The goal of this hands–on course is to deconstruct a web site’s home page in order to identify its structural elements and feature set. Using Acrobat Pro and the web developer’s toolkit, Laurie shows how to capture a homepage and create, in another layer, its visual framework (wireframe). Exercise files and a downloadable PDF quiz accompany the course.

Book Description
With over 250,000 sold, Harvey and Paul Deitel’s C++ How to Program is the world’s best-selling introduction to C++ programming. Now, this classic has been thoroughly updated! The Deitels’ groundbreaking How to Program series offers unparalleled breadth and depth of programming concepts and intermediate-level topics for further study. The books in this series feature hundreds of complete, working programs with thousands of lines of code. Deitels’ C++ How to Program is the most comprehensive, practical introduction to C++ ever published-with hundreds of hands-on exercises, roughly 250 complete programs written and documented for easy learning, and exceptional insight into good programming practices, maximizing performance, avoiding errors, debugging, and testing. The updated Fifth Edition now includes a new early classes pedagogy-classes and objects are introduced in Chapter 3 and used throughout the book as appropriate. The new edition uses string and vector classes to make earlier examples more object-oriented. Large chapters are broken down into smaller, more manageable pieces. A new OOD/UML ATM case study replaces the elevator case study of previous editions, and UML in the OOD/UML case study and elsewhere in the book has been upgraded to UML 2. The Fifth Edition features new mini case studies (e.g., GradeBook and Time classes). An employee hierarchy replaces Point/Circle/Cylinder to introduce inheritance and polymorphism. Additional enhancements include tuned treatment of exception handling, new “Using the Debugger” material and a new “Before You Begin” section to help readers get set up properly. Also included are separate chapters on recursion and searching/sorting. The Fifth Edition retains every key concept and technique ANSI C++ developers need to master: control statements, functions, arrays, pointers and strings, classes and data abstraction, operator overloading, inheritance, virtual functions, polymorphism, I/O, templates, exception handling, file processing, data structures, and more. It also includes a detailed introduction to Standard Template Library (STL) containers, container adapters, algorithms, and iterators. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all the source code from the book. A valuable reference for programmers and anyone interested in learning the C++ programming language and object-oriented development in C++.

With more changes than any previous version, Java 5.0 makes it easier to develop safe, powerful code. But it isn’t any easier to learn. That means the bestselling hands-on tutorial Learning Java takes on greater significance, delivering a no-nonsense approach to Java 5.0 features, such as “generics,” and looks into the popular Eclipse IDE. The accompanying CD includes the Java 5.0 SDK for Windows, Linux, and Solaris.

Version 5.0 of the Java 2 Standard Edition SDK is the most important upgrade since Java first appeared a decade ago. With Java 5.0, you’ll not only find substantial changes in the platform, but to the language itself-something that developers of Java took five years to complete. The main goal of Java 5.0 is to make it easier for you to develop safe, powerful code, but none of these improvements makes Java any easier to learn, even if you’ve programmed with Java for years. And that means our bestselling hands-on tutorial takes on even greater significance.Learning Java is the most widely sought introduction to the programming language that’s changed the way we think about computing. Our updated third edition takes an objective, no-nonsense approach to the new features in Java 5.0, some of which are drastically different from the way things were done in any previous versions. The most essential change is the addition of “generics”, a feature that allows developers to write, test, and deploy code once, and then reuse the code again and again for different data types. The beauty of generics is that more problems will be caught during development, and Learning Java will show you exactly how it’s done.

Java 5.0 also adds more than 1,000 new classes to the Java library. That means 1,000 new things you can do without having to program it in yourself. That’s a huge change. With our book’s practical examples, you’ll come up to speed quickly on this and other new features such as loops and threads. The new edition also includes an introduction to Eclipse, the open source IDE that is growing in popularity.

Learning Java, 3rd Edition addresses all of the important uses of Java, such as web applications, servlets, and XML that are increasingly driving enterprise applications. The accompanying CD includes the Java 5.0 SDK for Windows, Linux, and Solaris, plus the Eclipse IDE, the NetBeans IDE, and the many example programs from the book. Download

MCTS Exam 70-620 on Installing, Configuring, and Managing Windows Vista Desktop Computers
Includes 24 Videos
This training allows Vista to become the great OS for you that it can be. Vista has tremendous potential, but unfortunately, the learning curve has been a little too steep for users to pickup on their own. Now you can learn to configure Windows Vista computers for maximum performance — and at the same time prepare for certification as a Technology Specialist on Microsoft Windows Vista.

Here’s what you’ll learn in each of the Configuring Windows Vista videos:

Video 1 - “Configuring Windows Vista Series Introduction” - This first nugget introduces you to Exam-Pack 70-620: Microsoft Windows Vista, Configuring. You’ll learn about exam requirements, how this series is structured, and what you can hope to get out of the training.

Video 2 - “Installation: Hardware Requirements, Editions” - If you want Windows Vista to run as expected, your hardware has to be up to snuff. First this nugget covers two types of Vista hardware — hardware to work okay and hardware to work blazing fast. Then you’ll learn about all the different Vista editions, including the features you’ll find in each. This includes all the features and functionalities in Windows Vista Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate.

Video 3 - “Windows Vista Installation and Clean Install” - Here’s how you install Windows Vista on a new computer that’s never had a Windows OS installed on it before. First you’ll learn a few key terms to know during the installation process. Then you’ll learn the different methods you can use to install Windows Vista. After that you’ll learn about Windows Product Activation (WPA) so you can work within your licensing and stay legal. And finally you’ll walk through an actual clean install of Windows Vista, which lays the foundation for the other types of installations you’ll learn about next.

Video 4 - “Windows Vista Upgrade” - Upgrading to Windows Vista has a few differences from a clean install. When you put the Windows Vista installation DVD into computer running an older version of Windows or another edition of Windows Vista, you’ll see the Upgrade Advisor — this is what you’ll use to run through the upgrade. In this video you’ll learn how Upgrade Advisor will help you recognize any hurdles to upgrading and then work them out before problems come up. You’ll also learn what upgrade paths are available to you. Plus you’ll get a first introduction to the Windows Easy Transfer migration tool. Finally, you’ll see a simple demonstration of an upgrade to Windows Vista.

