Traditional relational databases and embedded databases both have shortcomings that can leave a developer perplexed. So for many people, the solution resides in an open source embeddable database with an amazingly small footprint (less than 250 kilobytes). SQLite packs a powerful array of features and can handle databases as large as 2 terabytes. It offers a flexible set of datatypes and the ability to perform transactions, and it is supported by languages like C, PHP, Perl, and Python. And because SQLite’s databases are completely file based, privileges are granted at the operating system level, allowing for easy and fast user management.
The Definitive Guide to SQLite is the first book to devote complete coverage to the latest version of this powerful database. It offers you a thorough overview of SQLite capabilities and APIs, while remaining cognizant of newcomers who may be making their first foray into a database environment with SQLite. This book serves as both a first-time tutorial and future reference guide.

This latest edition of The Definitive Guide to Django is updated for Django 1.1, and, with the forward–compatibility guarantee that Django now provides, should serve as the ultimate tutorial and reference for this popular framework for years to come.
Django, the Python–based equivalent to Ruby’s Rails web development framework, is one of the hottest topics in web development today. Lead developer Jacob Kaplan–Moss and Django creator Adrian Holovaty show you how they use this framework to create award–winning web sites by guiding you through the creation of a web application reminiscent of www.chicagocrime.org.
Django: Web Development Done Right is broken into three parts, with the first introducing Django fundamentals such as installation and configuration, and creating the components that together power a Django–driven web site. The second part delves into the more sophisticated features of Django, including outputting non–HTML content such as RSS feeds and PDFs, caching, and user management. The appendixes serve as a detailed reference to Django’s many configuration options and commands.
What you’ll learn
- The first half of this book explains in depth how to build web applications using Django including the basics of dynamic web pages, the Django templating system interacting with databases, and web forms.
- The second half of this book discusses higher-level concepts such as caching, security, and how to deploy Django.
- The appendixes form a reference for the commands and configurations available in Django.

C++ is a large, complex language, and learning it is never entirely easy. But some concepts and techniques must be thoroughly mastered if programmers are ever to do professional-quality work. This book cuts through the technical details to reveal what is commonly understood to be absolutely essential. In one slim volume, Steve Dewhurst distills what he and other experienced managers, trainers, and authors have found to be the most critical knowledge required for successful C++ programming. It doesn’t matter where or when you first learned C++. Before you take another step, use this book as your guide to make sure you’ve got it right!
This book is for you if
- You’re no “dummy,” and you need to get quickly up to speed in intermediate to advanced C++
- You’ve had some experience in C++ programming, but reading intermediate and advanced C++ books is slow-going
- You’ve had an introductory C++ course, but you’ve found that you still can’t follow your colleagues when they’re describing their C++ designs and code
- You’re an experienced C or Java programmer, but you don’t yet have the experience to develop nuanced C++ code and designs
- You’re a C++ expert, and you’re looking for an alternative to answering the same questions from your less-experienced colleagues over and over again
C++ Common Knowledge covers essential but commonly misunderstood topics in C++ programming and design while filtering out needless complexity in the discussion of each topic. What remains is a clear distillation of the essentials required for production C++ programming, presented in the author’s trademark incisive, engaging style.

