SAP R/3-Basissystem . Release 4.6 Addison-Wesley( 2001-02-15) | ISBN: 3827317274 | German | PDF | 10.52 Mb | 410 pages
--Horst-Joachim Hoffmann

Uwe Cantner, Elias Dinopoulos, Robert F. Lanzillotti, "Entrepreneurship, the New Economy and Public Policy: Schumpeterian Perspectives" Springer; 1 edition (December 22, 2004) | ISBN: 3540226133 | 345 pages | PDF | 4,8 Mb
This volume contains a collection of papers concerned with Schumpeterian perspectives on entrepreneurship, the New Economy and public policy. Those topics are firmly rooted in the more general discussion of technological change, industry evolution, industrial organization, public policy, and economic growth. These research branches have shown an increasing specialization during the last decades. A connecting principle nevertheless is the Schumpeterian approach on the one hand, but also the principles of evolutionary economics on the other hand. The various contributions of this volume demonstrate the high relevance and thought-provoking nature of Schumpeterian and Evolutionary Economics and its policy relevance.

Nuala C. Johnson, Ireland, the Great War and the Geography of RemembranceCambridge University Press | ISBN 0521826160 | 2003 | PDF | 5 MB | 207 pages
Nuala C. Johnson explores the complex relationship between social memory and space in the representation of war in Ireland. The Irish experience of the Great War, and its commemoration, is the location of Dr Johnson's sustained and pioneering examination of the development of memorial landscapes, and her study represents a major contribution both to cultural geography and to the historiography of remembrance.
Attractively illustrated, this book combines theoretical perspectives with original primary research showing how memory literally took place in post-1918 Ireland, and the various conflicts and struggles that were both a cause and effect of this process. Of interest to scholars in a number of disciplines, Ireland, The Great War and The Geography of Remembrance shows powerfully how Irish efforts to collectively remember the Great War were constantly in dialogue with issues surrounding the national question, and the memorials themselves bore witness to these tensions and ambiguities.

Collecting Spatial Data: Optimum Design of Experiments for Random Fields Springer (2007-09) | ISBN: 3540311742 | 242 pages | PDF | 1.97Mb
The book is concerned with the statistical theory for locating spatial sensors. It bridges the gap between spatial statistics and optimum design theory. After introductions to those two fields the topics of exploratory designs and designs for spatial trend and variogram estimation are treated. Special attention is devoted to describing new methodologies to cope with the problem of correlated observations. A great number of relevant references are collected and put into a common perspective. The theoretical investigations are accompanied by a practical example, the redesign of an Upper-Austrian air pollution monitoring network. A reader should be able to find respective theory and recommendations on how to efficiently plan a specific purpose spatial monitoring network. The third edition takes into account the rapid development in the area of spatial statistics by including new relevant research and references. The revised edition contains additional material on design for detecting spatial dependence and for estimating parametrized covariance functions.

Sperm Wars: Infidelity, Sexual Conflict, and Other Bedroom BattlesThunder's Mouth Press(2005-12-13) | ISBN: 1560258489 | 352 pages | PDF | 2.71Mb
Published to acclaim and controversy a decade ago, Sperm Wars is a revolutionary thesis about sex that turned centuries-old biological assumptions on their head. Evolution has programmed men to conquer and monopolize women while women, without ever knowing they are doing it, seek the best genetic input on offer from potential sexual partners. In this book, best-selling author Robin Baker reveals these new facts of life: ten percent of children are not fathered by their "fathers;" less than one percent of a man’s sperm is capable of fertilizing anything (the rest is there to fight off all other men’s sperm); "smart" vaginal mucus encourages some sperm but blocks others; and a woman is far more likely to conceive through a casual fling than through sex with her regular partner. It’s no wonder that Sperm Wars is a classic of popular science writing that will surprise, entertain, and even shock.

David L. Howell, Geographies of Identity in Nineteenth-Century JapanUniversity of California Press | ISBN 0520240855 | 2005 | PDF | 1 MB | 272 pages
In this pioneering study, David L. Howell looks beneath the surface structures of the Japanese state to reveal the mechanism by which markers of polity, status, and civilization came together over the divide of the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Howell illustrates how a short roster of malleable, explicitly superficial customs--hairstyle, clothing, and personal names-- served to distinguish the "civilized" realm of the Japanese from the "barbarian" realm of the Ainu in the Tokugawa era. Within the core polity, moreover, these same customs distinguished members of different social status groups from one another, such as samurai warriors from commoners, and commoners from outcasts.

Understanding Human Knowledge: Philosophical EssaysOxford University Press, USA (2002-10-22) | ISBN: 0199252130 | 272 pages | PDF | 0.22Mb
Barry Stroud has since the 1970s been one of the most original contributors to the philosophical study of human knowledge; this volume presents the best of his essays in this area. More than half of the essays are concerned with identifying clearly the question or issue that philosophical theories of knowledge are meant to answer, and with the role of philosophical scepticism in giving the right kind of sense to that question. Another series of essays explores possibilities within the broadly Kantian or 'transcendental' project of establishing the distinctive status and therefore special invulnerability of certain aspects of our conception of the world. Stroud's discussions of these fundamental questions are essential reading for anyone interested in the possibility of philosophical theories of knowledge.

Culture and ImperialismVintage (1994-05-31) | ISBN: 0679750541 | 416 pages | PDF | 67.2Mb
Edward Said makes one of the strongest cases ever for the aphorism, "the pen is mightier than the sword." This is a brilliant work of literary criticism that essentially becomes political science. Culture and Imperialism demonstrates that Western imperialism's most effective tools for dominating other cultures have been literary in nature as much as political and economic. He traces the themes of 19th- and 20th-century Western fiction and contemporary mass media as weapons of conquest and also brilliantly analyzes the rise of oppositional indigenous voices in the literatures of the "colonies." Said would argue that it's no mere coincidence that it was a Victorian Englishman, Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton, who coined the phrase "the pen is mightier . . ." Very highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand how cultures are dominated by words, as well as how cultures can be liberated by resuscitating old voices or creating new voices for new times.

