Subtle is the Lord: The Science and the Life of Albert Einstein
"A monument to sound scholarship and graceful style....Accurate, witty and clear as brook water, it is a work against which future scientific biographies will be measured."--The New York Times Book Review
"A marvelous new biography....Pais demonstrates an astute understanding of Einstein's discoveries....The finest Einstein biography yet published."--Science Digest
"A delightful and instructive book, perhaps the most sensitive and valuable scientific biography of Albert Einstein that has been published....Pais exhibits delicacy and sensitive judgment and succeeds in projecting an image that does justice to Einstein, the human being, and conveys the enormous appeal that Einstein had on those privileged to know him. All told, this is a fine book which will be a valuable addition to one's library."--Foundations of Physics
"A sympathetic but clear-eyed view of his life and work....examined mainly in his own plentiful papers, supplemented by a remarkably wide list of unusual sources....A fine book."--Scientific American
"An outstanding biography of Albert Einstein that one finds oneself reading with sheer pleasure....Pais has produced a lively book that is, at the same time, a major contribution to Einstein scholarship."--Physics Today
Product Description
Having the advantage of knowing Einstein personally during the last nine years of his life and having access to some of his 50,000 pages of letters and science papers, the author fills many gaps about what we know of Einstein's life. It deals with his interest in philosophy, his concern with Jewish destiny, and his opinions of great figures from Newton to Freud. Also depicts the state of physics at the turn of the century and how Einstein transformed the field.

"This lively and entertaining book tells "tales'' of Cardano, Galileo, Huygens, Pascal, Gauss.... The reasoning of the scientists discussed is modernized so as to ease the reader's path; thus this book is not a scholarly discussion of the history of science readable only by experts, but a far more valuable work: a readable introduction to the scientific work discussed and the historical context (both scientific and social) in which it took place. Addressed to a "general audience," it deserves to have a wide one.... The author's own lucid style and accurate presentation translated into a smoothly flowing English make this book one which many, from college student to professional, will no doubt read with pleasure and learning."Zentralblatt MATH
"The author discusses principal events in the history of science that deserve the attention of devotees of physics and mathematics. The discussion covers a time span of four centuries beginning with the sixteenth century.... The book is a lively account of the lives and achievements of scientists like Cardano, Tartaglia, Galileo, Huygens, Pascal and Gauss.... This book will be enjoyable reading for anyone interested in the history of science."Mathematical Reviews
"[T]he work is engagingly written and will be enjoyed by those who love mathematics and physics. The rather mathematically sophisticated treatment of some sections will be heavy going for many American readers, but well worthwhile for those whose mastery of geometry and algebra is solid.... The book will be of particular interest to college students majoring in mathematics or physics and to high school students who are enthusiastic about mathematics
. Particularly suitable for the general collections of college libraries and for the libraries of superior high schools."Choice
"[This is a] readable, informal set of biographical vignettes.... Aimed at the general reader with some background in mathematics, the book's style is to discuss the circumstances that surrounded these great scientists and to give insight into their contributions to science. The discoveries themselves are explained clearly in modern notation, without detailed heuristic discussion, which is appropriate for the casual reader; those needing more historical specificity can look elsewhere. The evolution of research and the dissemination of discoveries are followed and permit interesting comparison.... In sum, this collection is recommended, particularly for its insights."Edward Paul, Science Books & Films
"Tales of Mathematicians and Physicists is a worthwhile book to read, especially for novices
. But its fun for everyone, and enlightening.
its especially pleasant to encounter old heroes again and, indeed, learn more about them much more, in fact: this is serious scholarship and the mathematics is very good. And it would be an easy task to adapt Tales of Mathematicians and Physicists for use as a supplementary text in a course
. Its a pleasure to recommend this book." (Michael Berg, MathDL, October, 2007)
From the reviews of the second edition:
"The text is based on various articles that appeared in the Soviet journal Quantum (Kvant). The presentation is mostly leisurely, and large parts of the book are accessible to talented high school students
. It is a wonderful book that I recommend to everyone interested in mathematics." (Franz Lemmermeyer, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1105 (7), 2007)
Product Description
This revised and greatly expanded second edition of the Russian text Tales of Mathematicians and Physicists contains a wealth of new information about the lives and accomplishments of more than a dozen scientists throughout five centuries of history: from the first steps in algebra up to new achievements in geometry in connection with physics. The heroes of the book are renowned figures from early eras, such as Cardano, Galileo, Huygens, Leibniz, Pascal, Euler, Lagrange, and Laplace, as well some scientists of last century: Klein, Poincaré, and Ramanujan.
A unique mixture of mathematics, physics, and history, this volume provides biographical glimpses of scientists and their contributions in the context of the social and political background of their times. The author examines many original sources, from the scientists research papers to their personal documents and letters to friends and family; furthermore, detailed mathematical arguments and diagrams are supplied to help explain some of the most significant discoveries in calculus, celestial mechanics, number theory, and mathematical physics. What emerges are intriguing, multifaceted studies of a number of remarkable intellectuals and their scientific legacy.
Written by a distinguished mathematician and accessible to readers at all levels, this book is a wonderful resource for both students and teachers and a welcome introduction to the history of science.

