Speech Acoustics and Phonetics: Selected WritingsPublisher:Springer | 2005-04-19 | ISBN 1402023731 | Pages:322 | PDF | 12.5 Mb
The overall aim of the book is to provide an integrated view of the separate stages of the speech chain, covering the production process, speech data analysis, and speech perception. Analyses of information bearing elements of the speech signal have found applications in linguistic theory and in the knowledge base of speech technology with special reference to speech synthesis.
The book contains 19 selected articles organized in 6 chapters: Speech research overview with a historical outline, Speech production and synthesis, The voice source, Speech analysis and features, Speech perception, Prosody.
Each chapter is preceded by an introduction including suggestions for additional reading. A list of all the author’s publications since 1945 is included. It is supplemented by an ordering in categories.
The articles have been selected to ensure representative coverage of the field. Some of them, primarily those on speech acoustics and the human voice source, have been previously published.
During the last 15 years, a major emphasis has been on speech prosody with several novel approaches. A recent major article provides a broad frame starting with aerodynamics and voice source properties, leading up to intonation analysis, prosodic grouping, and rules for text-to-speech synthesis. These are illustrated in an audio file. A novel feature introduced in analysis as well as synthesis is a parameter of perceived syllable and word prominence with acoustical correlates and ties to lexical categories.
The author was involved in early developments of distinctive feature theory together with Roman Jakobson and Morris Halle. Applications to Swedish are contained in the book.
A major issue in current phonology and phonetics has been the search for absolute invariance of speech features. However, with the growing insight into contextual variability, this remains a pseudo problem. In order to approach the essence of the speech code, we need to structure variability with respect to all possible contextual factors. As claimed by the author, this is not only a requirement for a sound development of general phonetics and phonology. It is also a prerequisite for realizing advanced aims of speech technology. Computer power cannot substitute fundamental knowledge of the human speech communication process.
The book should accordingly be of interest for several disciplines, not only speech technology, linguistics, phonetics, and acoustics, but also for psychology and physiology of speech and hearing with applications in medical science.

Insects as Natural Enemies: A Practical PerspectivePublisher:Springer | 2005-08-05 | ISBN 1402017340 | Pages: 748 | PDF | 17 Mb
Over the past three decades there has been a dramatic increase in theoretical and practical studies on insect natural enemies. The appeal of insect predators, and parasitoids in particular, as research animals derives from the relative ease with which many species may be cultured and experimented with in the laboratory, the simple life cycles of most parasitoids, and the increasing demand for biological pest control.
There is now a massive literature on insect natural enemies, so there is a great need for a general text that the enquiring student or research worker can use in deciding on approaches and techniques that are appropriate to the study and evaluation of such insects. This book fulfils that demand. A considerably updated and expanded version of a previous best-seller, it is an account of major aspects of the biology of predators and parasitoids, punctuated with information and advice on which experiments or observations to conduct, and how to carry them out. Guidance is provided, where necessary, on the literature that may need to be consulted on particular topics.
While researchers can now refer to several books on parasitoids and predators, Insects as Natural Enemies is unique in emphasising practicalities. It is aimed at students and professional working in universities and both government and commercial institutes in the fields of pest management, agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

John M. Anderson, "The Grammar of Names"352 pages | Publisher: Oxford University Press; 1 edition (February 6, 2007) | Language: English | ISBN: 019929741X | PDF | 1,6 MB
This book is the first systematic account of the syntax and semantics of names. Drawing on work in onomastics, philosophy, and linguistics John Anderson examines the distribution and subcategorization of names within a framework of syntactic categories, and considers how the morphosyntactic behaviour of names connects to their semantic roles. He argues that names occur in two basic circumstances: one involving vocatives and their use in naming predications, where they are not definite; the other their use as arguments of predicators, where they are definite. This division is discussed in relation to English, French, Greek, and Seri, and a range of other languages. Professor Anderson reveals that the semantic status of names, including prototypicality, is crucial to understanding their morphosyntax and role in derivational relationships. He shows that semantically coherent subsets of names, such as those referring to people and places, are characterized by morphosyntactic properties which may vary from language to language. His original and important investigation will appeal to scholars and advanced students of linguistics and philosophy.

The Elements Of Quantum Mechanics by Saul DushmanBrunton Press | ISBN: 1406700630 | 2007 | djvu | 472 pages | 15.4 Mb
PREFACE In the summer of 1932 the author was invited by Professor W. Lloyd Evans, Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, to give a series of lectures on quantum mechanics. For the opportunity thus afforded him for study of this subject in a university atmosphere the author wishes to express his gratitude to Professor Evans. The notes prepared for these lectures were subsequently published as a serial in the Journal of Chemical Education May 1935 to August 1936, inclusive. To the editor, Dr. Otto Reinmuth, the author is indebted for many helpful suggestions with regard to method of presentation and contents. Since no reprints of the series were made available it was suggested that the contents be revised for publication in book form. As stated in the first chapter, the writers aim has been to present the subject in such a manner that its essential concepts and logic may be readily comprehended by those who have not had any intensive training in mathematics beyond calculus. For this reason there has been presented in a number of cases a great deal more detail of the mathematical development than would seem necessary to those readers who are familiar with more advanced branches of mathematics. The author lays no claim to being an expert in the field of quantum mechanics. But, like many other workers in science, he has felt a strong desire to learn something about its technic and applications. This volume may therefore be regarded in a sense as a series of notes which have served to clarify, at least to his own satisfaction, some of the difficulties which he, together with probably a considerable number of other students, has encountered in attempting to understand the subject. Should the contents of this volume prove of any assistance to others in enabling them to proceed with the study of more advanced treatises, he will feel amply rewarded for a task which has indeed been a source of intellectual pleasure. He also wishes to take this opportunity of expressing his appreciation of the sympathetic support of Dr. W. D. Coolidge, the Director of the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Company, in a task which could scarcely have been carried through without it.

John M. Anderson, "Modern Grammers of Case"480 pages | Publisher: Oxford University Press; 1 edition (August 7, 2006) | Language: English | ISBN: 019929707X | PDF | 1,8 MB
This book addresses fundamental issues in linguistic theory, including the relation between formal and cognitive approaches, the autonomy of syntax, the content of universal grammar, and the value of generative and functional approaches to grammar. It focuses on the grammar of case relations, signalled by morphological case, prepositions, and word order. Part I offers a critical history of modern grammars of case, focussing on the last four decades and setting this in the context of earlier, including ancient, developments. The subjects considered include the evolution of ideas concerning deep structure and semantic and grammatical relations, and arguments for the maintenance of the traditional central position of case in the grammar. In parts II and III Professor Anderson examines the category of case and central unresolved issues in the grammar of case. The latter include questions relating to the idea of an ontologically-based grammar, particularly the degree to which syntactic categories and relationships are grounded in meaning, and the notion of linguistic creativity. This involves a consideration of the way in which cases may be identified and whether their distribution is determined through semantics. The book sheds new light on the interactions between meaning and grammar and on the structure and development of lexical and grammatical systems. The argument and its far-reaching consequences will be of wide interest to linguists, philosophers and others seeking to understand the workings of language.

