Ron Pernick Clint Wilder , "The Clean Tech Revolution: The Next Big Growth and Investment Opportunity"
Collins (June 12, 2007) | ISBN: 006089623X | 320 pages | PDF | 2,5 Mb
Alternative energy, once the domain of hippies and off-the-grid fringe enthusiasts, has gone mainstream. Although technologies such as solar and wind power, plant-based fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel, and "green" buildings have become hip because of environmental awareness and global climate change, the real reason behind their increasing profile is economics. When clean energy sources begin to rival more traditional ones on a cost basis, which is beginning to happen now owing to advances related to the microchip and economies of scale, corporations will quickly begin to take notice. Although Pernick and Wilder state that they are not financial advisors, they profile the leading companies involved in the most promising of these alternative energies, which gives the reader a place to begin doing further research into investment opportunities. The book is an excellent update on the current state of the industry and a who's who of the companies poised to profit from this exciting array of technologies.

John S. Gulliver, "Introduction to Chemical Transport in the Environment"
Cambridge University Press; 1 edition (January 15, 2007) | ISBN: 052185850X | 298 pages | PDF | 2 Mb
This is a textbook for courses and independent study in environmental and chemical engineering, as well as in many other disciplines concerned with transport and diffusion of all manner of chemicals. Estimating the transport and fate of chemicals released into the environment is an interesting and challenging task. The global environment is large, on the chemical transport and fate scale. This text applies the mathematics of diffusion, turbulent diffusion and dispersion to the atmosphere, lakes, rivers, groundwater and the ocean, as well as transport between these media. The book follows a new educational paradigm of text books, in that it is based upon examples and case studies. The required theory is explained as a solution technique to solve the case studies and example problems. A large portion of the book is dedicated to examples and case studies, from which the important principles are derived.

Muslim Perceptions of Other Religions: A Historical Survey
Jacques Waardenburg | Oxford University Press | ISBN 0195104722 | 2005 Year | PDF | 1,91 Mb | 368 Pages

Reviews:

“* 'With masterly control he traces Muslim studies of other religions ... the history he sets out here will undoubtedly retain its authority for the foreseeable future' - Islam and Christian-Muslim relations

* 'the editor must have had some pretty demanding expectations of his authors because all the papers are as extensively referenced as is his own opening section. This concern with references is a further value of the book.' - Jorgen S. Nielsen, RRT, Vol.7, Iss.4, 9/00.

* 'The editor has done us an enormous service in putting this work together. It should become a key textbook in relevant university and college departments.' - Jorgan S. Nielsen RRT, Vol.7, Iss.4, 9/00.

Description:
Since its inception, Islam and its civilization have been in continuous relationships with other religions, cultures, and civilizations, including not only different forms of Christianity and Judaism inside and outside the Middle East, Zoroastrianism and Manicheism, Hinduism and even Buddhism, but also tribal religions in West and East Africa, in South Russia and in Central Asia, including Tibet. The essays collected here examine the many texts that have come down to us about these cultures and their religions, from Muslim theologians and jurists, travelers and historians, and men of letters and of culture.

Michael Abrash, "Michael Abrash's Graphics Programming Black Book (Special Edition)"
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books | ISBN: 1576101746 | 09 July 1997 | 4.9 MB | Pages: 1342 | PDF
Though much of the book (such as 8088/286/386 assembly language optimization and VGA graphics programming) is out-of-date by now, the reader can see some of the larger tendencies in the author's work over the years--a reliance on profiling in order to test code, and creative thinking to improve performance wherever possible.

This text features assembler optimization for a variety of problems including searching algorithms, and records the author's approaches to optimizing code for the evolving line of Intel CPUs, from the 8088 on to the early Pentium lines. The last few chapters of this book are more relevant, and include a series of explorations of some of the technology behind the popular Doom and Quake 3-D games by id Corporation (where the author worked).

Optimized solutions to 3-D graphics problems from texture mapping, hidden surface removal, and Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) trees are explained. Current gaming and 3-D technology, such as Direct3D and VRML is left out, but it's clear that game programmers like the author will continue to push the limits of current hardware technology in inventive ways. This book is clearly targeted at game developers and serious assembly language programmers, not for the general reader.

Michael J. Sammon, "Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis: Descriptions, Examples, and Code"
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521660653 | 15 April 2000 | 30.2 MB | Pages: 295 | PDF
This book offers guided access to a collection of algorithms for the digital manipulation and analysis of images. Written in classic "cookbook" style, it reflects the authors' long experience as users and developers of image analysis algorithms and software.