Tobias Dantzig , Joseph Mazur and Barry Mazur,
Number : The Language of Science, The Masterpiece Science Edition
Publisher: Pi Press | March 10, 2005 | 416 pages | ISBN: 0131856278 | PDF | 1,38 Mb
Descriptions :
It is the aim of this book to...present the evolution of number as the profoundly human story which it is.
-Tobias Dantzig
This is beyond doubt the most interesting book on the evolution of mathematics which has ever fallen into my hands. If people know how to treasure the truly good, this book will attain a lasting place in the literature of the world. The evolution of mathematical thought from the earliest times to the latest constructions is presented here with admirable consistency and originality and in a wonderfully lively style.
- Albert Einstein
Tobias Dantzig's Number: The Language of Science is one of the truly great classics of mathematical exposition, perhaps the most lucid history of the number concept ever written. Its republication should be a cause for celebration by every scientifically minded person, regardless of his or her mathematical background.
- Eli Maor, author of e: The Story of a Number and To Infinity and Beyond
Tobias Dantzig's Number is a classic. A fascinating account of the evolution of mathematics, it deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in the history of thought.
- Charles Seife, author of Zero and Alpha and Omega
A classic! Anyone interested in the history of numbers and mathematics should read this book.""
- Mario Livio, author of The Golden Ratio
From the rudimentary mathematical abilities of prehistoric man to the counterintuitive and bizarre ideas at the edges of modern math, this masterpiece of science writing tells the story of mathematics through the history of its most central concept: number.
Dantzig succeeds in his aim to reveal a human story, and in making that story accessible to the non-expert. In his friendly and welcoming style, he shows how math developed from basic faculties present in us all, beginning with our ""number sense""¿the ability to discern that an object has been added to or removed from a small collection of objects without counting. The subsequent evolution of the concept of number is inextricably linked with the history of human culture, as Dantzig demonstrates. He shows how advances in math were spurred by the demands of growing commerce in the ancient world; how the pure speculation of philosophers and religious mystics contributed to our understanding of numbers; how the exchange of ideas between cultures in times of war and imperial conquest fueled advances in knowledge; and, ultimately, how the forces of history combine with human intuition to trigger revolutions in thought.
Sweeping in scope, Number is an open doorway into the world of math. Dantzig explains the foundations of mathematics with ease, and eloquently explores deeper philosophical questions that arise along the way. He describes the properties of all kinds of numbers¿integers, primes, irrationals, transcendentals, and more. He explains the significance of zero, and shows that its invention had revolutionary consequences for arithmetic. He shows how the invention of symbols for use in algebra¿a radical departure from tradition at the time¿ushered in a new era of math; how arithmetic and geometry reflect each other; and how calculus uses infinity to model the continuity of space and time.
With a new afterword, notes section, and bibliography written by math professor and author Joseph Mazur, and a new foreword by mathematician Barry Mazur, the Masterpiece Science edition of Number¿which was first published in 1930 is the first update of Dantzig's classic work in over fifty years. It is a story that ranges from the dawn of man to the genius of history's greatest mathematicians, vividly revealing how the pursuit of knowledge transcends the rise and fall of civilizations."

Alchemy as a philosophical and spiritual discipline
Alchemy was known as the spagyric art after Greek words meaning to separate and to join together. Compare this with the primary dictum of Alchemy in Latin: SOLVE ET COAGULA Separate, and Join Together.
The best-known goals of the alchemists were the transmutation of common metals into gold (called chrysopoeia) or silver (less well known is plant alchemy, or "spagyric"); the creation of a "panacea," or the elixir of life, a remedy that supposedly would cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely; and the discovery of a universal solvent.[1] Although these were not the only uses for the science, they were the ones most documented and well known. Starting with the Middle Ages, Arabic and European alchemists invested much effort on the search for the "philosopher's stone", a legendary substance that was believed to be an essential ingredient for either or both of those goals. The philosopher's stone was believed to mystically amplify the user's knowledge of alchemy so much that anything was attainable. Alchemists enjoyed prestige and support through the centuries, though not for their pursuit of those goals, nor the mystic and philosophical speculation that dominates their literature. Rather it came from their mundane contributions to the "chemical" industries of the dayore testing and refining, metalworking, production of gunpowder, ink, dyes, paints, cosmetics, leather tanning, ceramics, glass manufacture, preparation of extracts, liquors, and so on (it seems that the preparation of aqua vitae, the "water of life", was a fairly popular "experiment" among European alchemists).
Starting with the Middle Ages, some alchemists increasingly came to view metaphysical aspects as the true foundation of alchemy; and organic and inorganic chemical substances, physical states, and molecular material processes as mere metaphors for spiritual entities, spiritual states and ultimately, spiritual transformations. In this sense, the literal meanings of 'Alchemical Formulas' were a blind, hiding their true spiritual philosophy, which being at odds with the Medieval Christian Church was a necessity that could have otherwise lead them to the "stake and rack" of the Inquisition under charges of heresy.[2] Thus, both the transmutation of common metals into gold and the universal panacea symbolized evolution from an imperfect, diseased, corruptible and ephemeral state towards a perfect, healthy, incorruptible and everlasting state; and the philosopher's stone then represented some mystic key that would make this evolution possible. Applied to the alchemist himself, the twin goal symbolized his evolution from ignorance to enlightenment, and the stone represented some hidden spiritual truth or power that would lead to that goal. In texts that are written according to this view, the cryptic alchemical symbols, diagrams, and textual imagery of late alchemical works typically contain multiple layers of meanings, allegories, and references to other equally cryptic works; and must be laboriously "decoded" in order to discover their true meaning.
Psychology
Alchemical symbolism has been occasionally used by psychologists and philosophers. Carl Jung reexamined alchemical symbolism and theory and began to show the inner meaning of alchemical work as a spiritual path[4][5]. Alchemical philosophy, symbols and methods have enjoyed something of a renaissance in post-modern contexts.[citation needed]
Jung saw alchemy as a Western proto-psychology dedicated to the achievement of individuation[6]. In his interpretation, alchemy was the vessel by which Gnosticism survived its various purges into the Renaissance.[7] In this sense, Jung viewed alchemy as comparable to a Yoga of the East. The practice of Alchemy seemed to change the mind and spirit of the Alchemist. His interpretation of Chinese alchemical texts in terms of his analytical psychology also served the function of comparing Eastern and Western alchemical imagery and core concepts and hence its possible inner sources (archetypes).[8] [9][citation needed]
Magnum opus
The Great Work; mystic interpretation of its three stages:[10]
* nigredo(-putrefactio), blackening(-putrefaction): individuation, purification, burnout of impurity; see also Suns in alchemy - Sol Niger
* albedo, whitening: spiritualisation, enlightenment
* rubedo, reddening: unification of man with god, unification of the limited with the unlimited.
Within the Magnum Opus, was the creation of the Sanctum Moleculae, that is the 'Sacred Masses' that were derived from the Sacrum Particulae, that is the 'Sacred Particles', needed to complete the process of achieving the Magnum Opus.

