When I first discovered CodeIgniter, I was overcome with glee after following the video tutorials. It all worked. There was no need to rely on any command-line interaction to “automagically” build my application for me. There was no dependence on PEAR or any other outside resources. There was just CodeIgniter. And it worked.

As soon as I got a grasp on what it was doing and why, I dove into the excellent User Guide and began to feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This felt like home. The user guide is written in such a non-intimidating manner that it invites even the most timid of PHP developers. To this day, I still refer to the user guide when I forget specific syntax or function names and it’s a guick in-and-out routine. Nothing at all complex about it.

Not too long ago I came across a book by Packt Publishing called ‘CodeIgniter for Rapid PHP Application Development’. At first, I thought to myself, “Why?”. The combination of the user guide, the forum and CodeIgniter’s well structured code is surely enough for anybody to learn, right? What could this book have that any potential developer could not obtain through these natural resources?

Throughout the fifteen chapters in the book, the author walks you through building a functional application from start to finish (well, at least as finished as any web application truly is). At first I thought the choice of the application to build was rather odd, but as I continued reading the book, I realized it was a good example because of the wide array of helpers, libraries and other standard CodeIgniter components and logic the application uses. Specifically, the example application provides a way to monitor several different aspects of remote websites by performing tests and generating reports. The author does a great job of walking the reader through the process step by step while explaining why and how the various CodeIgniter components are being used.

However, I did find the odd spelling error here and there and I don’t necessarily agree with outputting HTML from a model, but overall this book is a great addition to the natural resources that the user guide and forum provide. This book will be of no help to the (albeit few) people that immediately jump into the forums asking “how do I…” without taking a little time to read through the user guide and searching pre-existent forum threads to find a solution for their problem, but for those who truly want to learn more about the framework and want to have a good book on hand, then this book certainly does the trick.

Flex 3 is the next generation of a technology that revolutionized web applications. It is the next evolutionary step of Flash, which has grown from a web animation medium to a powerful enterprise web design and development platform. With nearly 98% of all web browsers, and a growing number of mobile devices, running Flash Player, a knowledge of Flex is indispensible for any serious web developer.

This book will show you how to create powerful Rich Internet Applications using Flex 3. After learning how to install and becoming familiar with the basics of the Flex Builder 3 software, you will explore in depth how the Flash scripting language, ActionScript 3.0, interacts with Flex’s powerful XML-like design language: MXML.

You’ll learn how to construct your applications using layout and navigation containers, and how to move between various states using transitions. There is coverage of how best to plan your applications and use the Model-View-Controller pattern to keep various aspects of development separated and ease creation of potentially complicated projects.

Rich Internet Applications rely on data, and this book shows how to bring data from various sources into your Flex application and check its integrity, and how best to display and interact with it.

Going farther, applications built for the Flash platform can now exist and function beyond the traditional confines of the web browser. Adobe AIR allows you to take your applications to the desktop, and this book shows how to reapply your Flex skills to take advantage of this new environment.

The Essential Guide to Flex 3 takes you through all the powerful features of Flex using a series of stand-alone, practical exercises. The skills acquired throughout the book are then brought together in the form of a full-featured case study application showcasing essential techniques that can easily be applied to your own Flex applications.

The CCNA exam is all about internetworking, with emphasis on the role routers play in sending packets back and forth among networks. Since the CCNA Exam Certification Guide is published by Cisco Press, it holds to the exam’s focus. After a discussion of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model and the mechanics of how each layer operates in an internetworking environment, the author talks about Cisco’s Internetworking Operating System (IOS) and how it does its job, presenting information about setting up, configuring, and managing IOS along the way. Author Wendell Odom goes on to discuss networking protocols (especially TCP/IP) and the telecommunications technologies for connecting the nodes of a wide area network (WAN).

The book presents the CCNA material in sections. This approach allows you to work through Cisco’s stated objectives for the exam one at a time, consecutively, or by only shoring up on weak spots. A quiz program on the companion CD-ROM offers extra drilling in problem areas.

Programmers love its flexibility and speed; designers love its accessibility and convenience. When it comes to creating web sites, the PHP scripting language is truly a red-hot property. In fact, PHP is currently used on more than 19 million web sites, surpassing Microsoft’s ASP .NET technology in popularity. Not surprisingly, this surge in usage has resulted in a number of PHP books hitting the market. Only one, though, takes the language beyond traditional Web programming and into mapping, graphing, multimedia, and beyond: “PHP Hacks,”

In “PHP Hacks,” author Jack Herrington wrings out his 20 years of code generation experience to deliver hands-on tools ranging from basic PHP and PEAR installation and scripting to advanced multimedia and database optimizing tricks.

