chapter on printing and a presentation chapter on the Slideshow and Web modules. Lastly, there are two appendix chapters.
One offers a complete overview of the Lightroom 2 preference settings, while the other provides some in-depth explanations and background reading on how the Lightroom program works. The book is richly illustrated, mostly using the author’s own photographs, and one of the nice features of this book is the way enlarged panel views are used throughout, making it easier for readers to follow the settings used in the various step-by-step examples. There are also lots of tips that will help you take your Lightroom techniques to an advanced level. If you are looking for the most comprehensive coverage of Lightroom, written by an author who is closely involved with the development of the program, this is the book to get. About the Author Martin Evening is a London-based advertising and fashion photographer and noted expert in both photography and digital imaging. In addition to being a bestselling author, Martin is sought after for speaking and lecturing. He also works with the Photoshop and Lightroom engineering teams, consulting on new feature development and alpha and beta testing. He is one of the founding members of PixelGenius, a software design company producing automated production and creative plug-ins for Photoshop.

The unexpected pleasure of reading books about databases is that they are often written by authors with highly organized minds. Paul DuBois and his editors at New Riders have assembled MySQL with a clarity and lucidity that inspires confidence in the subject matter: a (nearly) freely redistributable SQL-interpreting database client/server primarily geared for Unix systems but maintained for Windows platforms as well.
What isn’t “free” about MySQL (the application) is its server’s commercial use; all clients and noncommercial server use are free. DuBois’s tome isn’t free either, but its list price is modest in light of its value and the value of its namesake.
The volume is superbly organized into 12 chapters and 10 appendices and contains a concise table of contents and a comprehensive 50-page index. It is peppered with references to the online HTML documentation that comes with the source and binary distributions (which are available and easy to install in stable rpm and tar releases.)
The first third of MySQL is an excellent instruction tool for database newbies; the second third is a detailed reference for MySQL developers; and the last third consists of clearly annotated appendices, including C, Perl (but not Python), and PHP interfaces.
Perhaps as an indication of the collective will of the developers of MySQL, DuBois does not separate Windows 95/98/NT design or development specifics from its main discussions. Platform-independent design is a goal, not a reality, and users will have to rely on newsgroups and mailing lists for details. Moreover, security issues are addressed in a mere 18 pages, a large part of which is devoted to standard Unix file and network-access permissions. Next to nothing is mentioned about defense against common hacking strategies, the use of secure shell interfaces, or access encryption.
Although it is nearly 800 pages in length, DuBois’s book is thankfully not encyclopedic. It is a valuable précis of the MySQL database, and its easy-to-skim look and feel will make it an excellent browse for database experts who want to know what is and is not possible within MySQL, the application. –Peter Leopold –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Most scientists and engineers received some training in computer programming in their college days, but they (or their computer) may no longer have the capability to write or run programs in, for example, FORTRAN. This book shows how to implement numerical methods using Microsoft Excel, the most widely used spreadsheet software package.
This is a book about numerical methods. I have emphasized the methods and have kept the mathematical theory behind the methods to a minimum. In many cases, formulas are introduced with little or no description of the underlying theory. (I assume that the reader will be familiar with linear interpolation, simple calculus, regression, etc.) Other topics, such as cubic interpolation, methods for solving differential equations, and so on, are covered in more detail, and a few topics, such as Bairstow’s method for obtaining the roots of a regular polynomial, are discussed in detail.
In this book I have provided a wide range of Excel solutions to problems. In many cases I provide a series of examples that progress from a very simple implementation of the problem (useful for understanding the logic and construction of the spreadsheet or VBA code) to a more sophisticated one that is more general. Some of the VBA macros are simple “starting points” and I encourage the reader to modify them; others are (or at least I intended them to be) “finished products” that I hope users can employ on a regular basis.
Nearly 100% of the material in this book applies equally to the PC or Macintosh versions of Excel. In a few cases I have pointed out the different keystrokes requires for the Macintosh version.

With technical insights direct from the Windows Server team, this practical introduction delivers real-world implementation scenarios and pragmatic advice for administering Windows Server in the enterprise.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of Windows Server 2008 at the Beta 3 milestone. Because Beta 3 is a pre-release version of the platform, some features will likely change before release to manufacturing (RTM) occurs. So the descriptions of these features in this book might not be completely accurate. However, please be assured that the author, working together with the Windows Server 2008 product team at Microsoft, has tried very hard to ensure that the information presented in this book will still be as accurate as possible even after RTM.
The target audience for this book is IT professionals who plan on deploying Windows Server 2008 in enterprise environments, and who might therefore be testing pre-release versions of Windows Server 2008 prior to rolling it out on their production networks. The book will be distributed widely at TechEd 2007 and other Microsoft events, but it will also be available through the usual commercial channels (bookstores) for IT pros who can’t make these events and who therefore might want to purchase it.
