Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars is a twelve-issue comic book limited series published from May 1984 to April 1985 by Marvel Comics. From July 1985 to March 1986, a sequel, Secret Wars II, was published.

A godlike cosmic entity called the Beyonder has been observing the Earth-616 universe - the mainstream Marvel universe. Fascinated by the presence of metahumans on Earth and their potential, this entity chooses a group of both superheroes and supervillains and teleports them (against their will) to "Battleworld", a planet created by the Beyonder in a distant galaxy, and stocked with alien weapons and technology. The Beyonder then issued the following decree: "I am from beyond! Slay your enemies and all that you desire shall be yours! Nothing you dream of is impossible for me to accomplish!"

Secret Wars II is a nine-issue comic book limited series and crossover published from 1985 to 1986 by Marvel Comics. The series was written by Marvel's then Editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and primarily pencilled by Al Milgrom.

The series was a sequel to original series Secret Wars, published in 1984 and 1985. The series tied-in with issues of other Marvel titles, with each "tie-in" featuring a "Secret Wars II" logo in the top right hand corner to indicate that it was a part of the overall story.

The entity that instigated the first Secret Wars, the Beyonder, visits Earth in search of enlightenment and inevitably comes into conflict with Earth's metahumans and the cosmic entities that exist in the Marvel Universe. The Beyonder is eventually dealt with, although the heroes also have to prevent the destruction of the planet as a consequence of his actions.

A sequel in the form of a single issue revealed that the Beyonder was an evolved cosmic cube and evolved into a being called Kosmos.

Praise for Fundamentals of WiMAX "This book is one of the most comprehensive books I have reviewed ... it is a must-read for engineers and students planning to remain current or who plan to pursue a career in telecommunications. I have reviewed other publications on WiMAX and have been disappointed. This book is refreshing in that it is clear that the authors have the in-depth technical knowledge and communications skills to deliver a logically laid out publication that has substance to it."
"This is the first book with a great introductory treatment of WiMAX technology. It should be essential reading for all engineers involved in WiMAX. The high-level overview is very useful for those with non-technical background. The introductory sections for OFDM and MIMO technologies are very useful for those with implementation background and some knowledge of communication theory. The chapters covering physical and MAC layers are at the appropriate level of detail. In short, I recommend this book to systems engineers and designers at different layers of the protocol, deployment engineers, and even students who are interested in practical applications of communication theory."

From Genesis to Genetics - The Case of Evolution and Creationism

University ofCalif ornia Press | ISBN: 0-520-22441-8 | Author: John A. Moore | English | PDF | 241 Pages | 2.38 MB

PREFACE
Of the three major conflicts between science and religion, two have already been settled. It is now generally accepted that the Earth is round, not flat, and that the Earth revolves around the sun, rather than the sun circling the Earth. The third major conflict concerns origins—the origins of the universe, the Earth, and all its living creatures. In Western culture until the middle of the nineteenth century the answer to the question of origins was divine creation as described in Genesis, the first book of the Judeo-Christian Bible. This explanation had satisfied most people in the West since the waning days of the Roman Empire. But in 1859, with the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, an alternative explanation for the origin of life’s diversity appeared, and this new view of life threw Western thought into a tailspin. Darwin proposed that the many different kinds of plants and animals we see around us have not been immutable since the beginning of time. Instead, they have changed
dramatically as the environment has changed, dividing again and again into new species that fill new niches, until—over vast periods of time—a huge number of different species has come into being. Darwin called this process evolution. The Origin immediately evoked an outcry in Darwin’s own Great Britain, as well as on the European continent and in the United States. Many people saw his radical theory as conflicting severely with the religious teachings of Genesis, as indeed it did—and still does. Divine creation is a supernatural concept that cannot be studied, proved, or disproved with the procedures of science. It is accepted on faith. In contrast, Darwin’s explanation for the diversity of life relied solely on natural processes, and therefore it could be tested, modified, and improved upon. As the nineteenth century progressed, more and more naturalists accepted evolution as an explanation for the great diversity of life because it cast so much light on a number of otherwise inexplicable puzzles in nature. Because naturalists study the life histories of plants and animals, it is not surprising that they were the first people to be persuaded by Mr. Darwin, a fellow naturalist. The various Christian denominations were much slower to appreciate his new theory, but by the second half of the twentieth century many of them also accepted evolution. And now, at the beginning of a new millennium, Pope John Paul II has decreed that evolution is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Still, a very large number of fundamentalist Christians continue to reject the scientific evidence for evolution and accept as fact the literal account of creation as described in Genesis. The tension between creationists and evolutionists has waxed and waned over the decades since Darwin first proposed his “dangerous idea,” but it is once again severe. The arena of contention today is mainly the public schools. Scientists, supported by the nation’s courts, demand that teachers present evolution—and only evolution—as the accepted scientific explanation for the origin of life’s diversity. Creationists, on the other hand, demand that educators exclude evolution from the curriculum—but if educators must teach it, they should also be required to teach a competing theory, called creation science, as a “logical” alternative......................