On the practical side of things, “PHP Hacks” helps you develop more robust PHP applications by explaining how to improve your database design, automate application testing, and employ design patterns in your PHP scripts and classes. In the category of “cool,” Herrington explains how to upgrade your Web interface through the creation of tabs, stickies, popups, and calendars. He even examines how to leverage maps and graphics in PHP. There’s also a bounty of image and application hacks, including those that show you how to:

Integrate web sites with Google maps and satellite imaging

Dynamically display iPhoto libraries online

Add IRC, SMS, and Instant Messaging capabilities to your Web applications

Drop the latest Wikipedia dictionary onto your Sony PSP

Render graphics and user interfaces with SVG, DHTML, and Ajax

Whether you’re a newcomer or an expert, you’ll find great value in “PHPHacks,” the only PHP guide that offers something useful and fun for everyone.

Over the past three years PHP has evolved from being a niche language used to add dynamic functionality to small sites to a powerful tool making strong inroads into large-scale, business-critical Web systems.

The rapid maturation of PHP has created a skeptical population of users from more traditional “enterprise” languages who question the readiness and ability of PHP to scale, as well as a large population of PHP developers without formal computer science backgrounds who have learned through the hands-on experimentation while developing small and midsize applications in PHP.

While there are many books on learning PHP and developing small applications with it, there is a serious lack of information on “scaling” PHP for large-scale, business-critical systems. Schlossnagle’s Advanced PHP Programming fills that void, demonstrating that PHP is ready for enterprise Web applications by showing the reader how to develop PHP-based applications for maximum performance, stability, and extensibility.

If you’re using PHP 4, then chances are good that an upgrade to PHP 5 is in your future. The more you’ve heard about the exciting new features in PHP 5, the sooner that upgrade is probably going to be. Although an in-depth, soup-to-nuts reference guide to the language is good to have on hand, it’s not the book an experienced PHP programmer needs to get started with the latest release. What you need is a lean and focused guide that answers your most pressing questions: what’s new with the technology, what’s different, and how do I make the best use of it? In other words, you need a copy of Upgrading to PHP 5. This book is targeted toward PHP developers who are already familiar with PHP 4. Rather than serve as a definitive guide to the entire language, the book zeroes in on PHP 5’s new features, and covers these features definitively. You’ll find a concise appraisal of the differences between PHP 4 and PHP 5, a detailed look at what’s new in this latest version, and you’ll see how PHP 5 improves on PHP 4 code. See PHP 4 and PHP 5 code side-by-side, to learn how the new features make it easier to solve common PHP problems. Each new feature is shown in code, helping you understand why it’s there, when to use it, and how it’s better than PHP 4. Short, sample programs are included throughout the book. Topics covered in Upgrading to PHP 5 include:

Oh, and forward compatibility. Now optimization is definitely more Greg’s kind of thing than mine, and Marcus doesn’t have much spare time these days, so I took it on myself to focus on that other thing. I went to look at PHP 6. The good news is that from now, all phars created using PHP 5.2.1 and up should run under PHP 6 and vice versa. The structure’s unchanged. Sing hallelujah.
The bad news is that a phar with a default stub won’t run under versions of PHP prior to PHP 5.2.1, whereas we had PHP 5.1 support this time last week. Blame: b and the binary cast. The default stub calls unpack(), you see, and PHP 6 needs to be told that the second argument to unpack() is a binary string and not a Unicode string. The only ways we have of telling PHP 6 this will throw a parse error in PHP 5.2.0 and under. There’s no way to have both backward compatibility and forward compatibility: we have to choose….

We crafted this book to grow with you, providing the reference material you need as you move toward Office proficiency and use of more advanced features. If you buy only one book on Office 2007, Special Edition Using Microsoft® Office 2007 is the only book you need.

If you own a copy of Office 2007, you deserve a copy of this book! Although this book is aimed at the Office veteran, Ed and Woody’s engaging style will appeal to beginners, too. Written in clear, plain English, readers will feel as though they are learning from real humans and not Microsoft clones. Sprinkled with a wry sense of humor and an amazing depth of field, this book most certainly isn’t your run-of-the-mill computer book. You should expect plenty of hands-on guidance and deep but accessible reference material.

This isn’t your Dad’s Office! For the first time in a decade, Microsoft has rolled out an all-new user interface. Menus? Gone. Toolbars? Gone. For the core programs in the Office family, you now interact with the program using the Ribbon–an oversize strip of icons and commands, organized into multiple tabs, that takes over the top of each program’s interface. If your muscles have memorized Office menus, you’ll have to unlearn a lot of old habits for this version.