For each task, they present a description and implementation of the most suitable procedure in easy-to-use form. The algorithms range from the simplest steps to advanced functions not commonly available for Windows users. Each self-contained section treats a single operation (histogram evaluation, low-pass filtering, and edge detection, among others).

The coverage includes typical situations requiring that operation and then discusses the algorithm and implementation. Sections start with a header illustrating the nature of the procedure through a "before" and "after" pictorial example and a ready-reference that lists typical applications, keywords, and related procedures. Annotated references can be found at the end of each section. An accompanying CD-ROM contains a collection of C programs for carrying out the book's procedures.

Carl W. Hoagstrom, "Magill's Encyclopedia of Science: Animal Life"
Salem Press (April 2002) | ISBN: 1587650193 | 1820 pages | PDF | 22,7 Mb
This illustrated encyclopedia is a major revision and update of the six-volume Magill's Survey of Science: Life Science, published in 1991. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines in the life sciences, and most are affiliated with academic institutions. There are 385 signed main entries, ranging in length from 1000 to 3000 words each; 108 articles are updates from the previous edition, while 277 are new entries. The entries cover a wide variety of topics related to animal life and include articles on subjects such as biodiversity and defense mechanisms as well as those on specific species or individual animals. Each entry begins with ready-reference information and a list of principal terms with definitions. Species entries include a sidebar listing basic facts such as classification, geographical location, habitat, life span, and the anatomical features that make the species unique. The arrangement is strictly alphabetical, which means that specific animals or animal groups are intermingled with general topics, issues, and concepts; "cloning" is followed by "cockroaches," for instance, and "elk" by "embryology." This arrangement functions well for the intended audience of high school, undergraduate, and general readers but could prove frustrating for the younger student preparing a report on a specific animal. The illustrations consist of black-and-white photographs and are neither as numerous nor as exciting as those in Facts on File's three-volume The Encyclopedia of Mammals or DK's one-volume Animal, either of which is a better choice for libraries needing an animal encyclopedia only. The strength of the Magill's set is its comprehensive coverage of animal life science generally, not just individual animals. A worthwhile purchase for libraries needing this type of reference.

H. James Birx, "Encyclopedia of Anthropology"
Sage Publications, Inc (December 8, 2005) | ISBN: 0761930299 | 2500 pages | PDF | 102 Mb
*Starred Review* Despite the fact that the study of anthropology is well respected and time honored, there has been a peculiar gap in the reference literature. No general, multivolume encyclopedia has offered a broad overview of the subject. Existing encyclopedias, such as Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropology (Holt, 1996), cover one aspect of the discipline. Several other single-volume encyclopedias are more like dictionaries, an example being the Companion Encyclopedia of Anthropology: Humanity, Culture, and Social Life (Routledge, 2002). But there has been nothing quite like this new Encyclopedia of Anthropology from Sage.

Five substantial volumes, with more than 1,000 entries, encompass information on all of the various aspects of the field. According to the accompanying literature, those are physical/biological anthropology, archaeology, cultural/social anthropology, linguistics, and applied anthropology. Articles on related topics such as biology, evolution, geology, paleontology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and theology are also included. Approximately 230 of the entries are biographical. The entries themselves are clearly written in language accessible for an undergraduate student or informed user but are substantial enough to be of value to the more advanced researcher.

The editorial attitude of the work seems totally in the camp of Darwinian evolution, in that the theories put forth by Darwin are valid and are well supported by the evidence available in the fossil record and the current state of development. However, other opinions are addressed. There is, for example, no entry on intelligent design (though there are several page references in the index), but there is one on Creationism, beliefs in and one on Non-Darwinian evolutionary mechanisms. Another controversy in anthropology, the issue of repatriation of artifacts, is presented most specifically in articles on Native peoples of the United States and Human rights in anthropology.

The volumes themselves are beautiful and a pleasure to use and read. The paper is thick and glossy, the bindings substantial. There is elegant and eye-catching use of color in the decorations at the top of the pages and as background for such elements as sidebars and bibliographies. Color pictures enhance the text. The volumes have all the features one has come to expect from a high-end encyclopedia: a list of contributors, a list of entries in alphabetical order and another list of entries in thematic groupings, cross-references and suggested additional reading, and a master bibliography. The only critical comment to be made is that the index refers only to page numbers without volume numbers, and there are no page ranges given on the spines of the volumes. The difficulty that this causes is somewhat balanced by having the entire index in each volume.