Video 5 - “Windows Vista Migration and Windows Easy Transfer” - In this nugget you dive in deeper into Windows Vista migration using Windows Easy Transfer tool plus another tool called the User State Migration Tool 3.0 (USMT). These tools help you migrate user documents and settings into Vista from previous versions of Windows. USMT doesn’t really show up on the 70-620 exam, but it will be very helpful as you deploy Windows Vista in a corporate or enterprise environment.

Video 6 - “Anytime Upgrade, Troubleshooting Installation” - This nugget explains in detail how Anytime Upgrade makes it easy to move from one edition of Vista to another, without losing any important settings or information. Plus you’ll learn some of the best techniques for troubleshooting Windows Vista installation issues. Finally this nugget covers application compatibility — so you don’t hit a brick wall when you have Windows Vista up and running just fine but you can’t seem to get your favorite application to run.

Video 7 - “Install and Configure Drivers” - Drivers are the key to getting Vista to “speak” with the hardware it is running on. In this nugget you learn how to install and configure drivers in Windows Vista. This includes knowing about Driver Signatures, Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL), Windows Software Engineering (WSE), and Driver Verifier. Plus you’ll learn how to troubleshoot when things go wrong using Roll Back, Uninstall Driver, and Last Known Good.

Video 8 - “Troubleshooting Post-Installation Configuration Issues, Windows Aero” - Okay — Vista is installed. Now what? This nugget takes you through configurations and system settings you’ll want to implement post-installation to get Vista to run well. This includes advanced options and selections in Device Manager. Also, you’ll learn how problem reports help you track down and solve problems coming from the processes and applications running on your system. Finally, you’ll discover how customizing display properties can drastically effect system performance — including using, not using, or limiting the front-end Windows Aero interface.

Video 9 - “Configuring Internet Explorer, Configure and Troubleshoot Parental Controls” - This nugget is all about connecting to the Internet with Windows Vista using Microsoft Internet Explorer. This includes configuring and troubleshooting parental controls to control internet access. Also, you’ll learn how to use Content Advisor to configure what types of websites users of the computer can access. Plus you’ll learn how to use RSS feeds and why they’re useful, using search within Windows and within your browser, and finally about the improved Internet printing experience in Windows Vista.

Video 10 - “Security: Configure and Troubleshoot User Account Control” - This first nugget on security in Windows Vista walks you through how to configure and troubleshoot User Account Control. Understand the core concepts surrounding user accounts including permissions for different types and groups of accounts. Plus learn what to behavior you can expect from User Account Control. Also you’ll walk through how to setup and manage policies including group and local policies. Finally, this nugget covers what the “Secure Desktop” is, how it effects users, and how it can help IT professionals.

Video 11 - “Security: Windows Defender” - Windows Defender is a cool tool integrated with Windows Vista to help you control Adware, Spyware, Malware, and Viruses. This second security nugget goes through how these are defined on the Microsoft exam, plus shows you how you can setup Windows Defender to protect your Vista computer automatically.

Video 12 - “Dynamic Security for IE7″ - Internet Explorer continues to give you more options for locking down security. This nugget details how to use these features, including Protected Mode, the Phishing Filter, the Pop-up blocker, Security Zones that help you control what can be downloaded and run on your computer, Privacy settings including cookie handling, how to identify Secure Websites in IE7, and finally controlling Add-ons that sometimes improve user experience but also pose a security risk.

Video 13 - “Security: Configure Security Settings in Windows Firewall” - This last security-focused nugget walks you through how Windows Firewall has advanced in Vista. It starts by going through essential terms — like TCP/IP, Port, Network Interface, Inbound and Outbound Traffic, IPSec, Bidirectional, Stateful, Home, Work, Public, Private, and Domain — you need to know before you configure the firewall, then dives into the new features, explains Network Location Awareness (NLA) profiles, shows you the different interfaces for configuring Windows Firewall, and concludes by demonstrating a configuration of the firewall.

Video 14 - “Configuring Networking by Using the Network and Sharing Center” - Now that you have security in line it’s time to connect to the network. This nugget starts with understanding IP Addressing and Network Services. Then it moves into common network types you’ll see and how Vista fits within each. Also, you’ll see how easy it has become to connect to networks using the Network and Sharing Center inside Vista, including both wired and wireless networks. Next you’ll learn about Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), and finally about various network connection properties. And along the way DNS Name Resolution, Network Address Translation (NAT), and Troubleshooting Connectivity are covered as well.

Video 15 - “Sharing Resources and Securing Wireless Access Points” - This nugget goes deeper into two important networking topics — resource sharing and wireless security. First you’ll learn how using the Network and Sharing Center makes it easy than ever to share files, folders, and printers. And then you’ll learn about Wireless Security including changing your SSID and disabling broadcasting, using WEP and WPA wireless security, and filtering by MAC address.

Video 16 - “Remote Access: Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop” - Remote access in Vista is split into two core uses — remote assistance for supporting others, and remote desktop for using all your computer’s files and resources from another location. This nugget covers how to configure remote access in Vista including both remote desktop and remote assistance. This will be a key point of confusion on the 70-620 exam and instructor James Conrad contacted an insider at Microsoft to clarify that the content in this nugget maps exactly to the remote access topics you will see on the exam — this is not the remote access you’re already familiar with!

Video 17 - “Network Troubleshooting” - This is the last nugget that focuses heavily on networking — in it you’ll learn how to troubleshoot network connectivity in Vista. First you’ll learn a series of steps you can go through that will identify and allow you to fix most network connectivity issues. Then you’ll learn about the tools you’ll be using — IPCONFIG, PING, TRACERT, PATHPING, and Automating Private IP Addressing (APIPA).

