SAP R/3-Basissystem . Release 4.6
Addison-Wesley( 2001-02-15) | ISBN: 3827317274 | German | PDF | 10.52 Mb | 410 pages

--Horst-Joachim Hoffmann

Uwe Cantner, Elias Dinopoulos, Robert F. Lanzillotti, "Entrepreneurship, the New Economy and Public Policy: Schumpeterian Perspectives"
Springer; 1 edition (December 22, 2004) | ISBN: 3540226133 | 345 pages | PDF | 4,8 Mb
This volume contains a collection of papers concerned with Schumpeterian perspectives on entrepreneurship, the New Economy and public policy. Those topics are firmly rooted in the more general discussion of technological change, industry evolution, industrial organization, public policy, and economic growth. These research branches have shown an increasing specialization during the last decades. A connecting principle nevertheless is the Schumpeterian approach on the one hand, but also the principles of evolutionary economics on the other hand. The various contributions of this volume demonstrate the high relevance and thought-provoking nature of Schumpeterian and Evolutionary Economics and its policy relevance.

Nuala C. Johnson, Ireland, the Great War and the Geography of Remembrance
Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521826160 | 2003 | PDF | 5 MB | 207 pages
Nuala C. Johnson explores the complex relationship between social memory and space in the representation of war in Ireland. The Irish experience of the Great War, and its commemoration, is the location of Dr Johnson's sustained and pioneering examination of the development of memorial landscapes, and her study represents a major contribution both to cultural geography and to the historiography of remembrance.

Attractively illustrated, this book combines theoretical perspectives with original primary research showing how memory literally took place in post-1918 Ireland, and the various conflicts and struggles that were both a cause and effect of this process. Of interest to scholars in a number of disciplines, Ireland, The Great War and The Geography of Remembrance shows powerfully how Irish efforts to collectively remember the Great War were constantly in dialogue with issues surrounding the national question, and the memorials themselves bore witness to these tensions and ambiguities.

Collecting Spatial Data: Optimum Design of Experiments for Random Fields
Springer (2007-09) | ISBN: 3540311742 | 242 pages | PDF | 1.97Mb
The book is concerned with the statistical theory for locating spatial sensors. It bridges the gap between spatial statistics and optimum design theory. After introductions to those two fields the topics of exploratory designs and designs for spatial trend and variogram estimation are treated. Special attention is devoted to describing new methodologies to cope with the problem of correlated observations. A great number of relevant references are collected and put into a common perspective. The theoretical investigations are accompanied by a practical example, the redesign of an Upper-Austrian air pollution monitoring network. A reader should be able to find respective theory and recommendations on how to efficiently plan a specific purpose spatial monitoring network. The third edition takes into account the rapid development in the area of spatial statistics by including new relevant research and references. The revised edition contains additional material on design for detecting spatial dependence and for estimating parametrized covariance functions.

Sperm Wars: Infidelity, Sexual Conflict, and Other Bedroom Battles
Thunder's Mouth Press(2005-12-13) | ISBN: 1560258489 | 352 pages | PDF | 2.71Mb

Published to acclaim and controversy a decade ago, Sperm Wars is a revolutionary thesis about sex that turned centuries-old biological assumptions on their head. Evolution has programmed men to conquer and monopolize women while women, without ever knowing they are doing it, seek the best genetic input on offer from potential sexual partners. In this book, best-selling author Robin Baker reveals these new facts of life: ten percent of children are not fathered by their "fathers;" less than one percent of a man’s sperm is capable of fertilizing anything (the rest is there to fight off all other men’s sperm); "smart" vaginal mucus encourages some sperm but blocks others; and a woman is far more likely to conceive through a casual fling than through sex with her regular partner. It’s no wonder that Sperm Wars is a classic of popular science writing that will surprise, entertain, and even shock.

David L. Howell, Geographies of Identity in Nineteenth-Century Japan
University of California Press | ISBN 0520240855 | 2005 | PDF | 1 MB | 272 pages
In this pioneering study, David L. Howell looks beneath the surface structures of the Japanese state to reveal the mechanism by which markers of polity, status, and civilization came together over the divide of the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Howell illustrates how a short roster of malleable, explicitly superficial customs--hairstyle, clothing, and personal names-- served to distinguish the "civilized" realm of the Japanese from the "barbarian" realm of the Ainu in the Tokugawa era. Within the core polity, moreover, these same customs distinguished members of different social status groups from one another, such as samurai warriors from commoners, and commoners from outcasts.

Understanding Human Knowledge: Philosophical Essays
Oxford University Press, USA (2002-10-22) | ISBN: 0199252130 | 272 pages | PDF | 0.22Mb
Barry Stroud has since the 1970s been one of the most original contributors to the philosophical study of human knowledge; this volume presents the best of his essays in this area. More than half of the essays are concerned with identifying clearly the question or issue that philosophical theories of knowledge are meant to answer, and with the role of philosophical scepticism in giving the right kind of sense to that question. Another series of essays explores possibilities within the broadly Kantian or 'transcendental' project of establishing the distinctive status and therefore special invulnerability of certain aspects of our conception of the world. Stroud's discussions of these fundamental questions are essential reading for anyone interested in the possibility of philosophical theories of knowledge.