The Natural Pet Food Cookbook - Healthful Recipes for Dogs and Cats

Wiley Publishing, Inc. | ISBN-13: 978-0-470-22530-1 | Author: Wendy Nan Rees | English | PDF | 130 Pages | 2.23 MB

Introduction
In the late 1960s and early ’70s, organic and all-natural foods were becoming commonplace in human diets. As we became more aware of what we were putting into our own bodies, it seemed only natural that we began to consider what we were feeding our pets. Little did I know that my first job, at the young age of 17, would shape the course of my life. My duties included taking care of the Goldstein family’s two girls and working four days a week at their Katonah, New York, store Lick Your Chops, one of the very first all-natural pet stores. Robert Goldstein was and still is a prominent veterinarian, now based in Westport, Connecticut. After 30 years in the holistic pet industry, Goldstein and his wife, Susan, remain pioneers in the field. Their book The Goldsteins’Wellness and Longevity has won numerous awards. What I learned in that summer of ’78 was the reason I started cooking for my pets. In 1985, I welcomed home my first puppy, a Chinese Shar-Pei. Six weeks later, he became very ill. Weeks of tests showed
that he was allergic to soy, salt, and preservatives. At the time I was in cooking school and newly married, but I thought, how hard could it be to create some food or at least a treat for my dog? To my surprise, learning the ins and outs took about 8 months; just figuring out how to make the treats crunchy without burning them was a challenge. Lip Smackers®, the people cookie made for dogs, was born, and so was my career in the pet industry. After graduating from cooking school, I started the company Lip Smackers and began applying everything I had learned while I worked for the Goldsteins. For example, they taught me that brewer’s yeast is wonderful for dogs; it helps bitter the blood to retard fleas. Since writing my first cookbook in 1991, I have been on a mission to teach people how to cook and care for their pets in a healthy, all-natural way, always keeping it easy, fun, safe, and practical. In 2007, for the first time we had a major pet food recall. This recall turned the industry upside down. Having lost confidence in pet food manufacturers, more and more pet parents are looking for healthy recipes that they can cook for their dogs and cats—like the recipes I have been creating since 1985. This book contains all-new, all-natural recipes. I have had the good fortune to work closely on this book with Kevin Schlanger, DVM, who is my own pets’ veterinarian. In addition to providing tips for you, Dr. Kevin has reviewed all the recipes in this book to make sure that they are safe for your pets.

Top 100 Careers for College Graduates

JIST Publishing, Inc. | ISBN-13: 978-1-59357-318-8 | Author: Michael Farr | English | PDF (RAR Compressed)| 433 Pages | 6.50 MB

Introduction
This book is about improving your life, not just about selecting a job. The career you choose will have an enormous impact on how you live your life.
While a huge amount of information is available on occupations, most people don’t know where to find accurate, reliable facts to help them make good career decisions—or they don’t take the time to look. Important choices such as what to do with your career or whether to get additional training or education deserve your time. If you are considering more training or education—whether additional coursework, a college degree, or an advanced degree—this book will help with solid information. Training or education beyond high school is now typically required to get better jobs, and the education and training needed for the jobs in this book vary enormously. This book is designed to give you facts to help you explore your options. A certain type of work or workplace may interest you as much as a certain type of job. If your interests and values lead you to work in healthcare, for example, you can do this in a variety of work environments, in a variety of industries, and in a variety of jobs. For this reason, I
suggest you begin exploring alternatives by following your interests and finding a career path that allows you to use your talents doing something you enjoy. Also, remember that money is not everything. The time you spend in career planning can pay off in higher earnings, but being satisfied with your work—and your life—is often more important than how much you earn. This book can help you find the work that suits you best.

The Book of Revelation For Dummies

Wiley Publishing, Inc. | ISBN: 978-0-470-04521-3 | Author: Larry R. Helyer,PhD, and Richard Wagner | English | PDF | 362 Pages | 4.25 MB

Introduction
Acommon cartoon theme involves a person wearing a sandwich sign or carrying a poster that proclaims, “Repent! The end is near!” What’s implied is that some sudden, violent event is just around the corner and that people need to brace themselves for whatever’s coming. And usually, the end that’s near involves something nasty, if not totally devastating. The idea of a dramatic and destructive end to the earth has been around for ages. It’s the stuff of some really great sci-fi movies, and a lot of the elements that go into these stories come right out of the Bible. In fact, terms such as repent and Antichrist and Armageddon are direct references to messages, characters, and events that make up the book of Revelation. When you examine these themes and images in the context of religion, faith, and biblical history, things get even more interesting. But the book of Revelation is no easy read. Some people, after slogging through Revelation, seem to suffer from what we call PTRRD: Post-Traumatic Revelation Reading
Disorder. Maybe you’ve had this experience. You start reading with a rush of enthusiasm, and all goes well through the first three chapters and their letters to the seven churches. Then things start to get hairy: visions from heaven, creatures with eyes covering their bodies, plagues, horses of different colors, angels everywhere. Seven seals are opened, seven trumpets are sounded, seven bowls are poured out, and things get really confusing. Throw in grapes of wrath, red dragons, giant hail, and something called the rapture, and, well, you get the idea. Lost becomes more than just the name of a television series — it’s the perfect descriptor of your mental state. Our intent is to help you avoid PTRRD. We act as your tour guides to help you navigate the amazing book of Revelation. Even if you can’t figure out every single detail, clues that open up large chunks of the text abound. We promise you’ll come away with a better understanding of what Revelation is about, as well as a ton of cool information that you can sprinkle into conversations and impress your friends!

Robot Builder's Cookbook Build and Design Your Own

Elsevier Ltd. | ISBN: 978-0-7506-6556-8 | Author: Owen Bishop | English | PDF (RAR Compressed) | 373 Pages | 10.98 MB

About this book
This is a book of practical robotics written for beginners but also catering for those who have progressed a little further beyond that stage. It describes the mechanics of robot construction, how to build the electronic circuits, and finally goes into the details of programming robotic systems. The first half of the book is a cookbook of information, ideas, tips, and suggestions for the first-time roboticists and others. Much of the content will be of interest and practical use to students in Further and Higher Education who are working on a micro-controllerbased project (though not necessarily a robotic one). The second half of the book describes the designing, building and programming of five robots of varying degrees of complexity. The specifications are flexible and essential features are emphasised so that the designs are readily adaptable to whatever materials and parts the reader can obtain. Each description points the way to more advanced development of the project, resulting in a wide range of
fascinating and often unique robots. The programs are listed in the PICs MPASM assembler, which allows them to be modified, fine-tuned and extended. The listings are fully annotated and are accompanied by detailed flowcharts. These are intended to provide ample guidance for those who wish to program in one of the dialects of BASIC, or in the C language.

