Shortly after World War I, Ford and GM created the large modern corporation, with its financial and statistical controls, mass production, and assembly lines. In the 1980s, Toyota stood out for combining quality with continuous refinement. Today, Google is reinventing business yet again-the way we work, how organizations are controlled, and how employees are managed.
Management consultant Bernard Girard has been analyzing Google since its founding in 1998, and now in The Google Way, he explores Google’s innovations in depth-many of which are far removed from the best practices taught at the top business schools.
As you read, you’ll see how much of Google’s success is due to its focus on users and automation. You’ll also learn how eCommerce has profoundly changed the relationship between businesses and their customers, for the first time giving customers an important role to play in a major corporation’s growth. Finally, Girard speculates about the limits of Google’s business model and discusses the challenges it will face as it continues to grow.
Google’s culture is one of innovation. Why not make that spirit of innovation your own?

The audience for this book is beginning/novice web developers with a knowledge of HTML but not of JavaScript. The book begins with an introduction to basic JavaScript language features and then proceeds to work through a number of examples according to category (images, frames, browser windows, forms, regular expressions and strings, user events, and cookies). After, there are two chapters on AJAX fundamentals.
The book does not claim to be an in-depth resource. The general purpose of the QuickStart series of books is to provide an overview of the main concepts and practices in use by web developers today. It is meant to be a STARTING POINT to introduce novices to technologies, not as an in-depth reference. The authors of this and other QuickStart books point this out continually, yet still get bad reviews from people who have not taken the time to read about the purposes of various series from technical publishers. This is unfortunate for the public as well as unfair to the authors.
A previous reviewer mentioned what he took to be atrocious coverage of Ajax. The book contains two chapters exclusively covering Ajax. The first covers the fundamental techniques used to take advantage of this combination of technologies. The second chapter explores some of the popular Ajax toolkits currently available. This is consistent with the purpose of the book. Some readers may be interested in heading down the development path, yet others may be more interested in design and in using pre-existing tools. This book caters to both and has no intention of deceiving either reader.
The following quote is a good example of this. It is an excerpt from the title page of Chapter 16, which follows the introductory chapter (basic XMLHttpRequest usage, etc.) and precedes the Ajax toolkit chapter:
“[Writing] Ajax applications can be difficult. They often require a great deal of knowledge of working with the DOM, CSS, JavaScript, and server resources. Since this is a book for beginning scripters, we’ve shown you how to do some easy things with Ajax, so you can see that learning Ajax techniques is well within your reach. But many books have been written that are completely devoted to showing intermediate-to-advanced scripters how to create Ajax applications, and our Ajax chapters are no substitute for that kind of in-depth exploration.”
As for the dual-column formatting that some reviewers disliked, it is consistent with the formatting of the entire QuickStart series, as well as the QuickPro series of the same publisher. The format is nice for tackling specific techniques in a concise amount of space. It is not as abstractly engaging as conventional technical books, but it is not meant to be. The format is excellent for explaining techniques (especial design techniques) as well as for conveying a sense of quick forward momentum.
I’ve only recently started reading books from Peachpit Press, and I will turn to them before I turn anywhere else. I am a web developer who has been doing light programming for the last several years. I like these books because they get me up to speed quickly, and act as a comprehensive starting point, allowing me to understand “where I need to go from here.”
This book is excellent as a broad introduction with lots of real-world examples. If you’re a novice web developer with a decent grasp of HTML wishing for a comprehensive introduction to JavaScript and practical JavaScript techniques, this is the book for you.
However, if you’re well-grounded and are looking for more in-depth coverage of JavaScript and Ajax techniques, “Professional JavaScript for Web Developers” (Nicholas Zakas / Wrox Press) and “Professional Ajax” (Zakas, et. al. / Wrox Press) are excellent in-depth resources geared toward real-world professional development, and both are among the best peer-reviewed titles in existence on these subjects.

If you’re developing a content management system in PHP 5, there are times when you simply have to roll-your-own, for whatever reason. In those situations, this book will be invaluable.
If you’re looking for an inside guide to putting together the working framework of a flexible, robust content management system in PHP 5, this book is for you.
As a former development team leader on the renowned Mambo open-source content management system, author Martin Brampton offers unique insight and practical guidance into the problem of building an architecture for a content management system.
Following the scene-setting first chapter, each chapter in the book tackles a different aspect of developing the author’s new Aliro PHP 5 CMS framework, with:
- A concise statement of the problem
- Discussion of the important design issues and problems faced
- Creation of the framework solution
The framework is built on a strongly object-oriented architecture throughout, including adherence to MVC principles, and you will learn how to create classes for handling such things as menus, modules, components, sessions, and user tracking.
Administration and security issues are discussed as an integral part of the design and implementation of framework features. The final chapter discusses the key issues that affect a wide range of specific content handlers and explores a practical example in detail.