This novel contains a couple of plot twists that are really, really cool, and the textured layers of the characters, their multiple names and the depths of their backgrounds indicate that Koontz is onto something profound in this novel.... namely the existence of a soul and how that soul transmits through multiple lives.
This is a profound novel from a writer who has mastered the elements of suspense, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This new book, first in the Academy series, is the official guide to the
ASD exam, priming candidates for the exam, explaining exactly what they
need to know. The Primer explains the knowledge tested in the Accredited
Symbian Developer exam, identifying and explaining the topics examined.
Each of the exam's objectives is succinctly described, with the
appropriate concepts explained in detail. Both standard C++ and topics
specific to Symbian C++, such as Symbian Types and Declarations,
Platform Secuirty, and Cleanup Stack, are covered. The authors are
experts in the field of Symbian C++ and contributed extensively to the
design and creation of questions for the ASD exam. Jo Stichbury is the
author of Symbian OS Explained and both authors are, of course, fully
qualified Accredited Symbian Developers.

Description
Beginning with a basic primer on reverse engineering-including computer internals, operating systems, and assembly language-and then discussing the various applications of reverse engineering, this book provides readers with practical, in-depth techniques for software reverse engineering. The book is broken into two parts, the first deals with security-related reverse engineering and the second explores the more practical aspects of reverse engineering. In addition, the author explains how to reverse engineer a third-party software library to improve interfacing and how to reverse engineer a competitor's software to build a better product. * The first popular book to show how software reverse engineering can help defend against security threats, speed up development, and unlock the secrets of competitive products * Helps developers plug security holes by demonstrating how hackers exploit reverse engineering techniques to ***** copy-protection schemes and identify software targets for viruses and other malware * Offers a primer on advanced reverse-engineering, delving into ""disassembly""-code-level reverse engineering-and explaining how to decipher assembly language

Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies: A Guide to Language for Fun and Spite by June Casagrande
Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics) (March 28, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0143036831
ISBN-13: 978-0143036838
Editorial reviews:
From Publishers Weekly
Hoping to make grammar both accessible and amusing, Casagrande offers practical and entertaining lessons on common uses and unfortunate abuses of the English language. The author, a southern California newspaper columnist, memorably delineates "who" and "whom"; "can" and "may"; "affect" and "effect"; and provides pithy primers on the perennially problematic dark alleys of language (subjunctives, how to use punctuation marks around quoted material, possessive gerunds). In brief, cleverly titled sections, she addresses a slew of grammar and punctuation questions: "To Boldly Blow" examines the issue of split infinitives, "Snobbery Up With Which You Should Not Put" tackles prepositions and "Is That a Dangler in Your Memo or Are You Just Glad to See Me?" pokes fun at dangling modifiers and the confusion they create. By also touching on e-mail and text messaging, where traditional rules are commonly ignored, Casagrande keeps the discussion current. She maintains her sass and her sense of humor throughout, at one point calling the hyphen "a nasty, tricky, evil little mark that gets its kicks igniting arguments...the Bill Maher of punctuation." Readers intimidated by style manuals and Lynne Truss will enjoy this populist grammar reference.

Lay, lie, lain? Drink, drank, drunken? The slightest perceived misuse of English, or American, can rouse the ire of the "grammar snobs," who delight in savaging those who dare sully the language. Through the delightful voice of Shelly Frasier, author Casagrande gives listeners a set of arrows with which to pierce the grammar snobs' inflated sense of self-importance, using liberal doses of humor. Thanks to Frasier's sharp comic timing, you'll get the full effect of the author's self-effacing exposÉ of grammatical crime--and be relieved to know most of the mistakes you've been accused of making are usually misdemeanors. Becoming aware of the vast gray zone of usage makes the English language a friendlier place. D.J.B.