The Cultures of GlobalizationDuke University Press (1998-12) | ISBN: 0822321696| 393 pages | PDF | 0.83 Mb
A pervasive force that evades easy analysis, globalization has come to represent the export and import of culture, the speed and intensity of which has increased to unprecedented levels in recent years. The Cultures of Globalization presents an international panel of intellectuals who consider the process of globalization as it concerns the transformation of the economic into the cultural and vice versa; the rise of consumer culture around the world; the production and cancellation of forms of subjectivity; and the challenges it presents to national identity, local culture, and traditional forms of everyday life.
Discussing overlapping themes of transnational consequence, the contributors to this volume describe how the global character of technology, communication networks, consumer culture, intellectual discourse, the arts, and mass entertainment have all been affected by recent worldwide trends. Appropriate to such diversity of material, the authors approach their topics from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including those of linguistics, sociology, economics, anthropology, and the law. Essays examine such topics as free trade, capitalism, the North and South, Eurocentrism, language migration, art and cinema, social fragmentation, sovereignty and nationhood, higher education, environmental justice, wealth and poverty, transnational corporations, and global culture. Bridging the spheres of economic, political, and cultural inquiry, The Cultures of Globalization offers crucial insights into many of the most significant changes occurring in today’s world.

Encyclopedia of Diasporas: Immigrant and Refugee Cultures Around the World. Volume I: Overviews and Topics; Volume II: Diaspora CommunitiesSpringer (2004-11-30) | ISBN: 0306483211| 1242 pages | DJVU | 10.3Mb
Immigration is a topic that is as important among anthropologists as it is the general public. Almost every culture has experienced adaptation and assimilation when immigrating to a new country and culture; usually leaving for what is perceived as a "better life". Not only does this diaspora change the country of adoption, but also the country of origin. Many large nations in the world have absorbed, and continue to absorb, large numbers of immigrants. The foreseeable future will see a continuation of large-scale immigration, as many countries experience civil war and secessionist pressures. Currently, there is no reference work that describes the impact upon the immigrants and the immigrant societies relevant to the world's cultures and provides an overview of important topics in the world's diasporas.
The encyclopedia consists of two volumes covering three main sections: Diaspora Overviews covers over 20 ethnic groups that have experienced voluntary or forced immigration. These essays discuss the history behind the social, economic, and political reasons for leaving the original countries, and the cultures in the new places; Topics discusses the impact and assimilation that the immigrant cultures experience in their adopted cultures, including the arts they bring, the struggles they face, and some of the cities that are in the forefront of receiving immigrant cultures; Diaspora Communities include over 60 portraits of specific diaspora communities. Each portrait follows a standard outline to facilitate comparisons. The Encyclopedia of Diasporas can be used both to gain a general understanding of immigration and immigrants, and to find out about particular cultures, topics and communities. It will prove of great value to researchers and students, curriculum developers, teachers, and government officials. It brings together the disciplines of anthropology, social studies, political studies, international studies, and immigrant and immigration studies.

Democracy and Difference Princeton University Press | ISBN 0691044783 | 1996-07-08 | PDF | 19.8 MB | 352 pages
The global trend toward democratization of the last two decades has been accompanied by the resurgence of various politics of "identity/difference." From nationalist and ethnic revivals in the countries of east and central Europe to the former Soviet Union, to the politics of cultural separatism in Canada, and to social movement politics in liberal western-democracies, the negotiation of identity/difference has become a challenge to democracies everywhere. This volume brings together a group of distinguished thinkers who rearticulate and reconsider the foundations of democratic theory and practice in the light of the politics of identity/difference.
In Part One Jürgen Habermas, Sheldon S. Wolin, Jane Mansbridge, Seyla Benhabib, Joshua Cohen, and Iris Marion Young write on democratic theory. Part Two--on equality, difference, and public representation--contains essays by Anne Phillips, Will Kymlicka, Carol C. Gould, Jean L. Cohen, and Nancy Fraser; and Part Three--on culture, identity, and democracy--by Chantal Mouffe, Bonnie Honig, Fred Dallmayr, Joan B. Landes, and Carlos A. Forment. In the last section Richard Rorty, Robert A. Dahl, Amy Gutmann, and Benjamin R. Barber write on whether democracy needs philosophical foundations.

Introductory Guide to Post-structuralism and Post-modernism, AnLongman | ISBN 0745013600 | 1993 | PDF | 14.8 MB | 224 pages
The best introduction to post-modern theoreticians. Sarup is very clear about the authors he is writing about, even if the authors are known to be obscure on occasion. The theoretical ambition of the writers is very well portrayed, and he brings to surface the main differences between Lacan, Derrida, Foucault, Cixous, Lyotard and Baudrillard (and more) as well as showing the common thrust of the two movements (post-modernism and post-structuralism). The reading level of the book is accessible to any undergraduate student.

Medical Microbiology has been improved and updated to keep it at the forefront of microbiological teaching practice. The clinically relevant, systems-based approach has been retained so as to emphasise the microbiology of the agents causing disease and the diseases affecting individual organ systems.
Over 250 color diagrams explain difficult concepts while color clinical photographs appear alongside the microbiology, stressing the clinical relevance of the science.
This book opens with an expanded basic introduction to viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Then the immunology of the host is considered (again in more detail than in previous editions) before looking at the complex conflicts between host and invading agent. The clinical manifestations of these conflicts are explored within a systems-based context before concluding with a re-organised survey of microbiological diagnosis and control.
Throughout, attractive design features are used to highlight core information and make study and review that bit easier: Chapter Introductions, Key Facts Boxes, case-based Review Questions, new Microbiology Lessons and Summary Headings throughout make Medical Microbiology a pleasure to read.

From Chapter 1 "Depression, like many other mental disorders, is characterised by the presence of a number of symptoms which are changeable over time." Among these symptoms are a depressed mood and a loss of interest; physical and cognitive changes may also occur. Because of difficulties in diagnosis (and varied criteria) only estimates in the global number of cases of depression can be made. Some estimates put it in front of chronic heart disease as a health problem and cause of death. This revised edition covers developments in diagnosis, theraphy, prognosis, economic evaluation and quality improvement. Provides accompanying commentaries by an outstanding line up of contributors. Covers developments in diagnosis, therapy, prognosis, economic evaluation and quality improvement. Provides an unbiased and reliable reference point.

