Large Sparse Numerical Optimization (Lecture Notes in Computer Science)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540129146 | edition 1984 | PDF | 105 pages | 6,17 mb
PREFACE
In the spring of 1983 I taught a graduate course entitled ‘Large Sparse Numerical Optimization’. Each week I prepared a set of lecture notes to reflect the material being covered. This manuscript is the result. The purpose of the course was to discuss recent developments in the area in order to prepare a student to pursue research. I hope this manuscript will prove useful to others with a similar purpose in mind.
My class was comprised of graduate students from applied mathematics, computer science, and operations research. All students had strong mathematical backgrounds and were familiar with computational methods in mathematics. In addition, most students had some familiarity with numerical optimization, optimization theory and graph-theoretic concepts (or at least I assumed they did). The students were required to do all exercises listed at the end of each chapter. In addition, each student either presented a paper in the area (- I supplied a number of possibilities) or worked on one of the research problems listed in the notes. It was a fun course 7

If you’re ready to go from blindly following step-by-step instructions to “Aha, I finally GET Photoshop!” this is the place to start. In these pages, world renowned Photoshop instructor and best-selling author Ben Willmore writes in his signature style–intuitive, crystal clear, and in-depth–helping you gain the deep understanding needed to master Photoshop’s most essential features. Complex concepts like Curves and Channels are broken down into easy to digest metaphors and descriptions, and features new to Photoshop CS2–such as Bridge, Smart Objects, the revamped Layers Palette and Camera Raw dialog box, as well as the awesome new Warping and Vanishing Point features–are all covered in the depth they deserve, making it possible to quickly adapt them into your daily workflow. Whether you’re a photographer, designer, production artist or hobbyist, the knowledge you gain in this book can dramatically change the way you think about Photoshop.
About the Author
A senior engineer from NASA once said that this man gave the best technical seminar he ever attended. That same year a computer-phobic who had been struggling with Photoshop for years proclaimed that “He takes the Boogie Man out of Photoshop!” This seems to be Ben Willmore’s special gift; he has an uncanny ability to connect with users of every level and mindset; whether it’s first-timers taking their first sniff of Photoshop, or razor-sharp nerds and nerdettes who are on the fast track to technical illumination. The common echo that Ben leaves in his wake seems to be “Aha! I finally GET Photoshop!”
To date, Ben has personally taught over 45,000 Photoshop users on three continents. His descriptions of Curves and Channels are thought to be the best in the industry and his breakthrough teaching style of “not-just-how-but-why,” has made him the in-house instructor of choice for companies such as Mercedes Benz, Adobe Systems, America Online, the U.S. Airforce, Lexis Nexis and Fisher-Price Toys. His award-winning, best-selling book, Adobe Photoshop Studio Techniques is said to be “Arguably, one of the best Photoshop books ever written.” by Photoshop User’s publisher, Jim Workman. His latest book ‘Photoshop CS2: Up to Speed’ is a new concept in books and is the only book focused exclusively on the new features in Photoshop CS2. He is also co-author (with Jack Davis) of “How to Wow: Photoshop for Photographers”, and creator of the best-selling Master Series videos.
He continues to be a featured speaker at publishing conferences and events worldwide, including Photoshop World, American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and the Royal Photographic Society of England. He’s a member of the Dream Team for NAPP and writes for numerous digital imaging and photography publications, including a monthly column for Photoshop User magazine. In 2004 he was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame. His reputation as the “expert’s expert” prompted NAPP’s president, Scott Kelby, to say, “When we get stuck, we call Ben!”
Ben sold his house in the mountains of Colorado in early 2006 and started to live a mobile lifestyle. His home is a 1997 40′ Prevost bus (often referred to as a Rock Star Bus) that was converted by Liberty coach into a motorhome. The bus is pretty much a one bedroom apartment on wheels. Ben spends his time driving to speaking events and photographing National Parks and small town America.

Description
This book is a complete reference to IIS7.0—both for developers and administrators. In addition to covering the common administrative tasks, this book will take an in depth look at IIS7.0 extensibility and operations management. This information will be pulled from people running major intranets and web hosting facilities.
The book will differentiate itself from other IIS 7.0 books by showing how to:
*Automate administrative tasks.
*Monitor and manage an IIS environment, including MOF (Microsoft Operations Framework) and MOM (Microsoft Operations Manager). This information would be useful to systems administrators after they have deployed an IIS solution, by ensuring they are able to stabilize and monitor the environment.
*Debug and troubleshoot IIS. Few people (outside PSS and so forth) have the necessary information on available tools and how to use them effectively.
*Secure the IIS environment–including coverage of authentication protocols, PKI/SSL etc. Most books merely remark that a particular protocol is “secure” (or not secure) without detailing how these protocols work, what their strengths are, and how they can be subverted.
*Extend IIS7.0 through the use of ISAPI filters and HTTPModules.
*Master advanced topics (such as Network Load Balancing/High Availability) that are not covered by other books. Our author team has experience in large scale IIS hosting that few others do.
What you will learn from this book
*How to maximize use of the brand-new FTP server and FastCGI support
*Techniques for automating administrative tasks
*The basics of the new administration tools
*Tips for performance monitoring and tuning
*Ways to extend IIS 7 through the use of ISAPI filters and HTTP modules
*Details for determining whether a particular protocol is secure
*Advanced topics such as programmatic configuration and management and load balancing web farms
Who this book is for
This book is for developers and IIS administrators.