Resilient T-SQL code is code that is designed to last, and to be safely reused by others. The goal of defensive database programming, the goal of this book, is to help you to produce resilient T-SQL code that robustly and gracefully handles cases of unintended use, and is resilient to common changes to the database environment. Too often as developers, we stop work as soon as our code passes a few basic tests to confirm that it produces the ‘right result’ in a given use case. We do not stop to consider what other possible ways in which the code might be used in the future, or how our code will respond to common changes to the database environment, such as a change in the database language setting, or a change to the nullability of a table column, and so on. In the short-term, this approach is attractive; we get things done faster. However, if our code is designed to be used for more than just a few months, then it is very likely that such changes can and will occur, and the inevitable result is broken code or, even worse, code that silently starts to behave differently, or produce different results. When this happens, the integrity of our data is threatened, as is the validity of the reports on which critical business decisions are often based. At this point, months or years later, and long after the original developer has left, begins the painstaking process of troubleshooting and fixing the problem. Would it not be easier to prevent all this troubleshooting from happening? Would it not be better to spend a little more time and effort during original development, to save considerably more time on troubleshooting, bug fixing, retesting, and redeploying? This is what defensive programming is all about: we learn what can go wrong with our code, and we proactively apply this knowledge during development. This book is filled with practical, realistic examples of the sorts of problems that beset database programs, including: - Changes in database objects, such as tables, constraints, columns, and stored procedures. - Changes to concurrency and isolation levels. - Upgrades to new versions of SQL Server. - Changes in requirements. - Code reuse. - Problems causing loss of data integrity. - Problems with error handling in T-SQL. In each case, it demonstrates approaches that will help you understand and enforce (or eliminate) the assumptions on which your solution is based, and to improve its robustness. Ultimately, the book teaches you how to think and develop defensively, and how to proactively identify and eliminate potential vulnerabilities in T-SQL code.

This book should be read by anyone who cares about the security and privacy of their online information, and wants to know how to take steps to protect it … and that should be everyone. This book should be read by anyone who wants to “do the right thing” and ensure that they do not inadvertently compromise their employer’s, or their own, sensitive information … and that should be everyone.
Modern corporations do their best to hammer home the message of security through training, communications, and outright begging. The message often falls on deaf ears, not because employees want to make their workplaces unsafe, but rather, because the topic is so complex and wide-ranging that it simply is overwhelming. As an information security professional, it is their charge to make the online world safer for all of us. None of us tolerates a crime spree in our neighborhood. Likewise, we should not tolerate the current crime wave that is sweeping the Internet, one which truly threatens to stifle the e-commerce and e-communications that we have come to know and rely on.

Effective design is at the heart of everything from software development to engineering to architecture. But what do we really know about the design process? What leads to effective, elegant designs? The Design of Designaddresses these questions. These new essays by Fred Brooks contain extraordinary insights for designers in every discipline. Brooks pinpoints constants inherent in all design projects and uncovers processes and patterns likely to lead to excellence. Drawing on conversations with dozens of exceptional designers, as well as his own experiences in several design domains, Brooks observes that bold design decisions lead to better outcomes.
The author tracks the evolution of the design process, treats collaborative and distributed design, and illuminates what makes a truly great designer. He examines the nuts and bolts of design processes, including budget constraints of many kinds, aesthetics, design empiricism, and tools, and grounds this discussion in his own real-world examples—case studies ranging from home construction to IBM’s Operating System/360. Throughout, Brooks reveals keys to success that every designer, design project manager, and design researcher should know.

Pro JavaScript with MooTools is unlike any other JavaScript book on the market today. While similar books focus on either JavaScript as a language of the browser or how to use JavaScript Frameworks, Pro JavaScript with MooTools fills the gap between these topics and moves beyond—exploring the advanced features of JavaScript and how the MooTools framework uses these features to further improve the language itself.
The book itself takes a unique three-pronged approach. It first walks you through the advanced features of JavaScript and the MooTools framework, including native augmentation and type creation, a comprehensive discussion of JavaScript functions, Object-Oriented programming with native JavaScript and MooTools Classes, and the MooTools Class internals. You’ll then learn all about Javascript in the DOM: the Elements classes and its internals, the MooTools Event system, Selector engines and MooTools Slick, Ajax and the Request Object, and Animation and the Fx classes.
The final section really sets the book apart from all others, as it discusses JavaScript outside the browsers. You’ll take an in-depth look at CommonJS and MooTools, using MooTools outside the browser to build ORM, creating simple CommonJS applications via the MooTools Deck framework, and creating complex Server-Side applications using Raccoon.
What you’ll learn
- How MooTools augments natives and creates new types via the Type constructor and how it uses the advanced features of JavaScript functions to extend the language.
- All about Object-Oriented programming in native JavaScript and MooTools Class counterpart—the internals of the Class Type and other special object-oriented features that the framework adds to the language.
- How MooTools improves the DOM API via Element and the Events Types; and how Slick, the MooTools selector engine, uses advanced JavaScript features to create a fast and easy way to control the DOM.
- How MooTools wraps the native XMLHttpRequest to create a truly cross-browser implementation and how the MooTools Fx classes create smooth, powerful animations for the browser.
- About the CommonJS initiative and MooTools support for it and how MooTools can be used without the DOM to create an ORM that talks to a database outside the browser.
- About Deck and Raccoon: two simple, yet powerful, frameworks built atop MooTools that enable you to create server-side JavaScript applications.