Psychology and Human Nature problematizes what psychology usually takes for granted-the meaning of the psyche or 'human nature'. The author provides a coherent account of many of the major schools of thought in psychology and its related disciplines, including: sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, radical behaviourism, existentialism, discursive psychology and postmodernism. For each approach he considers the claims or assumptions being made about 'human nature', especially regarding issues of consciousness, the self, the body, other people and the physical world.
Psychology and Human Nature will be essential reading for all students of psychology.
The Psychology Focus series provides students with a new focus on key topic areas in psychology. Each short book presents clear, in-depth coverage of a discrete area with many applied examples: Assumes no prior knowledge of psychology; Has been written by an experienced teacher; Has chapter summaries, annotated further reading and a glossary of key terms.

This volume is a comprehensive roadmap to the burgeoning area of affective sciences, which now spans several disciplines. The Handbook brings together, for the first time, the various strands of inquiry and latest research in the scientific study of the relationship between the mechanisms of the brain and the psychology of mind. In recent years, scientists have made considerable advances in understanding how brain processes shape emotions and are changed by human emotion. Drawing on a wide range of neuroimaging techniques, neuropsychological assessment, and clinical research, scientists are beginning to understand the biological mechanisms for emotions. As a result, researchers are gaining insight into such compelling questions as: How do people experience life emotionally? Why do people respond so differently to the same experiences? What can the face tell us about internal states? How does emotion in significant social relationships influence health? Are there basic emotions common to all humans? This volume brings together the most eminent scholars in the field to present, in sixty original chapters, the latest research and theories in the field. The book is divided into ten sections: Neuroscience; Autonomic Psychophysiology; Genetics and Development; Expression; Components of Emotion; Personality; Emotion and Social Processes; Adaptation, Culture, and Evolution; Emotion and Psychopathology; and Emotion and Health. This major new volume will be an invaluable resource for researchers that will define affective sciences for the next decade.

The book’s purpose is to explain from the development of life on earth to the evolution of diversity. It is this diversity that led, almost automatically to the development of pathogens and predators. The relationship of pathogens and host lead to the development of antibiotics and resistance mechanism. Man has extended this process and we now have a situation in which new antibiotics only are effective for a short time. If we are to create long term antibiotics we must design them with this history in mind.
Understanding antibiotic chemotherapy at the ecological level is necessary for more permanent advances in development and in the usage of antibiotic agents both old, new, and in the future.
This book is indented for students at various levels that will be the microbiology researchers in the time to come. Also microbiology professors, particularly those teaching medical microbiology as well as physicians administering antibiotics daily and researchers in the pharmaceutical industry may find this book useful.

Book Description:
Most people believe their emotions are automatic reactions to events. Events happen and trigger emotions, and that is all there is to it. Few realize that their emotions are determined by what they think, by how they interpret the events, and not by the events themselves. As Epstein demonstrates throughout the book, this insight provides a powerful tool for controlling emotions and becoming the type of person one wants to be. To a considerable extent this book stresses the techniques of cognitive therapy and how they can be utilized in everyday life. Epstein goes beyond this, however, to provide a theory of personality based on a new and effective view of the unconscious. Many readers will find the "how-to" features sufficient for their purposes; professionals and students in psychology, however, will find the principles set forth useful in their own teaching and research.

~ Misleading ~
I'm not going to rehash the story's plot b/c it's been done. Admittedly, I started reading this book without knowing it had a prequel. The back cover was misleading; I thought it was supposed to be about Ed Ramsey and the woman he loved, Kelly. Unfortunately, their love paled in comparison to Grigori and Marisa's relationship. Kelly seemed like a secondary character throughout the novel while Marisa, Gregori and Ramsey were the front-runners.

Truly terrible
I'd love to see more reviews about the actual book instead of being critical of the readers reviews...anyhoo...I'm afraid I was bored to tears, I skimmed it, hated the characters and lack of anything significant occurring in between the pages. I'm afraid to try any other titles from this author, I won't be duped again!

Book Description:
The first book to tackle the application of smart polymers in bioseparation and bioprocessing, Smart Polymers: Applications in Biotechnology and Biomedicine broke new ground in this challenging field. Completely revised, updated, and following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the second edition is poised to take its place as a premier reference in this field. This new edition considers those polymers in which a highly nonlinear response of a smart polymer to small changes in the external medium is of critical importance for the successful functioning of the system. The systems discussed are based on soluble/insoluble transition of smart polymers in aqueous solution, on conformational transitions of the macromolecules physically attached or chemically grafted to a surface and on the shrinking/swelling of covalently cross-linked networks of macromolecules, i.e. smart hydrogels. The book focuses on the theory describing the behavior of smart polymers in solution, as gels, and when grafted to surfaces. It provides solid, quantitative descriptions and reliable guidelines, reflecting the maturation of the field and the demand for the development of new smart polymer systems. The coverage highlights smart gels and especially fast responding and macroporous gels, as these gels pave the way to different applications of smart polymers in the areas ofbioseparation, drug release, and microfluidics. With contributions from leading researchers as well as extensive end-of-chapter references, this volume offers a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in the field and the potential for future developments.

In this sixth edition the authors continue to emphasize the immune system of humans and the immunologic basis of human disease. The bibliographies are still rather extensive but have the added intent of providing a pathway to “finding the right additional information. Many authors are new and the emphasis in some chapters has changed as might be expected in a fast-moving field such as immunology. Overall, however, this edition is similar to the previous one in content and emphasis. They faced an issue in this edition of how to handle infectious diseases in which, in most cases, the immune system was just doing “its thing. The major question in infectious diseases for the immunologist is to understand its limitations and compromises in an agent related fashion and to understand how infection contributes to the development of immunologic diseases. Consequently, they have included overviews of how the immune system deals with microbes rather than, in most cases, discussing each disease entity separately.

Chemotherapy is the use of cytotoxic agents to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy dates back to the 1500s, when heavy metals were used systemically to treat cancers, and severe toxicity and limited cure were reported. Since then, a vast spectrum of antineoplastic drugs has been discovered to achieve cure, control, and palliation of many cancers. The new and improved changes in the drug approval process of the Food and Drug Administration have speeded the entry of novel drugs that have made chemotherapy a vital part of the cancer armamentarium. Chemotherapy remains the primary treatment for some malignancies and an adjunct to other treatment modalities (surgery, radiation, and immunotherapy). Unlike surgery and radiation, chemotherapy is distinguished by its systemic effects. Most of the drugs are transported by the bloodstream; most do not cross the blood–brain barrier and therefore cannot reach the central nervous system.