Applying Psychology to Everyday Life - A Beginners Guide

John Wiley & Sons | ISBN-13: 978-0-470-86988-8 | Author: Kenneth T. Strongman | English | PDF | 301 Pages | 2.73 MB

Preface
I began by wanting to write a book entitled something like Where Psychology Has Gone Wrong. The reason for this desire came from thinking that psychology is a far more interesting and stimulating subject than it would appear to be from a glance at some academic texts and journal articles. Also, many students begin their psychological studies with enthusiasm and then rapidly have to come to terms with the subject not being quite as they thought that it might be. Somehow, it all seems rather remote from everyday issues and problems, in fact, not to put too fi ne a point on it, rather remote from people and what they do. However, those close enough to me to receive my confi dences about the proposed book gently suggested that it seemed a hint negative. So, instead I thought of writing something not only about where psychology had lost its way, but also about more positive and interesting directions it had taken and where it might go more positively in the future. This still seemed somewhat negative. Finally,
then, came the idea of picking the eyes out of psychology, of amassing in one place all of those aspects of psychology which have been developed in an interesting and practically useful way. When it came to looking for them, then there they were. There was also the further consideration of identifying the potential readership. This was an easier problem. The book is intended generally for any person who wishes to fi nd out a little about psychology in a way that would be useful to them in their everyday world, be it at work or at home, when alone or in the company of others. The book is also intended specifi cally for any student who is required (or wishes) to study psychology for one year as part of some other training (teaching, medicine, paramedical services, police work, and so on). It will give them a reasonably thorough grounding in many (but not all) aspects of psychology, but will also ensure that this grounding occurs in the everyday world. In the end, this is not a didactic book. It has a much more practical set of aims – to be useful and stimulating and, above all, to communicate and engage. Psychology can be both surprising and fascinating. Returning to the point made at the start of this preface, I am now in a position of easily identifying those aspects of psychological research that (in my view) have been, let us say, less than riveting. They are simply all of those parts of psychology not included in Applying Psychology to Everyday Life, but the thought of writing a book about them is also less than riveting. This was the better way to do it.

The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted

Ben Bella Books, Inc. | ISBN 1-932100-66-0 | Author: T. Colin{ampbell, Ph.D. | English | PDF | 425 Pages | 5.80 MB

Introduction
THE PUBLIC'S HUNGER for nutrition information never ceases to amaze me, even after devoting my entire working life to conducting experimental research into nutrition and health. Diet books are perennial best-sellers. Almost every popular magazine features nutrition advice, newspapers regularly run articles and TV and radio programs constantly discuss diet and health.
Given the barrage of information, are you confident that you know what you should be doing to improve your health? Should you buy food that is labeled organic to avoid pesticide exposure? Are environmental chemicals a primary cause of cancer? Or is your health "predetermined" by the genes you inherited when you were born? Do carbohydrates really make you fat? Should you be more concerned about the total amount of fat you eat, or just saturated fats and trans-fats? What vitamins, if any, should you be taking? Do you buy foods that are fortified with extra fiber? Should you eat fish, and, if so, how often? Will eating soy foods prevent heart disease? My guess is that you're not really sure of the answers to these questions. If this is the case, then you aren't alone. Even though information and opinions are plentiful, very few people truly know what they should be doing to improve their health. This isn't because the research hasn't been done. It has. We know an enormous amount about the links between nutrition and health. But the real science has been buried beneath a clutter of irrelevant or even harmful information-junk science, fad diets and food industry propaganda.

A wealth of knowledge!

'Encyclopedia of Occultism and Parapsychology' by Spence Lewis is a compendium of information on the Occult Sciences, Magic, Demonology, Superstitions, Spiritism, Mysticism, Metaphysics, Psychical Science, and Parapsychology, with Biographical and Bibliographical Notes and Comprehensive Indexes. Edited by J. Gordon Melton.

Introduction:

This fifth edition of the Encyclopedia of Occultism & Parapsychology (EOP) continues the tradition established by its predecessors in providing the most comprehensive coverage of the fields of occultism and parapsychology.

The first edition, published in 1978, brought together the texts of two of the standard reference works in the field, Lewis Spence’s Encyclopedia of Occultism (1920) and Nandor Fodor’s Encyclopedia of Psychic Science (1934). Later, editor Leslie Shepard took on the task of updating their observations and supplementing the volume with new entries.

The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books by René Goscinny (stories) and Albert

Uderzo (illustrations). Uderzo has continued the series since the death of Goscinny in 1977. The series follows the exploits of a village

of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient

superhuman strength. This is often used for comic effect, as in a recurring sequence where the villagers sally forth from their village to

rout the attacking Romans so easily as to consider it great sport. In many cases, this resistance leads the main characters to travel to

various European countries (but also Egypt, America, India and other non-European locations) in every other book, while the remaining are

set in and around their village.

