In the aftermath of scandals such as those at Enron and WorldCom, there is a growing suspicion of the corporate world. For this reason it is more important than ever for firms to maintain a good reputation. In Building Reputational Capital, Kevin T. Jackson offers a practical guide to taking the high road--the only path that leads to lasting success. Based on extensive research and real-world experience, Building Reputational Capital reveals basic principles of integrity and fairness with which firms can build an enduring reputation. More than image, a firm's reputation is a form of capital often neglected in the boardroom and overlooked in conventional analyses of financial statements. Speaking directly to the work experience of real people in practical business settings, Jackson couples each principle with straightforward actions that drive management systems, and he provides tested strategies--from downsizing techniques to e-commerce tips--that cultivate the hidden power of a good reputation. He outlines the advantages of a superior reputation (simply put, people want to work for, invest in, and do business with a company or person with integrity), describes the vital role the firm's leader must play, offers ways to build and protect your reputation on the Internet (from defusing Internet rumors to creating an online community), and shows how to rescue your reputation once disaster hits. Perhaps most important, he shows how to strike the right balance of virtues like authenticity, honesty, responsibility, and stewardship of the environment, employees, and the economy. Highlighted with real-life success stories--from giants like Hewlett-Packard to small firms like Thanksgiving Coffee Company (which invests part of its revenues in the Central American villages in which its beans are grown), Building Reputational Capital offers a simple but effective guide for executives, managers, entrepreneurs, legal professionals, and corporate consultants.

Many American history books begin with the year 1492 and the discovery of the Caribbean Islands by Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus (1451–1506). For the great civilizations of Mesoamerica and South America, though, 1492 proved to be the beginning of the end of their civilization. The products of thousands of years of history—the cities, the architecture, markets, governments, economic systems, legal systems, schools, books, holy shrines—even the daily prayers of the people—were about to be willfully eliminated by the conquering European nations. The rupture would prove so deep that many aspects of pre-Hispanic American culture and tradition were forever deleted from the human memory. Fortunately, some of the important history of the early civilizations has survived and more is being recovered every day.
The three-volume Early Civilizations in the Americas Reference Library provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the two regions of the American continents in which two of the world’s first civilizations developed: Mesoamerica (the name for the lands in which ancient civilizations arose in Central America and Mexico) and the Andes Mountains region of South America (in present-day Peru and parts of Bolivia, northern Argentina, and Ecuador). In both cases, the history of civilization goes back thousands of years. Recent studies show that the first cities in the Americas may have arisen as early as 2600 B.C.E. in the river valleys of present-day Peru. The earliest evidence of civilization in Mesoamerica dates back to about 2000 B.C.E.
The year 1492 has traditionally been used to mark the division in the American past between history and prehistory. The historic times came after the Spanish arrived in 1492 with their writing systems and began to record events. Prehistory is defined as the time before there was writing to record history. We now know that it is incorrect to use the word“prehistory” for some of the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica, which developed writing systems long before the Spanish arrived. But the written records left behind by the early civilizations are scarce and often difficult to decipher. Most historians also rely on evidence from the field of archaeology, the scientific recovery and study of artifacts, or objects made or used by humans of earlier times. By examining artifacts, archaeologists have been able to reconstruct parts of the daily lives of the people of early cultures. Analyzed in laboratories, artifacts can be accurately dated and provide a useful timeline for early civilizations.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, systems of communication are undergoing profound change. Some analysts see this change as revolutionary, comparable with the invention of printing in the west in the fifteenth century, or even of written language itself in the ancient world. Others see it as merely evolutionary, a further application of new technologies to the process of storing, transmitting and communicating information. All agree, however, that there has indeed been great change, symbolised by the development of the global system of communication between computers which we call the Internet. The Internet, however, is only the outward sign; it is the power of the computer itself which really underpins what has happened and what continues to happen, for this is the most powerful tool in history for the handling of information.
For the publishing industry, the development of new media of information storage and transmission represents a particular challenge. Publishers are essentially dealers in knowledge, and hence in the languages and symbols in which knowledge is put into permanent form for present and future use. The printed book – so recently the iconic cultural product of western society – suddenly seems in real danger of displacement not merely as a medium of entertainment and a tool of leisure (where its position has long been under threat), but also in the sphere where it has been almost unchallenged for 500 years as the container and purveyor of learning and ideas.