Book Description:
Although depression is the most common presentation of bipolar disorder, correct diagnosis generally requires a history of mania and thus presents a formidable challenge. This book provides clinicians with the necessary guidance to distinguish this illness and pursue an appropriate therapeutic course. It brings together a team of clinical investigators who offer cutting-edge research on the topic and address the most critical concerns regarding its treatment.
Bipolar Depression first introduces a hierarchical model for diagnosis to allow the clinician to distinguish between bipolar and unipolar depression, addressing problems of misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis as well as differentiating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder. Early chapters review the neurobiology and genetics of this highly heritable condition, presenting studies of neurotransmitter function and brain imaging studies and documenting the susceptibility of specific chromosomes as loci for bipolar disorder. Other chapters address the particular issues of bipolar depression in children, for whom a diagnosis is especially problematic, and suicide, focusing on the need for assessment during both acute and maintenance treatment with interventions appropriate to a patient's symptoms and history. Bipolar Depression offers critiques of specific treatment approaches:
Lithium and antiepileptic drugs: featuring a review of the most recent research on the use of lithium, in which higher doses are shown to be effective, plus coverage of lamotrigine, valproic acid, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, and topiramate.
Antidepressants: offering new perspectives on a complex field, including a discussion of the randomized clinical trial literature and observational studies on their use, and citing cautions regarding side effects.
Antipsychotics: evaluating the difference between first- and second-generation medications and discussing their role in controlling acute depressions.
Novel approaches to treatment: including the use of atypical neuroleptics, electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, ketogenic diet, omega-3 fatty acids, myo-inositol, and dopamine agonists.
Psychological interventions: focusing on the inclusion of cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal social rhythm therapy for nonmelancholic depressions in patients who had previously received psychoeducation.
Despite the past decade's advances in practice and research, there remains much room for progress in understanding and treating bipolar depression. This book blazes a trail toward that goal, opening new doors in recognizing differences between bipolar and unipolar forms of depression while offering both researchers and clinicians key insights into this troubling illness.

G. Ronald Murphy, S.J., The Owl, the Raven, and the Dove: The Religious Meaning of the Grimms' Magic Fairy TalesOxford University Press | ISBN 0195136071 | 2000 | PDF | 11 MB | 204 pages
The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm is a national treasure of the German people. Among its 210 stories there are a dozen or so which are such masterpieces that they have become a treasure that belongs to the childhood and the adulthood of the wholeworld. Ever since Bruno Bettelheim presented his psychoanalytic interpretation of the tales more than twenty years ago, scholars have been fascinated by the mysterious nature and continuing influence of these stories on the human imagination. One of the most intriguing suggestions originally made by Bettelheim was that underneath the psychological meaning of the stories he found hints of another, deeper layer of religious meaning, which he thought deserved serious attention. This suggestion has largely gone unexamined by contemporary scholarship. This book is an attempt to explore that fascinating challenge and delve into the religious roots of the tales' enchantment by studying them as the poetic expression of what the brothers Grimm thought they werefragments of ancient faith.

Book Description:
This exceptionally practical and insightful new text explores the emerging field of comparative-integrative psychoanalysis. It provides an invaluable framework for approaching the currently fractious state of the psychoanalytic discipline, divided as it is into diverse schools of thought, presenting many conceptual challenges. Author Brent Willock considers complex clinical data, making astute inferences and evaluating them with respect to alternative hypotheses, as he articulates the significant problem in the nature of the evolution of analytic thought. Moving beyond the usual borders of psychoanalysis, Willock usefully draws on insights from neighboring disciplines to shed additional light on the core issue.
Comparative-Integrative Psychoanalysis is divided into two sections for organizational clarity. Section One is an intriguing investigation into the nature of thought and its intrinsic problems. It convincingly builds a case for the need, after a century of disciplinary development, to move beyond delineated schools, and proposes a method for achieving this goal. The succeeding section elaborates this desideratum in detail, exploring its implications with respect to theory, organizations, practice, and pedagogy. This second portion of the volume is most applicable to everyday concerns with improving work in the field, be it in the consulting room, classroom, or in and between various psychoanalytic organizations.

Book Description:
The prospect that the psychiatric profession has hurt rather than helped many of its patients is incredibly disheartening; however, wrong diagnoses and improper treatment are all too common errors within the field. Author René Muller presents a revealing look into how psychiatry has failed a great majority of patients, all the while recognizing the valiant efforts made by psychiatrists who maintain their integrity and serve their patients well. The result is an enlightening critique of the professionone that pits criticism of psychiatry’s current biological reduction and exaggerated promises against the accumulated wisdom of a profession that has struggled for a century and a half to understand and help those with mental illness.
Muller’s analysis is drawn from the experience of having evaluated scores of emergency room patients over the course of 10 years. The patients’ stories reveal that many of these individuals have been diminished or damaged as a result of a wrong diagnosis and improper medication. Individual chapters throughout Doing Psychiatry Wrong explains how and why the practice of psychiatry has changed, how psychiatry mistreats depression, misdiagnoses of schizophrenia, and, finally, how psychiatry can be practiced so that all patients are helped by the medical profession rather than harmed.

Book Description:
Over the past two decades, the use of medication combined with psychotherapy or psychoanalysis has shifted from an infrequent occurrence to common practice. Concurrently, attitudes toward medication have changed from viewing this intervention as disruptive or as a last resort to a welcome aid in the psychotherapeutic or psychoanalytic process. However, this relatively rapid change has created difficulty in the integration of medication use into the psychotherapeutic setting. Psychotherapy and Medication is an exceptionally valuable and timely volume that provides psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and other mental health professionals with information on how to work with medication theoretically, clinically, and technically in the context of a psychotherapeutic or psychoanalytic treatment.

David Papineau, S.J., The Roots of Reason: Philosophical Essays on Rationality, Evolution, and ProbabilityOxford University Press | ISBN 0199288712 | 2006 | PDF | 2 MB | 253 pages
David Papineau presents a controversial view of human reason, portraying it as a normal part of the natural world, and drawing on the empirical sciences to illuminate its workings. In these six interconnected essays he offers a fresh approach to some long-standing problems. Papineau rejects the contemporary orthodoxy that genuine thought hinges on some species of non-natural normativity. He explores the evolutionary histories of theoretical and practical rationality, indicating ways in which capacities underlying human reasoning have been selected for their biological advantages. He then looks at the connection between decision and probability, explaining how good decisions need to be informed by causal as well as probabilistic facts. Finally he defends the radical view that a satisfactory understanding of decision-making is only possible within a specific interpretation of quantum mechanics. By placing the subject in its scientific context, Papineau shows how human rationality plays an explicable role in the functioning of the natural world.