James Reinders, "Intel Threading Building Blocks: Outfitting C++ for Multi-core Processor Parallelism"O'Reilly Media, Inc. | ISBN: 0596514808 | 332 Pages | PDF | 2.5 MB
Multi-core chips from Intel and AMD offer a dramatic boost in speed and responsiveness, and plenty of opportunities for multiprocessing on ordinary desktop computers. But they also present a challenge: More than ever, multithreading is a requirement for good performance. This guide explains how to maximize the benefits of these processors through a portable C++ library that works on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Unix systems. With it, you'll learn how to use Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) effectively for parallel programming -- without having to be a threading expert.
Written by James Reinders, Chief Evangelist of Intel Software Products, and based on the experience of Intel's developers and customers, this book explains the key tasks in multithreading and how to accomplish them with TBB in a portable and robust manner. With plenty of examples and full reference material, the book lays out common patterns of uses, reveals the gotchas in TBB, and gives important guidelines for choosing among alternatives in order to get the best performance.
You'll learn how Intel Threading Building Blocks:
Enables you to specify tasks instead of threads for better portability, easier programming, more understandable source code, and better performance and scalability in general
Focuses on the goal of parallelizing computationally intensive work to deliver high-level solutions
Is compatible with other threading packages, and doesn't force you to pick one package for your entire program
Emphasizes scalable, data-parallel programming, which allows program performance to increase as you add processors
Relies on generic programming, which enables you to write the best possible algorithms with the fewest constraints
Any C++ programmer who wants to write an application to run on a multi-core system will benefit from this book. TBB is also very approachable for a C programmer or a C++ programmer without much experience with templates. Best of all, you don't need experience with parallel programming or multi-core processors to use this book.

This is a study of intellectual conceptions of sex and sexuality in China from roughly 500 B.C. to A.D. 400. Ancient Chinese writers discussed sex openly and seriously as one of the most important topics of human speculation. This sophisticated and long-standing tradition has been almost entirely neglected by historians for a number of reasons that will be considered presently. The consequence is that studies of writings dealing with sex are sorely needed to redress our ignorance of a subject that was central to the ancient Chinese tradition.

Theodore M. Porter, "Trust in Numbers"Princeton University Press | ISBN 0691037760 | 1995 | PDF | 1 MB | 325 pages
This investigation of the overwhelming appeal of quantification in the modern world discusses the development of cultural meanings of objectivity over two centuries. How are we to account for the current prestige and power of quantitative methods? The usual answer is that quantification is seen as desirable in social and economic investigation as a result of its successes in the study of nature. Theodore Porter is not content with this. Why should the kind of success achieved in the study of stars, molecules, or cells be an attractive model for research on human societies? he asks. And, indeed, how should we understand the pervasiveness of quantification in the sciences of nature? In his view, we should look in the reverse direction: comprehending the attractions of quantification in business, government, and social research will teach us something new about its role in psychology, physics, and medicine.

Carlo Devito, "The Encyclopedia Of International Organized Crime"Facts on File (July 6, 2005) | ISBN:0816048487 | 386 pages | PDF | 4,4 Mb
In the U.S., organized crime has largely been associated with the Mafia. What this encyclopedia attempts to do is provide a definitive reference source that reveals the depth and breadth of all organized criminal activity around the world. In 450 entries, it covers all of the major criminal groups, detailing their origins and operations and showing their interconnectedness.
According to the book's introduction, the definition of organized crime by Interpol, the organization set up to enhance international police cooperation, is "any enterprise or group of persons engaged in a continuing illegal activity which has as its primary purpose the generation of profits irrespective of national boundaries." With this definition in mind, the encyclopedia includes entries on crime bosses as well as gangs, nationalities, drug cartels, activities, and crime-fighting laws and groups. Examples include Bonanno crime family, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Human trafficking, Jamaican Posse, Motorcycle gangs, Tongs, and Triads. Why do motorcycle gangs rate an entry? Because "they pose a general threat to society and law enforcement through their possession of sophisticated weapons and intricate intelligence network." One also reads about the POBOB, or Pissed Off Bastards of Bloomington, a group of bikers who attended a rally held in Hollister, California, the weekend of July 4, 1946, which legend holds to be the genesis of the outlaw gangs. POBOB later became known as the Hell's Angels. This is just one of the interesting its of information that make the encyclopedia so readable.

Leonardo Messinese, "The Problem of God in Modern Philosophy" The Davies Group Publishers | ISBN:1888570822 | 96 pages | PDF | 9,6 Mb
Messinese examines the ideas of God at work within modern philosophy, including Descartes, Hume, Kant and Hegel, and demonstrates their contemporary significance for thinking about God. Ultimately, Hegel's thought is the site of greatest opportunity for understanding the relationship and the difference between philosophy and theology. For Hegel, God is understood as "immanent transcendence," and this is the highest achievement of modern philosophy, in contrast to a theology that sees God as pure transcendence in faith.

Karl F. Doerner, Michel Gendreau , Peter Greistorfer and oth., "Metaheuristics: Progress in Complex Systems Optimization " Springer; 1 edition (August 23, 2007) | ISBN:0387719199 | 410 pages | PDF | 7 Mb
Metaheuristics has grown and continues to grow steadily. Seen both from the technical point of view and from the application-oriented side, these optimization tools have established their value in a remarkable story of success. Researchers have demonstrated the ability of these methods to solve hard combinatorial problems of practical sizes within reasonable computational time.
Highlighted in METAHEURISTICS: Progress in Complex Systems Optimization are the recent developments made in the area of Simulated Annealing, Path Relinking, Scatter Search, Tabu Search, Variable Neighborhood Search, Hyper-heuristics, Constraint Programming, Iterated Local Search, GRASP, bio-inspired algorithms like Genetic Algorithms, Memetic Algorithms, Ant Colony Optimization or Swarm Intelligence, and several other paradigms. In addition, a series of tutorials on developing areas in Metaheuristics are presented in the volume. Giving these tutorials are some of the top researchers in Metaheuristics: Edmund Burke, Reuven Rubinstein, Eric Taillard, Gilles Pesant, Pierre Hansen, and Stefan Voß.
Applications addressed are anticipated to include production planning, machine and project scheduling, the traveling salesman and vehicle routing, packing, knapsack and location problems with layout design, portfolio selection, network-design, health care, energy and environmental planning, data mining, pattern classification and biotechnology, among others.
The aim of this book is to provide several different kinds of information: a delineation of general Metaheuristics methods, a number of state-of-the-art articles from a variety of well-known classical application areas as well as an outlook to modern computational methods in promising new areas. Therefore, this book may equally serve as a textbook in graduate courses for students, as a reference book for people interested in engineering or social sciences, and as a collection of new and promising avenues for researchers working in this field.

From Revolutionaries to Citizens: Antimilitarism in France, 1870-1914Duke University Press | ISBN 082232766X | 2002 Edition | PDF | 277 Pages | 1.4 MB
"Paul B. Miller has made a very important contribution to our understanding of the antimilitarism and antiwar activism of the labor movement in France. . . . Its key contributions are a careful examination of the relationship between antimilitarist and antipatriotic movements, a meticulous account of how these groups delivered their appeals, and most important, an exacting evaluation of the actual strengths and weaknesses of antimilitarists. . . . Miller’s conclusion will inspire much debate, but even those who disagree will find that his work greatly advances their own."
"This is an interesting and solidly researched study that contributes to an important ongoing debate within European labor history."
--Michael Hanagan, American Historical Review
"Miller's argument is convincing and important on many accounts. He is at his most persuasive when pointing to the yawning gap between reality and the perception of antimilitarism in France during the decade and a half before the outbreak of World War I."
--Mona L. Siegel, Canadian Journal of History
"Miller has written a compelling study of antimilitarism in France that will no doubt rank as an important contribution to the field. The style of writing is clear, and the compelling narrative kept this reviewer anxiously turning pages, a rare feat in a scholarly monograph."
--Lawrence H. Davis, Labour/Le Travail

Yihong Gong, Wei Xu, " Machine Learning for Multimedia Content Analysis "Springer; 1 edition (October 1, 2007) | ISBN:0387699384 | 293 pages | PDF | 8,9 Mb
Challenges in complexity and variability of multimedia data have led to revolutions in machine learning techniques. Multimedia data, such as digital images, audio streams and motion video programs, exhibit richer structures than simple, isolated data items. A number of pixels in a digital image collectively conveys certain visual content to viewers. A TV video program consists of both audio and image streams that unfold the underlying story. To recognize the visual content of a digital image, or to understand the underlying story of a video program, we may need to label sets of pixels or groups of image and audio frames jointly.
Machine Learning for Multimedia Content Analysis introduces machine learning techniques that are particularly powerful and effective for modeling spatial, temporal structures of multimedia data and for accomplishing common tasks of multimedia content analysis. This book systematically covers these techniques in an intuitive fashion and demonstrates their applications through case studies. This volume uses a large number of figures to illustrate and visualize complex concepts, and provides insights into the characteristics of many algorithms through examinations of their loss functions and straightforward comparisons.
Machine Learning for Multimedia Content Analysis is designed for an academic and professional audience. Researchers will find this book an invaluable tool for applying machine learning techniques to multimedia content analysis. This volume is also suitable for practitioners in industry.