This second edition of Foundations of Python Network Programming targets Python 2.5 through Python 2.7, the most popular production versions of the language. Python has made great strides since Apress released the first edition of this book back in the days of Python 2.3. The advances required new chapters to be written from the ground up, and others to be extensively revised.
You will learn fundamentals like IP, TCP, DNS and SSL by using working Python programs; you will also be able to familiarize yourself with infrastructure components like memcached and message queues. You can also delve into Network server designs, and compare threaded approaches with asynchronous event-based solutions.
But the biggest change is this edition’s expanded treatment of the web. The HTTP protocol is covered in extensive detail, with each feature accompanied by sample Python code. You can use your HTTP protocol expertise by studying an entire chapter on screen scraping and you can then test lxml and BeautifulSoup against a real-world web site. The chapter on web application programming now covers both the WSGI standard for component interoperability, as well as modern web frameworks like Django.
Finally, all of the old favorites from the first edition are back: E-mail protocols like SMTP, POP, and IMAP get full treatment, as does XML-RPC. You can still learn how to code Python network programs using the Telnet and FTP protocols, but you are likely to appreciate the power of more modern alternatives like the paramiko SSH2 library. If you are a Python programmer who needs to learn the network, this is the book that you want by your side.

This book provides a cutting edge introduction to market risk management for Hedge Funds, Hedge Funds of Funds, and the numerous new indices and clones launching coming to market on a near daily basis. It will present the fundamentals of quantitative risk measures by analysing the range of Value-at-Risk (VaR) models used today, addressing the robustness of each model, and looking at new risk measures available to more effectively manage risk in a hedge fund portfolio.
The book begins by analysing the current state of the hedge fund industry - at the ongoing institutionalisation of the market, and at its latest developments. It then moves on to examine the range of risks, risk controls, and risk management strategies currently employed by practitioners, and focuses on particular risks embedded in the more classic investment strategies such as Long/Short, Convertible Arbitrage, Fixed Income Arbitrage, Short selling and risk arbitrage. Addressed along side these are other risks common to hedge funds, including liquidity risk, leverage risk and counterparty risk.
The book then moves on to examine more closely two models which provide the underpinning for market risk management in investment today - Style Value-at-Risk and Implicit Value-at-Risk. As well as full quantitative analysis and backtesting of each methodology, the authors go on to propose a new style model for style and implicit Var, complete with analysis, real life examples and backtesting. The authors then go on to discuss annualisation issues and risk return before moving on to propose a new model based on the authors own Best Choice Implicit VaR approach, incorporating quantitative analysis, market results and backtesting and also its potential for new hedge fund clone products.

The number of security countermeasures against user-land exploitation is on the rise. Because of this, kernel exploitation is becoming much more popular among exploit writers and attackers. Playing with the heart of the operating system can be a dangerous game: This book covers the theoretical techniques and approaches needed to develop reliable and effective kernel-level exploits and applies them to different operating systems (Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, and Windows). Kernel exploits require both art and science to achieve. Every OS has its quirks and so every exploit must be molded to fully exploit its target. This book discusses the most popular OS families-UNIX derivatives, Mac OS X, and Windows-and how to gain complete control over them. Concepts and tactics are presented categorically so that even when a specifically detailed exploit has been patched, the foundational information that you have read will help you to write a newer, better attack or a more concrete design and defensive structure.
- Covers a range of operating system families - UNIX derivatives, Mac OS X, Windows
- Details common scenarios such as generic memory corruption (stack overflow, heap overflow, etc.) issues, logical bugs and race conditions
- Delivers the reader from user-land exploitation to the world of kernel-land (OS) exploits/attacks, with a particular focus on the steps that lead to the creation of successful techniques, in order to give to the reader something more than just a set of tricks