Bitter Nemesis: The Intimate History of Strychnine Stationary Office | Pages: 320 | 2007-07-16 | ISBN: 1420053159 | 5 MB
Encouraged by the medicinal success of quinine, early 19th century scientists hoped strychnine, another plant alkaloid with remarkable properties, might also become a new weapon against disease. Physicians tried for over a century, despite growing evidence to the contrary, to treat everything from paralysis to constipation with it. But strychnine proved only to be disappointingly deadly-relegating its fate almost entirely to animal control, the dangerous adulteration of foods, and criminal exploits. The NOTORIOUS and TRUE story of how a POISONOUS alkaloid... Bitter Nemesis: The Intimate History of Strychnine presents a scholarly and compelling history of this fascinating chemical substance from its discovery to present times. A renowned editor for the Dictionary of Natural Products, Dr. John Buckingham fuses his eclectic interests into an extraordinary mix of original research spanning the realms of history, medicine, literature, chemistry, and forensics. ...Changed the course of HISTORY! Uncovering details and logistics from the earliest experiments performed in an era when proper scientific trials for testing new drugs were still in their infancy, the author explores strychnine's trial-and-error contributions to scientific, medical, and forensic developments. He also investigates historical milestones and the perception of strychnine in popular culture-including criminal notoriety, accidental misuse, and new claims of strychnine's benefits that extend through to the present day. Juxtaposing the real trials, mistrials, and persistent curiosity associated with one of history's most notorious pharmaceutical failures, Bitter Nemesis offers rare insight into the anarchic, yet inspired landscape, practices, and legacy of 19th century science.

Plato, edited by Catalin Partenie, Selected Myths (Oxford Paperback Reference)Oxford University Press | ISBN 0192805088 | 2004 | PDF | 1 MB | 205 pages
'Once upon a time there were just the gods; mortal beings did not yet exist.' We are used to thinking of myths as stories, and modern myths as made up and fictitious. For the ancient Greeks, however, a myth was a story that unveiled reality, and for Plato, myth-maker as well as myth-teller, a myth could tell us something important about ourselves and our world. The ultimate purpose of Plato's myths is to help us live a better life, and to teach philosophical truths in a form we can most easily understand.
This volume brings together ten of the most celebrated Platonic myths, from eight of Plato's dialogues ranging from the early Protagoras and Gorgias to the late Timaeus and Critias. They include the famous myth of the cave from Republic as well as 'The Judgement of Souls' and 'The Birth of Love'. Each myth is a self-contained story, prefaced by a short explanatory note, while the introduction considers Plato's use of myth and imagery. These myths are thought-provoking and profound, and together they provide an ideal introduction to Plato's philosophy.

Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer (US$129)Stationary Office | Pages: 650 | 2006-10 | ISBN: 1402060157 | 13 MB
The knowledge of molecular defects that lead to cancer is increasing rapidly. This has created a need for a textbook that conveys a comprehensive review of this topic. "Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer", describes molecular processes whose deregulation is important in the formation of tumours. The material is developed from basic cell signalling pathways to their roles in the clinical manifestation of specific cancers. Topics covered include molecular events intrinsic to tumour cells (leading to growth deregulation, extended lifespan, and the ability to invade surrounding tissue), protective mechanisms that prevent transformation (including DNA repair and epigenetic regulation), tumour-host interactions (with the endocrine system, the immune system, and blood vessel formation), and the underlying molecular defects of individual cancers. This book is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students and oncologists. It will also aid in drug discovery by identifying molecular targets. The growing insight generated by research into molecular carcinogenesis and the absence of comparably comprehensive and systematic textbooks makes this publication important and timely.

Severe Injuries to the Limbs: Staged Treatment Stationary Office | Pages: 224 | 2007-07-11 | ISBN: 3540698922 | 210 MB
Modern weapons and high-energy accidents inflict devastating damage to soft tissue and bone. The gold standard for stabilizing high-energy fractures is immediate external fixation followed by thorough debridement of soft tissues and dead bone and irrigation, since these injuries are always grossly contaminated. The next stage of treatment – the coverage of exposed bone by vital soft tissue and definitive skeletal stabilization and reconstruction – can be a complex surgical challenge. The protocol of staged external fixation developed by the authors: primary temporary unilateral tubular stabilization followed by definitive circular Ilizarov (hybrid) fixation, is outlined and comprehensively described in this book. The text provides guidelines for the young surgeon as well as the senior orthopedic trauma surgeon in staged definitive limb functional reconstruction. The rationale and advantages of a logical progression of surgical steps are explained and fully illustrated throughout, drawing from an archive of clinical photographs and X-ray documentation covering all steps of the treatment protocol in a large variety of complex cases, including extensive bone and soft tissue loss. This practical guide is based on the accumulated experience of 40 years in the treatment of severe injuries of the musculoskeletal system with grave tissue loss, and in particular war injuries. Emphasis is given to the proper attention and care of the soft tissues, sequential damage control, and the judicious staged use of appropriate external fixation.

amazon.com review:
| “ | Great dictionary. Much better than old Haim. My copy even has little tabs for each letter of the alphabet to speed indexing. Entries have the English translation, Farsi synonyms, and even more important for the English student, many examples of Farsi usage. You can learn a lot from each example. You will find few words in the modern Persian press that aren't here. | |
The complete dictionary is scanned at 150 dpi, converted in pdf and each double page provided with bookmarks (the first entry of the double page, in Persian) for a quick alphabetical overview.