Description
The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between wireless networking and service research communities who have hitherto confined their work to their respective specialties. It not only focuses on the latest technology enablers for speedier and more reliable wireless networking in the home, but also integrates these enablers to provide workable end-to-end solutions from a user’s perspective. The scope is limited to approaches that will enhance the user’s experience in consuming content in the private and secure setting of the home.
From the Back Cover
A broad overview of the home networking field, ranging from wireless technologies to practical applications
In the future, it is expected that private networks (e.g., home networks) will become part of the global network ecosystem, participating in sharing their own content, running IP-based services, and possibly becoming service providers themselves. This is already happening in the so-called “social networks” and peer-to-peer file sharing networks on the Internet—making this emerging topic one of the most active research areas in the wireless communications field.
This book bridges the gap between wireless networking and service research communities, which, until now, have confined their work to their respective fields. Here, a number of industry professionals and academic experts have contributed chapters on various aspects of the subject to present an overview of home networking technologies with a special emphasis on the user as the center of all activities. Coverage includes:
*Networked home use cases and scenarios
*Media format, media exchange, and media interoperability
*Location-aware device and service discovery
*Security in smart homes
*Secure service discovery protocol implementation for wireless ad-hoc networks
*Multimedia content protection in consumer networks
*Mobile device connectivity in home networks
*Unlicensed mobile access/generic access network
*Wireless sensor networks in the home
*Ultra-wideband and sensor networking in the home environment
With a balanced mix of practice and theory, Technologies for Home Networking focuses on the latest technologies for speedier, more reliable wireless networking and explains how to facilitate workable end-to-end solutions from a user’s perspective. This book is an ideal resource for practicing engineers, designers, and managers with an interest in home networking and also serves as a valuable text for graduate students.

Product Description
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides a “simple” set of operations that allows you to more easily monitor and manage network devices like routers, switches, servers, printers, and more. The information you can monitor with SNMP is wide-ranging–from standard items, like the amount of traffic flowing into an interface, to far more esoteric items, like the air temperature inside a router. In spite of its name, though, SNMP is not especially simple to learn.
O’Reilly has answered the call for help with a practical introduction that shows how to install, configure, and manage SNMP. Written for network and system administrators, the book introduces the basics of SNMP and then offers a technical background on how to use it effectively. “Essential SNMP” explores both commercial and open source packages, and elements like OIDs, MIBs, community strings, and traps are covered in depth. The book contains five new chapters and various updates throughout. Other new topics include:
Expanded coverage of SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and SNMPv3
Expanded coverage of SNMPc
The concepts behind network management and change management
RRDTool and Cricket
The use of scripts for a variety of tasks
How Java can be used to create SNMP applications
Net-SNMP’s Perl module
The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing, with real examples, how to use SNMP for system and network administration tasks. Administrators will come away with ideas for writing scripts to help them manage their networks, create managed objects, and extend the operation of SNMP agents.
Once demystified, SNMP is much more accessible. If you’re looking for a way to more easily manage your network, look no further than “Essential SNMP, 2nd Edition,”

Enterprise JavaBeans was recently voted “Best Java Book” by the editors and readers of Java Developer’s Journal. Readers of JavaPro named it the “Best Java Book for Experts.” And Amazon.com included it in the Top Computer Books for 2000. Now the best only gets better! In the new 3rd edition, Enterprise JavaBeans has been completely revised and updated with a thorough introduction to the new 2.0 version of the EJB specification. Significantly different from the earlier version, the 2.0 specification introduces three dramatic improvements: A completely new version of container-managed persistence; local interfaces; and a totally new kind of bean called the “message driven bean.”
The new version of container-managed persistence (CMP) beans in 2.0 is more portable and robust than in the older 1.1 version. Most significant is the introduction of the relationship fields, which allow entity beans to declare relationships with each other as natural references. In order to make this huge leap in component relationships possible, EJB 2.0 had to redesign how entity beans are defined and interact. Our new 3rd edition examines this critical CMP model in detail.
Local interfaces are thoroughly discussed as well. Local interfaces allow beans that are co-located to interact without the overhead of remote method calls. This improves the performance of beans considerably and complements the CMP relationship fields.
Message driven beans are a new kind of enterprise bean based on asynchronous messaging and the Java Message service (JMS). Instead of responding to Java RMI calls, message driven beans process JMS messages sent by messaging clients. An entire chapter is devoted to message-driven beans and how to use them effectively.
In addition, the 3rd edition contains an architecture overview, information on resource management and primary services, design strategies, and XML deployment descriptors.