A self-respecting Google hacker spends hours trolling the Internet for juicy stuff. Firing off search after search, they thrive on the thrill of finding clean, mean, streamlined queries and get a real rush from sharing those queries and trading screenshots of their findings. I know because I’ve seen it with my own eyes. As the founder of the Google Hacking Database (GHDB) and the Search engine hacking forums at http://johnny.ihackstuff.com, I am constantly amazed at what the Google hacking community comes up with. It turns out the rumors are true-creative Google searches can reveal medical, financial, proprietary and even classified information. Despite government edicts, regulation and protection acts like HIPPA and the constant barking of security watchdogs, this problem still persists. Stuff still makes it out onto the web, and Google hackers snatch it right up. Protect yourself from Google hackers with this new volume of information.

In the last few years, security has become a hot-button issue for IT organizations of all sizes. Accordingly, many of the security features that were either optional or suspect in Windows 2000 have become solid, effective fixtures in Windows Server 2003-making it the most secure operating system Microsoft has ever produced. That is, if you know how to configure it properly.

The Windows Server 2003 Security Cookbook wants to make sure that you do know how. Picking up right where its predecessor, the Windows Server Cookbook, left off, this desktop companion is focused solely on Windows Server security. It teaches you how to perform important security tasks in the Windows Server 2003 OS using specific and adaptable recipes. Each recipe features a brief description of the problem, a step-by-step solution, and then a discussion of the technology at work. Whenever possible, the authors even tell you where to look for further information on a recipe.

The book is written in a highly modular format, with each chapter devoted to one or more technologies that Windows Server 2003 provides. This approach allows you to look up a task or scenario that you want to accomplish, find that page, and read that particular recipe only. Topics include:
System preparation and administration
Protecting the computer at the TCP/IP level
Applying security options to Active Directory
Improving security on domain controllers
Securing DHCP controllers
Encrypting and signing network traffic using IPSec
Patch management

If you’re an intermediate or advanced system administrator who wants to feel secure when deploying Windows Server 2003 and its related services, then you don’t want to be without the Windows Server 2003 Security Cookbook.

While computers and other devices identify each other on networks or the Internet by using unique addresses made up of numbers, humans rely on the Domain Name System (DNS), the distributed database that allows us to identify machines by name. DNS does the work of translating domain names into numerical IP addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services, so that users require little or no knowledge of the system. If you’re a network or system administrator, however, configuring, implementing, and maintaining DNS zones can be a formidable challenge. And now, with Windows Server 2003, an understanding of the workings of DNS is even more critical.

DNS on Windows Server 20003 is a special Windows-oriented edition of the classic DNS and BIND, newly updated to document the many changes to DNS, large and small, found in Windows Server 2003. Veteran O’Reilly authors, Cricket Liu, Matt Larson, and Robbie Allen explain the whole system in terms of the new Windows Server 2003, from starting and stopping a DNS service to establishing an organization’s namespace in the global hierarchy.

Besides covering general issues like installing, setting up, and maintaining the server, DNS on Windows Server 2003 tackles the many issues specific to the new Windows environment, including the use of the dnscmd program to manage the Microsoft DNS Server from the command line and development using the WMI DNS provider to manage the name server programmatically. The book also documents new features of the Microsoft DNS Server in Windows Server 2003, including conditional forwarding and zone storage in Active Directory (AD) application partitions.

DNS on Windows Server 2003 provides grounding in:

* Security issues
* System tuning
* Caching
* Zone change notification
* Troubleshooting
* Planning for growth

If you’re a Windows administrator, DNS on Windows Server 2003 is the operations manual you need for working with DNS every day. If you’re a Windows user who simply wants to take the mystery out of the Internet, this book is a readable introduction to the Internet’s architecture and inner workings.

The Definitive Guide to Apache MyFaces and Facelets is an ideal reference if youre looking to develop real–world applications with the open source lightweight Apache MyFaces and Dojo (the Ajax API). The book focuses less on theory and more on aspects like scalability, design, optimization, and configurability.

This book emphasizes meeting real–world requirements for performance and scalability. It includes lucid code samples that reflect the pattern being described. The “In the Trenches” sections in each chapter give you advice and recommendations based on actual experiences with each pattern. What’s more, the “Extreme Extensions” section at the end of each relevant chapter is dedicated to a “freestyle” expression of taking a particular pattern or set of patterns to the max. (This is a great way for you to learn because of the magnification effect.) This is also the first book to embrace the Dojo framework for Ajax (soon to be an Apache project).

Accelerated Silverlight 2 will get you up to speed with the latest version of Silverlight quickly and efficiently. Author Jeff Scanlon assumes you’re already comfortable with the basics of .NET coding and with WPF, and they help you build on your existing knowledge to make your journey to Silverlight 2 proficiency as quick and painless as possible. Where coding techniques are similar to other, more established, areas of .NET, they’ll say so. Likewise, where there’s a syntax or conceptual “gotcha” that you’re existing coding habits will walk you into, they’ll point that out, too.

