Martial Arts : Wu Style of Tai Chi Chuan
Wu-style Tai Chi Chuan was created by Quan You (1834-1902) who lived at Daxing in Hebei Pro-vince (now under Beijing Municipality). Quan You was of the Manchu nationality of China. He learned Tai Chi Quan from Yang Luchan and later followed Yang's second son Yang Banhou to study the short program. Quan You was known for his ability to soften his movements. Quan's son Jianquan changed his family name to Wu as he was brought up as a Han national. Wu Jianquan (1870-1942) inherited and disseminated a style of Tai Chi which is comfortable and upright. His style is continuous and ingenious and because his routine does not require jumps and leaps, it spread far and wide among common people. Since this style of Tai Chi Quan was disseminated by the Wu family, it became known as the Wu-style Tai Chi Chuan. The Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan was known by the name "Zhong Jia" ("medium frame").

If you're into songwriting, composing or arranging orignal music, this book is a cavernous "idea barrel" that will serve you well when you need some extra inspiration or as a reference to write out that "idea" accurately in the correct harmonic fashion. If you're a performer striving to shape your own musical expression, this book will be a wonderful tool in your hand. According to legend, John Coltrane used Nichols Slonimsky's THESARUS OF SCALES AND MELODIC PATTERNS to practice from during the period that "Kind of Blue" was recorded.(see page 71 of "KIND OF BLUE-The Making Of the Miles Davis Masterpiece" by Ashley Kahn) One note of caution, it offers no suggestion for technical proficiency or fingering in how to play these scales and patterns, you will have to figure that out by yourself. But that will allow you the maximum joy of self-discovery as you portage your way through these pages to your ultimate musicial destination.

This book is 900+ pages of outstanding material on what is really an art - assembly language programming. The author, a university professor, has done what so many other authors have failed to do: take a complicated subject and break it down into easy-to-digest pieces. More importantly, it's written in clear, understandable language. Although not for the faint hearted - you really have to want to learn assembly language programming - the serious student should have no problems. What's really neat (IMHO) is that the author's proven system - called High Level Assembler (HLA) - is used throughout the book. HLA, although slightly different from 'regular' assembler, is easy to learn and very, very logical. Again, if you want to learn assembly language, this is "the" book you should have in your library!!!