K.A. Raaflaub, War and Peace in the Ancient World Blackwell Publishing Limited | ISBN 1405145269 | 2006 | PDF | 2 MB | 400 pages
This book is the first to focus on war and peace in the ancient world from a global perspective. 19 distinguished scholars, all of whom are experts in their fields, discuss different aspects of this fascinating subject in relation to a large number of early civilizations, from China and India through West Asia (Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Hittites, Israel, Persia, and early Islam) to the Mediterranean (Greece, Rome, and early Christianity) and the Americas (the Aztecs and the Iroquois Peace League).
The book demonstrates that ancient societies, no less than modern ones, suffered from the losses and destructions caused by war, and yearned for peace and prosperity. It offers remarkable insights into the different responses ancient societies developed in order not only to defend their territory, but also to avoid war and restore peace. Some early societies, the volume reveals, even developed an explicit public discourse on war and peace, and embedded peace in an ideological or religious framework.

David R. Nienhuis, Not By Paul Alone: The Formation of the Catholic Epistle Collection and Christian CanonBaylor University Press | ISBN 1932792716 | 2007 | PDF | 1 MB | 276 pages
"Not by Paul Alone" explores the historical reasons for the creation of the book of James and the implications for the creation of the Christian canon. Nienhuis makes a compelling case that James was written in the mid-second century and is, like 2 Peter, an attempt to provide a distinctive shape to the emerging New Testament. This book bolsters the claim that the Catholic Epistles not only have a distinct witness individually, but that collectively they are also a considered theological agenda within the Christian church.

Francis B.Gummere" Beowulf "PDF | ISBN 0979181313 | Year 1910 | 99 pages | English | 1.61 MB
" Tis better to die than to live in shame." The oldest existing story written in Old English, "Beowulf" is the classic tale of courage and honor. In the Great Hall of Hrothgar, King of the Danes, the warrior Beowulf, son of a Swedish King, wages battle with the monster Grendel.
Beowulf is an Old English heroic elegy, of anonymous authorship, assigned to the period 700-750, or to the time of composition of the only manuscript, circa 1010. At 3,183 lines, the poem is notable for its length. The poem is untitled in the manuscript, but has been known as Beowulf since the early 19th century. As the single major surviving work of Anglo-Saxon heroic poetry, the work in spite of dealing primarily with Scandinavian matters has risen to such prominence that it has become "England's national epos."
In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists: Grendel, who is destroying Heorot and its inhabitants in Denmark, Grendel's mother, and later in life (after he is King) a dragon.

Christopher Marlowe" The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus "PDF | ISBN not applicable | Year 1604 | 50 pages | English | 1.71 MB
The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus is a play by Christopher Marlowe, based on the Faust story (Faustus is Latin for Faust), in which a man sells his soul to the devil for power and knowledge.
On a deeper level, this play shows the decay of a person who chooses material gains
(by commanding the devils to suit his desires) over spiritual belief and in doing so,
loses his soul. Doctor Faustus was first published in 1604, eleven years after Marlowe's
death and at least twelve years after the first performance of the play.

Late-Life Depression by Stephen RooseOxford University Press | ISBN 0195152743 | 2004-07-02 | PDF | 412 Pages | 4.6 MB
Book Description:
We live in an aging world. Illnesses that are prevalent and cause significant morbidity and mortality in older people will consume an increasing share of health care resources. One such illness is depression. This illness has a particularly devastating impact in the elderly because it is often undiagnosed or inadequately treated. Depression not only has a profound impact on quality of life but it is associated with an increased risk of mortality from suicide and vascular disease. In fact for every medical illness studied, e.g. heart disease, diabetes, cancer, individuals who are depressed have a worse prognosis. Research has illuminated the physiological and behavioral effects of depression that accounts for these poor outcomes. The deleterious relationship between depression and other illnesses has changed the concept of late-life depression from a "psychiatric disorder" that is diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist to a common and serious disorder that is the responsibility of all physicians who care for patients over the age of 60. This is the first volume devoted to the epidemiology, phenomenology, psychobiology, treatment and consequences of late-life depression. Although much has been written about depressive disorders, the focus has been primarily on the illness as experienced in younger adults. The effects of aging on the brain, the physiological and behavioral consequences of recurrent depression, and the impact of other diseases common in the elderly, make late-life depression a distinct entity. There is a compelling need for a separate research program, specialized treatments, and a book dedicated to this disorder. This book will be invaluable to psychiatrists, gerontologists, clinical psychologists, social workers, students, trainees, and others who care for individuals over the age of sixty

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web by Louis Rosenfeld, Peter Morville Publisher: O'Reilly; 1 edition (February 1, 1998) | Language: English | ISBN:1565922824 | 202 pages | PDF | 5.1 MB
In Chapter 6 of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, the authors discuss the details of good search-engine design. In a bitingly humorous segment, they analyze a Web site's search-page results: "Let's say you're interested in knowing what the New Jersey sales tax is.... So you go to the State of New Jersey web site and search on sales tax. The 20 results are scored at either 84% or 82% relevant. Why does each document receive only one of two scores?... And what the heck makes a document 2% more relevant than another?"
With a swift and convincing stroke, the authors of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web tear down many entrenched ideas about Web design. Flashy animations are cool, they agree, as long as they don't aggravate the viewer. Nifty clickable icons are nice, but are their meanings universal? Is the search engine providing results that are useful and relevant? This book acts as a mirror and with careful questioning causes the reader to think through all the elements and decisions required for well-crafted Web design. --Jennifer Buckendorff
From Library Journal
Saul Wurman first used the term Information Architecture in his book of the same name. His book was mostly lots of really pretty pictures of media and webs compiled from a graphic design perspective; they were beautiful but never really dealt with the information end of things. Rosenfeld and Morville get it right. They show how to design manageable sites right the first time, sites built for growth. They discuss ideas of organization, navigation, labeling, searching, research, and conceptual design. This is almost common sense, which is often overlooked in the rush for cascading style sheets and XML. Essential reading for librarians and information managers who deal with the World Wide Web in any parts of their jobs.

chicken soup for the preteen soul PDF | 66 MB | 390 pages | Publisher: HCI (October 12, 2000) | Language: English | ISBN: 1558748008
Inspired by the many readers of Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul (one of many in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series), the authors decided to reach out to young people at that incredibly confusing, exciting chapter of life, the preteen years. Readers between the ages of 9 and 12 (give or take a year) sometimes felt that the book for kids was too young, while the edition for teens (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul) was too old. In this warm, supportive anthology of true stories by and about preteens, the very issues that seem so complicated and insurmountable are addressed with intelligence and openness. Divorce, violence, death, friendships, school, family, attitudes, changes, dreams... preteens have a lot to offer and a lot to learn on these subjects. Many of the brief essays, cartoons, quotations, and introductions are witty as well as wise and touching; readers might devour the book from start to finish, drop in for a story here and there, or focus on a concern that is most important at the moment. The preteen years seem to be the perfect time to reach kids, before they are lost in teen angst and coolness. And who better to learn from than their own peers? For some added incentive to read, celebrities such as Mia Hamm, Karl Malone, and 'N Sync have contributed essays as well. (Ages 9 to 13)

