The Biomedical Engineering Handbook enters its third edition as a set of three carefully focused and conveniently organized books. Reviewing applications at the leading edge of modern biomedical engineering, Tissue Engineering and Artificial Organs explores transport phenomena, biomimetics systems, biotechnology, prostheses, artificial organs, and ethical issues. The book features approximately 90% new material in the tissue engineering section, integrates coverage of life sciences with a new section on molecular biology, and includes a new section on bionanotechnology. Prominent leaders from around the world share their expertise in their respective fields with many new and updated chapters.

Already referred to as the "bible" of biomedical engineering, the third edition of The Biomedical Engineering Handbook is even more vast in its scope and depth than the previous two editions. Ranging from the theoretical to state-of-the-art applications, this edition includes so much new and updated material that it has expanded from two volumes into a three-volume set. The author again employs an interdisciplinary approach to the field. The second volume, Medical Devices and Systems has been updated to reflect the most recent advances in both research and practice in all pertinent fields. It authoritatively covers sensor and imaging technologies, signal analysis, medical instrumentation, and much more.

By F. Vanhoenacker (Editor), A.M. De Schepper (Editor), P.M. Parizel (Editor), J. Gielen (Editor)

Publisher: Springer
Publication Date: 2005-12-05
ISBN / ASIN: 3540248099

Book Description:
This richly illustrated book provides a comprehensive survey of the growing role of medical imaging studies in the detection, staging, grading, tissue characterization, and post-treatment follow-up of soft tissue tumors. For each tumor group, imaging findings are correlated with clinical, epidemiologic, and histologic data. The relative merits and indications of various imaging modalities are discussed and compared. Particular emphasis is placed on MRI because of its unique contrast resolution and multiplanar imaging capabilities. This third, revised and updated edition includes new chapters on genetics and molecular biology and on pathology of soft tissue tumors, with respect to the new World Health Organization (WHO) classification of soft tissue tumors. It aims to serve both as a systematic, descriptive textbook and as a rich pictorial database of soft tissue masses. The addition of numerous new illustrations of common and rare soft tissue tumors will further increase the scientific and educational value of this third edition.

Book Description:
In recent years, the imaging-based diagnosis of mass liver lesions has become increasingly complex due to the number and morphological variability of lesions that modern imaging techniques are currently able to display. If the sensitivity in detection has greatly increased, characterisation has remained difficult and represents a critical challenge for the clinician.The availability of blood-pool contrast agents for ultrasound (US), in particular second-generation US contrast agents based on perfluorocarbon- or sulfur-hexafluoride-filled microbubbles, and the development of contrast-specific software and technologies have opened up new perspectives both for the immediate characterisation of any mass lesion detected in the liver and for increasing the sensitivity of US in the detection of liver metastases.Taking into account the great impact of this new technology on clinical practice, the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) organised, in January 2004, in Rotterdam, a consensus meeting of experts in order to develop guidelines for the use of US contrast agents in the diagnosis of liver diseases . These guidelines, as well as discussions of further advances in the clinical application of contrast-enhanced harmonic US are presented in this book by an internationally renowned group of experts. The book represents provides an important starting point for clinical implementation of this new diagnostic procedure.

It's not a book, it's a CD-ROM but it delivers what it promises: a Herbal Pharmacy.

It's the best herbal Materia Medica program I know of, with close to 300 plants and about 100 formulas. The information is accurate, too - Brigitte has been a practising herbalist for quite a few years.

Welcome to The Herbal Pharmacy CD Rom. We hope that this CD will help you benefit from the wonderful healing properties of plants as well as guide you to using them safely and effectively. Herbal medicine is one of the most time-tested human traditions on the face of the Earth. The information you are about to read has been well researched, and although the modern scientific method has given us great insights into herbs, more research is needed and will certainly continue. Nonetheless, herbal medicine has benefited millions of people for thousands of years. I myself have been a practitioner for over 27 years, and my undiminished enthusiasm for herbal healing stems from my experiences of seeing herbs help many lives. A bibliography is also provided which will, I hope, guide you to some of the excellent and detailed literature available in the field of herbal medicine.

Health is a gift that makes life worthwhile. Herbs can certainly help us along that path, but they should not be relied upon simply as a band-aid to fix a health problem. I encourage you to look deeply at the causes of illness and seek to live a healthier lifestyle whenever possible. This includes having healthy relationships, eating a wholesome diet, and exercising. We must also avoid the things that damage health, such as stress, smoking, exposure to pollutants, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Provided in this program is information on how to use herbs, as well as herbal blends. Each herbal description includes contraindictions, such as dangerous side effects, to which you should pay careful attention. Many of the contraindications only occur in extremely large doses and would never be a problem with normal use. However, there are some plants that should best be used with professional counsel, and many should be avoided during pregnancy. In listing contraindications, I have chosen to err on the side of safety, rather than ignore any potential dangers. Remember just because something is from a plant does not mean it is appropriate for everyone to use at all times.

In Chinese medicine, different foods have different characteristics, described as energetics. This program is not intended to teach Chinese herbalism, but it does provide the energetics for each herb. I must admit that not everyone agrees on whether an herb is cool, cold or warm. As American herbalism evolves the use of energetics will become a more genuine and accurate part of our own healing tradition, with more agreement between herbal practitioners.

Even though some of the constituents of the plants are listed, herbalists usually prefer to use plants in a more whole form. I firmly believe that using the entire herb, with all of its components, is more effective and often safer than using any one component. Many herbs are becoming endangered. Please support local organic farming by buying herbs from reputable sources, and please avoid harvesting any endangered species. With the burgeoning interest in herbs, we must be careful not to threaten any more species, and you should consider the joy that comes from growing some of these plants yourself.

Does Consciousness Cause Behavior?
By

* Publisher: The MIT Press

* ISBN / ASIN: 0262162377

Our intuition tells us that we, our conscious selves, cause our own voluntary acts. Yet scientists have long questioned this; Thomas Huxley, for example, in 1874 compared mental events to a steam whistle that contributes nothing to the work of a locomotive. New experimental evidence (most notable, work by Benjamin Libet and Daniel Wegner) has brought the causal status of human behavior back to the forefront of intellectual discussion. This multidisciplinary collection advances the debate, approaching the question from a variety of perspectives.

The contributors begin by examining recent research in neuroscience that suggests that consciousness does not cause behavior, offering the outline of an empirically based model that shows how the brain causes behavior and where consciousness might fit in. Other contributors address the philosophical presuppositions that may have informed the empirical studies, raising questions about what can be legitimately concluded about the existence of free will from Libet's and Wegner's experimental results. Others examine the effect recent psychological and neuroscientific research could have on legal, social, and moral judgments of responsibility and blame--in situations including a Clockwork Orange-like scenario of behavior correction.