Thinking It Through: An Introduction to Contemporary PhilosophyOxford University Press, USA | ISBN:0195134583 | PDF | 2003 edition | 432 pages | 1.2 MB
What legal and political circumstances justify civil disobedience? When does lying qualify as a moral act? It is by probing a wide range of such questions that a Princeton professor demonstrates what it means to do philosophy. Hoping to discipline readers in the systematic analysis of inquiries, Appiah shows the uninitiated how to weigh alternative perspectives and test the internal consistency of arguments. The alternative perspectives scrutinized include those of classic thinkers (including Plato, Descartes, and Kant), and the conundrums surveyed include many central to the philosophic tradition (such as the mind-body problem), but readers quickly learn how rigorous philosophical thinking can guide them through a thicket of contemporary issues not yet in the textbooks. Beginners who can't tell a "counterfactual" from a "foundational belief" soon find themselves understanding how such technical terms can tighten their reasoning about language, morality, politics, and other topics. By the time they finish the book, many readers will discover that their timid curiosity about philosophy has grown into a bold willingness to explore the professional literature. Bryce Christensen
"This book is excellent, one of the best of its kind that I've seen. It accomplishes what few general introductions to philosophy even attempt: to integrate contemporary discussion and argument into a treatment of our perennial problems without losing sight of their roots."--David Sosa, University of Texas at Austin
"The distinguishing mark of this work, which will set it clearly apart from all the best introductory books of this kind, is the way it makes deep and insightful connections among the various topics. It introduces the reader to all the main problems of contemporary philosophy, and makes philosophical concepts come alive in systematic exploration of the deep thoughts and difficult arguments to which Appiah gives lucid access."--Neil Tennant, The Ohio State University
"An extraordinarily successful introduction to philosophy: wise, witty and deeply engaging."--Paul Boghossian, New York University

Prudence J. Jones, Cleopatra: A SourcebookUniversity of Oklahoma Press | ISBN 080613741X | 2006 | PDF | 2 MB | 363 Pages
Cleopatra's life story, gleaned from contemporary sources, is powerfully intriguing: Married four times, she seduced two of the most powerful men in Rome (Julius Caesar and Marc Antony), became the sole ruler of Egypt, gained legendary status for her lavish banquets, and chose to die rather than endure disgrace as the prisoner of Octavian, Caesar's heir.
This sourcebook documents what we know of the historical figure and also shows how she has evolved through the lens of interpretation. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, the volume consists of a series of readings about Cleopatra--historical, literary, and documentary--extending from ancient times to the twentieth century, from the European Romantics to the Afro centrists, and from Middle English to modern Arabic.

Michael Lopp, "Managing Humans: Biting and Humorous Tales of a Software Engineering Manager" Apress (June 12, 2007) | ISBN:159059844X | 209 pages | PDF | 1,4 Mb
Managing Humans is a selection of the best essays from Michael Lopp's web site, Rands In Repose. Drawing on Lopp's management experiences at Apple, Netscape, Symantec, and Borland, this book is full of stories based on companies in the Silicon Valley where people have been known to yell at each other. It is a place full of dysfunctional bright people who are in an incredible hurry to find the next big thing so they can strike it rich and then do it all over again. Among these people are managers, a strange breed of people who through a mystical organizational ritual have been given power over your future and your bank account. Whether you're an aspiring manager, a current manager, or just wondering what the heck a manager does all day, there is a story in this book that will speak to you. You will learn:
What to do when people start yelling at each other
How to perform a diving save when the best engineer insists on resigning
How to say "No" to the person who signs your paycheck
Among fans of Michael Lopp is the incomparable Joel Spolsky, cofounder and CEO of Fog Creek Software:
"What you're holding in your hands in by far the most brilliant book about managing software teams you're ever going to find".
This book is designed for managers and would-be managers staring at the role of a manager wondering why they would ever leave the safe world of bits and bites for the messy world of managing humans. The book covers handling conflict, managing wildly differing personality types, infusing innovation into insane product schedules, and figuring out how to build a lasting and useful engineering culture

Margaret K. Nydell, Understanding Arabs: A Guide for Modern TimesIntercultural Press | ISBN:1931930252 | 2005 | PDF | 2 MB | 363 Pages
This volume is a handbook, intended to be read easily and quickly, by people who are not specialists. Written by highly-esteemed Arabist and academic Margaret Nydell, Understanding Arabs will bring about understanding about modern-day Arabs for foreignersâ€â€especially Westerners in America and Europeâ€â€without pushing a political agenda.
Updated to reflect the complex events that are playing out on the world stage, new chapters include: Islamic Fundamentalismâ€â€This political and social issue is not a part of the mainstream Islamic religion. The efforts to follow and understand evolving Islamic social/religious thought have been completely overwhelmed by the notorious emergence of fundamentalism. Anti-Americanism: It needs to be made clear that Middle Eastern Muslims and Arabs do not "hate" America. Nor do they hate American people. But they are very angry at America's government and a perceived unfairness with the American foreign policy. Between 1980 and 2001, the United States engaged in fifteen direct military operations in the Middle East, all of them directed at Muslims.
There were an equal number of non-military actions such as imposing punitive embargoes, threats through military build-up, policies in support of some regional states against others, support of selected opposition groups, and providing weapons (sometimes secretly). What matters here is not the diplomatic issue of who we supported or why, the result has been that these actions are seen by local people as American interference in their region, and resentment has continued to build.

Alfred W.-S. Loo, "Peer-to-Peer Computing: Building Supercomputers with Web Technologies " Springer; 1 edition (December 18, 2006) | ISBN:1846283817 | 268 pages | PDF | 4,2 Mb Client/Server architecture was first proposed in the late 1980s as an alternative to conventional mainframe systems. Mainframe processing quickly becomes a bottleneck in any information system, but client/server models shift the processing burden to the client computer. Through workload sharing, client/server systems can improve overall efficiency while reducing budgets.
Companies are again searching for ways to improve their processing power without further investment in new hardware and software. Many client computers are idle most of the time, and have unused disk space. The next logical step is to maximise the resources of these computers, and the peer-to-peer (P2P) model is the answer.
A new and simple peer-to-peer model will be introduced in this book. In it:
• Readers will be taught to install peer-to-peer systems which can then manage and distribute the processing power of any number of clients.
• The size of network can range from two to over a million computers.
• The software necessary to implement peer-to-peer systems quickly can be downloaded from the book’s website at www.springer.com/1-84628-381-7/
The deployment of web technologies will enable individuals and organisations of all sizes to use computers across a network as though it were a single supercomputer to solve complex problems, and after reading this book, readers will be able to install a peer-to-peer system of any size.