Trainer: Michael J. Shannon
Running Time: 8 Hours
Format: cue/bin
Details:
XML, the standardized format of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) aims to make application development and integration very simple. It is a data format and framework that has been adopted as the basis for information exchange by the software development community. It is so powerful that Microsoft developed their entire .NET platform around using XML.
It is simple to learn, flexible to use and easy to understand. It works with applications, the internet and databases and is platform independent meaning it can be used to share data between a variety of database and application types and formats.
Garth Schulte, the instructor for this series, details how XML came to life, why it is needed and how you can use it. This creates a very informative foundation of knowledge that will benefit programmers, administrators and engineers alike. If your job entails any type of interface with databases, connectivity of applications or transferring of information, you need to watch these videos.
Programmers will find the videos a great place to start if they are considering an MCAD or MCSD for .NET certification track. The series contains 14 videos that average 30 minutes in length. This provides for 7 hours of in-depth instruction that is designed to entertain as well as educate. You won't fall asleep watching these. Garth has a great personality that shines through in his presentation of the material. He is truly passionate about programming and what you can create with a computer.

Hi,

Perry Mason novel by Erle Stanley Gardner. Hope you enjoy them!

Part 1:
The Case of the Crying Swallow (short story) (1947) — Major Claude Winnett, war hero, lives with his wife and mother on a vast sea-side estate. Some jewelry is missing, and his wife has disappeared.

The Case of the Blonde Bonanza (1962) - Mason thinks it's crazy that someone is paying a beautiful girl $100 a week to put on weight, but she might be a missing heir -- or a murderer. "A diabolically clever variation on the confidence game of the "lost heir" is the foundation of this delightful caper, in which Perry Mason once again sees through the machinations of people generally quite as able as himself. ... Again, the court scene is thrilling and brilliant."

The Case of the Counterfeit Eye (1935) - "Peter Brunold has a bloodshot glass eye to use the "morning after". It is distinctive, closely identified with him, and thus quite a handicap when a corpse is found clutching a bloodshot glass eye. Later, another corpse is found, with another bloodshot glass eye in hand. Perry Mason is in almost as much jeopardy as his client: the lawyer's fingerprints have been found on one of the alleged murder weapons."

The Case of the Caretaker's Cat (1935) - After his employer dies in a fire, a caretaker hires Mason to allow him to keep his cat against the wishes of the men who inherit. When the caretaker is killed, Mason defends the woman accused of his murder.

The Case of the Dangerous Dowager (1937) - Mason is hired to retrieve a spoiled granddaughter's gambling IOUs by a wealthy cigar-smoking dowager. A murder aboard a gambling ship is beyond the three-mile limit.

The Case of the Curious Bride (1935) — A woman claiming not to be a bride consults Mason about her 'friend' whose husband, long thought to have died in a plane crash, turns up alive.

The Case of the Baited Hook (1940) - Mason is given a third of a $10,000 bill to represent a masked woman in the future. It takes him almost until the murder trial to find out which cheating woman is his client.

Part 2:
The Case of the Daring Divorcee (1964) A purse containing thousands of dollars and a twice-fired gun is left in Mason's office, but his potential client has disappeared.

The Case of the Howling Dog (1934) - "When a potential client wants to see Perry Mason about a howling dog and a will, the attorney is not interested. He does not enjoy drawing wills, and wonders if the man shouldn't see a veterinarian. However, when the man asks whether a will is legal if the person who made it had been executed for murder, immediately Mason becomes interested. He finds, in addition to the will and the dog, a man who had run away with the wife of another, and a sexy housekeeper."

The Case of the Horrified Heirs (1964) - Mason defends a woman twice; once on drug smuggling charges, and once on murder charges.

The Case of the Lazy Lover (1947) - A man tells everyone that his wife has run away with his best friend, who seems to have a strange lack of enthusiasm about the affair. The case leads to murder and a trial that hinges on multiple sets of footprints.

The Case of the Foot-Loose Doll (1958) - Mason defends a woman against charges of two murders - she has already stolen $4,000, stabbed a man with an ice pick and fled a fatal accident but he is convinced she is innocent of murder.

The Case of the Fenced-In Woman (published posthumously) (1972) - Mason becomes involved in the bizarre case of a house split right through the living room with a barbed-wire fence -- and a body in the pool.

The Case of the Lucky Legs (1934) - A mistake at a murder scene dogs Perry while he tries to represent a woman taken in by a con man.

Code: http://rapidshare.com/files/72211199/ESG_-_Perry_Mason_-_02.zip

Part 3:
The Case of the Troubled Trustee (1965) - Why would a talented investment advisor embezzle a quarter of a million dollars from his client 'for her own good?' Mason first advises him, then defends him as the case becomes murder.

The Case of the Sleepwalker's Niece (1936) - When two men change bedrooms at a house-party, everyone thinks that the sleepwalker with the carving knife killed the wrong man.

The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (1936) — Mason gets a telephone call from a man who identifies himself as Anglican Bishop William Mallory, recently returned from many years in Australia, and tells Mason that he will testify on the behalf of Mason's client, if Mason can find him. But Mason observes that a bishop who's delivered many sermons is unlikely to stutter.

The Case of the Velvet Claws (1933) - A spoiled woman is keen to keep news of her affairs from her powerful husband, even if it costs Perry his freedom when she swears he was on the murder scene.

The Case of the Sulky Girl (1933) - A bratty heiress wants to keep the news of her marriage a secret from the guardian who controls her purse strings, but when he's murdered, her groom is accused.

The Case of the Singing Skirt (1959) - Mason's client is framed for theft and fired because she wouldn't help cheat a casino patron. Then she's accused of murder, and the gun juggling begins. "The court scene is excellent; the characters, though thin as usual, are amply credible; and the pace never flags."

SR-71 Blackbird in Action (No.55)
PDF-File

The Lockheed SR-71 is an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design"s innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action.