Prepare yourself for the ultimate test of your brain power!
We’re devised over 500 IQ puzzles to stretch your logical and lateral thinking abilities to the limit.
This book has been meticulously compiled from some of the most devious puzzles you’ve seen. Some will require keen mathematical skill, others an ability to recognise abstract patterns, but all our puzzles are supremely logical and can be solved with the right approach.
If you have a sharp mind, some of the answers to these puzzles will jump straight out of the page at you. However, others will require a bit more thought. Try not to rush for an answer straight away – have faith in your abilities and all will become clear – and don’t feel tempted to have a peek at the answer page too soon. If you feel completely stumped by one particular puzzle, then move on and come back to it later – coming up with the solution to a later puzzle just might give you the inspiration you need!
But the idea of this book is not about right and wrong answers, it’s about exercising your mind and flexing your mental muscles. With the right approach, you too can discover your IQ potential.
The large variety of puzzles here are designed to test your powers of lateral thinking and problem solving to the max! You’ll have to be able to recognize patterns and sequences, spot similarities and differences and even pick your way through our convoluted mindbenders.
The solutions to all the puzzles in this book are staring you right in the face – you just have to be looking at them in the right way!
So sit back, relax your body and let your brain take the strain – it’s all a matter of logic.

In JavaServer Faces, developers learn how to use the new JavaServer Faces framework to build real-world web applications. The book contains everything you’ll need: how to construct the HTML on the front end; how to create the user interface components that connect the front end to your business objects; how to write a back-end that’s JSF-friendly; and how to create the deployment descriptors that tie everything together. This book is a complete guide to the crucial new JSF technology.
JavaServer Faces, or JSF, brings a component-based model to web application development that’s similar to the model that’s been used in standalone GUI applications for years. The technology builds on the experience gained from Java Servlets, JavaServer Pages, and numerous commercial and open source web application frameworks that simplify the development process. In JavaServer Faces, developers learn how to use this new framework to build real-world web applications. The book contains everything you’ll need: how to construct the HTML on the front end; how to create the user interface components that connect the front end to your business objects; how to write a back-end that’s JSF-friendly; and how to create the deployment descriptors that tie everything together. JavaServer Faces pays particular attention to simple tasks that are easily ignored, but crucial to any real application: working with tablular data, for example, or enabling and disabling buttons. And this book doesn’t hide from the trickier issues, like creating custom components or creating renderers for different presentation layers. Whether you’re experienced with JSF or a just starting out, you’ll find everything you need to know about this technology in this book. Topics covered include:
The JSF environment
Creating and rendering components
Validating input

Product Description
Although Sparta’s early history is not clear, by the end of the 8th century most of the other cities of Lakedaimon had been reduced to subject status. The Lakedaimonians were the only full time army in ancient Greece and were thus truly an elite force. The institutions of the state and the system of education were organised with a view to creating superbly trained soldiers. Nick Sekunda examines this unique military machine in this book describing the organisational systems of the Spartan army through the Hellenistic period, how they were trained, the battles they fought, and the society that produced them.

In the tradition of O’Reilly’s “In a Nutshell” series, Python in a Nutshell offers Python programmers one place to look when they need help remembering or deciphering the syntax of this open source language and its many modules. This comprehensive reference guide makes it easy to look up all the most frequently needed information–not just about the Python language itself, but also the most frequently used parts of the standard library and the most important third-party extensions.
Ask any Python aficionado and you’ll hear that Python programmers have it all: an elegant language that offers object-oriented programming support, a readable, maintainable syntax, integration with C components, and an enormous collection of precoded standard library and extension modules. Moreover, Python is easy to learn but powerful enough to take on the most ambitious programming challenges. But what Python programmers have lacked is one concise and clear reference resource, with the appropriate measure of guidance in how best to use Python’s great power. Now Python in a Nutshell fills this need. In the tradition of O’Reilly’s “In a Nutshell” series, this book offers Python programmers one place to look when they need help remembering or deciphering the syntax of this open source language and its many modules. This comprehensive reference guide makes it easy to look up all the most frequently needed information–not just about the Python language itself, but also the most frequently used parts of the standard library and the most important third-party extensions. Python in a Nutshell focuses on Python 2.2 (and all its point releases), currently the most stable and widespread Python release. This book includes:
* A fast-paced tutorial on the syntax of the Python language itself
* An explanation of object-oriented programming in Python, covering both the classic and new-style object models
* Coverage of other core topics, including exceptions, modules, strings, and regular expressions
* A quick reference for Python’s built-in types and functions, as well as the key modules in the Python standard library, including sys, os, time, thread, math, and socket, among many others
* Reference material on important third-party extensions, such as Numeric and Tkinter
* Information about extending Python and embedding it into other applications
Python in a Nutshell provides a solid, no-nonsense quick reference to information that programmers rely on the most. This latest addition to the best-selling “In a Nutshell” series will immediately earn its place in any Python programmer’s library.