Plant Propagation by Tissue Culture: Volume 1. The BackgroundSpringer | 1402050046 | Edition - 2007-11 | PDF | 520 pages | 2 MB | Rapidshare & Megaupload&Aliceinwire
Procedures for plant tissue culture have been developing from ca. 1930 onwards and are now essential in many domains of science and teaching. The use of these techniques for plant propagation only began to emerge some 40 years later. The first edition of “Plant Propagation by Tissue Culture by Edwin F. George appeared in 1986. A second edition consisting of two volumes appeared in 1993 and 1996. For researchers and students, George’s books have become the standard works on in vitro plant propagation. These volumes also contain a wealth of information crucial for researchers and companies working in related areas; particularly plant breeding, genetic engineering, phytopathology, production of secondary metabolites and conservation. Scientific knowledge has expanded rapidly since the second edition and it would now be a daunting task for a single author to cover all aspects adequately. Therefore, in this third edition, topics are being covered by a number of specialists in the field. However, this edition still maintains the integration that was characteristic of the previous editions. The first volume of the new edition highlights the scientific background of in vitro propagation. The second volume, which is in preparation, will cover the practice of micropropagation and describe its various applications.

Nancy Cohen, The Reconstruction of American Liberalism, 1865-1914The University of North Carolina Press | ISBN 0807853542 | 2002 | PDF | 1 Mb | 333 Pages
Tracing the transformation of liberal political ideology from the end of the Civil War to the early twentieth century, Nancy Cohen offers a new interpretation of the origins and character of modern liberalism. She argues that the values and programs associated with modern liberalism were formulated not during the Progressive Era, as most accounts maintain, but earlier, in the very different social context of the Gilded Age.
Integrating intellectual, social, cultural, and economic history, Cohen argues that the reconstruction of liberalism hinged on the reaction of postbellum liberals to social and labor unrest. As new social movements of workers and farmers arose and phrased their protests in the rhetoric of democratic producerism, liberals retreated from earlier commitments to an expansive vision of democracy. Redefining liberal ideas about citizenship and the state, says Cohen, they played a critical role in legitimating emergent corporate capitalism and politically insulating it from democratic challenge.
As the social cost of economic globalization comes under international critical scrutiny, this book revisits the bitter struggles over the relationship between capitalism and democracy in post-Civil War America. The resolution of this problem offered by the new liberalism deeply influenced the progressives and has left an enduring legacy for twentieth-century American politics, Cohen argues.

Stephen C. Neff, War and the Law of Nations: A General HistoryCambridge University Press | ISBN 0521662052 | 2005 | PDF | 2 Mb | 456 Pages
This ambitious volume traces war as a legal concept from Roman times through to the twentieth century. Neff demonstrates how war has been seen variously as a law-enforcement operation, as a duel between states and as a 'crime against the peace'. He also considers the post World War II definition of war as an international law-enforcement mechanism under UN aupices. Although unsuccessful, this attempt did help transform war into a humanitarian, rather than a policy, problem.

Mark Levene, Genocide in the Age of the Nation State: Volume 1: The Meaning of GenocideI. B. Tauris | ISBN:1850437521 | 2005 | PDF | 2 Mb | 277 Pages
How should we understand genocide in the modern world? As an aberration from the norms of a dominant liberal international society? Or rather as a guide to the very dysfunctional nature of the international system itself? This is the first book to consider the phenomenon within a broad context of world historical development. In this first volume, Mark Levene sets out the conceptual issues in the study of genocide and the historical linkage between the rise of the West, in both its modern and early modern domestic and colonial settings, and increasing tendencies to physically annihilate native peoples or religiously heterodox communal groups who stood as obstacles in its path.

Tomas Bjork, "Arbitrage Theory in Continuous Time (Oxford Finance)"Oxford University Press, USA; 2 edition | ISBN:0199271267 | 488 pages | PDF | 8,3 Mb
The second edition of this popular introduction to the classical underpinnings of the mathematics behind finance continues to combine sound mathematical principles with economic applications. Concentrating on the probabilistic theory of continuous arbitrage pricing of financial derivatives, including stochastic optimal control theory and Merton's fund separation theory, the book is designed for graduate students and combines necessary mathematical background with a solid economic focus. It includes a solved example for every new technique presented, contains numerous exercises, and suggests further reading in each chapter. In this substantially extended new edition Bjork has added separate and complete chapters on measure theory, probability theory, Girsanov transformations, LIBOR and swap market models, and martingale representations, providing two full treatments of arbitrage pricing: the classical delta-hedging and the modern martingales. More advanced areas of study are clearly marked to help students and teachers use the book as it suits their needs

Designing Object Oriented C++ Applications Using The Booch MethodPrentice Hall; 1st edition | ISBN: 0132038374 | 512 pages | February 15, 1995 | PDF | 0.8 Mb
Using a practical, problem-solving approach -- written from an engineering (rather than a computer science) point of view -- this book teaches the fundamental concepts of object-oriented design and how those concepts can be applied using C++. It provides readers with the tools to deal with larger and more complex projects than they may be used to, and shows how to develop an object-oriented application -- from the early stages of analysis, through the low level design, and into the implementation. Focuses on the practical approaches to software engineering (both in the creation of the logical design, and the physical development environment); highlights traps, pitfalls, and work-arounds in the application of C ++ to OOD; shows how to use the Booch method of OOD (exploring the notation in detail, using it to present the concepts of OOD, and where appropriate, translating the notation into corresponding C++ code); and presents the different forms of object-oriented multiprocessing and the tools and principles of designing object-oriented applications using them. For engineers who want to build software systems in C++ using Object-Oriented Design techniques, and for software engineers who want to learn the nitty gritty details of building Object-Oriented software.

Mark Levene, Genocide in the Age of the Nation State: Volume 2: The Rise of the West and Coming GenocideI. B. Tauris | ISBN 1845110579 | 2005 | PDF | 2 Mb | 470 Pages
Most books on genocide consider it primarily as a twentieth century phenomenon. In The Rise of the West and the Coming of Genocide, Mark Levene argues that this approach fails to grasp its true origins. Genocide developed out of modernity and the striving for the nation-state, both essentially Western experiences. It was European expansion into all hemispheres between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries that provided the main stimulus to its pre-1914 manifestations. One critical outcome, on the cusp of modernity, was the French revolutionary destruction of the Vendee. Levene finishes this volume at the 1914 watershed with the destabilising effects of the 'rise of the West' on older Ottoman, Chinese, Russian and Austrian empires, with devastating consequences for peoples such as the Armenians, and the East European Jews.

UML for Database Design (The Addison-Wesley Object Technology Series)Addison-Wesley Professional; 1st edition | ISBN: 0201721635 | 320 pages | July 24, 2001 | CHM | 5 Mb
The Unified Modeling Language (UML), the standard graphical notation for modeling business and software application needs, has emerged as an effective modeling tool for database design. When used as a common modeling language for the many facets of system development, the UML can serve as a unifying framework that facilitates the integration of database models with the rest of a system design.
This pragmatic guide introduces you to the UML and leads you through the process of UML-based database modeling and design. The book presents the different types of UML diagrams, explaining how they apply to the database world, and shows how data modeling with the UML can be tied into the Rational Unified Process.
UML for Database Design is structured around the database design process: business use case modeling, business object modeling, database requirements definition, analysis and preliminary design, and, finally, detailed design and deployment. For each phase of development the book describes the overall objectives and workflow of that phase, the status of the case study, the relevant UML constructs, and the nuts and bolts of database modeling and design with the UML. Drawing on their extensive industry experience, the authors reveal the trials and tribulations of database development teams, lessons learned, and pointers for success.

Strategies for Prediction, Diagnosis, and Development (Applied Psychology)"Lawrence Erlbaum Associates | ISBN: 0805851240 | 368 pages | PDF | 1,9 Mb
The theme permeating this book on assessment centers is "continuity and change", describing what has remained the same and what has changed in the 50-year history of the assessment center method. One of the important changes explored is the evolution of the goals of assessment center programs and the ways in which assessment centers and their component parts have been used. Assessment Centers in Human Resource Management clearly differentiates between assessment centers used for prediction, diagnoses, and development.
In addition, this book explores:
*assessment centers and human resource management;
*court cases involving assessment centers;
*innovations in assessment center operations;
*cross-cultural considerations including diversity of the workforce; and
*assessor training.
The target audience for the text includes students who are learning about assessment centers, practitioners including human resource managers and consultants who may be considering the implementation of assessment centers, and academicians who are researching the method and wish to understand current issues.