Completely revised and updated, the new edition of this groundbreaking text integrates basic virology with pathophysiological conditions to examine the connection between virology and human disease. Most virology textbooks focus on the molecular biology involved without adequate reference to physiology. This text focuses on viruses that infect humans, domestic animals and vertebrates and is based on extensive course notes from James Strauss' virology class at the California Institute of Technology taught for over 30 years. Expertly depicting in color the molecular structure and replication of each virus, it provides an excellent overview for students and professionals interested in viruses as agents of human disease.
* Includes over 30% new material - virtually all of the figures and tables have been redrawn to include the latest information and the text has been extensively rewritten to include the most up-tp-date information
* Includes a new chapter on emerging and reemerging viral diseases such as avian flu, SARS, the spread of West Nile virus across America, and the continuing spread of Nipah virus in Southeast Asia.
* Further reading sections at the end of each chapter make it easy find
key references
* World maps depicting the current distribution of existing and newly emerging viruses are also incorporated into the text
* A companion website features illustrations for use in class notes and presentations. Annotation Audience: Advanced undergraduate and graduate students in virology, molecular biology, and microbiology.

In this book we are going to tell you about a creature that you know quite well, that you meet everywhere without actually giving it much attention, that is highly skillful, highly social and highly intelligent - "The Ant". Our aim is to review the lives full of miracles of these minute creatures that are never of any significance in our daily lives. Technology, collective work, military strategy, advanced communications network, an astute and rational hierarchy, discipline, perfect city planning
These are fields where human beings may not always be successful enough, but where the ants always are. When you look at these creatures, which are fully armed to defeat tough rivals and to endure the difficult conditions of nature, you may think that all of them are identical. However, each species of the ant genus and there are thousands of them has, in fact, different characteristics. We believe that these creatures that have the highest population in the world may open up new horizons for us within the framework of the characteristics referred to above. This book will reveal to us the special and marvelous world of ants. We shall witness the things these ant communities succeed with their tiny bodies and witness that there is absolutely no difference between their fossils, the oldest of which is about 80 million years old, and their counterparts living today, that run to approximately 8800 species.

Volume 1: From the Black Sox Scandal to the Attica Prison Riots
Volume 2: From Pine Ridge to Abu Ghraib
The public seems fascinated by crime. News and popular media sources provide a steady diet of stories, footage, and photographs about the misfortunes of others in order to satisfy this appetite. Murder, rape, terrorism, gang-related activities, and other violent crimes are staples. Various crime events are presented in the news every day, but most of what is covered is quickly forgotten. In contrast, some crimes left a lasting impression on the American psyche. Some examples include the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the bombing of the Murrah building in Oklahoma City, and the September 11th attacks. These events, and other significant cases, are immediately or on reflection talked about as crimes of the century. They earn this title not only because they generate enormous publicity, but because of their impact on American culture: they help define historical eras, influence public opinion about crime, change legal process, and focus concern about important social issues. They seep into many other shared aspects of social life: public conversation, fiction and nonfiction, songs, poems, films, and folk tales. This set focuses on the many crimes of the century of the last 100 years. In vivid detail, each crime is laid out, the investigation is discussed, the media reaction is described, the trial (if there was one) is narrated, the resolution is explored, and the significance of the case in terms of its social, political, popular, and legal relevance is examined. Illustrations and sidebars are scattered throughout to enliven the text; print and electronic resources for further reading and research are offered for those wishing to dig deeper. Cases include the Scopes Monkey trial, Ted Bundy, Timothy McVeigh, O.J. Simpson, Leopold and Loeb, Fatty Arbuckle, Al Capone, JonBenet Ramsey, the Lacy Peterson murder, Abu Ghraib, Columbine and more.