You’ll find fast–track coverage of all the most important elements of the Silverlight 2 technology ranging from XAML to standard controls, from dealing with media to networking, from testing to deployment. Two fully worked sample applications conclude your path to Silverlight 2 mastery because nothing reinforces your understanding of how concepts fit together as much as looking at finished code.

The book is based on the assumption that readers will already be very comfortable with the workings of the .NET Framework. Knowledge of Expression Blend is useful, but the authors don’t assume that you’re a master of it. You’ll learn the Blend techniques that you need to know as you go along. By the end of the book, the authors will have provided you with a sound, concise, path to mastery of Silverlight 2.

WPF offers amazing new opportunities to .NET programmers in terms of the user interfaces they can deliver to their customers. But this significant technological advance comes with a steep learning curve, requiring the programmer to learn new classes, new syntax, and an entirely new approach to UI development.

Although WPF has been generally available for over a year, commercial take–up has been relatively slow, and the publicly available body of knowledge has been weak in terms of real–world examples and best–practice information.

Using WPF Recipes in C# 2008, you’ll find a simple and straightforward approach to solving the problems you face every day. Each solution contains a complete, working example that demonstrates how to make the best use of WPF. You can use the example as a template to solve your own problem or as a base on which to build a solution tailored to your specific needs.

Packed with well–structured and documented solutions to a broad range of common WPF problems, this book, which presents the only WPF recipes currently published, will be a valuable addition to any C# programmer’s reference library. Examples included provide you with a rich source of information as you begin to learn and will be an invaluable quick–reference guide once you’re a proficient WPF programmer.

The emphasis on solving the day–to–day WPF problems that all programmers face frees you from needing to trawl through weighty programming tomes or sift through API documentation, allowing you to focus on the more interesting and innovative aspects of your project.

This book is for anyone who wants to write good C# code—even if you have never programmed before. Writing good code can be a challenge—there are so many options, especially in a .NET language like C#. If you want to really get the best from a programming language, you need to know which features work best in which situations and understand their strengths and weaknesses. It is this understanding that makes the difference between coding and coding well.

Beginning C# 2008: From Novice to Professional, Second Edition has been written to teach you how to use the C# programming language to solve problems. From the earliest chapters, and from the first introductory concepts, you’ll be looking at real–world programming challenges and learning how C# can be used to overcome them. As you progress through the book, the problems become more involved and interesting, while the solutions become correspondingly more complex and powerful as C# features interact to achieve the results that you want.

This second edition has been revised and improved to now include the latest SQL Server 2008 release and explain how you can integrate SQL Server 2008 with your C# applications.

By the time you’ve finished reading this book and worked through the sample exercises, you’ll be a confident and very competent C# programmer. You will still have many explorations of the .NET Framework API to look forward to, but you will have a firm foundation to build from, and you will know exactly where to go to find the things that you need to progress confidently in your projects.

GDI+ both wraps arcane API calls and extends them for much easier use. Programmers no longer have to make do with the familiar but simplistic VB 6.0 drawing model, nor do they have to dig down into the GDI API in order to get any real work done. In GDI+, Microsoft has come up with a complete, but still extensible, set of classes for all of the .NET programmer’s drawing needs.

GDI+ requires different techniques than the Windows GDI API, as it is completely stateless. GDI+ Programming in C# and VB .NET starts out with an explanation of GDI+ and how it relates to GDI. The book then dives deep into the GDI+ namespaces and classes. The book begins with basic drawing in the early chapters and then explains in an understandable manner more complex drawing techniques, including paths, gradients, alpha blends, matrix operations, and transformations.

Later chapters cover how to work with bitmaps and other images, as well as advanced drawing and printing techniques. The final two chapters are devoted to useful projects that show the subject matter of the previous chapters in real-world examples.

Throughout GDI+ Programming in C# and VB .NET, author Nick Symmonds not only explains the different namespaces and classes relating to GDI+, but also takes the time to cover the best practices of graphics programming. Woven throughout the book are numerous examples that tie together different aspects of programming in .NET that teach programmers how to get the best possible speed and efficiency out of their code.

A solid read with a lot of wit and humor gained from the wars. If you’ve been floundering along and not enjoying the ride very much, take a step back and read The Career Programmer to figure out what you can do differently…

— Tom Duff, Duffbert’s Random Musings

This book is about improving every aspect of your programming job except the coding itself (actually, it might do that too).

— Jim Anderton, “Wtih a T!”