Win32 API Programming with Visual BasicO'Reilly Media, Inc. | ISBN: 1565926315 | 534 pages | November 19, 1999 | CHM | 4 Mb
The Win32 API, or Application Programming Interface, is of immense use in extending the power of Visual Basic. The Win32 API is the collection of functions and subroutines that provides programmatic access to the features of the operating system. It allows Visual Basic programmers far greater access to the inner workings of the Windows operating system without having to suffer through the steep learning curve associated with Visual C++ style Windows programming. The book is designed for users with an intermediate-level (or higher) knowledge of Visual Basic version 4 or later and a desire to stretch VB into the realm of Windows system programming. Users do not need any background in Visual C++, nor do they need any previous experience programming the Win32 API. This book teaches users how to do relatively simple tasks, such as adding tab stops to a list box and gathering system information (i.e., which version of Windows is running on a system and the number of buttons on the user's mouse). It also teaches users about several advanced programming techniques such as synchronizing two VB applications so they can work in cooperation with each other and how to extract data from controls that belong to another application. Win32 API Programming with Visual Basic also spends a good deal of time describing the basic operations of the Windows NT and Windows 95/98 operating systems. Microsoft's documentation seldom takes into account what the reader knows or does not know. Hence, a solid grounding in the basics of the Windows operating systems will help VB programmers to better understand Microsoft's documentation. This book helps VB programmers eliminate the trial and error process that is usually associated with calling the Win32 API from Visual Basic and does so in a practical, straightforward fashion that is the hallmark of author Steve Roman's style.

Hedge funds are now the largest volume players in the capital markets. They follow a wide assortment of strategies but their activities have replaced and overshadowed the traditional model of the long only portfolio manager. Many of the traditional technical indicators and commonly accepted trading strategies have become obsolete or ineffective.
The focus throughout the book is to describe the principal innovations that have been made within the equity markets over the last several years and that have changed the ground rules for trading activities. By understanding these changes the active trader is far better equipped to profit in today’s more complex and risky markets. Long/Short Market Dynamics includes:
A completely new technique, Comparative Quantiles Analysis, for identifying market turning points is introduced. It is based on statistical techniques that can be used to recognize money flow and price/momentum divergences that can provide substantial profit opportunities.
Power laws, regime shifts, self-organized criticality, phase transitions, network dynamics, econophysics, algorithmic trading and other ideas from the science of complexity are examined. All are described as concretely as possible and avoiding unnecessary mathematics and formalism.
Alpha generation, portfolio construction, hedge ratios, and beta neutral portfolios are illustrated with case studies and worked examples.
Episodes of financial contagion are illustrated with a proposed explanation of their origins within underlying market dynamics

Alternative energy, once the domain of hippies and off-the-grid fringe enthusiasts, has gone mainstream. Although technologies such as solar and wind power, plant-based fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel, and "green" buildings have become hip because of environmental awareness and global climate change, the real reason behind their increasing profile is economics. When clean energy sources begin to rival more traditional ones on a cost basis, which is beginning to happen now owing to advances related to the microchip and economies of scale, corporations will quickly begin to take notice. Although Pernick and Wilder state that they are not financial advisors, they profile the leading companies involved in the most promising of these alternative energies, which gives the reader a place to begin doing further research into investment opportunities. The book is an excellent update on the current state of the industry and a who's who of the companies poised to profit from this exciting array of technologies.

This is a textbook for courses and independent study in environmental and chemical engineering, as well as in many other disciplines concerned with transport and diffusion of all manner of chemicals. Estimating the transport and fate of chemicals released into the environment is an interesting and challenging task. The global environment is large, on the chemical transport and fate scale. This text applies the mathematics of diffusion, turbulent diffusion and dispersion to the atmosphere, lakes, rivers, groundwater and the ocean, as well as transport between these media. The book follows a new educational paradigm of text books, in that it is based upon examples and case studies. The required theory is explained as a solution technique to solve the case studies and example problems. A large portion of the book is dedicated to examples and case studies, from which the important principles are derived.

Michael Abrash, "Michael Abrash's Graphics Programming Black Book (Special Edition)"Publisher: Coriolis Group Books | ISBN: 1576101746 | 09 July 1997 | 4.9 MB | Pages: 1342 | PDF
Though much of the book (such as 8088/286/386 assembly language optimization and VGA graphics programming) is out-of-date by now, the reader can see some of the larger tendencies in the author's work over the years--a reliance on profiling in order to test code, and creative thinking to improve performance wherever possible.
This text features assembler optimization for a variety of problems including searching algorithms, and records the author's approaches to optimizing code for the evolving line of Intel CPUs, from the 8088 on to the early Pentium lines. The last few chapters of this book are more relevant, and include a series of explorations of some of the technology behind the popular Doom and Quake 3-D games by id Corporation (where the author worked).
Optimized solutions to 3-D graphics problems from texture mapping, hidden surface removal, and Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) trees are explained. Current gaming and 3-D technology, such as Direct3D and VRML is left out, but it's clear that game programmers like the author will continue to push the limits of current hardware technology in inventive ways. This book is clearly targeted at game developers and serious assembly language programmers, not for the general reader.

Michael J. Sammon, "Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis: Descriptions, Examples, and Code"Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521660653 | 15 April 2000 | 30.2 MB | Pages: 295 | PDF
This book offers guided access to a collection of algorithms for the digital manipulation and analysis of images. Written in classic "cookbook" style, it reflects the authors' long experience as users and developers of image analysis algorithms and software.
For each task, they present a description and implementation of the most suitable procedure in easy-to-use form. The algorithms range from the simplest steps to advanced functions not commonly available for Windows users. Each self-contained section treats a single operation (histogram evaluation, low-pass filtering, and edge detection, among others).
The coverage includes typical situations requiring that operation and then discusses the algorithm and implementation. Sections start with a header illustrating the nature of the procedure through a "before" and "after" pictorial example and a ready-reference that lists typical applications, keywords, and related procedures. Annotated references can be found at the end of each section. An accompanying CD-ROM contains a collection of C programs for carrying out the book's procedures.

Carl W. Hoagstrom, "Magill's Encyclopedia of Science: Animal Life"Salem Press (April 2002) | ISBN: 1587650193 | 1820 pages | PDF | 22,7 Mb
This illustrated encyclopedia is a major revision and update of the six-volume Magill's Survey of Science: Life Science, published in 1991. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines in the life sciences, and most are affiliated with academic institutions. There are 385 signed main entries, ranging in length from 1000 to 3000 words each; 108 articles are updates from the previous edition, while 277 are new entries. The entries cover a wide variety of topics related to animal life and include articles on subjects such as biodiversity and defense mechanisms as well as those on specific species or individual animals. Each entry begins with ready-reference information and a list of principal terms with definitions. Species entries include a sidebar listing basic facts such as classification, geographical location, habitat, life span, and the anatomical features that make the species unique. The arrangement is strictly alphabetical, which means that specific animals or animal groups are intermingled with general topics, issues, and concepts; "cloning" is followed by "cockroaches," for instance, and "elk" by "embryology." This arrangement functions well for the intended audience of high school, undergraduate, and general readers but could prove frustrating for the younger student preparing a report on a specific animal. The illustrations consist of black-and-white photographs and are neither as numerous nor as exciting as those in Facts on File's three-volume The Encyclopedia of Mammals or DK's one-volume Animal, either of which is a better choice for libraries needing an animal encyclopedia only. The strength of the Magill's set is its comprehensive coverage of animal life science generally, not just individual animals. A worthwhile purchase for libraries needing this type of reference.