Video 18 - “Configure Windows Mail” - Windows Mail replaces Outlook Express as the native Email and Newsgroup client in Windows Vista. In this nugget you’ll first review mail protocols including SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4. Then you’ll dive in and configure Windows Mail and work with mail messages you send and receive through Windows Mail. Finally, you’ll also look at how to configure newsgroups and work with newsgroup messages.

Video 19 - “Configure Windows Calendar, Meeting Space” - This nugget covers another set of applications included with Windows Vista — Windows Calendar and Meeting Space. The nugget starts with an explanation of how to go in and edit or add more details to the contacts stored on your computer. Then you’ll learn how to use Windows Calendar to schedule and share events and appointments, and Windows Meeting Space to share your desktop, applications, and more over the internet or an ad-hoc wireless network.

Video 20 - “Configure Windows Sidebar, Media Applications” - This nugget covers a few more applications you’ll see included with Windows Vista — Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Windows Fax and Scan, and the Windows Sidebar. You’ll learn how to configure each of these applications, plus you’ll get demos of some cool features you’ll want to play around with to discover in more depth.

Video 21 - “Optimizing Windows Vista” - Vista has tons of cool features — which can be hard on your system resources if not configured to work with what’s available. It also comes with some cool tools that help with this. Learn how to optimize your Vista system, including using the new ReadyBoost technology, managing Startup Programs, enabling or disabling Visual Effects, and Indexing to improve performance. Also, you’ll learn about Power Plans, doing Disk Cleanup, and defragmenting with Diskeeper.

Video 22 - “Reliability Tools” - Making sure your computer runs reliably is a big topic. This nugget doesn’t fall short. You’ll learn about troubleshooting with Problem Reports and Solutions, plus using Problem History to track problem trends. You’ll learn how to cleanup Internet Explorer including deleting browsing history. You’ll learn how hardware can limit performance and how to discover if that is happening on your system. And how the dramatically improved Event Viewer helps make troubleshooting easier. And how the Reliability and Performance Monitor gives you an inside look into current and past performance of your computer. Plus how to diagnose the overall system health. And for the final two topics this nugget covers the Task Manager and where to find comprehensive System Information.

Video 23 - “Data Protection and Windows Update” - This nugget covers two best practices for making sure your data is always safe and your computer stays secure. First you’ll learn about Data Protection, specifically how to back up and restore data using tools in Vista — including taking a snapshot of your System State for easy recognition, finding and using previous versions of files, and how to do complete PC backups easily. Then, you learn about configuring Windows Update to make sure you get all the latest patches and improvements as Microsoft releases them.

Video 24 - “Mobile Computing” - This final nugget covers unique features and functionality of Vista for use with notebooks and other mobile computers. First you’ll learn how to configure external displays. Then you’ll learn how to configure and use Network Projectors, Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC), Sync Center, Offline Files SideShow, Tablet PCs, and finally the nugget concludes with a discussion of the three Power States available in Windows Vista.

George Levy, “Computational Finance”
Butterworth-Heinemann | 2004-01-27 | ISBN: 0750657227 | 456 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB
Computational Finance presents a modern computational approach to mathematical finance within the Windows environment, and contains financial algorithms, mathematical proofs and computer code in C/C++. The author illustrates how numeric components can be developed which allow financial routines to be easily called by the complete range of Windows applications, such as Excel, Borland Delphi, Visual Basic and Visual C++.

These components permit software developers to call mathematical finance functions more easily than in corresponding packages. Although these packages may offer the advantage of interactive interfaces, it is not easy or computationally efficient to call them programmatically as a component of a larger system. The components are therefore well suited to software developers who want to include finance routines into a new application.

Typical readers are expected to have a knowledge of calculus, differential equations, statistics, Microsoft Excel, Visual Basic, C++ and HTML.

* Enables reader to incorporate advanced financial modelling techniques in Windows compatible software
* Aids the development of bespoke software solutions covering GARCH volatility modelling, derivative pricing with Partial Differential Equations, VAR, bond and stock options

Enjoy this great book! Brought to you by SMIRK

Jeff Healey - While My Guitar Gently Weeps | 464 MB
This song, “While my guitar gently weeps”, is a version of a song by George Harrison, performed by the brilliant guitarist Jeff Healey. You can find it in the album “Platinum & Gold Collection” by The Jeff Healey Band, edited in 2004.

Norman Jeff Healey (March 25th 1966-March 2th 2008) has been a brilliant guitarist. His style mixed jazz, blues, rock…
He was born in Toronto (Canada). When he was less than 1 year old, he lost his sight due to a retinoblastoma (a cancer of the eyes).
Healey fought against this terrible illness all his life, until the cancer killed him when he was 41 years old.

Healey was a fan of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Clapton… Without a doubt, these artists were a big influence in his work. When he was only 6 years old, he made his debut.

We will never forget his powerful way of playing, with the guitar flat on his lap.

Do you need an introductory book on data and databases? If the book is by Joe Celko, the answer is yes. Data and Databases: Concepts in Practice is the first introduction to relational database technology written especially for practicing IT professionals. If you work mostly outside the database world, this book will ground you in the concepts and overall framework you must master if your data-intensive projects are to be successful. If you’re already an experienced database programmer, administrator, analyst, or user, it will let you take a step back from your work and examine the founding principles on which you rely every day-helping you to work smarter, faster, and problem-free.

Whatever your field or level of expertise, Data and Databases offers you the depth and breadth of vision for which Celko is famous. No one knows the topic as well as he, and no one conveys this knowledge as clearly, as effectively-or as engagingly. Filled with absorbing war stories and no-holds-barred commentary, this is a book you’ll pick up again and again, both for the information it holds and for the distinctive style that marks it as genuine Celko.