Book description
This new book, written specifically for this version of the software, not only offers the basics of how to create, save, set up, run, and print a basic bullets-and-background slideshow, but takes you into the world of multimedia, animation, and interactivity. You’ll learn how to add pictures, sound, video, animated effects, and controls (buttons and links) to their slides, along with ways to pull text, spreadsheets, and animations created in other programs. You can also create your own reusable design templates and learn to automate repetitive tasks with macros. Learn how to take advantage of advanced functions (such as adding custom background images) that existed in previous PowerPoint versions, but were so cleverly hidden that few people ever found them.
Like every other application in Microsoft Office suite, PowerPoint is loaded with features. So many, in fact, that even veterans don’t know where to find them all. Microsoft solved this problem in PowerPoint 2007 by redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes features easy to locate and use. PowerPoint 2007 also boasts improved graphics, additional templates, the ability to save custom layouts, and improved collaboration through SharePoint. One thing Microsoft hasn’t improved is its poor documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help. If you’re familiar with previous versions of the program, you may be lost the first time you fire up the new PowerPoint; or you would be if it weren’t for PowerPoint 2007: The Missing Manual.

Product Description
Beginning with a basic primer on reverse engineering-including computer internals, operating systems, and assembly language-and then discussing the various
applications of reverse engineering, this book provides readers with practical, in-depth techniques for software reverse engineering. The book is broken into two parts, the first deals with security-related reverse engineering and the second explores the more practical aspects of reverse engineering. In addition, the author explains how to reverse engineer a third-party software library to improve interfacing and how to reverse engineer a competitor’s software to build a better product.
* The first popular book to show how software reverse engineering can help defend against security threats, speed up development, and unlock the secrets of competitive products
* Helps developers plug security holes by demonstrating how hackers exploit reverse engineering techniques to crack copy-protection schemes and identify software targets for viruses and other malware
* Offers a primer on advanced reverse-engineering, delving into “disassembly”-code-level reverse engineering-and explaining how to decipher assembly language
From the Back Cover
Sometimes, the best way to advance is in reverse
If you want to know how something works, you take it apart very carefully. That’s exactly what this book shows you—how to deconstruct software in a way that reveals design and implementation details, sometimes even source code. Why? Because reversing reveals weak spots, so you can target your security efforts. Because you can reverse-engineer malicious code in order to neutralize it. Because understanding what makes a program work lets you build a better one. You’ll learn how here.
* Learn to read compiler-generated assembly language code for IA-32 compatible processors
* Decipher an undocumented file format or network protocol
* Understand when reverse engineering is legal, and when—and why—it may not be
* See how hackers use reversing to defeat copy protection technology
* Find out how to pull the plug on malicious code
* Determine how to prevent others from reversing your code, and find out how effective such steps can be
* Explore reverse engineering on the .NET platform and its assembly language, MSIL
* Observe the dissection of a real-world malicious program and see how the attacker used it to control infected systems
About the Author
Eldad Eilam is a consultant in the field of reverse engineering. He assists clients with operating system and in-depth software reverse engineering, and has devoted several years to developing advanced reverse engineering techniques.

One of the secrets to the ever-increasing popularity of Windows Server can be found in the simplicity its administration. The easy-to-use GUI, consistent set of tools, and wizards that walk you through complex tasks allow you to install, configure and maintain Windows servers without any knowledge of programming or scripting languages or learning complicated command-line syntax. It’s possible, in fact, to accomplish about 90% of all Windows administration without ever opening a command prompt or running a script! But what about the other ten percent of the time? While it’s true that most common, day-to-day tasks of Windows administration can be performed from the GUI, it’s not always the best way, especially with complex or repetitive tasks Scripts and command-line tools often provide a faster, more flexible approach.
Windows Server Hacks reveals techniques that go well beyond basic management tasks found in most handbooks to help busy system administrators master the more powerful features of Windows Server. Windows Server Hacks focuses on scripts and other tools that will make your life as an administrator much easier. These tools, or hacks–quick and dirty solutions to problems, or clever ways of doing things–were created by other professionals who’ve also had to struggle to find solutions to administering Windows environments. You’ll save valuable time using their scripts, tools, tips, and advice. Plus, you can easily learn to customize the scripts to create even more powerful tools for your own, specific needs. The book includes secrets of the masters in such areas as Active Directory, User Management, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP, File and Print, IIS, performance and security. The hundred, industrial strength hacks in the book range from those that deal with general administration to more esoteric hacks in the areas of network deployment, patch management, and backup and recovery. No matter which Windows server you use–NT, IIS, 2000, or 2003–this book will put the knowledge and expertise of veteran system administrators and hackers to work for you. Windows Server Hacks will make your life easier while expanding your understanding of the capabilities of Windows Server.

Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL offers web developers a mixture of theoretical and practical information on creating web database applications. Using PHP, and MySQL, two open source technologies the are often combined to develop web applications, the book offers detailed information on designing relational databases and on web application architecture, both of which will be useful to readers who have never dealt with these issues before. The book also introduces Hugh and Dave’s Online Wine Store, a complete (but fictional) online retail site implemented using PHP and MySQL.
What do eBay, Amazon.com and CNN.com have in common? They’re all applications that integrate large databases with the Web. The popularity (and power) of these applications stems from their accessibility and usability: thousands of users can access the same data at the same time without theneed to install any additional software on their computers. Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL offers web developers a mixture of theoretical and practical information on creating web database applications. Using PHP, and MySQL, two open source technologies that are often combined to develop web applications, the book offers detailed information on designing relational databases and on web application architecture, both of which will be useful to readers who have never dealt with these issues before. The book also introduces Hugh and Dave’s Online Wines, a complete (but fictional) online retail site that allows users to browse, search a database, add items to a shopping cart, manage their membership, and purchase wines. Using this site as an example, the book shows you how to implement searching and browsing, store user data, validate user input, manage transactions, and maintain security. If you want to build small to medium-scale web database applications that can run on modest hardware and process more than a million hits a day from users, this book will show you how.

Book description
Using Samba, Second Edition is a comprehensive guide to Samba administration. It covers all versions of Samba from 2.0 to 2.2, including selected features from an alpha version of 3.0, as well as the SWAT graphical configuration tool. Updated for Windows 2000, ME, and XP, the book also explores Samba’s new role as a primary domain controller and domain member server, its support for the use of Windows NT/2000/XP authentication and filesystem security on the host Unix system, and accessing shared files and printers from Unix clients.
This book, which has been officially adopted by the Samba Team and is under the GNU Free Documentation License (FDL), is a comprehensive guide to Samba administration. The 2nd edition focuses on Samba 2.2 and covers the most important features of 3.0, which was under development as this book went to print. Samba is a cross-platform triumph: it turns a Unix or Linux system into a file and print server for Microsoft Windows network clients. Samba is so robust, flexible, fast, and secure that many people are choosing it over Windows NT/2000/XP for their file and print services. Samba is also free software, licensed under the GNU General Public License. This book will help you make file and print sharing as robust, powerful, and efficient as possible. The authors delve into the internals of the Windows activities and protocols to an unprecedented degree, explaining the strengths and weaknesses of each feature in Windows domains and in Samba itself. Using Samba takes you from basic installation and configuration–on both the client and server side, for a wide range of systems–to subtle details of security, cross-platform compatibility, and resource discovery that make the difference between whether a user sees the folder they expect or a cryptic error message. The range of this book knows few bounds. Wondering how to integrate Samba’s authentication with that of a Windows PDC? How to get Samba to serve Microsoft Dfs shares? How to share files on Mac OS X? These and a dozen other issues of interest to system administrators are covered. A whole chapter is dedicated to troubleshooting. Whether you’re playing on one note or a full three-octave range, on your personal computer or an enterprise network, Using Samba will give you an efficient and secure server.

With in-depth complete coverage on the installation process, editing and typesetting, graphical user interfaces, programming system administration, and managing Internet sites, Inside Linux is the only book “smart users” new to Linux will need. Many of the users new to Linux have an understanding of computer technology and will be looking for just the right reference to fit their sophisticated needs. This book guides users to a high level of proficiency with all the flavors of Linux, and help them with crucial system administration chores. Inside Linux is different than other books available because it’s a unique blend of a how-to and a reference guide.
Amazon.com
The author of Inside Linux acknowledges that adequately teaching how to use Linux involves more than communicating a series of recipes. For that reason, he goes to considerable effort to explain what’s going on when the user executes various commands. He uses procedures to expose facts about Linux’s innards, rather than as mere strategies for achieving desired effects. Therefore, his prose–particularly his extended coverage of the bash shell–reads like a scientist’s journal: If we do this, here’s what happens (and by the way, here’s why). The approach is more leisurely than that of many introductory Linux books, and it leads to a deeper understanding of what’s going on under the shell.
The author shows how to configure and use XFree86, the K Desktop Environment (KDE), and GNOME. These are handy skills to have, even if most distributions will more or less automate those processes and some readers may wish instead for information on more obscure aspects of the operating system. Coverage of network configuration, where an intimate knowledge of the command line and configuration files is critical, suits this book’s experiment-and-observe format very well. The reader gets to see lots of important pieces of software in action. There’s nothing about Apache, but the sections on setting up FTP and Unix-to-Unix Copy Protocol (UUCP) services are particularly detailed. –David Wall
Topics covered: Linux for those unfamiliar with the operating system, with particular focus on the Caldera OpenLinux 2.2, Red Hat Linux 6, Slackware Linux 4, and SuSE Linux 6.1 distributions. Installation of XFree86, KDE, and GNOME are covered, as are the mechanics of setting up a TCP/IP network at the command line. Coverage of FTP and UUCP services conclude this book.

