By the end of the 1960s, when I started to get interested in how the TV set at home really worked, color television and the second national TV channel was introduced in Sweden. The old medium-wave radio, with glowing electron tubes underneath its cover, made it possible to listen to voices from distant countries, but the TV programming choices were quite small at this time. I only had Swedish TV 1 and TV 2 and the one national Danish channel to watch during my childhood. But I was lucky to live on the south coast of Sweden, which gave me some special opportunities.

During the summer, and sometimes during winter high pressure weather conditions, we could receive TV channels from other countries. The proximity to the European continent meant we received two East German channels in black and white and three West German channels in color. In those days, Germany was divided, and these two parts used different color TV systems.

To my parents’ consternation, I put large antenna constructions on the roof of our house. And after a while, I succeeded in bringing even more exotic channels in our house. In addition to more East European TV signals, we could also watch TV from Spain and Italy. A very special event occurred in June, 1978, when I succeeded in receiving an Icelandic test card.

The most challenging task for a DXer in Europe has always been to be able to receive a trans-Atlantic signal. After reading about this in one of the few books that existed at the time about TV DXing, receiving trans-Atlantic broadcasts became my quest. I believe that I did succeed for a short while, somewhere in the lower VHF bands. Using my (in those days) well-trained eyes, I saw what I think was a North American station identification sign. But to be honest, I’m not 100 percent sure that I really saw that sign deep down in the noise a quarter of a century ago. Sometime you just see what you want to see.

"The author, who specialises in digital and interactive media, sets out the arguments with a view to readers being able to make informed decisions on the issues before them." -Book Shelf

Digital rights management (DRM) is a type of server software developed to enable secure distribution - and perhaps more importantly, to disable illegal distribution - of paid content over the Web. DRM technologies are being developed as a means of protection against the online piracy of commercially marketed material, which has proliferated through the widespread use of Napster and other peer-to-peer file exchange programs.

With the flourish of these file exchange programs, content owners, creators and producers need to have a plan to distribute their content digitally and protect it at the same timea seemingly impossible task. There are numerous books dealing with copyright, eBusiness, the Internet, privacy, security, content management, and related technical subjects. Additionally, there are several research papers, and almost daily newspaper and magazine articles dealing with digital piracy. However, there are only a few books and documents that bring these together as a basis for profitable exchange of digital content. Digital Rights Management can help content providers make money by unifying the confusing array of concepts that swirl around current presentations of DRM in newspapers and business publications.

* Learn from an award winning author and Emmy nominee
* Perfect for the non-technical decision maker, content owner or DRM implementation manager
* Details all the options from legal to technical

Computers have changed the way physics is done, but those changes are only slowly making their way into the typical physics curriculum. This textbook is designed to help speed that transition.

Computational physics is now widely accepted as a third, equally valid complement to the traditional experimental and theoretical approaches to physics. It clearly relies upon areas that lie some distance from the traditional physics curriculum, however. In this text, I attempt to provide a reasonably thorough, numerically sound foundation for its development. However, I have not attempted to be rigorous; this is not meant to be a text on numerical analysis. Likewise, this is not a programming manual: I assume that the student is already familiar with the elements of the computer language, and is ready to apply it to the task of scientific computing.

The FORTRAN language is used throughout this text. It is widely available, continually updated, and remains the most commonly used programming language in science. Recent FORTRAN compilers written by Microsoft provide access to many graphics routines, enabling students to generate simple figures from within their FORTRAN programs running on PCcompatible microcomputers. Such graphics capabilities greatly enhance the value of the computer experience.

Trying to trade stock, bond, commodity and currency markets without intermarket awareness is like trying to drive a car without looking out the side and rear windows--very dangerous. In this guide to intermarket analysis, the author uses years of experience in technical analysis plus extensive charts to clearly demonstrate the interrelationshps that exist among the various market sectors and their importance. You'll learn how to use activity in surrounding markets in the same way that most people employ traditional technical indicators for directional clues. Shows the analyst how to focus outward, rather than inward, to provide a more rational understanding of technical forces at work in the marketplace.

The importance of IT Service Management is becoming widely recognized. Whereas in the 1960s and 1970s interest was still focused mainly on the improvement of hardware, and whereas the development of software was the major concern until well into the 1980s, the 1990s was the decade that saw the rise of service management.

For decades, Service Management had been seen as an extension of development, more of a necessary evil than a valuable element in automation. But recent years have been characterized by a turnaround in this view, supported not least by Gartner Group publications, which show that around 70–80 percent of the life-cycle costs of an information system are incurred in the exploitation phase.

This shows that the exploitation area is a rewarding area of activity when it comes to cost control. This is further supported by the discovery that developers spend around 60 per cent of their time on maintenance. In addition, it is evident that there is a strong growth in the awareness that many primary business processes can no longer function without the contributions made by information systems; in many industries, IT is already one of the primary business processes. Think, for instance, of telecommunications, banking, insurance and other data-intensive industries. The developments in e-commerce also show that IT has become a crucial factor for operational management.