From Poe's Dupin and Doyle's Holmes to the television hits Quincy and CSI, the public's fascination with science employed to solve crimes continues and grows. t this understanding of how science works in the forensic laboratory is filtered through the fictional worlds of books and television. How is science really used to fight crime? What techniques are used to catch criminals and free the innocent? Forensic scientists work with police, investigators, medical personnel, attorneys, and others to uphold justice, but their methods are often misunderstood, overestimated, underestimated, revered, or disputed. Here, the author answers many common questions about forensic science: How is the science conducted and by whom? What are the real limits, and real benefits, of forensic science? What new techniques are emerging to catch 21st-century criminals? Readers are treated to an insider's overview of the realties of forensic science.
Forensic Science: Modern Methods of Solving Crime covers the basic concepts of forensic science and how it assists in criminal investigations. Starting with a brief history of forensic science, from its early days in Europe to the modern advances of today, the book describes each method and presents cases that highlight the applications of the methods. Houck profiles pioneers in forensic science, offers an overview of such forensic topics as DNA, fibers, fingerprints, and firearms, takes readers through the collection and processing of evidence, and uses frequent examples and anecdotes to illustrate all the major areas of forensic science. This introduction to the field is a useful starting point for anyone wishing to learn more about the real world of forensic science.

Hackers Beware

A good defense starts with a thorough understanding of your opponent’s offense. Hackers Beware teaches you how hackers think, what tools they use, and the techniques they utilize to compromise a machine. Eric Cole, a leading expert in information security, shows you not only how to detect these attacks, but what you can do to protect yourself against them. When it comes to securing your site, knowledge is power. This book gives you the knowledge to build a proper defense against attackers.

With so much going on in regard to network security (or the lack thereof), a book on this topic almost needs no introduction. Less than 10 years ago, most people didn’t even know what the Internet or email was. To take a further step back, most people did not even have computers at work or home, and some even questioned their usefulness. Things have really changed. As I am writing this, the Carousel of Progress ride at Disney World goes through my mind. Things that we considered science fiction a decade ago are not only a reality, but an engrained part of our life. Heck, if the dedicated line at my house goes down for more than 30 minutes, my wife is screaming at me to fix it. This is truly the age of computers.

Human Givens - A new approach to emotional health and clear thinking

HG Publishing | ISBN 1 899398 31 7 | Author: Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell | English | PDF | 440 Pages | 5.63 MB

Foreword
IT IS A general rule in medicine that, when there are a number of different theories purporting to explain a condition, one can be certain that all of them are wrong, though each may have certain facts right. There are over 400 different models of psychotherapy in the West today, with the proponents of each model competing with the others and laying claim to primacy. How is it possible to have so many different models when there is general agreement about how the brain works? Can you imagine having 400 different schools of physics or mathematics? By dint of clear thinking, Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell lead us out of this muddle. They have assembled verifiable scientific information on how the brain works, including important original work of their own, and created a new organising idea - the human givens approach - that has the potential to transform the practice of psychiatry, psychotherapy and counselling. Although my interest is in psychiatry and psychotherapy, it is obvious to me that this big idea also has great relevance to other important areas of life, such as education, social work and personal relationships. Some of the information in this book will be new and startling to many, some, at first glance, will appear familiar. But Griffin and Tyrrell's assembly of it is unique in that the bits and pieces that stick out in other therapy models now fit together, and this fit is both aesthetically pleasing and of immense practical use.
For example, they succeed in making reading about depression exciting! This common, rapidly rising condition is costing Western society enormous pain; emotional and financial. It is also a major cause of premature death through suicide. Depressed mood, loss of interest and enjoyment, fatigue, poor concentration, guilt, suicidal thoughts, and disturbed sleep and appetite, are generally agreed criteria used to diagnose depression. Often a person with depression will complain of early morning wakening, with depressed mood and tiredness worst at that time. To overcome the fatigue he or she may try to sleep longer than usual but the tiredness persists. We also know that depressed people spend a greater proportion of sleep time in the REM (rapid eye movement) state, that artificially shortening the REM..............................

International Thriller Writers, Inc. | ISBN: 978-3-527-30817-0 | Edited by: James Patterson | English | PDF | 572 Pages | 6.76 MB