How Buildings Work: The Natural Order of ArchitectureOxford University Press | ISBN 019516198x | July 13, 2005 | 288 pages | PDF File | 14.5mb RAR
With its homespun drawings and offerings of architectural wisdom for lay readers, this book is like a Whole Earth Catalog building course. In this update of his 1980 edition, however, Allen (architecture, Yale) manages to explain with brevity and common sense "how buildings work." In the opening pages, he places the Earth in the solar system and defines our place on the planet. He then offers analyses of the effects of sun, wind, and cold on building design and location. By focusing primarily on housing, Allen lets readers clearly understand everything from lighting, comfort, and quiet to the basics of making a sturdy structure. He offers occasional but well-placed examples of non-Western design as well. And the illustrations, which look like 1970s instructions for macrame, somehow work.

The philosophy of Immanuel Kant is the watershed of modern thought, which irrevocably changed the landscape of the field and prepared the way for all the significant philosophical movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This volume, which complements The Cambridge Companion to Kant, covers every aspect of Kant’s philosophy, with a particular focus on his moral and political philosophy. It also provides detailed coverage of Kant’s historical context and of the enormous impact and influence that his work has had on the subsequent history of philosophy.
The bibliography also offers extensive and organized coverage of both classical and recent books on Kant. This volume thus provides the broadest and deepest introduction currently available on Kant and his place in modern philosophy, making accessible the philosophical enterprise of Kant to those coming to his work for the first time.

Anton LaVey , " The Satanic Bible"PDF | ISBN 0380015390 | Year 1969 | 93 pages | English | 2.58 MB
The Satanic Bible was written by Anton Szandor LaVey in 1969. It is a collection of essays, observations and basic Satanic rituals, and outlines LaVey's Satanic ideology. The author claims the influence of Machiavelli, Friedrich Nietzsche, Ragnar Redbeard and Ayn Rand among others.
LaVey attempts to shatter the classical depiction of Satanism as a cult of black mass and child sacrifice. As the smoke clears, he leads us through a surprisingly logical argument in favour of a life focused on self-indulgence. The Satanic Bible is less bible and more philosophy (with a few rituals thrown in to keep us entertained), but this philosophy is the backbone of a religion that, until LaVey entered the scene, was merely a myth of the Christian church

Edward Edelson, Francis Crick and James Watson: And the Building Blocks of LifeOxford University Press | ISBN 0195139712 | 2000 | PDF | 0.5 MB | 113 pages
The names of James Watson and Francis Crick are bound together forever because the scientific discovery they made was truly a joint enterprise. As Edward Edelson reveals in this intriguing biography, Watson and Crick were the first to describe the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, the molecule that carries our genes and determines everything from the color of our eyes to the shape of our fingernails. Even though Watson and Crick's collaboration lasted only a few years, their achievement was enough to tie their names together forever in the history of science and to establish a firm footing for what was then a radical new branch of science: molecular biology. In doing so, they paved the way for the early detection of genetic diseases such as sickle-cell anemia, and for new scientific leaps such as animal cloning.

Mircea Eliade, Cosmos and History:The Myth of the Eternal ReturnBollingen | ISBN 0691017778 | 1971 | PDF | 1 MB | 167 pages
This founding work of the history of religions, first published in English in 1954, secured the North American reputation of the romanian historian of religion and philosopher Mircea Eliade (1907-1986). Making reference to an astonishing number of cultures and drawing on scholarship published in no less than half a dozen European languages, Eliade's "The Myth of the Eternal Return" makes both intelligible and compelling the religious expressions and activities of a wide variety of archaic and "primitive" religious cultures. While acknowledging that a return to the "archaic" is no longer possible, Eliade passionately insists on the value of understanding this view in order to enrich our contemporary imagination of what it is to be human.
| “ | "The essential theme of my investigation bears on the image of himself formed by the man of the archaic societies and on the place that he assumes in the Cosmos. The chief difference between the man of the archaic and traditional societies and the man of the modern societies with their strong imprint of Judaeo-Christianity lies in the fact that the former feels himself indissolubly connected with the Cosmos and the cosmic rhythms, whereas the latter insists that he is connected only with History." | |

On Writing by Stephen KingPDF | ISBN 0743211537 | 2000 | 628 KB | 278 pages
Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King's On Writing really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists. The memoir is terrific stuff, a vivid description of how a writer grew out of a misbehaving kid. You're right there with the young author as he's tormented by poison ivy, gas-passing babysitters, uptight schoolmarms, and a laundry job nastier than Jack London's. It's a ripping yarn that casts a sharp light on his fiction.

Robert C. Solomon , Thinking about Feeling: Contemporary Philosophers on Emotions (Series in Affective Science)Oxford University Press | ISBN 0195153170 | 2004 | PDF | 1 MB | 308 pages
Philosophers since Aristotle have explored emotion, and the study of emotion has always been essential to the love of wisdom. In recent years Anglo-American philosophers have rediscovered and placed new emphasis on this very old discipline. The view that emotions are ripe for philosophical analysis has been supported by a considerable number of excellent publications. In this volume, Robert Solomon brings together some of the best Anglo-American philosophers now writing on the philosophy of emotion, with chapters from philosophers who have distinguished themselves in the field of emotion research and have interdisciplinary interests, particularly in the social and biological sciences.
The reader will find a lively variety of positions on topics such as the nature of emotion, the category of "emotion," the rationality of emotions, the relationship between an emotion and its expression, the relationship between emotion, motivation, and action, the biological nature versus social construction of emotion, the role of the body in emotion, the extent of freedom and our control of emotions, the relationship between emotion and value, and the very nature and warrant of theories of emotion. In addition, this book acknowledges that it is impossible to study the emotions today without engaging with contemporary psychology and the neurosciences, and moreover engages them with zeal. Thus the essays included here should appeal to a broad spectrum of emotion researchers in the various theoretical, experimental, and clinical branches of psychology, in addition to theorists in philosophy, philosophical psychology, moral psychology, and cognitive science, the social sciences, and literary theory.

