Moving to Sydney, Australia in 1987, in the interim 12 years he has produced an enormous volume of works centerpiece of which is the inspirational tetralogy - Atlantean Secrets. In that time he has also established a school of meditation and spirituality.

Sagan's writing career (15 books) began in non-fiction, making the transition to fiction with Atlantean Secrets, followed quickly by his sci-fi adventure Bleeding Sun. While Atlantean Secrets is focussed on the demise of the glorious epoch that proceeded our own, Bleeding Sun explores the future of virtual reality, fourth dimension and psychic warfare. All are packed with Sagan's visionary insights and predictions regarding the past and future histories of humanity.

In 14 chapters, these volumes cover broad concepts from "Afterlife Mysteries" to "Invaders from Outer Space." Each chapter begins with an overview and an outline of the topics and subtopics that are covered. Within the chapters, entries are generally arranged in alphabetical order. Each ends with a further reading list called "Delving Deeper." Glossaries are appended to each chapter and cumulated in volume 3. Occasional cross-references appear in bold type within the text to refer the reader to other entries, but since the set does not have a strict A-Z arrangement, one must use the index to determine where those entries are located. Because of the set's topical arrangement, the index is essential.
The Steigers, prolific writers on the paranormal, have written an encyclopedia for believers. The volumes are meant to "explore and describe the research of those who take such phenomena seriously." Almost everything from mediumship to crop circles is taken at face value. Even Houdini's attacks on phony mediums are interpreted to suggest he was taking on frauds and not real mediums. Fraud does not appear in the index, nor are alternate suggestions of how phenomena could have occurred presented. Only in a few instances is some skepticism applied.

The work covers material of interest to a large segment of the public in a way that is clear and readable. Many works in the "Delving Deeper" sections will provide the beginning student of the paranormal with good starting points. Recommended for medium-size to large public libraries and for academic libraries with comparative religion, folklore, and popular culture collections. RBB

Gr 9 Up-This expansive reference work examines over 200 cultural groups from the United States and Canada, arranged by 10 areas. Location, population, language, and a set of historical (precontact) topics are addressed for each nation. Archaeology and mythology are not discussed. The entries end with a brief examination of current legal and economic status as well as daily life. The division into "Historical Information" vs. "Contemporary Information" is frustrating, especially since religion and customs are placed in the former category. According to the introduction, the author's intention is to provide "a snapshot portrait of traditional society," but the treatment of modern practices is sometimes confusing. For example, Navajo religion is discussed as being practiced today while Anishinabe religion is strictly referred to in the past tense, implying that only the former religion is currently being practiced. Clearly the work seeks to support accurate and tactful research of Native American cultures, but these divisions and inconsistencies undermine that goal. Illustrations consist of attractive black-and-white photographs, with few of the national symbols and artwork patterns often required in reports. Information from dwellings to dress is provided, but students trying to draw a picture of the items may need further visual references. Featuring Native American groups from the northern reaches of Canada to the Rio Grande, this encyclopedia presents basic information about each tribal nation in a consistent manner. Organized geographically, each section begins with an introduction to the area and its original inhabitants. Tribal entries follow, with some smaller related groups discussed together. Each article includes sections on location, population, language, history, religion, government, customs, dwellings, diet, key technology, trade, notable arts, transportation, dress, and war/ weapons. A contemporary section follows, with information on government/reservations, economy, legal status, and daily life. Pritzker (the author of books on Ansel Adams, Mathew Brady, and Edward Curtis) is one of the few authors to attempt a work of this size alone. His presentation is even-handed, although some sections, like art, seem less thorough than others. Pritzker manages for the most part to avoid the extensive duplication found in the more expensive Gale Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (LJ 5/15/98), but a few small groups, such as the Shinnecock, are excluded. Articles do not have bibliographic references, and citations of books on individual tribes are not included in the bibliography. Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. The idea of this book is really quite simple. I’ve chosen the fifty best
sights based on my own lifetime of passionately seeking astronomical
wonders. I try to present them here through vivid detail and concise observing
instructions.Nothing could be more clear and simple, nor, if you wish to seek
the very heart of astronomy, any more desirable. This book offers to those seeking
the thrills of the heavens the most instant and immediately powerful gratification
of that desire possible from pages. It is, after all, astronomy honed down to
the most exciting experiences. Armchair astronomers will find all they need
to enjoy the heavens. Most people, however, will be motivated to action. They
will, I hope, be inspired, more electrifyingly than would otherwise be possible,
to get out and experience these wonders for themselves.
A remarkable thing about The 50 Best Sights in Astronomy is that no one seems
to have ever had this idea for a book before. Why did I stumble on the idea
when other people didn’t? I’ll offer my explanation in a moment.
First, I’d like to mention something else about this book that I think is
original and that you may find interesting. I’m talking about the criterion I’ve
used for determining the order in which the sights should be discussed. My
criterion is the width of the field of view necessary to enjoy the sight best.
The order is from the widest to the narrowest view. The first sight is that
of the entire starry sky on a clear night, preferably with no interfering moonlight
or city light pollution. This is a scene at least 180° wide—the angular
span of the entire dome of the sky. Of course, it’s not really possible to be so
precise as to determine that a slightly larger field of view is needed for enjoying
a bright star in its stellar setting as compared to a bright planet in its own
setting. So the book is divided into sections by width of field. The first section
includes sights that require a field ranging from that of the entire sky down
to 100 wide a broad. Each succeeding section zooms farther
in until we start looking at the magnified but also much narrower views
available through binoculars. And then the final section contains sights that
are the most magnified and narrow of all the ones viewed through telescopes.

My title may seem a bit surprising consdering the fact that NLP is all about tapping into your subconscious mind; however, Bandler hits home (and hits a home run) in not only stating various truths about how we think on a day-to-day basis, but in also providing the technology to “train your brain” to provide the results and the life you desire. At the time of this review, I haven’t worked on the recommended practices enough to qualify them (or to qualify myself, yet, for that matter), but I can say that I am extremely optimistic!!!
I have read numerous (again: numerous) self-help books that deal primarily/only with our conscious level of thinking, and having read Bandler, I now firmly believe that most (not all - most) self-help books that address the conscious level are worth next to nothing until one has addressed their subconscious. I was told, only today - by an NLP practitioner I have been seeing - that Bandler was once quoted as saying that “the conscious mind is the office boy; the subconscious is the CEO.” Bottom line? Buy it, highlight it to the max, and keep it handy as a reference guide. Most importantly (as I plan to do) - apply the matierial within! Good luck……. # 165 pages