* Supports its extensive conceptual information with example code and other practical illustrations.
* Explains fundamental issues such as the nature of data and data modeling, and moves to more specific technical questions such as scales, measurements, and encoding.
* Offers fresh, engaging approaches to basic and not-so-basic issues of database programming, including data entities, relationships and values, data structures, set operations, numeric data, character string data, logical data and operations, and missing data among others.
* Covers the conceptual foundations of modern RDBMS technology, making it an ideal choice for students.

The latest version of the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) Courseware is due to be released and presented for the first time at Hacker Halted USA 2008 in June. Many small details of CEH Version 6 have been peppered on the Internet, as well as snippets of teaser copy on EC-Council’s own web site.

“With a total of 28 new and never seen before modules, covering the latest concepts, featuring more real life cases, and showcasing the latest hacking and security tools, the Certified Ethical Hacker (Version 6) will be the most advanced course ever.”

So I requested an interview with EC-Council to see if we could get confirmation as well as clarification. The questions are compiled from my own list as well as some others that were suggested by readers of The Ethical Hacker Network (EH-Net). EC-Council replied in a very timely manner with answers from both Haja Mohideen, co-founder of EC-Council, and Chuck Swanson, the instructor scheduled to teach the very first v6 offering of the course.

One hidden factor powerfully influences the way users react to your software, hardware, User Interfaces (UI), or web applications: how those systems utilize users’ time. Now, drawing on the nearly 40 years of human computer interaction research–including his own pioneering work–Dr. Steven Seow presents state-of-the-art best practices for reflecting users’ subjective perceptions of time in your applications and hardware.
Seow begins by introducing a simple model that explains how users perceive and expend time as they interact with technology. He offers specific guidance and recommendations related to several key aspects of time and timing–including user tolerance, system responsiveness, progress indicators, completion time estimates, and more. Finally, he brings together proven techniques for impacting users’ perception of time drawn from multiple disciplines and industries, ranging from psychology to ******, animal research to entertainment.

• Discover how time and timing powerfully impact user perception, emotions, and behavior
• Systematically make your applications more considerate of users’ time
• Avoid common mistakes that consistently frustrate or infuriate users
• Manage user perceptions and tolerance, and build systems that are perceived as faster
• Optimize “flow” to make users feel more productive, empowered, and creative
• Make reasonable and informed tradeoffs that maximize limited development resources
• Learn how to test usability issues related to time–including actual vs. perceived task duration

Designing and Engineering Time is for every technology developer, designer, engineer, architect, usability specialist, manager, and marketer. Using its insights and techniques, technical and non-technical professionals can work together to build systems and applications that provide far more value—and create much happier users.

Steven C. Seow has a unique combination of experience in both experimental psychology and software usability. He joined Microsoft as a User Researcher after completing his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Brown University with a research focus on human timing and information theory models of human performance. Seow holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and wrote his master’s thesis on distortions in time perception. With the boom of Internet, IP-based applications, such as WWW and
multimedia, bave been an essential part of our life, and there is an
ever-increasing demand for accessing high-speed Internet services
anywhere and anytime. This trend unavoidably has huge impacts on the
design of the next-generation satellite systems. On the other hand, with
its broadcasting nature and unique coverage, satellite systems also can
play an important role in the next-generation Internet. For example,
satellite systems can be a good driver for the deployment of IPv6 in the
Internet, and can provide a fast way to reach end-users because they do
not rely on construction of a high-speed terrestrial networks. The
workshop proceedings will focus on the IP networking of next-generation
satellite systems. Topics include IPv6 over satellites, new
architectures of next-generation satellite systems, satellite and
terrestrial network integration, network monitoring and measurement, and

Security Monitoring with Cisco Security MARS

Threat mitigation system deployment

Networks and hosts are probed hundreds or thousands of times a day in an
attempt to discover vulnerabilities. An even greater number of automated
attacks from worms and viruses stress the same devices. The sheer volume
of log messages or events generated by these attacks and probes,
combined with the complexity of an analyst needing to use multiple
monitoring tools, often makes it impossible to adequately investigate
what is happening.

Cisco(r) Security Monitoring, Analysis, and Response System (MARS) is a
next-generation Security Threat Mitigation system (STM). Cisco Security
MARS receives raw network and security data and performs correlation and
investigation of host and network information to provide you with
actionable intelligence. This easy-to-use family of threat mitigation
appliances enables you to centralize, detect, mitigate, and report on
priority threats by leveraging the network and security devices already
deployed in a network, even if the devices are from multiple vendors.

Security Monitoring with Cisco Security MARS helps you plan a MARS
deployment and learn the installation and administration tasks you can
expect to face. Additionally, this book teaches you how to use the
advanced features of the product, such as the custom parser, Network
Admission Control (NAC), and global controller operations. Through the
use of real-world deployment examples, this book leads you through all
the steps necessary for proper design and sizing, installation and
troubleshooting, forensic analysis of security events, report creation
and archiving, and integration of the appliance with Cisco and
third-party vulnerability assessment tools.

Learn the differences between various log aggregation and correlation
systems:

- Examine regulatory and industry requirements
- Evaluate various deployment scenarios
- Properly size your deployment
- Protect the Cisco Security MARS appliance from attack
- Generate reports, archive data, and implement disaster recovery
plans
- Investigate incidents when Cisco Security MARS detects an attack
- Troubleshoot Cisco Security MARS operation
- Integrate Cisco Security MARS with Cisco Security Manager, NAC, and
third-party devices

Learn the tricks of the trade so you can build and architect applications that scale quickly–without all the high-priced headaches and service-level agreements associated with enterprise app servers and proprietary programming and database products. Culled from the experience of the Flickr.com lead developer, “Building Scalable Web Sites” offers techniques for creating fast sites that your visitors will find a pleasure to use. Creating popular sites requires much more than fast hardware with lots of memory and hard drive space. It requires thinking about how to grow over time, how to make the same resources accessible to audiences with different expectations, and how to have a team of developers work on a site without creating new problems for visitors and for each other. Presenting information to visitors from all over the world * Integrating email with your web applications * Planning hardware purchases and hosting options to have as much as you need without breaking your wallet * Partitioning and distributing databases to support large datasets and simultaneous transactions * Monitoring your applications to find and clear bottlenecks * Providing services APIs and using services from other providers to increase your site’s reach and capabilities Whether you’re starting a small web site with hopes of growing big or you already have a large system that needs maintenance, you’ll find “Building Scalable Web Sites” to be a library of ideas for making things work.