H. James Birx, "Encyclopedia of Anthropology"Sage Publications, Inc (December 8, 2005) | ISBN: 0761930299 | 2500 pages | PDF | 102 Mb
*Starred Review* Despite the fact that the study of anthropology is well respected and time honored, there has been a peculiar gap in the reference literature. No general, multivolume encyclopedia has offered a broad overview of the subject. Existing encyclopedias, such as Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropology (Holt, 1996), cover one aspect of the discipline. Several other single-volume encyclopedias are more like dictionaries, an example being the Companion Encyclopedia of Anthropology: Humanity, Culture, and Social Life (Routledge, 2002). But there has been nothing quite like this new Encyclopedia of Anthropology from Sage.
Five substantial volumes, with more than 1,000 entries, encompass information on all of the various aspects of the field. According to the accompanying literature, those are physical/biological anthropology, archaeology, cultural/social anthropology, linguistics, and applied anthropology. Articles on related topics such as biology, evolution, geology, paleontology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and theology are also included. Approximately 230 of the entries are biographical. The entries themselves are clearly written in language accessible for an undergraduate student or informed user but are substantial enough to be of value to the more advanced researcher.
The editorial attitude of the work seems totally in the camp of Darwinian evolution, in that the theories put forth by Darwin are valid and are well supported by the evidence available in the fossil record and the current state of development. However, other opinions are addressed. There is, for example, no entry on intelligent design (though there are several page references in the index), but there is one on Creationism, beliefs in and one on Non-Darwinian evolutionary mechanisms. Another controversy in anthropology, the issue of repatriation of artifacts, is presented most specifically in articles on Native peoples of the United States and Human rights in anthropology.
The volumes themselves are beautiful and a pleasure to use and read. The paper is thick and glossy, the bindings substantial. There is elegant and eye-catching use of color in the decorations at the top of the pages and as background for such elements as sidebars and bibliographies. Color pictures enhance the text. The volumes have all the features one has come to expect from a high-end encyclopedia: a list of contributors, a list of entries in alphabetical order and another list of entries in thematic groupings, cross-references and suggested additional reading, and a master bibliography. The only critical comment to be made is that the index refers only to page numbers without volume numbers, and there are no page ranges given on the spines of the volumes. The difficulty that this causes is somewhat balanced by having the entire index in each volume.

The Roly Poly SpiderE-book | PDF | 29 Pages | 25 MB | ISBN: 0590843893 | 1994
Editorial Reviews| “ | From Publishers Weekly Using catchy verses that follow the rhyme scheme of "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider," Sardegna (K Is for Kiss Goodnight) presents a seemingly sunny tale which, on closer inspection, masks abundant unpleasantness. This yellow, appropriately bug-eyed spider appears jolly, but is in fact a selfish and crafty creature who lures bugs to her web by complaining of loneliness, engages them in friendly chat, then eats them. "She snagged a caterpillar/ and asked him, 'What's your name?'/ He said, 'My name is Lester./ I'm handsome as can be.'/ Said the roly-poly spider,/ 'You look like lunch to me.'" She's only following nature, of course, but her lack of menace and casual slaughter will likely disturb the book's intended audience-the cuddly victims here will evoke more sympathy than the eponymous protagonist. Unfortunately, Arnold's (Green Wilma) outwardly playful watercolor and colored- pencil compositions reinforce the mayhem of massacre, as they depict a half-eaten ladybug in the spider's mouth, a hapless "great big fly" ensnared between two pie crusts, etc. Ages 3-6.
From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1?This must be the Itsy Bitsy Spider's evil twin, craftily luring creatures into her sticky web. Once stuck, the victims are devoured in sadistic ways. The roly-poly arachnid eats a bee's knees, sticks a straw in a beetle for beetle juice, and creates a crunchy shoefly pie, among other things. Her ravenous appetite catches up with her, though, when she gets stuck in a water spout. Try singing the words of this funny picture book to the familiar tune; they're interchangeable. That fact alone makes Sardegna's book worth a try, but coupled with Arnold's cartoons, this offering is a real winner. Watercolor and colored-pencil artwork in bright yellows, greens, and lavenders give the story a lighthearted tone. The yellow spider is huge and sphere-shaped, with bulging eyes and diminutive legs. The art is a delight, right down to the webbed endpapers.? | |

Shirelle Phelps, "Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law "Thomson Gale (November 2002) | ISBN: 078765759X | 1259 pages | PDF | 4,4 Mb
This work is designed for the layperson who wants background information about legal issues and procedures that affect our everyday lives. It is not a dictionary, although it includes a glossary, and it is not a do-it-yourself legal guide. Approximately 200 articles provide historical information, brief descriptions of relevant federal laws and regulations, variations in state and some local laws, directions to print and electronic sources of additional information, and contact details for potentially useful national and state organizations and agencies.
The articles are arranged in alphabetical order within broad categories, such as "Attorneys," "Consumer Issues," "Education," "Immigration," "Real Estate," and "Taxes." Some sections are surprisingly brief, while others are rather comprehensive. First Amendment Law merits only 3 pages, while Healthcare gets 70 and Internet gets 60. There is some unevenness in writing and editing. The article on international travel, for example, has several grammatical errors and still shows $400 as the maximum value of foreign-acquired goods to bring back duty-free. Otherwise, most of the information provided seems to be useful, and the editor offers the caveat to verify current status of laws and regulations and Web addresses.
Under Attorneys, there are suggestions for finding a good lawyer--and guidance regarding malpractice! The Automobiles entries include the basics for buying and leasing a vehicle, recommendations regarding insurance, and information on safety requirements (including seatbelts and child restraints). Immigration offers background material on asylum, deportation, and dual citizenship. Real estate provides the expected information on buying and selling property but includes sections on renters' liability, time-shares, and zoning as well. The section on Taxes explains how corporate and personal income taxes are structured, spells out what might be involved in an IRS audit, and shows sales tax rates by state. The index points to specific pages, but most users will find the comprehensive table of contents and the general arrangement by broad topic the easier way to find what they need.

Israeli F-15 Eagle Units in Combat (Osprey Combat Aircraft 67) by Shlomo Aloni (Author)Publisher: Osprey Publishing (December 2006) | ISBN: 9781846030475 | PDF | 15,6 Mb | 96 pages
Thanks to foxtrotAbout this book
Post-Yom Kippur War, Israel purchased the F-15 Eagle, the then world’s best air-to-air fighter, in an effort to prevent another surprise attack from the air. For the first time in its history the IDF/AF operated a fighter that was a full generation ahead of opposing interceptors in the region. The first ‘kill’ F-15 Baz (Buzzard) arrived in Israel in 1976 and soon proved its worth in combat. Israeli Baz pilots were credited with 12.5 kills between 1979 and 1981, with 33 victories following during the June 1982 Lebanon War. Despite substantial combat, no Israeli F-15 has ever been lost to enemy action. In the 1990s the US government supplied the IDF/AF with the F-15I Ra’am (Thunder) to fulfill the long-range surface-to-surface missile mission post-Desert Storm. From A to I, the extremely capable, and combat-tested, Israeli F-15 force will continue to deter potential enemies well into the foreseeable future. This book examines the history and development of these units.

Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of PropagandaSeven Stories Press | ISBN 1888363495 | 1997 Edition | PDF | Pages | 350 KB
"Propaganda," says Noam Chomsky, "is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state"--in other words, the means by which leaders keep the masses in line. In this slim pamphlet, he looks at American propaganda efforts, from the warmongering of Woodrow Wilson to the creation of popular support for the 1991 military intervention in Kuwait, and reveals how falsification of history, suppression of information, and the promotion of vapid, empty concepts have become standard operating procedure for the leaders of the United States--both Democrats and Republicans--in their efforts to prevent citizens from raising awkward questions about U.S. policy.

Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global DominanceMetropolitan Books | ISBN 0805074007 | 2003 Edition | PDF | 200 Pages | 1 MB
Noam Chomsky is considered the father of modern linguistics. In this richly detailed criticism of American foreign policy, he seeks to redefine many of the terms commonly used in the ongoing American war on terrorism. Surveying U.S. actions in Cuba, Nicaragua, Turkey, the Far East and elsewhere over the past half a century along with the modern American war in Iraq, Chomsky indicates that America is just as much a terrorist state as any other government or rogue organization. George W. Bush's 2003 invasion of Iraq drew worldwide criticism, in part because it seemed to present a new philosophy of pre-emptive war and an appearance of global empire building. But according to Chomsky, such has been the operating philosophy of American foreign policy for decades. Opponents of the Bush administration's tactics consistently point out how the American government supported Saddam Hussein for many years prior to the 1990 invasion of Kuwait (pictures of Donald Rumsfeld shaking Saddam's hand are easy to come by) as a means of pointing out how the United States is happy to fund despots when it's in American interests. But Chomsky, armed with extensive historical notation, takes this notion further, arguing how the repression of other nations' citizenry is, in fact, the very reason Americans support certain foreign leaders. The charges made throughout the book are severe, as are the dire consequences he posits if current trends are not reversed, and Chomsky is no more likely to make friends or gain supporters from the mainstream now than he's ever been. But Hegemony or Survival is relatively dispassionate. Instead of relying on camp or shock value or personal attacks as some of his contemporaries have done, Chomsky drives his well-supported points steadily forward in an earnest and highly readable style. --John Moe

Jules Constant , "Essentials of Bedside Cardiology (Contemporary Cardiology)"Humana Press | ISBN:1588291421 | 312 pages | PDF | 2,7 Mb
In this significantly enhanced second edition, Jules Constant, MD, helps physicians to perfect the fine art of history-taking and physical examination as corrective strategy to the sometimes false positives and negatives produced by advanced medical technologies in the diagnosis of cardiac disease. Moving beyond total reliance on laboratory data to the expert evaluation of personal patient data, Dr. Constant summarizes forty years of clinical experience with a proven list of time-tested questions designed to elicit the crucial nuances of cardiac-related symptoms, and then provides a complete differential diagnosis for each demonstrated symptom. His method includes numerous practical tips for obtaining cardiac clues from physical appearance, measuring arterial and jugular pulses and pressures, and using a stethoscope. The heart of the book is an extensive discussion of the art and science of diagramming and grading heart sounds and murmurs, ranging from S1 through S4 to ejection, systolic regurgitant, diastolic, and abdominalal murmurs. A invaluable, stand-alone compact disc offering a seventy-minute course in auscultation, complete with heartsound illustrations taken from actual patients over the course of thirty years, clearly demonstrates and explains the sounds and murmurs discussed.

Nancy C. Andreasen, "Brave New Brain: Conquering Mental Illness in the Era of The Genome"Oxford University Press | ISBN:0195167287 | 392 pages | PDF | 19 Mb
After centuries of outsiders carping about scientific reductionism, the promised synthesis is finally on its way. Immunology, genetics, medicine, neurology, and other fields are starting to overlap more and more, and prominent neuropsychiatrist Nancy C. Andreasen explores one exciting intersection in Brave New Brain. The author's broad understanding and straightforward writing offer readers a penetrating glimpse into new and future treatments for mental illness. Focusing on four devastating maladies (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and dementia), she shows what scientists have learned about them recently thanks to powerful imaging and biochemical tools. This knowledge, growing exponentially and integrated with data from diverse scientific research including the Human Genome Project, is used to propose mechanisms underlying diseases and potential cures--from genetic repair to bold new pharmacologic interventions.
Well-illustrated and lucidly explained, the book is an excellent lay primer on the brain and its disorders. Though Andreasen's prose isn't as elegant as some of her colleagues', it is clear and always to the point; many readers will appreciate the lack of distraction from the book's content. The hope she holds out to sufferers of mental illness, if not immediately promising, is certainly brighter than has been offered in recent years. Despite its moderately sinister title, Brave New Brain is an enlightening and even uplifting look at the convergence of several important scientific disciplines

Felix Bronner, Mary C. Farach-Carson, "Bone and Osteoarthritis (Topics in Bone Biology)" Springer; 1 edition (July 2007) | ISBN-10: 1846285135 | 189 pages | PDF | 4 Mb
Orthopedics and rheumatology, while separate specialties, have become close conceptually because advances in bone and joint biology enable practitioners to approach clinical problems comprehensively. This is especially true for the bench and translational scientists. Recently, there has been renewed interest in the role played by bone in the development of osteoarthritis, including targeting bone as a potential therapeutic approach.
The molecular and cellular approaches toward the relationship of joint and bone problems distinguish this from other books on osteoarthritis or skeletal medicine. Emphasis on genetics and on newer viewpoints and approaches, exemplified by the possible effect of subchondral bone on osteoarthritis, gives a wider viewpoint to the reader and may make possible novel approaches to solving a clinical problem. The book will therefore also interest experienced specialists, thereby broadening readership. Authors are internationally recognized experts in their field.
Topics discussed include the role of bone in osteoarthritis, ranging from basic cell and molecular biology to genetics and biomechanics. How this information may be used for new treatment approaches will also be covered.
This book, intended for students, researchers and clinicians, provides information that enables the novice to become oriented and the practitioner to update knowledge. No other book combines information on the relationship of bone to the development of osteoarthritis, or treats the pathophysiology of joints in the same way. This volume, like the others in Topics in Bone Biology series, encompasses aspects of many specialties, including rheumatology, orthopedics, endocrinology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, nursing and chiropractic medicine.

Building Genetic MedicineThe MIT Press | 0262162423 | Edition - April 1, 2007 | PDF | 285 pages | 1.8 MB | 584 pages | rapidshare
In Building Genetic Medicine, Shobita Parthasarathy shows how, even in an era of globalization, national context is playing an important role in the development and use of genetic technologies. Focusing on the development and deployment of genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer (known as BRCA testing) in the United States and Britain, Parthasarathy develops a comparative analysis framework in order to investigate how national "toolkits" shape both regulations and the architectures of technologies and uses this framework to assess the implications of new genetic technologies.
BRCA testing was one of the most highly anticipated and publicized technologies of contemporary medicine. Parthasarathy argues that differences in the American and British approaches to health care and commercialization of research led to the establishment of different BRCA services in the two countries. In Britain, the technology was available through the National Health Service as an integrated program of counseling and laboratory analysis, and was viewed as a potentially cost-effective form of preventive care. In the United States, although BRCA testing was initially offered by a number of providers, one company eventually became the sole provider of a test available to consumers on demand.
Parthasarathy also reports on an unsuccessful attempt by the American provider of BRCA testing to market its services in Britain. British scientists, health-care providers, and patients rejected the American technology, she argues, because it was part of a social, economic, and political system to which they were not accustomed. Parthasarathy draws lessons for the future of genetic medicine from these cross-national differences, and discusses the ways in which comparative case studies can inform policy-making efforts in science and technology.

Engineering Drawing for Manufacture (Manufacturing Engineering Modular Series) Brian Griffiths | Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann | Pages: 150 | 2002-10-06 | ISBN: 185718033X | PDF | 10.8mb
The processes of manufacture and assembly are based on the communication of engineering information via drawing. These drawings follow rules laid down in national and international standards. The organisation responsible for the international rules is the International Standards Organisation (ISO). There are hundreds of ISO standards on engineering drawing because drawing is very complicated and accurate transfer of information must be guaranteed. The information contained in an engineering drawing is a legal specification, which contractor and sub-contractor agree to in a binding contract. The ISO standards are designed to be independent of any one language and thus much symbology is used to overcome any reliance on any language. Companies can only operate efficiently if they can guarantee the correct transmission of engineering design information for manufacturing and assembly.
This book is a short introduction to the subject of engineering drawing for manufacture. It should be noted that standards are updated on a 5-year rolling programme and therefore students of engineering drawing need to be aware of the latest standards. This book is unique in that it introduces the subject of engineering drawing in the context of standards.