Introduction
This book is a trailblazer on two counts. It’s the first short-story anthology of thrillers ever done, and it’s the first publication of a new professional organization: International Thriller Writers, Inc. By nature writers tend to be loners, happy with their work, their families and a few close friends. But we also yearn occasionally for collegiality. For years we’ve all said to one another, “Why don’t we organize?” Then in June 2004, Barbara Peters, of the legendary Poisoned Pen bookstore in Scottsdale, Arizona, held the first-ever thriller conference in the United States. She invited six writers— Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Steve Hamilton, Gayle Lynds, David Morrell and Kathy Reichs—and one editor, Keith Kahla, of St. Martin’s Press, to give presentations about the various aspects of writing and publishing thrillers. Clive Cussler spoke at the luncheon. With only two weeks to publicize the event, Barbara thought she’d be lucky if a hundred people registered. In the end some 125 attended and, to everyone’s
surprise, not all were there to learn about writing. Many were readers who wanted to meet some of their favorite thriller authors. Here for the first time was concrete evidence of what most of us had long suspected: there was a demand among fans for a thriller writers’ organization, too. If we held conventions, readers would likely attend, as well as us. And if we awarded prizes—there have never been awards specifically for thriller books, stories and films in the English language—that interest would only grow. On the last day of the conference, in the sunny restaurant at the Biltmore Hotel in Scottsdale, several of the attendees stood around talking. Gayle Lynds, a highly accomplished thriller writer, mentioned that she thought the conference indicated the time had come to create an association for thriller writers. Adrian Muller, a journalist and freelance conference organizer, pointed out that the association should not be limited to the United States. Barbara Peters said she’d be willing to hold another, larger convention. Realizing that she’d almost committed herself, Gayle quickly announced, “I can’t organize this alone, though.” Her husband, the incomparable Dennis Lynds, added, “She’s right. She can’t.” Barbara merely smiled and said, “Pull in David Morrell. He’s perfect.” And that’s what happened. Adrian Muller volunteered to send out e-mails to every thriller author he could find to see if there was enough interest among writers to form a group. A few days later, Gayle and David had a long telephone call, discussing their workloads and a potential thriller organization that would be international in scope. They agreed to jointly head the effort, and over the summer of 2004 Adrian, David and Gayle talked and exchanged e-mails. Adrian arranged with Al Navis, who was orchestrating Bouchercon 2004, the great congregation of mystery readers and writers, to assign a room in which the thriller authors could meet. The response to Adrian’s e-mail was impressive. Author after author said that an association was a great idea. A meeting was held on October 9 in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and, after many discussions, International Thriller Writers, Inc. was born. In November 2004, members were solicited. That response was likewise incredible. Currently there are over four hundred members, with combined sales exceeding 1,600,000,000 books. This is all quite astonishing, and fitting because thrillers provide such a rich literary feast. There are all kinds. The legal thriller, spy thriller, action-adventure thriller, medical thriller, police thriller, romantic thriller, historical thriller, political thriller, religious thriller, high-tech thriller, military thriller. The list goes go on and on, with new variations constantly being invented. In fact, this openness to expansion is one of the genre’s most enduring characteristics. But what gives the variety of thrillers a common ground is the intensity of emotions they create, particularly those of apprehension and exhilaration, of excitement and breathlessness, all designed to generate that all-important thrill. By definition, if a thriller doesn’t thrill, it’s not doing its job. Thrillers, though, are also known for their pace, and the force with which they hurtle the reader along. They’re an obstacle race in which an objective is achieved at some heroic cost. The goal can be personal (trying to save a spouse or a long-lost relative) or global (trying to avert a world war) but often it’s both. Perhaps there’s a time limit imposed, perhaps not. Sometimes they build rhythmically to rousing climaxes that peak with a cathartic, explosive ending. Other times they start at top speed and never ease off. At their best, thrillers use scrupulous research and accurate details to create environments in which meaningful characters teach us about our world. When readers finish a thriller, they should feel not only emotionally satisfied but also better informed—and hungry for the next riveting tale. Henry James once wrote, “The house of fiction has many windows.” That observation
certainly applies to thrillers, and this anthology is an excellent example. When Gayle Lynds suggested producing it, International Thriller Writers, Inc. sent out a call to its members for stories. Many replied, and thirty were ultimately selected for inclusion. I was contacted about acting as editor and readily agreed, while Steve Berry, another ITW member and thriller author, took on the responsibility of managing director. When the book proposal was finally shopped by agent Richard Pine, himself an ITW member, several publishers expressed interest and, after a bidding war, MIRA Books acquired the rights. Generously, each of the contributors to this book donated his or her story. Only ITW will share in the royalties, the proceeds earned going into the corporate treasury to fund the expansion of this worthwhile organization. The theme of this anthology is simple. Each writer has used a familiar character or plotline from their body of work and crafted an original story. So you have something known, along
with something new. As you’ll see, the variations are captivating, as the writers’ imaginations soared. Each story is prefaced by an introduction from me that sets up the writer, his or her work and the story. At the book’s end, there are short biographies of each contributor. What a pleasure it was to read the stories as they came in, and it’s my hope that you’ll likewise relish the tales. So prepare to be thrilled. And enjoy the experience.

—James Patterson

Often a person with depression will complain of early morning wakening, with depressed mood and tiredness worst at that time. To overcome the fatigue he or she may try to sleep longer than usual but the tiredness persists. We also know that depressed people spend a greater proportion of sleep time in the REM (rapid eye movement) state, that artificially shortening the REM..............................

Hydrogen as a Future Energy Carrier

WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. | ISBN: 978-3-527-30817-0 | Edited by: A. Z¨uttel, A. Borgschulte, and L. Schlapbach | English | PDF | 436 Pages | 7.50 MB

Introduction
Human beings developed on Earth on the basis of plants, that is biomass, as the only energy carrier. The average power consumed by a human body at rest is 0.1kW and approximately 0.4kWfor a hard working body, delivering about 0.1kWof work. The consumption of plants by humans and animals did not change the atmosphere because the carbon dioxide liberated by humans and animals was reabsorbed by the plants in the photosynthesis process. The only mechanical work available from nonliving systems were the windmills and the waterwheels, where solar energy was converted into mechanical power. With the discovery of the steam engine in 1712 by Thomas Newcomen [1] humanity had for the first time a nonliving machine available, consuming carbon or hydrocarbons and delivering mechanical power on demand. This initialized the industrialization process and thereby changed society completely, in particular the demand for more and more energy. The energy for the steam engine was found in the form of mineral coal, solar energy
stored in the Earth’s crust over millions of years. Coal as a solid energy carrier was later complemented by liquid crude oil and natural gas. Not only did the state of the energy carrier change with time, from solid to liquid and finally gas, but also the amount of hydrogen in the fuel increased from zero to four hydrogen atoms per carbon atom. The world energy consumption increased from 5×1012 kWh/year in 1860 to 1.2×1014 kWh/year today. More than 80% is based on fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas [2]. The population of human beings has increased in the last century by a factor of 4 and the energy demand by a factor of 24. The world wide average continuous power demand is 2 kW/capita. In the USA the power consumption is on average 10 kW/capita and in Europe about 5 kW/capita [3], while two billion people on Earth do not yet consume any fossil fuels at all. However, the reserves of, for example crude oil on Earth are limited and predictions based on extrapolation of the energy consumption show that the demand will soon exceed the supply [4]. The reserves.............................