Over the past 15 years donors seeking to advance development and abate poverty have placed growing emphasis on the need for effective public expenditure management and financial accountability systems. Numerous trends explain this evolution, including the realization that aid resources are fungible, the shift toward policy-based adjustment lending, the need to strengthen the links between policymaking and budget preparation, and the recognition of corruption’s destructive effects. As a result many donors have introduced new diagnostic instruments and reports that describe and assess public expenditure and financial accountability laws, systems, and procedures in countries that receive international aid and technical assistance.
These diagnostic instruments contain information on the fiduciary risks facing aid donors and recipients, and are often required by donors before aid is provided. Such information is also valuable to a recipient country as a foundation on which it can craft sustainable reforms in public expenditure and budgeting, and build institutional capacity.
Drawing on a technical mapping of current assessment instruments’ coverage, a review of staff guidelines and sample assessment reports, and interviews with experts from donor agencies and recipient governments, this study recommends a new approach to assessing and reforming public expenditure management.

Proof technology will become an established field in software engineering. It generally aims at integrating proof processing into industrial design and verifications tools. The origins of this technology lie in the systematic understanding of a fully-fledged, precise notion of proof by mathematics and logics. Using this profound understanding, computer scientists are able to implement proofs, to check and create them automatically and to connect the concepts of proof and programs in a deep way. Via this, connection proofs are used to support the development of reliable software systems. Software engineers have integrated proof processing into industrial development tools, and these implementations are now getting very efficient. The chapters in this book deal with: The benefits and technical challenges of sharing formal mathematics among interactive theorem provers; proof normalization for various axiomatic theories; abstraction-refinement framework of temporal logic model checking; formal verification in industrial hardware design; readable machine-checked proofs and semantics and more.

Welcome to ONT! In 2006, Cisco Press came to me and told me, albeit very quietly, that there was going to be a major revision of the CCNP certification exams. Then they asked whether I would be interested in working on a command guide in the same fashion as my previous books for Cisco Press: the Cisco Networking Academy Program CCNA Command Quick Reference and the CCNA Portable Command Guide. The original idea was to create a single-volume command summary for all four of the new CCNP exams. However, early on in my research I quickly discovered that there was far too much information in the four exams to create a single volume; that would have resulted in a book that was neither portable nor quick as a reference. So when I jokingly suggested that they let me author four books—one for each exam—who would have expected Cisco Press to agree? Well, you have to be careful for what you wish for, as Cisco Press readily agreed. Realizing that this was going to be too much for one part-time author to handle, I quickly got my colleague Hans Roth on board as a co-author.
This book is the fourth and final volume in a four-volume set that attempts to summarize the commands and concepts that you need to know in order to pass one of the CCNP certification exams—in this case, the Optimizing Converged Cisco Networks (ONT) exam. It follows the format of my previous books, which are in fact a cleaned-up version of my own personal engineering journals—a small notebook that can be carried around and that contains little nuggets of information—commands that you forget, the IP addressing scheme of some remote part of the network, and little reminders about how to do something you only have to do once or twice a year, but that is vital to the integrity and maintenance of your network.
With the creation of two brand-new CCNP exams, the amount of new information out there is growing on an almost daily basis. There is always a new white paper to read, a new Webinar to view, another slideshow from a Networkers session that was never attended. The engineering journal can be that central repository of information that won't weigh you down as you carry it from the office or cubicle to the server and infrastructure room in some branch office.
To make this guide a more realistic one for you to use, the folks at Cisco Press have decided to continue with an appendix of blank pages—pages that are for you to put your own personal touches—your own configs, commands that are not in this book but are needed in your world, and so on. That way this book will hopefully look less like the authors' journals, but more like your own.