Milan Zafirovski, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Authoritarianism: Puritanism, Democracy, and SocietySpringer | ISBN 0387493204 | 2007 | PDF | 1 MB | 354 pages
This book explores the historical and contemporary relationships of Protestant Puritanism to political and social authoritarianism. It focuses on Puritanism’s original, subsequent and modern influences on and legacies in political democracy and civil society within historically Puritan Western societies, with emphasis on Great Britain and particularly America, from the 17th to the 21th century.
The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Authoritarianism: Puritanism, Democracy and Society's importance and novelty lie in its original theoretical argument and empirical demonstration that Puritanism constitutes or reproduces political-social authoritarianism rather than liberal-secular political democracy and free civil society, contrary to the conventional wisdom in Puritan societies, especially America. The book’s methodological approach is thoroughly interdisciplinary by integrating methods, theories and data in sociology with those in other social sciences such as political science, history and economics. In addition, the book uses a comparative-historical method through comparisons of Western (and other) societies at various points of history in terms of the impact of Puritanism on authoritarianism.

Nucleic Acids and Proteins in Soil - P. Nannipieri, K. Smalla Springer, 2006 | ISBN: 3540294481 | English | PDF | 468 P. | 6 MB
With millions of different bacterial species living in soil, the microbial community is extremely complex, varying at very small scales. Microbe-driven functions are essential for most processes in soil. Thus, a better understanding of this microbial diversity will be invaluable for the management of the various soil functions. Nucleic Acids and Proteins in Soil combines traditional approaches in soil microbiology and biochemistry with the latest techniques in molecular microbial ecology. Included are methods to analyse the presence and importance of nucleic acids and proteins both inside and outside microbial cells, the horizontal gene transfer which drives bacterial diversity, as well as soil proteomes. Further chapters describe techniques such as PCR, fingerprinting, the challenging use of gene arrays for structural and functional analysis, stable isotope probing to identify in situ metabolic functions, and the use of marker and reporter genes in soil microbial ecology.

Oscar Wilde - The Happy Prince and Other Fairy TalesAudio | MP3 | ca 52 Mb | 128 kbps | ca 60 min | English
Date: 31-08-2007Oscar Wilde was born in 1854 in Dublin, the son of a physician and writer; his mother wrote poems and was an authority on Celtic folklore. Wilde married the daughter of a prominent Irish barrister. At the same time, the marriage marked the beginning of a peak creative period for him. During this time, in addition to his fairytale collections "The Happy Prince and Other Tales" (1888) and "A House of Pomegranates" (1892) and numerous poems and plays, he also wrote his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1891), whose hero's life rises above all morality and ends in the morass of a sinful existence, anticipating the author's own fate. On 30 November 1900, he died, completely impoverished, in Paris. The two collections of fairy tales do not go back to folktales that have come down to us anonymously, but belong to the genre of 'literary fairy tales', which, as the creation of a particular writer, represent a separate literary genre with a long tradition that goes back to antiquity.

Norman Steenrod, Paul Halmos, Menahem Schiffer, Jean Diedonne, "How to Write Mathematics"American Mathematical Society | ISBN 0821800558 | Year 1973 | 64 pages | DjVu | 3.9 MB
This short booklet contains four essays about how to write mathematics papers and books. The essays by Steenrod and Halmos, two prominent figures of 20th century mathematics, stand out for their common sense, depth and lucidity. They bring forth essential strategic issues, such as the need to maintain a clear separation between the formal and informal parts of mathematical papers, as well as useful tactical issues such as choosing notation. In my opinion, the essays transcend the field of mathematics, and the principles that they delineate are applicable to all areas of scientific writing.

Milton H. Erickson, M.D. and Ernest L. Rossi, Ph.D..: Experiencing Hypnosis: Therapeutic Approaches To Altered Statestif | 283 pages | 8.1 Mb (rar archive) | Publisher: Irvington Publishers Inc| English | ISBN: 0971619034
This book is a continuation of our earlier work in Hypnotic Realities (Erickson, Rossi, & Rossi, 1976) and Hypnotherapy: An Exploratory Casebook (Erickson & Rossi, 1979), whereby the senior author, Milton H. Erickson, trains the junior author, Ernest L. Rossi, in clinical hypnosis. Taken together, these three volumes present a deepening view of what hypnosis is and the ways in which a creative process of hypnotherapy can be achieved. The material in these volumes touches ultimately on the nature of human consciousness and suggests a variety of open-ended approaches to facilitate its exploration in hypnotherapy as well as in more formal research situations.
Indirect communication is the overall concept we use to cover what we have variously described as two-level communication, the naturalistic approach, and the utilization approach. The common denominator of all these approaches is that hypnotherapy involves something more than simple talk on a single, objective level. The readily apparent, overt content of a message is like the tip of an iceberg. The recipient of indirect communication is usually not aware of the extent to which his or her associative processes have been set in motion automatically in many directions. Hypnotic suggestion received in this manner results in the automatic evocation and utilization of the patient's own unique repertory of response potentials to achieve therapeutic goals that might have been otherwise beyond reach. In our previous volumes we outlined the operation of this process as the microdynamics of trance induction and suggestion. Although this is the essence of the senior author's original contribution to modern suggestion theory, we will review in this volume some of the many means and meanings that other authors have used as they struggled to reach an understanding of indirect communication in the long history of hypnosis.
The first section of this volume presents an historically important lecture on clinical hypnosis by the senior author wherein we witness his transition from the older authoritarian approach to hypnosis to the new permissive approaches, which he pioneered. Due to the unique nature of this presentation, an audio cassette of it accompanies this volume. We strongly recommend that our professional readers listen to this cassette and savor it a bit before dealing with the lecture as presented in the text.
The second and third sections of this volume focus on the phenomena of catalepsy and ideomotor signaling, two of the senior author's basic approaches to trance induction and hypnotherapy. The primary concern is the practical question of how to induce therapeutic trance and how to evoke the patient's repertory of life experiences and involuntary response systems that are utilized in hypnotherapy. As is characteristic of our previous work, the growing edge of our current understanding of the subjective experience of clinical trance and altered states is discussed throughout.