Book Info
Designed to help you maximize system integrity and availability on any Unix system-including clusters, monitor systems, disks, networks applications, and databases, with tips for recovery and prevention. Provides quick reference diagnostics and recovery section for systems operators. Softcover. DLC: UNIX (Computer file).
From the Inside Flap
Preface
This book is intended for system administrators and operators who are responsible for maintaining the integrity and availability of mission-critical UNIX systems. The book provides a description of the fault monitoring tools and techniques available for UNIX servers, including systems that are configured as high availability clusters.
This book can therefore be a handy quick reference for an operator trying to troubleshoot a problem in the customer environment, by pointing out where to find key diagnostic messages and describing how to take recovery actions.
A system administrator responsible for the initial configuration and administration of UNIX systems will also find this book useful because it describes the procedures to follow to set up the appropriate levels of system monitoring. The product descriptions can also help in making purchasing decisions as the customer determines the appropriate amount of event monitoring needed in their environment.
An overview of the tasks performed by an operator is provided, with details on how events are received and processed. The remainder of the book focuses on the types of events that can be received, how they are detected, how operators receive event notifications, and how problems can be investigated and recovery performed. The goal is to introduce the necessary tools, but not to show how every possible problem can be solved.
This book provides numerous descriptions of how fault management tools and products can be used to solve a variety of problems. Many of the chapters are focused on specific computer components, such as disks or databases, to be helpful to operators with specific roles. Here is a description of the individual chapters:
Chapter 1, “Analyzing the Role of System Operators,” describes the tasks performed by a system operator and the evolution of fault management.
Chapter 2, “Enumerating Possible Events,” describes the various types of events that are interesting to monitor on a UNIX system.
Chapter 3, “Using Monitoring Frameworks,” describes monitoring frameworks and the administrative tasks that must be done before they can be used.
Chapter 4, “Monitoring the System,” describes the tools and products used to monitor the UNIX server.
Chapter 5, “Monitoring the Disks,” describes the tools and products used to monitor external disk devices.
Chapter 6, “Monitoring the Network,” provides an overview of the many tools available for detecting problems and events related to the use of the network.
Chapter 7, “Monitoring the Application,” describes methods for monitoring the response times and availability of critical applications.
Chapter 8, “Monitoring the Database,” focuses specifically on tools to detect problems and events related to database usage.
Chapter 9, “Enterprise Management,” discusses the problems with trying to deal with fault management for the large-scale customer enterprise.
Chapter 10, “UNIX Futures,” discusses the future plans of some of the major UNIX system vendors in the area of fault management.
Appendix A, “Standards,” describes fault management standards that have emerged and how you can benefit from them.
The Glossary contains the important terms used in the book, and their definitions.
Although it is assumed that most customers concerned about fault management will implement high availability solutions, this book does not describe how to create highly available computing environments. Readers needing additional information on high availability may check Hewlett-PackardÕs external Web site on high availability (hp/go/ha) or read Clusters for High Availability by Peter Weygant.
In general, this book does not discuss the configuration and installation of the hardware and software components of your UNIX system. You should rely on your vendorsÕ product manuals for this.
Many of the examples used in this book were created on HP-UX servers. Other UNIX platforms behave similarly, and we note when tools are supported only on certain UNIX platforms.

Blanchard, author of the bestselling One Minute Manager, has a made a career out of writing the business equivalent of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The self-appointed “Chief Spiritual Officer” of Ken Blanchard Companies, he portrays a business world in which magic tricks and mentors encountered in bohemian cafes lead troubled employees to promotions and advertising awards. Blanchard’s point here is that managers are too busy and distracted to effectively mentor employees and that workers need to assume responsibility for their own failures and successes-seeking the advice of superiors only when they absolutely need to. This is undeniably true. The modern workplace-an uncertain world where layoffs and reorganizations occur with unsettling frequency-requires self-reliance. However, in Blanchard’s “business parable,” self-reliance is found amid a background of invariably cheerful coworkers, loving, maternal bosses and implausibly charming strangers. Blanchard’s first maxim is correct: “Ultimately, it’s in your own best interest to accept responsibility for getting what you need to succeed in the workplace.” But readers may find his fairytale enactment of it too saccharine to be practical.