The main subject of this book is the fuzzy c-means proposed by Dunn and Bezdek and their variations including recent studies. A main reason why we concentrate on fuzzy c-means is that most methodology and application studies in fuzzy clustering use fuzzy c-means, and hence fuzzy c-means should be considered to be a major technique of clustering in general, regardless whether one is interested in fuzzy methods or not. Unlike most studies in fuzzy c-means, what we emphasize in this book is a family of algorithms using entropy or entropy-regularized methods which are less known, but we consider the entropy-based method to be another useful method of fuzzy c-means. Throughout this book one of our intentions is to uncover theoretical and methodological differences between the Dunn and Bezdek traditional method and the entropy-based method. We do note claim that the entropy-based method is better than the traditional method, but we believe that the methods of fuzzy c-means become complete by adding the entropy-based method to the method by Dunn and Bezdek, since we can observe natures of the both methods more deeply by contrasting these two.

"Extremely useful as a guide to anyone working on the interface between emotion in speech and speech synthesis. Tatham and Morton offer a far-sighted perspective to this topic and make explicit many issues the developer of synthesis systems might not think about at all. In this sense the book is also a very good example of how the linguist and phonetician can make valuable contributions to speech technology, and that in the end the best results will be obtained if speech technologists and linguists/phoneticians work together."--Linguist List
All human speech has expression. It is part of the 'humanness' of speech, and is a quality listeners expect to find. Without expression, speech sounds lifeless and artificial. Remove expression, and what's left is the bare bones of the intended message, but none of the feelings which surround the message. The purpose of this book is to present research examining expressive content in speech with a view to simulating expression in computer speech. Human beings communicate expressively with each other in conversation: now in the computer age there is a perceived need for machines to communicate expressively with humans in dialogue.
About the Author
Mark Tatham is Professor in the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. He researches the theory of the production and perception of speech within the general theory of linguistics. He has taught phonology, computational modelling, and speech aspects of neuro-psychology at the University of California and the University of Ohio.
Katherine Morton is a Fellow in the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. She has published research in modelling speech production and perception within the overall framework of human communication, constrained by linguistic theory. She has taught experimental linguistics/phonetics at the University of Cambridge and the University of California.

Since the 1970's, there has been a great deal of research effort spent on studying chaotic systems and the properties of the chaotic signals generated. Characterized by their wideband, impulse-like autocorrelation and low cross-correlation properties, chaotic signals are useful spread-spectrum signals for carrying digital information. Spectrum spreading has become one of the most popular modulation techniques for high-speed wireless communications. It makes use of signals of very wide bandwidth to carry information at relatively low data rates, and possesses advantages such as low probability of interception, resistance to jamming, multiple-access capability and mitigation to multipath effect, which are particularly important in a wireless scenario. In addition to enjoying the aforementioned benefits, chaotic signals can be generated using simple circuitries, thus lowering the cost of transceivers.
Early study of chaos-based communication systems was focused on a single-user case. In the past few years, more effort has been put on investigating systems with multiple-access capability, which is a key feature of spread-spectrum communication systems. This book presents a detailed study of some multiple-access schemes used for chaos-based communications, and evaluates their performance. In addition, the effectiveness of the multiuser detection techniques, whose primary objective is to reduce interference between users and hence improve performance, is evaluated in the context of multiple-access digital communication systems.
* Hot research topic
* Describes communication technologies for the future
* Authors among the pioneers researching in chaos-based communications