Unrealistic schedules, unstable releases, continual overtime, and skyrocketing stress levels are legendary in the software development industry. Unlike traditional occupations such as accounting or administration, the software business is populated with programmers who are as creative and passionate about their work as musicians and artists. But for most programmers and project managers, it is a complete surprise when they enter the business world and find that internal politics, inept management, and unrealistic marketing drive the process, rather than a structured and orderly approach based on technical issues and quality.

This guide, delivered with the wit and aplomb to make a serious topic entertaining and palatable, will help you survive the programming industry in 2006. The Career Programmer explains how you can work within the existing system to solve deadline problems and regain control of the development process. Youll master self-defense techniques to shield yourself, your project, and your code from corporate politics, arbitrary management decisions, and marketing-driven deadlines. Author Chris Duncan provides proven, practical, hands-on solutions designed to work even when tested by the political and chaotic realities of the business environment. Issues are addressed from the points of view of both the programmer and project manager, and steps are illustrated from all perspectivesfrom large-scale teams down to projects with a single developer. For you, the end results will mean less overtime and stress, higher-quality software, and a more satisfying career.

Developing .NET Enterprise Applications is a complete guide to building a scalable enterprise application using .NET technologies. Other available books deeply describe individual Framework components, such as database, Windows Forms, or WebForms, but none tie all the technologies into a single scalable application.

When you start from short teaching an application to putting together such pieces as interaction with multi-tiers, varying back end databases, and legacy, the problems and techniques that are needed grow exponentially. The transition from learning a language to building an enterprise application is where the need for “guidebooks” is the greatest, and Developing .NET Enterprise Applications is designed to make the transition easier.

The technical book market today is flooded with a slew of titles on how to build applications with the .NET technology, and many are undoubtedly very good. But the majority of these titles simply take a “how-to” approach on programming with the .NET Framework. They often pay little more than cursory attention to the real-world issues and challenges that developers face. Performance is one of those challenges.

This book is for intermediate to advanced .NET developers who need answers to the hard questions on how to build high-performance ASP.NET applications. Authors Jeffrey Hasan and Kenneth Tu focus on how to make good design decisions for performance. They discuss how to develop applications with performance in mind. And they pay special attention to the tools available to developers to quantify and monitor performance issues and to diagnose performance problems more quickly.

Infused with the authors’ collective experiences, gathered from years of building high-performance web applications, this is a book that developers will want to keep on the shelf for a long time.

This is the book that you want to read if you have knocked around VB 6 for a couple of years and you’ve decided to move up to .NET. … For the target audience, technical books don’t get much better than this.

— Dan Mabbutt, Visual Basic Guide on About.com

In Programming VB .NET: A Guide for Experienced Programmers, authors Gary Cornell and Jonathan Morrison carefully explain the exciting new features of Visual Basic .NET. Since VB .NET is, for all practical purposes, a whole new language even for the most experienced Visual Basic programmers, developers need to think differently about many familiar topics. Cornell and Morrison are there to help you with careful discussions of each topic.

All experienced programmers wishing to take advantage of the amazing new powers of VB .NET will benefit from this book’s careful treatment of fundamental topics, including inheritance, interfaces, and exception handling, as well as all the powerful new features, such as stream-based I/O and true multithreading.

Cornell and Morrison write from the point of view of the experienced programmer, with constant references to the changes from earlier versions of VB. Developers learn how to use VB .NET for database programming through ADO.NET and web programming through ASP.NET. After reading Programming VB .NET: A Guide for Experienced Programmers, developers will have a firm grasp of the exciting new VB .NET language and its uses in creating powerful .NET applications.

An experienced administrator could use this to make sure nothing has been forgotten, and a new administrator would do well to use this as a roadmap.

— Tom Duff, Duffbert’s Random Musings

System administrators know the Internet is a hostile environment. They can’t tell when a hacker will attempt to gain access to the SQL server, but they can bet that there will be an attempt soon. Because the operating system is vital to a computer’s functioning, and because it’s the only layer between the machine’s available resources and its users, it’s critical that the operating system resist compromise.

Hardening Windows is an intermediate to advanced guide to implementing preventative security measures for the Windows operating system, and it’s the only book that covers NT, 2000, XP, and 2003. This book is designed to provide a quick and easy checklist-style reference to the steps system administrators need to take to anticipate attacks and compromises, and to harden Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 against them.

BACK IN 1999, the ACM published a study1 that presented a comparison of 40 independent implementations of a computationally intensive problem, created by different programmers in either Java&emdash;the then-current managed runtime environment&emdash;or C/C++. It concluded with the finding that interpersonal differences between the developers “are much larger than the average difference between Java and C/C++” and that “performance ratios of a factor of 30 or more are not uncommon between the median programs from the upper half versus the lower half.”