Many consider chess to be the best game ever invented. Chess imposes a set of rules and has finite limits, but just as you start to think you’re finally solving its mysteries, chess thwarts you. Sometimes, therefore, the game is frustrating, but far more often, chess proves both surprising and delightful.

The deeper you get into chess, the more of its secrets you unearth — but the game has never been tapped out. Even today’s monster computers are far from playing the theorized “perfect” chess game.

“Wow, what a compendium of great information and how-to’s! I am so impressed! Elliotte’s written a book whose title comes nowhere near to doing it justice. Covering much more than just refactoring, this book explains how to do it right the first time around, in a clear and lucid voice. Harold obviously knows his stuff. A must-read!” —Howard Katz, Proprietor, Fatdog Software
“After working with people who require the skills and tools necessary to continually improve the quality and security of their applications, I have discovered a missing link. The ability to rebuild and recode applications is a key area of weakness for web designers and web application developers alike. By building refactoring into the development process, incremental changes to the layout or internals efficiently averts a total rewrite or complete take-over. This is a fantastic book for anyone who needs to rebuild, recode, or refactor the web.” —Andre Gironda, tssci-security.com
“Elliotte’s book provides a rare collection of hints and tricks that will vastly improve the quality of web pages. Virtually any serious HTML developer, new or tenured, in any size organization will reap tremendous benefit from implementing even a handful of his suggestions.” —Matt Lavallee, Development Manager, MLS Property Information Network, Inc.
Like any other software system, Web sites gradually accumulate “cruft” over time. They slow down. Links break. Security and compatibility problems mysteriously appear. New features don’t integrate seamlessly. Things just don’t work as well. In an ideal world, you’d rebuild from scratch. But you can’t: there’s no time or money for that.
Fortunately, there’s a solution: You can refactor your Web code using easy, proven techniques, tools, and recipes adapted from the world of software development. In Refactoring HTML, Elliotte Rusty Harold explains how to use refactoring to improve virtually any Web site or application. Writing for programmers and non-programmers alike, Harold shows how to refactor for better reliability, performance, usability, security, accessibility, compatibility, and even search engine placement. Step by step, he shows how to migrate obsolete code to today’s stable Web standards, including XHTML, CSS, and REST—and eliminate chronic problems like presentation-based markup, stateful applications, and “tag soup.”
The book’s extensive catalog of detailed refactorings and practical “recipes for success” are organized to help you find specific solutions fast, and get maximum benefit for minimum effort. Using this book, you can quickly improve site performance now—and make your site far easier to enhance, maintain, and scale for years to come. Topics covered include
• Recognizing the “smells” of Web code that should be refactored • Transforming old HTML into well-formed, valid XHTML, one step at a time • Modernizing existing layouts with CSS • Updating old Web applications: replacing POST with GET, replacing old contact forms, and refactoring JavaScript • Systematically refactoring content and links • Restructuring sites without changing the URLs your users rely upon
This book will be an indispensable resource for Web designers, developers, project managers, and anyone who maintains or updates existing sites. It will be especially helpful to Web professionals who learned HTML years ago, and want to refresh their knowledge with today’s standards-compliant best practices. There has never been a better time to switch from Windows to Mac, and
this incomparable guide will help you make a smooth transition. New York
Times columnist and Missing Manuals creator David Pogue gets you past
three challenges: transferring your stuff, assembling Mac programs so
you can do what you did with Windows, and learning your way around Mac
OS X. Why is this such a good time to switch? Upgrading from one version
of Windows to another used to be simple. But now there’s Windows Vista,
a veritable resource hog that forces you to relearn everything. Learning

using Windows XP, we’ve got you covered, too. If you’re ready to take on
Mac OS X Leopard, the latest edition of this bestselling guide tells you
everything you need to know: Transferring your stuff — Moving photos,
MP3s, and Microsoft Office documents is the easy part. This book gets
you through the tricky things: extracting your email, address book,
calendar, Web bookmarks, buddy list, desktop pictures, and MP3 files.
Re-creating your software suite — Big-name programs (Word, Photoshop,
Firefox, Dreamweaver, and so on) are available in both Mac and Windows
versions, but hundreds of other programs are available only for Windows.
This guide identifies the Mac equivalents and explains how to move your
data to them. Learning Leopard — Once you’ve moved into the Mac, a
final task awaits: Learning your way around. Fortunately, you’re in good
hands with the author of Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, the #1
bestselling guide to the Macintosh. Moving from Windows to a Mac
successfully and painlessly is the one thing Apple does not deliver.

Book Description

The Mac has fully embraced OpenGL throughout its visual systems. In fact, Apple’s highly efficient, modern OpenGL implementation makes Mac OS X one of today’s best platforms for OpenGL development. OpenGL® Programming on Mac OS® X is the first comprehensive resource for every graphics programmer who wants to create, port, or optimize OpenGL applications for this high-volume platform.
Leading OpenGL experts Robert Kuehne and J. D. Sullivan thoroughly explain the Mac’s diverse OpenGL APIs, both old and new. They illuminate crucial OpenGL setup, configuration, and performance issues that are unique to the Mac platform. Next, they offer practical, start-to-finish guidance for integrating key Mac-native APIs with OpenGL, and leveraging the full power of the Mac platform in your graphics applications.

Coverage includes

* A thorough review of Mac hardware and software architectures and their performance implications
* In-depth, expert guidance for accessing OpenGL from each of the Mac’s core APIs: CGL, AGL, and Cocoa
* Interoperating with other Mac APIs: incorporating video with QuickTime, performing image effects with Core Image, and processing CoreVideo data
* Analyzing Mac OpenGL application performance, resolving bottlenecks, and leveraging optimizations only available on the Mac
* Detecting, integrating, and using OpenGL extensions
* An accompanying Web site (www.macopenglbook.com) contains the book’s example code, plus additional OpenGL-related resources.