If you’re using PHP 4, then chances are good that an upgrade to PHP 5 is in your future. The more you’ve heard about the exciting new features in PHP 5, the sooner that upgrade is probably going to be. Although an in-depth, soup-to-nuts reference guide to the language is good to have on hand, it’s not the book an experienced PHP programmer needs to get started with the latest release. What you need is a lean and focused guide that answers your most pressing questions: what’s new with the technology, what’s different, and how do I make the best use of it? In other words, you need a copy of Upgrading to PHP 5. This book is targeted toward PHP developers who are already familiar with PHP 4. Rather than serve as a definitive guide to the entire language, the book zeroes in on PHP 5’s new features, and covers these features definitively. You’ll find a concise appraisal of the differences between PHP 4 and PHP 5, a detailed look at what’s new in this latest version, and you’ll see how PHP 5 improves on PHP 4 code. See PHP 4 and PHP 5 code side-by-side, to learn how the new features make it easier to solve common PHP problems. Each new feature is shown in code, helping you understand why it’s there, when to use it, and how it’s better than PHP 4. Short, sample programs are included throughout the book. Topics covered in Upgrading to PHP 5 include:
The new set of robust object-oriented programming features
An improved MySQL extension, supporting MySQL 4.1, prepared statements, and bound parameters
Completely rewritten support for XML: DOM, XSLT, SAX, and SimpleXML
Easy web services with SOAP
SQLite, an embedded database library bundled with PHP 5
Cleaner error handling with exceptions
Other new language features, such as iterators, streams, and more.
Upgrading to PHP 5 won’t make you wade through information you’ve covered before. Written by Adam Trachtenberg, coauthor of the popular PHP Cookbook, this book will take you straight into the heart of all that’s new in PHP 5. By the time you’ve finished, you’ll know PHP 5 in practice as well as in theory.

Over the past three years PHP has evolved from being a niche language used to add dynamic functionality to small sites to a powerful tool making strong inroads into large-scale, business-critical Web systems.
The rapid maturation of PHP has created a skeptical population of users from more traditional “enterprise” languages who question the readiness and ability of PHP to scale, as well as a large population of PHP developers without formal computer science backgrounds who have learned through the hands-on experimentation while developing small and midsize applications in PHP.
While there are many books on learning PHP and developing small applications with it, there is a serious lack of information on “scaling” PHP for large-scale, business-critical systems. Schlossnagle’s Advanced PHP Programming fills that void, demonstrating that PHP is ready for enterprise Web applications by showing the reader how to develop PHP-based applications for maximum performance, stability, and extensibility.

John Hagel III, Arthur G. Armstrong, “Net Gain: Expanding Markets Through Virtual Communities”
Publisher: Harvard Business School Press | 1997 | ISBN 0875847595 | PDF | 235 pages | 1.04 MB
Virtual communities are groups of people who share common interests and needs who come together on-line. Most are drawn by the opportunity to share a sense of community with like-minded strangers-regardless of where they live. But virtual communities are more than just a social phenomena: what starts off being a group drawn together by common interests ends up being a group with a critical mass of purchasing power-based in part on the fact that in communities, members can exchange information with each other on such things as a product’s price and quality.

Oleg Davydov, “Inside Out: The Radical Transformation of Russian Foreign Trade”
Publisher: Fordham University Press | 1998 | ISBN 0823218309 | PDF | 224 pages | 1.52 MB
Oleg Davydov’s Inside Out examines Russia’s foreign economic relations from 1992 to 1996, a period of drastic change and transformation. During these years, as it underwent the change from being a state monopoly to liberalism, Russia’s economy was rebuilt and the very principle of foreign trade redefined. After 1992, both industrial and agricultural enterprises in Russia were unchainedand received the right to trade freely without any permission from “the top.” Davydov studies the changing role of the government in Russia’s economy as it actively searches for new markets as well as seeks to integrate Russia’s economy into the world’s. These economic reforms, Davydov proposes, should result in the integration of the Commonwealth member countries, Russia’s admittance into the WTO, and the creation of a free trade zone with the EC all of which will provide tremendous opportunities for Russia as it embarks on the road of a sustained and democratic development.

Access 2007 for Starters: The Missing Manual
Publisher: O’Reilly Media | 2007-01-25 | 377 Pages | ISBN: 0596528337 | CHM | 6 MB
This fast-paced book teaches you the basics of Access 2007 so you can start using the program right away. Rather than include every detail, Access for Starters: The Missing Manual shows you how to work with Access’s most-used features and Microsoft’s new context-sensitive user interface. Ideal for small businesses and households, Access runs on PCs and manages large stores of information, including data, pages of text, and pictures — everything from a list of family phone numbers to an enormous product catalog. However, each new version of the program crammed in yet another set of features; so many that even the pros don’t know where to find them all. Access 2007 breaks the mold: Microsoft completely redesigned the user interface with a tabbed toolbar and context-sensitive menus that makes features easy to locate. One thing that hasn’t improved is Microsoft’s documentation. Even if you find the features you need, you still may not know what to do with them. This concise For Starters Manual sticks with the basics — just enough to get you going on your own Access database.