R is revolutionizing the world of statistical computing. Powerful, flexible, and best of all free, R is now the program of choice for tens of thousands of statisticians. Destined to become an instant classic, R Graphics presents the first complete, authoritative exposition on the R graphical system. Paul Murrell, widely known as the leading expert on R graphics, has developed an in-depth resource that takes nothing for granted and helps both neophyte and seasoned users master the intricacies of R graphics. After an introductory overview of R graphics facilities, the presentation first focuses on the traditional graphics system, showing how to work the traditional functions, describing functions that are available to produce complete plots, and how to customize the details of plots. The second part of the book describes the grid graphics system - a system unique to R and much more powerful than the traditional system. The author, who was integral in the development of the grid system, shows, starting from a blank page, how it can be used to produce graphical scenes. He also describes how to develop new graphical functions that are easy for others to use and build on. Appendices contain a brief introduction to the R system in general and discuss how the traditional and grid graphics systems can be combined. Much of the information presented in this book cannot be found anywhere else. Well ahead of the curve, particularly regarding the grid system, R Graphics will have a major impact on the future direction of statistical graphics development.

The book you have in your hands is the second volume of the eighth edition of Core Java™, fully updated for Java SE 6. The first volume covers the essential features of the language; this volume covers the advanced topics that a programmer will need to know for professional software development. Thus, as with the first volume and the previous editions of this book, we are still targeting programmers who want to put Java technology to work on real projects.
Please note: If you are an experienced developer who is comfortable with advanced language features such as inner classes and generics, you need not have read the first volume in order to benefit from this volume. While we do refer to sections of the previous volume when appropriate (and, of course, hope you will buy or have bought Volume I), you can find the needed background material in any comprehensive introductory book about the Java platform.
Finally, when any book is being written, errors and inaccuracies are inevitable. We would very much like to hear about them should you find any in this book. Of course, we would prefer to hear about them only once. For this reason, we have put up a web site at http://horstmann.com/corejava with an FAQ, bug fixes, and workarounds. Strategically placed at the end of the bug report web page (to encourage you to read the previous reports) is a form that you can use to report bugs or problems and to send suggestions for improvements to future editions.

High dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is an emerging field that has the potential to cause a great scientific and technological impact in the near future. Although new, this field is large and complex, with non-trivial relations to many different areas, such as image synthesis, computer vision, video and image processing, digital photography, special effects among others. For the above reasons,HDRI has been extensively researched over the past years and, consequently, the related scientific literature is vast. As an indication that the field is reaching maturity, tutorials and books on HDRI appeared. Moreover, this new resource has already reached interested practitioners in various application areas. In this book, we do not aim at covering the whole field of high dynamic range imaging and its applications, since it is a broad subject that is still evolving. Instead, our intent is to cover the basic principles behind HDRI and focus on one of the currently most important problems, both theoretically and practically. That is, the reconstruction of high dynamic range images from regular low dynamic range pictures. "This book speaks with experience. It gives you the building blocks for a plan to tackle a difficult code base and the context for techniques like refactoring. It is a sad fact that there are too few of these kinds of books out there, when reengineering is such a common event. But I'm at least glad to see that while there aren't many books in this vein, this book is an example of how good they are."
From the foreword by Martin Fowler
The documentation is missing or obsolete, and the original developers have departed. Your team has limited understanding of the system, and unit tests are missing for many, if not all, of the components. When you fix a bug in one place, another bug pops up somewhere else in the system. Long rebuild times make any change difficult. All of these are signs of software that is close to the breaking point.
Many systems can be upgraded or simply thrown away if they no longer serve their purpose. Legacy software, however, is crucial for operations and needs to be continually available and upgraded. How can you reduce the complexity of a legacy system sufficiently so that it can continue to be used and adapted at acceptable cost?
Based on the authors' industrial experiences, this book is a guide on how to reverse engineer legacy systems to understand their problems, and then reengineer those systems to meet new demands. Patterns are used to clarify and explain the process of understanding large code bases, hence transforming them to meet new requirements. The key insight is that the right design and organization of your system is not something that can be evident from the initial requirements alone, but rather as a consequence of understanding how these requirements evolve.
Features:
* Describes how to reverse engineer a monolithic system to understand how it really works and how to identify potential problems.
* Includes reengineering patterns that tackle well-known reengineering techniques often encountered in object-oriented programming, such as introducing polymorphism, factoring out common behavior, detecting duplicated code, and understanding design.
* Shows how to build a culture of continuous reengineering for achieving flexible and maintainable object-oriented systems.