This should teach you something: If you are not a guru-level C++ programmer, then the chance is quite high that a managed code implementation performs as well as the average C++ solution&emdash;especially given the fact that most .NET languages simply allow you fewer possibilities to introduce subtle memory related or performance-related issues. And keep in mind that this study was conducted several years ago, and that Just-In-Time Compilation (JIT) as well as memory management and garbage collection (GC) technologies have been improved in the meantime!

This however doesn’t mean that you can’t create horribly slow, memory-eating applications with .NET. That’s why you should be really concerned about the other part of the study’s conclusion, namely that “interpersonal differences . . . are much larger.” In essence, this means that you have to know about how to optimize your applications so that they run with the expected performance in a managed environment. Even though .NET frees you from a lot of tasks that in C++ would have been your responsibility as a developer, these tasks still exist; these “little puppets” have only cleared the main stage and now live in some little corner behind the scenes.

If you want your application to run in the top performance range, you will still need to find the right strings to pull to move these hidden figures and to basically keep them out of the way of negatively affecting your application’s performance. (Lutz Prechtelt, “Comparing Java vs. C/C++ Efficiency Differences to Interpersonal Differences,” Communications of the ACM 42, no. 10 [October 1999]: 109–112.)

But knowing about the common language runtime’s internals is still not enough, as lots of performance issues actually turn up during application design and not just during the coding stage. Collections, remoting, interoperability with unmanaged code, and COM components are not the only things that come to my mind in this regard.

It is the aim of Nick’s book to enable you to understand the design issues as well as the underlying CLR mechanisms in order to create the programs that run on the better side of the 30-times performance difference quoted in the ACM study. Nick really managed to create a book that addresses these issues, which will otherwise turn up when carelessly coding to a managed environment.

This book will allow you to get into the details without being overwhelmed by the underlying complexity of the common language runtime. The only thing you have to resist after reading the book is the urge to over optimize your code. I was delighted to see that Nick begins with a discussion of identifying an application’s performance-critical sections and only later turns towards isolating and resolving these real performance bottlenecks. This is, in my opinion, one of the most important tasks&emdash;and also one of the most complex ones&emdash;when working with large-scale applications.

And now read on and enjoy the ride to the better side of a 30-fold performance difference.
Ingo Rammer, author of Advanced .

As the title of this book implies, you should read this book if you want to expand your knowledge about developing solutions for both Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. A few sections only apply to MOSS 2007, but those have been clearly identified. Since the beta release of MOSS 2007, we have been working non-stop with this product and found that almost every SharePoint developer shares a common interest in at least four topics: Windows Workflow Foundation, Business Intelligence, InfoPath, and developing Ajax-enabled web parts. We fondly refer to these topics as the Big Four. We expect that in the near future, every SharePoint developer needs to have a good working knowledge about applying these technologies in a SharePoint context and it should come as no surprise that this book dedicates a considerable part to the discussion of the Big Four. We have made sure to include many other current technologies and discuss how to apply them in a SharePoint context. Please make sure to check the table of contents for details, but topics include the ins and outs of building web parts, Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for WSS, enhancing web part development using the Guidance Automation Toolkit, the newly added support for SharePoint in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.0, working with Forms Services 2007, and the BizTalk WSS adapter. Other topics include the building of a Domain-Specific Language for connectable web parts, learning how to reuse presentation layers via Web Services for Remote Portlets, a discussion of available impersonation techniques, and a thorough discussion of SQL Full-Text extensions. We are glad you are interested in this book and are convinced that you will find good value in it. Enjoy the read!

We know from the success of titles such as Web Standards Solutions , Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation, and the Web Designer’s Reference that web designers are increasingly concerned with making sites that don’t just look pretty, but are also built using current best practices. There are three main technologies married together to create usable, standards-compliant web designs: XHTML for data structure, Cascading Style Sheets for styling your data, and JavaScript for adding dynamic effects and manipulating structure on the fly using the Document Object Model. This book is about the latter of the three. DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model gives you everything you need to start using JavaScript and the Document Object Model to enhance your web pages with client-side dynamic effects. Jermey starts off by giving you a basic crash course in JavaScript and the DOM, then move on to provide you with several real world examples built up from scratch including dynamic image galleries and dynamic menus, and show you how to manipulate web page style using the CSS DOM, and create markup on the fly.

