This reference and handbook describes theory, algorithms and applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS/Galileo). It is primarily based on source-code descriptions of the KSGsoft program developed by the author at the GFZ in Potsdam. The theory and algorithms are extended and verified for a new development of a multiple functional GPS/Galileo software. Besides the concepts such as the unified GPS data processing method and the numerical solution of the variation equations, as well as the general ambiguity search criteria reported in the first edition, there are several highlights reported. Such as the equivalent principle and its applications, the theory of independent parameterisation, the diagonalisation algorithm, etc. Mathematically rigorous, the book begins with the basics of coordinate and time systems and satellite orbits, as well as GPS observables, and deals with topics such as physical influences, observation equations and their parameterisation, adjustment and filtering, ambiguity resolution, data processing, and the determination of perturbed orbits.

According to the received view of linguistic communication, the primary function of language is to enable speakers to reveal the propositional contents of their thoughts to hearers. Speakers are able to do this because they share with their hearers an understanding of the meanings of words. Christopher Gauker rejects this conception of language, arguing that it rests on an untenable conception of mental representation and yields a wrong account of the norms of discourse. Gauker's alternative starts with the observation that conversations have goals and that the best way to achieve the goal of a conversation depends on the circumstances under which the conversation takes place. These goals and circumstances determine a context of utterance quite apart from the attitudes of the interlocutors. The fundamental norms of discourse are formulated in terms of the conditions under which sentences are assertible in such contexts. Words without Meaning contains original solutions to a wide array of outstanding problems in the philosophy of language, including the logic of quantification, the logic of conditionals, the semantic paradoxes, the nature of presupposition and implicature, and the nature and attribution of beliefs.

Grade 8 Up-Shields places Putin's life and career in a clear historical context. For example, he introduces his subject as a young KGB agent stationed in East Germany at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, then goes on to explain the Cold War from its origins to its end. The chapters on Putin's boyhood, education, and early experience in Dresden may be the most personal, but even here readers are given a sketch of the history of the Soviet Union and the city of Leningrad. Subsequent chapters examine Putin's return to Leningrad, entry into politics, and move to Moscow. The final three chapters focus on his election to the presidency of Russia, the Kursk accident, and his dealings with the West through the end of 2001. There are plenty of well-chosen, full-color photos, and the chapters are subdivided into short sections. A few careless errors mar the otherwise well-written text. Twice KGB appears as KBG, and there are some sentences such as "He was born during at the height of the Cold War-" that escaped editing. Occasionally, there are misleading statements such as the assertion that the names of Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia were erased from maps after World War II. Nevertheless, the book is timely and provides a good summary of the life of this important head of state.