Introduction
Petroleum-based fuels are well-established products that have served industry and consumers for more than 100 years. For the foreseeable future automotive fuels will still be largely based on liquid hydrocarbons. The specifications of such fuels will however continue to be adjusted as they have been and are still being adjusted to meet changing demands from consumers. Traditional crude oil refining underwent increasing levels of sophistication to produce fuels of appropriate specifications. Increasing operating costs continuously put pressure on refining margins but it remains problematic to convert all refinery streams into products with acceptable specifications at a reasonable return. However, the time is running out and petroleum, once considered inexhaustible, is now being depleted at a rapid rate. As the amount of available petroleum decreases, the need for alternate technologies to produce liquid fuels that could potentially help prolong the liquid fuels culture and mitigate the forthcoming effects of the shortage of transportation fuels that has been suggested to occur under the Hubbert peak oil theory (Hirsch, 2005). To mitigate the influence of the oil peak and the subsequent depletion of supplies, unconventional (or nonpetroleum derived) fuels and synthetic fuels are becoming major issues in the consciousness of oil importing countries. On the other hand, synthetic fuels, such as gasoline and diesel from other sources, are making headway into the fuel balance. For example, biodiesel from plant sources is similar to diesel, but has differences that include higher cetane rating (4560 compared to 4550 for petroleum-derived diesel) and it acts as a cleaning agent to get rid of dirt and deposits. As with alcohols and petrol engines, taking advantage of biodiesels high cetane rating potentially overcomes the energy deficit compared to ordinary number 2 diesel. For example, coal (coal-to-liquids), natural gas (gas-to-liquids), and oil shale (shaleto- liquids) have been touted for decades. At this time, the potential for liquid fuels from various types of biomass (Chap. 8) is also seeing prominence. Shortages of the supply of petroleum and the wish for various measures of energy independence are a growing part of the national psyche of many countries. However, the production of liquid fuels from sources other than petroleum has a checkered history. The on-again-off-again efforts that are the result of political maneuvering has seen to it that the race to secure self-sufficiency by the production of nonconventional fuels has never got much further than the starting gate! This is due in no small part to the price fluctuations of crude oil (currently in excess of $90 per barrel) and the lack of foresight by various levels of government. It must be realized that for decades the price of petroleum has always been maintained at a level that was sufficiently low to discourage the establishment of a synthetic fuels industry. However, we are close to the time when the lack of preparedness for the production of nonconventional fuels may set any national government on its heels. In the near term, the ability of conventional fuel sources and technologies to support the global demand for energy will depend on how efficiently the energy sector can match available energy resources with the end user and how efficiently and cost effectively the energy can be delivered. Watchmen is set in 1985, in an alternate history of the United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union; throughout the books, the Doomsday Clock is shown gradually ticking towards midnight. It tells the story of a group of past and present heroes and superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts heroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neuroses and failings, and whowith one notable exceptionlack anything immediately recognizable as accepted super powers. Watchmen's deconstruction of the conventional superhero archetype, combined with its innovative adaptation of cinematic techniques and heavy use of symbolism, multi-layered dialogue, and metafiction, has influenced both comics and film.Watchmen is a twelve-issue limited series

Johnson (history, Univ. of Northern Iowa), who has written several books on the history of U.S. law, including The Struggle for Student Rights, here uses a scholarly analysis of both state and national cases to show how the legal system affects our lives. Approximately a fifth of the 201 essays are new to this revised second edition, which follows the first by a decade. The essays, which vary in length depending upon the significance of their subjects, focus on five main categories: crime and criminal law; governmental organization, power, and procedure; economics and economic regulation; civil liberties; and race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability. These pieces usually examine 20th-century political and legal change as a byproduct of social and economic matters. Providing clear analysis and a good selection of issues related to U.S. law, especially in the last decade, this reference will be useful for students and nonspecialists looking for substantial background to help them understand the implications of important legal cases. Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries. Steven Puro, St. Louis Univ.

From Booklist
Historic U.S. Court Cases offers 201 signed essays by political scientists, historians, and legal scholars that highlight major legal issues in five thematic areas: crime and criminal law; governmental organization, power, and procedure; economics and economic regulation; race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability; and civil liberties. Essays generally focus on one or two U.S. Supreme Court cases, although influential cases decided by lower federal courts, the colonial courts, and state courts are also covered. These range from the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials to the O.J. Simpson criminal and civil trials in California state court in the mid-1990s. Landmark cases are the subject of a number of the essays (e.g., Miranda v. Arizona, Roe v. Wade), but many lesser-known cases that are representative of a large body of litigation are included, as well as some, like Jerry Tarkanian's suit against the NCAA, that show "eccentricities in the American legal past."
Essays are arranged chronologically within each thematic area and provide the historical and social context, as well as the case's legal significance. Each essay begins with "the case in brief," which outlines the date, location, court, principal participants, and significance of the case. The essays vary in length from 1,000 words for "lesser" cases to 2,000 words for cases of "medium-level significance" and 5,000 words for cases of "monumental importance." Each concludes with a brief bibliography. Following the entries are an index of cases and a subject and name index.
This edition contains 43 new essays, half treating cases decided since the publication of the first edition in 1992 and half analyzing older cases. United States v. Microsoft Corporation, Bush v. Gore, and Clinton v. Jones are among the topics of new essays. Most of the essays included in the first edition have been updated by the authors. Format changes in the second edition make it more readable, and the new "Case in Brief" feature offers the user a quick overview. Students and researchers in political science and history, as well as law, will find the encyclopedia useful, and it is recommended for public, academic, and law school libraries. A similar title, Gale's Great American Court Cases (1999), treats 800 cases and is appropriate for high-school as well as academic and public libraries. RBB

This book provides a solid overview of mobile phone programming
targeting both academia and industry. The book covers all commercial
realizations of Symbian, Windows Mobile and Linux platforms. Each
programming language (JAVA, Python, C/C++) and a set of development
environments are introduced step by step making developers familiar with
current limitations, pitfalls, and challenges. Each chapter contains
examples and source code to rapidly make developers familiar with the
most important concepts. Examples cover peer to peer networks,
cooperative networking, cross layer protocol design, key challenges such
as power consumption, and sensor networks for which a full hardware and
software implementation is provided. The books DVD contains all
presented development environments and source code examples. Whether you
are an experienced developer or an advanced student this book will be
your key reference for successfully entering the world of software
development for mobile devices.