The Art of Intrusion
It would be difficult to find an author with more credibility than Mitnick to write about the art of hacking. In 1995, he was arrested for illegal computer snooping, convicted and held without bail for two years before being released in 2002. He clearly inspires unusual fear in the authorities and unusual dedication in the legions of computer security dabblers, legal and otherwise.
Renowned for his use of “social engineering,” the art of tricking people into revealing secure information such as passwords, Mitnick (The Art of Deception) introduces readers to a fascinating array of pseudonymous hackers. One group of friends bilks Las Vegas casinos out of more than a million dollars by mastering the patterns inherent in slot machines; another fellow, less fortunate, gets mixed up with a presumed al-Qaeda–style terrorist; and a prison convict leverages his computer skills to communicate with the outside world, unbeknownst to his keepers. Mitnick’s handling of these engrossing tales is exemplary, for which credit presumably goes to his coauthor, writing pro Simon. Given the complexity (some would say obscurity) of the material, the authors avoid the pitfall of drowning readers in minutiae. Uniformly readable, the stories—some are quite exciting—will impart familiar lessons to security pros while introducing lay readers to an enthralling field of inquiry.

Introduction to Electron Microscopy for Biologists
Product Description
Introduction to Electron Microscopy for Biologists is ideal for the scientist who may be considering electron microscopy as a tool to extend molecular, biochemical, or light microscope observations to the next level of structural information, only available by electron microscopy. Each chapter briefly surveys the present state of structural information in a particular area, be it an individual but widely occurring molecule such as actin or collagen, together with the methods for visualization, either as an extracted and purified entity, or in situ within its biological context.
Not only is this book an introduction to electron microscopy in general, but it is also useful for those within the field who wish to move to a different area of expertise, for instance an approach based on rapid freezing, rather than more conventional protocols. This should be a first choice reference for any biologist wanting to know what does it look like across the full spectrum of cell and molecular biology of life science.
*Illustrates the advantages of electron microscopy and the protocols required for fine structural visualization of individual molecules upwards, ranging from mammalian tissues to experimental organisms.
*Comprehensive chapters cover both structural information on each area as well as the protocols themselves
*Includes methods covering specific labeling, as well as methods for quantification and three dimensional reconstruction from molecular to tissue levels.

Virtual Crowds: Methods, Simulation, and Control
Product Description
There are many applications of computer animation and simulation where it is necessary to model virtual crowds of autonomous agents. Some of these applications include site planning, education, entertainment, training, and human factors analysis for building evacuation. Other applications include simulations of scenarios where masses of people gather, flow, and disperse, such as transportation centers, sporting events, and concerts.
Most crowd simulations include only basic locomotive behaviors possibly coupled with a few stochastic actions. Our goal in this survey is to establish a baseline of techniques and requirements for simulating large-scale virtual human populations. Sometimes, these populations might be mutually engaged in a common activity such as evacuation from a building or area; other times they may be going about their individual and personal agenda of work, play, leisure, travel, or spectator. Computational methods to model one set of requirements may not mesh well with good approaches to another. By including both crowd and individual goals and constraints into a comprehensive computational model, we expect to simulate the visual texture and contextual behaviors of groups of seemingly sentient beings. Table of Contents: Introduction / Crowd Simulation Methodology Survey / Individual Differences in Crowds / Framework (HiDAC + MACES + CAROSA) / HiDAC: Local Motion / MACES: Wayfinding with Communication and Roles / CAROSA: Functional Crowds / Initializing a Scenario / Evaluating Crowds

Extreme Weather Hits Home: Protecting Your Buildings from Climate Change
Product Description
We know how to prepare our homes for each seasonal change, but do we know how to prepare for climate change? Violent weather events like floods, tornadoes, ice storms, and hurricanes only tell part of the story. Climate change is frequently more subtle, but its effects on our homes and properties can still be devastating.
Nearly 50 percent of North America has a potential for structural damage from shifting moisture in expansive clay soils, a condition that is already costing billions of dollars each year. Humidity is projected to increase, trapping moisture in wall cavities and resulting in deterioration. As the climate changes and moisture levels adjust, there are a number of proactive steps that can be taken to prevent or lessen expensive repairs.
Extreme Weather is the only book of its kind that shows how to protect your home or business from climate change by focusing on the following areas:
- Risk and causal assessment, due to region and soil
- Extreme weather’s rapid and slow effects
- Site, foundation, wall, and roof considerations and modifications
- Insurance options
- Anticipated changes for the United States, Canada, and Mexico
Our homes are one of the most expensive investments we will ever make. They are also our refuge from the elements, and we must protect them so they can protect us. This book is a valuable resource for all property owners.