The Roly Poly Spider
E-book | PDF | 29 Pages | 25 MB | ISBN: 0590843893 | 1994

Editorial Reviews
“From Publishers Weekly
Using catchy verses that follow the rhyme scheme of "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider," Sardegna (K Is for Kiss Goodnight) presents a seemingly sunny tale which, on closer inspection, masks abundant unpleasantness. This yellow, appropriately bug-eyed spider appears jolly, but is in fact a selfish and crafty creature who lures bugs to her web by complaining of loneliness, engages them in friendly chat, then eats them. "She snagged a caterpillar/ and asked him, 'What's your name?'/ He said, 'My name is Lester./ I'm handsome as can be.'/ Said the roly-poly spider,/ 'You look like lunch to me.'" She's only following nature, of course, but her lack of menace and casual slaughter will likely disturb the book's intended audience-the cuddly victims here will evoke more sympathy than the eponymous protagonist. Unfortunately, Arnold's (Green Wilma) outwardly playful watercolor and colored- pencil compositions reinforce the mayhem of massacre, as they depict a half-eaten ladybug in the spider's mouth, a hapless "great big fly" ensnared between two pie crusts, etc. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1?This must be the Itsy Bitsy Spider's evil twin, craftily luring creatures into her sticky web. Once stuck, the victims are devoured in sadistic ways. The roly-poly arachnid eats a bee's knees, sticks a straw in a beetle for beetle juice, and creates a crunchy shoefly pie, among other things. Her ravenous appetite catches up with her, though, when she gets stuck in a water spout. Try singing the words of this funny picture book to the familiar tune; they're interchangeable. That fact alone makes Sardegna's book worth a try, but coupled with Arnold's cartoons, this offering is a real winner. Watercolor and colored-pencil artwork in bright yellows, greens, and lavenders give the story a lighthearted tone. The yellow spider is huge and sphere-shaped, with bulging eyes and diminutive legs. The art is a delight, right down to the webbed endpapers.?

Shirelle Phelps, "Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law "
Thomson Gale (November 2002) | ISBN: 078765759X | 1259 pages | PDF | 4,4 Mb
This work is designed for the layperson who wants background information about legal issues and procedures that affect our everyday lives. It is not a dictionary, although it includes a glossary, and it is not a do-it-yourself legal guide. Approximately 200 articles provide historical information, brief descriptions of relevant federal laws and regulations, variations in state and some local laws, directions to print and electronic sources of additional information, and contact details for potentially useful national and state organizations and agencies.

The articles are arranged in alphabetical order within broad categories, such as "Attorneys," "Consumer Issues," "Education," "Immigration," "Real Estate," and "Taxes." Some sections are surprisingly brief, while others are rather comprehensive. First Amendment Law merits only 3 pages, while Healthcare gets 70 and Internet gets 60. There is some unevenness in writing and editing. The article on international travel, for example, has several grammatical errors and still shows $400 as the maximum value of foreign-acquired goods to bring back duty-free. Otherwise, most of the information provided seems to be useful, and the editor offers the caveat to verify current status of laws and regulations and Web addresses.

Under Attorneys, there are suggestions for finding a good lawyer--and guidance regarding malpractice! The Automobiles entries include the basics for buying and leasing a vehicle, recommendations regarding insurance, and information on safety requirements (including seatbelts and child restraints). Immigration offers background material on asylum, deportation, and dual citizenship. Real estate provides the expected information on buying and selling property but includes sections on renters' liability, time-shares, and zoning as well. The section on Taxes explains how corporate and personal income taxes are structured, spells out what might be involved in an IRS audit, and shows sales tax rates by state. The index points to specific pages, but most users will find the comprehensive table of contents and the general arrangement by broad topic the easier way to find what they need.

Israeli F-15 Eagle Units in Combat (Osprey Combat Aircraft 67) by Shlomo Aloni (Author)
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (December 2006) | ISBN: 9781846030475 | PDF | 15,6 Mb | 96 pages
Thanks to foxtrot

About this book
Post-Yom Kippur War, Israel purchased the F-15 Eagle, the then world’s best air-to-air fighter, in an effort to prevent another surprise attack from the air. For the first time in its history the IDF/AF operated a fighter that was a full generation ahead of opposing interceptors in the region. The first ‘kill’ F-15 Baz (Buzzard) arrived in Israel in 1976 and soon proved its worth in combat. Israeli Baz pilots were credited with 12.5 kills between 1979 and 1981, with 33 victories following during the June 1982 Lebanon War. Despite substantial combat, no Israeli F-15 has ever been lost to enemy action. In the 1990s the US government supplied the IDF/AF with the F-15I Ra’am (Thunder) to fulfill the long-range surface-to-surface missile mission post-Desert Storm. From A to I, the extremely capable, and combat-tested, Israeli F-15 force will continue to deter potential enemies well into the foreseeable future. This book examines the history and development of these units.