An Introduction to the Visual System
Building on the successful formula of the first edition, Martin Tovée offers a concise but detailed account of how the visual system is organised and functions to produce visual perception. He takes his readers from first principles; the structure and function of the eye and what happens when light enters, to how we see and process images, recognise patterns and faces, and through to the most recent discoveries in molecular genetics and brain imaging, and how they have uncovered a host of new advances in our understanding of how visual information is processed within the brain. Incorporating new material throughout, including almost 50 new images, every chapter has been updated to include the latest research, and culminates in helpful key points, which summarise the lessons learnt. This book is an invaluable course text for students within the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology and physiology.

Emergency Management of Infectious Diseases
Emergency Management of Infectious Diseases
Publisher:Cambridge University Press | Pages:600 | 2008-06-30|ISBN:052187176X | PDF | 9.1 MB
Infectious disease ranks only behind trauma in the prevalence of cases seen on a daily basis in the emergency room and takes lives from every culture and socioeconomic class. The changing epidemiology of infectious diseases is a considerable challenge to any physician, as acute, nearly eradicated, and tropical diseases now enter American emergency rooms on a daily basis. This book is a new clinically oriented reference book for the management of such infections in the emergency room and focuses on all diagnostic protocols and treatment strategies that emergency room physicians need to be proficient when managing patients battling infectious disease. The orientation of the book is uniquely organ-based, with coverage of all viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic disease. The narrative is supplemented with explanatory photos, diagnostic tables, and charts of drug regimens and will prove an invaluable reference for physicians confronting the various manifestations of infectious disease.

This 160 page long photography ebook was compiled by Chris Weeks, a professional photographer living and working in Los Angeles
"Its not meant to take a beginner from just getting a camera in their hands and going out to make surreptitious street photographs. Certain people expect certain things from me. When I first conceived this and started writing then asked others for collaboration it was meant for a certain audience. Not the big-picture audience. Just those who love making street photographs and looking at material by other street photographers."