Multiobjective Optimization: Interactive and Evolutionary Approaches
Product Description
Multiobjective optimization deals with solving problems having not only one, but multiple, often conflicting, criteria. Such problems can arise in practically every field of science, engineering and business, and the need for efficient and reliable solution methods is increasing. The task is challenging due to the fact that, instead of a single optimal solution, multiobjective optimization results in a number of solutions with different trade-offs among criteria, also known as Pareto optimal or efficient solutions. Hence, a decision maker is needed to provide additional preference information and to identify the most satisfactory solution. Depending on the paradigm used, such information may be introduced before, during, or after the optimization process. Clearly, research and application in multiobjective optimization involve expertise in optimization as well as in decision support.
This state-of-the-art survey originates from the International Seminar on Practical Approaches to Multiobjective Optimization, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in December 2006, which brought together leading experts from various contemporary multiobjective optimization fields, including evolutionary multiobjective optimization (EMO), multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) and multiple criteria decision aiding (MCDA).
This book gives a unique and detailed account of the current status of research and applications in the field of multiobjective optimization. It contains 16 chapters grouped in the following 5 thematic sections: Basics on Multiobjective Optimization; Recent Interactive and Preference-Based Approaches; Visualization of Solutions; Modelling, Implementation and Applications; and Quality Assessment, Learning, and Future Challenges.

Performance Analysis of Queuing and Computer Networks
Product Description
Performance Analysis of Queuing and Computer Networks develops simple models and analytical methods from first principles to evaluate performance metrics of various configurations of computer systems and networks. It presents many concepts and results of probability theory and stochastic processes.
After an introduction to queues in computer networks, this self-contained book covers important random variables, such as Pareto and Poisson, that constitute models for arrival and service disciplines. It then deals with the equilibrium M/M/1/?queue, which is the simplest queue that is amenable for analysis. Subsequent chapters explore applications of continuous time, state-dependent single Markovian queues, the M/G/1 system, and discrete time queues in computer networks. The author then proceeds to study networks of queues with exponential servers and Poisson external arrivals as well as the G/M/1 queue and Pareto interarrival times in a G/M/1 queue. The last two chapters analyze bursty, self-similar traffic, and fluid flow models and their effects on queues.

An Economic Development Architecture for New Orleans By Kevin F. McCarthy
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina, followed by multiple levee failures, devastated New Orleans and other parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast, inflicting major damage to commercial property, infrastructure, and housing. The failure of the levees and the subsequent flooding of New Orleans caused enormous damage and disruption to the city, its people, and its economy.
Recovering from a disaster of this magnitude poses a major challenge to the city, the state, and the nation. The complexity of this challenge is compounded by the fact that New Orleans’ population and economy had been lagging for several decades before Katrina. In response to this situation, this report provides recommendations regarding effective organizational and strategic approaches to revitalizing the city’s economy, identifies the best practices that other cities have used to foster economic development, and describes how these practices might be applied to New Orleans. Recommendations consider the organizational structure of a New Orleans economic development program and how it should strategically focus its efforts. Planning for the successful future economic development in the region depends on avoiding the mistakes of past efforts, so consideration is also given to historical trends and development missteps.
Contents
Chapter One: Introduction
Chapter Two: Review of Economic Development Efforts
Chapter Three: Economic Development In New Orleans
Chapter Four: Summary of Key Findings and Recommendations
Appendix: Development Agencies Researched. Alphabetical List of Interviewees
In response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee failures on New Orleans and its economy, the Horizon Initiative, a private-sector organization, was formed in 2006 to expedite the city’s recovery with a particular focus on economic recovery.
Horizon, in collaboration with the New Orleans City Council, has been evaluating alternative organizational structures and strategies to revitalize the city’s economy. To assist in this effort, Horizon contracted with the RAND Gulf States Policy Institute (RGSPI) to provide recommendations as to the most effective organizational and strategic approaches to accomplish Horizon’s objective. This report was produced in response to that challenge and aims to provide an organizational architecture for New Orleans’s economic revitalization.
As such, it specifically addresses three questions:
- What strategies should the effort employ?
- How should the effort be organized?
- How should priorities be assigned, and how should the approach be implemented? This report is not a detailed redevelopment plan. The content and approach of a specific economic plan or strategy are essential for putting it into action, and such issues are beyond the scope of this report. What this research does is provide guidelines for evaluating both alternative organizational structures and the many economic development proposals being put forward for New Orleans’s economic recovery.

Programming 8-bit PIC Microcontrollers in C: with Interactive Hardware Simulation
Product Description
PIC Microcontrollers are present in almost every new electronic application that is released from garage door openers to the iPhone. With the proliferation of this product more and more engineers and engineers-to-be (students) need to understand how to design, develop, and build with them. Martin Bates, best-selling author, has provided a step-by-step guide to programming these microcontrollers (MCUs) with the C programming language.
With no previous knowledge of C necessary to read this book, it is the perfect for entry into this world for engineers who have not worked with PICs, new professionals, students, and hobbyists. As MCUs become more complex C is the most popular language due to its ability to process advanced processes and multitasking. RTOSs, that is a need to know for engineers, is also discussed as more advanced MCUs require timing and organization of programming and implementation of multitasking. The book includes lots of source code, circuit schematics, and hardware block diagrams. Microchip’s PICDEM Mechatronics board is used to detail the examples throughout the book.
*Focuses on the C programming language which is by far the most popular for microcontrollers (MCUs)
*Features Proteus VSMg the most complete microcontroller simulator on the market, along with CCS PCM C compiler, both are highly compatible with Microchip tools
*Extensive downloadable content including fully worked examples