This whole book idea started as a bet I had with my editor that we couldn't pick two random techie topics and tie them together in a book. Two darts flew through the air and the topics "Ajax" and "live CDs" ended up being the result. This book could've just as easily been about Blu-ray on Rails or iPod design patterns. So it's just dumb luck that you're picking up a book on Ajax and live CDs.
And if you believe that, maybe I can interest you in helping fund this startup company I've been thinking about launching! The truth is, Ajax and live CDs are surprisingly good bedfellows in that live CDs provide the perfect environment for building and testing Ajax applications. The whole idea of a "live CD" is that it includes a complete operating system on a single CD. Along with a complete operating system, you get to include any applications you want, such as a Web server that can serve up Ajax applications.
One thing that is unique about Ajax applications as compared to purely client-side applications developed solely in JavaScript is that they require something to happen on the server. In other words, the very premise of Ajax is communication between a client and a server. This means you not only need a server, but you need a server that you have a bit of control over. At the very least, you need the ability to quickly install and test server-side scripts that will handle the server-side processing for your Ajax applications. Live CDs fit the bill nicely in terms of giving you an unbelievably customizable platform for building, testing, and hosting Ajax applications.
As cool as live CDs can be, I have to be honest and say that this book is 95% about Ajax. The live CD facet of this book is primarily a convenience due to the fact that Ajax applications are more demanding of their environment than pure client applications.
OK, so the book is primarily about Ajax, but what does that really mean? It means that in a relatively few number of pages you learn how to do the following things with Ajax:
-
Dynamically load e-book chapters for a Web-based book reader (Chapter 3)
-
Instantly select and view live stock quotes (Chapter 4)
-
Turn any Web page into a news aggregator that understands RSS news feeds (Chapter 5)
-
Add auto-complete functionality to your Web site (Chapter 6)
-
Validate form data and look up location data in real time (Chapter 7)
-
Create a "Web 2.0" image viewer to modernize the way your pages handle images (Chapter 8)
-
Use informational popup windows to dynamically display small nuggets of content (Chapter 9)
-
Add a live weather condition popup window to any link (Chapter 10)
-
Calculate shipping charges on the fly with a U.S. Postal Service Ajax request (Chapter 11)
-
Incorporate an animated five-star rating system into your Web pages (Chapter 12)
These are the kinds of dynamic applications that Ajax makes possible. More importantly, this book uses a construction kit approach to guiding you through adding these features to Ajax applications. Although you will ultimately learn a lot about Ajax as you explore the many examples presented throughout this book, the focus of the book is not on teaching you Ajax. The focus is on showing you how to do cool things with Ajax. Sometimes this requires you to learn something entirely new; other times it simply requires cutting and pasting code. The point is that this book is about doing things.
In my opinion, doing is learning, so you'll ultimately leave this book with a much more thorough understanding of Ajax than when you started. But more importantly, you'll leave it with your own set of Ajax building blocks that you can take with you and apply to your own projects.

Johnson opens by discussing virtually all of the technical essentials of working with one's camera to make correct exposures and then proceeds to address questions about working with digital film and formats and transferring files. He further explains how to compose and edit photographs on one's computer, showing how to improve sharpness and contrast, clean up images, use special effects, and blend text with images. The book concludes with helpful chapters on printing one's photographs and sharing images through e-mail, web pages, and disks. Anyone who works with digital photographs will find this book quite thorough and useful. Recommended for all photography collections in public and academic libraries. Raymond Bial, Parkland Coll.