W. J. Leatherbarrow, The Cambridge Companion to DostoevskiiCambridge University Press | ISBN 0521654734 | 2002 | PDF | 3 MB | 261 pages
Key dimensions of Dostoevskii's writing and life are explored in this collection of specially commissioned essays. While remaining accessible to an undergraduate and non-specialist readership, the essays as a whole seek to renegotiate the terms in which Dostoevskii and his works are to be approached. This is achieved by replacing the conventional 'life and works' format by one that seeks instead to foreground key aspects of the cultural context in which those works were produced.
Contributors trace the often complex relationship between those aspects and the processes accompanying the creation of Dostoevskii's art. They examine topics such as Dostoevskii's relation to folk literature, money, religion, the family and science. The essays are well supported by supplementary material including a chronology of the period and detailed guides to further reading. Altogether the volume provides an invaluable resource for scholars and students.

Michael Maunder, Lights in the Sky: Understanding Astronomical and Meteorological Phenomena Springer | ISBN 1846285623 | 2007 | PDF | 3 MB | 233 pages
Many lights and other objects in the sky go unrecognised, or at least are little understood by those observing them. Such things range from the commonplace like rainbows and meteors, to the distinctly unusual like the green flash and ball lightning. And there is still a residuum of objects that remain unidentified by the watcher – classed generally as ‘UFOs’, a description which today has connotations of the mysterious, even of extraterrestrial visitors.
The first part of this book is an identification guide, very much like the "plant identifier" sections found in a good gardening or botany book. It allows quick (and structured) identification of known aerial phenomena, whether at night or during the day. The objects thus found are referenced to the second part of the book.
The second part gives a full description, physical explanation, and where relevant notes on observing and photographing the various phenomena. Some will need optical aids such as binoculars or telescopes, but the main thrust of the book is identification and explanation rather than imaging.

Israel Kleiner, A History of Abstract AlgebraBirkhauser | ISBN 9780817646844 | 2007 | PDF | 0.9 MB | 175 pages
| “ | For about three millennia, until the early nineteenth century, “algebra meant solving polynomial equations, mainly of degree four or less. Questions of notation for such equations, the nature of their roots, and the laws governing the various number systems to which the roots belonged, were also of concern in this connection. All these matters became known as classical algebra. (The term “algebra was only coined in the ninth century AD.) By the early decades of the twentieth century, algebra had evolved into the study of axiomatic systems. The axiomatic approach soon came to be called modern or abstract algebra. The transition from classical to modern algebra occurred in the nineteenth century. | |

Taking Sex Differences Seriously Publisher: Encounter Books (2005-05-25) | ISBN:159403091X | PDF | 1.42 Mb | 362 pages
Rhoads' book appears to be the result of exhaustive research and honesty in a field where there are normally strong biases. Although his foundational presuppositions are thoroughly Darwinist, as an advocate of intelligent design, I was able to agree with Rhoads' conclusions. In other words, rather than buying into his claims that gender differences are the result of imprinting at a significant stage in our evolutionary journey to homo sapiens, I was able to see the beauty of intelligent design intentionally creating men and women in many ways similar, but for good reason in some ways different. By brushing aside the egalitarian and feminist arguments based solely on emotion and political views, Rhoads asked questions of the scientific data to investigate which gender-based differences are results of nature and which are results of nurture. I'd even recommend this book for feminists, just so they can have a lucid example of claims made against some of their presuppositions. Bottom line: you'll learn, and you won't waste your money.

"A Beginner's Guide to Short-term Trading" is written to those of you who want to profit by grabbing the "sweet spots" out of a stock's uptrend or downtrend. The book explains two styles of trading: swing trading and position trading. When you place a swing trade, you buy a stock with the intent of taking gains in 2 - 5 days. When you enter a position trade, you typically buy a stock breaking out of a base into an uptrend. You hold that position as long as the stock rises in that uptrend, approximately 3 - 6 weeks

This book draws together a wide range of experts from diverse fields, such as reproductive biology and foraging energetics, to place recent field research into a synthetic perspective. The chapters tackle controversial issues in primate biology and behavior, including the role of brain expansion and infanticide in the evolution of primate behavioral strategies. The volume also presents an overview of comparative methodologies as applied to recent primate research.

Larry Witham, By Design: Science and the Search for GodEncounter Books | ISBN 159403043X | 2004 | PDF | 1 MB | 200 pages
At the heart of By Design are two inter-related movements. One is the science and religion dialogue, which stretches from the laboratories of Nobelists to inner sancta of the Vatican. This dialogue attempts to build bridges between two worlds formerly thought to be implacably hostile and incompatible. The other is the intelligent design movement, which by reviving a natural theology of design in nature has challenged the Darwinian strongholds in science and public education. Larry Witham introduces some of the most colorful characters in these movements, and summarizes the scientific developments that have made this dramatic new dialogue possible.

Coming Home to the Pleistocene Publisher: Island Press(2004-02-01) | ISBN-10: 1559635908 | PDF | 1.79 Mb | 237 pages
"When we grasp fully that the best expressions of our humanity were not invented by civilization but by cultures that preceded it, that the natural world is not only a set of constraints but of contexts within which we can more fully realize our dreams, we will be on the way to a long overdue reconciliation between opposites which are of our own making." --from Coming Home to the Pleistocene
Paul Shepard was one of the most profound and original thinkers of our time. Seminal works like The Tender Carnivore and the Sacred Game, Thinking Animals, and Nature and Madness introduced readers to new and provocative ideas about humanity and its relationship to the natural world. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Paul Shepard returned repeatedly to his guiding theme, the central tenet of his thought: that our essential human nature is a product of our genetic heritage, formed through thousands of years of evolution during the Pleistocene epoch, and that the current subversion of that Pleistocene heritage lies at the heart of today's ecological and social ills.
Coming Home to the Pleistocene provides the fullest explanation of that theme. Completed just before his death in the summer of 1996, it represents the culmination of Paul Shepard's life work and constitutes the clearest, most accessible expression of his ideas. Coming Home to the Pleistocene pulls together the threads of his vision, considers new research and thinking that expands his own ideas, and integrates material within a new matrix of scientific thought that both enriches his original insights and allows them to be considered in a broader context of current intellectual controversies. In addition, the book explicitly addresses the fundamental question raised by Paul Shepard's work: What can we do to recreate a life more in tune with our genetic roots? In this book, Paul Shepard presents concrete suggestions for fostering the kinds of ecological settings and cultural practices that are optimal for human health and well-being.
Coming Home to the Pleistocene is a valuable book for those familiar with the life and work of Paul Shepard, as well as for new readers seeking an accessible introduction to and overview of his thought.

Then follow as he shows how you can turn the tables to work the markets to your own advantage. "If you approach day trading the same way that you approach investing, you are sure to lose money," Farrell warns in The Day Trader's Survival Guide."One of the early mistakes that novice traders make is that they get caught up in the hype of the online trading revolution. Just because you can get a trade executed in a second with the click of a mouse, does not mean that you are on a level playing field with the rest of Wall Street. Remember, all of Wall Street is out to take your money."

Logic: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA(2000-11-13) | ISBN:0192893203 | DJVU | 1.5 Mb | 144 pages
Logic is often perceived as having little to do with the rest of philosophy, and even less to do with real life. In this lively and accessible introduction, Graham Priest shows how wrong this conception is. He explores the philosophical roots of the subject, explaining how modern formal logic deals with issues ranging from the existence of God and the reality of time to paradoxes of probability and decision theory.