For as long as there has been something to communicate between two persons there has been data. Today, vast volumes of it are gathered about almost every individual and business. It is the information that we provide when we sign up for an account at our favorite website, fill out a job application, or apply for a mortgage.
These valuable, often sensitive, data assets are stored in a SQL Server database, and entrusted to the Database Administrator, who must use every weapon and strategy at his or her disposal in the “war” to protect this sensitive data from would-be hackers, phishers, rumor mongers and identity thieves. Encryption is one of the primary weapons with which this battle can be won, and yet it is treated with trepidation by many, who fear that it will prove “just another way for data to be lost” or “an unjustifiable cost on performance”.
This book holds the key to “encryption without fear”. In it, the author goes way beyond the usual demonstration of the SQL Server cryptographic functions. He explains how to assess and categorize data elements according to sensitivity, regulate access to the various categories of data using database roles, views and stored procedures, and then how to implement an efficient and secure data architecture using the available SQL encryption features, such as cell-level encryption, transparent data encryption and one-way encryption.
At each stage the author covers not only how the features work, but also described the situations when they are and are not suitable, and at all times stresses the steps that must be taken to ensure that the solution is maintainable.
Table of Contents
-
- Chapter 01: Understanding Sensitive Data
- Chapter 02: Data Classification and Roles
- Chapter 03: Schema Architecture Strategies
- Chapter 04: Encryption Basics for SQL Server
- Chapter 05: Cell-level Encryption
- Chapter 06: Transparent Data Encryption
- Chapter 07: One-way Encryption
- Chapter 08: Obfuscation
- Chapter 09: HoneyCombing a Database
- Chapter 10: Layering Solutions
- Appendix A: Views and Functions Reference

The edge and surface inspection is one of the most important and most challenging tasks in quality assessment in industrial production. Typical defects are cracks, inclusions, pores, surface flakings, partial or complete tears of material surface and s.o. These defects can occur through defective source material or through extreme strain during machining process. Detection of defects on a materialc surface can be complicated due to extremely varying degrees of material brightness or due to shadow areas, caused by the folding of the surface. Furthermore, impurities or surface discolourations can lead to artefacts that can be detected as pseudo-defects.
The brightness conditions on the edge of material defects are interpreted as a Gauss distribution of a radiation and used for a physical model. Basing on this model, an essentially new set of adaptive edge-based algorithms was developed. Using these methods, different types of defects can be detected, without the measurements being dependent on local or global brightness conditions of the image taken. The new adaptive edge-based algorithms allow a defect detection on different materials, like metal, ceramics, plastics and stone.

Book Description
An accessible and step-by-step approach to using VB.NET and XML enterprise application development
XML is a tool for interacting with, describing, and transporting data between machines across networks and across the Internet-perfectly suited for Microsoft’s .NET plan to fully integrate the Internet into distributed computing. By using real-world and fully-functional examples, this book quickly brings Visual Basic programmers and developers up to speed on XML for enterprise application development. The authors include an overview of XML and how it works with VB.NET, then explain how to use it to manipulate data in distributed environments.
Companion Web site at www.vb-helper.com features the complete working code for all the examples built in the book.
Microsoft Technologies
.NET Platform: The next big overhaul to Microsoft’s technologies that will bring enterprise distributed computing to the next level by fully integrating the Internet into the development platform. This will allow interaction between any machine, on any platform, and on any device.
Visual Basic.NET: The update to this popular visual programming language will offer greater Web functionality, more sophisticated object-oriented language features, links to Microsoft’s new common runtime, and a new interface.
ASP.NET: A programming framework (formerly known as Active Server Pages) for building powerful Web-based enterprise applications; can be programmed using VB.NET or C#.
C#: Microsoft’s new truly object-oriented programming language that builds on the strengths of C++ and the ease of Visual Basic; promises to give Sun’s Java a run for its money.