And on closer inspection it will be found that the main day-to-day activities of a very large number of IT staff seem to consist of management activities. Therefore the business needs to get control of information technology and the services based on it.

All in all, there is a flood of signals showing that the organization of IT Service Management is a field to which very careful attention should be paid. And this is in a world that is characterized by an avalanche of technological developments and increasing demands on the time-to-market, flexibility and performance of information systems.

In the first year of the iPhone’s existence, Apple sold 6 million of them; brought the thing to 70 countries; and inspired an industry of misbegotten iPhone lookalikes from other companies. By the end of Year One, you could type iPhone into Google and get 229 million hits.

Now there’s a new iPhone, the iPhone 3G. More importantly, there’s a new version of the iPhone’s software, called iPhone 2.0. And then there’s the iPhone App Store, which offers thousands of add-on programs written by individuals, software companies, and everything in between.

This is huge. Remember how mystified everyone was when Apple called its music player the iPod—instead of, say, iMusic or iSongs or something? The reason was that Apple had much bigger plans for the iPod—photos, videos, documents, and so on. Maybe they should have saved that name for the iPhone.

Yes, the iPhone is still an iPod. And it’s still the best Internet phone you’ve ever seen. It shows fully formatted email (with attachments, thank you) and displays entire Web pages with fonts and design intact. It’s still tricked out with a tilt sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and that amazing multitouch screen.

Therefore, it’s still a calendar, address book, calculator, alarm clock, stopwatch, stock tracker, traffic reporter, RSS reader, and weather forecaster. It even stands in for a flashlight and, with the screen off, a pocket mirror.

But now, thanks to the App Store, the iPhone is a fast, wicked fun pocket computer. All those free or cheap programs can turn it into a medical reference, musical keyboard, time tracker, remote control, voice recorder, tip calculator, e-book reader, and so on. And whoa, those games! Hundreds of them, with smooth 3-D graphics and tilt control.

All of this sends the iPhone’s utility and power through the roof. Calling it a phone is practically an insult.

"Clear, correct, and deep, this is a welcome addition to discussions of law and computing for anyone -- even lawyers!" -- Lawrence Lessig, Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and founder of the Stanford Center for Internet and Society

If you work in information technology, intellectual property is central to your job -- but dealing with the complexities of the legal system can be mind-boggling. This book is for anyone who wants to understand how the legal system deals with intellectual property rights for code and other content. You'll get a clear look at intellectual property issues from a developer's point of view, including practical advice about situations you're likely to encounter.

Written by an intellectual property attorney who is also a programmer, Intellectual Property and Open Source helps you understand patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and licenses, with special focus on the issues surrounding open source development and the GPL. This book answers questions such as:

How do open source and intellectual property work together? What are the most important intellectual property-related issues when starting a business or open source project? How should you handle copyright, licensing and other issues when accepting a patch from another developer? How can you pursue your own ideas while working for someone else? What parts of a patent should be reviewed to see if it applies to your work? When is your idea a trade secret? How can you reverse engineer a product without getting into trouble? What should you think about when choosing an open source license for your project?

Most legal sources are too scattered, too arcane, and too hard to read.Intellectual Property and Open Source is a friendly, easy-to-follow overview of the law that programmers, system administrators, graphic designers, and many others will find essential.

About the Author

Van Lindberg is a software engineer and practicing attorney. What he does most, though, is translate - from "lawyer" to "engineer" and back. He likes working with both computer code and legal code to get things done. Van's current work touches both traditional intellectual property and the emerging field of open source law, where he advises businesses and open source groups on intellectual property issues.

This volume presents the most exciting results of the Mobile and Wireless Communication Summit, held 2007 in Budapest. It contains worked out contributions from all areas of wireless communications, physical layer, access methods, techniques and technologies, networks, applications and systems.

Lectori Salutem!

This is another book – among the myriads – dealing with wireless communications. The reader might be aware: this topic is really among bestsellers in technology – bestsellers in technology itself and that in technical literature. Communications is one of the leading techniques in information society and mobile/wireless communications is one among the (maybe not more than two with optics the second) leading techniques in communications.

Development of wireless communications was and is really spectacular in the last decade of the 20th and first decade of the 21st century. Such topics as MIMO, wireless networking, security in the technological field, new business models in the service providing field, various applications in the users’ side, to mention a few only, were undergoing an unprecedented evolution. So it is not surprising that the number of conferences and the number of books in this field grows and grows, in a nearly unbounded way.

I strongly hope that in spite of this abundance our book yields some valid contribution to this mass. It is a sample (I feel and hope: a rather significant sample) of what was achieved in the last year/last few years in this field in the world. It is also a sample of what topics are felt as important in Information Society Technology by the European Union. And also a sample of what was felt as important by this conference, the 16th IST Mobile and Wireless communication Summit. Our effort was to put together a valid show of communications’ art by these samples.