Culture and Imperialism
Vintage (1994-05-31) | ISBN: 0679750541 | 416 pages | PDF | 67.2Mb
Edward Said makes one of the strongest cases ever for the aphorism, "the pen is mightier than the sword." This is a brilliant work of literary criticism that essentially becomes political science. Culture and Imperialism demonstrates that Western imperialism's most effective tools for dominating other cultures have been literary in nature as much as political and economic. He traces the themes of 19th- and 20th-century Western fiction and contemporary mass media as weapons of conquest and also brilliantly analyzes the rise of oppositional indigenous voices in the literatures of the "colonies." Said would argue that it's no mere coincidence that it was a Victorian Englishman, Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton, who coined the phrase "the pen is mightier . . ." Very highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand how cultures are dominated by words, as well as how cultures can be liberated by resuscitating old voices or creating new voices for new times.

The Cultures of Globalization
Duke University Press (1998-12) | ISBN: 0822321696| 393 pages | PDF | 0.83 Mb
A pervasive force that evades easy analysis, globalization has come to represent the export and import of culture, the speed and intensity of which has increased to unprecedented levels in recent years. The Cultures of Globalization presents an international panel of intellectuals who consider the process of globalization as it concerns the transformation of the economic into the cultural and vice versa; the rise of consumer culture around the world; the production and cancellation of forms of subjectivity; and the challenges it presents to national identity, local culture, and traditional forms of everyday life.
Discussing overlapping themes of transnational consequence, the contributors to this volume describe how the global character of technology, communication networks, consumer culture, intellectual discourse, the arts, and mass entertainment have all been affected by recent worldwide trends. Appropriate to such diversity of material, the authors approach their topics from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including those of linguistics, sociology, economics, anthropology, and the law. Essays examine such topics as free trade, capitalism, the North and South, Eurocentrism, language migration, art and cinema, social fragmentation, sovereignty and nationhood, higher education, environmental justice, wealth and poverty, transnational corporations, and global culture. Bridging the spheres of economic, political, and cultural inquiry, The Cultures of Globalization offers crucial insights into many of the most significant changes occurring in today’s world.

Encyclopedia of Diasporas: Immigrant and Refugee Cultures Around the World. Volume I: Overviews and Topics; Volume II: Diaspora Communities
Springer (2004-11-30) | ISBN: 0306483211| 1242 pages | DJVU | 10.3Mb
Immigration is a topic that is as important among anthropologists as it is the general public. Almost every culture has experienced adaptation and assimilation when immigrating to a new country and culture; usually leaving for what is perceived as a "better life". Not only does this diaspora change the country of adoption, but also the country of origin. Many large nations in the world have absorbed, and continue to absorb, large numbers of immigrants. The foreseeable future will see a continuation of large-scale immigration, as many countries experience civil war and secessionist pressures. Currently, there is no reference work that describes the impact upon the immigrants and the immigrant societies relevant to the world's cultures and provides an overview of important topics in the world's diasporas.
The encyclopedia consists of two volumes covering three main sections: Diaspora Overviews covers over 20 ethnic groups that have experienced voluntary or forced immigration. These essays discuss the history behind the social, economic, and political reasons for leaving the original countries, and the cultures in the new places; Topics discusses the impact and assimilation that the immigrant cultures experience in their adopted cultures, including the arts they bring, the struggles they face, and some of the cities that are in the forefront of receiving immigrant cultures; Diaspora Communities include over 60 portraits of specific diaspora communities. Each portrait follows a standard outline to facilitate comparisons. The Encyclopedia of Diasporas can be used both to gain a general understanding of immigration and immigrants, and to find out about particular cultures, topics and communities. It will prove of great value to researchers and students, curriculum developers, teachers, and government officials. It brings together the disciplines of anthropology, social studies, political studies, international studies, and immigrant and immigration studies.

Democracy and Difference
Princeton University Press | ISBN 0691044783 | 1996-07-08 | PDF | 19.8 MB | 352 pages
The global trend toward democratization of the last two decades has been accompanied by the resurgence of various politics of "identity/difference." From nationalist and ethnic revivals in the countries of east and central Europe to the former Soviet Union, to the politics of cultural separatism in Canada, and to social movement politics in liberal western-democracies, the negotiation of identity/difference has become a challenge to democracies everywhere. This volume brings together a group of distinguished thinkers who rearticulate and reconsider the foundations of democratic theory and practice in the light of the politics of identity/difference.

In Part One Jürgen Habermas, Sheldon S. Wolin, Jane Mansbridge, Seyla Benhabib, Joshua Cohen, and Iris Marion Young write on democratic theory. Part Two--on equality, difference, and public representation--contains essays by Anne Phillips, Will Kymlicka, Carol C. Gould, Jean L. Cohen, and Nancy Fraser; and Part Three--on culture, identity, and democracy--by Chantal Mouffe, Bonnie Honig, Fred Dallmayr, Joan B. Landes, and Carlos A. Forment. In the last section Richard Rorty, Robert A. Dahl, Amy Gutmann, and Benjamin R. Barber write on whether democracy needs philosophical foundations.

Introductory Guide to Post-structuralism and Post-modernism, An
Longman | ISBN 0745013600 | 1993 | PDF | 14.8 MB | 224 pages
The best introduction to post-modern theoreticians. Sarup is very clear about the authors he is writing about, even if the authors are known to be obscure on occasion. The theoretical ambition of the writers is very well portrayed, and he brings to surface the main differences between Lacan, Derrida, Foucault, Cixous, Lyotard and Baudrillard (and more) as well as showing the common thrust of the two movements (post-modernism and post-structuralism). The reading level of the book is accessible to any undergraduate student.