The Essential Guide to CSS and HTML Web Design is a special book—it will tell you all you need to know to design great web sites that are standards compliant, usable, and look great, but not overwhelm you with waffle, theory, and obscure details. It is designed to be invaluable to you, whatever stage you are at in your career, with a mixture of practical tutorials and reference material—beginners will quickly pick up the basics, while more experienced web designers and developers will keep returning to the book again and again to recap on techniques they maybe haven’t used for a while, or look up properties, attributes and other details. It is destined to become a close friend, adopting a permanent place on your desk. It starts off by giving a brief introduction to the internet, and the broad area of web design, before diving straight in to HTML and CSS basics, reusing code, other best practices. It then focuses on all the most important areas of a successful web site—typography, images, navigation, tables, layouts, forms and feedback (including ready made PHP scripts for you to use,) and browser quirks, hacks and bugs. The book is completely up-to-date, covering support of the newest standards in all the latest browsers, including IE 7 and Firefox 2. The last chapter of the book provides several case studies for you to dissect and learn from, including all the most popular web site archetypes—a blog, a store front, a corporate home page, and an online gallery. Then the book is rounded off with several detailed reference appendices covering CSS, HTML, Color references, entities, and more, meaning that any details you need to look up are close at hand.

When most people think of word processing, they think of Microsoft Word. After all, it has been around for more than 20 years-practically an eternity in computer time. But Word has also provided its users-nearly everyone on the face of the planet-with an endless supply of annoyances. That is, until now. Word Annoyances offers to the point (and often opinionated) solutions to your most vexing editing, formatting, printing, faxing, and scanning problems. It covers everything from installation and templates to tables, columns, and graphics. For example, learn how to stop Word from searching the Web for help, and how to enter the same text easily in multiple parts of a document-and keep it updated automatically. It also provides a gentle introduction to the power of macros so you can slay your annoyances by the truckload. The fixes will work with most versions of Word, including Word 2000, Word 2002 (also known as Word XP), and Word 2003. Among the topics covered:
Deal with installation issues, crashes, and slowdowns, and dispose of the Office Assistant-either temporarily or forever.
Master templates, numbering, graphics, hyperlinks, tabs, tables, headers, and other everyday annoyances.
Tame some of Word’s wiliest features, such as Smart Cut and Paste, Click and Type, Mail Merge, AutoCorrect, and AutoText.
Printing, Faxing, and Scanning-need we say more?
Learn to output and distribute your documents with confidence.
Need to work with other Microsoft applications or Macs? You’ll find annoyances dealing with Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, as well as a whole chapter just on Mac Word.

“It’s imperative that everybody working in the field of cyber-security read this book to understand the growing threat of rootkits.” –Mark Russinovich, editor, Windows IT Pro / Windows & .NET Magazine “This material is not only up-to-date, it defines up-to-date. It is truly cutting-edge. As the only book on the subject, Rootkits will be of interest to any Windows security researcher or security programmer. It’s detailed, well researched and the technical information is excellent. The level of technical detail, research, and time invested in developing relevant examples is impressive. In one word: Outstanding.” –Tony Bautts, Security Consultant; CEO, Xtivix, Inc. “This book is an essential read for anyone responsible for Windows security. Security professionals, Windows system administrators, and programmers in general will want to understand the techniques used by rootkit authors. At a time when many IT and security professionals are still worrying about the latest e-mail virus or how to get all of this month’s security patches installed, Mr. Hoglund and Mr. Butler open your eyes to some of the most stealthy and significant threats to the Windows operating system.Only by understanding these offensive techniques can you properly defend the networks and systems for which you are responsible.” –Jennifer Kolde, Security Consultant, Author, and Instructor “What’s worse than being owned? Not knowing it. Find out what it means to be owned by reading Hoglund and Butler’s first-of-a-kind book on rootkits. At the apex the malicious hacker toolset–which includes decompilers, disassemblers, fault-injection engines, kernel debuggers, payload collections, coverage tools, and flow analysis tools–is the rootkit. Beginning where Exploiting Software left off, this book shows how attackers hide in plain sight. “Rootkits are extremely powerful and are the next wave of attack technology. Like other types of malicious code, rootkits thrive on stealthiness. They hide away from standard system observers, employing hooks, trampolines, and patches to get their work done. Sophisticated rootkits run in such a way that other programs that usually monitor machine behavior can’t easily detect them. A rootkit thus provides insider access only to people who know that it is running and available to accept commands.Kernel rootkits can hide files and running processes to provide a backdoor into the target machine. “Understanding the ultimate attacker’s tool provides an important motivator for those of us trying to defend systems. No authors are better suited to give you a detailed hands-on understanding of rootkits than Hoglund and Butler. Better to own this book than to be owned.” –Gary McGraw, Ph.D., CTO, Cigital, coauthor of Exploiting Software (2004) and Building Secure Software (2002), both from Addison-Wesley “Greg and Jamie are unquestionably the go-to experts when it comes to subverting the Windows API and creating rootkits. These two masters come together to pierce the veil of mystery surrounding rootkits, bringing this information out of the shadows. Anyone even remotely interested in security for Windows systems, including forensic analysis, should include this book very high on their must-read list.” –Harlan Carvey, author of Windows Forensics and Incident Recovery (Addison-Wesley, 2005) Rootkits are the ultimate backdoor, giving hackers ongoing and virtually undetectable access to the systems they exploit. Now, two of the world’s leading experts have written the first comprehensive guide to rootkits: what they are, how they work, how to build them, and how to detect them. Rootkit.com’s Greg Hoglund and James Butler created and teach Black Hat’s legendary course in rootkits. In this book, they reveal never-before-told offensive aspects of rootkit technology–learn how attackers can get in and stay in for years, without detection. Hoglund and Butler show exactly how to subvert the Windows XP and Windows 2000 kernels, teaching concepts that are easily applied to virtually any modern operating system, from Windows Server 2003 to Linux and UNIX. Using extensive downloadable examples, they teach rootkit programming techniques that can be used for a wide range of software, from white hat security tools to operating system drivers and debuggers. After reading this book, readers will be able to *Understand the role of rootkits in remote command/control and software eavesdropping *Build kernel rootkits that can make processes, files, and directories invisible *Master key rootkit programming techniques, including hooking, runtime patching, and directly manipulating kernel objects *Work with layered drivers to implement keyboard sniffers and file filters *Detect rootkits and build host-based intrusion prevention software that resists rootkit attacks Visit rootkit. com for code and programs from this book. The site also contains enhancements to the book’s text, such as up-to-the-minute information on rootkits available nowhere else.

The Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT) is a new class library for creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs) in Java. Created as part of the Eclipse project, SWT allows developers to build efficient, portable applications that directly access the user-interface facilities of the operating systems it is implemented on. This revolutionary technology makes it possible to create Java-based applications that are indistinguishable from a platform’s native applications. SWT: The Standard Widget Toolkit, Volume 1, will show you how to:

Get SWT, install it, and invoke it from your programs. Understand widgets–the building blocks of GUI–and how they interact with users and compose a GUI. Use graphics routines to configure the appearance of native widgets and draw application-specific graphics. Apply best practices from real-world uses of SWT. Appreciate what makes a quality SWT program. In this book–the first definitive guide to SWT–two of the technology’s lead designers and implementers show you how to break the task of building a GUI-based application into components. They then show how these components are modeled in SWT and provide a series of graded examples. The result is a guided tour of the essential aspects of this exciting toolkit, ranging from mouse and keyboard handling to user-interface controls for native operating systems.

If you want to build modern GUI-based application, SWT: The Standard Widget Toolkit, Volume 1, will prove an invaluable guide and reference.

New Forms
Architecture in the 1990s

In the 1990s architecture has evolved considerably despite economic constraints. The new architecture has been guided by the rapid progress of computer assisted design and a newly rediscovered affinity for the arts. Indeed, many architects - from France’s Dominique Perrault, creator of the new Bibliothèque Nationale de France, to Japan’s Tadao Ando - explain their work in terms of references to minimalism or land art. At the same time art itself has veered towards installations and works which approach architecture. These influences have enriched and diversified contemporary architecture in the developed world.

The Author:
Philip Jodidio (born 1954) studied art history and economics at Harvard and has been editor-in-chief of the French art magazine “Connaissance des Arts” in Paris since 1980. He has written numerous books and articles on contemporary architecture.

One of the central figures in modern landscape architecture, Garrett Eckbo (b. 1910) has been a major influence in the field during an active career spanning five decades. While most of the early American designers concentrated on the private garden and the corporate landscape, Eckbo’s work demonstrated innovative design ideas in a social setting. This engagement with social improvement has stayed with Eckbo throughout his life, distinguishing both his intentions and achievements, from his early work for the Farm Security Administration to his partnerships (including one of the most prominent landscape firms in the world, Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and WilliamsEDAW) and his years as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. In an elegant and detailed book that includes more than 100 of Eckbo’s designs, Marc Treib examines the aesthetic formation of Eckbo’s manner, and by implication the broader field of landscape architecture since the 1930s. Dorothe Imbert writes about Eckbo’s social vision, including his belief that ultimately, landscape design is the “arrangement of environments for people.” The book also contains a biographical and professional chronology and a complete bibliography of publications by and about Garrett Eckbo.

Inevitably, this book has become a little dated, due to ongoing changes on the Internet. Most notably, the rise of wireless computing. Today, an updated version of this book would give this prominent mention. Due to its popularity. And also due to the ability for someone remotely to view your wireless activity. Likewise, an update would also go into how you can take your wireless device (usually a laptop) and find hot spots in various urban locations. A very topical concern nowadays.

Having said the above, though, much of the book still retains relevance. Tips about searching for information by the smart usage of search engines, for instance. Or the using of email, and the precautions to take when buying on the Web.