I've been researching and writing on all aspects of training, diet and nutrition for almost 40 years. In fact my Anabolic Diet written for bodybuilders was the first cycling phase shift diet book out there.
But it was only a how to book, with very little information on the science behind the diet, and how it could be adjusted to different metabolic types. It didn't take into account the proven gene-diet interactions, and as such the differences in our ability to efficiently handle the use of fat as a primary energy source, or the effects of carb intake on both dietary and body fat oxidation.
The Metabolic Diet addresses these deficiencies and much more including why, how and when to take certain nutritional supplements for the best anabolic, anticatabolic and fat burning effects. Because its so complete, the Metabolic Diet is the only diet and nutrition book you need.
It encompasses all the various diets that are carbohydrate conscious, those that are champions of low dietary carbohydrate intake to one degree or another such as my Anabolic Diet, and those that follow the more conventional high complex carbohydrate, lower fat approach. The Metabolic Diet is based not only on my experiences but also on all the available medical and scientific research.
That's what makes it the ultimate diet book. It takes into account our genetic and environmental differences and allows everyone to find the right diet and nutritional supplement stack for them. By applying the principles of the Metabolic Diet you will learn how to adjust your macronutrient and supplement intake so that it suits your metabolism and gives you the best results.
The Metabolic Diet is the Holy Grail of diets and your one-stop solution to the age-old dieting dilemma.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale is one of the most influential voices on diet, performance and athletic training in the world.
Background
Dr. Di Pasquale is presently a licensed physician in Ontario, Canada, and for the last three decades has specialized in Bariatric (treatment of obesity) and Sports Medicine.
He holds an honors degree in biological science, majoring in molecular biochemistry and genetics (1968), and a medical degree (1971) - both from the University of Toronto. He is certified as a Medical Review Officer (MRO) by the Medical Review Officer Certification Council (MROCC), and as a Master of Fitness Sciences (MFS) by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). He is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine.
He was an assistant professor at the University of Toronto for ten years (1988 to 1998) lecturing and researching on athletic performance, nutrition, nutritional supplements, and drug use in sports.
He was a world-class athlete for over twenty years, winning the world championships in Powerlifting in 1976, and the World Games in the sport of Powerlifting in 1981. He was Canadian champion eight times, Pan American champion twice, and North American champion twice. He is the first Canadian Powerlifter to become a World Champion and first Canadian Powerlifter to total 10 times bodyweight in any weight class and he's the only Canadian to ever total ten times bodyweight in two weight classes.
Over the last four decades he has had extensive exposure to athletic injuries and disabilities, and ergogenic and nutritional supplement use by athletes. As well, he operated a Sports Medicine, Nutrition and Bariatric clinic for over three decades. He has been chairman/member of several national and international powerlifting, bodybuilding and Olympic weight lifting sports federation medical committees. Over this period of time he has acted as a consultant, medical advisor, drug testing officer and technical expert on the pharmacology and pathophysiology of sports, nutritional supplement use and drug testing.
He was the Medical Director to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF) and the acting MRO for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). At present he is the President of the fledgling United World Powerlifting Federation (www.UWPF.com) and the Pan American (North, Central and South America, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean Islands) Powerlifting Federation (www.PanAmPL.com). He has written several books, many of which have been translated into various languages, dealing with diet, nutritional supplements and the use of ergogenic aids by athletes. Earlier books included Drug Use and Detection in Amateur Sports, Beyond Anabolic Steroids, and Anabolic Steroid Side Effects, Fact, Fiction and Treatment.
In the past three decades plus, he has been on several Editorial Boards for various fitness and strength magazines. He was the Editor-in-Chief of a peer reviewed, quarterly international newsletter titled Drugs in Sports, published by Decker. This newsletter was published in English, Spanish and Italian. He was also Editor-in-Chief of a bimonthly newsletter titled the Anabolic Research Review. Both newsletters contained information on drug testing and the use of drugs and nutritional supplements by athletes.
In 1995 he wrote two books. One of these books, the Bodybuilding Supplement Review is a review of nutritional supplements and the other, the Anabolic Diet, described an earlier version of his Metabolic Diet. This diet was aimed at bodybuilders and strength athletes. Both books were written to provide information to athletes on how to increase muscle mass and strength and decrease body fat, and to offer an alternative to drug use.
In 1997 he wrote Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete - The Anabolic Edge published by CRC Press was released in October 1997. The new edition of this popular book, due to be published in December of 2007, has been completely rewritten to bring it totally up tod date and is double the size and with double the references. For more information go to He has also written and is in the process of writing chapters for several books on nutrition, sports medicine, substance abuse, fitness and weight training. At present he is working on several other books including a comprehensive nutritional supplement manual.
In the past thirty-five years he has written a few thousand articles on training, diet, nutritional supplements, and drug use in sports for many magazines and association journals. He has written for and had regular monthly columns in all the popular bodybuilding and fitness journals including Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Men's Fitness, Shape, Muscle Media, Muscle Mag International, IronMan, Powerlifting USA and many smaller publications.
From 1996 to 1999 he was involved in writing, research and product development for Experimental and Applied Sciences (EAS) and Muscle Media, and was a member of the EAS Scientific Advisory Panel. He has contributed chapters on ergogenic aids, diet and nutritional supplements to dozens of fitness, weight and sports medicine books as well as books on anabolic steroids and substance abuse. For example he contributed the chapter on Anabolic Steroids in The Handbook of Substance Abuse, 1998 and edited by Tarter et al., as well as chapters on nutrition appears in Energy-Yielding Macronutrients and Energy Metabolism in Sports Nutrition and in Nutritional Applications in Exercise and Sport, both edited by Judy A. Driskell and Ira Wolinsky and published in 2000 and 2001 respectively by CRC Press.
His latest collaborative effort, written along with Tudor Bompa and Lorenzo Cornacchia, is the second edition of Serious Strength Training released by Human Kinetics in late 2002. In the past three decades he has been on several Editorial Boards for various fitness and strength magazines and was the Editor-in-Chief of a two quarterly international newsletter on sports nutrition and ergogenic aids.
He holds seminars and lecture all over the world on diet, nutritional supplements and training. In the past he has lectured and held seminars in dozens of cities in North America, and all over the world. He also formulates engineered, cutting edge, scientifically validated nutritional supplements for various companies that are sold under their specific labels. He has developed a number of nutritional supplements over the past few decades, working on his own and with various supplement companies including EAS, Weider, Basic Research, Euthenics International, and Optimum Training Systems.
For example, he formulated a new group of nutritional supplements meant to combat nighttime post absorptive catabolism and enhance the anabolic and recuperative effects of sleep. He is now working on developing specific nutriceuticals along with some prominent researchers from the US and several other countries. Those in the US include doctors at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
He acts as an international consultant and expert witness for amateur and professional athletes and sports bodies, private corporations and companies, and government agencies on all aspects of training, nutrition and supplementation and on legal matters relating to nutritional supplements, and the use and abuse, and drug testing of anabolic steroids, growth hormone and other ergogenic drugs.
About ten years ago Dr. Di Pasquale formed his own nutritional company and formulated a complete nutritional supplement line, which now includes over 25 cutting edge products designed to work with the Metabolic Diet and to maximize body composition (the amount of fat and muscle in the body the idea for most of us is to minimize weight and body fat but not muscle mass), athletic performance and the beneficial effects of exercise.
These formulations were done using the latest scientific and medical information, along with the knowledge and expertise he has accumulated in the last four decades. He uses the best ingredients available regardless of costs to form products that are superior to any on the market today. These supplements, plus his book, The Metabolic Diet, and now the Radical Diet, with the 3rd edition out in the summer of 2007, along with related books and ebooks (MD+ Home), form the nutritional backbone of some of his new international ventures.
His MD+ line of nutritional supplements are available in many parts of the world, including North America, Japan, and most of Europe, and are featured on his two major web sites, MD+ Home and www.CoachSOS.com. The goal of these sites, and several others including The Radical Diet, FemmeBody: Health, Weight and Fat Loss, and Training for Women, Welcome to the Boomer Solution and Longevity Solution is to provide specific and detailed training, diet and nutritional supplement schedules for all athletes and for anyone who just want to lose some weight and/or body fat.
His "Solution" series of books and ebooks center on the use of the Metabolic Diet and nutritional supplements for various sports and for fat loss in both men and women. For example the Anabolic Solution for Bodybuilders, written for both recreational and competitive bodybuilders, is a cutting edge, training specific, diet and nutritional supplement guide geared to maximize muscle mass and minimize body fat.
All of the books in the Anabolic Solution series, by optimizing training, diet and nutritional supplement use, are meant to offer the athlete a drug free viable alternative to the dangerous use of ergogenic drugs such as anabolic steroids, growth hormone, IGF-I, clenbuterol, thyroid, insulin, and countless others.
His new Radical Diet Plan is meant for anyone wanting to quickly lose weight and body fat, both over the short-term and long-term, using a variation of the Metabolic Diet and his line of nutritional supplements for effective weight loss and weight management. Along with his emphasis on sports nutrition, body composition, and weight loss, he has recently developed an anti-aging line of supplements. Over a dozen supplements in the MD+ lineup supplements address the effects that stress and aging have on the mind and body, including InsideOut (a formulation to rejuvenate and heal skin, nails and hair), InControl (for increasing concentration, memory and cognition), TestoBoost, GHboost and Metabolic (for optimizing the sex hormones and insulin, thyroid, adrenal and pituitary function), LipoFlush (for weight and fat loss and maximizing body composition), Joint Support (for decreasing inflammation and degeneration, and increasing strength and function of joints, muscles and tendons), ReNew (for decreasing inflammation in the body, increasing immune function, and optimizing energy metabolism), Regulate (for maintaining bowel health and regularity) and the three foundation supplements, MVM, Antiox and EFA+ that lay the foundation for anyone interested in allaying the effects of aging.
Dr. Di Pasquale has also started up the Metabolic Diet Nutritional Certification Council, an international body that provides nutritional certification at several levels. For more information on the certifications go to www.MDNCC.com. The bottom line is that Dr. Di Pasquale is the most credible and qualified person on this planet to counsel you about weight and fat loss and on ways to maximize body composition and sports performance. He is also best qualified to formulate the most effective and safe nutritional supplements on this planet. And unlike many of the others involved in the weight loss industry, he's no flash in the pan but a pioneer in the weight loss and body composition field with expertise and experience spanning four decades