Thriller -Stories to Keep You Up All Night

Techniques and Case Studies

Information Science Reference | ISBN 978-1-59904-906-9 | Author: Hanna Oktaba & Mario Piattini | English | PDF | 395 Pages | 9.00 MB (.RAR - 4.73 MB)

Preface
From the very beginning of the 1990s onward, the software engineering community (industry and researchers) has expressed special interest in software process improvement (SPI). This is evidenced by the growing number of books, articles, and conferences that deal with the topic of SPI and the great number of international initiatives related to SPI such as CMM®, CMMI®, ISO/IEC 12207, 15504, and ISO 90003, among others. Nevertheless, these standards and models are conceived for big organizations like USA DoD, NASA, multinational software factories, and so forth. In fact, there is a widespread tendency to emphasize that the success of SPI is only possible for large companies that have enough resources to tackle these types of practices. This perception is based on the fact that SPI programs are just not viable for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) because of their organizational structure and the high costs that are involved. However, the software industry in most countries is made up mainly of SMEs which favorate the growth of national economies. Most software development organizations (nearly 90%) are SMEs which contribute to very valuable and widespread products. Almost all the experts agree that the special characteristics of SMEs mean that process improvement programs must be applied in a way that is particular to them and visibly different from how this is done in the large organizations. This is not as simple as just regarding these programs as scaled down versions of those applied in big companies. In fact, the assessments conformant to the international standards are expensive and time consuming, difficult to perform in small companies, their process model structure is too complex, and the return of investment undertaken has to be seen from a long-term perspective. The first International Research Workshop for Process Improvement in Small Settings organized by the Software Engineering Institute (October 2005), the new ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7 Working Group 24, which was created (2006) to develop the “Software
Life Cycle Profiles and Guidelines for use in Very Small Enterprises (VSE),” and several other initiatives have demonstrated the increasing interest for new proposals and experiences in software improvement for SMEs. SMEs have become concerned about how to improve the capability of their software processes, as a fundamental element to increase product quality, addressing two main concerns: the first one has to do with their image, which is a key factor in order to be able to export software and hence enter the global marketplace; and the other concern is related to the efficiency and effectiveness of software process management. Also, different countries like Mexico, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, and so on have developed local programs to promote the improvement of their software industry, especially focused on SMEs. As a result, several maturity and improvement models have been developed and successful experiences have been carried out. Therefore, in this context, we present this book, the main
objective of which is to provide practical and useful guidelines, models, and techniques for improving software processes in SMEs and collecting real case studies and lessons learned, as successful examples of experiences in improving software process capability.

Wrox Professional IIS-7 Mar2008

Wiley Publishing, Inc. | ISBN 978-0-470-09782-3 | Author: Ken Schaefer,Jeff Cochran, Scott Forsyth,Rob Baugh, Mike Everest & Dennis Glendenning | English | PDF | 843 Pages | 16.40 MB (RAR - 10.00 MB)

Introduction
Windows Server 2008 is the first update to Microsoft’s server operating system in nearly five years, and among the major changes is the new Internet Information Services 7.0, which probably marks the biggest departure from previous IIS versions that we have ever seen. Previous recent releases of IIS have concentrated on improving security and reliability and thus have mostly involved changes “under the hood.” For administrators and developers, adaptation to the new products had been relatively simple. With IIS 7.0, however, Microsoft has fundamentally changed the way the product works, with new configuration, delegated administration, and extensibility options designed to address perceived feature weakness compared to competing products. At the same time, IIS 7.0 now has new, real-time diagnostic and troubleshooting features and absorbs functionality from ASP.NET (such as caching and forms-based authentication), making this available across all requests. With the addition of a brand-new FTP server and FastCGI support, IIS 7.0 leapfrogs its major competitors in feature and flexibility options and indicates a clear effort by Microsoft to capture more of the public- facing web server market, in addition to its existing strong presence in the corporate sphere. For administrators and developers, the fundamental changes in the way that IIS 7.0 works, is administered, and can be extended mean that the knowledge required to fully take advantage of IIS 7.0’s new features is substantially greater than in previous versions. The authors have focused on capturing the very best of the new features in IIS 7.0 and how you can take advantage of them. The writing styles vary from chapter to chapter because some of the foremost experts on IIS 7.0 have contributed to this book. Drawing on our expertise in deployment, hosting, development, and enterprise operations, we believe that this book captures much of what today’s IIS administrators need in their day-to-day work.

Who This Book Is For
This book is aimed at IIS administrators (or those who need to ramp up quickly in anticipation of having to administer IIS). What differentiates this book is that it doesn’t just focus on features and how to configure them using a GUI administrative tool. Instead, we explain how features work (for example, how Kerberos authentication actually works under the covers) so that you can better troubleshoot issues when something goes wrong. Additionally, since most administrators need to be able to automate common procedures, we have included specific chapters on programmatic administration and command-line tools as well as code snippets (using AppCmd.exe, WMI, and .NET) throughout the book. This book covers features that many other IIS books don’t touch (such as high availability and web farm scenarios, or extending IIS) and has a dedicated chapter on troubleshooting and diagnostics.