OpenGL® Programming on Mac OS® X will be valuable to Mac programmers seeking to leverage OpenGL’s power, OpenGL developers porting their applications to the Mac platform, and cross-platform graphics developers who want to take advantage of the Mac platform’s uniquely intuitive style and efficiency.

About the Author

Robert P. Kuehne leads Blue Newt Software, a consultancy that specializes in helping clients enhance their 3D graphics applications. Formerly Technical Lead for Silicon Graphics’ OpenGL Shading Language, Kuehne has been involved with OpenGL since it was created, in roles ranging from programmer to shader compiler developer to SIGGRAPH presenter. He has also been a Macintosh developer since the early 1990s.

J. D. Sullivan is an OpenGL driver engineer who has been writing graphics software professionally for more than fifteen years. While at Silicon Graphics, Inc., he was one of the original designers and implementers of the Volumizer API and later worked as part of the OpenGL software team focused on the Cobalt and Krypton graphics chipsets. Since SGI, Sullivan has worked on the Mac as his primary development platform, and he serves on the OpenGL Architecture Review Board.

Book Description

This book offers a simple to read, fast way to discover all that’s new in Mac OS X Leopard, and how to make the most of it, whether you are new to the Mac, or simply upgrading from a previous version of Mac OS X.

New additions to the operating system are showcased, including the changes to the Dock and Finder, and new features such as Stacks, Cover Flow, and Quick View introduced, before the book moves on to give a basic guide to using the Mac—creating folders, moving files, installing applications, and burning CDs, for example.

Communication and organization are covered with chapters on Mail and iChat, including information on how to get the most of the latest features such as creating to-do items, and reading RSS feeds in Mail, and sharing screens in iChat. There are chapters that cover Spaces and Time Machine, perhaps the most talked about feature in this release of Mac OS X.

iLife is fully dealt with, with discrete chapters on iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD, and GarageBand, followed with a chapter on iWeb showing how to share your creations, and using Front Row to be entertained by them.

The final chapters of the book give an overview of some more advanced areas of using a Mac, namely how Mac OS X itself works, and also how to develop for the Mac. These chapters are intended only to give a glimpse as to the possibilities—the book is primarily aimed at regular users.

A number of appendices conclude the book, one providing a guide to those users who are switching from Windows, and another that contains a useful list of recommended Mac applications for a wide array of uses.

In the authors own words “This book isn’t a bible or tome about how to do anything and everything with Mac OS X, instead its goal is to introduce the major features of Mac OS X so you can be up and running quickly”.

know to perform your job as a Linux network administrator, whether
you’re new to the job or have years of experience. With Linux Networking

have all the answers. Networking is a complex subject with reams of
reference material that’s difficult to keep straight, much less

that clearly explains the commands and configurations, and does not tax
your patience with endless ramblings and meanderings into theory and
obscure RFCs, this is the book for you. You will find recipes for:

administration with SSH Building secure VPNs with OpenVPN, and a Linux

A classic O’Reilly title since 1993, sendmail now covers Versions 8.10
through 8.14 of this email routing program, including dozens of new
features, options, and macros. This edition also takes a more
nuts-and-bolts approach than its predecessors. It includes both an
administration handbook and a reference guide that provide you with
clear options for installing, configuring and managing sendmail’s latest
versions and companion programs. The sendmail program has withstood the
test of time because of its ability to solve the mail-routing needs of
all sites large or small, complex or simple. But it’s also difficult to
configure and even more difficult to understand. That’s why this book
has proven valuable since the dawn of email. With it, you will be able
to configure the program to meet any need, so that you never again have
to call in a sendmail guru to bail you out. sendmail includes the
following sections:

- Some Basics is especially useful for people new to the program. It
covers the basic concepts underlying mail delivery and the roles
sendmail plays in that delivery
- Administration covers all aspects of handling sendmail, from
downloading and installing new releases to managing mailing lists and
aliases
- Configuration Reference contains a heavily cross-referenced guide
for configuring and tuning sendmail. Every arcane detail of sendmail is
listed alphabetically
- Appendices contain more detail about sendmail than you may ever need
This edition also includes new material on SSL and AUTH and a new
chapter on Mitlers. If you’re interested in what has changed since the
last edition, one appendix categorizes the many improvements of
sendmail’s intervening versions by chapter, complete with references to
the appropriate sections and page numbers in the book. With sendmail,
system administrators, programmers, network engineers, and even
inexperienced users will be able to match this challenging but necessary
utility to the needs of their network.

Summary:
Handling IPv6 for the first time is a challenging task even for the experienced system administrator. New concepts and mechanisms make it necessary to rethink well-established methods of the IPv4 protocol.
This book is a practical guide to IPv6 addressing Unix and network administrators with experience in TCP/IP(v4) but not necessarily any IPv6 knowledge. It focuses on reliable and efficient operation of IPv6 implementations available today rather than on protocol specifications. Consequently, it covers the essential concepts - using instructive and thoroughly tested examples - on how to configure, to administrate, and to debug IPv6 setups. These foundations are complemented by discussions of best practices and strategic considerations aimed at overall efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and interoperation.

The examples in this book cover all relevant aspects concerning Debian GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris. Examples about other Unix derivatives are available online at www.benedikt-stockebrand.de.

Language: English
ISBN-10: 1594201722
ISBN-13: 978-1594201721
Format: PDF

Description: The author of Free Culture shows how we harm our children—and almost anyone who creates, enjoys, or sells any art form—with a restrictive copyright system driven by corporate interests. Lessig reveals the solutions to this impasse offered by a collaborative yet profitable “hybrid economy”.

