When you see a nicely presented set of data, the natural response is: “How did they do that; what tricks did they use; and how can I do that for myself?” Alas, usually, you must simply keep wondering, since such tricks-of- the-trade are usually held close to the vest and rarely divulged. Shamefully ignored in the technical literature, measurement and modeling of high-speed semiconductor devices is a fine art. Robust measuring and modeling at the levels of performance found in modern SiGe devices requires extreme dexterity in the laboratory to obtain reliable data, and then a valid model to fit that data.

Drawn from the comprehensive and well-reviewed Silicon Heterostructure Handbook, this volume focuses on measurement and modeling of high-speed silicon heterostructure devices. The chapter authors provide experience-based tricks-of-the-trade and the subtle nuances of measuring and modeling advanced devices, making this an important reference for the semiconductor industry. It includes easy-to-reference appendices covering topics such as the properties of silicon and germanium, the generalized Moll-Ross relations, the integral charge-control model, and sample SiGe HBT compact model parameters.

This book evolved from the need to migrate computational science into undergraduate education. It is intended for students who have had basic physics, programming, matrices and multivariable calculus.

The choice of topics in the book has been influenced by the Undergraduate Computational Engineering and Science Project (a United States Department of Energy funded e􀀞ort), which was a series of meetings during the 1990s. These meetings focused on the nature and content for computational science undergraduate education. They were attended by a diverse group of science and engineering teachers and professionals, and the continuation of some of University in fall semesters since 1992. The other four chapters were developed in 2002 and taught in the 2002-03 academic year.

The department of mathematics at North Carolina State University has given me the time to focus on the challenge of introducing computational science materials into the undergraduate curriculum. The North Carolina Supercomtutorials and computer time on supercomputers. Many students have made important suggestions, and Carol Cox Benzi contributed some course materials with the initial use of MATLAB R°. MATLAB is a registered trademark of The MathWorks, Inc.

Like ourselves, the individual cells that form our bodies can grow, reproduce, process information, respond to stimuli, and carry out an amazing array of chemical reactions. These abilities define life. We and other multicellular organisms contain billions or trillions of cells organized into complex structures, but many organisms consist of a single cell. Even simple unicellular organisms exhibit all the hallmark properties of life, indicating that the cell is the fundamental unit of life. As the twenty-first century opens, we face an explosion of new data about the components of cells, what structures they contain, how they touch and influence each other. Still, an immense amount remains to be learned, particularly about how information flows through cells and how they decide on the most appropriate ways to respond.

Molecular cell biology is a rich, integrative science that brings together biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, microscopy, genetics, physiology, computer science, and developmental biology. Each of these fields has its own emphasis and style of experimentation. In the following chapters, we will describe insights and experimental approaches drawn from all of these fields, gradually weaving the multifaceted story of the birth, life, and death of cells. We start in this prologue chapter by introducing the diversity of cells, their basic constituents and critical functions, and what we can learn from the various ways of studying cells.

As part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation requested that the National Research Council assess the opportunities, over roughly the next decade, in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and technology. In particular, the National Research Council was asked to cover the state of AMO science, emphasizing recent accomplishments and identifying new and compelling scientific questions. Controlling the Quantum World, discusses both the roles and challenges for AMO science in instrumentation; scientific research near absolute zero; development of extremely intense x-ray and laser sources; exploration and control of molecular processes; photonics at the nanoscale level; and development of quantum information technology. This book also offers an assessment of and recommendations about critical issues concerning maintaining U.S. leadership in AMO science and technology.

The Software Engineering Handbook is written for software developers; unlike many other texts, it is written to be used in developers everyday work. Care has been taken to reference outside sources consulted for the text, easily leading readers to more detailed information when needed. This book is recommended for libraries that serve IT professionals or training programs.
Elaine Fetyko Page, E-Streams

Unfortunately, much of what has been written about software engineering comes from an academic perspective which does not always address the everyday concerns that software developers and managers face. With decreasing software budgets and increasing demands from users and senior management, technology directors need a complete guide to the subject of software engineering. The successor to the bestselling Software Engineering Productivity Handbook, this book fulfills that need. Written by an expert with over 25 years of practical experience in building systems, The Software Engineering Handbook covers the full spectrum of software engineering methodologies, techniques, and tools and provides details on how to reach the goals of quality management in a software-engineering environment. It includes a wide variety of information, from the guidelines for the Malcom Baldridge Quality Award to the IEEE measures for reliable software. 65 field-tested how-to chapters provide techniques, guidelines, and philosophies that will assist developers in implementing quality and productivity programs. The author provides readers with a wealth of information and advice in a multitude of areas including management of resources, methods, quality, and metrics. The book concludes with 19 appendices filled with guides, templates, forms, and examples that illustrate important software engineering techniques such as: software requirement specification, software design specification, and a complete test plan including use of automated estimation tools.

Driven by the need and desire to reduce costs, organizations are faced with a set of decisions that require analytical scrutiny. Enterprise Architecture A to Z: Frameworks, Business Process Modeling, SOA, and Infrastructure Technology examines cost-saving trends in architecture planning, administration, and management.

To establish a framework for discussion, this book begins by evaluating the role of Enterprise Architecture Planning and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) modeling. It provides an extensive review of the most widely deployed architecture framework models. In particular, the book discusses The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) and the Zachman Architectural Framework (ZAF) in detail, as well as formal architecture standards and all four layers of these models: the business architecture, the information architecture, the solution architecture, and the technology architecture.

The first part of the text focuses on the upper layers of the architecture framework, while the second part focuses on the technology architecture. In this second section, the author presents an assessment of storage technologies and networking and addresses regulatory and security issues. Additional coverage includes high-speed communication mechanisms such as Ethernet, WAN and Internet communication technologies, broadband communications, and chargeback models.

Daniel Minoli has written a number of columns and books on the high-tech industry and has many years of technical hands-on and managerial experience at top financial companies and telecom/networking providers. He brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to these pages. By reviewing the strategies in this book, CIOs, CTOs, and senior managers are empowered by a set of progressive approaches to designing state-of-the-art IT data centers.

Driven by the demand for high-data-rate, millimeter wave technologies with broad bandwidth are being explored in high-speed wireless communications. These technologies include gigabit wireless personal area networks (WPAN), high-speed wireless local area networks (WLAN), and high-speed wireless metropolitan area networks (WMAN). As a result of this technological push, standard organizations are actively calling for specifications of millimeter wave applications in the above wireless systems.

Providing the guidance needed to help you navigate through these new technologies, Millimeter Wave Technology in Wireless PAN, LAN, and MAN covers the fundamental concepts, recent advances, and potential that these millimeter wave technologies will offer with respect to circuits design, system architecture, protocol development, and standardization activities.

The book presents essential challenges and solutions related to topics that include millimeter wave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC), packaging technology of millimeter wave system and circuits, and millimeter wave channel models. With numerous figures, tables and references, this text allows speedy access to the fundamental problems, key challenges, open issues, future directions, and further readings on millimeter wave technologies in relation to WPAN, WLAN, and WMAN.