The Student's Guide to Exam Success

McGraw-Hill Education | ISBN-13: 978 0 335 22048 9 | Author: Eileen Tracy | English | PDF | 225 Pages | 1.29 MB

Introduction: Action,not anxiety
When I started writing this book, I went to a library and, as part of my research, collected ten books on how to pass exams. As he checked the books out, the librarian glanced sternly up. I could predict what was coming, because it was May, and I look young enough to pass off as a 20-year-old. ‘Now, dear girl,’ he commanded me over his half-moons, ‘make sure you don’t waste all your time reading these books, and get down to some serious revision.’ I relate this episode because it impressed upon me how quickly people can jump to the wrong conclusions unless they seek out the underlying context first. Without this, they are likely to do more harm than good. It also reminded me how many of us enjoy exerting power over others weaker than ourselves. Students are often singled out for such attention, since, as anyone who has ever put L-plates on their car will confirm, the learner status often arouses superior attitudes in others. People, institutions, dare I say even governments have been known to take liberties
with students that they wouldn’t dream of taking with other intelligent adults. Had this chap been genuinely concerned about what he believed to be my exam neurosis, something less condescending might have passed his lips – for instance, ‘What is it about exams that makes us all so anxious?’ Even, ‘What the hell do you want all those exam books for – you look perfectly clever to me’ might have opened the channels of communication. And indeed, had I been in the alarming state he imagined, a few sympathetic words on his part might have been a life-saver. Instead, he saw my ten books, saw me, thought, ‘Student with no confidence in herself at ...................................

Where Does it Hurt?

Author: Terry O'Brien | English | PDF | 29 Pages | 1.90 MB

Introduction
They say that laughter is the best medicine, research shows that a spell of laughter can help relieve pain. It increases Blood flow, boosts the metabolism and stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller. However Back Pain is not a laughing matter and by understanding more about your Back Pain, you can work together with your practitioner to find ways you can best treat it or at the very least get it under control. The vast majority of skeletal muscular pain is felt in the joints or the point where a muscle attaches to the bone. With the back for example, it is the lower joints that seem to be much more susceptible to pain than the ones higher up, although the upper back is by no means excluded.............................

Value and Virtue in a Godless Universe

Cambridge University Press | ISBN-13 978-0-521-84565-6 | Author: ERIK J. WIELENBERG | English | PDF | 204 Pages | 1.70 MB

VALUE AND VIRTUE IN A GODLESS UNIVERSE
Suppose there is no God.Would the implication be that human life is meaningless, that the notions of right and wrong, virtue and vice, good and evil have no place, and that there are no moral obligations – hence people can do whatever they want? Erik J. Wielenberg believes this view to be utterly mistaken and in this book he explains why. He argues that even if God does not exist, human life can have meaning, we do have moral obligations, and virtue is possible. Naturally, the author sees virtue in a Godless universe as significantly different from virtue in a Christian universe, and he develops naturalistic accounts of humility, charity, and hope. The moral landscape in a Godless universe is different from the moral landscape in a Christian universe, but it does indeed exist. Value and Virtue in a Godless Universe is a tour of some of the central landmarks of this underexplored territory.

Erik J. Wielenberg is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at DePauw University. He has written articles in such journals as Religious Studies, Faith and Philosophy, Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, Synthese, and Oxford Studies in AncientPhilosophy.

INTRODUCTION
Director M. Night Shyamalan’s (2002) film Signs is remarkable in that it is simultaneously a story about an attempted invasion of the earth by extraterrestrials and an examination of religious faith. The main character is Graham Hess, a modern-day Job who has lost his faith as a result of his wife’s tragic death. At one point in the film, Graham and his brother Merrill are watching news reports about the activity of alien ships. Graham makes the following speech: People break down into two groups when they experience something lucky. Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I’m sure the people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation is fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they’re on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there’s a whole lot of people in group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they’re looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever’s going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See, what you have to ask yourself is, what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky?1 Graham’s remarks do an excellent job of characterizing the two sides of an ancient debate. In the contemporary Western philosophical scene, the two parties to this debate are typically theists on the one hand and atheists or naturalists on the other.

Being Logical A Guide To Good Thinking

Random House, Inc. | ISBN 1-4000-6171-7 | Author: D.Q. McInerny | English | PDF | 159 Pages | 2.38 MB

Preface
LOGIC IS ABOUT clear and effective thinking. It is a science and an art. This book is intended to introduce readers to the rudiments of the science as well as to the basic skills associated with the art. We all know people who are very bright but who do not always shine when it comes to being logical. They have the ability to think logically—that is, clearly and effectively— but that ability does not habitually manifest itself. The likelihood is that it has never been properly developed, pointing to a deficiency in their education. Indeed, logic is the very backbone of a true education, and yet it is seldom taught as such in American schools. To my mind, logic is the missing piece of the American educational system, the subject that informs every other subject from English to history to science and math. Some readers, especially if this book represents their first serious encounter with logic, might react skittishly to what appears to be an overly technical vocabulary, or to the symbolic notation that logic
makes frequent use of. Don't be scared off by initial impressions. I have made a concerted effort to present whatever technical matters I deal with here (which in any event are not all that trying) in as simple and uncomplicated a way as possible. At the same time, however, I have tried to avoid lapsing into the simplistic. A dumbed-down logic is not logic at all. Other readers might be put off by what they perceive to be an emphasis upon the obvious. I do, in fact, place a good deal of stress on the obvious in this book, and that is quite deliberate. In logic, as in life, it is the obvious that most often bears emphasizing, because it so easily escapes our notice. If I have belabored certain points, and regularly opted for the explicit over the implicit, it is because I adhere to the time-honored pedagogic principle that it is always safest to assume as little as possible. Logic, taken as a whole, is a wide, deep, and wonderfully varied field, and I would be pleased if my readers, as a result of their encounter with this little book, were moved to become more familiar with it. However, my aim here is very modest. This is neither a treatise in logical theory nor a textbook in logic—though I would not be disappointed to learn that it proves useful in the classroom. My governing purpose was to write a practical guidebook, presenting the basic principles of logic in a way that is accessible to those who are encountering the subject for the first time. Being Logical seeks to produce practitioners, not theoreticians—people for whom knowing the principles of logic is in the service of being logical.