The ultimate example of the generalist approach is of course the design and implementation of programming languages themselves. As problem solving tools go, it is hard to get more general than a programming language like C#. When designing new programming languages (or new versions of old programming languages), we think about common problems that are faced every day by real developers and figure out how to create a language which solves them in a general, aesthetically pleasing, and powerful way that is broadly applicable.

In the introduction to this do-it-yourself manual on the history, teachings, practices, and applications of Buddhism, author Gary Gach feints, “A few people may scoff that this is sacrilegious, or something.” Yes, reading about suchness (the “unrepeatable interpenetration of impermanences”) in the standardized format of a Complete Idiot’s Guide is ironic. But Buddhism, of all religions, embraces irony and paradox. Think of this book as a koan, as the sound of one hand clapping.
Anyway, modernity has already adopted Buddhism as a life-style; as Gach points out, “zen influence (lowercase) has extended to martial arts, gardening, haiku, motorcycle maintenance, you name it.” You can’t get through the day without hearing something described as “very zen.” Yet enlightenment cannot be commodified! It’s always already there for free. That’s why the Buddha is smiling.

What trait do championship poker players and world-class customer service professionals have in common? The ability to reliably read people.
Customer Tells, the innovative new book by bestselling author Dr. Marty Seldman, focuses on the key concept of the “tell,” the ability to read mannerisms, to understand what people mean but are not saying, and to respond accordingly. In poker, the “tell” means knowing the cards a competitor holds; in customer service, it means understanding the customer’s subtle ways of communicating how they want to be treated, even if they can’t articulate it.Seldman, one of the world’s foremost executive coaches and organizational psychologists, uses the principles of Customer Tells in his seminars nationwide. By teaching business professionals of every level how to read tells in customers’ communication styles, body language, dress, questions, reactions, facial expressions, and choices of words, he has increased both their bottom line and employee retention levels.

Author: Joel Comm
What google never told you about making mobey with adsense
When I came out with “What Google Never Told You About Making Money with AdSense” in January 2005, I never imagined
that it would become so popular. Since that time, I have released a third edition, several other ebooks, a member site,
a telecourse series and find myself booked for multiple speaking engagements. Life is funny…
Today marks another milestone for me as I am pleased to announce the revised and expanded fourth edition of my AdSense
ebook, known also by it’s shorter (and easier to say) name, Google AdSense Secrets.
The 235-page fourth edtion is absolutely packed with AdSense goodness! It features the latest AdSense updates that deal with issues such as smart pricing and section targeting. It contains extended chapters on getting traffic to your site and how to get started with AdSense. And I’ve included even more case studies to provide real-life examples of AdSense done properly. The goal is to help my readers pick more money off the Google. And it seems to be working.
This guide is ideal for beginners and intermediate level users, providing strategies for building profitable websites,
monetizing with AdSense, as well as a number of other avenues for generating revenue.
Summary: Joel Comm Didn’t Crack the Code - This Time He Literally Rewrote IT!
Rating: 5
I read the original version of Joel’s book, so I thought that the newest version would probably be a waste of time.
But, I am very familiar with how important it is for Joel to provide value and over deliver. I wasn’t disappointed!
Instead of just restating or rearranging the words from the original version, Joel added all kinds of new strategies
and tips to really get your Google Adsense campaigns on steroids. It’s not a new version but a whole new book
altogether.
It has made a real difference in my campaigns. Just by changing the font and banners colors, I went from averaging
between $550 - $600 a month, to generating that a week. I never would have been able to do that without reading his
book. It paid for itself on day one.

Why is everyone so excited about OOP? The chief problem with computer programs is complexity. Large programs are probably the most complicated entities ever created by humans. Because of this complexity, programs are prone to error, and software errors can be expensive and even life threatening (in air-traffic control, for example). Object-Oriented Programming offers a new and powerful way to cope with this complexity. Its goal is clearer, more reliable, more easily maintained programs.
Of the Object-Oriented Programming languages, C++ is by far the most widely used. (Java, a recent addition to the field of OO languages, lacks certain features, such as pointers, that make it less powerful and versatile than C++.)
This book teaches Object-Oriented Programming with the C++ programming language, using either Microsoft or Borland compilers. It is suitable for professional programmers, students, and kitchen-table enthusiasts.
You can use this book even if you have no previous programming experience. However, such experience, in BASIC or Pascal, for example, certainly won’t hurt.
You do not need to know the C language to use this book. Many books on C++ assume that you already know C, but this one does not. It teaches C++ from the ground up. If you do know C, it won’t hurt, but you may be surprised at how little overlap there is between C and C++.
You should be familiar with the basic operations of Microsoft Windows, such as starting applications and copying files.