Lawrence Lessig, the reigning authority on intellectual property in the Internet age, spotlights the newest and possibly the most harmful culture war—a war waged against our kids and others who create and consume art. America’s copyright laws have ceased to perform their original, beneficial role: protecting artists’ creations while allowing them to build on previous creative works. In fact, our system now criminalizes those very actions.

For many, new technologies have made it irresistible to flout these unreasonable and ultimately untenable laws. Some of today’s most talented artists are felons, and so are our kids, who see no reason why they shouldn’t do what their computers and the Web let them do, from burning a copyrighted CD for a friend to “biting” riffs from films, videos, songs, etc and making new art from them.

Criminalizing our children and others is exactly what our society should not do, and Lessig shows how we can and must end this conflict—a war as ill conceived and unwinnable as the war on drugs. By embracing “read-write culture,” which allows its users to create art as readily as they consume it, we can ensure that creators get the support—artistic, commercial, and ethical—that they deserve and need. Indeed, we can already see glimmers of a new hybrid economy that combines the profit motives of traditional business with the “sharing economy” evident in such Web sites as Wikipedia and YouTube. The hybrid economy will become ever more prominent in every creative realm—from news to music—and Lessig shows how we can and should use it to benefit those who make and consume culture.

Remix is an urgent, eloquent plea to end a war that harms our children and other intrepid creative users of new technologies. It also offers an inspiring vision of the post-war world where enormous opportunities await those who view art as a resource to be shared openly rather than a commodity to be hoarded.

Product Description
Prentice Hall’s most important C programming title in years. A companion volume to Kernighan & Ritchie’s C PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE. A collection of reusable functions (code for building data structures, code for performing math functions and scientific calculations, etc.) which will save C programmers time and money especially when working on large programming projects. The C Library is part of the ANSI (American National Standard Institute) for the C Language. This new book contains the complete code for the library. It covers elements of the library with which even the most experienced C programmers are not familiar such as internationalization (the ability to write programs that can adapt to different cultural locales, for example, using the C library, programmers can write software that manipulates large character sets such as Kanji). Structured like the Standard C Library, it contains 15 headers declaring or defining all of the names in the library. A separate chapter covers each header, including excerpts from relevant portions of the C Standard showing all codes needed to implement each portion of the library and explaining why it is necessary. The book teaches readers the concepts and design issues associated with library building. Using this book, programemrs will be less likely to re-code something that already exists in a given program. Plauger is one of the world’s leading experts on C and the C Library.

From the Publisher
This is the first comprehensive treatment of ANSI and ISO standards for the C Library. Written by a world renowned author on the C programming language and the head of the ANSI committee that standardized the C Library, this new guide contains the complete code of the Standard C Library and includes practical advice on using all 15 headers. All C programmers will benefit from the book’s focus on the concepts, design issues, and trade-offs associated with library building; using this book, programmers will make the best use of the C Library and will learn to build programs with maximum portability and reusability.

Amazon.com Review
Just about every C programmer I respect learned C from this book. Unlike many of the 1,000 page doorstops stuffed with CD-ROMs that have become popular, this volume is concise and powerful (if somewhat dangerous) — like C itself. And it was written by Kernighan himself. Need we say more?

Product Description
Presents a complete guide to ANSI standard C language programming. Written by the developers of C, this new version helps readers keep up with the finalized ANSI standard for C while showing how to take advantage of C’s rich set of operators, economy of expression, improved control flow, and data structures. This 2nd edition has been completely rewritten with additional examples and problem sets to clarify the implementation of difficult language constructs. 7 x 9 1/4.

Product Description
There are lots of introductory C books, but this edition of Practical C Programming is the one that has the no-nonsense, practical approach that has made Nutshell Handbooks(R) so popular. C programming is more than just getting the syntax right. Style and debugging also play a tremendous part in creating programs that run well and are easy to maintain. Practical C Programming teaches you not only the mechanics of programming, but also how to create programs that are easy to read, debug, and maintain. This third edition introduces popular Integrated Development Environments on Windows systems, as well as UNIX programming utilities, and features a large statistics-generating program to pull together the concepts and features in the language.

There are lots of introductory C books, but this is the one that has the no-nonsense, practical approach that has made Nutshell Handbooks(R) famous. C programming is more than just getting the syntax right. Style and debugging also play a tremendous part in creating programs that run well and are easy to maintain. This new edition of Practical C Programming teaches you not only the mechanics of programming, but also how to create programs that are easy to read, debug, and maintain. It features more extensive examples, offers an introduction to graphical development environments, and describes Electronic Archaeology (the art of going through someone else’s code). As in earlier editions, practical rules are still stressed. For example, there are fifteen precedence rules in C (&& comes before || comes before ?:). The practical programmer reduces these to two: multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction put parentheses around everything else. Topics covered: Good programming style C syntax: what to use and what not to use The programming environment, including integrated development kits The total programming process Floating point limitations Tricks and surprises Program examples conform to ANSI C. Covers several Windows compilers, as well as UNIX compilers.

Most of them are in iso files format, Its not just a video tutorials, those are mostly

Labs, it means you open an html file inside that, and you will see 2 parts, one in flash and

another in text.
At each lesson you finished, you will get to challange flash where you have to practice

things you have learned, its like working on real cisco device.
You’ll have the flash SSH shell, and you have to type in the cisco commands, and in case you

make a mistake, you’ll get wrong alerts and you can then either correct it or need to read

and listen to the section again and see the correct answer by clicking the DEMO option, that

will show you the entire solution.
by the way, this is original cisco materials that you need to pay $$$$$$ for it, but for

keen learners it is for freeee!!

The main focus of Pro Web 2.0 Application Development with GWT is a case study of a real Web 2.0 application called ToCollege.net.