Teens love it. Parents hate it. Librarians are confused by it; and patrons are demanding it. Libraries have begun purchasing both manga and anime, particularly for their teen collections. But the sheer number of titles available can be overwhelming, not to mention the diversity and quirky cultural conventions. In order to build a collection, it is important to understand the media and their cultural nuances. Many librarians have been left adrift, struggling to understand this unique medium while trying to meet patron demands as well as protests. This book gives the novice background information necessary to feel confident in selecting, working with, and advocating for manga and anime collections; and it offers more experienced librarians some fresh insights and ideas for programming and collections. Topics covered include: a brief history of anime and manga in Japan and in the West; a guide to visual styles and cues; a discussion of common themes and genres unique to manga and anime; their intended audiences; cultural differences in format and content; multicultural trends that manga and anime readers embrace and represent; and programming and event ideas.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 UpWith about 400 articles from "Absorbent Materials" to "X-Rays in Diagnostic Medicine," this ambitious resource aims to survey all of the technology that had a mass impact on human society in the 20th century. The entries, averaging about 1000 words each, are mostly factual discussions of specific topics, with more generalized essays, such as "Gender and Technology" and "Technology and Ethics," occasionally stirred in. Each entry contains "see" references and further reading, plus, rarely, a diagram or black-and-white photo. Though well meant, this resource, with its unappealing format and occasionally outdated information (Japan's Nozomi space probe is mentioned, but not its December 2003 abandonment, for instance) makes, at best, a supplementary choice next to the mainstay McGraw-HillEncyclopedia of Science and Technology (2002).John Peters, New York Public Library

From Booklist
In this encyclopedia on the technology that significantly affected people in industrial societies in the twentieth century, entries fall within six broad areas: food, leisure, homes, health, work, and interrelations. The emphasis is on technologies that influenced people's lives rather than twentieth-century technological inventions; often technology exists for decades before evolving into something serviceable. Thus, expect to find entries on things like Dishwashers, for which patents were first filed in the mid-nineteenth century but that became devices with widespread use in the mid-twentieth century.
Written by scholars, the 400 alphabetically arranged entries are objective, 1,000-word narratives on individual technologies, objects, systems, or products. Coverage is heaviest in the areas of computers (Computers, analog; Global Positioning System; World Wide Web); health and medicine (Antibiotics, use after 1945; Dentistry; Intensive care and life support); and transportation (Air traffic control systems; Automobiles; Transport, foodstuffs). A further reading list of monographs, periodicals, and Internet sites follows each entry, as do see also references. There are 30 longer survey entries that explore broader questions of technological systems, such as Agriculture and food and Energy and power.
The scope is international, and the language, while sophisticated, is generally free enough of technical jargon for the serious student. Occasional black-and-white illustrations help to clarify the text. The index, however, is too broad. Names are largely excluded, as in the case of Dolly, the cloned sheep. Dolly is not indexed at all, and the closest subject in the index, cloning-animals, only references one of multiple relevant entries.
Topics such as artificial intelligence, mass spectrometry, and nanotechnology are also covered in any standard science and technology encyclopedia, including, for example, the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology (9th ed., McGraw-Hill, 2002) and Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia (9th ed., Wiley, 2003). Still, this set offers some unique content and emphasizes the humanistic element of technology. It is probably closest in scope to The Cutting Edge: An Encyclopedia of Advanced Technologies (Oxford, 2000), which features only 102 less-detailed entries on newsworthy technology and its impact on everyday life but at a much cheaper price. The Facts On File Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Society (1999) is also somewhat similar, but it lacks satisfactory further reading lists.