What you’ll learn:
- You’ll take a full tour of a modern Web 2.0 startup’s codebase. That’s 15,000 lines of source code that includes everything from Google Gears integration to Acegi OpenID, Lucene full–text search, and Google Maps, all of it integrated with GWT 1.5.
- Leveraging this book’s available source code, you’ll see the nitty–gritty details of how to merge a modern Web 2.0 application stack including Hibernate, Spring, Spring MVC 2.5, SiteMesh, and Freemarker together.
- You’ll see how to wire GWT into an industry standard Maven build environment, which will help you get up to speed quickly and avoid configuration headaches.
- The great pitfall of many Ajax applications is they’re mostly opaque to search engines. You’ll see the ToCollege.net solution to this thorny problem.
- Protection from XSS and XSRF attacks is beyond the scope of simple GWT tutorials, but they are a real concern for a site like ToCollege.net. The book will cover the ToCollege.net security architecture in detail.

Software-defined radios (SDRs) have been around for more than a decade. The first complete Global Positioning System (GPS) implementation was described by Dennis Akos in 1997. Since then several research groups have presented their contributions.

We therefore find it timely to publish an up-to-date text on the subject and at the same time include Galileo, the forthcoming European satellite based navigation system. Both GPS and Galileo belong to the category of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).

Comprehension of complex systems comes from an understanding of not only the behavior of constituent elements but how they act together to form the behavior of the whole. However, given the multidisciplinary nature of complex systems, the scattering of information across different areas creates a chaotic situation for those trying to understand possible solutions and applications. Modeling and Control of Complex Systems brings together a number of research experts to present some of their latest approaches and future research directions in a language accessible to system theorists.
Contributors discuss complex systems such as networks for modeling and control of civil structures, vehicles, robots, biomedical systems, fluid flow systems, and home automation systems. Each chapter provides theoretical and methodological descriptions of a specific application in the control of complex systems, including congestion control in computer networks, autonomous multi-robot docking systems, modeling and control in cancer genomics, and backstepping controllers for stabilization of turbulent flow PDEs. With this unique reference, you will discover how complexity is dealt with in different disciplines and learn about the latest methodologies, which are applicable to your own specialty. The balanced mix of theory and simulation presented by Modeling and Control of Complex Systems supplies a strong vehicle for enlarging your knowledge base a fueling future advances and incredible breakthroughs.

This book describes the design and implementation of the BSD operating system–previously known as the Berkeley version of UNIX. Today, BSD is found in nearly every variant of UNIX, and is widely used for Internet services and firewalls, timesharing, and multiprocessing systems. Readers involved in technical and sales support can learn the capabilities and limitations of the system; applications developers can learn effectively and efficiently how to interface to the system; systems programmers can learn how to maintain, tune, and extend the system. Written from the unique perspective of the system’s architects, this book delivers the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and authoritative technical information on the internal structure of the latest BSD system.

As in the previous book on 4.3BSD (with Samuel Leffler), the authors first update the history and goals of the BSD system. Next they provide a coherent overview of its design and implementation. Then, while explaining key design decisions, they detail the concepts, data structures, and algorithms used in implementing the system’s facilities. As an in-depth study of a contemporary, portable operating system, or as a practical reference, readers will appreciate the wealth of insight and guidance contained in this book.

Highlights of the book:

* Details major changes in process and memory management
* Describes the new extensible and stackable filesystem interface
* Includes an invaluable chapter on the new network filesystem
* Updates information on networking and interprocess communication

About the Author
Marshall Kirk McKusick writes books and articles, consults, and teaches classes on UNIX- and BSD-related subjects. While at the University of California at Berkeley, he implemented the 4.2BSD fast file system, and was the research computer scientist at the Berkeley Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) overseeing the development and release of 4.3BSD and 4.4BSD. He has twice served as the president of the board of the Usenix Association.

Keith Bostic is a member of the technical staff at Berkeley Software Design, Inc. He spent 8 years as a member of the CSRG, overseeing the development of over 400 freely redistributable UNIX-compatible utilities, and is the recipient of the 1991 Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of California, Berkeley, for his work to make 4.4BSD freely redistributable. Concurrently, he was the principle architect of the 2.10BSD release of the Berkeley Software Distribution for PDP-11s, and the coauthor of the Berkeley Log Structured Filesystem and the Berkeley database package (DB). He is also the author of the widely used vi implementation, nvi. He received his undergraduate degree in Statistics and his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University. He is a member of the ACM, the IEEE, and several POSIX working groups. In his spare time, he enjoys scuba diving in the South Pacific, mountain biking, and working on a tunnel into Kirk and Eric’s specially constructed wine cellar. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Margo Seltzer, and their cats.

Michael J. Karels is the System Architect and Vice President of Engineering at Berkeley Software Design, Inc. He spent 8 years as the Principal Programmer of the CSRG at the University of California, Berkeley as the system architect for 4.3BSD. Karels received his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Notre Dame. While a graduate student in Molecular Biology at the University of California, he was the principal developer of the 2.9BSD UNIX release of the Berkeley Software Distribution for the PDP-11. He is a member of the ACM, the IEEE, and several POSIX working groups. He lives with his wife Teri Karels in the backwoods of Minnesota.

John S. Quarterman is Senior Technical Partner at Texas Internet Consulting, which consults in networks and open systems with particular emphasis on TCP/IP networks, UNIX systems, and standards. He is the author of The Matrix: Computer Networks and Conferencing Systems Worldwide (Digital Press, 1990), and is a coauthor of UNIX, POSIX, and Open Systems: The Open Standards Puzzle (1993), Practical Internetworking with TCP/IP and UNIX (1993), The Internet Connection: System Connectivity and Configuration (1994), and The E-Mail Companion: Communicating Effectively via the Internet and Other Global Networks (1994), all published by Addison-Wesley. He is editor of Matrix News, a monthly newsletter about issues that cross network, geographic, and political boundaries, and of Matrix Maps Quarterly; both are published by Matrix Information and Directory Services, Inc. (MIDS) of Austin, Texas. He is a partner in Zilker Internet Park, which provides Internet access from Austin. He and his wife, Gretchen Quarterman, split their time among his home in Austin, hers in Buffalo, New York, and various other locations.
